Hopefully there'll be an update soon-ishly...but of course, I've now been plagued with another plot bunny...*sigh* The woes of a fan fiction writer...

Man, I feel like I'm totally neglecting this fic and all you faithful readers. I'd planned for a post to be up tonight, but, alas, got called in to work early (for the second day in a row), then had to finish painting my little sis's birthday present (a pewter model of Treebeard with Merry and Pippin riding on him), clean my room, and the bathroom, because she's coming to see me tomorrow (this has me very excited...she lives a whole time zone away!),

Anyhoo...sorry to leave this so long. I will try to have a post up soon-ish happy

aw, wow.... yay for... for... everything!

And Jaina, Jaina.... that kind of "nice" is a very good kind of nice! haha...

well, very good, as always.
The Redemption part of Rogue Squadron was probably the only thing I liked in that book (plus the hilarity - intended and otherwise - of Mirax/Corran)
so very good. tongue

kyps_goddess - I too enjoy their difference of opinion. Yep, you're right. Jag was in the bomber.

What was that about something in the doorway? devil

TheLurkingPrincess & Rowan_Jade - what is this little discussion you're having? SUPPORT HOSE???? Who *do* you think she is, Ro? And, LP, something tells me that you are not the thing in the doorway.

Ro - you are the crazy one.

djcati - better late than never! Thanks for the awesome, the wow, and the yays.

Sometimes I think I'm the only one who likes Corran Horn and the X-wing books.... sad

Ro again - feeding my flesh eating hamster, and giggling about self mutilating suicidal mice........ *giggles* I missed this comment the first time around...now I'm laughing hysterically.

Are ya gonna post something or not Abby????? - why yes, I am!

~Abby~

PS: I realized after the fact that I may have made the bomber Jag was flying too agile/manoeuvrable for the type of craft the bomber is. Chalk it up to rookie space-battle writing. wink

Part 17

*~*

The flames of a dozen candles burned throughout the dim room, spritzing the surfaces with their flickering light and casting wavering shadows on the barren walls. The darkness of the corners that remained unlit all but hid the small area of the room, creating the illusion that more space lay within the murky blackness. A comfortable heat filled the room, and a tantalizing scent wafted out from the darkest of the corners.

A man stood there, his back to the room, candle light dancing across his lean form and glinting off the silver streaking his dark curls. Steam billowed up from the cooking pan in front of him, which sizzled delectably as he stirred the concoction and added more ingredients to it. He could barely see the contents of the pan, for his body blocked out most of the light, but that didn’t matter much; he knew what he was doing.

Across the room, a young woman lay on her stomach on the room’s only piece of furniture, her legs bent at the knees and crossed in the air at bare ankles, her chin resting on her arms as she watched the man cook. Her stomach rumbled with hunger, teased by the mouth-watering scent of her victory dinner, but she was, for the moment, content to just lay there, comfortable atop the semi-soft bed, simply watching. So she watched, knowing full well that the object of her scrutiny was well aware of her observations. The exhilaration he felt from it rolled off of him as tangibly as the scent from the cooking meal permeated the room.

After shaking some spices into the pan and hearing the satisfying crackle, he covered the meal to let it simmer. He turned and flashed a smile at the girl lying on the bed, the light from the candles glinting off his teeth. She returned his grin as he sauntered over, coming around the side and dropping onto the bed beside her.

“Let it simmer a few minutes,” Kyp remarked, rolling onto his side and propping his head up on his hand. “Then we can eat.”

Jaina turned to mirror his pose, and smiled brightly at him. She glanced around the room, taking in the clusters of candles that made a ring around them. “Where’d you get all this?”

Kyp smiled shyly, and it was evident, even in the dim light, that a story or two lingered behind it. “Just something I had around,” he replied, then winked. “Though they’ve been tucked away for ages.”

Jaina understood the reason for his sudden shyness, given the romantic ambiance the candles created, but didn’t press. Instead, she planted a gentle kiss on the end of his nose. “I love it,” she whispered. “Thanks.”

“The least I could do for my Goddess,” he replied, in a low whisper, and kissed the tip of her nose in return. He let his free hand crawl across the bed to tickle her stomach, then settled it on her hip.

Jaina rolled onto her back and snuggled up next to him, her head nestled comfortably next to his shoulder. “So what are you making me?” she asked, looking up at him.

Kyp smirked. “Hopefully happy,” he answered, and sent her one of the Force-tickles he knew could drive her insane.

Jaina shivered, a smile tugging at the corner of her lips. “I meant for dinner,” she amended, dryly, tapping one of his bare feet with one of her own.

“I’m not telling,” he said, and trapped her foot between his.

Jaina lifted her head from the bed to plant a kiss on his chin. “Keeping secrets?”

