----------------------------------------------

At any other time and place, Jaina would have yawned, but her mind was too numb to admit the exhaustion that was stealing over her. She had spent too many hours in the tiny cockpit to feel anything but boredom and despair. She guessed that it had been about thirty-nine hours since Coruscant’s fall, but the way time blurred when all you had to do was stare at starlines for hours, it was impossible to be sure.
Jacen is gone. Again. She laughed bitterly to herself. It seemed that the universe was bent on separating them. Might just be easier to give up now and save those she loved from more hurt.
“Careful, Jaina, don’t leave me now.”
Jaina’s head jerked up at the sound of his voice. Jag. What did he say?
“ It’s Ok, Jag, I’m fine.” She mumbled. “ I’m just…” her voice trailed off.
“Stay with me, Jaina.” Jag commanded.
“Right.” Her brain felt sluggish, like it was too difficult to think. “ I just want to go to sleep, Jag.”
“Jaina, how many transformers are in your comm unit?”
Jaina frowned, trying to remember. “Ummm, nineteen, I think.”
“Ok, and how Alderaanian dinkos can you fit in your cockpit?”
Jaina made a bewildered face. “ I don’t know.”
“None. Dinkos aren’t from Alderaan!”
Jaina scowled. “You’re as bad as my brother.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment, even though I know you didn’t mean it that way. By the way, how old are you?”
“Jag, please.” She groaned.
“Thirty-two? Twenty-eight?”
“You’re going to regret this one day.” Jaina growled.
“Not as much as I will if I let you go into shock.” He countered.
“Now, what’s your middle name?”
“ I don’t have one. Neither does Jacen.”
“Ok,” he continued in a sing-song voice, “ who do you love?”
Jaina found herself trying not to laugh. “ I used to think I loved you, but now I’m not so sure.”
“You’ll think differently later. Now—”
“NO! No more! I’m awake!” she cried.
Laughter echoed in the tight space around her. She blushed, knowing the rest of the squadron had heard the entire exchange. “ Boy, Jag Fel, you had better run when we get on solid ground, and run fast,” she muttered, “because if I get my hands on you in the next few days, you’re as good as dead.”
“Oh, good, you are awake.” Jag sounded amused. “ I was beginning to wonder.”
Jaina sighed and shook her head. He was definitely something to look forward to in life.
You know, Jag, if we were in a better place, she felt an ironic smile tug at her mouth, I’d ask you to marry me right now.
“Somehow, I don’t think you meant to say that out loud.” Jag surmised.
Jaina jerked upright. “What?!”
“Don’t worry, we’re on a private channel.” He assured her.
Jaina groaned.
“Would you really?” Jag asked hesitantly.
Jaina blushed again, knowing what he was asking. “Yes.” She answered quietly.
A sudden sound brought her head around. A little red light blinked on the console, pulsing in time to the rhythmic beep that had startled her.
“What is it?” Jag asked, the sound carrying over the comm system.
Jaina frowned. “My transponder. I set it to alert me when it picked up preset transponding frequencies, but we’re nowhere near any designated flight patterns.” She looked at the reading that flashed on the display. “ It’s the Wild Karrde.” She grinned.
“Well, what do you know.” She keyed her comm mike. “ Wild Karrde, this is the Twin Suns squadron. Requesting assistance and docking privileges.”
“Good grief, Jaina, I’m always saving you Solo’s butts. Tell your father this cancels the favor I owed him.” Karrde’s voice crackled over the comm system.
Jaina grinned. “Will do, but according to him, you owe him several favors.”
Karrde made a sound that was somewhere in between choking and laughing. “I see. Well, we may have to settle that disagreement later. Permission to board granted. See you soon.” The comm clicked.
“He sounds like an interesting character.” Jag said a moment later.
Jaina only laughed.
After they had boarded and shut down their x-wings, a tall man and a slender woman with silver-shot black hair strode into the room. The man hugged Jaina and the woman smiled warmly.
