Note from the author : Liberation day is the equivalent of our holidays with presents, family gatherings, decoration, etc.

___________________________

For the first time in almost ten years, it was snowing on Coruscant on the night of Liberation Day. Every other year, it had been so cold that only the bravest had venture outside for more than five minutes. Tonight, though, the weather was fair, cool yet not uncomfortable. It was also snowing, a fact that added a touch of magic to the special night that awaited his family.

It was Liberation Day, and now that the official ceremonies of the government were over to commemorate all the heroes that had given their lives to the long-gone fight, even the Skywalker family was gathering for the more intimate part of the celebration.

For Luke, it was even more special that his parents were the ones holding the family reunion this year.

Twenty years ago, he and Leia had been all alone in the galaxy, both of their parents either dead, believed to be dead, or serving the enemy, yet there they were, preparing to spend a family-oriented celebration with their parents and own children.

‘Who would have thought,’ the Jedi Master/professional trader reflected as he gazed wistfully at his playful children.

Certainly not him.

He had especially never foreseen such possible future when he and his father had not only failed to destroy the Emperor, but that the other had also revealed to them that his mother was alive and that her continued well-being were now in their hands.

At that time, he and Anakin had surrendered without a fight.

In the end, though, it had served them better since they would have never gained the necessary close access to him if his father had not managed to trick the despot and regain his favor after a while. Of course, those were months of their lives that neither wanted to talk about anymore, but they had still brought about the end of the tyrannical Empire.

It had also brought about Mara’s cruel mission to kill ‘Luke Skywakler’, but, he shrugged again, that, too, in the end, had turned out more than all right.

Together, he and his father, then he and Mara, had overcome all the obstacles that the Emperor had tried to sow on their path toward their actual Happiness.

"Hurry up, Dad!" Dalen, his oldest son, urged him impatiently.

Luke exchanged a smirk with his beloved wife ; their ten-year-old boy was obviously more eager to open his gifts than he let on. Around them, their six-year-old twins ran after each other in the light snow while their youngest, baby Emmya, cooed happily against her father’s chest.

Indeed, Life couldn’t be better for the small Skywalker family.

In front of them, the lights of Anakin’s and Padme’s house shone brightly, a beacon of joy and serenity in the cool snowy night of Coruscant’s populated suburbs.

Even though they had parked their speeder a mere five meters behind them and were now walking toward the already opened door of his parents’ house, Luke felt as if they had been walking toward it for far longer... Or perhaps their journey toward this point in time had been long for them all. Except for the new generation of children, every other Skywalker had spent a good twenty years of his or her life alone from his/her kin, and suffering one way or another under the yoke of the Emperor.

But they were there, and that was what mattered the most. Luke cheered himself up at the thought of the gift that he and Leia had prepared for their father.

He couldn’t wait to give him back those twenty years that he missed in their lives, and more.

"Grandpa!" young voices exclaimed in joyous unison, pulling him out of his musings. The children had obviously reached the entrance of his parents’ house. "Grandma!"

"Hey, kids! How are you?" Anakin welcomed them enthusiastically.

Although the mask and respiratory systems had been gone even before they had confronted the Emperor, Luke still marveled at the miraculous healing that his father had received from the Force upon repenting for his wrong choices and vowing to make things right.

Nowadays, no trace of Vader were left in his father’s strong, healthy silhouette.

"We’ve been waiting for you," the older woman at his side bid them welcome ; she turned toward her son and daughter-in-law. "I hope there wasn’t too much traffic up there."

Luke kissed his mother’s cheek in greetings. "No, it was all right. Flying just a little bit faster than usual, that’s all." Even though his mother didn’t ask to hold the baby from this point onward, he understood her desire to have some time with the little one. He silently allowed her to pick the child from his arms and into her own arms.

Mara, who had already greeted Anakin, followed her mother-in-law, and children inside.

"Flying faster than usual, huh?" his father teased him as he greeted him in turn. "I bet it wasn’t a problem for you, right?"

"Not really, no," Luke admitted after he returned his father’s hug. "But I didn’t push it either. I wasn’t alone this time."

"And Mara would have maimed you before letting you show to the others what flying was all about."

"I would not," the beautiful red-head objected as they rejoined her inside the cozy family home. "I had to remind myself that I was with the children or else I would have taken the controls and taught those punks a lesson or two about safety rules." She finished to remove her winter parka.

Both men chuckled at the image of Luke and Mara fighting over the control to show off their flying abilities while accompanied by their children.

*I guess that’s why I didn’t push it,* Luke sent his father through the Force. He too removed his heavy parka that greatly reminded him of Hoth. Fortunately, though, he had never had to test the resemblance in temperatures similar to what he had endured while on the ice planet.

*And I bet that you two will find a way to settle this once you’ll be alone,* his father ribbed him, continuing their Force conversation.

As the two men chuckled once again in goon-natured amusement, and truth, the children and women penetrated inside the home proper.

Ooooooohs and aaaaahs informed them that the twins had spotted the gifts under the tree of Light. Han’s strong voice, followed by Dalen’s denial of what the other had just implied signaled the beginning of the family gathering.

Everyone had arrived, at last.

******

Later that evening, the family reunion had evolved exactly like Anakin had hoped it would.

While he and Padme had looked after everyone’s request for something to drink, or their hunger-incited questions, they had taken advantage of their children’s presence to create some new moments with them. While Luke had helped his mother with the final touches of the dinner, Anakin had talked with Leia and Han about their projects to move out back into the former palace now that their children were mostly grown up.

Although his relationship with Leia had been long to reach a point where the younger woman could trust him without second thoughts, what they now had more than made up for those long years of distance and regrets. Sometimes, he even felt as if he had more complicity with his daughter than with his son, at least in some aspects of their lives.

