*gets compfy*
I'm in...you hooked me.
A pleasant surprise this is! *snaps out of Yoda-speak*
What a great story! Very different from the norm and I'm enjoying it every step of the way. We didn't see Luke deal at all with the events in DE. It's nice to see him getting some help. Although this shrink needs a Xanax herself. *winks*
Absoltuely loved the Red/Gold reference. I also thought when Luke stopped short with, "M-" he was going to saw Mara. But alas...it was Master. *shudders* Interesting how both Mara and Luke have called Palpatine in one way, shape/form Master at one point.
Looking forward to an update. By chance are you sending PMs? If so, I'd love one.

RE: On the Couch - {post-Dark Empire, Luke & a psychiatrist.} Short Update 7/6! Sorry!
Not the greatest update ever, but it's an update. We're heading into darker and deeper territory, so Kessa's in a bit over her head at the moment ...
It's probably not the most professional practice in the galaxy, but I like to keep a supply of drinks in my office, just in case. Partly, mind you, because it tends to put the patient more at ease -- not that I recommend plying a patient with alcoholic beverages to loosen their tongue, of course, but some people seem to appreciate it.
The other part of the reason is that it tends to put
me
more at ease. It'd been a while since I was gripped with this sudden urge to ransack my own liquor cabinet during a session, but by now I was leaving "mild headache" country and approaching "killer migraine" territory at quicker-than-light speeds.
I don't usually embarrass myself this badly during the first appointment. Honestly.
But, really, I reserve the right to act like an idiot because, hey -- I haven't had a first appointment truly like this before, either. Stepping into the mind of the galaxy's greatest hero, seeing what makes him tick, what pushes his buttons, what makes him afraid or dangerous or both. It could be worth the migraine.
Or so I'd keep telling myself.
"Anyway," I said, attempting to regain my mental footing though I could feel the heat of several thousand suns beaming from my cheeks. "The Force."
"The Force," he nodded agreeably, still faintly smiling.
Damn. Where'd all my galactically commended psychiatric skill go? And my tongue. At this point, I'd be quite willing to settle for finding my tongue.
"Sorry, I'm a bit nervous," I admitted, sticking out my tongue. "It's ... well. A bit nerve-wracking."
"S'okay," he assured me with a laugh. "I'm nervous too."
I grinned, and he grinned back. Apparently, the thought of his psychiatrist being just as nervous as he was did a lot to calm his nerves after the word game, because the farmboy smile was back in a flash of white teeth that set my heart thudding a few times faster. Whoo-boy.
"So. What's the Force like?" I asked, once I'd gotten my hormones back under some semblance of control. "We hear about it all the time in the holos, what with you saving the galaxy all the time, but most of the galaxy's never had, well, a 'confirmed sighting'. Can you describe it? Just a bit?"
He bit his lip. "Um. Well." He waved his hand vaguely. "It's ... it's all around us. Everywhere. It ... connects us to one another, you see. Binds us, so that we're all interconnected at some level. It's the energy field that holds everything together."
"But what's it
like
?" I pressed. "I could have read all that in a textbook about obscure galactic religions. What does it mean, to be able to touch the Force?"
He smiled sheepishly. "I don't really know how to describe it," he admitted. "It ... it defies explanation, really. I've always felt it, at least on some level. It's like trying to explain sight to a blind person. How do you describe the beauty of a sunset to someone who can't see?" He shrugged. "I don't know. It's kind of hard to explain."
His smile was wistful and almost nostalgic, and even if I couldn't feel the Force, I could sense something of what it meant to him in that smile. "Is it something like sight, then?" I prompted. "Is it an extra sense that you have, something no one else can feel?"
"I suppose. But it's more than that, you know? It goes deeper."
"More spiritual?" I supplied.
"Yes. Partly. But -- I don't know." He grinned ruefully. "Sorry. I know I'm not being very helpful, but I don't really know what else I can say."
"Can you give me one word for it?"
His grin was dazzling. "Beautiful."
Subject: Luke Skywalker
Despite what others may think of his beliefs, the subject holds his Force in high regard, as the sacred bond between living beings. His singular devotion is positively endearing; a Force-blind atheist would believe his words, if only because of his smile and his charisma.
"How do you sense the Force, then?" I asked, taking a few notes. "Is it instinctive? Do you just
know
when something is about to happen, what other people are feeling?"
"Sometimes. But usually through concentration. Meditation. Consciously embracing the Force and ... well, I suppose 'listening' would be the best word, but that's not exactly it. 'Becoming aware,' I guess."
"So it's not instinctive, precisely. You have to train at it? Practice?"
"Yes. It's hard work, really. There's almost no limit to what the Force can do, but you have to be able to do it. To control it, direct it, let yourself be directed." He shrugged. "Saving the galaxy isn't as easy as they always make it out to be."
I laughed and jotted that down. "Must get you pretty tired out then, huh?" I asked teasingly. "Saving the galaxy all day, no time left for Luke to play."
He grinned. "Something like that."
I smiled back at him, hating how I was maneuvering the conversation back to less comfortable territory but not seeing a way around it. "But that's the lighter side of the Force, isn't it? What about -- "
"No, the other side isn't nearly as hard," he finished for me. "It's quicker and easier. More seductive, but not more powerful."
I smiled ruefully. "Am I really that transparent? Or are you reading me again?"
He had the grace to look mildly embarrassed. "Sorry. I've been expecting it from the beginning, that's all." He shrugged, and even that simple gesture looked like it had been imbued by some supernatural Jedi grace. "But yes, the other side's a lot easier."
"Is the dark the opposite of the light, then? Repulsive and repugnant where the other is beautiful?"
"No." He hesitated. "The Dark --" and I could hear the capitalization in the way he said it, making it somehow more real and more frightening than I'd expected, "--
is
beautiful. And that's what makes it terrible, because it's beautiful and horrifying and evil, but it feels so
good
. It's power in its purest form, and that's what makes it so addictive. Dark and evil, but all the more seductive because of it. So ... no, it's beautiful. As beautiful as the light, or more."
"But how do you know the good side from the bad?"
He frowned. "I used to know," he admitted slowly. Ashamed or embarrassed. "I'm not so sure anymore."
Subject: Luke Skywalker
We're touching on the subject of his fall, again. And despite his obvious distaste for the Dark side of the Force, his descriptions don't sound like they stem solely from repugnance. They call the Dark side 'seductive'; the subject's portrayal seems to give credit to that description.
To be blunt, I've heard spice addicts say similar things. That doesn't seem to bode well, but a final analysis will be postponed until the end of this session.

