DARK DIPLOMACY

CHAPTER 1

(Seris primary sytem; Outer Rim)

“oooooooOOOOOOOO……(squeal of delight)”

“Again, again…do it again Daddy.”

Jag couldn’t wipe the smile off his face no matter how much discipline and structure had been ground into him. This was elation. This was joyous. This was…life.

He glanced at the reflection off the chronometer dial to his right on the cockpit dash. There was a pint sized helmet peeking over his full sized, polished black one. He could see the smile of his pride and joy uncontrolled and unbound anchored in the modified half-sized jump seat.

“How about a thrust climb with a barrel release sweetheart? He asked with the continued smile. He knew what her reply would be.

“Affirmative Colonel,” replied the voice of a three-year-old little girl trying to sound years beyond her age. The way she tried to lower the timber of her tone always made Jag laugh. This child was a carbon copy of his beloved wife right down to the brown locks.

Without a nanosecond’s delay the modified Claw Craft shot straight up. In a smooth imperceptible move the stars ahead twirled in a roll as the sleek vessel leveled off in the same original vector. Then without warning shot straight down towards the planet below. Tucking the drop, Jag proceeded to invert so that the outer rim world of Seris was displayed prominently above them and they proceeded on an opposite vector. Completing that, Jag braced for the reaction.

“Wooooooooooooooowwwww (another squeal)”

Jag couldn’t hold back. The chuckle reverbed in the open comm channel.

“Having fun kids?” an amused voice cut in.

Jag had no doubt that the voice was connected to a grin as wide as his own.

“You know us dear one, just working on our practice maneuvers.” Jag responded dryly.

“Yes, I do know you Colonel. And, I cannot recall practice maneuvers that involved unnecessary comm traffic.” The voice returned in an equally dry sarcasm.

Jagged grinned inwardly. She had him there. He enjoyed making the comparison between his introduction to the world outside of ‘Unknown Space’ and his current demeanor. Jaina had become his tutor in that regard, and he the willing student.

“I assume by your timely comm that the dinner hour has arrived?” Jag relayed.

“No, I have decided to continue the dinner hour to 18:00 hours. Instead, I will, personally, be performing a spot inspection on your abilities and aptitude.”

With that a white blur shot under the Claw Craft mere meters from the transparisteel bubble and slowed into the shape of a X-Wing just to the lead.

“Mommmmmy!” came the voice from the rear of the modified Claw Craft.

“Hi sweety. Is your father behaving himself?” Jaina intimated.

“I always behave myself dear one…when I am in public.” Another dry comment dripping with innuendo.

Blast that man. Try as she might, he knew which buttons disengaged the repulsors.

“Excuse me, Colonel. I believe I was addressing your co-pilot.”

Both Jag and Jaina noticed the joy the comment solicited in Mindrea. Jag caught the wide grin in the reflective chronometer. Jaina felt its accompanying emotion of glee in the Force.

“Co-pilot?” the awed little voice came back.

“Well, what would you call it little one? You are literally watching my back, and completing every tactic with me. For all intents and purposes, you are my trusted and deserved co-pilot. And, momentarily, your mother will be my dependable wing man.”

As the comment left his mouth Jag purposely focused his mind on an abrupt left turn, but instead increased the afterburner to shoot dead straight past the aft right of the X-Wing on instinct.

The desired result was textbook. The X-Wing took a perceptible veer to the left to block while the Claw Craft shot straight by on the right without consideration for its counterpart. He chuckled heartily in hearing the muffled expletive over the comm.

“Jagged Fel, you...(indistinguishable).” Came the strained comment as the X-Wing righted itself and worked to catch up with the faster more maneuverable Claw Craft. “If I didn’t know better I would say that someone has been a disreputable influence on you.”

“Not at all dear one.” The steady controlled voice came back. “That was your daughter wrestling the stick from me and exercising her own free will.”

“Daddy! I did not.”

Jaina smiled as she heard the deep chuckle of her husband. Mindrea had brought out a more playful side of him, and that just added to a long list of hidden treasures.

“Your Daddy is just being funny sweetheart. He is the only one simple minded enough to try and confuse a Jedi Master.”

“There is no try dear one…only do or do not.” Came the amused reply. “I would classify that as a ‘do.’ As my evaluation officer checking my abilities and aptitude, can I count on you for a fair and unbiased affirmation to that conclusion?”

“I will consider it. But, for now how about humoring this veteran pilot, your loving wife, and sharing the skies in a dance.”

“I would be honored to; once again, share evasive maneuvers with you my wife.” He intimated. “I lead.”

With that the Claw Craft shot a perfect loop straight up and back towards the charging X-Wing and settled closely so that the cockpits were meters apart and the vessels matched speed. Two helmets turned to each other, one white, and one black. The third, curiously half white and half black and remarkably smaller turned nanoseconds later. For the next standard hour the sky was alive with duo hair pin turns, thrust releases, twirling exercises and the resulting sounds of delight from the back of the Claw Craft.

This was their tandem release, their pure sharing of life. This was their dance. It was what had brought them together. For that very reason it was a sacred ritual between them, the three of them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Claw Craft and the X-Wing decreased their velocity and leveled their trajectory to line up with the aft portion of the ‘pleasure craft’ known as the Indigo Sky. Nearly, 100 meters cockpit to engines, the ‘pleasure craft’ was a spectacle. The size was impressive, but the sleek, stealthy shape was breathtaking. Not a sharp edge could be found from any angle. The struts spread out from a rather slim cockpit to an ever widening aft. Port and stern included retractable stabilizers to assist in atmospheric travel. The MonCal manufactured quad-engines would rival spoon ships in speed and efficiency.
In a ‘friendly’ mode there were no apparent teeth to the vessel. However, when the seamless armaments were activated, forward and aft torpedo banks stared down any threats. Two retractable, automated ion cannons graced top and bottom amidships. Concussion grenade banks matched each direction. And, 15 separate laser banks, automated or manual, could be fired from the cockpit by one or all of three separate stations covering the full circumference of the ship.
The shields were reinforced with six(6) separate stand-alone Chiss designed generators placed in the most structurally sound confines of the ship. As Han Solo had put it, the ship was a deceptive fortress that carried a precious cargo. He had given it the once over to assure that his daughter and granddaughter were in good hands. His most ardent challenge was keeping a smile off his face while taking the helm. He failed that effort when Jaina proudly informed him that the aft hanger/storage portion of the ship was large enough to accommodate visits by the Millennium Falcon without the necessity of an EV walk. Currently, the hold was set-up for three X-Wing XJ3s and a modified Claw Craft to be stowed.
As the fighters approached, the large docking/storage area slowly opened in tandem with a hailing call over the comm.
Greetings Fels, welcome to the Indigo Sky. Our specialties this evening are ground Ruzan with a lovely Borza sauce. It’s a bit tart, but I think it will do. We are offering a choice of sides in accompaniment. There is a rather nice Forsant weed sautéed in aged ale, or a more traditional Serba greens in a light brandy extract.”
“Uncle Sha, what’s Borza sauce?” came the diminutive voice back with obvious concern.
“Ah, my dear Mistress Mindrea, it is a combination of things that your Aunt Tahiri and I had the pleasure of scraping off the walls of the disposal units this afternoon. Cooked over time it has culminated into a wonderful, rich pulp. By your inquiry may I mark you down as interested?” the serious voice returned.
There was silence.
“Is that a yes little one?” said the same voice.
“What’s Symerra having?” came the serious reply.
“Ah, yes, Mistress Symerra has opted for a nice plate of our other specialty, Seris’ well known Ozna Stew with fresh baked bread sticks for easy dipping and a guaranteed messy table.” The formal voice offered.
“I’ll take that please.”
“Very well, I will alert the chef.” In the background just loud enough to travel out over the comm., the voice could be heard giving instructions. “…Yes, I assure you that is what I heard, Mistress Mindrea has opted for the Ground Ruzan with Borza sauce…”
“Uncle Sha!!!”
Sha chuckled and responded. “Fear not my little star fighter. Your Ozna Stew is awaiting your approval. Hurry up youngster, before it gets cold.”
The Indigo Sky was home away from home. Tahiri and Jaina had been teamed up to perform diplomatic missions on behalf of the Jedi. Sha and Jag had pulled their considerable resources and designed the ship as an anniversary present to their wives. Both of the Jedi had been excited about their assignments from Master Luke. However, the drawback would be the time they would have to spend away from their respective families. Jaina, particularly, was committed to remedying the situation as she drew upon the memories of her own childhood and how duties interfered with the time she got to spend with her parents at Mindrea’s age. Jag had watched the virtual tug of war within his wife and come to a resolution. Since she would be sharing her missions with Tahiri, also a new mother by adoption, he took his suggestion to Sha. From there the Indigo Sky went from thought, to plans, to fruition.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(4 Months Prior)

The remedy arrived on a midweek afternoon as Jaina was picking up Mindrea from the learning center on the grounds of the Jedi Educational Facility. Her comm unit chimed almost simultaneously with one immediately behind her. Absently, she turned while she answered only to see Tahiri answering her comm unit with a bemused face, and Symerra in tow. Their messages were remarkably similar. An unfamiliar, no nonsense voice simply stated.

“Your presence is required at Ossus Space Station hanger 45 ‘Able.’ Please be prompt.”

With that, the connection was ended.

Sha and Jag had secured a concealed view on the catwalk overlooking the hanger to enjoy what unfolded. Sha had taken the opportunity to shield them both in the Force as a precaution.

It did not take long for a speeder to arrive on site. They were surprised to see both their wives and daughters exit together. They had expected to see them arrive separately, but this was even better.

Without delay, a gangly flight coordinator waltzed out of the lower office and arrived with his datapad extended. Jag, although excited at the prospect of pulling one over of his wife, appeared calm and collected. However, his mimicking of the supposed conversation down below was a give-a-way to his internal demeanor.

“Sign right here and she is all yours. She is a beauty. I’ll bet she has got some real thrust. Yes, mam, I am sure of it.” He mimicked.

Sha joined in with a chuckle, both at the comment, and Jag’s formality transposed onto a grizzled flight coordinator.

“You call me ‘mam’ again and I’ll show you some thrust. What am I signing for?”

Jag again.

“Settle down lady. I am only performing my duty. The ship. It is the only thing in the hanger. I thought you knew.”

Sha’s turn. He turned to Jag and asked inquisitively.

“How do I portray a dumbfounded silence?”

Jag chuckled.

“No idea. Ah, our co-horts.”

With that, the hatch of the still unnamed ship opened with a hiss and the ramp started to extend from the interior. Out rolled two R-2 units in tandem. Sha smiled as he felt the instant recognition from Tahiri and Jaina concurrently. One was “Vale,” Jaina’s personal unit, and the other was the gift that Jag and she had given to Tahiri and Sha on their wedding day, “Conduit.”

Sha sensed the dawning of light in both of the Jedi as they started to realize what might be going on. They were aware that Jag and Sha were up to something over the last few months. However, they had never been able to put the pieces together. They just knew that their two husbands had spent an inordinate amount of time together.

Sha glanced over at the sinister smile forming on Jag’s face.

“Shall we my friend?”

“We shall my co-conspirator.” Jag said with a formal nod.

Jaina was running her one hand along the lines of the cockpit while keeping Mindrea in tow. Tahiri was moving away to take in the entire length of the mammoth vessel with Symerra gaping in a similar fashion. As they approached, Sha lowered the Force shield and startled all four of them. They turned in unison and the expressions were priceless. Sha glanced over to Jag as he did the same. Jag was first to speak.

“Hello ladies. Just browsing, or are you in the market?”

Jaina just stared as Mindrea made a direct line for her Daddy’s opening arms. Tahiri’s eyebrow raised and Sha guessed that she had come to a conclusion. Symerra laughed as she ran to Sha and jumped into his arms as she always did.

Jaina found her voice. “You didn’t?”

“We did.” Came Jag’s reply.

We did?” added Tahiri.

We most certainly did.” Responded Sha.

Jag took over with an explanation before Jaina had a chance to grasp it all.

“Dear wife. I will not. Hmmm. Let me start again. Dear wives, we will not (Sha nodded with approval) have you separated from your loving families while you are out saving the Galaxy. You see, we (Sha nodded again) consider ourselves a part of said Galaxy, and therefore, by simple deduction, we have an interest in it.”

Sha took over glancing to Jag who seemed quite proud of his efforts.

“Additionally, we have come to the conclusion that you, as well, are a part of the previously mentioned galaxy (Jag nodded his approval as if on cue) and we have a most definite interest in that also.”

Jag finished. “With the previous definitive logistical analysis, we have come to the reasonable conclusion that said galaxy, inclusive of its inhabitants, would best be served by us all.”

Sha nodded as Jag finished and fought to keep from laughing at the amusement on their wives faces. Tahiri started closing in on Jaina so that they were standing together. Sha and Jag stood silent without expression with their two daughters on either side holding their hands.

“This is ours?” Jaina seemed flabbergasted raising her hand to the massive craft.

“It is.” Answered Jag.

Tahiri looked to Sha. “All of ours?” Cringing at the grammar.

“It is.” Answered Sha with a smile.

“And, you will all be coming along with us?” Jaina asked while looking to Tahiri, and the girls and settling on Jag and Sha.

“Yes Love.” Jag removed the formality and aimed for her heart.

Sha just nodded slowly while keeping eye contact with Tahiri.

Jaina didn’t dawdle. She flung herself towards Jag and nearly knocked him over in her enthusiasm as she hugged her husband. Tahiri came forward to Sha a bit slower, but never losing eye contact as a smile dawned. She folded into him and he felt her body shaking against him. Two groups of three spent the next few minutes draped on each other imagining the possibilities and the memories that would be made together rather than apart.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Galley of the Indigo Sky was wafting with the delightful combination of fresh baked breads and the pungent Seris spices that accommodated the Ozna Stew. The girls, Mindrea and Symerra, had secured their usual places nearly on top of each other at the table, and a rather animated discussion of the day’s events was taking place in the three-year-old mindset.
The adults were busy finishing up in the open kitchenette and sporadically bringing dishes into the eating area. It was now routine and curiously enjoyable for all of them. Jaina, especially, found it amusing that three warriors and a spy were taking on the domestic part of life so naturally. She paused at the edge of the kitchenette and settled on watching the two little motor-mouths sharing their thoughts.
“They are interchangeable you know.” Came the voice from behind her.
Jaina glanced back to give Tahiri an affirming smile.
“Really, they are. I am quite sure that if one needs parts, you can take them right off the other and continue on your way.” Tahiri smiled as she admired the friendship that had developed between the litre sized ladies.
“I’m so glad they have each other. As much as I wanted my family with me on these missions, it would have been difficult for ‘Drea without her constant confidante and partner in crime.” Jaina mused.
“We are mutually indebted. All we need now is Sha to act his age and your husband can have a friend too.” Tahiri said in deadpan sarcasm.
“I think you give Jag more credit than he has earned. I’m quite sure your husband is teaching my husband how to confound my Force-sense. I doubt it was volunteered information.” Jaina added.
“Now this I have to hear.” An amused eyebrow lifted with the statement.
Jaina quickly related the earlier event where Jag placed a solid thought in his mind and acted on his instinctual flying to the direct contrary.
“Yes, that sounds like Sha’s doing alright.” Tahiri said with a bit of a bite.
What sounds like my doing?” Sha said innocently over their shoulders.
Both of the women jumped at the voice.
“Husband, I really wish you would not do that,” Tahiri stated with mock annoyance. “Can we not just tie a bell on you or something?”
Sha had spent a good portion of his adult life working for the Galactic Alliance Intelligence and had a propensity for sneaking up on people. It didn’t help the matter that he, also, had the ability to fully shut down his Force-sensitivity.
“Sorry dear.” He said with dripping sarcastic subservience as he quickly leaned over to place and sudden kiss on the side of her neck. “Get it while it’s hot kids.” He said in passing as Jag followed him to the table with the last of the bowls and a wink to his wife.
Jaina turned back to Tahiri and they shared a look of resignation with each other.
“I can only imagine what goes on around here when we are planet side.”
They both shared a laugh at that comment. However, it dropped off just a bit when they, simultaneously, started considering the vast potential of answers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Yavin Military Outpost)

“It appears to be a beacon of some sort, sir.”

