This is a little fic centering around Han's reaction to Anakin's death. It takes place shortly after Anakin's funeral. I warn you, this was written while I was severely sleep deprived so I apologize for any inaccuracies. happy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Son:
Han Solo looked down at the table top at the holo of his son. He drank down a few more sips of whiskey before finally setting the glass back down. Reaching over, he picked up the holo, his eyes playing over the image. It had been taken shortly before the war began. Anakin was sitting on the steps of the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4, grinning from ear to ear as he held out his newly constructed lightsaber proudly.
Han was sitting in the darkest corner of a bar he had run across while gathering some supplies for the Falcon. Despite the fact that he had somehow managed to keep going after his son’s death; he couldn’t resist the urge to get a stiff drink.
Tossing his head back he chugged the last bit of his beverage and dropped the glass to the table one more time.
“Hard to believe that Solo kid got it.”
Han’s head shot up at the words. He glanced around the cantina, quickly spotting five Sabacca players sitting at one of the well lit booths in the front of the bar.
“I heard he went out fighting,” one of the younger men replied, shuffling his cards around in his hand.
“Don’t think that kid new any other way to do it,” an older player responded as he tossed in his bet.
“I wish I had gotten the chance to meet him,” said someone else. “Got to admire him for all he’s done.”
“When they had the report on the news they said he was only seventeen, that right?” the first man asked.
“Yep. Amazing someone that young could have done all he did. You know he spent weeks on Yavin after the Vong invaded, saving some friends of his I think. Fought his way across the whole planet of warriors. Got a friend of mine, used to be part of that Peace Brigade thing, he said Solo was like nothing he’d ever seen. Watching him fight was what made my friend join up with the NR.”
The older man shook his head, “I think my wife cried for hours after she heard about that kid’s death. A lot of people did. I’m not a really fan of the Jedi, personally I think they’re cowards, hidden’ away like that when the galaxy’s been ripped apart and all. But that Anakin Solo, different breed all together. He actually fought for something'.”
Everyone at the table nodded as they threw in their bets. By now Han was hanging on their every word. It was strange to hear someone talking about his son like this. He knew Anakin had a wide spread reputation, but he had never heard anyone talking about him quite like this.
“There are some people who think he’s still alive,” the younger man said after a long pause.
“Not surprised,” another replied. “Rumors gotta’ be spread. 'Keeps the hope alive. When Coruscant fell a lot of people lost their hope. Seeing a city that survived the Emperor himself crumbling like that is enough to shake the determination of everybody.”
“It’d be funny if that kid did manage to make it off that planet alive. Love to be there if he did come back. That’d be signing the Warmaster’s death warrant. Worlds from all over would start join the NR, over throw the whole kriffin’ Vong fleet. Nothing would bring them together like seeing that kid rise up again.”
Han felt the tears begin to well in his eyes as he continued to listen to the conversation, his gaze glue on the holo image in his hand. He looked at the sandy haired boy in the picture, his ice blue eyes shining with innocence and wonder, no idea as to what his future held.
You’ll never know how much you meant to this galaxy, Anakin, Han thought to himself, rubbing a hand across his face as he tried to fight back tremors. You’ll never know how much hope you gave these people. You’ll never know the impact you’ve made.
He had know about his son’s missions and achievements, but he hadn’t understood just how much of a hero Anakin was until that moment. His son had saved countless lives, fought against overwhelming odds, sacrificed himself to protect the ones he loved and those that he had never met.
Han had a drawer full of medals and badges. He had letters of thanks from princes and kings. He held the rank of general in the New Republic military. But none of that compared with what his son had managed to achieve in his short life.
Anakin had become a symbol of hope for an entire galaxy.
Shoving the holo into his pocket, Han stood up, stepping out of the shadows as he wiped away the tears streaming down his face. He walked over to the Sabacca table. The five men looked up, shock written on their faces. They had never noticed him sitting in the corner.
“I want to thank you,” Han said, a weak smile on his face. “Loosing my son is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to face. I wasn't sure how I was going to make it without him. But I learned something tonight. You showed me just how honored I am to call him my son.”
With that Han turned around, heading for the exit. Back to his ship, back to his family, and back to that never ending war. But now he had a feeling that the next time he was thrown into battle he’d have something more to fight for. The memory of his son.
Wow, that was beautiful. It's nice to see a more serious side of Han - I can imagine the mixture of happiness and pain he must have felt, hearing them talk about his son like that. Good job!
All I can say is... wow. I could really feel Han's pain and sorrow. It takes a really special story to bring tears to my eyes but that right there did it. Very very powerful stuff. happy
Damn sad.
I truly, truly hate Del Ray for killing Anakin, and Gaunts Ghosts now have a new mission.
Eliminate those responsible for killing Anakin.
crystalrain: Thank you! I’d been thinking of doing a fic about Han for a while. I don’t think we got much closure about his reaction to lossing Anakin.
Kobe: blush Thanks!
I appreciate the great feedback, everyone! I’m glad you all enjoyed it. happy
Star-Lead: I guess this means you’re headed back over to the FADA to gatherer the masses. grin
Lovely vignette, Lonewolf! I hardly ever read NJO stuff, but I'm a sucker for Han viggies! I'm very glad that I read this, because it was beautifully written and captured Han's pain wonderfully. I liked how you ended it, especially, with Han approaching the card players. Awesome work!
Gather the masses?
Try introduce the Del Ray execs to the Flesh Tearers Space Marine Chapter.
One warning though: STAY THE HELL OUT OF THEIR WAY.
Wonderfully touching! The books spent a lot more time exploring Han's reaction to Chewie's death than Anakin's.
One note: Anakin had dark brown hair, not sandy.
It was on her fifteenth day in the darkness of the Nirauan cave when Mara Jade awoke to discover a rescuer had finally arrived.
It was not, however, any of the potential rescuers she would have expected.
It was Luke.
That was very moving. I always felt that the Han/Anakin relationship was an opportunity that DelRey wasted. But you did marvelously with it. I tried to fight the tears but I couldn't stop that errant one from slipping free. Profound story you've constructed here Lonewolf. A job well done.
Thank you very much everyone! blush
Jedi-2B: As I recall from the Junior Jedi Knights books, Anakin had sandy brown hair like Luke. Maybe it darkened as he grew older though.
As far as I know Anakin never had sandy hair, he was always very dark haired... I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, but all of the NJO books and Junior Jedi Knight books agree with me...
Anyway! Awesome post. I loved seeing Han deal with it and the way they all talked about Anakin. it seems in the NJO books now they forget how much my Solo boy actually did. They only talk about him in reference to his death.
Nicely done! Loved it!
This one brought tears to my eyes. The EU books have never really deep into how Han really feels about his kids, so it was very nice to read this. Your Han is wonderfully human! Beautiful work!!
Believe it or not, but I like the NJO books.
