This was written for the
Halloween '04 Challenge #1
. And, ha, came in at exactly 3,000 words! (Excluding those pesky ellipses that word counters seem to want to count even though they're just DOTS!) Neither of us own "Star Wars". Trust me, if I did . . . well, I'd have lots of money.
"I'm not going in there, Kyp."
Standing outside a building within the amusement park, Jaina surveyed the banner advertising a "haunted house," whatever that was.
"What's the harm?" Kyp shrugged. "Besides, it's not like you've got anything else to do 'til we find the others."
Jaina looked from the poster to Kyp. "You may have a point, but I don't think we're going to find them in there."
"You really don't want to go in there, do you?"
"Gee, what tipped you off?"
He grinned. "The fact you're trying to pull me in the opposite direction."
Jaina stopped. "What's so interesting about this?"
Somewhere inside, someone screamed.
His green eyes were dark with mischief. "That."
"I hate you."
"I know." Kyp grinned.
Jaina rolled her eyes. "Fine, you go in. I'll stay out here."
"What? Is the Goddess scared?" he lightly mocked.
She stiffened and her spine straightened. "I am not."
"Coward," he said. "What are you afraid of?"
"I'm not a coward!" she cried. Huffing, Jaina folded her arms. "Jerk."
"Now, now, no need for name calling," Kyp purred, his grin turning positively malicious. "Besides . . . you killed Tsavong Lah, what in there could
possibly
scare you?"
Jaina considered stomping on his foot. "Fine. I'll go through it. But only to prove I'm not a coward!"
Kyp pulled her over to the entrance. He showed the three-eyed being at the door their passes.
"You may enter," it said in a droning voice, pulling back a curtain that draped across the entryway.
It was pitch-black inside. Involuntarily, Jaina inched closer to Kyp.
"How are we supposed to see in here?" she asked, casting her eyes about for any light.
"I don't think we're supposed to see. Just relax."
Jaina reached out with the Force to orient herself as they shuffled forward. She felt fear, but also excitement and adrenaline from the other patrons inside. Shrieks and screams sounded around them.
"Nuh uh, Goddess," Kyp said in a mild warning tone. "No Force use. I thought you said you weren't afraid?"
With a sigh of disgust, Jaina pulled back. "So the point is to walk through this house, and people try to scare us?" she asked skeptically. Her arm brushed against Kyp's and she realized she was staying close to him as they moved forward. His breathing suddenly sounded close and loud in her ears.
"So, how are we supposed to find our way through if there's no light? Just keep going until we walk into a wall?"
"Probably." Kyp stretched his hand out in front of him.
They started down an impossibly black corridor. Jaina moved slowly, afraid she might trip. Then,
"Aaaah ha ha ha!"
Jaina shrieked as something came at her in the dark. She jumped back, slamming into Kyp.
Kyp caught her mid-fall. She heard him chuckle and felt it rumble in his chest.
"It's not funny," she insisted, her heartbeat slowly pounding back down to a normal rate. The "something" in the dark moved off, probably to scare a few years off the lives of the group behind.
"Sure it's not." His breath stirred the hairs on the top of her head and suddenly, Jaina was very aware of how close she was to Kyp. Her back was pressed to his chest, his arms still around her.
She swallowed. "It startled me, that's all. Can we go now?" She forced irritation into her voice to hide her reaction. Pulling away, she put some distance between them --but not
too
much.
Kyp tried not to smirk as he moved in front of her. "Would you feel better if I lead you?"
"Maybe," she said, still reluctant to admit any weakness. "Move it, Ego Boy."
They continued along, but nothing else accosted them. Kyp was almost disappointed. He wouldn't admit it, but he wanted another chance to hold her.
"What's this Halloween thing again?" Jaina's voice, low and soft, came to him in a moment between the screams behind them. The "something" had indeed got the group behind.
"Uh, I think that woman at the front gate said it was a holiday based on the dead coming back to haunt people, so they have to dress up to scare them away."
"Dress up as something ugly to drive away something equally ugly?
That
makes sense." Jaina snorted.
Kyp shrugged. "There's light ahead."
Something brushed the small of his back. He almost jumped, before realising it was her fingers, latching onto his cape.
"I'm ready," she said. "Bring it on."
He could now see small wisps of fog drifting in the faint light. From the smell, he judged that the fog was fake and only got thicker.
He turned his attention back to Jaina when her fingers grabbed his arm and she shrieked.
"Something touched me!"
Kyp tried to peer over her shoulder, but couldn't see anything. "Something touched you? Something or someone? That sign said the employees aren't supposed to touch us."
"It was something," Jaina said. "Something touched my leg."
Kyp moved around her and took a few steps back down the corridor. He moved slowly--
And jumped as something brushed past his leg.
Laughing, Kyp said, "It's just air. There's a control on the floor, when you step on it, it shoots air at you, makes you think there's something there."
"Well, that's mean," Jaina said.
"I think that's the point, Goddess."
"Shut up and keep going," she scowled, grabbing his wrist and pulling him forward.
"You sound annoyed."
"Maybe 'cause I am."
Kyp moved in front of her, a corner of his mouth lifting as she grabbed his cape and his right arm. "You're not hiding behind me, are you?" he asked teasingly.
"No . . . I'm using you as a shield."
