That was short! But that's okay, it was good too. happy

I loved their observations and the bit about sneakiness. Of course, I don't think they are going to get the answer they think they will get. wink

This has been a shameless plug...

Part 14

*~*

“They’re looking at us again,” Jaina stated, resisting the urge to look behind her to where she knew General Antilles and Colonel Celchu were watching them.

Jag, who was facing the two officers, scanned the room casually, sweeping his gaze by Wedge and Tycho just long enough to confirm Jaina’s suspicions. “They’re talking in hushed voices.”

“So are we,” Kyp pointed out.

Jaina threw him a mock-glare. “I think they’re up to something.” she decided.

“They do seem to be in plotting-mode.” Jag agreed. “Hushed voices, fleeting looks, intensely furrowed brows – sure signs of a developing scheme.”

Kyp glanced furtively toward the table with his peripheral vision, taking in the hunched postures of the two officers. “Do you think they know something?”

Jaina scoffed. “Doubt it. But I think they may suspect something.”

“So what’s our plan?” Jag inquired, grinning subtly as both Kyp and Jaina eyed him curiously. “Well,” he continued. “They don’t actually know anything, right?”

“Right,” Jaina agreed, cautiously.

“Chances are some of the dendrites they’re growing over there have my name on them.” Jag explained. “So, I’m in. What do we do?”

Kyp grinned, and regarded Jag with an appreciative look. “You do have personality after all.”

“I’m merely selective about whom I share it with,” Jag replied, allowing a true grin to form.

Jaina looked between the two men and smiled, glad to see that the tension between them was now virtually non-existent. She had been well aware of Jag’s feelings, although for his sake she feigned ignorance, and though he still bore those feelings for her, he seemed to have come to a point of acceptance. Now if we could just find him a girl, Jaina mused, smiling wryly, then everything would be perfect.

“Well, gentlemen,” she began. “Our plan is to be clueless – like we’re completely unaware that they’re planning something.” She paused, while Kyp and Jag looked at her expectantly. “And, I suppose, we may be able to drop them a few false hints along the way, to throw them off.”

Kyp smiled slowly, brushing his leg against hers beneath the table. “Always the Trickster,” he whispered, huskily.

“Easy there,” she cooed, her eyes twinkling as a half-smile appeared on her face.

“Don’t want to give them the right idea,” Jag added, amused. “So, step one?”

Jaina smirked as she slid her chair back from the table. “Watch.”

She stood, pushing the chair away with the backs of her legs, and turned around sharply to face Wedge and Tycho. The two men, who had been looking directly at her, quickly dropped their eyes to focus on the nothingness in the centre of their table, fidgeting slightly in their seats.

Jaina crossed the room, her steps unhurried and her expression betraying nothing. She noticed Wedge glance at her briefly, but pretended not to have seen the action. As she neared them, she made enough noise that, unless a sudden case of deafness had befallen the table, they had to have heard her. Cautiously, Wedge glanced up at her.

“Lieutenant,” he said, quietly, with a nod, his face betraying nothing of what he may have been thinking about her arrival. Tycho likewise acknowledged her presence, his expression equally as impassive.

Jaina smiled, but did not salute, for it was a public area and she was the Goddess. “General, Colonel,” she greeted. “I have a question for you.”

*~*

Across the room, Jaina Solo rose from her seat unexpectedly, and spun around in the direction of their table. Wedge Antilles hastily turned his attention to the tabletop, and began to pick constellations out of the sparkles in the gunmetal finish as he struggled to maintain a casual posture. He risked a glance in her direction, suppressing a grimace as he realized she was approaching.

Nearly to the table, Jaina clomped her boots noisily against the flooring, prompting Wedge to look up at her. “Lieutenant,” he greeted, nodding, willing his facial expression to remain as not-guilty as possible.

A smile lifted the corners of Jaina’s mouth, and she joined her hands behind her back. “General, Colonel," she greeted, nodding at him and then Tycho. “I have a question for you.”

Busted, Wedge thought, again forcing down a grimace. Something about the idea of being caught in the act of behaving like a gossipy teenager, by none other than the nineteen-year-old Goddess-incarnate that was Jaina Solo, made his insides twist with embarrassment. He was the General; if anything, they should be gossiping about him, not the other way around.

Swallowing audibly, Wedge straightened his posture and offered Jaina a smile. “What can we do for you?”

Jaina’s grin grew torturously wider, and she hesitated before continuing. Finally, just when he thought he could no longer stand the suspense, she spoke. “I would like to set up some new simulations.”

Wedge blinked in surprise, but recovered his composure quickly enough. “Simulations?” he repeated. “You’ve come up with some more new ideas, have you?”

Jaina shook her head. “Not exactly,” she admitted. “I was actually thinking less along the lines of training sims, and more along the lines of recreation, for something to do off-duty.”

Now Wedge was intrigued. “Okay, try me.”

“Well, I was talking to Corran Horn a while back,” she began, grinning. “And he was telling me about some of the sims you used to run back in the days when you were rebuilding Rogue Squadron.”

Wedge laughed. “Those were training sims,” he told her.

Jaina scoffed and waved her hand. “At the time, yes,” she agreed. “But come on, General, Imperial targets? So entirely obsolete now, as far as training goes.”

Wedge felt a prickle of annoyance run through him, though he realized Jaina was doing it on purpose. He played down his reaction. “Your point, Lieutenant?”

Goddess,” Jaina corrected, haughtily. “While they may not help the pilots learn new ways to battle the Vong, they would serve to sharpen flying skills,” she explained, adding, “And they would be fun.”

Wedge felt his annoyance subside, and his smile returned. “I’ll see what I can do, then, Goddess.”

With that, Jaina nodded, spun on her heal, and sauntered back over to her table to rejoin Kyp and Jag.

