Yet another viggie from me. Heard my mom playing this song, decided it'd make a pretty good Kyp viggie.
Title: Rebel
Author(s): DantanaSkywalker
Timeframe: NJO
Characters: Kyp Durron, Jaina Solo
Genre: NJO, K/J
Keywords: Kyp Durron, Jaina Solo, K/J, songfic
Summary: Kyp thinks about how Jaina views him, and how he can change it.
Notes: Only technically a K/J, 'cause it's me. No actual K/J in it. Yes, the song is "Soldier Of Love" by Donny Osmond. Don't kill me. It makes sense. Just read it, okay? Thanks. Oh, and I cut the "shalalalala" part. Decided it was WAAAAAAAAY too dumb for a Kyp Durron story.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He'd always been a rebel. Normally, it didn't bother him. He honestly didn't care when most people pointed fingers and called him names behind their hands. Or to his face.
It was simply the truth, and who was he to run from the truth?
Kyp smiled ruefully. Who was he to run from the truth? Right. He'd been running from it for months now.
The truth was, he was in love with Jaina Solo, and she cared that he was a rebel.
And for the first time since he'd come back from the Dark Side, he found himself caring about someone's opinion of him.
So you heard that I'm a rebel
With a heart made of stone
I've got a restless spirit
That nobody can own
He knew what she saw when she looked at him. A reckless, willful, dangerous man who had made one trip down the path to the Dark Side. A man capable of doing horrible things. Who on more than one occasion, had done those horrible things.
And not all of them had been while under the control of Exar Kun.
If a picture tells a story
Won't you listen to mine
I'm searching for the answer
But it's so hard to find
The problem was, there were few outward signs of his struggle with himself, with the Dark Side. A few silver hairs in his black curls, a few lines around his eyes. His face was still youthful, surprising given he was thirty-five, and a veteran of war.
Not that thirty-five was old. Han Solo had been three years older than Kyp when he'd married Leia Organa. He'd been thirty-nine when Jaina was born.
Of course, the age difference was greater between himself and Jaina than between Han and Leia. Four more years. Normally, he wouldn't think four years would make such a difference.
It certainly did with Jaina, but mostly because . . . Han would think the difference too great, even if Jaina did see Kyp the way he wanted her to.
You'll see much deeper
When you read between the lines
'Cause there's a fire burning in my eyes
He wished that Jaina saw deeper than the surface. He had offered her several opportunities to go deeper, but at the last minute, he always felt her fear, her uncertainty.
Kyp wished that he was more aggressive in his pursuit of Jaina. But no, those almost-forgotten lessons in chivalry that his mother had drilled into his admittedly-resistant young brain had popped up and he'd backed off, letting Jaina go with the man she seemed to prefer.
Like a thief in the night
Who can't get enough
I am willing to fight
'Cause I'm a soldier of love
Maybe he should be more aggressive. It wouldn't be out of character for him.
But it would be likely to discourage Jaina.
Kyp shook his head. His gaze landed on Jaina, sitting with Jag across the crowded restaurant. He jerked with surprise, not realising she'd been there.
He sagged when he realised they'd just sat down, the two lovebirds.
A thought entered his mind. He could walk over there, wreck their evening. Fel would love that.
Like a shot in the dark
When the going gets rough
It's state of the heart
When you're a soldier of love
No, if he did that, Jaina would get more angry, and then what? Probably stop talking to him, or something.
Awfully difficult to fight for your convictions when you were in Kyp's situation. The approach he needed was so opposite his nature . . .
Love can be so heartless
When you turn out the lights
A mutual surrender
An the heat of the night
Kyp's brow furrowed, and his green eyes turned thoughtful.
Why was it that he couldn't be aggressive with Jaina? She'd responded when he'd pressed his suit, before Fel had sauntered back into the picture. Kyp knew she'd felt something.
It was when he'd decided to be more cautious when she's apparently lost what interest she'd shown.
How could he have been so stupid?!
Life's an empty picture
When you're living alone
Maybe that's the reason
Every heart needs a home
He'd lived alone for far too long. He didn't know how to really interact with women. Following the veiled advice of his pilots had gotten him nowhere.
He needed to follow his instincts.
Yes. Go with his instincts. The instincts that had kept him alive far longer than the poor fisherman's son from Deyer had ever warranted.
This was a tight spot if he'd ever been in one, and he did his best thinking in tight spots.
Each time I fall down
I get on my feet again
I'm gonna win this battle
In the end
Watching Jaina dine with Jag, both of them completely oblivious to him, he watched and planned.
Like a thief in the night
Who can't get enough
I am willing to fight
'Cause I'm a soldier of love
The best option would be to be blunt about it. He'd be opening himself up to the ultimate rejection, but it was worth a shot.
Jaina prefered honesty, and if he were open and honest with her, that might gain him points. There were certainly a lot of things Cardboard there was hiding from her. Kyp was across the room and he could sense it.
Like a shot in the dark
When the going gets rough
It's state of the heart
When you're a soldier of love
Blunt, honest, aggressive.
Yes. These were the things that made Kyp Durron.
Well, okay, maybe not so much the honest part, but a man could change, right?
He spun his bottle of lomin ale, rolling it between his fingers.
You'll see much deeper
When you read between the lines
'Cause there's a fire burning in my eyes
Just then, Jaina glanced across the room and her brown eyes met his. She looked startled, but not dismayed. Kyp wondered what that meant.
Like a thief in the night
Who can't get enough
I am willing to fight
'Cause I'm a soldier of love
She said something to Jag, then got up and stalked across the restaurant to his table.
Furiously, she demanded, "What are you doing here?"
"Having dinner, Your Worship. Is that a crime? I'm sorry, I've offended the Goddess by eating in public. I have shamed you, Great One, by showing my face outside. What must I do in penance?"
He saw her lips twitch, then curl into a smile. It made his lonely heart skip a beat.
"Sorry, didn't mean for that to come off so harsh. I've had a bad day." Her eyes skimmed over him. "From the looks of it, seems you did, too."
"Lost two pilots. Not my most thrilling week in history."
"Out of morbid curiousity, what was your most thrilling week in history?"
Kyp thought for a moment.
Like a shot in the dark
When the going gets rough
It's state of the heart
When you're a soldier of love
"Hapes. Last year. Brunette in a red dress. Took me for a real wild ride."
Jaina looked shocked for a moment before she realised he'd been referring to her. "I thought we'd forgiven each other, Kyp."
"Sure. Didn't say I was gonna forget it, though. That dress made quite the impression."
His green eyes slid over her, taking in the rare dress, this one slinky and cream-coloured, one shoulder bared, a slit up to mid-thigh. "Come to think of it, so does this one."
Two spots of colour blossomed in her cheeks. "Kyp. You never give up, do you?"
A raven brown arched. "Do you want me to, Goddess? You'll probably never hear the likes of that from the stuffed shirt you're dating."
"I thought you liked Jag."
"Yeah, so? Doesn't mean I can't be jealous. Makes it easier to be jealous, actually." Kyp put his bottle down. "Go back to your Colonel, Jay."
Yes, go back to your Colonel. Spend what little time there is left with him.
"What are you up to?" she demanded suddenly.
"If I told you nothing, would you believe me?"
"Hardly."
Like a thief in the night
Who can't get enough
I am willing to fight
'Cause I'm a soldier of love
Kyp shrugged and stood. "Whatever. Have fun playing with your little toy."
He walked out, leaving a surprised Jaina behind.
Whistling, he started down the enclosed promenade.
Like a shot in the dark
When the going gets rough
It's state of the heart
When you're a soldier of love
Yes, tomorrow.
Tomorrow she would see a different Kyp Durron.
Well, okay, not so different Kyp Durron. So that wouldn't change.
But something would.
After all, what is a rebel to do except effect change?
---------
end
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, okay, that was a little weird. Forgive me, it's 3 AM. But I really like Kyp in this one.

