Chapter 4
Fear for the Future

“Mom, do you think everything is really going to be all right on Hapes?” Ben Skywalker asked, standing beside his mother.

Mara looked up as snow continued to fall on Csilla. “Jacen has proven that he’s more than capable of taking care of himself,” she pointed out.

Ben bent down, taking a bit of fresh snow and rubbing it between his fingers. “I know that - he’s my master, after all - but...”

“You sense something, Ben?” Mara stopped walking, her gaze now fixed on her son.

“Maybe,” he said cautiously.

“Ben, if you think you know something, please, tell me?”

“I’m not really sure I know anything, Mom,” Ben explained.

“You suspect something though; I can see it in your eyes,” Mara said pointedly, looking Ben straight in the eye.

Ben stood up, looking away from Mara. “I don’t think this is about Anakin, Mom. It doesn’t feel right.”

Mara brushed some newly fallen snow from her shoulders. “There’s more to it than that.”

“Mom.” Ben protested.

“I can sense you’re holding something back, Ben. Whatever it is, you can tell me,” urged Mara.

“But I can’t,” Ben burst out, frustration rolling off him in waves through the Force.

Mara’s arms folded over her chest, and her expression grew stern. “And why not, exactly?” Ben didn’t respond. “Ben, if it’s bothering you this much, it’s obviously important. You can’t risk Anakin’s life just because something makes you uncomfortable,” she chided.

“This isn’t about Anakin,” he said firmly.

“No?” Mara quirked a red eyebrow.

“Not exactly,” Ben amended.

“Ben,” Mara said impatiently.

“There’s a lot you don’t know, Mom. A lot you just wouldn’t understand,” Ben admitted quietly.

“About Anakin?”

“About a lot of things,” Ben replied cryptically.

“Ben Skywalker, if you know something about this plot Tenel Ka’s spies uncovered you have to tell me. And I mean right now.”

“Because you’re my mother?” Ben asked in a snide tone.

“Actually, no.”

Ben faced his mother. “Then wh...”

“Because,” Mara interrupted, “you are a Jedi apprentice now. I am asking you not as your mother but as a Jedi master to explain what you know about a plot to assassinate a fellow Jedi knight.” Her tone brooked no argument.

“You can’t be serious?” Ben gasped.

“Can’t I?” Mara challenged. “Jedi are to put the order above even family, and since you don’t seem to care what happens to your cousin, that’s what I am ordering you to do: put the Jedi first.”

“That’s not fair!”

“I’ll be sure to raise your objection at the next council meeting,” Mara replied dryly. “Now, out with it, Padawan Skywalker.”

Ben hesitated for a fraction of a second. Then, with a weary sigh, he did as ordered. “I think my friends are involved.”

“Your friends?” Mara echoed.

“Gorog, Mom,” Ben elaborated.

Mara felt a cold shiver run down her spine. “I was under the impression that that nest died out or was assimilated into other nests after Lomi Plo was killed.”

Ben shrugged noncommittally. “Maybe you’re right.”

“But you don’t believe so, do you, Ben?” Mara challenged. Ben looked down at the snow covered ground and frowned. “Ben?”

“It’s just a feeling,” he insisted.

Mara’s face filled with worry. With the deaths of Lomi and Welk, and the assumed death of Alema Rar, Ben was the last Force-strong joiner to the Dark Nest. And what was worse, Ben was among the strongest Force-users in the galaxy. Combined, these factors made her son’s belief that the Gorog Killiks were involved in the events transpiring on Hapes more than valid. It was, to say the least, unsettling.

Jacen stood, hands clasped behind his back, looking out over the gardens of the Fountain Palace. Tenel Ka’s simple stone balcony boasted a very impressive view, but that did little to brighten Jacen’s mood. According to Dukat Gray, Lumiya’s forces had been attacking Hapan vessels for weeks now. It was a realization that made the eldest Solo brother extremely uncomfortable.

He had dealt with the Sith in the past, but that had been a different time. His circumstances had changed drastically since he’d first encountered Lumiya. His life was much more complicated now, though in the best way possible. He had Tenel Ka, and, of course, his beloved Allana.

His child was the most important thing in his life, and he would not allow the Sith anywhere near her. Lumiya had been a resource; a valuable ally, but that had been then. Now, he had no further use for his grandfather’s former apprentice. He had his own plans, and they didn’t include the Sith, or their games.

“You seem troubled,” Tenel Ka observed, stepping onto her balcony.

“It’s nothing,” he assured her.

“I doubt that,” Tenel Ka fired back. “There has been something troubling you all day; I can sense it.”

Jacen sighed. “It’s just your grandmother’s disappearance has me worried, that’s all,” he lied. “She went after Allana once, after all.”

“Fact. However, that was some years ago, and well before she was stricken with her...ailment.”

