RE: Fluctuations of Fate 2 - Changed Circumstances (Post NJO) J/J -UPDATED- JULY 11
Its been a while, I know. I have no wxcuse for my absence other than the fact that since I am entering one of the most important (and therefore stressful) years in school in a couple of weeks (AHHHHHHH!!!), and because of that I've been doing my utmost to get the most out of this summer. As a result, my web time has really been cut down.
Anyhoo, I've managed to 100% finish this fic since the last time I posted, so expect lots of posts over the next week or two....
Enjoy, this is quite a long post
Shelly
"Jaina?" Jacen called,
"Jaina?
"
He had followed his sister into the forest, but there he had quickly lost track of her trail. Extending his Force perceptions he managed to lock down on her presence, but it felt slippery, elusive, like Jaina was actively trying to avoid detection.
He found his sister in a clearing, seated on a low-hanging branch of a tall tree. Jaina was weeping as if her heart was broken, her arms wrapped protectively around her still-flat stomach. Jacen could feel his twin's grief as palpably as if it had been his own.
"Oh Jaya," he said softly, moving over to slip his strong arms around her. Jaina willingly surrendered to his embrace, turning to bury her face against his chest.
"How did I miss things up so much, Jace?" Jaina sobbed. "How did I let myself get like this?"
"Hush," Jacen soothed, gently rubbing his hands in calming motions up and down her tense back. "It will be okay, Jaina, I promise."
"Oh will it?" Jaina challenged, pulling away suddenly.
Jacen nodded. "It will. Don't worry about Dad. He didn't mean what he said. He was just a bit overwhelmed by it all."
"It sure sounded like he was pretty serious about what he was saying," Jaina retorted, her lower lip trembling with emotion.
Jacen shook his head. "That was just Dad being Dad, Jaina. You of all people should know what his temper is like."
Jaina nodded reluctantly. "I guess."
"It's true," Jacen said. "He'll be there for you when you need him. So will Mom, and so will I."
Jaina smiled through her tears. "Thanks."
"Don't mention it.
For the next several minutes an easy silence reigned, broken only by the soft sounds of the woodland life all around the twins.
"So, Jaina," Jacen began suddenly. "Who are your children going to take after more; you or Jag?"
Jaina's lips curved upwards at the sides. "I hadn't really thought of it. In fact I haven't really thought about this pregnancy as being anything other than a big problem."
"Surely it's not all bad?"
"You might be right," Jaina mused. "If this hadn't happened, who knows just how long Jag and I would have danced around the issue of having kids."
"Then maybe this was meant to happen?" Jacen suggested tentatively. "Perhaps it's meant to be?"
Jaina glanced down at her hands where they lay entwined on her abdomen. She took a deep breath. "Only time will tell," she replied softly.
*****
The twins stayed together in the clearing for over an hour. Jaina would willingly have stayed there even longer, but the rumbling emanating from her stomach indicated that she needed to get something to eat.
As they slowly made their way back towards the camp, Jaina leaned heavily on Jacen for support. The toil and stress of the past two weeks had come crashing down on her like a ton of duracrete bricks and she wanted nothing more than a hot meal and a long sleep.
"Not much longer now, sis," Jacen said encouragingly after they had been walking for about 10 minutes. "Once we get home we'll get you fed and then tucked up in bed. You've been through a lot; it's no wonder you're worn out."
"Y'know what I'd really like, Jace?" Jaina replied, her brow wrinkling in thought. "Some mashed protato."
"I'm sure we can manage that," Jacen replied easily.
"With starfruit sugar syrup?" Jaina continued.
Jacen shot his sister a dubious look. "Yeah, if you want. If we don't have any of the dessert syrup, then I'm sure Luke and Mara will. Ben loves the stuff."
Jaina smiled contentedly, and squeezed her brother's arm. "Thanks for being so great. This has to be as big a shock for you as it is for Dad."
"Kinda, I guess," Jacen began, "but it's different. You're my sister, not my…"
He trailed off immediately as he sensed waves of unease and animosity radiating from his twin. "What did I say?" he cried in wonder.
"Not you.
Him
," Jaina muttered bitterly, pointing ahead along the path. Jacen followed the path of her finger to the figure advancing towards them. Intent on talking to Jaina, he had not sensed Zekk's approach.
"What's wrong? It's just Zekk," Jacen asked curiously.
"Trust me, you don't want to know." Jaina replied firmly. "Can we just get home, please?"
The entreaty in his sister's tone made Jacen nod instantly. "Of course we can," he answered.
As Zekk reached the Solos, he paused in front of them. "Is everything okay?" he began, glancing from Jacen to Jaina.