“I am aware of what it appears to be Lieutenant. What I’m interested in is what it is.” Snapped the gruff voice on the holo.

“Yes sir, sorry sir. I have a Fang Squadron on it now. They will be making a pass in just under two standard minutes.”

“Very well Lieutenant. Give me a prelim sitrep when you have something concrete. Out.”

“What’s with the old man?” Came a jovial voice from behind Lt. Zerron.

“Couldn’t say Captain.” Responded the Lt. Zerron in a guarded fashion.

“Oh, quit it with the military backwash. I’ve known you for over ten years Vike. What’s with the General? It sounds like someone dinged the paint on his personal snub fighter.”

“I don’t think the General likes to lose sir.” Lt. Zerron said cryptically.

“Lose? What exactly has General Antilles lost?” Captain Borndon came back.

Lt. Zerron didn’t respond. Technically, he shouldn’t have the information that he did. But, Borndon was not a shiny boot rookie. He knew that XOs talked, and flight coordinators, shipping officers, and communications officers listened. What did he care, he’d be running the supply office of his Father-in-law’s mining operation in another two months anyway.

“Vike?”

“Alright, alright…. there are rumors going around that there have been some attacks of some of the larger settlements along the Outer Rim. Apparently, an unknown military force, somehow, disables the defense systems and does there best to level the cities. The peculiar thing is that our defense forces in place have been fully neutralized during each occurrence. The latest scuttlebutt is that Bimmiel was the most recent incident. Preliminary reports (he glanced to the Captain to indicate that this was privileged information) indicate that not one X-Wing or A-Wing was recovered from the area.”

“What? You’re trying to tell me that they decimated an entire contingent of air defense and we have no idea who’s doing this?” There was disbelief in the tone. “How many snubs were on station at Bimmiel?”

“48 Captain.” Lt Zerron came back immediately.

“Good Gods, no wonder the old man is blowing his hatch. What has been determined by enemy wreckage?”

“That’s just it Captain, there hasn’t been any enemy wreckage. There haven’t been any flight survivors to describe them either. Each time, it’s like the entire defense force disappears as soon as they leave the atmosphere. No comm, no returnees, just pieces of fighters. If you ask me, it’s just plain spooky.” Said Lt. Zerron.

Spooky wasn’t the word Captain Borndon was thinking. To him, this was flat out scary. Bordon didn’t like the sound of this. And, worst of all, he knew how the military operated. As a career officer, he often mused that most of his time was spent complaining up the ladder about how he could requisition something like cold weather gear and not have it arrive until he was dangling in a bed of ice from the side of a cave somewhere. He could, only, imagine the difficulty the old man was having securing the resources to properly investigate this new threat.

“Hey, do me a favor and hunt down a friend of mine when you get a chance. The name’s Talon Karrde. He used to run the joint Intelligence operation between Bastion and the New Republic just after the Treaty was signed. He’ll remember me as the…” Borndon paused for a second and then smiled. “When you find him, just tell him that slipknot needs to talk to him. He’ll understand.”

“I’m not sure where to start. Do you have an idea what system he is working out of? If I had that, I could check with out nearest station.” Lt. Zerron responded helplessly.

“Karrde…working? Vike, those words are mutually exclusive.” He laughed. “Yeah, what was it now? Yeah…yeah, give a shout up to Ithor. Last I heard he was nosing around what was left of their library compounds. Digging up secrets no doubt. Blast, if other people didn’t have information or secrets, the poor Captain Karrde would be selling produce on the side of a road somewhere on Tatooine.” Borndon mused…”And Vike, if you hear anything else on this Bimmiel business, let me know, would you?”

“Aye aye Captain.”

CHAPTER 2

(Yavin 4 Outpost)

Fang Squadron was a reflective of many of the GFFA planetary defense forces in the post War galaxy. Most of the veteran pilots who had stepped up to fight during the Yuuzhan Vong War had trickled into retirement or personal interests over the last eight (8) years. Fang was not immune to these inevitable changes. However, they were luckier than most. Their squadron lead, Major Caraway Port, had seen action; more action than should end up on anyone’s card. He had lost count of the various battles in which he had participated. He, still, remembered each of his four (4) EV’s with horrifying clarity. Nothing shook his insides like going “freeze dried” and watching the battle continue all around him while sitting there like a target practice dummy. After his second EV, somewhere over Borleias, he started carrying a small compressed oxygen tube in his survival pack. The theory was that he could use the compression stream to maneuver, however small, in the event that some scar face in a flying rock felt particularly nasty.

It had become a habit, and as Fang approached the beacon, or whatever it was, Port absently put his left hand to the side pocket of flight suit to assure himself that he still had it.

“Alright you zips. You know the drill. #2 and #3. You’re on me. The rest of you, on the perimeter. Yell out if we get company.” Port commed.

Eleven (11) acknowledgments later and he was pulling left in a standard approach with his two wingmen to either side.

“Ground, we are on immediate approach of the unidentified beacon. We should be able to give you a visual any time.” Port said routinely.

Port took a second to check his heading and speed.

“Ground, are you reading? Waiting on a confirmation. Repeat, we are on immediate approach of unidentified beacon. Out.” Port said again, wondering what rubbernecking desk jockey had control of the comm.

Still nothing.

This wasn’t surprising Port he to himself. Last he heard, they had cut back on ground personnel. Chances are that there was some poor rookie down there trying to figure out where the little voice was coming from.

No, no, that wasn’t right. Port remembered that Vike was on station and in the control room when they got their orders to proceed to these coordinates. Vike was top shelf. He’d just assume relieve himself in his caf' cup than leave the communications bank unattended.

“Fang 2, Fang 3. I believe we have a comm. issue. I’m reading green, but you never know with these new whiz kids they have servicing our rides. See if you can raise Ground, Fang 2. Fang 3 standby.” Port droned out.

Two clicks sounded in acknowledgement.

“Lead, this is Fang 6, I’m picking up a small contingency of unidentified ships, medium size. They just dropped in to the far system about one standard minute ago. I count fifteen (15).”

Port glanced to his scope. Fang 6. That was the new kid. Alright, it’s nice to know someone was paying attention, Port thought to himself.

“Got’em Fang 6. Good eye. Fang 4, you have the Squadron. Form up on Four. Standard approach. Use 11 and 12 in reserve. We’ll be with you as soon as I get a connect with Ground.”

The connect never came. Without warning the all systems on board Fang Lead just stopped. Life support, weapons, defense, engines…nothing worked. Without the reflecting gas giant looming over Yavin 4, it would have been pitch black.

“What the…Fang 2, I’ve got a major malfunction here.” He glanced over to his right, and noticed that Fang 2’s cockpit was just as dark, and he was matching speed on their last trajectory.

“Fang 2, do you read?” He could see Fang 2 with both palms up exaggerating a shrug. He spun his line of vision to the other side. Just behind him he caught Fang 3’s cockpit as dark as his own. They all seemed to have full system failures at exactly the same time.

One’s an accident. Two’s an unbelievable coincidence. Three, I don’t think so.

Now Port understood the problem he was having with Ground. It wasn’t some rookie or a glitch of some sort. Someone set this up.

Major Port stuck to the training. When incapacitated make every effort to reset the systems. Well, that’d be nice, but he could hardly see a blasted thing. He swore to himself. Then he swore again at the thought that came into his mind next.

After a couple deep breaths.

Wait a second he thought. Something must be wrong with the portable oxygen generator in my vacuum suit.

It became difficult to breathe. It was like the air was, well, it just wasn’t there. He had become intimately familiar with the sound that the small generator made in his previous EV’s and he couldn’t pick up the sound. There should still be some oxygen in the cockpit, and sound would still travel. He put his gloved hand on the chest piece of the breathing apparatus to search out the minor vibration.

"Kriff!!!" The Vac Suit is malfunctioning too. His immediate response was to the men under his command. He whipped his line of sight to Fang 2. He watched with shock as Fang 2 was frantically fiddling with his flight suit. Then he risked a glimpse back to Fang 3. He seemed to be similarly occupied.

Think you dumb son-of-a…think…!!!

It came to him as he slammed his gloved hand down on the board as if that would, somehow jumpstart the ship.

The oxygen tanks attached to the life support system of the fighter. I have the oxygen. I just don’t have the delivery system. No, that wouldn’t work. How would I get them detached without a welding unit?

It was getting more difficult to breathe now. He couldn’t disengage his Vac suit or he’d freeze to death. He couldn’t use the life support systems. Think.

Yes! The survival gear stowed in the outward compartment. Standard gear included a number of stand alone breathing apparatus. But, Blast, that means an EV walk on a moving fighter.

Port moved without delay. He realized that he could not communicate what he needed to Fang 2 or Fang 3 with signals. Instead, he hoped that they were smart enough to follow his lead. After all, he was the Lead.

Getting the 'lid' popped manually on the cockpit of his X-Wing was a real chore, but he had added motivation, and was moving on adrenalin. Pulling himself up he grabbed onto the footholds to the left of the raised canopy. Placing his left hand into a firm grip of the foothold he stretched back towards the rear of the fighter to find another hand hold.

He glanced back over his right shoulder to see if Fang 3 had picked up on what, probably, appeared to be his own insanity. His heart sank at the sight. Slumped forward in the crash webbing sat Fang 3. There was no movement. He could do nothing for his wingman anymore, so he pushed it to the back of his mind.

Major Port took a deep breath, or as much as was possible and let go with his left hand and immediately grasped onto the fuselage and its connection to the wings. It was too much. He couldn’t get a firm grip and to his, absolute, horror floated away from the three X-Wings as they continued on. He gave himself a resigned sigh as it appeared clear that Fang 2 hadn’t gotten free before his oxygen depleted.

Now what could he do? He was floating in space, and nearly out of oxygen. Chances are the emergency beacon in his EV suit was not operational. And the topper was that his X-Wing was continuing on its last trajectory when the engines quit getting smaller by the nanosecond.

(Ossus System)

Luke was trying to be inconspicuous. Mara thought that was hilarious. Here was, possibly, the most famous man in the Galaxy, and he thought he could just blend in.

Luke stood in the same place he always occupied this time of the day. His short stature took away from none of his magnetism. It was just there, and it was impossible to seclude. Yet, the Master, and the unquestioned leader of the Jedi, thought that raising the hood of his robe would conceal his identity. Mara surveyed the other occupants of the balcony overlooking the sparring center down below. She couldn’t help chuckling as the spectators divided their time between the action down below and her husband standing to their right.

Good Gods, he was still the farm boy. She thought. How could I ever have held anything against this man? How could I have ever considered wanting to kill him those many years ago? She shook her head in that unbelievable truth. Then she chuckled when she saw him lurch forward in reaction to what was probably an exciting move down below on the mats.

She knew he would be here. What father wouldn’t want to watch his son, the apprentice, spar with his nephew, his Master? It was a daily ritual that Luke would not miss, and judging from his presence in the force, Ben was giving his father the requisite pride. Well, mothers deserve that same dose of parental satisfaction as well.

“Hey Skywalker, which of us is slated to accept Jacen’s formal surrender today?” she asked with a smile.

Luke did not turn, but he chuckled at the comment. “Our son may not be in a position to require Master Solo to capitulate. But…” He turned to his wife and took her hand. “…he is certainly progressing very nicely.”

Mara smiled, not at the news of her son’s prowess, but at the way Luke referred to his nephew as Master Solo. He was taking his son’s education very seriously, and made a conscious effort to separate personal from professional. She felt the grip on her hand tighten and turned to her husband.

Luke was intensely focused on a particularly intricate move that he knew was newly acquired, and therefore a risk to Ben. An eyebrow raised, followed by a smile as Ben completed a twisting forward flip while turning to block a thrust by his nephew. He turned to Mara.

“Did you see that?” Luke said with excitement.

Mara chuckled. “Of course my husband. Whom do you think taught it to him?”

Luke turned to her with a knowing nod. “Supplementing the arsenal so to say?”

“Something like that. Your son is rather methodical. He, merely, came to me a few nights ago and told me that wanted to improve his defensive options. I suggested that it is easier to defend yourself when you pick the field.”

Luke looked to her with interest.

“Would you like to know what your son said?”

Mara knew he was anxious to hear.

“Your son simply said...’Show me’. So I did. He, then, spent the next two standard hours practicing in our garden and judging from the shape of my Correllian Roses, it took a while to…get the feel.” Mara frowned at this last comment.

Luke frowned with her. “I’m sorry to hear that.”

Mara smiled, “A small price to pay to assure that our young one can turn a parry. And, I failed to tell you what else he did.”

“Oh, and what would that be?”

“Jacen stopped by unexpectedly before the weekly Council meeting and stood to the side while your son owned up to the merciless pruning, and asked for suggestions on how to earn some credits to replace them.” Mara said with a sense of pride.

Now Luke took his full attention way from the action below. “You don’t say.” Luke chuckled and nodded. “That pleases me more than a well executed flip.”

Mara nodded and smiled. “You have chosen well Master Skywalker. Master Solo is teaching our son more than how to operate a lightsaber.” Luke didn’t miss the amusement in Mara’s formality, but he understood the message.

(Yavin 4 Outpost)

“Kriffin’ frag…BLAST!!!!” Major Port was down to his last few breaths. He was going out on his terms. And, if that meant spending those breaths shouting out expletives in cold hard Space, then, by the fires of Tasmadine, that’s exactly what he was going to do.

He wished he had a belt of a nice aged libation to wash down his frustration. That would have made his helplessness a bit more bearable. But, no, all he had was this jacked up malfunctioning vac suit and his trusty little memento from the Yuuzhan Vong War to avoid…

“Good Gods Carr, you are possibility the daftest idiot in the galaxy!” He reached for the pocket on the side of the vac suit. There it was, his faithful little pseudo “jet pack” sitting in his gloved hand. One standard compressed tube of the elixir of the Gods…pure condensed oxygen; approximate longevity two (2) standard hours; packaged by Coruscant Interludent & Solids Company; keep away from flames.

“Coruscant?” Port joked to no one in particular. “Let’s hope that they packaged this one prior to that World Brain screwing up the air.”

Remarkably, he was able to attach the little tube directly to his helmet input.

“Good graces…let’s hope this isn’t just a cruel joke.” He opened up the valve, and immediately felt a fresh blast of air on his face. “Great, now I just prolonged a view that I don’t necessarily appreciate for two more hours. Now what?”

He was thrown out of his self-pity by three successive explosions visible just over the horizon. It was the approximate trajectory of his X-Wing.

“Bastards!” Fang 2 and Fang 3 were already dead, and whoever was orchestrating this…this butchering was destroying any evidence. Overkill he thought. If he ever got out of this he was going to hunt down those responsible and teach them the meaning of the word ‘retribution.’ “Bastards!!!”

CHAPTER 3

(Yavin 4 Outpost; Communications Center)

Lt. Zerron knew something was up the minute he couldn't raise Fang Squadron for a situation report. As gruff and cynical as Major Port was, he, also, was a stickler for details and protocol. If his own, personal, fighter was having comm. problems, he would have gone through the entire squadron right down to the rookies until someone connected a patch to Ground. Therefore, he was confident that the entire squadron was incommunicado. This had shades of Bimmiel written all over it.

He glanced over his right shoulder to see that Captain Borndon was still on station and chatting it up with the female Bothan sub-space message expert near the entrance hatch of the room. He was pretty sure that the conversation sat outside the boundaries of military necessity.

"Captain?"

Borndon glanced over to Lt. Zerron and indicated that he had his attention.

"Captain, do you have a second?" Zerron didn't want to shout his concerns across the entire room filled with peers of both lower and higher rank.