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“Question?”

“About what I’m making you.” he hinted.

Catching on, Jaina grinned. “Dinner.” she said, giggling as Kyp pretended to scowl at her, though the humour shone in his eyes.

“That’s not it,” he told her, rising to his knees and leaning over her with an arm on either side of her.

“I know,” Jaina returned, giggling still as she looked up at him. “But it wasn’t a question.”

Kyp tossed his head back to shake the hair out of his face, but his dark curls insisted upon cascading forward again as he looked back down at her. “The question was implied.”

Jaina laughed. “Specific, Durron, be specific.” she teased, repeating his earlier words back to him. “And I’m not answering until you tell me what’s for dinner.”

“Well I’m not telling you until you answer.”

“I guess I’ll find out when we eat it, then.” Jaina decided.

Kyp grinned. “Not if I blindfold you.”

Jaina’s eyes widened briefly at that thought, and she raised her brow. “Resorting to threats, now,” she remarked. “That’s cheating.”

“I fail to see how that could be cheating,” Kyp countered.

“Because,” Jaina began, her tone implying he should have figured it out. “If you’re cheating, it means I can too.”

Before Kyp could react, Jaina turned onto her stomach and scooted forward. She was halfway off the bed, using her hands to crawl forward toward the cookplate in the corner, when he caught her by the hips to pull her back up. She shrieked and fought to find a hand hold on the carpet, but her short nails found no catch, and Kyp easily dragged her back.

“No!” Jaina grunted, hooking her arms over the footboard to hold herself in place while she pummelled Kyp with kicking feet.

Laughing, Kyp leaned over her and pried her arms away from the footboard, hauling her to the middle of the bed. Jaina squealed with laughter as he turned her over again and sat on her, pinning her down. She squirmed in a futile attempt to escape, but he held her firmly in place between his knees.

Kyp placed on hand on her shoulder, further immobilizing her, and used the other to wave a chiding finger in her face. “Oh no you don’t.”

Breathing hard, Jaina caught his finger and pretended to glare. “Has anyone told you lately how stubborn you are?” she wondered.

Kyp laughed and took her hand in his, then leaned down to kiss her. “All the time, Goddess, all the time.”

He claimed another quick kiss, and then the timer on the cookplate sounded. Kyp looked pointedly and Jaina. “Now you stay there and be good.” he warned, crawling off the bed.

Jaina sat herself up, cross-legged, in the centre of the bed, grinning. “You do you know,” she said, as he reached the cookplate.

Without turning around, Kyp began to scoop out portions of food from the pan onto mismatched plates. “I know,” he answered. “I just wanted to make you say it.”

Jaina snorted. “Jerk,”

“Thank you.”

Kyp returned to the bed with their dinner, two heaping platefuls of a colourful mixture of glazed vegetables with cubes of golden-brown meat, nestled atop a pillow of dark steamed grains. He handed the smaller plate, faded green with a lip around the edges, to Jaina, set his own red and brown striped dish on the bed, and sat down facing her.

“Your best dishes?” Jaina remarked, wearing a half-smile.

“I don’t often serve dinner for two.” Kyp replied.

Jaina grinned, and took a mouthful of Kyp’s dinner from her spoon. She began to chew, and her eyes fluttered closed and she groaned around the food in her mouth. Kyp watched her with amusement as she finished chewing, in his opinion experiencing far too much pleasure for simply eating, although he couldn’t say he minded watching.

When she swallowed, Jaina’s eyes flew open and she stared at Kyp with an incredulous stare. “You can cook!” she exclaimed, looking down at her plate and then quickly back up at him.

Kyp smirked. “Well...I can cook three things. This-” He gestured to her plate. “-is one of them. Any experimentation beyond the known generally results in disaster.”

Jaina smiled, then leaned forward to steal a quick kiss. “It’s divine.” she stated, taking another heaping mouthful.

Kyp reached forward and caressed her cheek with the backs of his fingers. “So it’s an acceptable victory dinner?”

Jaina’s eyes rolled back and she nodded emphatically. “Definitely.”

They ate in silence for a few minutes, Jaina hardly pausing between bites, Kyp eating more slowly, mostly watching Jaina. Part of him was still amazed that she was with him, while the other part thanked the Force, the galaxy, and the universe in its entirety that she was. Jaina slowed down, and looked up at him with the slightest hint of a smile, but kept her thoughts to herself. He wondered how much of his own thoughts she was picking up through their Force-bond; he found himself hoping she could read everything he was thinking.

“I can’t believe you let Jag kill you,” Jaina said suddenly, snapping Kyp from his musings.

“I didn’t let him kill me,” Kyp insisted, somewhat defensively.