Tycho exhaled sharply, and raised his eyebrows in Wedge’s direction. “Do you think she suspected something?”

“I have a hard time believing she didn’t,” Wedge decided.

“She is a Jedi,” Tycho reasoned. “As is Durron.”

Wedge scowled slightly, glanced quickly at the three Twin Suns pilots– none of whom appeared the least bit interested in them – and then turned back to look at Tycho. “I guess I’ll have to work a bit on my sneakiness.”

“Well I wasn’t going to say anything, but since you did…”

“Tycho,”

“Yes Wedge?”

“Shut up.”

*~*

Jaina was grinning as she flopped her backside into her chair. Beneath the table, she bumped Kyp’s leg with her knee. “I could just feel them squirming.”

“I believe you’ve embarrassed the General,” Jag agreed, once again wearing his grim-Jag face, though his green eyes flickered with humour.

“So what did you say to them?” Kyp wondered, having caught the same sensations of discomfort followed by surprise, irritation, and finally humour from the two officers.

“I asked about those sims I was telling you about before.” she replied, turning to Jag. “We’re going to set up some old Rogue Squadron simulations, for fun.”

Jag’s eyebrow twitched and he smiled slowly. “X-Wings against Imperial TIEs, no doubt?”

“Naturally.”

“Well, now this should be most interesting.” he decided. “Count me in on the maiden voyage.”

Jaina nodded and grinned. “You know you didn’t have a choice, right?”

Jag winked. “Hence my prompt compliance.”

“Good good,” Jaina remarked. “So, mortals, what to do in the mean time?”

I could think of a few things, Kyp whispered, looping his foot around Jaina’s ankle and sending her a thought-tickle.

Be good, Jaina cautioned, although she was grinning. “Anyway, we should be making our exit.” She glanced quickly at Kyp and winked, then looked at Jag. “Jagged, for the sake of the interested parties in the corner, would you care to help me up?”

“Certainly, Goddess.” Jag rose gracefully from his seat, moved around the table, and extended a chivalrous hand.

Kyp sensed Wedge and Tycho’s renewed interest in them as Jag helped Jaina to her feet. He had to smile, of course – Jaina’s request for Jag to help her up would lead them to entirely the wrong conclusion, although it was likely they were thinking along those lines already. He didn’t suppose Wedge would be so genially interested if he thought the solution to the puzzle involved Kyp Durron.

Kyp stood, and motioned for Jaina and Jag to go ahead. Nice touch, Goddess.

I try.

They wove their way between the tables, Jaina in the lead followed by Jag and then Kyp. As they neared the door, Jaina spun around, walking backwards. “Nicely done, mortals. We’ll soon have the General adequately misled.”

She spun back around to continue out the door, but found her path barred as she ran into something solid in the doorway. She let out a startled oomph as her breath left her, and in the next moment a jolt of pain shot from her coccyx through the back of her head as she landed hard on the floor.

Kyp, who had tried in vain to catch her, skidded to a stop on his knees next to her head. Jag, who had reacted slower than Kyp despite his closer proximity, dropped to the floor on the other side of her.

Jaina groaned and lifted her head from the floor, Kyp’s hand supporting her. “What happened?” she asked, resting one hand on her forehead while the other slid beneath her to cradle her tailbone.

“You ran into…” Before he could finish, Kyp’s head snapped up. “Why don’t you watch where you’re – ”

But the doorway was empty, as was the long, straight hallway beyond it.

Kyp scanned the room behind him, reaching out with the Force, but aside from the fact that most of the occupants were blatantly watching the scene at the doorway, nothing seemed amiss.

Kyp turned to Jag, whose furrowed brow told him the other man had noticed the suspicious absence, too. “Did you see…?”

Jag shook his head. “No…”

Jaina struggled into a sitting position, now holding the back of her head. “Weird,” she muttered, searching the room as Kyp had done.

“Weird what?” Jag asked.

She shook her head, vaguely, wincing as the action shot bolts of pain through her brain. Kyp placed two fingers on her temple, and the pain dulled. “I don’t know,” she whispered, looking between the two of them. “It’s like, I didn’t even know they were there.”

Kyp cast one last look down the lonely hallway. “And now they’re gone,” he remarked.

Jaina sighed. “And now they’re gone.”

*~*

Well there you have it. I will say no more, except this: after you've read this, go and re-read the first part of the lightsaber post, where Jaina is in her room. devil

And Wedge and Tycho... well, I did say they are behaving like gossiply teenagers, didn't I? happy

Arina - I actually never thought of it that way...I just like Jag. But now that I think about it...yes, that makes perfect sense.

And yes, they were acting a little school-girlish, weren't they?

LumiKuningatar - grin glad you liked!

*giggling hysterically with tears coming out of her eyes*

Oh Abby! That was by far the best part of any fan fic I've ever read! If no one else has ever thought of seconding or thirding my nomination of you they better rethink it after this one! I'd tell you all of the best parts of it but I'd have to copy the whole darn thing! I went back & re-read this and now I'm laughing harder than before.

You've truly made a bright spot in my day. Thank you!

Enough lurking at the kitchen table with my Dell--time to say 'Hey, good stuff!' Good story, Abby. Your descriptions of surroundings are efficient, your character interactions are believable and flow right along, and, yeah--action-packed duel!
My favorite excerpt, in her parents quarters: She had not come for the physical emptiness, but for the ethereal fullness.

Oh, was there something in the doorway?

Hmm, let's see . . .

*scrolls up the page*

She spun back around to continue out the door, but found her path barred as she ran into something solid in the doorway. ...

Kyp, who had tried in vain to catch her, skidded to a stop on his knees next to her head. ...

Yes! What was in the doorway???!!!!

You'd better update soon!!
