Okay, really, I'm not abandoning you guys...really... My plot bunny is feeling lethargic in the wake of my 5-week practicum (which ends on Sunday...)
Next post is coming along, slowly...but I doubt I'll post anything before Monday, or at the very earliest, Sunday night...
Anyway, thanks again (as always) to my readers...you guys are great

Part 16
*~*
Though the unsettling thought that someone, or something, had erased a memory from his mind, as one might erase a file from a datacard, still lurked unpleasantly in his consciousness, Wedge Antilles found some comfort in keeping busy. Iella, who really was better with Intelligence matters than he, had fervently taken up the investigation, and was working with Tycho to scout the base for unusual activity. So that left Wedge the rather enjoyable task, despite the uneasiness he still felt, of reviving twenty-year-old Rogue Squadron simulations.
Wedge had decided to rebuild Rogue squadron not long after the destruction of the second Death Star, but before the fall of Coruscant, then known in the higher echelons of the Empire as Imperial Center. He had trained and then hand-picked the eleven elite pilots to fill the spaces left by the dead Rebellion heroes, among them Corran Horn and Gavin Darklighter. Bringing online some of the very simulations used in the restoration of the Rogues brought back a rush of memories, and though not all of them were pleasant ones, most brought a smile to his face.
We can always learn from the past,
he mused, watching the technicians assemble some TIE-style simulators to accommodate the Alliance vs. Empire scenarios.
Jaina and her ever-present wingmates had been milling about the area during the preparations, helping where needed, the three of them seemingly quite anxious to test out the old simulations. Wedge shuddered when he found himself thinking of the simulations as
old
…if
they
were old, what did that make him?
He preferred not to dwell on the answer to that question.
*~*
“Rogue Lead, go,” Jaina said, as she watched her engine indicator lights shine brightly green. Sitting in the cockpit of the simulator, Jaina thought on how funny it felt to be playing Rogue Lead, rather than Twin Suns Lead or even Rogue Eleven. She grinned as she wondered what Colonel Darklighter would think of her taking over his position.
“Rogue Two, go,” Kyp echoed a moment later, the amusement surrounding his simulated designation evident in his jovial tone. He turned down the volume of the common channel and switched to a private one. “So what’s the scenario, Sticks?”
Jaina grinned at the revival of her Rogue Squadron nickname. “The
Redemption,
” she replied, answering him on the private line. “Corran tells me it was dreaded in its day.”
A light chuckle came through her speaker. “So, naturally, you pick the worst one first?”
Jaina’s grin grew. “Yep.”
“Although what’s dreaded for Horn-”
“Be nice, dear,” she chided, putting as much condescension into her tone as possible, knowing full well Kyp thought as highly of Corran Horn as her father did of the late Jabba the Hutt.
“As the Goddess wishes,” came Kyp’s amused reply.
The remaining Rogues, a mixture of Twin Suns, Blackmoon, actual Rogue, and even a few Vanguard pilots, had finished checking in, all of them reporting in the green. Jaina deactivated the private link with Kyp, and set up to broadcast to the squadron.
“Okay, Rogues,” she said, pausing as she heard sounds of amusement through her cockpit speakers. They were having as much fun with this as she was. “Here’s the basics of our mission: This is really three simultaneous simulations, with each of our flights of four X-wings defending our very own
Redemption.
The
Redemption
is packed full of wounded, and awaits the arrival of three Medevac shuttles and a corvette, the
Korolev,
which plan to dock and take the wounded out. Our job is to see that happen.”
“That’s it?” queried one of the Rogues, who quickly made a choking noise and added, “Goddess.”
“Oh,” Jaina remarked, with regal boredom, as if her next announcement bore so little value that it had slipped her mind entirely. “Did I mention the Imperial frigate littering the area with TIES and bombers?”
“No, Goddess, you failed to mention that.”
The voice was Kyp’s, and Jaina grinned and nudged him through the Force. “Rogue Two, cut the chatter.”
Stifled laughter, and a powerful Force-tickle, reached her. The latter sent a shiver through her spine and left her skin tingling in a way that threatened her sanity.
Jaina groaned, allowing her helmet to hit the back of her seat.
For Force’s sake, Kyp!
You said ‘be nice’.
I didn’t mean
that
kind of nice…
Specific, Goddess, be specific.
You’re infuriating, Durron.
And
you
like it.
In the cockpit of his simulator, Kyp smirked. “Any further instructions, your Excellency?”