Borndon said something fleeting to the Bothan that invoked a laugh and waltzed back over to Lt. Zerron's station. "Yeah Vike? What's on your mind?"

"Will sir, I'm not sure. You know what I just told you about Bimmiel?" Lt. Zerron was still pushing it around in his mind.

"Vike…cut the sir stuff. If you're worried that I'll spread the information around, don't. I can be discrete as well as…" Lt. Zerron cut him off.

"No Sir. I mean. There could be trouble. I just don't know, but something's wrong with Fang. They aren't responding on the comm.”

Borndon transformed into seriousness instantaneously. "That's Port's outfit isn't it?"

"Yeah, he's not one to let it slide." Responded Zerron slowly.

"Show me on the scope. Punch up a full ship scan for the system."

Zerron went to work on the touch screen and the full system scan came to life. The Yavin 4 Outpost was usually pretty slow on its most busy days. But, the scene represented before them took their breath away. Fang was no where to be seen. The only ships on station appeared to be a number of medium sized freighters that were moving in formation towards the base from magnetic north over Yavin 4.

Borndon didn't waste a moment. All informality left him. "Lieutenant, red alert! Repeat red alert! Institute defensive protocol and see if you can get a long range connection to the old man! I'll take the blame if this is a mistake."

Lt. Zerron took in his words and nodded in agreement as his hands flew over the screen. The alarm siren pierced the air just as his hands settled back to the system scan screen. He had just put his vision onto the data to see if he could locate the beacon that initiated Fang's mission when everything on station went to black. No light, no sounds,…nothing.

"What the…this makes no sense." Lt. Zerron was frustrated.

"I'd say it does. Take out the communications, then attack." Borndon said matter of factly.

"No, that's not what I mean. These banks are on a stand-alone generator that is four meters under where I'm sitting right now. So is our illumination system. There's no access. The only way to disable it is to blow a crater four meters down. I'm still here, but the generator is, obviously, inoperable."

"Borndon's eyebrow went up at the news. "Come on. We're exposed here. Let's find a nice hole to climb into. Something tells me we know a little more than the last poor saps to be on the receiving end of this type of party. "

Borndon was watching Lt. Zerron wrestle the comm unit in front of him right out of its mounts. "What are you doing? We need to vacate! I'll buy you a new one."

Lt. Zerron struggled as a strained voice came back. "I can't access the recordings on the last few minutes. But, the records are stored in this portion of the bank. There's a fail safe in here. I'd hate to come back later and find nothing but debris. Give me a hand."

Someone had opened the outer door to the communications center and allowed light to flow into the room. With Borndon's help, Zerron had been able to rip open the comm. bank and remove the desired portion of the unit. As they vacated the building to head for the caves past the south lawn, Lt. Zerron turned to Borndon on the run.

"EMP!"

"Huh?"

Zerron was nodding to himself. "That has to be it. Someone has found a way to distribute Electromagnetic Pulse waves on a prolonged basis. More than that, they seem to have found a way to concentrate them on a target. That's why nothing mechanical or electronic is working."

After a few more steps, Lt. Zerron came to a complete stop, hopelessly exposed and without cover. It was obvious that his brain was working out the details as he turned to an impatient Borndon.

Borndon didn't give him a chance to try out his thoughts.

"Look Vike. I'd love to stand out here and discuss the mechanics of all this, but the fact of the matter is that any moment now, we are going to be laser fodder. So, wrap up your mental exercises and get your afterburners going. "

Zerron looked like he was going to ignore the advice, but at the last second he focused on Borndon. "Yeah, right. Yeah, of course. (he looked to the sky) Let's get going."

Convinced that the Lt. had recovered his awareness of the predicament, they pushed on to the caves.

"This isn't good." Said Zerron as they approached the mouth of the river cave. There was sadness in his tone "Fang." Is all he said.

"Yeah, I know."

(On board the Indigo Sky; Seris System; Outer Rim)

Sha, Tahiri, Jaina, and Jag waited patiently for the Holonet to come alive. They had fielded a recording from Master Luke marked urgent, and a specific time in which to return the communication. Judging by the Master's demeanor in the recording, the news was not positive. It had arrived while all four had been occupied with various obligations and assignments.

Tahiri and Jaina had spent the last few days conducting negotiations between the herding class and the farming class of the Seris grasslands. On the surface, this would not have been an issue that required the talents of the Jedi. However, over the last standard year, the conflict had grown violent. Whenever there were tempers, weapons and disagreements over property rights, there was the potential for escalation. Since a good percentage of the Seris economy was based on production out of this area, the planetary government had turned to the Galactic Senate for assistance in resolving the dispute. Unfortunately, the lack of personal political gain from the various Senators led them to a quorum vote in favor of, virtually, ignoring the matter.

Master Luke exercised the, recently, acquired autonomy of the Jedi to take on the problem. He had sent Jaina and Tahiri as mediators. To a great extent, they had been successful in their endeavors. In wrapping-up the tentative agreement between the parties, they had even noticed a growing camaraderie among the two factions. It was established that both ways of life were inherently dependent upon the other. Fertilizer deals were secured on behalf of the grazing class. Crop rotation applied to shared lands was secured on behalf of the farming class to assure maximum soil richness and a healthier crop. All in all, it was a solid foundation for future cooperation between the two disagreeing parties.

Sha and Jag had, also, been away from the Indigo Sky during Master Luke's holo.

Jag, had taken on the position of Ambassador Pro Temp to the GFFA on behalf of the Chiss Ascendancy. Traditionally, he would be the official contact of all inquiries by the GFFA towards the Chiss. There were few, since this was a rather new relationship, and, traditionally, the Chiss remained a closed society for defensive reasons. However, his position fit well with his wife's missions. Jag had seen his position as one of acquiring information and developing contacts as well. That required an exploration, of sorts, of the various resources and inhabitants throughout the galaxy. Truth be told, Jag enjoyed the rich differences found among varying cultures. That probably was rooted in his forced adherence to the continuity of Chiss culture. Change was, strangely, invigorating to him now. With each assignment given his wife, he was sure to include the surrounding civilizations into his ever-growing database of goodwill missions, study and introductions.

Additionally, Jag had held onto his Reserve status in the GFFA Air Defense (with special circumstances). Essentially, this meant that he had an open invitation to fly as a Chiss "observer" to all GFFA missions pending approval. It was a privilege that he exercised with discretion to keep sharp in the cockpit and satisfy his occasional cravings for his love and the challenge of flying the modified Claw Craft in combat.

Sha's job description was a bit more vague. He had spent the last couple of years under the direction of Master Jaina and Master Mara. His formal training as a Jedi had been intense, and slightly unorthodox being that it was at the hands of two demanding Masters. Upon his confirmation as Jedi Knight, Master Luke decided to apply Sha's background in GFFA Intelligence to establish a stand-alone intelligence gathering organization exclusive to the Jedi. This would allow an open and unhindered connection to the galaxy without the usual political filtering of the GFFA Senate. Most of his analysis and information gathering was accessible through the holonet, which allowed him the luxury of travel with his family provided he could set aside the requisite time to keep up with the incoming information from his, ever growing, contacts and other Jedi. Additionally, his traveling with his wife allowed him the opportunity to set up contacts on worlds that would add to the information gathering system already established. That was what he was doing on Seris when Master Luke's holo arrived earlier in the afternoon.

The girls, Mindrea and Symerra, had the opportunity to accompany their mothers to the signing of the domestic Treaty. All thought that they would be, somewhat, bored in the rote events. However, that turned out to be farthest from the truth.

They had been so used to being left out of Jaina's and Tahiri's daily activities, that being included was outright exciting for them. They took it upon themselves to take in as much as possible. By the end of the afternoon the girls had charmed themselves into animal rides, milking lessons, and a rather amusing participation in a celebratory dancing event that made Jaina tired just watching the little bundles of energy.

As the four of them waited on Master Luke, Symerra and Mindrea were out cold in their respective beds an hour in advance of their regular bedtime.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hello there Fel's and Lorrisay's came the familiar voice accompanying a miniature image of Luke." Mara sat beside Luke on the holoimage. Jaina noticed another familiar presence just behind her uncle even though a face was not visible.
The obligatory greetings and family inquiries were taken on, and Jacen knelt down into the image to smile at his twin.
"Hi there sis." He said with a familiar smile. "How are things out there on the farm?" he added with a chuckle.
"Yes, Jaina, Tahiri, I saw your preliminary reports on your assignment. Were you able to employ your suggested strategy with any success?" Luke inquired.
Being senior, Jaina fielded the question. "Things went optimistically well Uncle Luke. We have a signed Treaty, and there have been no casualties or property damage during the whole of our stay. The Treaty falls within the guidelines in our previous reports, and I might add that our three-year-old ambassadors of goodwill and frivolity provided sufficient entertainment during a festival thrown in honor of the agreement."
Everyone chuckled at the last part of Jaina's ad hoc recap.
"Well done then. I look forward to hearing the details at a later time. Now, however, I am afraid that I am going to have to ask you to delay your return to Ossus. Unfortunately, the logistics of these developments is going to require that I split up your team for a bit."
Luke pulled up a datapad into view and looked back to the images before him in his holoimage.
"Sha, Tahiri, today I received a communication from Jedi Tekli. As you are aware, we have been rotating assignments such that one Jedi is present on Zonoma Sekot at all times. It is our ambassador of sorts. Currently, Jedi Tekli is the representative. Incidentally, she has been gaining fantastic insight on healing through the Yuuzhan Vong shapers. She has developed quite a nice working relationship in that regard."
"Today, however, she was approached formally by Harrar, of the Priest Sect. He is acting as respresentative to their Ruling Counsel as well as spokesperson. We are all familiar with the assistance that Harrar has provided in trying to acclimate his people into peaceful, non-threatening habitants. To this point, they have existed, of course, in a form of isolationism in an effort to give their people a smoother transition into acceptance from, both, their perspective, and the perspective of others. It would appear that the Yuuzhan Vong are considering the next step on this long path."
Luke let the group absorb this last point.
"Harrar has, specifically, invited a representative of the Jedi to meet with their Ruling Council to discuss approaches toward the GFFA. While they are, more than likely, guarded in the amount of contact that they wish to solicit at this time, the Council feels that this is a good thing. It is, quite simply, the first step in acceptance from their people. They seem to be sincere in those efforts. I believe it would be in our best interest to acknowledge these efforts and accept this invitation."
Sha glanced over to his wife and noticed the raised eyebrow and the intense interest in Master Luke's comments. Jaina, on the other hand, understandably looked pessimistic on the issue. Sha had no idea what Jag was thinking. He offered no clues in his expression.
Luke continued. "Sha, Tahiri, I would like you to act on our behalf and accept the invitation. In addition, you will have company for this visit to Zonoma Sekot. Master Solo, behind me here, will meet you in the Seris system, as soon as possible in the Jade Shadow and you can travel together from there."
Mara cleared her throat as he finished. Sha thought it had something to do with allowing her nephew free reign of her treasured ship, of which she was very possessive, but he was wrong.
"Oh yes, how could I have forgotten?" Luke chuckled, knowing full well that he had done so on purpose. "There will be a young man traveling with Master Solo. He happens to be our son, and his apprentice. Ben is looking forward to participating. I believe he was younger than Symerra the last time he was on planet."
Tahiri spoke up after looking to Sha. Sha had, simply, nodded to the affirmative to imply his willingness to go along with whatever she had to say. Sha had noticed the importance of this to his wife by her expression and attention. Additionally, he knew that she didn’t need an excuse to visit Zonoma Sekot. They had eloped to the very planet over three years ago, and had been looking for the opportunity to take Symerra for her first visit. The allure of the planet could never be fully explained by either of them. They just thrived in its life, and the invigoration of the Force.
“Master,” Tahiri said. “We will certainly miss our traveling companions. The Fel’s and the Lorrisay’s have developed a special bond.” Tahiri looked to Jaina, and caught a smile at the comment. “However, Sha and I, as you are aware, have a special attachment to Zonoma Sekot, as well as the Yuuzhan Vong.” Tahiri paused to organize her words. “However, even if the previous were not true, we would, still, be honored to represent the Jedi in what I, personally, think could be the beginning of an important step forward in relations between the Yuuzhan Vong and the rest of Galaxy.”
Tahiri looked to Sha to see if he would like to add to her comments.
“Tahiri reflects my own thoughts and put it much more eloquently than I could have. I would only add that we look forward to spending some time with Master Solo, and his apprentice as well. Your son has told me previously of his interest in the planet, and his desire to experience it again after so many years. We look forward to sharing that experience with him.”
“Good, good. Yes, Ben is trying to hide his excitement about the visit. But, his mother and I are not easily fooled. We think that Jacen, Tahiri, and you can provide him with a unique perspective of the planet as well as the Yuuzhan Vong.” Luke’s tone turned somber.
“Jaina, Jag, I’m afraid that there is more to our message than a diplomatic envoy. Mara and I have been monitoring military matters from Ossus. Periodically, Wedge Antilles and I keep in touch to stay abreast of developments in both our circles. In our last discussion I picked up on something that was bothering him. He, finally, provided me with scant details in reference to sporadic attacks that have been taking place on some of the Outer Rim planets. “
Sha saw Mara hand Luke a separate datapad from which Luke took a glance before nodding.
“Sha, you have sent in a number of reports inclusive of analysis on what you termed to be…” Luke glanced down at the datapad again. “…'troubling attacks not consistent with pirates or rogue criminal organizations.' You, also, commented on the consistencies attributable to four (4) separate occurrences that were, more than likely, carried out by the same party. You provided a number of unexplained happenings that accompanied each attack. Your analysis suggested that there may be an unknown weapon or Force involved.”
Sha nodded to the image. “Yes, Master, I am very familiar with what you are referring to. I spent quite a bit of time over the last few days reviewing the information we have acquired, and set up a number of new contacts out here with these events in mind.”
“Yes, I figured as much. I would like you to stay on line for a bit longer after we are finished here. There is something for us to discuss.”
Luke exhaled and went on. “I’m sorry for going off on a tangent, but these attacks have me concerned. Jaina, I would like you to travel to the location of the most recent attack and see what you can dig up. Jag, I can’t ask you to participate formally, but I think you are aware of how much we value your assistance and participation when Jaina is involved. You both compliment each other well. Additionally, one of the individuals that I would like you to interview is a Major Carraway Port. He (Luke paused) was the only surviving member of an entire squadron of X-Wings in this attack. I understand you worked with Maj. Port on the Hydian Trade Route removing dovin basal mines during the War.”
“I did.” Replied Jag. “He is a bit salty around the edges, but a fine pilot and a purveyor of strict discipline. I would be happy to assist and promise to stay out of my wife’s way.”
This solicited a chuckle from Mara, who had remained silent until this point. That was uncharacteristic of her. “You need not worry about that Colonel, I will keep my niece busy. My husband and I will be joining you on…” She looked to Luke. “…Yavin 4.”
Jaina showed a bit of surprise at her Aunt’s revelation. This wasn’t just a distant Outer Rim world on a star map. This was a place she had spent a good portion of her youth training to be a Jedi.
Yavin 4?” Jaina said with as little emotion as she could muster.
“Yes Jaina. The attack occurred not quite a day ago. They are still cleaning up. However, Wedge has informed me that he has some officers at that outpost who were adept enough to secure some documentation of what occurred, and even hold a few theories on how it was done. What they don’t know is ‘who’ or 'why'.” Luke stated.
“Sha, we’re pretty sure that it is the same group that attacked the Outer Rim settlements. So, I hate to do this to you, but when you are done at Zonoma Sekot, I am going to have to ask you to join up with us. Your analysis to date seems to be on the correct path. And, as I mentioned earlier I would like to talk to you in privacy after we are completed here.”
"Absolutely, Master. There is no need to continue apologizing for keeping us from Ossus. The Indigo Sky is, more than comfortable, as is the Jade Shadow. But, most importantly, 'home' is more reflective of family and friends. They all seem to be gathering at Yavin 4. Tahiri, Symerra and I would have been disappointed to miss…the assembly."
As Jaina followed the conversation, she realized that the work they would need to complete on Yavin 4 would, likely, take Jag and her away from the Indigo Sky at the same time. Without the benefit of Sha and Tahiri to organize their schedule so someone would be watching Mindrea, there might be a problem.
“Uncle Luke, how, exactly, are you traveling to Yavin 4 without the benefit of the Jade Shadow?” She queried, hoping she knew the answer already.
Mara laughed outright. “My apprentice is a perceptive one. “ Mara seemed to contemplate. “We have booked passage on a freighter piloted by this surly old smuggler, and his princess wife. Incidentally, they offer a wonderful childcare program available to anyone who might find themselves with a three-year-old.”
Jaina laughed. “I was hoping you would say that. Mindrea will be thrilled.” Jaina looked to Tahiri and Sha, and they both nodded in unison, knowing her inquiry. She, then, turned back to holoimage. "Uncle Luke, Aunt Mara, I hope you will stay with us on the Indigo Sky while in-system at Yavin 4. I know the Millennium Falcon may hold sentimental comfort, but I think you may be more physically comfortable with us. We can provide you with a bit more legroom and the attached privacy of a full guest room."
Mara did not delay in the least. "We accept." And looked to Luke with a derisive grin.
“Good, then we are all set. We are leaving tomorrow. Jacen and Ben will be leaving in about three standard hours. It has been good to see you all. And, I would like to compliment you Jaina, and Tahiri on your successful mission. Well done.” Luke said with gratitude.
“Sha, if you would be so kind, it will not take long.”
The others moved on from the comm. station on the Indigo Sky as Sha remained. He knew what Master Luke needed to discuss. He was considering whether he should initiate the conversation himself or wait until he returned to Ossus so that they could meet in person. He had decided on the latter, but the new assignments had removed the opportunity.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mara remained with Master Luke, although, Jacen had left the image. Tahiri, Jag, and Jaina, had moved onto the galley so that Sha would have privacy in his conversation. Sha decided to take a bold step for him, but he felt it was important and the correct one.