If Jacen cared about Tenel Ka’s mention of his past action against her grandmother, he didn’t allow it to show. “The galaxy is changing,” he said out of the blue.

“The future is always in motion,” Tenel Ka quoted the Jedi maxim.

Jacen chuckled ruefully. “You might be surprised in that regard,” he returned.

One of the queen’s eyebrows arched. “More flow-walking?” she speculated.

“There’s no need for that just yet,” Jacen responded, more serious now.

“You’ve seen something?”

“A grand new future for the galaxy at risk,” he answered cryptically.

Tenel Ka stepped closer to Jacen. “What kind of ‘grand new future’, and why is it at risk?”

Jacen faced his love, placing his hands on her shoulders. “I have to leave for a few days.”

“Leave? Why, and where will you go?” Tenel Ka was growing worried.

“I cannot say, but I must go. And I would like to take Allana with me,” Jacen told her firmly.

“Are you sure that is wise with everything that’s going on?”

“Do you trust me, Tenel Ka?” Jacen’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“You know that I do.”

“Then do not question my wisdom on this matter. I will return to you soon, and I promise no harm will come to our daughter,” Jacen vowed.

Tenel Ka could only nod her agreement. She didn’t like this turn of events, but she would trust Jacen. He was her love, the father of her child, and, by all accounts, a great Jedi knight. If anyone was to be trusted, it was Jacen Solo.

Chapter 5
Swarmed

“Thiz one does not like thiz, little brother,” Tesar hissed, his saber flashing in wide, defensive arcs.

Standing nearby, his own blade flashing brilliantly, Anakin found no cause to disagree. Gorog assassin bugs had swarmed the Pacifier’s bridge, throwing an already messy situation even further into chaos. Somehow, the shields protecting the main hangar bay had been lowered, allowing Killik dartships to land in mass. There was a traitor in their midst, but there was no time to seek them out now.

Shatter gun pellets sped past his head, and Anakin winced as one nicked his left ear. Being boarded was bad, but being boarded by assassin bugs and their larger Gorog brethren just made it worse. Lightsabers weren’t much good against shatter gun pellets, and the thumb-sized assassins were fast, deadly, and, in Anakin’s opinion, far too numerous.

Blaster fired poured out from a nearby hallway, and Tesar and Anakin watched as Wyn Fel stepped into view. She was leading a cadre of black and red-clad CEDF officers, their blaster fire forcing a small band of Killiks to retreat. It was a small victory, and one neither Jedi was certain would mean much in the final outcome.

“How bad?” Anakin called out to Wyn, his blade cutting through the thorax of a blue-black killik.

“The bridge, engineering, the main hangar bay, and a six other sections of the ship are theirs,” she yelled back, still firing her blaster pistol.

“Great,” Anakin grumbled.

“The battle iz lost?” Tesar sounded surprised. A trident wielding Killik approached the Barabel from behind, but a swift swing of Tesar’s powerful tail crushed it against the nearby wall.

“Let’s just say it isn’t won,” Anakin replied dryly, beheading one Killik before driving his blade through the thorax of another.

“Follow us to the capture bay,” Wyn instructed the two Jedi as the Chiss officer beside her fell to his knees, screaming as assassin bugs spread quickly over his body.

Anakin and Tesar nodded, then started to fight their way towards Wyn and her band. Briefly, Anakin reached out for Jorallen, wondering where the elder Jedi was in the midst of this disaster in the making. A moment later, Anakin felt Jorallen reply. To Anakin’s relief, Jorallen seemed to already be in the capture bay. At least that was one less thing to worry about, he thought, diving away from a barrage of shatter gun fire.

“Close the blast doors,” Wyn Fel ordered once all the Pacifier’s survivors were inside the capture bay.

“Thiz iz all thatz left?” Tesar rasped, looking around the bay.

Wyn’s gaze followed the Barabel’s around the bay, noting the incredibly few members of her crew who were present. “Yes,” she replied grimly.

Jorallen stepped beside Tesar. “There are others left alive, but we’d never be able to save them, not before we were cut down,” he said in a solemn tone.

Standing off by himself, Anakin winced. “They’re being butchered; I can feel it” he stated, tucking his arms into the sleeves of his robe.

“We all can,” Jorallen remarked. “Much as we want to, though, we can’t save them. If we tried, we’d just end up getting everyone killed,” he added logically.

“I know - I fought in a war, too,” Anakin snapped.

Jorallen lowered his head. “My apologies, Anakin. I didn’t mean to sound superior.”

Anakin accepted the apology with a nod, his eyes downcast.

“We need to get everyone loaded onto the ships,” Wyn interjected pragmatically. “We can’t do anything more here.”

“It’z good that you used thiz space for extra ships instead of leaving it empty,” Tesar noted approvingly.

