Rather a weird plot bunny, but oh well. All thanks to Dana for her shiny betaing skills in catching weird sentences and confusing pronouns.

::sigh:: And Star Wars still isn't mine. We know this.

Also, there's an inside joke in here that is legendary in our family. Lead shall catch it-- kudos to whoever else picks it up!

Ben burst into the hanger bay, nearly ran down a tech, shouted an apology over his shoulder, and continued racing across the bay floor to the far side of the hanger. His cousin’s ship luckily had the landing ramp open, and so he didn’t have to hesitate to key in the code before tearing up the sharp-angled ramp and skidding to a halt in the corridor. After a second, he could hear little bursts of static, the hisses of steam, and the clank of metal on metal from the aft passageway, so he turned that direction and soon came across his cousin.

“Hey, cousin Jaina,” he called as he turned into the corridor.

“Cousin Ben,” her muffled voice called back. All he could see of her was two badly stained pant legs and a pair of scuffed-up boots lying along the corridor floor; the rest of her was hidden halfway into the wall. Tools surrounded her feet, and Ben dimly recalled that she had said that the wiring on the Trickster had started to go twitchy, and that she wanted to repair it before it got too bad. “Did your dad send for me?”

He hesitated, but he’d come all this way in such a hurry, and he wasn’t about to back out now.

“No,” he said after a second’s pause. “Um, can I ask you something?”

“Do I have to untangle myself and come out to answer?”

He grinned, relieved. “No– no, you can stay in there.” It would make it easier, actually, he thought, if she wasn’t looking at him.

“All right, ask away. And no, you can’t be my apprentice– I’ve already got one.”

“I know that,” he complained. “And I’ve got another two years before I can leave the Academy anyways. You have to be fifteen, remember?”

“Never kept you from asking before. Can you pass me the hydrospanner?” A grimy hand appeared by her leg, and Ben quickly selected the proper tool and pressed it into her hand, which retracted back into the small access slot in the bottom of the wall that Jaina had managed to squirm herself into. “So what’s the question?”

Ben decided, with the tact that his mother swore he got from his father, to lead up to the question. “Um, I was talking with Jysella in the practice room,” he started.

“So she is practicing. That’s good to know.” There was a soft yelp and a spark of light from the access slot. “Damn it. You didn’t hear that, Ben.”

“Right. Anyways, so I was talking with Jysella, and she told me that you used to date some Imperial pilot and almost married him.” He let the end of that sentence dangle a bit, inviting his cousin to confirm the not-quite-a-question, not-quite-a-statement.

She snorted, and sounded amused. “That’s the first time I’ve heard Jag referred to as ‘some Imperial pilot’.”

Ben blinked, surprised. “Jag? As in, Jagged Fel? The Admiral?” His voice cracked on the last word, something it had been doing for a few months now. But he ignored the embarrassment. “You dated Admiral Fel?”

“During the war, and for about five years afterwards, yes.” Jaina laughed. “You’ve known this, Ben– you should even remember this. You weren’t that young when we split up.”

Why Jysella hadn’t seen fit to mention that the Imperial Jaina had dated was one of Ben’s heroes, he wasn’t quite sure. He’d take it up with her later. But this only made Ben’s question more urgent.

“Right. So, she said that you used to date an Imperial–” he couldn’t quite bring himself to call Admiral Fel ‘some Imperial pilot’, as that just wasn’t done “–but didn’t marry him even when he asked you.”

He heard her sigh. “Does this have a point to it, or are we just reliving my dating history, Ben? Having problems with girls?”

No! That is, um, no. But Jysella was complaining that you haven’t dated anyone since Admiral Fel–”

“–nice to know my apprentice keeps such close tabs on my personal life–” Jaina muttered.

Ben ignored her and kept talking. “–and that you’re always doing stuff with Master Durron and going places with him and talking with him, and Jaina, Jysella thinks that Master Durron asked to marry you and you’re not in love with him, right?” He finished his question all in one desperate breath.

There was a sharp crack from inside the wall, and Jaina lit into a stream of curses. Despite the dire importance of his cousin’s answer, he was a pragmatic boy, and so took careful notes of which curses she used.

“Heard it, heard it, heard it, heard it, ooh, that’s a new one, heard it, heard it...”

