“The old Jedi Order was not perfect,” Luke said bluntly. “And neither are we. What mistakes will new generations see in us? Will they judge us?” He paused. “I think they will.” --- “I don’t know. I wonder about my destiny, Dad. If I hear the darkness call, is it for a reason?”
I love these lines, so profound.
Awesome viggie.

RE: A Symbol, Perhaps (ROTS spoilers, Luke & Ben Skywalker vignette)
Once again, another outstanding fic! Bravo! I really can't wait until the post-NJO profics come out. I really look forward to seeing Luke and Mara interact with young Ben. I just hope the profic portrayal of them is as good as yours. Heck I would settle for half as good as yours.
“If you could change it all, would you?” Ben asked, meeting his father’s eyes, exactly like his own. “Would you stop your father from turning at the moment he fell, would you try to save the old Jedi Order?”
Luke looked at him for a long, awkward moment, utterly taken aback. “Yes,” he breathed at last.
“Then all this would be gone,” Ben said quietly. “Mother. Me.”
No, no, no. I can't believe you had Farmboy say that! But then again Luke saw first hand what happened to Alderaan. I guess it is like our Farmboy to sacrifice all that is dear in his life if he could stop the slaughter of billions.
This part just touched me. I often thought about what things would be like if I could go back in time and change things. Could I have saved my friends and family members who have died young? And if I could, what changes would that bring to me? As you get older you are more apt to say "No, I wouldn't change things." Mainly because you now can see how those events altered your life. And if you are now in a good place, you would not want to change things.
I am rambling. Excellent story. You are a brilliant writer!

You have no idea how many times I had to edit this reply before posting. Something about this subject just makes me spout theories endlessly! I had to pare it down in the name of time conservation.
Destiny is a topic I find insanely interesting, so I’m excited you wrote something on it. I never have been able to completely reconcile my ideas on free will and life purposes. On one hand, I’m a big believer in free will—God gave it to us, and I don’t think we’re all just puppets dancing for his enjoyment. But is there something—even just one thing in all of the years of your life—that you are meant to do? Some role you are meant to fulfill?
It just makes my head spin. Nice work on fitting it all into a little viggie.
And I like that you haven’t tried to force any neatly wrapped answers on us, because there aren’t any.
“The old Jedi Order was not perfect,” Luke said bluntly. “And neither are we. What mistakes will new generations see in us? Will they judge us?” He paused. “I think they will.”
Definitely. That’s what you
should
do with history. But...when have we done that? Or rather, when have we acted upon it? Even some of the clearest lessons of our past have been ignored. After the Holocaust, we swore never again, and yet we abandoned Rwanda. Today we turn our backs on the Sudan.
It’s sickening.
"If I hear the darkness call, is it for a reason?"
TF.N does not provide a face for what I am feeling.
“It is always a choice to turn. The Force moves within those choices, using them so the light always shines again, but it is choice that can bring darkness.”
And a fabulous reply from Luke.
lurker2209
had an analysis I particularly liked:
But on the personal side, I don't think the possibily of righting the future is ever an excuse for following a dark path. And that's what Luke really conveys to Ben, despite the fact that he doesn't have a satisfactory response to all the abstract questions.
So yay for her, too.
Though in his father’s embrace he could not see it, Ben sensed his father open his eyes and stare at the stilled face of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
*is silent* Excellent, excellent detail.
It makes me a little shivery.
Terrific as usual,
oba
.
It’s really quite disgusting.
I think I can find it in my heart to forgive you, though.

Neo-Paladin
: LOL.
Thank you.
Well, I don't like Lucas's mythology.
I don't think the dye was cast. I see her death as being a culmination of events, not absolutely fated ... But, ah well. I think I just see it differently than you (and perhaps Lucas, but would that be the first time for a fanficcer?
).
_Jedi_of_Destiny_
: That's Mara.
I don't think it was a selfish desire on Luke's part, at least not entirely - he would lose as much as he gained, and it would be uncertain what he would gain anyway. But I don't think he could help reaching out for something better, for everyone.
Thank you.

, thank you.
Healer_Leona

academygrad88
: Thank you!
I think I actually fear the post-NJO pro stuff - you know, fear for Luke's life.
But thank you.
Yeah, I think for Luke, he's always had this hope that there is something better, that he can help make things better. Even at great cost to himself. I guess I feel like for him it's always reaching out for hope, whereas Ben is being more like his mother, pessimistic.
I'm not that old yet, but I've talked with my mother a lot on this subject - I think she'd agree with you.
Thanks again.
Leia
: LOL.
Yes, yes, don't daunt me.
I also believe God gave us free will, and I actually think that, sort of like what Luke says in this, that he uses our choices - they
are
our choices, and yet, he knows them before we make them. But that's God for you. Confusing.
A lot of the time when I write, I'm doing it to clear things up in my head. The characters arguing is sort of like me arguing with myself. I don't think anyone won this round.
I never completely got my 'answer'. But as Neo-Paladin said, that's why they're hard questions.
I think the world at large fails to learn from the lessons of history, unfortunately.
It's not just America ignoring those things, and not just those things being ignored. It
is
sad. And horrifying.
I'm glad you liked that last line.
That's entirely the reaction I was going for. It
is
a bit chilling, considering what Obi-Wan goes through and what he does - and, as he says, his failure.
I'm glad to be forgiven, too.
(
) Thank you.

Tear..
Those were hard questions that Ben asked Luke--very hard ones.
The fact that Luke still would try and save the old order is astounding and a little hard to wrap my head around..
The dialogue was very well pieced together--
the image and where the image took place--haunting.
shiver--that movie was haunting..
After 4x I still can't believe how good it is...
awesome job with the story oboana

: They are hard questions. As much as I tried to have Luke answer them, I really couldn't. Probably because in some sense this questions are real ones, ones that people face in certain ways ... I'm glad you liked the dialogue and how the scene was set up. It was really important to me to make that connection, because it seems so hugely important to me after RotS, Anakin Skywalker's fall, the entire relationship between him and Obi-Wan, and how that related to the fall of the Order.
Thank you.