An update!
"Obscure galactic religions", indeed
"But how do you know the good side from the bad?"
He frowned. "I used to know," he admitted slowly. Ashamed or embarrassed. "I'm not so sure anymore."
Love this. Great insight into Luke's uncertainty. I'll be interested to see how he handles it when things get a little deeper and darker...

It's actually pretty neat to see things growing a bit more serious. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes from here.

Well, we can tell from her notes that her personal feelings are getting in the way of her professional judgement.

the psychiatrist is definitately crossing ethical lines here. Poor Luke - not good that he is unsure about the two sides of the Force now.

I loved Luke's description of the Force.
It's sad that he's so unsure at the end, and his feelings on the dark side are interesting...

Love that, Elli! I like how you don't water that down at all.
I really like Luke's descriptions of the Force overall. Lovely job, darling.

An update? Yay!
An excellent post
vader_incarnate
. Now we're getting into rough, uncharted territory for Luke Skywalker. It'll be interesting to see how this progresses. Luke's description of the Force, especially the Dark Side, was chilling.
"But how do you know the good side from the bad?"
He frowned. "I used to know," he admitted slowly. Ashamed or embarrassed. "I'm not so sure anymore."
Oh goodness. Poor Luke...he'll find his way though. The journey to get there though is what makes for great stories.

EEEEEEEEEEE!!!! *explosion of squees*
Elli, I glompeth thee.
I don't need to be a Jedi myself to agree with your take on the Dark Side--giving in to your aggression can be the most wonderful feeling in the world, especially when it's being focused on somebody who deserves it.