Just realised this could be a prequel for, well, just about everything, especially the "Escape/"Fall"/"Whatever this title is gonna be" trilogy. Hmm. Should I call it the "Verb" trilogy? Just kidding!
Random thoughts, sorry.

Hmm. Two options Dana:
1. "Escape"/"Fall"/"Catch"
or
2. "Escape"/"Fall"/"Splatter"
I like this viggie, Dana. You really capture what is going through his mind well. And I wonder what it is that our favourite Jedi Master has in mind.

I'm glad you liked this. I was just going to have Kyp sitting there and thinking, and then Jaina came over and my nice, introspective viggie went all to heck. I had a lot of fun writing this one.
Not having a good day. *sigh* First I try to register for classes for fall semester and find I have an academic hold so I CAN'T register until I get that taken care of. And then when I checked my e-mail, someone told me that I've totally ruined their thoughts of Legolas and that my story sucks (it's a Lord Of The Rings story with Legolas, Haldir, and Gimli in Manhattan, it's not supposed to be serious!).
"Escape"/"Fall"/"Splatter"
That was hilarious! I can't tell you how hard I laughed at that . . .
I'm not going to call it the "Verb" trilogy. That was just a joke. And I finally named number 3. It's called "Surrender" even though the word is contained nowhere within the song I'm planning to use.

Oh, this was wonderful, Dana!!!
For a second I was going to say that you needed to write a sequel to this, and then I read your comment that it could be a prequel to your Escape/Fall/Splatter trilogy.
I thought, cool. Then I thought, nah. Make this a separate series, and write sequels to THIS one!!! Eh? Yeah? Sound good? It sure does to me!

Well, okay, not so different Kyp Durron. So that wouldn't change.
I like Kyp introspection . .. he always has kind of a funny way of thinking.
I really liked the interaction between Kyp and Jaina.

Well, okay, maybe not so much the honest part, but a man could change, right? Keep telling yourself that, Kyp... just keep telling yourself that

I LOVE the whole end part of this, the interaction between Jaina and Kyp. I grin just thinking about it. Especially the whole "Out of morbid curiosity, what was your most thrilling week in history?" Not because she asked, but because she tacked on "Out of morbid curiosity".
I have been asked to write a sequel to this. I think I'm going to. Just not sure if it'll be before or after the "Surrender" viggie. Probably before. I've already got the song picked out. "The Promise" by When In Rome.