"We will be," Jaina put in curtly. "C'mon, Jace."
"Is there anything I can do?" Zekk asked, noting the both the tearstains on Jaina's cheeks and the way Jacen's arm was wrapped protectively around his sister.
"Thanks, Zekk, really, but I think we'll be fine," Jacen replied, smiling at his old friend. He didn't know what had happened between Zekk and Jaina to make her behave so strangely around him, but Jacen determined there and then to make it his business to find out, and if possible remedy the problem. Given her current predicament, Jaina would need all her friends' help and support.
"If you're sure," Zekk answered, but the concern in his two-toned eyes only intensified.
"We're sure, all right," came Jaina's retort.
Jacen's forehead wrinkled. He had a sneaking suspicion that Zekk knew… something.
Deciding that it was hardly the best time for pressing the matter, Jacen smiled at Zekk again. "We'd best get back to camp," he said. We'll leave you to enjoy your stroll in peace."
"Right," Zekk replied. "Maybe I'll see you later on, Jacen?"
Jacen glanced down at Jaina. "Maybe. I'll see you around, Zekk."
"You will," Zekk answered, smiling at Jaina, who was making a point of not looking in his direction.
With that, Zekk turned and continued on his way deeper into the forest, leaving the twins alone once more.
******
When Jaina and Jacen returned to their temporary home shortly afterwards, Han and Leia were sitting in the living room awaiting them. Han got up immediately and moved towards his daughter, an expression of remorse on his face, but before he could reach her, Jaina shrugged Jacen’s protective arm from where it lay across her shoulders and stepped away from the others.
“I’m going to bed,” she muttered.
“I’ll bring your food in when it’s ready,” Jacen offered. Jaina didn’t reply as she entered her room and shut the door. Jacen stared after her in concern. Han merely sat down again with a heavy sigh.
“Just give her some time alone, Han,” Leia ventured softly, beckoning Jacen to join them where they were sitting.
Han nodded curtly, but the pain in his eyes didn’t diminish.
“I think she’s already forgiven you, Dad.” Jacen said quietly, mindful that raised voices would be overheard by Jaina in the next room. “This is about much more than you yelling at her.”
“I know, kid,” Han replied. “I guess I’m still more than a little stunned by the news.”
“Aren’t we all?” Leia put in, with a slight smile.
“You can say that again,” Jacen said. “It’s all so surreal, somehow. I mean, I was only just getting used to Jaina having a boyfriend, and now she’s going to be a mother? It’s so sudden.”
“Tell me about it!” Han said, shaking his head slowly from side to side in disbelief. “It’s going to be a big change to get used to.”
For the next few minutes silence reigned as they all considered how Jaina’s pregnancy would affect their lives.
Struck by a sudden thought, Jacen rose from the couch. “Jaina said she was hungry,” he explained in reply to his mother’s unspoken question. “She missed lunch, and she has to start eating properly, right?”
Leia nodded. “She does. Do you need a hand preparing something for her?”
Jacen shook his head. “It’s okay, Mom. She said she wants mashed protato, so I should be able to manage all right.”
“Well I’m here if you need me,” Leia replied.
Jacen set to work in the kitchenette, and within a few minutes a plate of steaming protato was sitting on the countertop. Jacen began rooting around in the cupboard where the food supplies were stored. Han and Leia exchanged a curious look. “What are you looking for, Jace?” Han asked.
“Starfruit sugar syrup,” Jacen said matter-of-factly, his head still buried in the depths of the cupboard.
“Why d’you want that?”
“I don’t, but Jaina does.” Jacen explained, emerging from the cupboard, bottle in hand.
“She wants dessert syrup with protato?” Han asked dubiously, eyeing the blue-purple goo Jacen was pouring over Jaina’s plate.
Jacen nodded. “Weird or what?”
Leia had to laugh. “It’s just a craving,” she explained. “It’s perfectly normal during pregnancy. When I was expecting Anakin I would routinely wake up in the middle of the night with an insatiable longing for a nerf steak.”
“I remember that!” Han said, grinning. “You’d get me up at all hours to make it for you.”
Jacen smiled at his parents’ reminisces. “I’d better bring this appetising meal in to Jaina before it gets cold.” He suited action to words, picking up the plate and entering the room he shared with his twin.
Inside, the drab curtains were drawn over, darkening the room. Jaina was sitting hunched on her bed, her knees drawn up by her chest. Jacen sat down beside her and placed the plate down between them.
“You need to eat,” he said.
“I’m not hungry,” she replied brusquely. As she spoke, her stomach rumbled loudly.