However, if he had a great relationship with his daughter, what she shared with Padme was indescribable. From the moment that the two women had been reunited, the once-little-girl had recovered her mother and hadn’t let go of her. The fact that they had both been involved in high-level politics also gave them several topics of conversations that neither could easily share with someone else without having to worry about the other’s integrity and trustworthiness. From pointless ceremonies to raising children and managing homey duties, the two women shared absolutely everything that was part of their lives.

They also included Mara in their female-outing as they called them, but sometimes, the trader did not identify at all with their ways of living and preferred to steal Luke away from a training practice instead of taking part to an activity with Padme and Leia.

Oh well, as long as neither women were sad by that turn of events, he himself was content. He could even understand why Mara would prefer solitude or action over hours of chit chat.

He was that way, too.

So was Luke, although from time to time, he did enjoy a long, deep talk over even a demanding work-out that made him feel in good shape afterward.

Anakin guessed that the boy took that from his mother’s skills with people and discussion.

Still, there was no doubt that his son and daughter, although both the same age and with a similar background as rebels, were completely different from one another. Luke was more like himself while Leia was more like her mother.

Yet the girl had ‘his’ anger, and Luke’s had his mother’s compassion. Personally, he paid close attention to his daughter’s temper, intervening whenever he felt as if she began to give just a tad too much and too often into it. At first, she had greatly resented his warnings, getting angrier than she already was ; with time, however, she had begun to understand the point of his intervention and had accepted them as a sign that he cared very much about her.

That was when they had improved their relationship, in fact.

Focusing back on the present moment, he noticed that the children had grown completely unable to wait for their gifts anymore and had convinced their grandmother to start the unwrapping.

Aware that moments as those that he were experiencing were gifts in themselves, Anakin made a careful visual record of all the delighted expressions that he saw on his family’s faces, all the feelings of Love and affection that permeated the

Force of the room where they were, and all the warm gazes that people exchanged between themselves as they thanked each other for the others’ presents.

Then, it was his turn to receive a package.

It was from his two children.

"In fact, it’s for both mother and you," Luke offered from his seat beside his wife, "but since she’ll need you to use it, you might as well unwrap it yourself."

Beside Anakin, Padme smiled softly at her children. "You shouldn’t have. We had said no gifts for us this year."

"It’s a home-made gift, so it doesn’t count," Luke retorted playfully.

Chuckling at his son’s ever present defiance whenever his mind was set on a goal, Anakin reassured his wife that this was why he too had prepared such gifts for them. He finally unwrapped the small box that he had felt the moment that he had held the gift in his hands, opened its lid, then tipped the box upside down to free its content into his hand.

It too was a box... but a very special box.

A rich burgundy, the holocron sat in the palm of his large hand. The moment that he reached out with the Force toward it, it began to glow. He withdrew as if shocked. Luke had made him an holocron?!

His son now had the knowledge to create such a device?

"It’s not a real holocron, but I managed to glean enough of the technology to create an interactive storage of both Leia’s and my memories."

Anakin gaped in silent stupor. His son had what?!

"Go ahead, think of a time of our lives that you’d like to see," Leia encouraged him.

Intrigued by the mysterious device, every one else had stopped its discussions or activities ; they were all enraptured by the device on apparent standby.

"Go ahead, Anakin, don’t be afraid," his gentle Padme encouraged him knowingly.

Although it had been years since he had left the darkness behind, he was still not at peace with himself about what he had done to his children or any other person. Thus, he was worried that if he asked about the time that he had been Vader, he would see images of how he had tormented either Luke or Leia.

"I erased anything that got through despite our willing avoidance of the bad events. It’s a happiness-filled record, so as to give you back the twenty-something years when we were all apart."

Greatly touched by his children’s consideration of his remaining grievances, Anakin shed a tear of gratitude. He then swallowed hard and said : "Luke, when he was eighteen years old."

Almost instantly, images of a brash-looking Luke materialized above the small cube and began to show him images of his races in Beggars’ Canyon, his time with his aunt and uncle, with Biggs, gazing at the stars and dreaming of becoming a pilot.

Padme smiled at the bittersweet images of the past. She called for images of Leia at fourteen years old. Luke’s images were replaced by those of Leia when she had become the youngest Senator ever, of how she had shared moments of precious friendship with Winter. They also saw Leia with her Timmin pets as they played in her flowing hair, then with her foster father studying the night sky and learning astrography.

Han whistled in admiration at the image of the beautiful young teenager. "Whoa, Princess, where was I at that time?"

"Thankfully far enough from her to keep her out of trouble until she was of age," Anakin playfully rebuked his ever-scoundrel son-in-law.

It was no secret to anyone that Han was Leia’s elder by nine years.

"Definitely better to have met her a while later, Solo," Mara cajoled the older man. "You wouldn’t have wanted trouble with Bail Organa anymore than with the law."

‘Or Vader,’ Anakin added inwardly. He shut down the already precious device. Thanks to the Force, his children had not only managed to register their memories in the device, but they had also done so as if they had been filming themselves instead of seen through their own eyes.

"There’s one more possibility, Father," Luke interrupted his gesture to put the cube away. The boy then activated it again and said : "Anakin and Padme."

To his everlasting amazement, images of his own past, as if filmed, too, sprung to life once again in front of his eyes. Belatedly, he understood that his wife had been involved in the preparation of his holocron. "You knew yet you played the game till now?" he inquired, turning his befuddled eyes toward her.

"I wouldn’t spoil your surprise for anything in the galaxy, dear Ani. Happy Liberation Day!"
