3)Darth Arina - That would be Ars_longa, because she's the one who got me hooked on Highlander to begin with!

Thanks. Can I please have some Force lightening ability and some cookies along with this title? happy And you still didn't rent Desperado. Should I buy it for you? happy

Loved this post-fighting scene, by the way. But you still didn't explain why he let her win the first time. happy

djcati - yep, I do infuriating well, don't I? We've got Jaina and her angst, Saber and her mush, and Abby and her leaving her readers with a desire to strangle her... grin

Babi_Tahiri - he he he...I know you want to know, but you're just going to have to wait as (im)patiently as djcati grin

Dana - *blushes* Thankies for the vote of confidence grin ... I think Downfall or the Fidelis series should have won, too.

The thing on the floor, well, isn't really important. Its presence is the important part. What is is doesn't matter. (In other words, I haven't a kriffing clue!).

Yes, Iella is smart. Guess that's why she's in the Intel business.

Arina - *hands over the force lightening ability and various types of cookies* Here ya go! Oh...actually, I forgot about Desperado *ducks* I'll rent it, really...

JainaDurron - Thankies!

*~*

Now, a special treat!!! Another postie!

I know...WTK! Sometimes I surprise myself grin

Note: I feel the need to re-write part of the exchange between Leia and Jaina on pages 266 – 269 of Rebel Dream. Mostly, it’s because my Jaina is a little more okay with things than Allston’s Jaina. I attribute this to the idea that Kyp is the cause of this…that he’s able to help her more than Jag could. Not that it’s Jag’s fault…she just didn’t know that she really belonged with Kyp grin .

So, some of it is left as-is, and some is changed. Most is paraphrased, and from Jaina’s POV, not Leia’s.

Part 19

*~*

“It’s not much,” Jaina said, as she handed the datacard to Iella. “But we have the beginnings of a theory.”

Iella took the card from Jaina’s hand, and rubbed it absently between her finger and thumb. “They teach you in CorSec that every detail is important, no matter how insignificant it seems.”

Jaina smiled her half-smile, and shrugged. “Well…there is one little detail that might be very significant, if I’m right. But, I’m not sure what it would mean.”

Iella slipped a supportive arm around Jaina’s shoulders. “I’ll review what you’ve come up with.” she said, then brought her mouth close to Jaina’s ear. “We’ll call an Insiders briefing about this in a few days.”

“Okay.” Jaina said, as Iella’s arm slid from her shoulders. “Good night. And thank you.”

“No, thank you.” Iella insisted, holding up the datacard. “I wouldn’t have gotten this far without your hunches.” She smiled warmly at the younger woman. “Now go on and get some rest…or whatever you and Kyp are up to tonight.”

Jaina’s eyes widened and a rosy blush coloured her cheeks. “Um…”

Iella chuckled. “Don’t worry…that husband of mine is clueless. Your secret’s safe with me.”

“H-how?” Jaina stammered, glancing toward the door, beyond which Kyp was waiting.

Iella grinned. “CorSec training, remember? Little details? Next time, try grabbing Jag’s hand first, and don’t look so damned uncomfortable doing it.”

*~*

Following Jaina’s visit with Iella, Twins Suns Squadron was called out for an unscheduled patrol of the system. It was nearly 2200 hours when Kyp and Jaina finally returned to the hallway dedicated to the quarters of the Twin Suns pilots. The hallway was deserted, and there wasn’t a camera nearby, so Jaina felt quite at ease tucked under Kyp’s arm, hers around his waist, her head resting against his chest. They walked together until they reached the first of the security cameras, located conveniently across from Jaina’s door. They came to a stop just before it, Kyp leaning back against the wall, holding Jaina in front of him.

“Staying here?” he asked her, gesturing toward her door. “Or you heading to your parents’ again?”

Jaina sighed, as she leaned forward and rested her head on Kyp’s shoulders. “I think I’ll go there again.” she whispered.

Kyp placed a kiss on her forehead. “It’s helping you, you know.” he told her. “You’re a little bit brighter every time you work something out there.”

“It’s familiar there,” she admitted. “Comforting. I can meditate there, without feeling distracted. It’s…I don’t know.”

“That’s okay,” he soothed. “It’s working. That’s all that matters.”

Jaina pulled away from his shoulder, and leant up to steal a quick kiss. “Care to escort a lady?”

Kyp grinned, and brought her toward him again for another, not-so-quick kiss. “Love to.”

*~*

Jaina said a quick goodbye to Kyp at the door to Han and Leia’s quarters, reading in his eyes and in the feeling she had of him through the Force, the desire to linger, to stay with her, but also the understanding that he couldn’t, that this was her time to be alone, to work through her inner demons in her own way. She admired him for that, for knowing and accepting that she was her own person, even within the context of the relationship they had entered into.