Wyn nodded. “CEDF command didn’t believe we’d have cause to capture any ships on this mission, and it seemed prudent to use the space since it was available.”

“Hunting on a full belly,” said Tesar.

“Something like that,” Wyn agreed. She faced the nearly three dozen Chiss crew inside the hangar. “Everyone, load up. And do it quick. I don’t think those bugs are just going to let us sit here for very long, not when they control the ship.”

As the Chiss loaded into the various fighters and shuttles located in the hangar bay, Jorallen approached Anakin. Something was bothering the young Jedi, something more than just the Dark Nest’s unexpected return and assault.

“What is it, Anakin?” Jorallen queried gently.

“We were betrayed; you know that,” replied Anakin, looking deep in thought.

Jorallen nodded. “Someone lowered the shields, allowing us to be boarded.”

“Yes.”

“You know who it was?” Jorallen asked.

“After what the Jedi did to end the Swarm War, the Killiks shouldn’t be doing things like this, especially the Dark Nest,” Anakin said evasively.

“Anakin,” Jorallen prompted.

“I sensed something in their collective mind... something familiar.”

“How so?”

Anakin frowned. “It wasn’t exactly something,” he amended. “It-it was someone.” Anakin’s reluctance to say more was written all over his face.

“We need to go,” Wyn called, standing on the boarding ramp of one of the Star Destroyer’s many shuttles.

Anakin started for the nearest shuttle, and Jorallen raced to catch up.

“You were saying?” the older knight pressed.

“Not now, Jorallen,” Anakin said firmly. “This isn’t over yet. If those Killiks know or figure out how to operate this ship, we’re going to have a hell of a time getting away from here in one piece.” With that, Anakin boarded a shuttle, quickly taking over as its pilot.

Jorallen watched Anakin board his shuttle, a frown on his bearded face. Anakin knew something, something very important. That much was now very clear to him, but what was it? Whatever it was, Jorallen was gravely concerned by Anakin’s reaction. Sighing, he made his way towards a shuttle, trying to focus on the task at hand. Anakin was right when he said they had more important things to deal with at the moment, and so his questions would just have to wait, for now.

Nice interplay... Jorallen being the professional Jedi, Anakin... bein Anakin; Tesar liking the Chiss pragmatism, Wyn living and breating it...

Funny how Jorallen and Wyn seem worlds apart in that range of characters.

And characters is what it really is... a group of people standing in a corridor, having a calm chat while the battle rages through the bulkhead. Nicely done - great "mood lighting" on character and situation...

Chapter 6
A Favor and a Revelation

Leia’s small personal starship, the Alderaan glided into the main hangar bay of the Mon Calamari cruiser Tradewyn, flagship of the Bornaryn Trading Company fleet. Waiting to greet Leia at the bottom of her ship’s boarding ramp was none other than Raynar Thul.

Leia exited her ship, the Noghri Cakhmaim and Meewalh, trailing behind her. When she caught sight of Raynar’s scarred visage, she smiled warmly. It was good, she thought, to see Raynar back among his family and friends. Though forever changed by his time with the Killiks, he was, slowly, reclaiming his old life.

“Greetings, Princess,” he bowed. He looked past Leia as if expecting to find someone else standing there. “You and your guards are alone?” He sounded confused.

“Ta’a Chume has been safely tucked away for the time being. I have two men I trust keeping a close watch on her, in case she should try any of her usual tricks,” Leia explained.

“I see. And now, Princess, how is it I can be of use?”

Leia glanced around the busy hangar. “Perhaps we could discuss this somewhere less public?”

“Of course,” Raynar agreed. “My apologies for not sensing the need for privacy earlier. Without the Colony to assist me, my Force perception is not what it once was. I am having to reacquaint myself with my original talents, and it is taking some time.”

Leia smiled kindly. “I’m just glad you have the chance to reclaim your past.”

Raynar’s expression became unreadable. “Yes, I know it was not everyone’s first choice that I be given this opportunity,” he said bluntly.

Leia winced. “Perhaps, but all has worked out for the best.”

“Indeed. Now, if you will follow me?”

“My pleasure,” Leia replied, following Raynar out of the hangar.

The curving wall of transparisteel that made up three sides of the Tradewyn’s observation deck allowed Leia to view the trading fleet in full. It was, as her father might have remarked, most impressive.

“You’ve added more starfighters,” she remarked, eyeing the defensive screen of fighters in the distance. “Even at a glance, I can tell that much.”

“Piracy is rising to such a degree that not even our fleet is not safe anymore. Once upon a time our primary concern was being raided by mercenaries contracted to our competitors, but no longer. Now we are under a near constant state of alert, hence the additional fighter support,” Raynar explained.