“Yes,” she said, noting that her astromech had completed his calculations. She distributed said coordinates to the other Rogues. “Prepare to go to hyperspace.”
*~*
The cockpit of the TIE bomber was at once familiar and foreign. While the cockpit pod of his own clawcraft bore a near complete likeness to that of Imperial TIEs (fighters, bombers, and interceptors alike) the two-and-a-half decades old model represented by this simulator held some fairly obvious design differences. It was nothing he couldn’t adapt to; indeed, much of the differences actually simplified the crafts operations. There was, however, one very specific component missing that had him feeling fortunate that he wasn’t a TIE pilot of the Rebellion era, or indeed, any era – the TIE had no shields.
What TIEs gained in manoeuvrability and sheer numbers, they lost in durability. One good hit by an X-wing, and pilot and ship became a blazing inferno. TIE pilots, by nature, rarely saw old age. Those who did were either very good, or ungodly lucky. Given that the TIEs also lacked a hyperdrive, a pilot who did survive a battle had a sizable chance of being left behind.
Not that he truly had to worry about those things, being that this was a simulator, but it was enough to cause Jag to appreciate his clawcraft just that much more.
He glanced at his displays, noting that everything seemed in order, then opened a common channel to the other TIE pilots. “TIE flights, this is One Flight Lead,” he announced, receiving a flutter of acknowledging comm-clicks, no doubt from the X-wing pilots among his group. “Our mission is as follows: The
Warsprite
will deploy us in two groups of five – two fighters and three bombers at a time. We are to destroy the Rebel corvette
Korolev
, and the three Medevac shuttles, servicing the
Redemption
. The
Korolev
is our primary target.”
“Oh I know this!” exclaimed one of the X-wing-turned-TIE pilots, likely a Rogue. “Colonel Darklighter told us about it.”
Jag grinned to himself. “You would be wise, pilot, to refrain from expressing your Rebel sympathies here, lest you become our primary target.”
“Acknowledged, Lead,” the pilot said, by her tone recognizing the reprimand as part of the charade of the simulation.
“The initial portion of our flight will be pre-determined by the simulation. Because there are three simulations occurring, several fighters from each flight will be entirely computer-generated.” continued Shawnkyr Nuruodo. “There will be an indication when you are required to assume control of your fighter. Be warned that the simulator may alter your manoeuvres.”
A warning chime sounded from the overhead speakers of the
Warsprite’s
launch bay, followed by a computer-generated voice announcing the frigate’s return to realspace.
“TIE flights,” Jag said. “Prepare for launch.”
*~*
Corran Horn had meant it when he’d told her the
Redemption
scenario was dreaded. There was honestly no
good
way to play it out – the tactical advantage of each method was mirrored by a disastrous disadvantage. The standard method of running the scenario was to leave three X-wings to guard the
Korolev,
while the fourth took on the TIEs. While this strategy guaranteed that the enemy fighters would be deployed a respectable distance from the
Korolev,
it forced one lone fighter to deal with five fighters at a time. Even with the advantage of shields, the odds against the X-wing stopping all five from reaching the corvette
and
surviving to take on the second flight were slim. The second method, where all four fighters took on the TIEs, increased the chances of destroying the enemy ships, but was generally predetermined to lead to the death of the
Korolev.
It was the hopelessness of the situation that had compelled Jaina to choose this scenario first. Because they were essentially destined to fail, the pilots became bolder, more daring, challenging the simulation to come and get them.
Her flight, consisting of Kyp and one pilot from each of Vanguard and Rogue squadrons, had faired best out of the three groups of X-wings. Because the simulation was her idea, she had insisted upon playing
fleethund
, the lone pilot to take on the TIEs while the other three guarded the
Korolev
against whatever she missed.
She was mostly successful with the first five TIEs, destroying the two fighters and two bombers. The first three were easy kills, but the fourth put up a fight. At last she was able to get him with a proton torpedo, but her concentration on that bomber had allowed the remaining bomber to slip by her, and she was unable to pursue it due to the arrival of the second flight of TIEs. She was confident she could have caught him – or her – before the bomber reached the
Korolev,
but then she would have begun the skirmish with the second group with a distinct disadvantage.
Kyp dealt with the lone bomber pilot with flawless efficiency, reducing it to a flaming ball and a scattering of dust.
The second flight of TIEs, evidently, consisted of stronger pilots. Jaina took out the two fighters, and one of the bombers, before things got messy. The two remaining bombers – whose pilots, Jaina was willing to bet, were Jag and Shawnkyr – slipped by her and headed for the
Korolev
. By this time, the
Warsprite
had jumped into hyperspace, but not before letting go a few lucky shots, both of which rocked the
Korolev
but did not damage it.