Jaina grinned. “I don’t think he needed your permission.”

Kyp narrowed his eyes at her. “Lucky shot.” he grumbled.

Jaina giggled. “Looked more like skill to me.”

Kyp glared. “Do you realize you’re aggravating me?”

“Yes.”

“Who’s the jerk?”

Jaina laughed, shaking her head at him, and took another bite. “I can’t believe our scenario got the best score. We lost all pilots but one, and the Korolev.”

“But the loss of our Korolev was a fluke. In the other scenarios, a bomber got a clean kill. And ours lasted the longest.” Kyp explained. “And you, Goddess, got the most kills and stayed alive the longest of all the fighters, not just the X-wings.”

“Thus, my victory dinner.” Jaina finished, nodding. “So, Iella hasn’t had any luck finding out about the-thing-in-the-doorway.”

Kyp nodded, swallowing. “Yeah, Wedge mentioned that.”

“It’s still so weird,” Jaina continued, shivering as she remembered the feeling of complete surprise, of having been entirely unaware of the presence of what was so obviously some sort of being.

Kyp set his plate down, and set his hands on her shoulders. “I know. I don’t like it any more than you do. But there isn’t much we can do about it until we know what it was…if we ever know.”

Jaina leaned forward and planted her forehead into his shoulder, the smooth fabric of his shirt feeling soft against her skin. Her arms came up and draped across his shoulders, her hands joint behind his neck. Kyp kissed the top of her head and then leaned his cheek on it, running his fingers in slow circles over her back. He pulled her into his lap after a moment, and she snuggled there comfortably.

“What are you thinking about, Jaya?” Kyp whispered, after simply holding her in silence for a few moments.

Jaina sighed. “The usual things. Anakin, Jacen, the dark-side…and you; the bright spot in the midst of all that brings pain and sorrow…warming the cold places, soothing the hurt…and making me happy.”

Her disclosure was so freely honest, so touching, that Kyp couldn’t begin to find the words to describe how he felt. Instead, he lifted her head from his shoulder and leant his forehead against hers, looking into her eyes, and dropped his shields beyond the boundaries of their Force-bond, baring his mind to her completely. After only a slight hesitation, he felt Jaina’s own shields lower.

They held the intense connection for several blissful minutes, revelling in the previously unknown sensation of being completely open to another human being. But it was also overwhelming, and slowly their shields began to rise again, returning to a point just below their previous level.

Kyp took Jaina’s face tenderly in his hands, and drew her into a kiss laden with the exhilaration of the moment and fuelled by a strong sensation of desire. Jaina hungrily deepened the kiss, driving her tongue past his heated lips. His own tongue met hers in a passionate dance, mingling and tangling and exploring.

Jaina broke away first, and before Kyp could utter a protest, she attacked his neck, dropping wet kisses wherever she encountered flesh. Kyp’s hands drifted from their place at her shoulders, one tangling itself into her hair, the other lingering under the hemline of her shirt, fingertips tracing feather-light figure-eights over her toned stomach.

When he could no longer stand her absence, Kyp recaptured Jaina’s lips. His fingers drifted upward as they kissed, and although he sensed her awareness of it, she did not object. As he started to lay her down, however, she spoke a muffled word against his lips.

He pulled away, hands now at her waist while she leaned back against her arms. “Jaya?”

Jaina’s cheeks coloured, and she looked off to the side. “I think…we should stop.” she whispered.

Kyp reached out and brushed gentle fingers down her cheek. “Sure, Jaya.” he replied.

Jaina turned to look at him, finding him smiling. “You’re okay with that?”

“No fun for me if you aren’t into it.” he explained, sitting back now and letting his hands fall into his lap.

She smiled her gratitude for his understanding, and crawled forward to place one final kiss on his lips. “Walk me back?” she asked.

“Of course.” he agreed. “Your place, or your parents'?”

Jaina sighed, and slid her half-smile onto her face. “My parents'.” she replied, quietly, wondering how he had known she had been going there. “I feel like thinking for a while.”

*~*

Kyp Durron simply refuses to do what I had planned for him...instead, he does this *glances at paragraphs above*. Ah well, what do you do with strong-willed characters??

A post!!

::dances:: And a long post, which is even better and well worth the wait!

Yeah, Kyp's a stubborn rogue Jedi, ain't he?

Anyways, I loved it. Banter, wrestling, talking, and a romantic dinner. What's not to love?

oh, and this bit, which just made the whole thing That Much Better:

“I can’t believe you let Jag kill you,” Jaina said suddenly, snapping Kyp from his musings.

“I didn’t let him kill me,” Kyp insisted, somewhat defensively.

Jaina grinned. “I don’t think he needed your permission.”