After a moment, Jaina turned. “Jag, this is Talon Karrde, a friend of the family.”
Jag nodded respectfully and shook the hand that was offered. “A pleasure to meet you, sir.”
Karrde grinned. “Actually, I’m practically a member of the family. Her aunt used to work for me, I’ve saved every installment of the Solo and Skywalker families at one time or another.”
Jag’s eyebrows shot up.
The woman standing next Karrde looked at him, one eyebrow raised.
“You always manage to forget mentioning how many times they have helped you.” She noted in amusement. “ Or the number of times it has been my suggestion to assist the New republic.”
Karrde grinned. “ Right as always, Shada.” He turned to Jaina and the rest of the squadron. “ You are probably tired, so why don’t we go find some quarters for you, and you can tell me about the long faces you’re wearing.”

--------------------------------------------
Leia stood in line to get the rations that were being issued, Rika Sorusc tugging at her hand. She and hundreds of other citizens had been hiding in the lower levels for several days, as their homes were ravaged by the invaders. There were whispers of food and bacta shortages, but the supplies had held out until now. It reminded Leia of the war with Ysanne Isard, and the blockades she had set up.
Never in all the years as senator and Chief of state could she remember feeling so helpless. There was no negotiating with hunger and death, only silent pleas for deliverance. Leia knew the odds of the remainder of the New Republic’s fleet liberating them soon were slim.
She had not seen any of her family, though she could sense Luke close by. She had heard rumors that Han was once again in the character of the hero, risking his life and ship running blockades to bring supplies to the starving people of Coruscant. A scrambled message had appeared on her pager, telling her Mara had escaped, and was headed to the Academy. She still knew nothing about Jaina or Jacen. The force told her Jaina was fine, but her read on Jacen was a blank.
She reached out and numbly took the packet of rations offered to her.
Rika was fussing about something, and pulling incessantly on her hand, so Leia picked her up and walked back to the area she had reserved for herself, Jaryk and Rika. Jaryk looked up as she approached and took the package of rations from her.
“Thank you.” She said quietly, sitting down.
Jaryk only nodded.
Leia sat Rika in between her legs and picked up the package. She opened it and handed a ration bar to Jaryk before unwrapping one for herself. She surveyed the room for what must have been the hundredth time. The large area held too many families in too little room. Children sprawled out on the floor, somehow managing to possess enough carefree innocence to sleep. Parents sat in their general area, somber faces and sad eyes staring at the floor or wall, refusing to meet anyone’s gaze.
Watchmen paced the windows and the walkways, alert for any sign of enemy troops. Engineers inspected every support beam and strut for rust or other corrosion, replacing bolts or rivets occasionally. Judging from the pleased look on their faces, the building was structurally sound.
Leia sighed and made a face at the ration bar in her hand. Military rations were not her idea of a gourmet meal. If she had any weight in the Senate after this war, the first motion she would put into order was new rationing policies.
Rika reached up and grabbed the bar from her.
“Hey!” Leia protested. “ That was mine!”
Jaryk laughed.
Rika looked up with calm eyes as she attempted to fit the entire bar into her mouth.
“Oh, fine.” Leia gave in. “You can have it. I don’t like that kind
anyway.”
Jaryk laughed again. “ She’s trying to eat it all at once!”
“ I can see that.” Leia said dryly. She took the bar from the baby.
Rika looked up at Leia, an expression of confusion on her face. Her lips began to tremble, and tears filled her eyes.
“Oh, no.” Jaryk said.
The little girl let out a wail.
Leia broke off a piece of the bar and handed it to her.
Rika sniffed loudly and reached for it with obvious pleasure. She sat quietly, chewing on the bar and looking around.
“Well, I’m glad that’s solved.” Leia noted.
