except I've only been awake for ten minutes, I don't think I can handle "yays" and "wows" right now.

suffice to say I liked it... right?
well, I did. Good stuff. as always

Since I'm horrible in feedbacks, I'm cheating a little here. Self-plagiarism is a most hopeless kind of plagiarism at all. happy

It was actually taking place at MSN. Disclaimer: I don't hate KJA. I just don't like his writing style. happy

Ars says:
Read your update. happy Sweet. happy
No Name says:
Thanks happy
No Name says:
Kyp sort of wrote this one...I had no intention of most of that happening
Ars says:
And yes, Kyp does whatever he wants. It's funny, really. Like he is author and we are just... mediums.
No Name says:
yes, that's it exactly
Ars says:
I have a hard time not to think of him as a real person sometimes. happy It's twice as funny if you consider that such a vibrantly alive character came out of KJA's woody-doll-like books.
No Name says:
I know happy
No Name says:
(woody-doll, he he)
Ars says:
Guess he didn't know what to do with him either. happy

Saber - Yes, I figured if I was going to make everyone wait so long, I might as well make it a long post.

Banter, wrestling, talking, and a romantic dinner. What's not to love? - you forgot "kissing" grin

Dana - Thankies!!!! grin

Jilly - I glad you like!

djcati - Well, I can forgive the lack of "yays" and "wows" given the fact that you just woke up. Glad you liked (and also glad you decided to read this after only just getting up...fanfic, the perfect way to start the day wink )

hollynkesten - Yes, despite completely taking over the post, our Kyppie was very honourable where it counts.

Ro - Long live the MUSH! Terribly sorry to disappoint you about lack of info about the-thing-in-the-doorway...but you have to admit, it keeps you reading mischief

So you and Kyp have similar cooking talents...interesting. Glad you liked the nice long postie...was it worth the wait???

kyps_goddess - you really gotta love candles (well, at least I do!) Hopefully it won't be as long between updates, but I'm making no promises!

Babi_Tahiri - welcome back! Glad to know you're still reading.

I've never read the book it came from, so I don't know what's yours and what's not. - The Redemption scenario (ie, the details about the mission), and the tactic Jaina used during the simulation (one fighter taking on the TIES/Bombers while the other three guard the ship) are from "Rogue Squadron". The details of what happened are mine. Glad you liked it, and I always appreciate a "wow".

Arina - Well, glad you replied, even if it was cheating. Heck, you could even just type your name as a reply, and I'd be happy because I know you're reading (even if I really do KNOW that you're reading!)

Jez - Hmmm...there seems to be a lot of people with Kyp's culinary abilities. He he...glad you liked.

~Abby~

Yes, Kyp & I Have MORE than just cooking in common...... We're both old! We're both dark haired (although mine's been dyed so much I'm not too sure of that anymore). We're both stubborn as all get out! We're both kinda evil devil grin ! And we are both gifted with a tremendously "unusual" sense of humor!

No, waiting for your last loooooooooong postie was not the hard part, not finding out what the $@#& was in the doorway was the hard part! I'm getting impatient here Abs! I may have to start to play rough if you don't tell me/us what is in the doorway! grin frustrated

Ro- - And we are both gifted with a tremendously "unusual" sense of humor! - I would definitely agree with you on that point!

I may have to start to play rough if you don't tell me/us what is in the doorway! - now, I can't tell you just yet, but don't worry, I'll be dropping hints...can't have you knowing everything before it's time, now can I? grin grin grin

red_rose_knight - Glad it was worth the wait. I hope this next part is, too.

Okay, yes, I know, it has been far too long since I updated this...I found it on (I think) page 9, which is the furthest down it's ever been...

You all can blame this neglect on three very specific Darths:

1)Darth Little Sister - (although I love 'er to bits) because she was visiting for 10 days and I didn't write as much...

2)Darth Highlander - my newest obsession. I bought season 1 on DVD and finished it within a week...needless to say, I'd been watching Highlander before bed instead of writing...

3)Darth Arina - That would be Ars_longa, because she's the one who got me hooked on Highlander to begin with!

Now, without further ado...

Part 18

*~*

Borleias Occupation, Day 48

A broad grin grew on Kyp’s face as he shut down the blade of his lightsaber. He clipped it to his belt, then crossed his arms over his chest and smiled smugly down at Jaina, flopped haphazardly on her backside on the black flooring of the Jedi Room.

“Now, you were saying?” he remarked, with casual indifference, as he sauntered over to where her lightsaber lay. He leant to pick it up, but before his fingers could wrap around it, it shot from its place and landed solidly in Jaina’s hand.