She still wasn’t entirely certain what was happening between her and Kyp, in the sense that everything was still so new that she hadn’t had the chance to figure it all out yet. She knew how he felt about her, and now knew that he had felt that way for longer than he probably cared to admit. She recognized, as well, that her fondness for him, her desire to have him around her, and even her sense of utter betrayal when he’d tricked her at Sernpidal, had all been hints of deeper feelings for the Jedi Master. And she knew he made her happy, made her feel more like herself than she had since the war started.

But where was it going? Was this one of those war-time romances, doomed to fail in times of peace, when those who were close drifted apart, lacking the common ground that kept them together? Or was this something like the relationship her parents had? Han and Leia had found each other during the war, and though they’d had some rough times, they remained as passionate for one another as they had been over two decades earlier. It was too early to tell, she knew, whether she and Kyp would take the first path or the second…but her heart burned for the second path.

She sighed, and rid herself of her boots, gloves, and life support equipment, then curled up in the centre of her parents’ bed, atop the covers, still wearing her jumpsuit. With her thoughts centred on Kyp Durron, she evened her breathing, and easily drifted into a soothing, meditative trance.

She was awakened, sometime later, by a familiar presence, and a sensation of warmth. She opened her eyes, and looked up into the face of her mother, smiling sleepily.

Leia, lying next to Jaina with her arm around her, returned her daughter’s smile. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you.”

Jaina smiled again, and realized, suddenly that she didn’t mind. She pulled her mother’s arm more tightly around herself. “It’s alright.” she whispered. “Since you left, I’ve come here sometimes because I knew I could smell you and Dad here. You’d be all around me even when you weren’t here.”

Leia managed to keep her sense of astonishment from her face, though Jaina felt a glimmer of it through the Force. “Are you all right?” she asked.

Jaina smiled, and nodded slightly. “I think so,” she said, lying back against the pillow. “Or, at least, I’m getting there. I’m starting to remember who I am.”

“So this goddess thing—?”

“Doesn’t confuse me at all. That was never the problem.” Jaina replied, pausing a moment to find the right words. “The problem was being a Jedi, with its traditions and its clear-cut rules, and then being me, where nothing was clear at all.”

Leia chuckled. “Jaina, I’ve been wrestling with the same question since I was only a little older than you are now, and I still don’t have a good answer. Sometimes I’m a Jedi and sometimes I’m not. Jedi teaching says that you must turn away from fear. But as a politician, I have to experience fear. Not just my own. The fear of my allies. The fear of my opponents. If I can’t feel it—if I can’t become it, in a sense—I can’t predict which way their going to jump when trouble hits. Sometimes being a Jedi just runs completely counter to your other goals. The methodology is just too different.”

Jaina smiled again, at her mother’s words, and at her fingers gently stroking her hair. “That’s a part of it, too, I realized.” Jaina replied. “And I figured out that I’m afraid. Not of dying, but of surviving, of reaching the end and realizing that everyone I loved has gone. That I’m alone.”

She paused briefly, letting her words sink in, but started speaking again before Leia could. “It’s already happening. I mean, it was like having a part of me cut off when Anakin died, but with Jacen it’s even worse…” Her voice trailed off, as she began to feel again the heartbreak of losing her twin brother, the other half of her.

“But Jacen—”

“I don’t want to argue that tonight, okay?” Jaina interrupted. “It still, well, it still hurts, but now I’m able to tell myself that I’ll be okay, and actually believe it. For a while, a long while, I was afraid of bringing people close to me, because of how it felt when they died, or how it would feel for them if I died. But now, well, I feel differently.”

“Differently?” Leia asked, speaking softly.

“Yeah,” Jaina replied. “Like, I want to let people in, because if I do that, even though it could never replace those I’ve lost, it helps me feel whole again…feel like me again. It makes being alive easier…worth it.”

Leia smiled, and squeezed Jaina’s shoulders. “Sounds like you really have been doing some thinking.”

Jaina nodded, and rolled onto her back, looking up into her mother’s eyes. “Yeah, I have. Oh, and Mom? There’s something I’ve been wanting to tell you. I wanted to let you know that I finally get it.”

“You get—get what?”

“I had a talk with Mara a few days ago and it really bothered me. It took me until after that really bad furball in space, the one where we almost lost Kyp, to figure it out. I finally understood about you sending us, Jacen and Anakin and me, away when we were little. Having to be away all the time even when we were on Coruscant. I’m not stupid, I always knew why. Responsibilities.” Jaina looked of into the distance of time for a moment. “But I never really understood how badly it had to have hurt you.”

Leia sighed. “Oh, baby. Of course it hurt. I tried to tell you, time after time. But there aren’t even words for that kind of pain.”

“I know.” Jaina said, sitting up. “I’ve got to go. Reports to write. Goddess stuff to do.”

