Author notice: This is a very dark NJO AU songfic. The song that inspired me to write this (short) songfic is called Somewhere there’s hope by Steve Perry

Somewhere there’s hope
The two moons shone brightly above. Light cascaded down and illuminated the darkness below his feet. Yet the light didn’t light up all of the darkness. It was simply too far down. There would always be darkness. Part of the galaxy would always be covered in darkness. A mocking sneer left his mouth which quickly vanished in the dark night.
The night was not cold, but it was also not warm. He couldn’t define this night. He wondered if he just didn’t notice or just didn’t care. He decided it was the latter. Who cared? Yet somehow cold would suit his mood. Or would it?
When you're running' baby
You can't let go
Life's on the line
When you're runnin', runnin', runnin'
From a cold, cold world
Voices they cry
Kyp Durron, Jedi Master, took an extra step towards the end of the ridge. Below there was light, below the light there was darkness. Just like the galaxy. Light and darkness, good and evil. Though he suspected the Yuuzhan Vong didn’t see it that way.
The invading race of warriors had been rampaging trough the known part galaxy for years now and destructed everything in their path that didn’t suit them. That included many different races and planets. Even the galaxy’s capital city had been transformed for the purposes of the invaders. He had seen it with his own eyes.
Everything he had once known to be Coruscant was gone now. He had never lived their, not long, only occasional visits. But it had been a symbol. A symbol of hope. Even to him, but it was gone now. And with it his hope. His confidence that life would one day go back to what it once was. Peaceful in its own way.
Somewhere there's hope

Somewhere there's hope, waitin' there, waitin' there
Kyp laughed out loud as he realized how naïve his line of thought was. But truth to tell as naïve as in was he had lost hope. Everything was scattered and somewhere along the line he had he’d lost hope. Now he was looking down into the depths of the ravine. “Welcome to my world of insanity, where nothing makes sense and chaos reigns.”
He took another small step towards the edge. He could not step any closer without stepping of the edge. Should he? He wondered. He could end it all. One step and it would end. There would be peace and quiet. If he took another step the pain would end. The emptiness inside him that always burned like cold heat deep inside would stop. Above all the voices of the dead would stop tormenting him. Their faces would stop haunting him at all times of the day and with everything he did. The faces of the dead whom he had caused and the faces of whom he had failed to save. He could end the pain with just one more step.
He stared ahead, many different thought occupying his mind. But among the chaos that reigned one sentence returned constantly. One more step and it would all end.
Ooh the wheels of fear
Turn truth into lies
Like a thief in the night
Instead of surrendering to his desire he sat down. His legs free of the ground. “This is not a dream,” he muttered to himself. “Death and I stand miles apart.” Slowly but steadily his mind returned to normal and the storm inside died down, allowing him to have a normal thought pattern. Too easy, it was simply too easy to step out. Above all it was not him. Why then? Only to kill the pain? The pain had always been there. As Jacen had once told him, “To live is to a slave of pain.” Then he would play the part of slave well. He always had.
Hold on, through the smoke
And through the fire
No-one, can hide
Cause somewhere there's hope
He turned his gaze to the two moons above and smiled. For a moment he was lost in thoughts of happier times. Not all was bad. There was not only pain. There was order there as well. And some sort of order meant peace. He would find his island of peace. He stood and started the long walk back to wherever he had left his X-Wing. Along the way he turned and faced the two moons above again. Out loud he said, “If there’s no hope then I’ll be the hope!” He grinned as he knew he had found his peace.

Oh wow...
I could totally feel Kyp's despair and pain. It can't be easy to live with billions of deaths on your hands, but Kyp is still a person with feelings...and you captured them perfectly! Incredible story!

Oh my gosh......That was amazing elfsheen! Kyp is a person of deep feelings, and he's well......a bit moody.  But honestly, you captured it very well, good job.

Ohh, great work, Elfsheen!! I really like this. You convey Kyp's pain very well - but it's so sweet at the end when he realizes there's hope. Good for Kyp.

i don't normally read kyp fanfics, but after reading your poems, i had to read at least one prose. i have to agree. it isn't a very dark kyp fanfic, but it's still really good.

Kyp Durron, walking the line of death, wanting to end it right then and there, and all he needs to do it take one more step... been there, done that.
That was great, Elfsheen. I know exactly what is like to do what you just had Kyp do, so I can really get into this fic. It was a great piece of work.