Hmph,” she muttered, clutching the saber.

Kyp turned back around, an eyebrow cocked amusedly at the look on Jaina’s face. “We’re not being a sore loser, now are we, Goddess?”

“We weren’t,” Jaina replied, shooting him a glare as she rose to her feet. “But we’re rethinking it.”

Kyp smothered his grin, feeling anything but put off from her glowering stare. He took a couple of steps in her direction, sliding an inquisitive expression onto his face. “What, you didn’t expect to win again, did you?”

“I didn’t expect anything,” Jaina replied shortly.

Kyp’s grin returned and he took a few more steps forward. “So then why are you angry?”

Jaina crossed her arms and hmphed. “I am not angry!”

“You’re not?” he teased, with a laugh. “You sound angry…” He paused, then cocked his head to the side and looked her up and down. “You look angry…”

Jaina grunted, and shook the hilt of her lightsaber in his direction. “Tell me why I haven’t killed you yet…”

Kyp’s smile grew as he again stepped forward, watching the fire in her eyes ignite as he goaded her. “Because that would be giving in to your anger.”

“I. Am. Not. Angry.” Jaina repeated, through clenched teeth. She tossed her lightsaber to the ground and brought her hands to her hips.

“And all because I won the match,” he continued, taking the final few steps toward her. She glared up at him with a look that could have burnt a hole straight through to Borleias’s core. “Really, you shouldn’t let yourself be bothered by something so…trivial.”

“I’m warning you, Durron.” Jaina hissed.

Kyp ignored her threat, and kept speaking in an even, annoyingly calm tone, immensely enjoying every moment. “I mean, you can’t possibly expect to win every time.”

Jaina balanced on her toes, raising herself up to almost his eye level. “That’s not the point.”

Kyp moved another half step forward until barely an inch of space separated them. He set his hands on her shoulders and gently forced her back down to the soles of her feet. The fire still burned in her eyes, though the amount of anger in it had lessened; his physical closeness to her had begun to fuel it instead.

He grinned down at her, a smile that was at once both infuriating and enticing. “Then what is the point?”

Jaina started to reply, sputtering something unintelligible, then paused, glared at him, and shook her head. She opened her mouth again to answer, then tossed her head back and sighed. “I haven’t a kriffing clue.”

A chuckle grew in Kyp’s throat, and soon worked its way into a full-blown laugh. Jaina fell forward and planted her face in Kyp’s shoulder, trying to smother the giggles that she’d been unable to resist. His hands slid from her shoulders to her hips, and then joined behind her back. As she looked back up at him, humour now sparkling within her brown eyes, he pulled her the remaining inch toward him.

“As beautiful as you are when you’re angry,” he began, leaning his upper body back slightly so he could look at her. “I think I like you best when you laugh.”

“But only after you’ve run me through every other emotion first,” Jaina added, looping her own arms around his neck.

“A man needs his excitement,” Kyp agreed, lowering his face toward her.

Jaina licked her lips, a wry smile forming. “Hmm, I bet.”

Kyp brushed her nose with his. “Indeed,” he muttered, before he kissed her.

A few minutes later, Kyp’s comlink beeped. He grumbled against Jaina’s lips, but otherwise ignored the call, concentrating instead on kissing her. Eventually, the beeping stopped, only to be replaced by the double-beep of Jaina’s comlink.

Kyp groaned as Jaina pulled away, reluctantly. She reached to her belt, where the link was clipped, and activated it. “Solo.”

“Jaina…it’s Iella.”

Jaina unclipped the comlink and brought it up so both she and Kyp could hear it clearly. “You found something?” she asked, feeling a surge of excitement.

Iella paused before replying. “I found something…it isn’t much, but I want you to come have a look.”

“Sure thing,” Jaina agreed. “I’ll be right there.”

“Do you by any chance know where I can locate Kyp? He didn’t answer his comm.”

Still standing in his arms, Jaina reached up to cover Kyp’s mouth as he began to chuckle. “Uh, yeah, I think I can find him. We’ll be there in a minute.”

*~*

Kyp and Jaina arrived at Iella’s office a few minutes later, still in their work-out gear, Jedi robes slung under their arms, followed by Jag who had met them in the hallway. Iella looked up from the computer console she was studying, and waved them over wordlessly.

“What is it, Iella?” Jaina asked, taking a place to the right of the seated woman. Kyp moved in beside Jaina, while Jag took a place on the other side of the chair.

“The security recording from the mess hall,” Iella replied. “Lean in and have a look.”