Kyp glanced back over his shoulder at her. "You realise that they'll come at you from behind, right?"
She kicked the back of his leg. "Shut up, Durron."
Kyp smirked and suppressed a snicker. "As you say, Goddess." He led the way forward towards the light. Tendrils of the fog--more like cheap, bad-smelling smoke, he thought--curled around them and made it harder to see. Someone in the group behind them gave a startled yelp. Kyp figured they must have found the air trick.
A scream sounded just around the corner in front of them and Kyp hesitated.
"Don't tell me
you're
afraid, Durron," Jaina laughed.
"Only afraid you'll hurt my arm in your death grip if you get scared again," he shot back.
"I
really
hate you," she told him. She pushed him towards the screaming.
Kyp let Jaina push him forward as he rounded the corner. It was dark but he could see the woman in front of him. She had "blood" streaming down her face, and the red liquid was all over her hands as she screamed over and over.
"Please!" she screamed. "Please help me! They're after me!"
Though he knew the blood was fake, Kyp suppressed a shudder.
Jaina squeaked and pressed her face against Kyp's back. "Can we get out of here? This is a little too . . . disturbing for me."
The woman shrieked and hurried past them. Kyp instinctively turned to let her pass, shielding Jaina between him and the wall. Fake blood soaked the woman's clothes and Kyp made a face.
"This
is
disturbing," he murmured in agreement.
"Then keep going," Jaina pushed him forward again impatiently.
"If you're so impatient, would you like to go ahead of me?" Kyp stepped to the side and bowed.
"Not on your life," Jaina told him. "Move it, mortal."
"Boy, you're pushy." Kyp walked towards the next area. "But I'm warning you, if this next person has a vibroaxe, you're on your own."
"Leave me in here and I'll tell Dad," she said sweetly.
Kyp stared at her for a moment, then said, "Yes, Goddess. Whatever you say, Goddess."
"You learn fast, mortal. You might do."
He parted the curtain with one hand. "Do for what?" he asked, looking at with one eyebrow raised.
She opened her mouth and then shut it as a thought flooded her mind. Blushing, she cursed him silently.
A dangerous grin that made her nearly go weak in the knees slowly crossed his face. When he spoke, his voice was low and smooth. "Does the Goddess need someone to pamper her? To see to her needs? To see to her . . . every need?"
Jaina was speechless. She opened her mouth and shut it again. She felt a tingle down to her toes, which didn't match anything she felt at seeing the employee in another monster mask and dark robe suddenly standing on the other side of the curtain.
Kyp followed her gaze and didn't miss how she crept close to his side as the monster beckoned for them to come through the curtain. He reached behind, extending his hand, only slightly surprised when she took it.
They stepped into the new area, the denizen of the haunted house stepping aside to let them pass. It was dark, like all of the other areas, lit with red lights. A man in black robes, his face painted white, lurched towards them, hands outstretched. The man laughed, rolling his eyes around wildly.
Jaina looked from the man to Kyp. "Okay.
This
is not even remotely scary."
Kyp chuckled as they moved into the next area and down a ramp.
Into a pit of snakes.
Jaina screamed. She knew they weren't real, but they were huge, and the "monster" in the room, a Shistavenan covered in "bloody" rags, waved a large one at her. It reminded her too much of an amphistaff. Besides, she hated snakes, with Jacen's "pets" finding their way into her things.
Kyp wrapped his arms around her, pressing her face into his chest. Walking sideways, he guided her past the Shistavenan.
"It's all right, Goddess. No more snakes."
She looked up, glancing briefly at their surroundings. "Thank you." She looked up and their eyes locked. Once again, awareness swept over her. She took an unsteady breath.
His arms tightened almost imperceptibly around her waist. And then a scream ahead broke the moment and Jaina's head whirled towards the sound.
Kyp paid the scream no heed. His attention was still on Jaina, his eyes roaming over her face and hair. "I didn't like the snakes either. Reminded me too much of amphistaffs," he said absent-mindedly.
"Gee, you think?" Jaina asked, her voice still a little shaky. "Can we just get this over with, please? I want out of here."
He nodded quickly and guided her forward, with his hand at the small of her back. She shivered and moved closer to him.
"Would you like my cape, Goddess?"
"No, that's okay. Just get us out of here, mortal." Jaina suddenly didn't feel so bad about sliding her arm around his waist. It wasn't like she hadn't many times before. It was just . . . that there was something different about this.
Kyp glanced down at the top of her head, feeling . . . like life was perfect with having Jaina tucked against his side like this. Her arm around his waist tickled him through his shirt and made him want her closer. "Not much further, I think," he murmured.
They were met by another person in ghostly face paint at the next turn. "Try not to get lost for too long," it told them with a creepy laugh. "The dead come for those who linger in the maze."
"Great," Jaina muttered. "A maze."
Kyp moved past, through yet another black curtain. "You think they get a special on these?" he quipped.
Jaina gave an unladylike snort. "They buy them wholesale."
The next room, it turned out, was full of ceiling-to-floor strips of white fabric, so dense that it was difficult to see more than two feet ahead of them.
"And I suddenly see why they were laughing," Kyp muttered. "How do we get out of here?"