Jaryk nodded. “You have no idea how hard she is to be around when she cries.” He shuddered. “ Her nose starts running, and her eyes get red.” He looked at Leia with a new respect. “ I’m surprised that you got her stopped. Usually, she cries for hours, even if you give her what she wants.”
Leia smiled. “ I have a daughter of my own. She used to do the same thing. My husband was usually the only one who could calm her.”
Jaryk looked at her thoughtfully. “ Your daughter is the one my mom flies with, right?”
Leia nodded. “ Yes, she is.” She looked dubiously at the ration bar in her hand before taking another bight off the end opposite to that which Rika had tasted and changed the subject. “ How are you liking the Academy?”
Jaryk shrugged. “ It’s ok. All those classes.” He made a face. “It’s hard to keep up with, but I’ve made some new friends.” He looked thoughtful. “ A lot of them are better than I am.” He admitted. “I’m still getting the hang of it.” He took a bite. “The Temple sure is big.”
Leia nodded. “Yes, it is. Did Master Skywalker tell you that they had to rebuild it a few years ago?”
Jaryk thought for a moment. “ No, I don’t think so. What happened?”
Leia finished the last of her bar and brushed the crumbs off her suit.
“It was destroyed in the war with the Yuzhan Vong.” She looked at him. “How old are you?”
“Nine.”
Leia nodded. “So you only would have been about five when it started.”
“I guess so.”
She shook her head. “It was a long war. Too many people
died.” She said quietly.
Jaryk was quiet for a moment. “My mom said your son died. Was it in that war?”
Leia nodded. “He was only seventeen.” She smiled sadly. “I miss him sometimes.”
Jaryk eyes looked faraway. “I miss my dad.”
Leia smiled. “I know. I miss my father, too.”
“Your father?” a look of surprise flashed across his face.
She grinned. “Let me guess, you thought I was too old to have a father?”
Jaryk blushed. “Well, yeah.”
She shook her head. “You think just like my son, Jacen.” She laughed. “You wouldn’t believe how long it took to convince him that I didn’t have a seat in the Senate during the Clone Wars.”
Jaryk looked puzzled. “Why didn’t you?”
Leia laughed. “Let’s see… do you want a reason other than the fact that I wasn’t even born then?”
Jaryk’s mouth dropped open. “You weren’t?!”
“Nope.”
“Oh. Wow.”
Leia looked at her wrist chronometer and yawned. “ Ok, I think it’s time for bed, don’t you?”

The Hapan Battle Dragons had once been the fear of the galaxy, roaming the known regions to conquer new worlds for the Queen Mother and defending the independence of their cluster of worlds. During the Emperor’s reign, the Hapes cluster was the last pocket of resistance, creating an essential handhold for the Rebellion.
Now, fleet was meant more for looking impressive than pirating and defending. Most of the once famous analog cruisers were now inactive except for training purposes, operated by a skeleton crew. They were ready to resume their old reputation once again, however, if the need should ever arise.
Although the Queen Mother’s own flagship ran on a full crew, its long corridors were largely empty. Silence seemed to permeate the very walls, as if the ship was mourning for those who would never walk the halls of their own ships again. Soft, sad darkness reigned, giving the ship a dead feeling.
Two days after Coruscant’s demise, and the Dragonfire was still on its way to Hapes by the most indirect route Ta’a Chume would allow.
Isan Dsel sat outside one of the sleeping cabins thinking. He was motionless, as he had been for the last several hours. His eyes were closed, every other sense alert. His ears heard every sound on the ship; his skin felt every breath of air. His fingers rested near the hilt of military-issue blaster, the natural instinct of a trained bodyguard ruling his every action.
He knew everyone one else on the ship was asleep, but the idea didn’t bother him. He needed to think, and he liked being alone. Being the Queen Mother’s bodyguard allowed for very little privacy, and he took the moments he could get.
He took a deep, slow breath before exhaling in a sigh. His father had taught hem the importance of proper breathing when you were trying to calm your mind. It was a lesson that had been his companion on nights such as this one.
