As of right now, I'm not planning on having Luke (who is alive, BTW - this isn't an AU) in this fic. This might change as I write, but at most he'll have a line or two at the very end.

I will update as soon as I can. Hopefully I can get it done by the end of this week.

Soon?

I'm working on it, honest! I'm (still) tweaking the timeline for this fic. The story itself only takes a week at the most, but the probable date for carbon freezing and Jacen's vacation is making my head spin.

My fault, probably, for taking loooong breaks between updates. Thanks for reading!

Fantastic idea for a story, lazykbys. I was a bit confused at first -- I misread the title bar and thought it was post-NJO and was wondering why Jacen needed a minder. tongue But once I figured that out, it all made sense. I'll keep an eye out for your next update. It'll be interesting to see how they react to this piece of news. thinking

Lazykbs, this story is fantastic! I found it, while I wandered through the Adoption Bunny Area, and I was rather stunned that anyone would be willing to write anything like this, so, out of curiosity, I decided to read it. I mean, it couldn't be that bad, could it?

tongue I was mistaken. Seriously! This is one of the most interesting stories I've found, and the writing is very smart. cool I'm very impressed. (and will subsequently follow this story religeously tongue )

First, I want to point out that if it weren't for dianethx's plot bunny, this fic would never have been conceived. That said -

Thank you! I was rather worried that some of the gimmicks (the M-word especially) might put people off. As for how they're going to react . . . he's a clone of a Jedi Master. How do you think they'll react? grin

Thank you! Pile on the praise! Inflate my ego till I explode! grin

But seriously, thank you for reading and I'm glad you like it so far. I can only hope I can keep the story from becoming dull.

. . . and, I almost have the next bit ready for posting. It should be up in an hour at the most.

A note on the continuity:
I checked Star Wars Timeline Gold and discovered that there's only a three-year period that I can stuff this story into, and no matter when it's going to be a tough fit. Maybe I should just slap an AU sticker on this fic and pretend I meant to do so all along.

BTW, the reference to Imperial forces retaking Coruscant is actually part of the official Star Wars continuity. I didn't make it up, honest!

Inspector Marland Boll of Coruscant Security was a human in his late sixties who looked like he might have been eighty and wasn't too happy about it. On confirming that Wedge was, in fact, the Wedge Antilles, his manner changed in a heartbeat from grumpy to almost hostile.

"What were you doing down there, anyway?" Boll asked Wedge for what seemed like the hundredth time.

"We were checking to make sure no-one was there," Wedge answered patiently. At least, he was trying to be patient. Boll's attitude was making it difficult.

Law enforcement officers on Coruscant, especially the older ones, usually had mixed feelings about the New Republic. For the most part, they welcomed a government that didn't think of them as their own private army. However, it had taken the New Republic five years to consolidate their claim on the world - in fact, for a time the planet had actually been recaptured by Imperial forces. In those five years Coruscant had experienced more unrest than any other planet in the galaxy. And to be totally honest, the years after that hadn't been entirely peaceful, either.

Quite a few Coruscanti blamed the New Republic for not ruling with an iron fist. Wedge couldn't bring himself to agree, but he understood where the sentiment came from and tried not to judge those who held it. However, there were times when he felt that someone who saw Wedge-the-Hero as an outlet for his pent-up frustrations was just a small-minded jerk.

Boll was not the biggest jerk Wedge had ever encountered, but it wasn't for lack of trying. "Oh? A hero of the New Republic and a Jedi, doing a job anyone with half a brain could do?"

"I owe Lando a few favors, okay?" Wedge said, letting some of his irritation enter his voice.

Boll gave him a look that radiated disbelief but remained silent. Then he muttered under his breath and glanced down at his datapad. "And while you were checking, you just happened to find someone frozen in carbonite."

"Yes. Look, I already told you everything. Don't you have something more important to do?"

"Of course I do," Boll snapped. "I need to be tracking down whoever froze that man. But it pays to keep asking questions, just in case. Now, are you sure Mr. Calrissian didn't tell you what to do if you found anything?"

"No," Wedge said firmly.

"Nothing? Not even if you found, say, some antique furniture?"