"We could use the Force," she suggested, remembering what he'd said earlier.
"Don't think it would be much help."
There was a squeal behind them as the next group entered the room. Jaina, without letting go of Kyp, turned around to see a small group of Chadra-fan now shared the white maze.
Jaina started forward through the maze, but got tangled in the white hanging strips. She stumbled and almost fell, before Kyp caught her. His momentum carried them into a white-painted barrier.
She squeaked as she was momentarily flattened against the wall. He quickly backed up, exclaiming, "Sorry!"
Jaina realised he was holding her, and shivered a bit. "It's okay."
"Are you cold?"
"No, I was just surprised, that's all."
"Well, let's see if we can get out of here." Kyp looked over his shoulder to watch the other groups struggling to find their way out. Some looked amused and giggled at getting caught in the strips, others looked frustrated at not being able to find the way out.
Though he'd been reluctant earlier to use the Force, Kyp let a small tendril out, and felt their surroundings. Aside from several life-forms in the room with them, he felt nothing out of place, until--
"Ah, here we go. Follow me!" he said, looking at the small aliens stumbling around in confusion.
Pleased to have a leader, they filed in behind the humans. Kyp gave Jaina an amused look as they pushed through the ragged curtains.
A being, all in white, stepped in front of them. "This is not the way."
Kyp rolled his eyes. "Obviously, it is, or you wouldn't stop us."
"Don't irritate him," Jaina said to the ghoul. "He blows things up."
"Ooooh!" the Chadra-fan said in unison.
"This is not the way," the being in white repeated.
"Fine. We'll go around." Kyp glanced back at Jaina and grasped her hand, and made sure the group of Chadra-fan was going to follow. He started to go around but was blocked again. Kyp sighed, anxious to get Jaina out of there.
He raised his hand in a careless gesture, backing it with a heavy Force-suggestion. "You're going to let us through."
It blinked. "I'm going to let you through."
It stepped aside. Kyp's expression was smug as he led Jaina and their new friends out of the maze.
"That was an abuse of power," Jaina said, but her tone told him she was amused.
"You can tell our new little friends that."
The Chadra-fan were obviously in awe of Kyp, who had somehow "outsmarted" the ghostly being. He passed his eyes over their group. "Did we lose anyone?"
The small aliens shook their heads. Kyp smiled and realized that Jaina hadn't yet pulled her hand from his. He looked down at their enjoined hands, then back up at her.
Jaina was peering ahead, seeming to not even notice or mind. "I think I can see the exit."
Well, if she wasn't bothered, he certainly wasn't going to protest. "Let's head out."
She was eager to leave, so she stepped ahead of Kyp and pulled him down the dark corridor. There was light ahead.
Kyp followed her, aware that one of the smaller Chadra-fan-- a child, from its size--was holding the hem of his cloak. He was admiring the view, dim as it was, when Jaina suddenly stopped and he nearly bowled her over.
"What?" he asked.
"You don't want to go in this next room," she said.
"Jaina, I want out of here. Can we just go, please?"
"Fine," she sighed. She pulled him through the curtain.
Kyp Durron fancied himself a brave man. After all, he'd done a lot of very brave things in his life.
But he hated spiders.
And this room was full of them. Including a very large, ugly one in the centre of the room, mandibles snapping ferociously.
Kyp felt a scream welling up inside him. Jaina's hand tightened on his and they moved at a near-run through the area, ducking as fake spiders on strings dropped down on them.
The Chadra-fan ran after them and Kyp felt something tugging at his cape all the way through the room. When they burst through the curtain at the other end of the spider room, frightened and gasping for breath, Kyp realized that the little aliens were now all trying to crowd together underneath his cape. The spiders had apparently scared them, too.
Jaina leaned her forehead against Kyp's shoulder. She slitted an eye and looked down at a knee-high Chadra-fan that had its short arms around Kyp's leg.
Then her head lifted. "I hear the park music!"
Kyp, moving with difficulty, stumbled towards the last curtain. They emerged, blinking, to the park. Beings of all descriptions moved past them, oblivious to the group's ordeal.
He looked up at the sky. Night had fallen, and the planet's two moons were rising.
He heard Jaina expel her breath as she watched the moons with him. "If you ever take me into one of those again, I'll kill you, Durron."
He chuckled. "It's hard to do that if I'm still holding one of your hands." Kyp froze as he felt Jaina slightly stiffen.
"Yeah. That might be kind of hard." Jaina was smiling shyly and she squeezed his hand. She glanced down at the Chadra-fan and blushed a lovely shade of pink. Kyp followed her gaze and saw that they were watching their exchange with little grins on their faces.
"Well," he said slowly, reluctant to find the rest of their party. "I guess we'd better go."
"Yeah." Jaina looked at their surroundings and her eyes widened. "Oh, the Kerris wheel!"
Kyp perked up a bit. "The line doesn't look too long . . . I'm sure finding your family can wait."
Jaina smiled. She waved to the departing Chadra-fan. "Bye!"
"You know," she mused. "That was more fun with you than with Jag."
He grinned down at her. "Really?"
"Yeah."
Kyp pulled her closer. "I'll have to keep that in mind . . . for next year."
"Don't you dare!"
"Coward."
"I hate you."
"I know."