“Master, forgive my impetuousness on this matter, but I am quite certain I know what we are to discuss.” He noticed that Luke was nodding to his words. “If it is permissible, I would like my wife involved in this conversation as well. She and I have no secrets. And, I am sure I do not have to remind you of the strength and wisdom that you are privileged to have at your disposal consistently in that regard.”

Mara chuckled. “This would be one of those times where the Master can learn from the Apprentice.”

“Yes, of course.” Luke was genuinely sincere. “I was being careful Sha. I did not know how much you had told Tahiri, and I wanted it to be your choice. Please include her.”

“Thank you Master.” Sha focused into the Force and asked Tahiri to join him. He could, already, hear the footsteps approaching from the galley.

When everyone was comfortable, and Luke had the opportunity to explain to Tahiri why he had not included her in the conversation originally, they moved to the topic at hand.

"I did not miss that portion of your report on the Outer Rim attacks where you implied the use of an unknown weapon…(he paused) or 'unknown Force."

Sha nodded. "I did not want to exclude the possibility that the direction on these attacks is somehow tied to the visions I have been experiencing. There is uneasiness that I sense in the back of my mind that indicates there is a relationship. It had been my intention to meet with you in person upon our return from this present mission to discuss it."

"I thought so." He glanced to Mara. "Mara, also, thought that we should do something to that effect. Tell me about your latest vision." Luke said.

"As you know, my past visions have been vague, and undefined. I have picked up on bits and pieces that imply Darkness. But, I believed the impression to be figurative and not, necessarily, reflective of a Dark Jedi." Sha paused. "I am still of that mindset. However, I am not relieved by the thought, because I am sensing a growing confidence with each of these attacks."

"Yes, I know exactly the feeling you are implying." Luke said with a nod.

"Another thing Master. My latest vision included well defined images." Sha watched Master Luke's expression with these words. He noticed a slight nod. "I am going to make a presumption, and assume that you have experienced the same."

"I have. They are…interesting." Luke said as if searching for the proper word, but settling on an all-inclusive one.

"Master, I have seen great conflict. There is a battle of sorts on the ground. I cannot make out the sides, or even the individuals, but I experienced the raw emotion of mêlée, and the sounds of metal on metal, the sounds of despair, and the single-mindedness of self-preservation in the heat of combat." Sha looked to Luke to catch his reaction.

"I have experienced the same." Luke nodded.

"There is something else; a presence. I had not felt it before. It was not until this latest vision that it was revealed. It is premature for me to try and speculate as to the meaning. I feel that I need to meditate on it. I believe that I will take advantage of Jacen's presence over the next couple of days to pursue it." Sha said contemplatively.

"A good idea. My nephew can be very calming in such efforts, and his insight in interpretation may assist your efforts."

Luke implied that the discussion was complete by stating. "Well, Lorrisay's, we look forward to hearing the results of your meeting on Zonoma Sekot." Luke looked to Mara with a smile. "And, please, make sure our son behaves himself. He has a tendency to have difficulty keeping up with his curiosity. I believe the wonders of that planet may pull him in a number of different directions."

Tahiri chuckled. "I sense that we will have similar problems with Symerra."

Mara joined the amusement. "I believe you are fortunate that Mindrea won't be there to escalate their curiosity. However, I believe you will find my son…" Smiling to Luke at the implied ownership. "…To be well disciplined, and willing to assist you in any fashion that you find necessary." She continued to smile. "My husband's son, however, will be a bit more of a free spirit. That is the Ben you should look out for."

"See you soon Lorrisay's, and may the Force be with you." Luke said while shaking his head.

"And with you as well Masters." Sha and Tahiri returned in unison.

CHAPTER 3 (continued)

(Seris System; Onboard the Indigo Sky)

Tahiri couldn't hold back a laugh as she eavesdropped on the conversation that was taking place just outside the confines of the cockpit.

"I know what I said, and nothing has changed. Of course you are family. We would never think to exclude you in any fashion. But, you have to understand that this is for your own good. Despite what you have misinterpreted, the simple fact is that you would not be greeted warmly were you to come with us to Zonoma Sekot."

"Good morning." Jaina said as she entered the cockpit. " What's all that about?" nodding to the discussion as she settled into the co-pilot's seat with her stim caf' and the flight log.

Tahiri shook her head in resignation to accommodate a smile. "Conduit thinks we are abandoning him."

"Oh?" Jaina looked up from the datapad.

"Apparently, he isn't sufficiently enlightened on how the Yuuzhan Vong feel towards droids." Tahiri laughed again. "I get the distinct impression that he thinks that Sha is trying to get rid of him." Now Jaina understood Tahiri's amusement as she considered the personalities that always seemed to develop in the R-2 Units.

Sha's voice was starting to rise with a hint of frustration. "I know what you think. But, you are blatantly mistaken. Look, you will be traveling to Yavin 4 with Vale and the Fel's. We will be there in a couple of days. Think of it as a vacation of sorts. You can spend the entire day devouring the holonet with no interruptions. Think of it…you can be a glutton. "

The heightened warbles and multi-toned tweets ending with the saddest droid generated tone Jaina had ever heard was enough for her to intervene on Sha's behalf.

Jaina raised her voice so that Sha, and Conduit could hear her. "Conduit, ask Vale for down load file 'Rhommamool 71'."

The resulting silence told Jaina that she had been heard by both. She, then, recognized the warbling and beeps accompanying the communication between both R-2 units. The resulting whirrr confirmed that Vale was accessing the suggested file.

Both R-2's established a common link through the modified, tandem droid station behind the navigation post so that the download of Jaina's suggested file could be transferred through the docking stations built into the interior wall of the cockpit.

Tahiri was staring to Jaina with curiosity. "What is 'Rhommamool 71'?"

"Aunt Mara, my mother, and I traveled to Rhommamool just before the beginning of the Yuuzhan Vong War. Nom Anor was disguised as a self-appointed leader of the Rhommamoolians. One of his little amusements was a large pit at the center of town that contained droids collected from all over the planet. They were subsequently destroyed, and burned in the pit. We happened to fly over it on our way off planet at Nom Anor's invitation, and Artoo recorded it. At some point, he passed the data to Vale."

Tahiri listened to the account from Jaina with interest. She had very nearly finished before the cockpit came alive with excited whistles, warbles, and an interspersed buzzing that she had never heard from the droid. Without warning, Conduit disengaged from the docking station and proceeded to move at maximum speed towards the rear of the ship. They could hear the constant chatter continue as Conduit continued deeper into the ship.

Jaina was showing amusement at the display, as Sha walked into the cockpit looking back over his shoulder. He turned forward to Tahiri and Jaina with a bit of a smile.

"Where's he going?" Tahiri asked similarly amused.

"I think he's going to hide." He turned to Jaina with a grin. "Thanks. It was getting frustrating." He thought for a second. "I should have, probably, prepared him a little better for that file though."

Without delay, the three of them watched as Vale pulled from his docking station and proceeded out of the cockpit in search of his comrade. The tones and beeps he left in his wake seemed to be an admonishment of sorts.

Jaina smiled again, and went back to her flight logs, shaking her head in amusement.

"All packed?" She said absently without looking up.

"All set." Sha responded. "Although, Symerra insists on taking Mindrea along."

Jaina chuckled. "I believe there is a similar plan from Mindrea's point of view. You know, as they get older, they will get more clever. We'll have to start checking travel bags for stowaways."

"Not a problem." Sha added in muse. "As they get older, they will, also, get bigger. That will severely hamper concealment."

A throat clearing just at the rear of the cockpit followed the comment.

The three turned to see Jag and the two girls, who looked, in a word, 'miserable', as they stood one on either side of him, each reaching upwards holding a hand.

"Good morning protectors of the galaxy. Might I suggest, in the interest of preparedness, and proper Jedi protocol, that we begin with the official inspection of our traveling junior dignitaries." Jag's face was serious and professional, but Jaina caught the hint of a smile flashing in his green eyes.

Jag knew the little ones hadn't the faintest idea what he was saying in the substantive sense. However, he had made the effort to make it sound important and official. He raised an eyebrow to his wife to gain her participation.

"Absolutely Colonel. Please instruct the recruits to present themselves at attention so that we may commence with the inspection." Jaina said, trying desperately to keep all idleness out of her voice and stature.

"Very well Colonel Solo-Fel." Jag took a long step forward as he disengaged their hands. Then did a crisp about-face and looked down to Mindrea and Symerra. "Ladies…" He took in the surprised, yet inquisitive, expressions staring back up at him. "…Please stand at attention so that you may be addressed and inspected by Jedi Master Jaina Fel; Jedi Knight Tahiri Lorrisay; and Jedi Knight Shaud Lorrisay."

Jag waited for the girls to comply, which they did almost instantly without a hint of a smile. Jag did another crisp about-face and proceeded to the console of the cockpit, completed another about-face and stood with the other adults who had all risen to face Mindrea and Symerra.

Jaina elbowed Tahiri and they both stepped forward. They proceeded to divide their attention between the two little girls. Occasionally, one of the women would let out a "hmmmmm" as if in appraisal or evaluation. With each one, the girls seemed to straighten up even more. Finally, Tahiri turned to Sha and curtly stated.

"Jedi Knight Lorrisay. I believe our dignitaries are ready for their briefing."

This caught Sha by surprise. He had been so amused by the display, and Jag's ingenuity that he hadn't considered that he would have a role to play. Recovering quickly, he stumbled across an idea.

Sha nodded and waited for Jaina and Tahiri to return to the original positions. He then, strolled purposely to the center of the cockpit to address the girls.

"Mindrea Fel; Symerra Lorrisay. I hereby deputize you, both, as temporary Intelligence operatives, reportable to me." He glanced seriously to both. "Do you accept the position and the attached responsibilities?" Sha took on an expression that implied that a response was required.

"Yes." Two serious voices returned in unison.

"Excellent." Sha responded. "Now, about your duties." He summoned a seriousness in his demeanor and sensed the amusement behind him in the direction he was going.

"Operative Mindrea Fel. You are assigned to the Yavin 4 System. It will be your job to observe and report anything out of the ordinary. You will, also, make every effort to purvey a sense of enjoyment as you spend time with your family and friends. Any assistance requested during this mission from those affiliated with the Jedi will be provided forthwith." He paused while she absorbed the message. "Are we clear?"

"Affirmative." Came back to him quickly, and in a voice struggling to go lower.

Sha heard obvious reaction from behind him, and fought his own battle not to portray anything other than dead seriousness. Then he turned to his own daughter.

"Operative Symerra Lorrisay. You are assigned to Zonoma Sekot. You will, likewise, observe and report anything out of the ordinary. Your secondary responsibilities will consist of enjoying the mission as you experience as many new things and events as time would allow. It will be important that these experiences are shared with all representatives of the Jedi on this same mission. " Again, Sha paused for effect. "Are we clear?"

Symerra followed Mindrea's lead and responded. "Affirmative."

"Good. Very good…. Now, in nearly three to four days time, we will all meet for a joint debriefing. It is important that both of you are prepared to discuss your reports at that time in a concise and accurate fashion." He appraised them both, and the nodding little serious faces. "Very well. Colonel?"

Jag stepped forward and stood to Sha's right. "Disssssmissssssed." He said with formality. They stood for the briefest of moments whereby a noticeable concentration appeared on both of their faces. Then, in tandem, they did their best to do an about-face, before marching out of the cockpit and down towards the galley.

It was not long before the muffled laughter of the cockpit was broken by a hailing call of the Jade Shadow.

CHAPTER 3 (continued)

(Aboard the Indigo Sky; Seris System; Outer Rim)

An immediate search of the ship found Conduit trying to blend in with the trash receptacles in the maintenance shop of the aft storage facility. Jag caught the movement of a raised sight cam following his progress across the area. When he turned quickly to confront the discovery, Conduit let out an excited little beep.

It took some coaxing. However, in short order, Conduit was placed in one of the X-Wings; Vale in the other, to move them, temporarily, out of the aft stow so that the Jade Shadow could dock with the forward hatch secured inside the energy curtain that kept life support operational.

Tahiri found it amusing that Sha had taken the time to pull the little droid aside prior to this in order to give him a proper 'goodbye,' and assurances on their return. Symerra had even given his dome a quick hug, which solicited the usual whistles and warbles, and a rocking back in forth that made her giggle as she imitated the droid's actions.

The Jade Shadow, itself was a beautiful piece of work. Its aesthetic pleasures were only surpassed by its deadly armaments and deceptive speed. Currently, however, it was hanging, partially, out the back of the Indigo Sky as if in the process of being swallowed by a Porsythe Fish under the lakes of Naboo. The hatch opened in a hisssss, and the ramp extended in advance of the arrivals. Yet, no one came forward.

As the moments passed, there was consideration as to boarding to see if there was a problem. However, before anyone could take action, two small and magnificently wrapped boxes complete with flowing bows levitated out of the Jade Shadow's hatch. They smoothly and evenly moved toward the group at the end of the ramp. As if searching out their destination, they, both, halted in mid-air just out of reach. One box, then the other moved directly to Mindrea and Symerra respectively. As they reached the girls, Jaina sensed a thought from Jacen in the Force.

"Put out your hands girls." She said with a smile.

They did so instantly as the gifts dropped softly into their fingers. When they looked up from such a wonderful surprise, Jacen and Ben were standing at the end of the ramp smiling to the group.

Jacen winked to Sha. "Distraction…what do you think?"

Sha laughed. "Excellent exploitation of our avarice nature."

Instantly, Mindrea jumped forward to give her Uncle a momentum-fortified hug. Symerra didn't hold back either. As Sha had noticed in the past, anyone who gave her a present, usually, got a lot of attention in return. Surprisingly, 12 year old Ben didn't shy away from the attention. Instead, he knelt down to face level with Symerra and returned the hug with a smile and a "Hey there, despite the wonderful wrapping we did on these boxes, aren't you the least bit interested in knowing what is inside?"

