Guide for New Readers and Writers
Welcome to the Fan Fiction boards at TheForce.Net! These may be similar to other fan fiction sites you’ve participated in; in other ways, they may be very different.
First of all, all stories posted here must be “family-friendly.” The rating is equivalent to a PG movie, since that is what the Star Wars films are rated as.
While all members of the boards must be at least 13 years old in order to post, the boards can still be read and accessed by younger kids. And some people here like to share the stories with their friends. So if you want to post stronger stuff, such as PG-13 or NC-17, please find another forum.
Examples of G rated stories (from the official publications) include:
Junior Jedi Knights
,
Legacy of the Jedi
Examples of PG rated stories (from the official publications) include:
Jedi Apprentice
series,
Young Jedi Knights
series,
Cloak of Deception
,
Survivor's Quest
,
Cestus Deception
, and
Darth Maul-Shadow Hunter
.
Examples of PG-13 rated stories (from the official publications) include:
The Unifying Force
,
Planet of Twilight
,
the X-wing series
,
I, Jedi
, and
Jedi Trial.
Examples of R rated stories (from the official publications) include:
The Black Fleet Crisis
,
Star by Star
, and
Shatterpoint
.
Examples of NC-17 rated stories (from the official publications) include:
Traitor
For specifics on what is and is not allowed in terms of violence, torture, sexual content and other mature themes, such as drug abuse or suicide, please go to the
Fan Fiction Resource
page and read the FAQ.
In addition to the boards here, there is also a
Fan Fiction Archive
. It is a bit more formal. Stories accepted there must be read and vetted by at least two other readers before being submitted, and the staff of the Archive determine whether to accept them. Only completed stories are accepted. Some beautiful, well-polished work is there, and many of the stories posted here are later sent to the Archive. They also have some boards with interesting and helpful information for writers.
Take a few minutes to look at the header at the top of the boards. It has information on what codes to use to create the smiley faces, and how to set your own preferred settings (like what icon you might like to use to represent your alter ego, or when to tell you if your favorite author has posted). To contact someone, you should click on their name. Information about them will come up on the screen, and somewhere there is a line “Send Private Message.” Click on that to get in touch with them.
I. Too many choices…
The boards are split into five separate areas:
Fan Fiction Resource Forum
– It’s not just for writers, readers are welcome too! Here are questions on characters and situations in the GFFA, opportunities to discuss the craft of writing, such as how to create mood, write dialogue or action scenes, create description. Board policies are discussed, so if you have strong feelings about what you want to see, you should participate. There are also games, challenges and social threads to relax and get to know other fan fiction folks.
Classic Stories
In the beginning, there was only one board of fan fiction, and this was it. Writer’s Resource split off when people posting stories were having trouble finding them because of the many question and discussion threads taking place. The Fan Fiction community still continued to grow at an amazing rate, leading to complaints that stories were still disappearing. So in September of 2003, after a great deal of discussion by the members of the community, a vote was held and it was agreed that the fiction boards would be split to reflect the different eras of Star Wars. The stories currently in progress became part of the Classic Stories board. New stories cannot be added, but you are welcome to read and comment on any which are still in progress.
Before the Saga
The Galaxy Far, Far Away was around long before Queen Amidala faced off against the Trade Federation. Stories about the time before
The Phantom Menace
are posted here. Many are based on the
Jedi Apprentice
novels by Jude Watson and Dave Wolverton, but there are other stories, too… Qui-Gon’s apprenticeship with Dooku, the Sith Wars, the founding of the Jedi and Han Solo’s childhood might all make their appearance here.
The Saga
This is the classic timeline of the films. The Saga begins with Episode I: The Phantom Menace and ends with Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Anything that takes place between the time Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi arrive on Naboo to try to negotiate an end to the Trade Federation blockade and the joyful celebrations of the galaxy as the Rebels celebrate the destruction of the Second Death Star and the death of the Emperor would be posted here.
Beyond the Saga
The death of the Emperor didn’t end the story of the Skywalkers. The many books authorized by Lucasfilm introduced Mara Jade, the children of Han and Leia, and the students of the new Jedi Academy. This is a very popular board, with many stories about the adventures of the Solo children, Luke’s marriage, and even a few speculations about the future of the Jedi Order thousands of years after the end of
Return of the Jedi
.
Can I play, too?
If you are eager to start posting your own stories, you are more than welcome! Please remember that all stories must be rated PG. Slash is not permitted in any form. Neither are very vivid descriptions of torture scenes. The
Fan Fiction Resource Handbook and FAQ
has specific explanations and examples of what is and is not allowed. If you post material that is not considered appropriate, you may be asked to edit it. It could be removed by a moderator, and your privileges to post and participate on the boards might be revoked.
Please pay particular attention to “cussing.” Whether you use it in your stories or just in your discussions, there are some things you can say and some things you can’t. These are the “cuss words” you CAN use:
· hell
· damn
· crap
· ass/arse and derivatives (when not being used as an insult at a person)
· bitch (true dictionary definition and verb usage)
· bastard (only as a verb)
· penis/vagina/any proper term for genitalia (only in a sheer biological sense and discussion)
· bloody
· sod
· bugger
Using anything else could lead to the language being edited out by a mod or locked or even deleted. Remember, little kids can read this stuff. So watch the language.
We encourage new writers to join the Writer’s Resource Forum, both to get helpful hints on improving their writing and also to get to know others in the community. There are also tips on how to interest and attract readers, and challenges and competitions to stir the creative juices.