She embraced her mother, tightly. “I love you Mom.”

“I love you, Jaina.”

Borleias Occupation, Day 49

Settling back into life in the biotics building had been made infinitely easier for Leia by the warm welcome from her daughter, and their heart-to-heart of the previous night. Her delightful mood had easily spread to Han, and he had spent the wee hours of the morning keeping her that way.

When she dragged herself from her quarters, she spent some time touching base with Iella, who briefed her on the mess-hall incident. The two women ate a light brunch together, and then Leia excused herself to go in search of Jaina.

Leia had started to become aware of a startling new fact, beginning just before dawn, while she and Han had been awake in their quarters. At first, she hadn’t been sure what she’d felt, and the second and third and fourth times had been equally confusing. But during the fifth incidence, she figured it out.

She was always able to sense Jaina through the Force. Her presence always hovered somewhere in her consciousness, such that when the presence dimmed, Leia noticed. So when Jaina had raised her shields the first time, diminishing all but her existence in the Force, Leia took notice. At uneven intervals throughout the morning, Jaina again raised her shields. The fifth time her shields had gone up had fallen during Leia’s brunch with Iella. The difference came when Jaina’s shields dipped for a split second, accidentally it seemed, and what Leia sensed caused her mind to start whirling.

Jaina and some unknown young man were kissing.

Of her daughter’s beau, she could sense but a male-presence through the Force, in the intuitive way she was able to sense the presence of a stranger in a room. She could not, however, read any emotion from the man whatsoever, nor could she identify him, and so assumed Jaina had used her shields to protect him, as well.

So Leia had gone in search of Jaina, after the fifth time, when she had finally been certain of what was going on. She no longer felt her decision to find Jaina would be met with hostility, or the accusation that she was checking up on her daughter. She simply wished to see her…and of course, to ask her about the person she had spent much of her morning sneaking away with for kisses.

Jaina was in the gymnasium, in the Jedi room, working through some training exercises. Upon Leia’s arrival, Jaina stopped the motions of her work-out, grabbed a towel, and presented her mother with a genuine smile. As Leia reached her, Jaina stepped forward to give her a quick hug.

“Hi,” Jaina said, her tone light and indicative of her happiness to see her mother.

“Hello Jaina,” Leia said. “Working out some frustrations?”

Jaina followed her mother’s eyes to her lightsaber, then shook her head. “Naw,” she said. “Just working out. What brings you by?”

Leia smiled slightly. “Actually,” she said. “I wanted to ask you about something.”

At this, the corner of Jaina’s mouth quirked ever so slightly, as if she knew, and had been expecting this line of questioning. “So, ask,” she said, lightly, with only the slightest amount of hesitation.

Leia decided the straightforward approach would be best. “So, you’ve met someone?” she asked, posing it as both question and fact.

Jaina blushed almost instantly, and her eyes twinkled with some private knowledge. “Well…sort of,” she admitted. “Was it that obvious?”

Leia’s smile grew warmer, and she slid an arm around her daughter. “Not terribly.” she said. “You slipped your shields for a few seconds, that last time.”

Jaina’s grin fluctuated between the embarrassment of being caught and the girlish desire to talk about it. “I thought you might have felt that.” she admitted.

Leia pulled Jaina closer against her side. “I’m happy for you, honey.” she said. “Does he make you happy?”

Jaina nodded, emphatically, and leaned her head on her mother’s shoulder. “It’s still really new,” she admitted. “But…well, yeah, I’m happy. Happier than I’ve been in a long time.”

“Good,” her mother replied, simply.

Jaina grinned again, then chewed at her bottom lip. “Just…don’t tell Dad yet, okay? Nobody’s really supposed to know.”

Leia raised a questioning brow. “Your idea, or his?”

“Both,” Jaina replied, easing her mother’s concerns.

Leia nodded, and kissed her daughter lightly on her cheek. “So, when do I get to meet him?”

Again Jaina blushed, thinking, as quietly as she dare, Oh, you’ve met him…. “Um, not yet Mom,” she replied instead. “You will, though, I promise, okay?”

“Okay.”

Leia’s response was drowned out as an alarm, shrill and urgent, cut through the building.

“Gotta go, Mom,” Jaina said, kissing her mother’s cheek briefly before heading for the door. “I’ll see you when I get back.”

*~*

Kyp caught Jaina coming out of the gym, and pulled her quickly into a side room, closing the door behind them.

“Be careful out there,” he said, pulling her against him.

“I will,” she promised. “You too.”

He kissed her firmly, and all too briefly, before releasing her and hurrying off after her toward the docking bay.

*~*

This is the alarm that signals the beginning of the final battle in Rebel Dream. I’ll take up again after the battle. The only thing that would change about what happens in the book is that Jaina and Kyp exchange looks from inside their canopies, and Jag is probably left thinking about not being “the one”.