By this time, Mindrea had turned to her cousin for the requisite hug and caught Ben's words to Symerra, who was now looking down with interest at the present. She followed suit. Symerra considered the situation, and decided to expedite the greetings by giving a fleeting hug to Jacen, who just laughed at the way his apprentice had manipulated the focus of the girls. He, then, looked to his twin and opened his arms in invitation.

Jaina didn't hesitate. She, always, enjoyed watching the girls go through their little greeting rituals, but it was forever special to reconnect with her own twin after prolonged periods in separation. The twin-bond between them was a complete sharing that exposed their experiences, thoughts, and psyche; good, bad or indifferent. It was instantaneous and all encompassing at the same time.

Jacen took an immediate step back from her embrace and looked his sister in the eye with a smile of delight.

"What?" She said.

"Life agrees with you Sis. I mean, it really agrees with you. I've never experienced such contentment from you…(he paused)…ever."

Jaina, almost, appeared embarrassed by the words. "Yes, well…" She nodded to Mindrea, then a quick glance to Jag, followed by an over-emphasized reference to her surroundings. "…can you blame me?"

Jacen just nodded before turning to his Apprentice/nephew and guiding him through the maze of little girls eyeing their unopened presents to his Aunt.

Jaina gave her cousin the once over. "Each time I see you, Ben Skywalker, you add another centimeter. More and more handsome each time as well. It is good to see you." She said with a hug. She couldn't help noticing her Uncle's eyes and facial features in the 12 year old boy as she leaned into him. "How is my brother as a Master?" she whispered. Then she quickly smiled to him. "Don't worry; the question was rhetorical."

Turning to Jag, who had stepped forward in what Jacen thought would be one of his trademark greetings; Jacen eyed his brother-in-law with a smile. Jacen had taken to interacting with Jag in such a way as to try and fluster the usual formality of the man. It was good-natured in intent, however. As usual, Jacen waited for the standard customary handshake and formal droll. Jag surprised him with a solid hug and not a hint of a bow.

"Jacen, it is good to see you." Jag stated as informally as was possible for him.

Jacen glanced over to Jaina at the exchange with a look of complete surprise. She just smiled with a look of victory. Apparently, she was onto her brother's harmless fun.

The greetings continued until the entire field had been covered. Then, attention returned to Mindrea and Symerra, who had that look of pleading to their respective parents.

"Can we open the presents?" Mindrea asked.

"Take them to the galley. I'm sure your Uncle is dying for a good cup of caf'. You can open it there." Said Jaina, while seeing a nod from Tahiri to Symerra to do the same.

As they proceeded to the galley, Jacen moved to Tahiri's side and gave her a devious look. "You, young lady, seem particularly in high spirits. Is this in anticipation of our trip to Zonama Sekot, the joy of our arrival, or have you been partaking of the same intoxicant that seems to have effected my sister with such abandon?"

Tahiri smiled back at him. "Yes, yes, and yes. You know, it's kind of ironic if you think about it."

"What is?" Jacen said with interest.

"If I had to pick the two most dejected, cynical, down trodden people I knew just ten years ago, do you know who I would be forced to select?" She asked in a serious nature.

Jacen grasped her point and nodded. Then he gave her a genuine look of understanding. He leaned down and whispered quietly as they walked. "Welcome back…we missed you both."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Symerra and Mindrea wasted no time in securing their usual positions at the table in the galley. The last of the group had just entered the hatch as they started removing the wrapping paper to reveal two black, hard-cased boxes. With a little help from the closest adults due to the stiff springs on the hinges, the boxes were opened together. The little girls were breathless at what was revealed.
Jaina and Tahiri moved behind their daughters to get a better view of the contents. Centered on a pad of black velvet was a beautiful stone shimmering with the light of the galley. Surrounding each of the stones was a shell that perfectly framed the centerpiece. And tucked under the beautiful contents was an elegant (yet durable) neck chain sized for a three-year-olds neck. The surprise and delight of the girls was priceless.
Jaina looked up to Jacen, as did Tahiri, in appreciation. Jacen tossed his head to the left towards Ben. "My apprentice was given the task of improving my status in the eyes of your daughters. Mom and Aunt Mara might have had a hand in the selection as well, but my Apprentice has been tight-lipped on the issue." He glanced to Ben, who was smiling at the reaction to the gifts.
"They are Lambent Crystals." He proclaimed with not the least bit of pride. "The shells are from the Mon Cal Undersea Dorcos mines." He added. "And the chains. Well, they're from Ossus. But, they look OK, right?"
The girls were nodding absently, and not taking their eyes off their gifts. Suddenly, Symerra looked up excitedly to Ben.
"The colors!!! Just like Mommy's lightsaber." Symerra exclaimed.
The thought immediately registered with Mindrea. Hers had a slight violet aura. Symerra's had a golden one. Jacen had not picked up on this previously, and looked to Ben with an added pride in his Apprentice.
"Perhaps I will have my Apprentice pick out future Life Day gifts. He seems to have a knack for propriety." Jacen mused.
Jaina handed a cup of fresh brewed caf' to Jacen, and flavored water to Ben. "Girls? Have we forgotten our manners?" she said over her shoulder.
She couldn't help laughing as the girls thanked Ben aggressively, all but ignoring their uncle but for a fleeting mention.
CHAPTER 4
(Aboard the Jade Shadow; In route to Zonama Sekot)
The Jade Shadow disembarked nearly two standard hours later, with Sha, Tahiri, and Symerra added to the manifold. The 'good-byes' on the Indigo Sky were touching and a bit emotional, but nothing approaching difficult. Apparently the girls were taking their "assignments" rather seriously. Even Jag let out a chuckle when Mindrea chose to salute Sha prior to offering a hug. Watching the two three-year-olds offer each other a salute before Symerra boarded the Jade Shadow confused Jacen and Ben until they were let in on the previous events. Jacen took the opportunity to nod his appreciation to his brother-in-law for the ingenuity.
Sha got a certain deviant pleasure at the confused look on Ben’s face when he loaded three carry-on terrariums onto the Jade Shadow. They weren’t 15 standard minutes into hyperspace before Ben vacated the co-pilot’s seat to steal back to the hold and give them a closer look. Sha had been sitting in the Navigator’s slot at the time and watched an amused Jacen follow his apprentice with his eyes as he left.
Jacen turned to Sha. “You better get back there before he sticks his hand in one of them. My Apprentice is naturally curious.”
Sha chuckled. “I suppose you’re right.” Sha got up to follow. “It will give my wife and daughter the opportunity to pry into your social life.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sha found Ben bent at the waist staring intently into the green foliage of one of the tranparisteel containers.

“Do you see anything?” Sha said startling Ben out of his concentration.

“Oh,…ummmm….Hi Master. I was just looking.” The boy responded uncomfortably.

Sha smiled at him. “Ben, two things. First, just plain ‘Sha’ will do. I’ve not acquired the honor of ‘Master’, nor would I feel comfortable just yet with such an honor. Secondly, curiosity and observation are good qualities to have, provided you don’t go jumping head first into a Zork infested swamp to see if anything is in residence or hungry.”

Ben smiled in relief at the informality of the Jedi. Then he appeared to start to say something before stopping.

“What?” Sha simply asked.

“Oh, it’s nothing really. It’s just that you are a lot like my mom. That sounded just like something she would say.” Ben said reluctantly.

“Your mother, my Master, is fine company with which to be compared. I take that as a compliment of the highest order.” Sha said without reservation as he noticed the pride in the boy. He put his hand on the lid of the first container.

“Let me show you what we have here.”

Ben moved over to get a better look as Sha lifted the lid. Sha placed his right arm into the growth such that Ben could not see his hand or the sleeve of his tunic. A smile came across his face as he removed his hand without delay. He looked to Ben to see if he glimpsed what had occurred. Ben’s expression was inquisitive.

“I don’t see anything but plant life.” He said.

“Are you sure?” Sha said as he straightened his right arm towards the adolescent.

Ben looked to the outstretched appendage and noticed movement. Instantly, he took a small step back as he watched a viper curl down Sha’s arm and slide into his half-open hand. In a fluid move, Sha extended his arm even straighter and lifted it over his head as the viper fully extended into a rigid, linear shape over two meters in length.

Ben watched intently as Sha began to apply the, now hardened, viper in various twirls, plunges, thrusts and spins as if wielding a weapon. The dexterity of the Jedi astounded him. The viper seemed to become an extension of the man. And, then, without warning, it was gone. As if a magic trick, the viper appeared from the other sleeve, only it must have been a different one, because the original was acting as a whip as Sha’s right arm snapped forward over Ben’s shoulder. The second viper did the same over the other shoulder of the Apprentice.

Sha smiled to Ben as he straightened both arms and the vipers responded instantaneously to the command. Both became rigid as Sha moved into various Yuuzhan Vong attack moves. The vipers, now extensions of both arms moved with such speed and adroitness that Ben only saw the blur of the spin. He took it all in with awe and respect. Just as it dawned on him as to what he was seeing, Sha snapped both wrists creating a noticeable ‘crack’ in the room. Ben flinched at the unexpected sound. When his line of vision returned, the vipers, or Amphistaffs, were no where to be seen. They had disappeared to some concealment on the Jedi.

Ben was speechless as he fumbled for a number of different questions that had been chasing after each other during the demonstration. Sha, patiently, waited.

“Amphistaffs.” Was all the boy could offer.

“Correct.” Said Sha.

“That was…amazing. Will you teach me?” Ben exhibited controlled excitement at the proposition.

Sha gave Ben a contemplative stare. “I will consider it if your Master sees it as a valid addition to your education. However, if he does not, you must accept his decision without remorse or question.”

Ben returned to a more formal center. “I will abide by what Master Solo decides.”

“Good, now let me introduce you to some of my other friends. And, incidentally, most of these little guests are Tahiri’s. If you think I provided an adequate demonstration, you should see her handle an Amphistaff. It is a thing of beauty.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“And?”
Tahiri wasn’t content with Jacen’s continued cryptic responses to, as Sha had put it, her prying.
“And nothing.” Jacen responded without even allowing a breath after the question.
“Jacen, you know me, I’m persistent. I’m nosey. I’m unrepentant when I latch onto something that interests me. So save yourself the aggravation and stop avoiding the issue.
“There’s nothing there. You are wasting your time.” Jacen said unconvincingly.
“OK, enough. Let’s take a look at the facts. Jaina and I are very good friends. We spend a lot of time together when we work. We spend, even, more time together when we are not working. We confide in each other on any number of different things.” Tahiri let that sink in before going on.
“Additionally, Jaina communicates consistently with the Queen Mother of Hapes, who is, also, a very close friend of hers. As strange as it may be sound, that very same Queen Mother of Hapes has developed a rather close friendship with yours truly as well. Imagine that. She and I communicate weekly and Tenel Ka has been assisting us in hunting down information on Symerra’s deceased biological parents. She is from Hapes you know. But, we talk of other things too.” Tahiri saw the growing interest on her friend now.
“Ah, I have your attention now, don’t I?” She smiled at Jacen in a knowing way.
“Tahiri, it is you who is wasting time with this…this…line of questioning.” Jacen sighed. “It doesn’t matter what feelings may exist between Tenel Ka and me. It wouldn’t matter if we were both helplessly and hopelessly in love with each other. Because, she is the Queen Mother of Hapes, and all that I could hope to be to her would fall under the category of (he paused)‘subservient concubine.’” He added an additional sigh. “Neither one of us would be happy with that arrangement; especially me.”
Tahiri understood Jacen’s frustration. However, she, also, knew through her continued friendship with Tenel Ka and Jaina that the Queen Mother was reconsidering that role. There had been some recent possibilities that might allow her to pursue her own personal quests and goals including the potential to step down from the throne without compromising the lives of her subjects.
“No, I expect not.” She said. “But, things change. They always do.” She finished.
Jacen just shook his head and pretended to look involved with a datapad he had in front of him. Tahiri, on the other hand, had an inward smile. She had confirmed something that Jacen could not conceal. The words he spoke meant little in comparison to what his face had communicated.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Yavin 4 System)

The Indigo Sky had slipped into the far reaches of the Yavin 4 System at nearly 23:00 the following day. The Millennium Falcon was expected to join them at the planned rendezvous sometime the next morning. As morning approached, Jag had rigged a tether to the R-2 units so he could remove the two remaining X-Wings, and the Claw Craft to allow room for the Falcon to land fully in the giant aft hold. The Jade Shadow had taken one of the X-Wings in its smaller hold as a precaution.

Jaina was monitoring the comm unit and the long distance sensor array in the cockpit while Mindrea worked diligently on a drawing for her grandparents from a boosted co-pilot's seat.

"How's it coming sweetheart?" Jaina asked as she noticed a ship about the size of the Falcon come out of hyperspace.

"Just…about…finished." She said deliberately as if in acute concentration when she spoke.

Jaina looked over Mindrea's shoulder to take in her daughter's interpretation of her parents. She nearly laughed when she saw how Mindrea had exaggerated the area around her father's belt. For his age, Han was in rather remarkable shape. However, he wasn't as solid and taut as the olden days. Jaina knew that the drawing was sure to provoke some sort of response. She, also, knew her mother would find it as amusing as she did.

"Indigo Sky, this is the Millennium Falcon." Said a familiar voice. "We are approaching from 2-4-0. Turn the light on for us and we promise not to scratch the paint."

"Hi Dad. Who's that behind you?" Jaina said as she noticed a number of smaller vessels form behind the Falcon on the scope.

"That would be our escort sweetheart." Responded Han as if it was no concern.

Jaina was nearly overwhelmed as she reached into the Force only expecting to recognize the presence of her parents, Uncle Luke and Aunt Mara. However, the Jedi potency that was returned to her raised excitement and a smile. "Kyp?, Kyp is with you?" She asked of her father.

"The prodigal son has returned." Came a cheerful baritone voice that she had not heard in, over six standard years. "Greetings, oh Great One. Permission to dock with your monstrosity of a ship."

Jaina held her wide smile and responded in kind. "Permission granted provided you have an acceptable excuse for disappearing off our collective scopes for the last six years."

Another voice broke in. "Thisssss one was hoping for another six years…," said the voice in obvious jest. What followed were two very distinct hissing laughs over the comm, and, even, a chuckle from Kyp.

Jaina was coming to terms with the concept of seeing Kyp for the first time in over half a decade, and was interrupted by the arrival of two other friends she had not seen in nearly as long. "Saba? Tesar?"

"Alright, I know how much you Jedi love to gab. But, unless my daughter tears herself away from the reunion and makes an effort to open the aft port, we're going to make our own hole."

"Right." Jaina said as she realized from the system scan in front of her that the Falcon was nearly on top of her location. Reaching across the console to internal ops, she activated the switch that controlled the mammoth aft hatch. As she received green on the board, she sensed Jag entering the cockpit behind her. Her Force sense was confirmed by his hands on her shoulders as she watched the progress of the door.

"Our visitors have arrived." She said leaning back into him.

"So I gather." He said while looking over to Mindrea, who was putting her vast drawing tools away into the storage box. He glanced to her finished picture and leaned down to Jaina's right ear with a smile. "Your father might not appreciate the subtleties of our daughter’s imagination." He whispered.

Jaina laughed at the comment. "My father will surely address it. But, he has no ability of intimidation with her. Granddaughters are immune. Ultimately, he will spend the next few days sucking in his midriff."

"Come, we have guests to greet." She said lifting out of the station. She turned into Jag with a smile. "And a few surprises in the form of old friends." Jaina knew that Jag would be very pleased to see Kyp again. Over time, she had enlightened him on all that he had done on her behalf, and Jag felt a significant debt towards him, in addition to a complex friendship based on mutual respect.

They gathered Mindrea with her prized likeness of her grandparents and made their way back through the ship.