Images flashed through his mind as he attempted to sort through everything that had occurred over the last few days.
The original air raid siren. People scrambling to gather the things they could not rebuild their lives without. The traffic mess that built as sector after sector was ordered to evacuate. The air traffic ban. The hours of frustration trying to get the Queen Mother offplanet and appease Ta’a Chume. The slamming fear when he first discovered Tenel Ka had left the Dragonfire. His momentary anger when he finally tracked her down. He let out his breath again. Another flash. People in the war room rushing to get everything movable to the lowest levels. Tenel Ka turning around to face him, the carefully maintained shields guarding her eyes, the muscles in her forearms rippling as she clenched and unclenched her fists. Dragging her to the Dragonfire. Her determination as she logged onto the holonet and transmitted the order for the fleet to be mobilized.
He’d watched her sit at the net terminal, sign the order as quickly as the heat tracking could read her signature, and depress the transmit icon with carefully controlled anger. Then she’d turned and walked to her cabin.
He brushed his fingers across his face and sighed again. He’d known when he was training that this job would be hard, but this was not what he had expected. Tenel Ka had not been the typical princess, so he didn’t know why he had counted on her being a relatively stereotyped queen. She had her own ideas of where her worlds were going, and politics was not going to keep her from doing everything that she thought was right.
The door beside him clicked as it eased open. Isan opened his eyes slowly and looked up. Tenel Ka was coming out of her suite, clad in her green-scaled armor. She glanced at him before letting her door fall shut again. Isan watched her calmly.
“Isan.” She said, nodding.
“My lady.” He replied respectfully.
She started down the hall to the calisthenics room.
Isan stood and followed her. The dark circles under her eyes were the only external sign that she hadn’t been sleeping well, but he knew her too well to be fooled.
He sat down on one of the benches in the calisthenics room and began lifting a pair of weights. Tenel Ka walked out onto the open floor, picked up a remote and turned it on. It buzzed and whirred as it rose out of her hand. She kept one eye on the remote as she unclipped her lightsaber from her belt.
Isan watched her as she flipped through a series of parries and deflections. She was trying hard not to let the exhaustion show, but Isan had known her since they were children, and even little things were easy for him to see. Her movements were forced, concentration and determination taking control in the place of grace.
She shut her lightsaber off and switched on another remote. As soon as the second remote was in the air, she lifted her lightsaber again and blocked the oncoming energy bolts. For a few moments, Isan saw the old Tenel Ka as she whirled easily between the two remotes, forcing the remotes to switch to the defensive and dodge the bolts she sent back at them. This was the woman that acted first and let her thinking catch up with her as she went along. The walls and masks that had been in place since they fled Coruscant fell away, and she let herself fall into the force, flowing with it. She seemed to move by some will other than her own. Carefully tampered emotion rose to the surface, transforming her from the calm, unmovable queen into a girl who felt the weight of every voice in the galaxy.
She looked up and saw his eyes on her, and the moment was lost. The shields flew back up, the emotions pushed away once again.
Isan waited until her energy was spent and she put away the remotes.
“You don’t have to hide from me.” Isan said quietly as she passed him on the way out.
Tenel Ka paused at the door and turned around slowly. “ I am not hiding anything from you.”
Isan hesitated, then crossed a line he knew he would never be able to undo. “I hear you crying at night.”
Tenel Ka blinked slowly.
Isan looked down. He picked up the solar panel that hung around her neck.
“What has he done to earn to earn your love?” he asked in frustration, dropping the chain.
She looked steadily at him.
“Nothing.” She lifted her chin. “Everything.”
Isan turned and left. This job was too taxing on his heart.

Jacen pushed the door to Tezira’s personal training room open cautiously. The cook had merely gestured toward the door and offered a vague warning before handing him a tray and shutting the kitchen door behind him.