And what it all comes down to is that I haven't got it figured out just yet.
Would I rather be feared or loved? Um... Easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.

Dana and April, that was GREAT
"Does the Goddess need someone to pamper her? To see to her needs? To see to her . . . every need?"
- - I absolutely LOVED that line, heee. I could so see Kyp saying that! And Jaina's reaction was perfect.

Simply horrifying! And I mean that as a compliment. I knew, I just knew that Kyp would lose his composure by the end. As soon as I read the title I knew it was gonna happen. In fact, before I clicked the link, I expected Kyp to be the one who was scared the whole way through. But I like this way better, and you also have managed to make it cute.

Okay, now I wish I had gone to that haunted house you were working at, Dana, to see if it bears any resemblance to this. Funny/cute, though.

Oops...sorry neither Dana or I replied to this yet, we've both been super busy.

Great job on this viggie.

Yay! Glad you liked it! Thanks for reading.

CrazyRodian:
I knew, I just knew that Kyp would lose his composure by the end. As soon as I read the title I knew it was gonna happen.

But I like this way better, and you also have managed to make it cute.

DarthIshtar:
LOL...well, I know I kinda used ideas from a haunted house Dana and I went through, where I was gripping her arm the entire time. I'm not sure about the ones she's worked at cause I've never been through them. I think one of them would give me lifelong nightmares!

Great post, Dantana! Lol, I had the same thought as Kyp, Jaina can handle the Vong, even Tsavong Lah, but not a little haunted house? Great work!
Dantana
and Mia
. Notice my lovely co-author over here?
I've been trying for ages to get her to post something.
Glad you liked.

Dana and Mia, that was GREAT
Thanks.
"Does the Goddess need someone to pamper her? To see to her needs? To see to her . . . every need?" - - I absolutely LOVED that line, heee. I could so see Kyp saying that! And Jaina's reaction was perfect.
Heh heh heh heh! And it wasn't me who came up with that one!
Sometimes K/J pre-mush is almost (I did say almost) as good as real mush
Well, as this is part of a much larger story, there will be
real
mush following.
Loved it loved it!
Thanks.
Hah Hah Hah Hah

Simply horrifying! And I mean that as a compliment. I knew, I just knew that Kyp would lose his composure by the end. As soon as I read the title I knew it was gonna happen. In fact, before I clicked the link, I expected Kyp to be the one who was scared the whole way through. But I like this way better, and you also have managed to make it cute.
Actually, the "Coward" was Jaina, and we designed it that way (had to have her clinging to Kyp, after all.
) The thing with the spiders was an, "Oh, yeah, that's in the challenge, too, huh?" moment, lol.
Glad you liked.

Okay, now I wish I had gone to that haunted house you were working at, Dana, to see if it bears any resemblance to this. Funny/cute, though.
No, that one bears no resemblance. This was based on two of the ones at Lagoon. Thanks.

LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks.
"I hate you."
"I know." Kyp grinned.
Best part EVER!
Well, this is part of a larger story we concocted, so there's going to be a bit more "I hate you"/"I know".
And real mush. And a lot of hilarity. We're co-authoring that, too, and I'm HOPING to have it up here in a reasonable amount of time.

Oh! Oh! More! Yes! Good!
For some reason, I prefer reading K/J fanfics, but in canon I prefer J/J.