(Aboard the Jade Shadow; In route to Zonama Sekot)

Jacen, Sha, Tahiri, and Ben were all seated in the portion of the Jade Shadow that served as a work station and excess storage hold. Symerra had insisted on being there as well due to her newfound status as a temporary Intelligence Officer. They were all amused at how serious the face was when she made that request. It was nearly impossible to keep the enjoyment out of their visage, but it was a necessity less they hurt her feelings by belittling her participation.

Jacen was the first to speak. "By now, Tekli, would have returned our acceptance of the invitation presented by Harrar. Therefore, we are expected." He smiled a bit, as if, somewhat embarrassed by what he had to say next.

"Uncle Luke made some suggestions on how to approach this summit. However, I am not sure I feel comfortable or knowledgeable enough to carry it off." Jacen said as he looked to Symerra and smiled at the undivided attention she was giving him.

"Why don't you lay everything out for us, and we will make suggestions, or provide possible alternatives should it be necessary?" responded Tahiri.

Jacen sighed and looked over to his Apprentice. Ben held the same expression as his niece, and the same visible interest in the discussion.

"Well, Uncle Luke seems to think that my Apprentice and I should act in leadership roles during our visit. He believes that you two should take on the roles of protocol officer and advisory committee." Jacen said with a bit of a cringe. Obviously, he didn't feel comfortable in directing two Jedi who, easily, had a bit more experience with the everyday Yuuzhan Vong cultural idiosyncratic tendencies. While Jacen had absorbed quite a bit of knowledge of Yuuzhan Vong life while in custody, he rarely was outside of a controlled military environment.

Sha spoke right away while nodding to Tahiri. "Jacen, Master Skywalker is dead on with his suggestions. Had he not recommended this approach…" He opened his hand to Tahiri. "…we, certainly, would have."

Jacen looked to his Apprentice, who appeared to be surprised, and a bit confused by Sha's comments. Tahiri recognized the same expression on Jacen as well.

"Jacen, you are the twin. You were instrumental in the defeat of Shimmra, and, ultimately, Onimi. You, personally, destroyed the Voxyn host. Ben, your father, physically, dispatched of Shimmra. He was instrumental in locating Zonama Sekot, as were you, Jacen." Tahiri let those facts set in.

"The Yuuzhan Vong consider it a sign of respect when the representatives that address them are those that they value based on their own set of ideals. To them, you are important. Based on their hierarchy being established in a Domain system, the families of those they respect are similarly valued." Sha added as he turned to Ben. "I would not be surprised to learn that Ben's presence on Zonama Sekot, as son to Luke Skywalker, would greatly honor all their castes."

Ben was smiling at this news. He turned to his Master in amusement. "Do not worry Master, I will not embarrass you."

Jacen took in this advice from the Lorrisay's. It seemed to make sense. "What of your roles of advisor and protocol. Do you think that best serves our mission?"

Tahiri chuckled at the question, and caused a bit of confusion to both Master and Apprentice. "Jacen, you are going to have to stop thinking one-dimensionally. Advisors to the Yuuzhan Vong rarely provide words of advice. Essentially, they are more likely to advise through their actions. It is their responsibility to make their leaders appear strong, not suggest ideas of how they might achieve that strength."

"What, exactly, are you saying? Jacen asked with concern.

Sha took the practical approach and answered for Tahiri. "Those terrariums we brought with us. They are not pets. Consider them your advisory council." Sha noticed Tahiri's amusement in this explanation.

Now Jacen understood what they were saying. It would be their responsibility to field challenges…physical challenges, from those who opposed this meeting. It would, also, be their responsibility to improve the stature of Jacen and Ben by succeeding in challenges of their own to opposing or skeptical parties. That held the potential of being a daunting task, and a deadly one.

"No, I can't let you do that." Jacen glanced to Symerra as he said this. "I can't see the need to put you both at physical risk. There has to be a more civilized approach."

Tahiri took on a demeanor that Sha rarely saw off the sparring mat. "Jacen, we will not be the ones in peril." The look that she transferred to the others was pure confidence and competence.

"If I am not totally mistaken, it is my guess that Harrar will have a strategy in place that will provide sufficient tradition, as well as the opportunity to gain the trust of those with which we are scheduled to meet." Sha added.

Jacen seemed undecided and uneasy about the information he had just heard. "I don't know about this."

"Jacen…" Tahiri said with a bit of a smile. "…What if we promise not to hurt anyone beyond superficial wounds?"

Sha laughed at his wife's comment knowing full well that she was not taking it lightly, but just trying to convince Jacen that she was confident in their abilities.

Jacen shook his head as he considered the confidence of the two. It was Symerra who broke the silence. "I agree with Mommy."

Sha laughed out loud at the unexpected and very verbal show of support. The others followed, as Symerra smiled with pride that she had been recognized at her first official planning session.

"Okay, Okay,” Jacen said in resignation. “I cannot argue with one of such distinction." He glanced to Symerra. "But, you will make sure that your Mommy and Daddy are careful…yes?"

"Yes Master." She said with all seriousness, as she looked to her mother with raised eyebrows.

CHAPTER 5

(Aboard the Indigo Sky; Yavin 4 System)

Mindrea made sure that Jaina had picked out a jumper that allowed for the prominent display of her new necklace. She kept trying to look down her chin to assure that it was centered properly, but the chain was too short to accomplish the task. Still, as if forgetting that little inconvenience, she continued to do so sporadically while they waited for the Falcon to power down in the landing bay, and the hatch to advance.

The X-Wings were just coming through the shield curtain slow enough to determine sufficient landing areas to accommodate their full girth around the stationery Falcon. It would be a tight fit.

While the noise level was heightened by the menagerie of repulsors, Jaina caught the hiss of the Falcon's hatch depressurizing and the extension of the ramp. Leia was out of the hatch before the ramp had completed its journey to the deck. She walked at a hurried pace as she kept her destination in sight the entire time. The smile she carried told Jaina that her mother was elated to see them. She noticed her glance to Mindrea, and the smile widened to what Jaina thought exceeded the maximum specs.

Leia stopped just meters from Jaina, Jag, and Mindrea. Ever the princess, Jaina thought, as Leia displayed a look of embellished awe towards Mindrea.

"Ohhhhh, what a beautiful necklace Mindrea. It looks stunning on you." As Mindrea, again, tried to take in the necklace from such an impossible angle, Leia looked to Jaina and offered a wink with her continued smile. Then, Leia, finished her journey and swept up Mindrea in a flurry of kisses.

"Hi." She said with chuckle.

"Hi Grandma." The little voice came back.

Leia looked up to Jaina without letting go of Mindrea. "She looks more like you each time we see her." With that, she stood up and stepped to Jag and Jaina. She was just able to put one arm around each and gave a solid hug. Leaning up she planted a kiss on both of their cheeks.

"Hi Mom." Jaina chuckled. “I get the impression you are happy to see us.”

"Of course I am. You happen to be my favorite daughter. And, Mindrea happens to be my favorite granddaughter." She said as she motioned for Mindrea to come and stand next to her.

Jaina smiled as Jag bent to his knee to straighten Mindrea's necklace. It had twisted around in the flurry of hugs from Leia. This caught Leia's attention as Jag whispered in his daughter’s ear. "Hey little one, look who's coming."

Mindrea craned her neck around and caught sight of Han reaching the end of the ramp. As he stepped to the deck, he pretended to ignore her and walked at an angle that would take him just past where she stood. As soon as he was close enough to hear, Mindrea yelled out above the repulsors.

"Grandpa!?"

Han did a traditional double take as if aware of her presence for the first time. He feigned a look of confusion, and faked as if he was just going to continue on his way.

"GRANDPA !?" Mindrea said with more enforcement as she rolled her eyes in the process.

Han turned again. This time he feigned recognition, shot over to the group, and picked her up in a sweeping hug. The laugh and the smiles of the two were infectious.

"Well, hello Pudge. I didn't see you there." Han had taken to affectionately calling Mindrea 'Pudge' due to two pudgy cheeks that graced her in her infancy. He never stopped after the baby fat redistributed when she got older. To Han, it was part of a special bonding between the two. There is no doubt that he would be calling her that for the rest of his years, and she would continue to love it long after.

"You saw me Grandpa. You were just trying to be funny."

"Trying being the operative word." Jaina added as she moved forward to embrace her father.

He tucked Mindrea under his arm so that she was horizontal to the deck, and wrapped his other arm around his daughter. "Hey Kid, nice looking family you got here." He craned his neck to face level with Mindrea's and made a surprised face while staring at the dangling necklace. "Well dressed as well." He then, righted himself and gave his daughter a kiss on the forehead. "Hi sweetheart. You look great."

"Thanks Dad." She kissed him back. "Care to let my daughter land?" she chuckled.

"Who? Which one's your daughter?" He said while spinning around to look at the X-Wings powering down in the hold.

"GRANDPA !!!"

"Oh," he said. "You again." Han lowered his head once again to Mindrea's level as he still held her horizontal to the floor under his arm.

Even Jag was enjoying the show that his father-in-law was putting on for his daughter's amusement. Jag took a step forward and reached for Mindrea. "Here, let me assist you with your excess baggage." He said as Han handed the three-year-old off to him.

Han took a look at his son-in-law. "Looking good Fel. I would have expected more gray hair, or less hair altogether by this time. My daughter must be taking it easy on you."

He took a step forward and turned so that they were facing the same way, and leaned to Jag's ear. "Good to see you kid. I don't think I've seen my daughter this happy in a very long time. I would say this for everyone to hear, but I have a certain reputation to uphold." Han said discretely, but purposely loud enough for all to hear.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Greetings Fel’s” Said the familiar voice of the Jedi leader.
They all turned to see Luke and Mara walking towards them arm in arm.
“We, also, bring greetings from the Pertrod System, latest residence of Zonama Sekot.” Luke said with just a hint of pride in his voice.
“We just finished up a subspace relay with the Jade Shadow. They have arrived on time, and will be going planet side within the hour.” Mara confirmed. “Jacen, Ben, and the Lorrisay’s wanted to pass on their hello’s to all assembled.” Mara leaned down to Mindrea, who was smiling up to her intent on any news about her best friend. “And, Symerra made me promise to pass a message especially to you.”
Mara leaned closer and put her hand up to Mindrea’s ear to whisper. “Symerra wanted me to tell you that everything was going to plan, and she looks forward to your debriefing. She thought that your reports might be more impressive if you drew pictures to help explain what you observe.” Mara finished with a quick hug.
Jaina watched her Master whisper to her daughter. Mindrea’s eyes got big as saucers as she took in the secret. When Mara pulled away, she saw Mindrea nodding with excitement, and in agreement with the news.
Secrets…always secrets with my Aunt.” Jaina said with mock indignation.
Mara stood to her full height and swept forward to give her niece a hug. She did the same with Jag, and he surprised everyone by standing next to her with his arm draped over her shoulder quite comfortably. This was not missed by the ever observant Leia, who smiled at seeing her son-in-law so comfortable with his extended family.
As Jaina greeted her Uncle, she saw Master Kyp Durron strolling in his usual self-confident stride towards the group. On either side of him, and a full head taller walked the Barabels, Master Saba Sabatyne and her hatchling, Jedi Tesar Sabatyne. Kyp’s face lit up as soon as he saw Jaina. She couldn’t quite place it, but there was certainly something different in his façade.
Jaina grabbed Jag’s hand and gave it a squeeze. He looked down with inquisition, and followed her nod beyond the group. She had expected a noticeable reaction from her husband, but nothing like what transpired.
Jag recognized the figure immediately despite the increase of white in his still trademark mane. A smile erupted on his face and Jaina saw him mouth a comment silently to himself.
“Finally.” Jag said so that no one else could hear.
Without delay, he stepped out from the group and strolled purposefully and directly to Kyp, coming to an abrupt stop immediately in his path. He said nothing.
Kyp seemed a bit amused by the reaction of the formal, ever-confident Colonel that he remembered.
“Fel.” Kyp said with a bit of formality and mixed in enjoyment.
“It is good to see you my friend. We, have missed your company all these years.” Jag reached out to place his hand on the Jedi Master’s shoulder as he said this. Come, you must meet Mindrea. I’ve told her all about you.”
Kyp was stunned at the congeniality of the Chiss pilot. He was, even, more surprised to hear that Jag had made a special effort to tell his daughter about him. He glanced to Jaina again, and she was smiling at the exchange. She seemed as surprised as he felt.
Kyp looked back to Jag. Good Gods, he thought to himself. Stone face was smiling at him.
“What did you do with the Colonel Jagged Fel that I used to know? He would have given me a polite bow and a formal greeting. Then he would have critiqued my landing.” He turned around to his X-Wing as he said it.
Jag nodded his head at the words, and took him by the arm. “The one you remember has been hopelessly corrupted, and not a moment too soon.” He glanced to the group that seemed to be enjoying the exchange. “Come, say hello to everyone.”
Jaina watched him as he approached and couldn’t wipe the smile from her face. Jag’s behavior wasn’t totally unexpected. But, it was still a pleasant surprise. He was coming along nicely she thought with a hint of deviancy.
Kyp walked through the group, and politely acknowledged everyone in kind. Jaina had brought Mindrea over to her so that she stood in front, and Jaina had her hands on her shoulders. She bent down and whispered something in Mindrea’s ear as Kyp stopped in front of them both with a wide smile.
“We would like to see some identification.” Mindrea said looking up to the Jedi Master.
This struck Han as particularly funny, and he let out a hardy laugh at the comment. As was usual, Han’s laughter was infectious, and others joined in.
Kyp chuckled himself, glanced to Jaina, and bent down on a knee to address Mindrea. “I’ll tell you what. How about if I show you a holo of my little girl? She’s just about your age, and I assure you that she will vouch for me. Will that be sufficient?”
Mindrea thought it over. Kyp took the opportunity to glance up to a number of stunned faces, not the least of which was Jaina’s. Her expression, then, turned to hope as she wanted truly to believe that her partner had found happiness and a place to belong. She knew he would only be able to do so honestly if he had finally forgiven himself for the mistakes of his youth.
“I suppose that would be Okay.” Mindrea said as she looked back to her mother.
Jaina nodded with a smile and came down on a knee behind Mindrea to get a better view of the holocube Kyp was removing from the pocket of his flight suit. He activated the setting and out popped a holo of a little girl and her mother standing in a garden and smiling while holding a bouquet of freshly picked Asmondian Iris.
“Oh Kyp, they’re both so pretty. What are their names?” Jaina said with as she looked to him. She was overjoyed to see Kyp enamored with the image, and a distant smile across his face. This, she thought, was the real thing.
“Well, Great One…” Kyp laughed as he said it. “My daughter, who is going to be four shortly, we named Cinya. And my wonderful wife, Roviil would probably appreciate if I kept her age to myself.”
Jaina smiled to her friend as she opened to him in the Force like they used to do as a second nature.
I cannot tell you how happy I am for you. You have finally faced your demons. She sent to him.
I defeated them handily and have been rewarded many times over. He sent back.
The silence was broken by the most likely of suspects, but the words and demeanor surprised just about everyone.
“Well kid, I have to tell you. I’m truly very happy for you. I’ve told you many times over the years that you deserved (Han pointed to the repeating holo) something in your life that filled the portion of your heart that you set off limits. I was speaking from experience you know.” Han pulled Leia to his side and put his arm around her. “I know the man you are Kyp. And, judging from the smiles on those two lovely ladies, I’d like to believe that they are infinitely aware of that Kyp Durron as well.”
Han always had the penchant for surprising Kyp. This was no exception. He merely nodded gratefully in response. He didn’t think he could express anything verbally without emotions overtaking his words.
Jaina looked up to her father as well. She drank in his sincerity. Her mother seemed to be leaning to him to offer strength to get through what he wanted to say in the most effective of words. She did not miss the pride in her mother’s face.
Han chuckled. “Besides kid, you’ve always been an overachiever.”
That broke the moment, but in a good way. It seemed to bolster Kyp.
“Does anyone else here see the absolute irony of Han Solo, or any Solo for that matter, calling me the overachiever?”
The laughter followed immediately. Interspersed was the unique hissing of two very amused Barabels.
Jaina stood to seek out her friends, but before she could Mindrea’s voice raised above the din.
“Where are they?” She asked while staring directly to Kyp and pointing to the holo.
Kyp smiled to the little girl and reached out to touch her on the shoulder. “Currently, they are in route to our new home on Ossus.” He lowered his voice as if only talking to Mindrea. “My sources tell me that your best friend’s name is Symerra. Perhaps the two of you would do your best to make my little girl feel welcome. She had to leave her friends behind. (He paused) It would mean very much to me.”
Jaina almost laughed when she heard this come out of Kyp’s mouth. This was not the arrogant, aggressive Jedi Master that she remembered. This was a concerned father looking out for his little girl.
“Does she like flavored ice crystals?” Mindrea asked seriously.
A bit confused by the line of questioning, Kyp answered. “I believe she is partial to the Sun Fruit flavor.”
“Oh, then I’m sure we’ll be friends.” Mindrea responded without further consideration.
Jaina watched Kyp process the reasoning, and start shaking his head with a bit of a confused smile. It was good to see that the Jedi Master had finally come to the conclusion that he did not have all the answers. Odd, she thought, that a ‘weakness’ would make her friend seem so much ‘stronger.’
(Aboard the Jade Shadow; In synchonis orbit of Zonama Sekot; Petrod Minor System)
As the Jade Shadow entered orbit around Zonama Sekot. Tahiri appeared in the cockpit carrying a selection of robes in her arms.
“One size fits all.” She said while laying the clump on the console.
“Ah, my Apprentice, welcome to the wonderful world where the clothes wear you and not the other way around.” Jacen said as he looked to Ben with amusement.
His Apprentice was eyeing the pile of robeskin with curiosity.
Tahiri took the smallest of the living ‘robes’ and gave Symerra a little nod to follow her back to the sleeping quarters. They passed Sha entering the cockpit already wearing his new attire. Tahiri stopped momentarily and ran her fingers down his bare muscular arm. Sha had opted to avoid the necessity of sleeves in his tailored robeskin.
“Oh husband, you are tempting me.” She said with a playfully seductive tint.
“I thought you deserved to know what you will be fighting for.” He said just as coyly.
Sha, then, turned his attention to Symerra. “I think, my love, that your attire will be perfectly accentuated if you make sure that you wear your new necklace.”
Tahiri watched the excitement in her daughter’s face with vicarious euphoria. While Symerra didn’t understand the significance of a Lambent Crystal and the adorning shell pulled from a live creature, Tahiri was sure that it would not be missed by their hosts. She thought to herself that she must remember to compliment Ben on his choice in that regard. She wasn’t so sure that the selection was accidental.
Sha greeted Jacen with a bit of a smile. “I would suggest that we make an effort to secure planet side transport in a Sekotan living ship. Landing in the Jade Shadow, as beautiful as it is, would get us off on the wrong foot, I’m afraid. I, also, recommend that we create hidden pockets in our robeskins so that we can conceal our lightsabers. We can obtain them in the event of an emergency. However, for the most part, respecting their beliefs will assist us in securing their trust.”
Jacen nodded with each point Sha suggested. “I don’t suppose you have a spare Amphistaff on your person?”
Sha smiled as he extended his left arm. Two vipers curled down his arm. “One or two Master Solo?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