He wasn’t sure what he was expecting, but he couldn’t remember being this nervous in a long time.
The room appeared empty, so Jacen weaved his way through various pieces of unrecognizable exorcise equipment and set the tray on a table. He turned back around.
And stopped just in time to avoid being skewered by the knife positioned near his carotid artery.
“What are you doing?” Tezira’s hard voice was easily remembered.
“Uhh, putting the tray on the table.” Jacen said slowly, resisting the urge to drop to his knees and beg.
Her icy blue eyes narrowed. “ And who gave you permission to be in here?”
“The cook told me to bring it in here.” He answered.
Tezira seemed to be thinking about it. “Taste it.” She said removing the knife.
“What?” Jacen asked, confused.
“Taste it. If it’s poisoned,” she smiled, “you die first.”
Jacen shrugged and popped a pastry into his mouth, luxuriously savoring the taste. He caught a flicker of annoyance of from Tezira before it disappeared behind carefully maintained shields.
She nodded. “You may go.”
Jacen bowed slightly before backing out of the room.
I can’t believe I let her sneak up on me like that. He shook his head. I’m losing my edge.
That was when he realized what had been bothering him about her since the night on the bridge of the Aurora.
It was as if she had no emotion, or she was so good at shielding it that even the Force had no clear reading on her. Everything about her made think of titanium at absolute zero.
Something else was bothering him, but he wasn’t what.

Jaina awoke to the sound of knocking on her door. Disoriented, she frowned as she pieced together the events of the day before. Then she remembered where she was and why.
“Hang on.” She called climbing out of bed and pulling a flightsuit on.
She opened the door to find Jag standing there.
“Hey.” She said sleepily.
“Hey. Did you sleep well?” he asked kindly.
She nodded. “I must have. I don’t remember waking up at all.”
They were quiet for a moment.
“The Yellow Aces just arrived.” Jag said finally. “ Wes is about to give a briefing. Kyp said to let you sleep, but I thought you might like to hear this.”
Jaina smiled in appreciation. “Thanks. I do.” She stepped out into hall and closed her cabin door. “Where are we going?” she asked as she followed Jag down the hall.
“The bridge.” He said, walking at a pace that required Jaina to take two steps to his one.
“Is the news good or bad?” she asked.
Jag shook his head. “There’s a blockade in the inner core system. All communications with those on-planet is out of the question.” He looked at her. “Your aunt made it off in time, though.”
Jaina allowed a small smile. “I for one feel safer now.”
Jag chuckled and opened the blast door that separated the bridge from the rest of the ship, allowing Jaina to precede him.
Kyp glared at them when they appeared.
“You were supposed to let her sleep.” He growled at Jag. “We don’t need her for this.”
Jaina waved her hand in dismission. “It’s fine. If I got anymore sleep, I would have turned into a mud sloth. I wanted to see this.” She looked at her nails. “And I’ll forget you ever mentioned the last part.” She stared straight ahead, waiting for the brief to start.
Kyp continued to glare at Jag around her. Jag just gazed mildly back.
“And neg the faces.” She added without shifting her eyes.
Kyp scowled.
Jag tried to hide an out of character smile.
At that moment, Wes Janson, commander of the Tanaab Yellow Aces, stepped to the center of the area.
“Yesterday’s disaster was the result of several mistakes.” He began without preamble. “ One being not enough surveillance of surveillance.” He paused for a moment. “ Security has sensors halfway across the galaxy monitoring shielding conditions, but what about sensor security? How do we make sure someone doesn’t sabotage the sensors?” several nervous laughs rolled through the group. “ Well, that’s not the problem at the moment, but you can be sure when this is over, I will make it a point to convince the almighty Senate to take such security measures. The problem at the moment is our strategy. More accurately, how are we going to blow the pants off this new enemy?” he shook his head. “It definitely isn’t going to be by attacking the ships blockading Coruscant with all we’ve got in these two puny squadrons.” He stepped to a control panel and depressed a key. A holo of several worlds popped up. “Various informants whose names I am not free to speak sent me information on the targets of this dissenting group. Our plan is going to be exploiting their battle plans and countering them.” He waved at the holofield. “Once we get enough support, we’ll attempt to aide Coruscant. I’m assigning strategy groups now. Colonel Fel, you’ll be in charge of specific squadron communication and inter-strategy. Commander Wells, you’ll be in charge of general strategy…”

Jacen had a bad feeling about this. He and Jaina had learned very early on, whenever someone in charge wanted to see you, it was a good bet you were in trouble.