Jaina wiggled her way out of the wall’s access slot, one hand putting pressure on what looked to be a rather nasty gash on her forehead. Immediately, Ben felt guilty. “Did you hit your head? Did I make you do that? I’m sorry, it’s no big deal, really, you can forget the question, and I’m sorry I asked, and I’ll just go and–”

“Oh, shut up,” Jaina said, but her voice held affection rather than annoyance. “Yes, you made me do that, but it’s my own fault for trying to sit up inside a wall.” She removed her hand, looked at the blood, and winced before returning her fingers to the cut. “And now,” she said firmly, groaning a bit as she stood up and a joint in her knee popped audibly, “we’re going to go into the galley, where I’m going to clean this up, and you’re going to ask me your question again– but this time, you’re going to breathe a bit when you try it. All right?”

Ben gulped. “Um. Sure. All right.”

She led the way into the galley, where she pulled the medkit from its place on the wall, set it down on the table, and opened it up. “All right, try again.”

He took a deep breath. “Jysella said,” he began, and took another breath to steady himself, “that you used to date an Imperial. She didn’t tell me that it was Admiral Fel.”

Jaina laughed. “Jysella doesn’t quite look up to him the same way you do,” she pointed out.

“But he’s the greatest pilot ever!”

She dabbed at her cut with a bacta patch, and still managed to raise an eyebrow at him. “You better not say that aloud too often, not in this family.”

“I know, I know, Uncle Wedge is the greatest pilot ever, and then you and Uncle Han and Dad, but Admiral Fel!”

Jaina only laughed. “One of these days, you’re going to meet him and find out that he’s an ordinary man and then you’re going to be vastly disappointed.”

“No I won’t!” Realizing that defending his hero was getting him off topic, Ben abruptly changed gears. “Anyways. Jysella said that he asked you to marry him, and that you said no.” He glared at her accusingly. “Is that true?”

Jaina’s grin was twisted. “I’m afraid it is.”

Ben threw his hands up in the air. “How could you have done that! He’s Admiral Fel!”

He had the strong suspicion that she was desperately trying not to laugh. “Oh, I had my reasons, believe me.”

“What?” Ben demanded.

Her eyes grew distant as she put down her bacta patch. “He’s a good man, Ben, but I would have lost... many things that were important to me, if I had married him. And we were both so young, when he asked the first time– yes, he asked me more than once, and yes, I refused all three times, stop looking at me like that. I was too young, Ben, and we were too different.”

Ben stared at her for a long moment, and finally snapped his jaw shut. “Anyways. You dated Admiral Fel, and didn’t marry him, which only proves that you’re as crazy as Uncle Corran says you are.”

Jaina only threw back her head and laughed. “Corran’s a bit biased,” she managed to point out.

“Anyways,” Ben glared, “Jysella says that Master Durron’s asked you to marry him, and since you do everything with him I thought that she might be right, and I wanted to know if you were in love with him because you’re not going to marry him, right?”

Jaina held up a hand. “One more time. Slowly, and breathe this time.”

“Fine.” And, deliberately pacing things out, Ben started again. “Jysella. Says. Master. Durron–”

“Ben,” she said, with just enough of a warning in her voice to remind him of his mother’s ‘I’m-getting-upset’ tone.

He sighed. “Did Master Durron ask you to marry him? And are you going to?”

She was silent for so long that Ben was afraid that she wasn’t going to answer. Then, “Yes, Kyp has asked me to marry him,” she said at last.

Ben felt sick, and couldn’t keep his thoughts from jumbling all together. Jysella was right. They did everything together, and so Jaina was going to marry him and she’d be like Jacen, she’d be taken and be too busy with Durron (that’s what his mom called him, so Ben felt justified using the name). She’d be too busy with Durron and her kids (oh, Sithspawn, Jaina was going to have kids and be a mom, and so she’d be completely ruined for having fun with, because that meant she’d be an adult and responsible). She wouldn’t just be his cousin Jaina anymore, because he’d have to share her with Durron and her kids and that would mean that she’d be different, and he didn’t want different because things were just fine the way they were.

“But,” Jaina continued, “I told him that I wouldn’t.”

Relief shuddered through him. “You– wouldn’t?” Ben managed, and she nodded. “But– Jysella says that you go on missions with him, and talk with him all the time, and let him kiss you–” the last was said as though he couldn’t quite believe it possible “– and you go with him–”

Jaina interrupted him. “My apprentice says an awful lot,” she pointed out. “And, as it may be, all of that is true.”