While Jacen and Ben shaped their robeskins to conform to their sizes, Sha opened up the comm. and hailed the planet below. He received a response from Tekli instantaneously. The Chandra-Fan seemed quite pleased if the tone of her voice was any indication.

“Sha, when I heard that Master Luke was assigning this mission to Tahiri and you I was quite ecstatic, I am not ashamed to say.”

Sha smiled at the diminutive tone and the excitement of the small Jedi. He noticed that Tekli had ‘gone native’ to some extent. She sat in the holoimage wearing a robeskin with curious markings, and her small, furry forehead had the beginnings of a braid.

“Greetings my friend.” Sha chuckled. “You look at home in your current appearance.”

The Chandra-Fan smiled, which usually came off as the look of a scheme in the works. “I will not deny that I love my time with the Yuuzhan Vong. It is, not only, educational, but a welcome respite from the mundane.”

“It agrees with you, my friend. Now, what do you recommend for my traveling companions and myself?” Sha paused. “It was our consensus that our arrival should be in that of a Sekotan living ship. We have, already, taken care of our wardrobe in the form of robeskins.”

The Chandra smiled at the news. “Precisely why I am happy to see Tahiri and you as a part of this.” Tekli turned serious. “There will be some opposition to this meeting. However, if I know you, you are prepared for these potential…(she paused) hardships.”

Sha grinned. “We are properly prepared, and, embarrassingly, a bit anxious at the prospect.”

Another face filled the holoimage in front of Sha. It was the elongated countenance of Harrar. The pronounced deep scar on his neck and the splits in his lips dominated the familiar image. Interestingly, a smile adorned his face. “Sha, my friend. We held our breath that Jeedai Skywalker would make you a part of this.”

“Greetings Priest Harrar.” Sha, immediately switched to fluent Yuuzhan Vong. “ My mate and I are not the only delegates accepting your gracious and valued invitation.” Sha took on a formality in his tone. “We are led in this quest by Master Jeedai Jacen Solo, and his Apprentice, son to Jeedai Luke Skywalker, Ben Skywalker.”

Sha noted the pleased surprise in Harrar’s reaction to these revelations. “Excellent…excellent.” He responded in rather solid basic.

Sha smiled at the response to his words. “Priest Harrar, we, also, bring with us our daughter, Symerra Lorrisay. It is our endeavor to introduce her to much of what my mate and I hold dear.”

Sha was surprised by the informality that graced Harrar’s response. “Sha, my friend. We are honored by her presence. She,…Symerra, will be my own guest. Allow me to be her personal guide.” He smiled again in the holoimage. “Sha, bringing one so young and defenseless to us will go far in convincing our skeptics that you bring sincerity and trust with you.”

“We would be honored for you to serve as her host.” Sha smiled warmly. “But, do not deceive yourself. Our daughter is…(he paused)..far from defenseless.”

He noted the nod to Tekli by Harrar.

“Sha, a Sekotan ship will arrive momentarily. We will meet with you briefly to discuss some…(she paused) details. Also, the Magister, is anxious to welcome you before we travel to the Southern hemisphere for the basis of your visit.” The Chandra-Fan glanced to Harrar. “We will see you soon.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Aboard the Indigo Sky; Yavin 4 System)
Kyp watched Mindrea walk from the hold with a grandparent on either side. He looked to Jaina with a sly grin.
“Gods help us all. There is another one traveling the galaxy.” He said, referring to the resemblance to her mother.
Jag nodded at the thought. “Yes. Sleepless nights are plentiful in her wake.” He joked causing a raise of an eyebrow from Kyp in amusement. “The added crisis lies in the fact that you have prolonged your own lineage and doubled the calamity.”
“Fel. You are much more entertaining that you used to be. I cursed myself for liking you back then. Right this moment, I am considering the possibility that I have, somehow, landed in an alternative universe.”
“I am afraid, Master Durron, that you are witnessing the unfortunate byproduct of prolonged exposure to two women of significant influence and power.” Jag looked back over his shoulder. “I will leave you two to catch up. Mindrea is likely to dupe her grandfather out of his life savings if I am not there to stop it.”
Kyp laughed. “I noticed Mindrea’s hold on poor Han.”
Jaina chose to observe the discussion between the two, rather than participate. She was not disappointed. When they turned to her she was shaking her head and beaming.
“So help me, I must be a glutton for punishment. I’ve missed you Kyp. But, I think I’ve missed the hopeless combination of the both of you most of all.”
With that, Jag raised a hint of a grin and proceeded to deliver a formal bow and depart. Over his shoulder he glanced to Kyp. “Formal enough for you Durron?” He saw that Kyp was amused by Jag’s reversion to the old way. “It is good to see you again…I mean that most sincerely.” Jag added as he entered the hatch leading to the rest of the ship.
Kyp watched him disappear and turned to look down to Jaina. He just smiled and shook his head.
Jaina raised an eyebrow, and when Kyp said nothing she asked. “What?”
“You.” He simply replied.
“Kyp, my recollection, and mind you it has been over six years, was of an arrogant, self-assured, know-it-all who was quite satisfied when given the opportunity to hear himself speak. One word cryptic implications do not become you. Spill it.”
Kyp sighed, in a good way. “You are ‘walking light’ Jaina.” He considered his own words after he heard them out loud. “Yes, that’s how I would describe you. ‘Walking light’.”
Jaina knew the point he was trying to make so she nodded. “I’ve had quite a bit of assistance in my journey from devastation towards bliss.” She looked up to the Master Jedi. “If you are still curious as to why Jag acts as he does to you, you need only know that I confided to him your efforts on my behalf.”
“Ahhhhh, I see.” Kyp nodded in understanding. “And, I understand that there is a certain Jedi named Lorrisay who we both owe our conscience.”
Jaina did not miss the seriousness that seemed to suddenly envelope Kyp in the admittance.
She smiled to Kyp. “I am reluctant to put you in the same room as Sha. One of you is quite enough for the rest of us.”
Kyp took in her attempt to lighten the conversation but pushed on. “Seriously, Jaina, Master Luke saw fit to briefly fill me in just before we left Ossus. He told me that Lorrisay had been successful in significantly lessening the ‘damage’ from your short flirt with the Darkness. Rather than providing the details, he suggested that I speak with you. He, also, suggested that I spend some time with Jedi Lorrisay, and he could fill me in conclusively.”
Jaina nodded as Kyp spoke to confirm what Master Luke had outlined. “Sha is, well, for lack of a better term…he is family.” She paused to organize her thoughts. “You recall the Hapan scientist who I recruited to experiment with the coral implants.”
Kyp cringed at the memory. “Yes, of course.”
“Well, Sinsor Kahl, the scientist, is a short, stocky, dark haired individual with no facial hair.” Jaina waited for it to register.
Kyp tilted his head and saw the moment the contradiction arrived. “No, he was tall, and had sandy hair with a, rather, sloppy beard.”
Jaina smiled. “That was Sha, impersonating Sinsor Kahl. The experiments on the prisoner, Crimpler, were mostly smoke and mirrors for our benefit.”
“Wait.” Kyp stared down Jaina like a dart. “You are saying that the experiments never took place…” He paused. “…No, they had to have occurred. We secured the necessary information to cross wire the gravitational signatures of the Yuuzhan Vong ships.” Kyp looked to Jaina as if she had swallowed a tale without consideration for the facts.
“Trust me Kyp. You need to hear the account directly from Sha. I assure you that it is all true.” The look of sincerity she gave was piercing. “Sha will be joining us in about four days time. When he does he will show you everything.”
“Show me?” There was clear confusion in the comment.
Jaina laughed. “You are in for an education. Sha has some unique abilities that you have never experienced. He will, simply, show you.”
Kyp still had a look of skepticism, but he trusted Jaina’s judgment. “If what you say is true, I owe him.”
Jaina nodded. “We, both, owe him much. But, do not get the idea that you can repay him in any fashion. He won’t let you.” Jaina smiled at the thought of Kyp meeting Sha for the first time. She would want to be there for that little event.
“Come, let me show you our ‘monstrosity’ of a ship.” Throwing Kyp’s words back at him from earlier. “And, I have some Gourmet Bakurian Caf’ ready for brewing. We will find a nice quiet corner so you can tell me all about Cinya and Roviil.”
Kyp was snapped out of the past as those names solicited a smile. “Lead on, Oh Great One. I am yours to command.”
Excellent work, Trepidation!
You've really brought all these characters to life. They just leap off the screen as I read this fic. I love the banter, and particularly the way you write about Jag's transformation from "rigid Chiss" to a "Rebel type". The 3-year-old "recruits" are also so funny and touching.
Interesting storyline as well. I do wonder what's going on, and I'm sure you'll do a beautiful job of telling us.
Well done!
CHAPTER SIX
(Aboard planetary transport the Cascade; Petrod System; Zonama Sekot)
Foritnan, the Sekotan pilot, landed the living ship (christened Cascade) in the middle of a field teeming with wild flowers and fern plants. The three Jedi had enjoyed Ben’s curious elation as he studied each facet of the sleek, beautiful living ship on the way down. He had just started to digest the wonder of it all when the hatch opened to a wave of life through the Force.
“Your Apprentice appears to be dangerously close to an overdose.” Sha whispered to Jacen.
“He is not the only one.” The Jedi Master responded.
Sha looked to where Jacen was staring. Next to Tahiri, Symerra had her eyes closed as she, quite obviously, was experiencing the planet through the Force.
Tahiri saw the two Jedi looking to the seat beside her and glanced down to her daughter. She, then, joined with her daughter and witnessed what the little girl had chosen to inhale. It was the best part about visiting Zonama Sekot…the very first rush of life. An invigorating sense of serenity and strength enveloped her at the same time. She felt the purity of life that seemed to cloud in any other locality.
Symerra’s eyes opened as did a smile. “I like it here.” She said with a bit of awe.
Tahiri glanced to Sha, who had a similar smile staring back to her. “Your father and I were married here.” She said without turning from Sha.
The little girl nodded as if understanding their reasons for choosing Zonama Sekot for that purpose and disappeared back into the Force as her eyes slowly closed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Zonama Sekot; Petrod System)

Jacen and Sha walked down the ramp of the Cascade and were greeted by the smiling face of Tekli. She waited for them to come forward and greeted them warmly.

“Harrar will be with us shortly. He is meeting briefly with the Magister I believe. In the interim, why don’t you take in the essence of the planet and stretch your legs.” She said.

The others joined them at the bottom of the ramp and together they walked around the field with no particular destination in mind.

“What do you think my Apprentice?” Jacen said, anxious to experience the planet for the first time through Ben’s senses.

“It’s familiar. I was younger than Symerra when I was here before. But, surprisingly, I remember it rather well.” Ben said with conviction. “For example, those mountains there. I could have drawn the shape of the peaks when I was home on Ossus. It’s a strange sensation.”

“And you young lady?” Jacen turned to look down at Symerra who was holding her mother’s hand while she walked with her eyes closed to better experience the sensations.

Symerra opened her eyes and looked up to Jacen with a smile. “Oh, I like it. I can feel everything.” She said with wonder.

Then, Symerra focused to the west and rose up on her toes as if trying to get a better vantage point. “There is someone coming.”

The group turned as one to the direction she was looking. Coming over a rise in the field, not 20 meters away, were two figures. One was a tall, thin figure wearing a robe similar to their own. He carried a lengthy walking stick and his face carried a number of symmetrical tattoos and scars. The most prominent was a deep scar to the neck. The other was a boy with sandy brown hair and a noticeable confidence in his step.

Jacen had wondered whether Sekot would grace them with a visit during their stay. He had hoped that she would. He wanted his Apprentice to meet her. The fact that she had chosen the form of Ben’s grandfather at a similar age was extremely special and a bit surreal to digest.

The two figures smiled in unison as they came to a stop before the group. The boy, acting quite beyond his years, gracefully took a step back and extended his hand towards Harrar. He still held a smile. The implication was that he was turning over the greetings to Harrar.

In broken basic Harrar said. “Welcome Jeedai. As representative of the Yuuzhan Vong High Council, and spokesperson of our people, we appreciatively thank you for accepting our invitation and we are honored to offer you our hospitality through the culmination of your visit.” Harrar took a deep breath as if the previous was a difficult task. “The formalities having been dispatched, I would simply say ‘welcome my friends’.”

Sha and Tahiri looked to Jacen to imply that he would be the leader of their envoy. Harrar was quick to pick up on the message and half turned to Jacen in response. They noticed a partial smile and a quick nod from the Priest. He concurred with the protocol and the choice.