"No," Wedge repeated. Actually, Lando had told them to keep an eye out for things that may be of value because it would be a shame to feed such fine classics to construction droids who wouldn't know Alderaanian moss-paintings from the fuzz growing in the back of Wedge's refridgeration unit. But while it was only a joke - at least, Wedge thought Lando was just joking - it could be construed as greed or worse. "It's an abandoned building. Why should he expect to find anything?"

Boll's hmm clearly indicated he thought Wedge was lying. But he said, "I suppose you have a point. I'll have to cross-check the details, though, just to be absolutely certain. Now, exactly when did Mr. Calrissian approach you with this job?"

Wedge stifled a sigh. This was going to be a long day.

-----

Jacen sat beside the hospital bed with a datapad in his hand, composing a message to his uncle. He'd thought about calling on the hypercomm, but it didn't seem right to barge into his time like that. His uncle had a lot on his hands, after all.

How many Jedi does it take to solve the galaxy's problems? Just one, but the problems will have to take a number and get in line.

Jacen frowned at his joke. It wasn't as funny as he'd thought it would be. Actually, he didn't find it amusing at all. The reason was because it was too close to the truth.

His uncle - and almost every other adult Jacen knew - had spent the last quarter century risking their lives to keep the New Republic in one piece. They had sacrificed so much to make sure that normal, ordinary people could go about their normal, ordinary lives. They had gone above and beyond the call of duty so many times it had come to be expected of them.

It wasn't fair, really.

But when you had the ability to fix something and no-one else did, you had to fix it. If you didn't, the problem might grow bigger and bigger until no-one could, and then you'd feel bad that you didn't do anything when you had the chance. So you did, and they gave you a pat on the back and said "Well done," and you found yourself doing it again and again, and before you knew it they expected you to fix things, and you found yourself being thanked less and less, and you couldn't stop because you couldn't live with yourself if you did -

Jacen wondered what his aunt would have to say on the subject. Aunt Mara, who was as un-Jedi as you could possibly get. Aunt Mara, who refused to shoulder the weight of the galaxy without due compensation. Aunt Mara, who had once told Uncle Luke off for pampering the New Republic. If nothing else, her viewpoint would be a refreshing change.

"Jacen?"

He looked up, startled, and found himself being watched by the man - or clone, or whatever - that called himself Obi-Wan Kenobi. Although the man's blue eyes were seemingly focused on the wall behind his head, Jacen still got the impression "Obi-Wan" was looking straight at him.

"Somethin' wrong?" Obi-Wan asked, then grimaced at his slurred speech. It obviously frustrated him that he couldn't articulate his thoughts well.

"No!" Jacen said quickly. "It's just - I was thinking, that's all. About being a Jedi."

"A Jedi? Ah yes, I see."

Jacen longed to ask him about his experiences before becoming frozen in carbonite. However, Obi-Wan's memories were still confused from the long hibernation, and Dr. Mar'vys had advised against trying too hard to remember. "You can't push these things," she'd said.

Of course, things were complicated by his being a clone. It had been common during the later days of the Clone Wars to dump skills and memories of the original into the clones' minds using chemically induced hypnosis and electro-neural stimulation. This method, while effective, was known to wear off if the clone didn't exercise those synaptic pathways. It was quite possible Obi-Wan would never regain 100% of his - if indeed it was his - memory.

"Are you a pa - pa - are you a learner, Jacen?"

"Yes. Uncle Luke - I mean, Jedi Master Skywalker is teaching us."

"Luke Skywalker?" A frown appeared on his face as he repeated the name. "Anakin's . . . son?" His head shot up from his pillow as he sat up and gave Jacen a penetrating, if unfocused, stare. He demanded, "Wha' year is this? How long was I frozen?"

Too late, Jacen realized Obi-Wan hadn't been told of the events during his artificial sleep. He probably didn't know about the Empire or the Rebellion, not to mention what had happened to the Jedi Order. It also struck him that not only was everyone the clone had known dead, the fundamental structure of society had changed as well.

Jacen couldn't even start to comprehend what it felt like to lose the entire world in one blow. He didn't know how to break the bad news to Obi-Wan. But he was a Jedi, if only one in training. More to the point, he was here.

"Um, you might want to lie down for this . . ."

Um . . . actually, I'm thinking about skipping that part. It might be interesting to give a blow-by-blow account of the clone's reactions to Jacen's explanation, but I don't think I have the patience for it.