Ben stared up at Jaina in horror. “Durron kisses you? And you let him?”

She smiled down on him with that grin that Ben was smart enough to realize meant that he was in for it. “Oh, don’t worry, little Benny,” she cooed down at him, “One of these days, there’s going to be a special little girl, and all you’ll want to do is go kiss her, and I’ll make sure to stand there and ask, ‘She kisses you? And you let her?’”

Ben batted away her hand as she tried to ruffle his hair. “Oh, gerroff,” he growled. “You know what I meant.”

She sighed and leaned her hip against the table. “Yeah, I know what you meant. And just so you know what I meant, I don’t mind Kyp kissing me.”

Ben made a gagging noise, as only thirteen-year-old boys could, and Jaina only rolled her eyes. “Ben, Kyp’s a close friend of mine. And before you have to ask again, yes, I do love him. And before you roll your eyes again, I also love you, and Lowie, and Jysella, and quite a few other people. With Kyp, it’s just–” She paused, seemed to search for the correct wording, and then finally shrugged with a strange smile on her face.

Ben waited a heartbeat, and then said fiercely, “If you tell me it’s something I’ll understand when I’m older, I’ll never talk to you again.”

She looked down at him as though she was surprised to hear him speak, and then burst into laughter. “No, Ben, don’t worry. It’s just complicated, and I haven’t even sorted it all out yet. I just don’t want anything to change, but sometimes it’s hard to keep things the way they are without changing.”

“That makes no sense,” Ben said crossly.

Jaina only smiled. “Welcome to the wonderful world of grown-ups, where nothing makes sense. Learn the lesson now, young apprentice: growing up makes everything horribly complicated. Stay young while you can.”

Ben frowned at her. “You say that like you’re old.”

She snorted. “I’m thirty-one, Ben. When I was thirteen, thirty-one was old.”

“All right, so you’re old,” he conceded, a bit surprised to realize that she actually was. “But you’re not that old. I mean, you still understand things.”

An eyebrow rose again. “I guess that’s a compliment. Now, was that the question you had to ask me?”

“Oh. Ummm. Yes.”

“Did I answer it to your satisfaction?”

“I guess so.”

“Good.” She pushed herself away from the table. “Now, I’m going to go fix the wiring again, and you do me a favor and go tell my nosy apprentice that she needs to work on her meditation, not just her lightsaber fighting, will you?”

Ben slid off of his seat. “Yeah, ok. Thanks, cousin Jaina.”

Her voice was amused again as she waved him away and began to repack the medkit. “Not a problem, cousin Ben.”

In which Ben is Jag's biggest fan, Jaina sounds rather confused, and Saber tries writing a bit lightheartedly instead of angstily.

And hopefully Ben's in-character for his age. I had fun with him.

Anyways, there's another post to this, and it's ALMOST done, just need to tinker with the ending a bit methinks, so you shall be getting it soon. But today I'm at the ComicCon-- yay for my guys dragging me off! -- so you'll get the post either late tonight or early tomorrow when I'm coherent again.

What a nice surprise to find after an insane-wanna-skewer-my-eyes-out-or-shoot-somebody-night-shift!

“Heard it, heard it, heard it, heard it, ooh, that’s a new one, heard it, heard it...”

Loved that!

The whole thing about kissing was absolutely brilliant. I think Ben is in character for his age...I know pleanty of thirteen-year-olds boys who still find kissing disgusting. I also liked how Ben was concerned about having to share fun cousin Jaina - very teenager-ish.

Can't wait for the next part!

That was wonderful! Cute isn't the right word for Jaina and Ben's relationship, but it's the closest I can think of... [face_question] Anyways, that was wonderfully written and you had the characters dead on! I love it!

Is it too soon to ask for more?

::Sigh::

OK, so I lied. I can't get the next post up until tonight, because I'm being kidnapped (AGAIN) by my guys to go to ComicCon, and I haven't had time to go over the next post.

::sigh:: I hate making promises I don't keep, but really, this one is their fault, not mine.

Post and replies shall be up later tonight... dj, I suppose that means not until tomorrow morning for you. I'll send Jace flowers in apology grin .