What are they saying?
Like any community, we have our own strange way of talking. It can be confusing, and we strongly recommend checking out the
Lexicon
at the Fan Fiction Archive, which is very complete and lists just about every term we use here, and a few we don’t. Also, the
Fan Fiction Resource Handbook and FAQ
has an extensive list of the abbreviations you’ll see here. A few terms to know:
Active Topic Notification
–when you click on this, you will automatically get an email every time a new post is made to that particular thread. A good way to know when your favorite stories have been updated!
AU
– Alternate Universe. A story that is contrary to the world of Star Wars as depicted by the films. For example, Leia Skywalker being raised on Tatooine by her Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru.
Baiting
– deliberately posting material that will upset or annoy another user, and incite them to retaliate. It can be subtle or blatant, and it is a bannable offense.
Banning
– denial of posting privileges, usually due to misbehavior. Knowingly violating the terms of service, breaking the rules, posting inappropriate material or swear words, being rude to other posters, these things can lead to your posting privileges being revoked. Usually, it’s for 24 or 48 hours, but repeated offenses or serious offenses can lead to long-term or even permanent bans. Posting with a “sock” while banned is grounds for an extended ban. (see “Sock”)
Beta
– a reader who looks your story over before you post it, to point out errors. Useful for grammar and spelling checks, as well as pointing out problems with continuity and plot holes!
Canon character
– a character created by George Lucas or authorized by Lucasfilm. Luke, Leia, Han and R2D2, for example.
Crossover
– a story where
Star Wars
intersects with some other genre of fandom, or of modern-day earth (for example, the Starship
Enterprise
from
Star Trek
takes on the Death Star). Crossovers are permitted here.
Flaming
– making personal attacks or insults at another user or user, often in response to baiting. A bannable offense.
Lurker
– someone who reads without posting. There are many reasons people do this, and there’s nothing wrong with it.
Mary Sue/Gary Stu
–a somewhat derogatory name for an original character who is more perfect than the original film characters.
Mods
– the moderators. Unpaid volunteers who try to make sure that the rules are enforced. They answer questions, investigate problems and try to make sure that people are following the rules of the Terms of Service.
Obidala
– a fan fiction story where Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padmé have a romantic relationship.
OC
– Original Character. A character created by a fan fiction author who interacts with more well-known film characters.
Plot Bunny
– an idea for a story.
Profic
– published Star Wars fiction authorized by Lucasfilm, such as the Ballantine or Del Rey books.
Sabewan
–a fan fiction story where Obi-Wan and Padmé’s decoy Sabé are romantically involved.
Slash
– fan fiction depicting homosexual relationships. It is not permitted here. The site owners have made that decision, and we comply with it. If you enjoy this type of fiction, you will need to look elsewhere.
Sock
– another name or account created by a user on the boards in addition to their usual one. There are many reasons why one might do this. Posting with a “sock” while banned for misbehavior can get the ban extended.
Spamming
– posting frequent or meaningless messages on the board. Very rude, grounds for banning.
Terms of Service
– a.k.a.
TOS
, these are the rules and guidelines you agree to abide by when you create a new account and every time you post.
“Upping”
– typing the word “up” in your post in order to bring a story to the top of the page. A form of spamming, considered rude by most authors.
Using the Right Fork
1. Do not use Original Characters created by other authors without their permission. It is very rude. If you are not sure whether a character is an OC or not, go to the Writer’s Resource Forum and ask. Many authors use Jedi Healer An-Paj, for example, without realizing that he was created by Jane Jinn.
2. “Upping” is similar to spamming. Typing in “up” just to bring a story to the top of the boards annoys authors. If you want to comment on a story, then make a comment, which is what authors really want. Too much “upping” could be considered “spammy” and could get you banned. If you want to know when your favorite story has been added to, click on “Active Topic Notification.” You will get an email every time a post is made to that thread (another reason “upping” is rude; no one wants their mailboxes crammed with messages that only say “up!”)
3. You are allowed to post links to other sites. However, you cannot start a thread just to advertise another site. Also, if the other site you are linking to has material rated above PG-13, such as stories with “adult” themes, you aren’t allowed to post it.
4. Some authors want constructive criticism and feedback, others don’t. In general, try to find positive things to say about a story. If the author says they want constructive criticism, you should do it in a PM, diplomatically. If you don’t like a story or disagree with the way it is going, then read something else. Everyone has their own personal taste and vision of what GFFA should be.
5. Spoilers are dicey. Technically, you may not post spoilers on the board. If you aren’t sure whether something is a spoiler, it is requested that you post “spoiler” in the title header as a warning. This applies to Episode III stories, some Clone Wars stories, and stories based on new books which may have just come out.
6. Reading and replying to stories written by others is a good way to get readers for your own. It’s also a good idea to read a bit and hang out in the Writer’s Resource Forum before beginning to post, simply to get learn the ropes and get an idea of what is accepted. Posting threads begging for readers or threatening NOT to post if you don’t readers is NOT a good way to get people to read your stuff. It turns people off, in fact.
7. If you don’t like someone’s story, don’t reply and don’t continue reading.
These are just the guidelines. We want you to feel welcome and enjoy your time here. If you see something that bothers you, or a story that you think is inappropriate, please don’t hesitate to contact any of the moderators. That is what we are here for!

RE: Welcome to FanFiction: Beyond the Saga!
...First, since there are no responses, do you not want us to post replies and keep it all for PMs?
Second, good guidelines... but are they RULES?