One of the problems of growing up around Jedi was you quickly learned the futility of lying. Since everyone had a clear read on you, there was no point. This was one reason he had never become very good at bluffing.
Somehow, though, he didn’t think it would’ve helped now anyway. He suspected even his father could not have fooled Tezira.
For the second time in less than forty-eight hours, he slowly palmed the security scanner and pushed the door open.
Once again, the room looked lifeless, but Jacen knew better than to trust his eyes this time. He reached out with the force and searched the room. He frowned. No one but—
“You’re five minutes late.” A cold voice from behind him said.
Jacen nearly jumped. He attempted to calm himself before turning around, but he didn’t think it was very convincing.
“I know. I’m sorry, but my other job took longer than expected.”
Tezira blinked as if to say, “so what?”
“I’m sorry?” he offered again.
She finally turned and picked up a datapad off the table.
“Which weapon do you prefer?” she asked. “And be honest, because you will be fighting with which ever you choose.”
Jacen frowned. He didn’t like the sound of that one bit. He looked at the datapad. The choices were blaster, dagger, some kind of stun whip that could be converted into a laser, and grenade darts.
He selected the dagger and waited for further instruction.
A young courier walked in through a door to the side Jacen hadn’t noticed earlier.
Tezira took the sheathed dagger from him and handed it to Jacen.
“And before you get any bright ideas about killing me and escaping, I had a sensor implanted in you.” She smirked. “ Anything happens to me, and an acidic poison is released into your bloodstream.” She eyed him. “I don’t think burning from the inside out is the most pleasant of partings
Jacen filed that warning under “HEED” with all the others she had served him.
“I’m afraid I still do not understand.” He said.
“Do you need a diagram to explain how the poison works?” she asked sarcastically.
Jacen shook his head. “About the dagger.”
Tezira shrugged. “ I’m bored; I need a little excitement, and I find you very entertaining.” She shifted into a slight crouch, her fingers splayed.
“You want me to fight me?” he felt foolish for not having gotten it earlier.
Tezira narrowed her eyes and uttered an oath Jacen hadn’t heard even his father since the time Jaina had crashed he Falcon into the luxury cruiser of one of the most important ambassadors the New Republic had ties with.
“Yes, I wish to fight.” She said coolly. “If you fear you can not win,” she flashed a mocking smile, “do not worry, it is not a duel to the death. Not this time.” She added.
Jacen was not comforted by this, but it looked as if he had not choice.
With an inward sigh, he dropped into a defensive stance.
They circled each other, Tezira’s eyes fixed on the silver blade in Jacen’s hand. Jacen was attempting to analyze her weaknesses to figure out what the best strategy was.
He was surprised when Tezira suddenly lashed out from a couple of feet away. He ducked and rolled away, coming to his feet a small distance away from he had stood a moment before.
Somehow, though, Tezira was there too, waiting. She lashed out again, this time the dagger in her other hand.
Jacen vaulted over her in a series of Force-assisted flips.
Tezira slashed upwards—
Jacen knocked her blade aside with his own.
—and immediately hooked her left foot behind his.
Jacen looked up at the ceiling, wincing. Hitting the floor in a sprawl hurt even more than he thought it would.
Tezira stood over him.
“Be here same time tomorrow.” She said shortly, and stocked away.
