Chapter Eight
Kyp was sitting in the chair beside Jaina’s bed, his head resting on the mattress next to her side, one hand on her stomach and the other on her arm, when Han came in.
“Hey,” he put a hand on the younger man’s shoulder. Kyp’s eyes opened slowly, reluctantly, and he regarded Han with slight confusion. “Why don’t you go back to your room and get some sleep; I’ll stay here.”
Kyp shook his head heavily and rubbed his eyes. “I wasn’t sleeping.”
“You look exhausted.”
“I am,” he sat up, keeping his hand on Jaina’s stomach. “But I can’t leave; I promised Jaina that I would stay with her.”
Han sighed at the determination he saw in Kyp’s eyes and sank down into a chair on the other side of her bed. “Alright, fine. Why don’t you tell me where you found her while we wait for Leia and Cilghal to get here.”
Kyp grimaced. “Uh, yeah, sure. I found her deep in the unused section of the base, in one of the conference rooms. There was no heat and no lights; it was like walking into an ice cave on Hoth. Anyway, I found Jaina in there, on the floor, and she told me that she had been unconscious for the past two hours that I had been looking for her. I knew something was wrong because her body wasn’t retaining heat; the baby is dying.”
Han took the blow surprisingly well. “What did you do? What are we doing to save it?”
“I told her to go into a healing trance until the medics arrived and we lay down on the floor; I knew we needed to stay as close as possible to conserve heat and energy. I did as much as I could to heal the baby while we waited.”
Han nodded solemnly. “Thanks; why don’t you leave the two of us alone for a few minutes. Don’t worry; I doubt she’ll wake up before you come back. I just want to be alone with my daughter for a little while.”
Kyp hesitated, as though he didn’t know how to phrase what needed to be said. “No, I can’t leave.”
Han frowned, ready to get angry. “Why not? I’m her father and I’m telling you to leave for a few minutes.”
He stared at Han, unfazed by the older man’s burst of emotion. “You don’t understand; I’m keeping the baby alive right now. If I lose physical contact, they’ll both die.”
Han regarded him dubiously, and Kyp sighed. “You want me to show you?” He removed his hand from Jaina’s stomach and sat back in his seat. The moment his hands left her body, the machines around her went crazy; her heart rate shot up along with her temperature, and the baby’s life signs dropped steadily. He leaned quickly forward and replaced his hand on her stomach, closing his eyes in concentration. A moment later all the machines returned to normal. He opened his eyes to see Han staring at him in amazement.
“How are you doing that?”
Kyp smiled slightly. “It’s not easy, I’ll tell ya that. I don’t know, really. For some reason, my presence inside her body is the only thing keeping it stable. Maybe Cilghal can explain when she gets here.”
Han looked uneasy. “Can I help?”
“You can get me some caf; I don’t want to know what’ll happen if I fall asleep.”
He nodded, getting up to go to the mess hall. “You look exhausted.”
“I already told you that I was. I’ve been doing this for almost two hours now, not to mention this morning when you found us.”
Han left, closing the door behind him.
As soon as the lock clicked shut, Jaina’s eyes fluttered open. “Kyp?”
“Yeah, I’m here.” He put his free hand over hers. “I told you I would be here.”
Her voice was still very quiet and subdued. “How’s the baby doing?”
He grimaced. “Okay, I think. I’m doing everything that I can, but it’s getting harder. I’m trying to keep both of you alive and this, whatever it is, keeps intensifying its attacks on the baby.”
A few tears slipped from her eyes and he leaned down to kiss her forehead, then brushed the hair gently from her face. “Don’t worry Jaya, I’ll save the baby; I promise. Go back to sleep; your body needs all the energy it can get right now.”
She shook her head and a little of the natural defiance returned to her eyes. “No, I want to speak to my parents. My dad is here, isn’t he?”
Kyp nodded. “Yeah, he’ll be back in a few minutes. So will your mother and Cilghal.”
Jaina smiled. “Good. But Cilghal won’t be able to help.”
Kyp frowned. “Of course she will; she’s a healer. Maybe she can take over for me for a little while; I need to at least go into a trance to regenerate my energy.”
Jaina shook her head and her voice came out confident and strong. “You’re the only one that can do this; I know you are. Cilghal won’t be able to do anything; my body will only respond to you, to your presence. I don’t know why, but I’m confident that if you leave, both the baby and I will die.” Her eyes searched his face. “Promise me you won’t leave, Kyp. I know that she can’t help; she doesn’t even need to come. Please, don’t let her do anything; she can only make things worse.”
He sighed; it sounded doubtful, but he had to trust her. “Alright, I won’t let her try. But if I’m the only one that can do this, then you’re going to have to help me. I’m not going to be able to keep up my strength forever; I’ll have to rest sometime.”
She closed her eyes. “I know. That’s why we have to figure out what’s wrong before then, so we can destroy it. Once it’s gone, I’ll be fine, and so will the baby. I’m guessing we don’t have a lot of time?”
He squeezed her hand and shook his head, speaking softly. “No, we don’t.”

jag isn't already in hot water? and kyp's in some major trouble. cause by the sounds of it, he's keeping himself, the baby and jaina alive, three life forces and only like 1.5 energy sources, if kyp keeps this up he's not going to be much better off that jaina messa thinks. I hope something comes to mind soon.

Very interesting! I'm curious as to what the illness, disease, or other contributing factor to the danger of Jaina and the baby is. Jag in trouble? I would think so since he just ran off and didn't help Jaina at all!  Deserves what he gets! Hope Kyp can help heal Jaina and get some rest soon! Can't wait for the next post!

Hey! I missed the last two posts! They were great. I hope Jaina and her babies get better soon. Kyp can't help them forever. And, is it babies or baby? It's been almost a month since the last post. What's up? Any idea on when the next one will be up? I will be waiting patiently.
