Mortality
--*--
Summary:
Dealing with the subject of mortality has never been a strong spot of Kyp.
Setting:
5 years post-NJO
Rating:
PG
Author’s Note:
We’ve seen Jaina deal with death, but I always wondered what would happen if it hit Kyp as bad, and this is what I came up with. Please tell me what you think.
--*--
“Do you miss it?”
He didn’t bother to turn around as he heard the voice, so she walked closer to him. He continued to gaze up at the stars above Yavin 4.
“Miss what?”
She went and sat next to him, dangling her legs over the side of the building and glancing down at the steep drop before them.
“The stars…the adventure…” she followed his gaze up to the brilliant skys. “The heroics…”
Kyp snorted, almost a laugh but not quite. “Who could miss that?”
“I know you do.”
He finally turned to look at her, a moment where her attention was focused on the heavens rather than on him. He looked deeply for any sense of happiness in her expression.
He found none.
“What are you doing up here, Jaina?”
She turned to him, still a bit fancied up from the ceremony earlier, but now in much more comfortable clothes. “We missed you at the reception.”
Kyp grimaced and looked away, swinging his legs wildly as he tried to come up with a suitable retort. That had been the one subject that he didn’t want her to bring up.
“I was tired.”
“You’re not that old, Kyp,” she said in disbelief. “You seem confused about something. Want to talk about it?”
“No,” he said bitterly.
She frowned. “What’s your problem?”
“Nothing.”
He stood, brushing his pants off and started to walk away.
She followed.
“I never knew you cared so much…”
“I don’t.”
“Then why are you running away?”
Kyp finally stopped walking and stood firmly with his back to her, his breath coming deeply. She paused as well, looking at him through tearful eyes.
“After all those arguments, all those life changing debates…never knew you had a soft spot for him, did you?”
“I’m not running.”
“He was one of the few people who accepted you through anything, no matter how many times you proved to people that you didn’t deserve that acceptance…especially from him.”
He turned to her, furious. “Stop it, Jaina.”
“You didn’t have the courage to even face his lifeless body.”
He pointed an accusing finger at her. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
She raised a curious eyebrow. “Don’t I? I dare anyone else to get past your barriers more than I have.”
“Aren’t I supposed to be the one with the words of wisdom?”
She smirked. “I guess you trained me well all those years ago.” She folded her arms together, bringing her hand into full view with the ring that he had given her sparkling in the starlight. He stared at it for a moment and she noticed his gaze and her face softened.
“That’s right, Kyp. I’m still here.”
He looked up to her face, seeing nothing but sincerity in her feelings. Without looking down, he fingered his own ring that crowned his left hand, trying to gather up his courage from all those years ago, when it had been necessary. He never figured he would feel so helpless again in his life.
She walked up to him and laid a carrying hand on his arm. “You’re scaring me…”
He still didn’t say anything; unsure whether or not he could make it better for her. Force he wanted to, but the pain now might just be more than he could get rid of himself.
“It was going to happen sooner or later, Kyp,” she said with firmness, though her voice quavered a bit with emotions. “Even uncle Luke would agree with that.”
He broke her gaze and clenched his left hand together, feeling the pain of the situation hit him in full force again. “He made it through so much…how hard would it have been for him to make it through that sickness?”
“What happened to trusting in the force?”
He looked up at her, tears finally pricking at his eyes. “Do you trust in the force, Jaina?”
“Of course I do.”
“And did Master Skywalker trust in the force?”
“Kyp…”
He cut her off, “What good does it do then? He’s gone…He’s gone and he’s not going to miraculously come back.”
She looked at him in confusion and he reached out to caress her cheek.
“Who’s going to be next?”
She inhaled sharply as his full meaning hit her.
“Kyp,” she tensely reached up and pulled him into a fierce hug, her arms wrapping around his neck and his holding tightly onto her waist as if her was afraid to ever let her go again.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
He pulled back out of the hug, but still kept a hold of her, looking at her in al seriousness.
“You love me, Jaina?”
“Of course,” she said softly. “Don’t you love me?”
“Yes, but…but how strong is that?”
Jaina began to panic as she heard Kyp’s words. Never had she felt him so vulnerable. Luke Skywalker’s death had affected billions and billions of people around the galaxy, none so more than her family, but Kyp…Kyp was actually visibly shaken by the sudden and unexpected death of his mentor.
“Kyp, what’s wrong?”
“I…” he couldn’t seem to find the right words, but Jaina waited purposely through the bout of silence until he gathered his train of thought. “I was so devastated at your…at your father’s funeral…never thought I would get through it. Death seemed to have just sprung up on me, like it did with you when Anakin died.”
Jaina felt tears spring up as she remembered.
“But Luke…Force, how many times did I say something so stupid to him and regret it two seconds later, but never tell him so? How many times did I talk down on him? How many times did I betray him?…”
“He understood Kyp. You have to believe that...he understood.”
He looked her deep in the eyes again and his voice dropped lower. “Yes, but I didn’t. Don’t you see? It took his death for me to realize how much I owe to him, how much I should have done, but didn’t.”
She was figuring out more and more as he spoke. “You don’t owe me anything, Kyp.”
“Don’t I?” he turned her words back on her. “Force, Jaina. You’re all I have left anymore. Everyone who’s left me has forced me into this serious depression about all my regrets.” His expression changed to almost anger. “I’ll be Sith spawn if I let that happen to you.”
“It won’t, Kyp, look at me,” she held his head between her hands and forced him to look at her again. “Listen to me. I have no regrets about us. None.”
He still looked doubtful. “How can you be so sure?”
“I married you? What more assurance do I need?”
He could feel where her ring was on her finger as she held his face. He reached up and held that hand in his, running it along her ring. Looking down at it, he could still recall perfectly when he had given it to her.
“Till death do us part, huh?” he looked back up at her and saw that she was smiling slightly.
“No, much longer, Kyp. Much longer…”
--*--
So it didn’t quite come out how I imagined it, but, there you go…any comments?