“Sure, Jaina. You mightn’t want to eat, but those kids of yours seem to want you to.” Jacen said.
Jaina sighed. “I know, Jacen, thanks.” She sat up straighter, and scrutinised the plate of food. “This smells delicious,” she said, sniffing appreciatively.
“The only way to know for sure is to taste it,” Jacen replied, handing her a fork.
Smiling gratefully at her twin, Jaina began to eat voraciously. Within a couple of minutes the plate was bare.
“I take it you liked it, then?” Jacen asked, knowing the answer already.
Jaina nodded. “Oh yes. Thanks again, both for the food and for putting up with my moods.”
“That’s what I’m here for,” Jacen replied, taking the plate from her and placing it on the room’s small desk. “I want to help you, and so do Mom and Dad.”
Jaina bit her lip. “I know that. I suppose I should go and patch things up with Dad, shouldn’t I?”
“Yeah, I think so. He means well, Jaya.”
Jaina nodded swiftly. “He does, doesn’t he? This has got to be difficult for him, for all of you.”
“I can’t pretend that it won’t take some getting used to,” Jacen said, “but we’ll be fine. Will you?”
Jaina paused for a moment before replying, “I think so. At least I know I have you on my side now, not to mention Mom and Dad.”
“Jag would want to be here for you too,” Jacen said tentatively.
Jaina tensed. “Well, he’s not here, is he?”
“Oookay, then…” Jacen said, sensing that this wasn’t the time to press the issue. “What was all that about with Zekk earlier?” he asked inquisitively, after searching his brains frantically for a different subject.
“I don’t think you want to know about all that,” Jaina replied, not meeting her brother’s gaze.
“I asked, didn’t I?” Jacen challenged.
Jaina sighed. “I suppose you did. You deserve an explanation for how I’ve been behaving around Zekk recently. In a nutshell, shortly after we first got here, Zekk came to me in the woods, and he apologised for not trying to help when I started to fall to the Dark Side. I accepted his apology, and I thought things would go back to the way they used to be between us.”
“They didn’t?” Jacen put in.
“Right,” Jaina continued. “I relaxed my guard, and Zekk took advantage of my trust in him. I was half-asleep, then he kissed me, and naturally, I pushed him away. He started saying all sorts of things, Jace, about how he loved me and how we’re meant to be together. I tried to tell him how I’m in love with Jag, but he just couldn’t seem to accept it. I…I just couldn’t stand anymore of it! I ran away from him, but I just felt so weak… I fainted, and when I came around Zekk was kneeling over me.”
“Go on,” Jacen encouraged, starting to understand Jaina. “What happened?”
“His whole demeanour changed, Jacen. He was so gentle and concerned. He brought be back here to Mom, then suggested she call Master Cilghal to examine me.”
“And that was when you found out that you’re pregnant?” Jacen suggested.
Jaina nodded. “Uh huh. I think Zekk knows that I am too, and that’s why he was so insistent about me seeing Cilghal.”
“I think you’re probably right about that, Jay,” Jacen said. “Earlier on I got the impression that Zekk knew, or at least suspected something. Now, after hearing what happened, I’m certain of it.”
“Me too,” Jaina said. She grimaced. “The question is can we trust him not to spread the news about my pregnancy? If Zekk says something to the wrong person, everything could be made a lot more difficult for me.”
Jacen paused to consider her question. “I think Zekk will keep this quiet, if we ask him to. He wouldn’t want to do anything to hurt you, Jaina. He cares about you too much for that.”
“That’s the problem,” Jaina said wryly.
“Would you like me to talk to Zekk?” Jacen offered. “I can find out for definite just how much he knows, and hopefully persuade him that spreading the news is against your best interests.”
“Please,” Jaina said, with a slight smile. “That’d be great of you, Jacen.”
Jacen rose to his feet and grinned down at her. “What are brothers for?”

Great post,
Shelly
!
Very nice interaction with Jacen and Jaina - Awww!
I'm glad that they suspect that Zekk knows, but somehow I don't think Jacen's talk with him is going to help.
Looking forward to more!

I'm sorry about your grandpa, Chimpo. Would it help cheer you up more if I dedicate the next post of this to you?
And you have a car now? Nice! Who cares how old it is!
*gets image of Chimpo driving, terrifying all other drivers*

Thanks for the PM
Great post. The interaction between Jaina and Jacen is so sweet.
Somehow I get the oddest feeling that Jag finds out and it's cause of Zekk. Wait- Zekk better not tell Jag that he's the father and not Jag. I'll hurt him if he did.