Iella started the playback on the recording. The camera that had made it was stationed on the opposite wall from the doorway, near the ceiling, giving it a clear, bird’s-eye-view of all the comings and goings. Jaina, followed by Jag and Kyp, appeared after half a second in the bottom left corner of the screen. As they moved closer to the door, Jaina turned around to speak to the two men behind her.

Iella paused the recording. “This is about two seconds before Jaina runs into something in the doorway.” she explained, then brought a finger up to the screen to indicate the apparently empty exit. “Note that the doorway, and what can be seen of the hallway beyond, is empty.”

She resumed the playback at half speed. “Jaina starts to turn…the doorway is still empty.” She reduced the speed again slightly, and continued her commentary. “Now watch the doorway carefully…impact! You see that?”

Six pairs of eyes stared intently at the screen, watching as Jaina collided with nothing and started to fall. Seemingly out of midair, just as Jaina began her descent to the floor, appeared a small, dark object, its identity not discernable over the recording. It tumbled end-over-end and landed on the floor about the time Jaina did. For a moment, Kyp’s body blocked the view of the object, but it soon became visible again, skittering into a corner.

Iella again paused the recording. “It seems,” she said. “That our mysterious visitor dropped something.”

“Force,” Jaina breathed, focusing on the tiny, blurred spot lying inconspicuously to the left of the doorway.

“This…thing…becomes stranger and stranger by the second,” Jag observed. “Iella, what was the object?”

Iella smirked, lightly tossing her brown hair over her shoulder. “Keep watching.”

She entered a series of numbers into the console, and the recording jumped ahead a few hours. Jaina, Kyp, and Jag were long gone, and the arrangement of bodies in the room had changed significantly. The dark speck that represented the lost object still sat innocuously in its place. Playback rolled for several seconds before the object suddenly vanished.

A startled murmur arose as Iella switched the recording off. She stood, forming a circle with the other three. “You were saying, Jag?”

“I believe my point has been proven most excellently.” Jag agreed.

Iella smiled wryly. “Any ideas?”

“The Head of Intelligence is asking us if we have any ideas?” Kyp remarked, with a grin.

Jaina elbowed him in the ribs. “This is serious, Kyp.” she said, her annoyance at his attempt at humour evident. “There is somebody wandering around our base, running into people, or watching us, or doing Gods-know-what, or whatever it kriffing wants, because nobody can see it!” She paused her rant, and turned to stare hard at Kyp. “What can be so funny about a completely shielded unknown being that baffles the best Intel officer of the New Republic?”

Kyp stared back at her, angry at her for scolding him as if he were a child, and angry at himself because he knew she was right. “Jaya, I…”

Suddenly, Jaina’s expression switched from her hard, angry stare to a look of bemused enlightenment. “That’s it!”

Kyp blinked, feeling all of her bewilderment but lacking the strange understanding that came with it. “What’s it?”

Jaina grinned. “I’m not sure,” she said. “But I think I might have figured something out. Iella, the three of us have some discussing to do. Is it alright if we get back to you on this?”

Iella smiled and gave a slight nod. “By all means,” she agreed. “But keep me informed. Any lead, no matter now unlikely, could provide the answers we’re looking for.”

Jaina returned the older woman’s nod. “I’ll let you know, whatever we find, before the day is out, okay?”

“Of course.” Iella agreed. “Good luck.”

Jaina grinned. “Thanks. C’mon, you two. It’s brainstorming time.”

Iella nodded her goodbyes to the three of them, and watched as Jaina turned to leave. She reached behind her and grabbed Kyp’s hand, pulling him after her as she headed for the door. Then, almost as an afterthought, she reached for Jag’s hand, likewise to encourage a hasty departure, although her palm failed to find the easy placement its twin found within Kyp’s grasp.

Iella brought a hand to her chin, contemplating the meaning of what she had just witnessed. She thought back to a conversation she’d had with Wedge the day of the incident, and a smile came to her lips.

“Wedge, dear,” she remarked to the empty room. “As usual you have the right idea…but I think you’ve got it all wrong.”

*~*

I was going to combine two posts for this, but this one ended up long enough that I’ll post the next part separately. Good news is that it’s almost entirely written already, so (hopefully) we shouldn’t have so long to wait.

Please note: I’m of the opinion that Jaina is NOT as tiny as that essential guide to characters claims. The authors themselves stated that that was a pre-NJO height. Ergo (I love that word), I’ve estimated her to be about 5 feet 3-4 inches. I have a bunch of reasons, but I don’t feel like writing them out just now. So, that’s why she just needs to stand on tip-toes to be almost eye-level with Kyp, who is 5 feet 10 inches. Yeah, I may be Canadian, but don’t ask me what that is in metres…it confuses me.