Beautiful. I loved it. You portrayed Kyp's grief and how he handled it very well.

That was a good idea... we really don't see Kyp dealing with the war/death/aftermath very often other than to simply go out and fight. This was really interesting.
I liked how Jaina was the one to poke Kyp into grieving this time, when with Anakin it was Kyp who had to prod Jaina into mourning. Symbolic, kinda a full circle type thing going on.
...And as one of the other authors that adores killing off characters to see how people react, YAY!!! You killed Han and Luke!!
::ahem:: Sorry.

Abby, I think you misread it. 0.o;
oh, this is.... so... gah, Luke! ;_; Gotta happen sometime...
Yeah... I can imagine how hard it would be for Kyp. No matter what he's done and said, Luke was still one of the first, and only, people to believe in him and help him and... aw.
You almost made me cry...
^^' Very good..

Wow, this is possibly the first fic where I thought how much of an advantage the relationship between K/J had with their disparate ages. It was so beautifully done, the sentiments of loss and hope simultaneously presented were so poignant. Well done!

Eowyn that was wonderful, I loved how you portrayed Kyp and Jaina in this. Death is not an easy thing to deal with, especially if you're like Kyp Durron or Jaina Solo. That was beautifully done. We don't get to see Kyp deal with death too often, so seeing this side of him was nice for a change.

Abby

I do the same thing Abby...it would have been weird with those words at the end though
But I'm glad you did enjoy it and it really didn't freak you out too much! Thanks for your review!
KnightJaina
- Thanks so much! I was hoping that I could get him down right, but I was stilll scared about what others would think, so you said just the right thing, thank you
SaberBlade
- oh well there's one person who I don't have to worry about dodging tomatoes from
yes, the full circle thing too...at first I was going to have this almost like the scene where Jaina and Jag first kiss, but I veered away from that so it was more original like but I still noticed how it was like Kyp and Jaina at Anakin's death as well...glad you enjoyed it Saber
djcati
- so glad you enjoyed it
yes, i did kill Luke, but I ultimatly have no force over the EU writers, so don't take it to heart
Thanks for reviewing!
DarthIshtar
-whoa...um...thanks

Oooh. That was good. Very powerful, very beautiful.
This might sound tacky and condescending, but it's amazing to me how much you've developed as a writer lately. You've grown much stronger in that area. Kudos!