As the first bomber exploded, Jaina swung her X-wing around in a tight arc, watching as the other two bombers streaked by her. Kyp and the other two X-wing pilots, on her order, moved to engage the incoming ships. Jaina kicked her throttle to full and sped after them.
Rogues Three and Four moved together to intercept the first bomber, while Kyp veered to meet the second. It evaded expertly, as only a TIE could, slipping from Kyp’s sites as it looped around back of the
Korolev.
Kyp took up chase, disappearing as well behind the corvette.
Noting the location of the other scuffle, about a kilometre out from the
Korolev,
Jaina snap-rolled onto her starboard S-foils and pulled her ship into a tight arc around the front of the corvette, finger resting on the quad laser firing button. The angled solar gather panel and twin pods of the bomber appeared in her sites as she cleared the
Korolev,
but she was unable to get a target lock, and the bomber shot beneath her, now hotly on Kyp’s tail.
Jaina whirled around again, cursing for having missed her shot, and shot after them. She managed to get a lock on the bomber, but at the last moment it rolled out of the lock while still managing to connect its laser blasts to Kyp’s X-wing. Roll completed, he was back on Kyp’s tail, despite the Jedi’s manoeuvring, and he launched a proton bomb.
The bomb connected, and Kyp’s X-wing exploded brilliantly.
Jaina growled, and throttled hard to reach the bomber as it arced back toward the
Korolev.
Another explosion nearby marked the demise of Rogue Three. The bomber cut away from the X-wing debris, only to place itself in Rogue Four’s sites. A quick burst of laser fire sealed its fate.
The fight became two on one as Rogue Four joined Jaina in pursuit of the final bomber. The bomber made a beeline for the
Korolev,
then threw itself into a sharp port loop away from the ship, losing Rogue Four’s tail, though Jaina managed to hang on. Rogue Four swung wide and came about in time to watch the bomber, Jaina still following, complete its loop and head straight toward his X-wing.
Rogue Four evaded, but it was too late. The bomber’s missile tracked and connected, cutting through the port S-foils. The X-wing was thrown into a spin, and collided, most spectacularly, with the
Korolev.
The brilliant explosion filled the battlefield. Jaina headed away from the blast, searching the area for the bomber. She found it nearby, heading straight toward her.
Jaina gunned the throttle and spun her X-wing into a dizzying barrel roll as the bomber came up behind her. He lost her during the roll, and attempted to compensate by vectoring toward the most likely exit of her spin. But Jaina killed the throttle and cut her port engine, bringing the X-wing out of the roll with a sharp jolt, as the fighter spun around on its starboard engine so tightly she could feel the ship’s groan of complaint.
Nauseous from the sharp reversal, though still able to concentrate, Jaina kicked the port engines back online a split second before her ship threatened to continue its spin, and shot straight toward the bomber. The X-wing’s heads-up display painted a blood red rectangle around the TIE bomber, and Jaina jammed her thumb down hard on the firing button.
She never did see the explosion. Cursing, Jaina watched as the stars around her winked out, only to be replaced by blackness. Then the cockpit opened, and Jaina’s ears filled with the sound of applause.
*~*
And I thought the lightsaber duel was difficult. This thing took me soooooo terribly long. Thank the Force for Michael A. Stackpole! By the way, the
Redemption
scenario is one from his X-Wing: Rogue Squadron book. I didn't invent it.
Let me know how you thought I did with this simulated battle...I've never written anything like it before.

And the banter at the beginning was great. It was definitely worth the wait.

- glad you liked
That battle was hard to write, even with the basics of the scenario already there. As for the banter, well...had to...it's Kyp and Jaina!
LP
- Righteous??? Hmm, haven't heard
that
one in a while...except from my mother...As for the "thing in the doorway", I'm afraid, deary, that you will have to wait
hollynkesten
- thank you! And I plan on it
Ro
- I can't even say that
one
time fast, let alone three!! As for finding your own Kyppie, I'm afraid until Lucas gives out Kyp cloning licenses, we might be out of luck.
Mush, yes...action, yes...drama, sure...answers to your question, maybe
And don't make me break out that muzzle!
Arina
- yes, it is really hard to keep everyone straight...that's why I chose this, because there were really only 4 "good guys" to keep track of at a time. Thanks for the WOW!
By the way people, if you haven't already, check out Arina's Kyp Durron story,