“That’s unfortunate,” Leia frowned. “The Jedi are doing all they can, but there is so much that requires our attention.”

“True. But enough about my family’s business concerns, Princess. When you contacted me, you said I might be of some assistance to you. May I ask how, now that we are alone?”

Leia clasped her hands behind her back. “I was hoping I might convince you to use some of your family’s many agents to investigate a small matter on my behalf.”

Raynar’s scarred brow rose marginally. “I would be happy to, Princess. But I must admit that that is a rather surprising request. Your family has numerous contacts, both in the public and private sectors, well suited to intelligence gathering. Which, of course, includes myself and my family’s company.”

“True enough,” Leia conceded. “But my feelings tell me that this is the most secure option available to me at present. And your network of agents is quite vast.”

“It is. Now, what exactly is it you would have me look into?”

“Over the past several weeks I’ve gotten the feeling that someone is prying into my family’s dealings.”

“I’m sorry, Princess, I’m not sure I understand,” admitted Raynar.

Leia sighed. “Truth be told, I’m not sure I do either. I’ve been having visions I can’t explain. At first I thought they were entirely random.”

“But now you believe otherwise?”

“Yes. I realized, later than I should have, that everything I’ve seen is connected to my family in one way or another.”

“How so?” Raynar stepped closer to Leia.

“I’ve seen flashes of my family, the Noghri, my father’s residences on Vjun and Coruscant, the Alderaan, the Naberrie estate on Naboo, Malinza Thanas on Bakura, even Bright Tree village on Endor. But nothing in my visions directly ties them together.”

“Except your family itself,” Raynar nodded. “Strange.”

“Very. My feelings tell me that someone is looking into all those things, but I can’t even guess at a reason.”

“It was the appearance of these visions that prompted your trip to Hapes?” theorized Raynar.

“I saw Jacen with Tenel Ka’s daughter, Allana.”

“Not unusual given Jacen and Tenel Ka’s long-standing friendship,” Raynar remarked evenly.

Leia cast Raynar a meaningful glance, but said nothing.

Raynar’s scarred brow rose high as realization slowly dawned. “I see,” he said slowly. “Well, that is quite the... development, isn’t it.”

“I should have seen it long ago.” The princess sounded sad and her eyes were downcast.

“You trusted your son,” Raynar reasoned soothingly.

Leia head snapped up, her expression bordering on anger. “I forgot the first rule of trust: It has to be earned,” she said bitterly, fire dancing in her brown eyes.

“That is true,” Raynar agreed. “I will see what our agents can discover,” he promised.

“Thank you, Raynar. I am grateful for your help,” said Leia. “I have a bad feeling that the assassination attempt I thwarted on Hapes was just the start of something bigger. There is something at work here I can’t put my finger on, and it’s making me uneasy.”

“I will help in any way I can. But now allow me to arrange for quarters for you, Princess. You’ve had a long journey, and I’m sure you and your guards could use a decent meal and rest.”

Leia smiled gratefully. “Thank you, I appreciate it,” she said as she watched Raynar walk away to make the arrangements for her brief stay aboard the Tradewyn.

COOL! grin

Things I like:

1.) Leia is a professional, a dirty little fighter when it comes down to it - daughter to both her parents, and very definately Jaina's mom, to boot, for all that she doesn't normally wear combat flightsuits...

2.) Raynar... is Raynar; and his time with the Killiks has matured him! Back in the day, he was a bright kid who wasn't terribly comfortable with his place in the Galaxy (interesting that he hit it off with Eryl, who had space in her blood like him... thinking ); but now, he's someone with the dignity - and quiet decisiveness - to command that armada of Star Cruisers and snubfighters... he's been UnuThul, and come back. Interesting parallels to Jacen, and maybe to Anakin as well...

And I like the way he "lifts his brow"! cool

More when I've had time to savour it! grin

And off we go...

1.) Leia is a professional, a dirty little fighter when it comes down to it - daughter to both her parents, and very definately Jaina's mom, to boot, for all that she doesn't normally wear combat flightsuits...

That’s Leia in a nutshell all right. She knows what she has to do, and she’s has the skill and the will to get it done. She’s not somone anyone should triffle with.

2.) Raynar... is Raynar; and his time with the Killiks has matured him! Back in the day, he was a bright kid who wasn't terribly comfortable with his place in the Galaxy (interesting that he hit it off with Eryl, who had space in her blood like him... ); but now, he's someone with the dignity - and quiet decisiveness - to command that armada of Star Cruisers and snubfighters... he's been UnuThul, and come back. *nods* He’s grown into the man he thought he already was back in his academy days. He’s all for the more commanding for his experiences, which is precisely why leia chose to go to him for help. wink

And I like the way he "lifts his brow"!

grin cool

More when I've had time to savour it!

I’ll be here when that happens. wink