“Harrar, High Priest, Spokesperson, and representative of the Yuuzhan Vong High Council; it is, truly, our honor to accept the invitation of your people. The Jedi value all life and lives in this galaxy and beyond. There are no exceptions. We look forward to what these next few days may deliver. If nothing else, there is communication. That is, always, the first step towards understanding.” Jacen said with a slow nod to Harrar.

Harrar nodded in return and turned to the boy who patiently waited through the formalities. At this sign, Sekot stepped forward.

“Hello Jacen. It has been quite a while since our last meeting. It is good to see you again. And Sha, Tahiri, I see that marriage agrees with you both. But…” He turned to Symerra and Ben. “…I believe there are new faces here that I am anxious to meet.”

Jacen took a step to the side and couldn’t resist a bit of a smile as he turned towards Ben. “Sekot, I would like you to meet my Apprentice. The young man before you is Ben Skywalker. He is the son of Luke Skywalker.”

Ben took a step forward and formally nodded to Sekot. He, then, did a half turn and did the same to Harrar. Sha heard a near gasp from Tahiri in response. It was remarkable he thought. It was not as noticeable when they were separated. But, when Sha could see Sekot, in the form of Anakin Skywalker, and Ben Skywalker in the same frame, the resemblance was uncanny. The profile was a perfect match. The shape and shade of the eyes were identical. The drop of the chin was a near copy. Even the slight rise of the bridge of his nose was similar.

Sha looked to Jacen, and he had noticed it as well.

“Ben, do you recall that I had spoken to you about how Sekot had communicated to me in different forms of those who had graced this world?”

Ben turned to Jacen and nodded. “Yes, you said the most common form was that of Vergere.”

Jacen smiled, as did Sekot. It was obvious that, even Harrar, was aware of what was coming next, and seemed just as amused as the others.

“Who do you suppose the form is that Sekot now carries?” Jacen asked while watching his Apprentice.

Ben took a long draw at the countenance of the boy. He contemplated his answer and turned to Jacen. “He resembles me. And, I was here once before. But, there are differences between us. The likeness is noticeable, but not (he sheepishly looked to Sekot)...perfect.”

Jacen laughed, followed by Harrar. Symerra had moved closer to look at the two boys in front of her. “Ben, the form before you is Anakin Skywalker at a similar age to your own. It is the form of your Grandfather.”

Ben was dumbfounded. He turned quickly to Sekot to take in another appraisal. His mouth remained open in surprise. His left hand moved up to feel his own face as if that would make the impossible more believable. Jacen was laughing as this occurred. Harrar seemed to enjoy the surprise as well as he stepped closer to compare the two. Symerra, losing all sense of apprehension merely stated what was on her mind.

“Stand beside each other. It would be easier to compare.” Came the orders from the little trooper.

“Ahhhh, I believe I might know your name.” said Harrar to Symerra as she moved closer to Ben.

Symerra stopped dead in her tracks and turned to look up towards what should have been an intimidating sight to a little girl. She had a look of surprise.

“I believe you are the one named Symerra.” Harrar said while giving the appearance of hearing the name whispered in his ear.

Symerra nodded in the affirmative with a look of confusion. “How do you know my name?”

Sha cringed as the question came out more as an accusation than a question.

Harrar ignored the question and tilted his head a bit as he looked back to her. “That is a beautiful Lambent that graces your neck young one. May I take a closer look?”

Symerra glanced quickly back to her father, who simply nodded and gave her a wink.

She reached down to the necklace and pulled the stone centered in the shell out from her robeskin for Harrar to have a better look. Harrar smiled as she did, and bent down to see.

He smiled to Symerra as he came down to her level. “Watch closely.” He said. He lightly stroked the top of the Lambent, and then cupped his hands around the gem to block out all light. Symerra gasped at what she saw.

The Lambent centered in the shell came to life as a spread of yellow light shown against the inside of his hands. She looked straight back to Harrar.

“How did you do that?” She said with awe.

“It is a Lambent Crystal little one. It is what they do.” He laughed at the face this news solicited. “Before you leave our world, I will, personally, show you all the colors of the rainbow in such gems. Would you like that?”

Symerra nodded. Then she bolted upright. She abruptly turned to Sekot.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I am Symerra. I forgot to say hello.”

This innocence, only available to such an age caught the others off guard. It wasn’t long before the laughter rose across the field and reached the ears of Tekli, who was observing from a perch near the Sekotan living ship. She smiled inwardly. It appeared as if the envoy was off to a fine start.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The envoy boarded the Cascade after Sekot had the opportunity to meet Symerra in earnest. However, just before they left, Sekot called to the party walking up the ship’s ramp.
“Good luck to you my friends.” He exclaimed causing everyone to turn to the voice.
Sekot acknowledged their attention and went on. “There is something wonderful happening here. The Sekotans and the Yuuzhan Vong were separated by a hemisphere when they first arrived. It was out of necessity.” Sekot smiled and focused his attention to Harrar. “But, do not think that I have not noticed the cooperation that has, naturally, developed." He turned to Ben. "As you tear down the barriers of selfish pursuits, you eventually find the goals of mutual endeavor.”
Jacen took in the words of the planet guardian. He was sure that the last part of it was meant for Ben. He glanced to his Apprentice who was staring intensely to Sekot. Apparently, Ben had the same impression.
“I will see you before you depart. Come to this spot before you return home so that we may talk some more.” With that, Sekot turned on his heel and moved off across the field.
Once aboard, Harrar turned to Sha and Tahiri, who had Symerra between them.
“I am afraid that you have a bit of a challenge ahead of the both of you.” Harrar said with a hint of warning. “As I informed you, there are factions within our people who want nothing to do with the outside world. They want even less to do with the Jeedai.”
Sha glanced to Tahiri and looked to Harrar with a nod. “We have anticipated that possibility. Should it be necessary, we are prepared to act as Vek nat Rak.”
Harrar smiled at Sha when he formalized the issue with Yuuzhan Vong words for “Protectors of the Word.”
Harrar paused with a sigh. “Fortunately, I don’t think that will be necessary. However, I have been able to work out a compromise that may satisfy most detractors of your visit.”
He looked to Tahiri. “Tell me, does your knowledge of our culture include the term ‘Zem hak van Dak’?”
Sha saw Tahiri searching her memory. Perhaps it was something that the shaper memories had experienced or heard of in any event. Sha knew the words that Harrar had said, but the significance was eluding him.
“Walk of Faith?” Sha finally said as he watched his wife shake her head slowly.
“Yes, Walk of Faith is the literal translation. However, there is much underlying meaning. I will try to explain.” Harrar said with a bit of a sigh.
“When the most high in our warrior class were nominated to positions of great honor, they had to be tested on their prowess, their strength, and even their ability to think beyond their training. This had to be done in such a way so that only the best of the best would succeed.” He looked to the two Jedi.
“The only Zem hak van Dak rituals that I have had the opportunity to witness were aboard our World Ships as we crossed into this galaxy. However, there is writing of such rituals taking place on our original home world.” Harrar said this while looking out the port viewer towards the surface of Zonama Sekot.
Sha nodded as he caught the significance of Zonama Sekot, a planet born of their home world and the invocation of an ancient ritual to honor that fact.
Tahiri was more direct. “What will this present Zem hak van Dak entail?”
Harrar looked to both of them individually before settling on Tahiri. “The council has declared that your designated Vek nat Rak will disembark ten kilometers from our destination. From there, you will travel by foot to the village. In that distance, you will meet five of our best warriors. Each will signify a Vaksa[gate].” He paused. “You must defeat each of them in combat to move onto the next Vaksa, or gate I believe you call it.”
Tahiri was nodding as if she understood, and did not appear particularly concerned. Sha was a bit more cautious.
“There is more, isn’t there?” he said when Harrar turned to him.
Harrar sighed. “Yes, I am afraid that there is.” He went on. “At the boundary of our village, you will be met by five warriors that will serve as a single Vaksa. You must defeat them all to gain entrance.”
Tahiri surprised Harrar with her next question. “What follows that?” She said without emotion.
Harrar looked to her with a bit of surprise in response to her confidence. But, he remained guarded in his response. “Provided you are successful in passing these gates, I will be there to formally introduce you to the High Council. Still, there will be detractors within the village. However, we believe that besting our most tried warriors would convince many of your intent, sincerity and worthiness.”
Sha looked to Jacen and Ben, who were following the conversation intensely. He could, already, see his wife gathering her resolve internally. He turned to Harrar.
“Priest Harrar. We accept the Zem hak van Dak without reservation. However, we will not kill your warriors. We did not come here to take lives. They will be incapacitated such that we can move onto the next Vaksa. Will that be sufficient to satisfy the High Council?”
“It will.” Harrar said with curiosity. “However, I don’t think that these warriors will be cooperative in that endeavor.”
It was Tahiri that finished Sha’s thought. “Priest Harrar. They will have nothing to say in the matter.” Tahiri glanced to Sha and smiled derisively. “My husband and I will arrive in the village unscathed. Your Vaskas’ will not.” She turned with Symerra and moved to the rear of the ship to start preparing for the journey.
Sha smiled at his wife in return and held his smile when he looked to Harrar. “I have learned that when my wife is determined, it is best to give her what she wants. This, I’m afraid, is no exception.” He went back to join his wife in preparation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sha found Tahiri sitting on an out cropping of the living ship with Symerra balancing on her lap and staring to her mother. He could hear her talking to the little girl.

“Of course we will be careful. I will have Daddy to protect me. He will have me to protect him. We are quite a good team together you know.”

“I know. But, I promised Master Solo that I would make sure that you were careful.”

“I promise,” she said with a smile. “OK?” Tahiri said in all seriousness.

“OK.”

Sha cleared his throat as he entered. “Well, well. If it isn’t the beautiful and resourceful Lorrisay women.” He winked to his wife and saw a fierce determination building up inside of her.

Sha paused and looked to Symerra. “I promise too, Love.” He smiled. “We will see you in the village. And, you will be cruising above us so you can watch the whole thing. You will have to keep an eye on things up here while we are gone, Intelligence Officer Lorrisay.”

Symerra, remembering her assignment with Sha’s prodding nodded with a serious face. Tahiri smiled up to Sha after seeing the change in demeanor of her daughter.

“OK spy. Let’s get moving. Amphistaffs, Blorash Jelly, and a few surprises that should assist us rather nicely are waiting to be employed.” Tahiri said as Symerra hopped off her lap and proceeded back to the cockpit of the ship. She turned around after a few steps and jumped forward to land directly in front of Sha. Without comment she gave him a tremendous hug and looked up. “Be careful Daddy.” Sha gave her a confident wink and sent her on her way with a playful little pat.

Sha, then, looked to Tahiri and smiled. “You are looking forward to this, aren’t you?”

Tahiri just smiled back with a touch of malice.

CHAPTER 7

(Southern Hemisphere; Zonama Sekot)

The Sekotan ship landed softly on the edge of a new forest deep in the southern hemisphere of Zonama Sekot. The trees could have been mistaken for ancient growth had those observing it not known that the entire southern hemisphere of the planet had significant damage only a decade earlier. Somehow, the Yuuzhan Vong, working in tandem with Sekot had brought back life to this part of the world.

Harrar wasted no time descending the ramp. On his way out of the smooth hatch he turned to the others and said, “I will wait for you at the edge of the clearing.”

“Are you sure about this?” Jacen said eyeing Tahiri and Sha.

“Quite.” Sha said without emotion as he checked his living packs that hung from the side of his person.

Tahiri came up behind Jacen and rested her hand on his shoulder. “Jacen, we will be fine. Sha and I train daily in these tactics. We, both, have studied the different fighting techniques employed by the individual Domains. On their own, each is easily defeated by exploiting the weaknesses of their defenses.”

“That does not even take into account our ability to use the Force in our own advantage.” Sha added. “However, we plan to do so sparingly.”

Jacen nodded slowly. He was aware of the unorthodox styles of the two Jedi. Tahiri had supplemented her original training of the Yavin 4 Jedi Academy with Yuuzhan Vong style moves implanted into her being by the Domain Kwaad shapers. Her sparring partner, and husband, was a bit more accomplished and tried. However, Jacen had taken in one of their sparring sessions and came away wondering what happened to the rambunctious little blonde haired girl he used to know. Her talents with an Amphistaff left him shaking his head.

Sha had studied under his Aunt Mara and sister Jaina in what most of the other Jedi joked to be the ‘training of a sadist.’ They were relentless in the trials that they threw to him to over come. Additionally, during his stint in GFFA Intelligence, he had been the only operative to infiltrate Yuuzhan Vong warrior castes for extended periods of time. He had, physically, participated in challenging rank while among them, which, ultimately led to death fights against tried warriors. The fact that Sha stood before Jacen at this moment attested to his abilities. Sha's chosen Jedi fighting style was similarly unique. He had opted for training in dun moch… This type style was primarily employed by the Sith. In addition to an aggressive posture, it included the use of taunts, jests and other verbose efforts to rattle the opponent. The style was most effective when the fighter had the ability to distract the opponent by levitating heavy objects while engaged. Sha had that ability ever since Hapes. His strength in the Force was on a different level.

However, the one thing that Jacen used to bolster his confidence in the two Jedi was, simply, a series of reports written by Sha near the end of the Yuuzhan Vong War. Sha had recognized that different Domains fought in an extremely predictable fashion. He espoused that if you could identify the Domain of the warrior, then you knew every single move that he had. They used no creativity in their fighting. As a result, the same weaknesses appeared with each warrior of that same Domain. The fierce competition among the various Domains made their effectiveness worse if warriors from different Domains ever found themselves fighting along side each other. That gave him the confidence to let Sha and Tahiri proceed. That and the undeniable fact that the Force was telling him that it was necessary.

“OK. But, I reserve to the right to pull the power chord at any time. Understood?” Jacen said with conviction.

Tahiri slapped Jacen on the back. “Understood Master Solo.” Then she smiled. “Don’t be too hasty. You know my husband's propensity for…(she paused) setting up his opponent.”

Sha laughed at his wife’s comment. “Now wife…do not mock my ability to master patience and your own shortcomings in that regard.”

With that, the two turned in unison and bowed deeply to Jacen and Ben. “Masters’.”

Then they both kneeled to either side of Symerra and kissed her on opposite cheeks. “See you soon Love.” Sha said quickly as Tahiri touched foreheads with the girl.

As they strode purposefully to the ramp they noticed the smile growing on Ben’s face.

“Master?” He said with inquisition.

Jacen and Ben, both, heard the laughs of the two Jedi as they bound down the ramp towards Harrar.

Harrar was leaning against the trunk of a large tree that appeared indigenous to the planet, but just a shade off. He held a smile as they approached.

“You wear no vonduun crab armor.” He observed.

Tahiri smiled back. “They smell, and restrict my movement.”

“And my wife calls me a coward when I wear it against her.” Sha added with a smile.

Harrar looked confused. “You train in Yuuzhan Vong combat tactics?”

“Yes Priest Harrar. We enjoy the fluidity and the art of it.”

“I see.” He said as a grin started to grow. “What styles have you studied? Which Domains?”

Now it was Tahiri’s chance to surprise the Priest. “All of them.” She said matter of factly, as if it was commonplace.

“I see.” Harrar placed a hand on each of the Jedi’s shoulders. “I think I shall enjoy this. These warriors are representative of many of my own detractors and impediments over the last few years. It has been frustrating. I believe that their own personal judgment day is upon them.”

Harrar took a good look at each of the two Jedi and then pulled away. He straightened to his full impressive height and removed all emotion from his face.

Tek ak Za Mavik! [Fight strong and true]” he said with assurance.

Tek a da Zirk van Yuuzhan Vong [We fight for the future of our friends, the Yuuzhan Vong ]” Sha responded with conviction.

Both Jedi watched the Priest stand straighter still as the words registered. He took a second to take in the faces of his friends and moved directly to the hatch of the Sekotan Ship.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(The First VASKA)
“Two or three?” Sha asked his wife, already knowing the answer.
“What?” Tahiri asked somewhat confused.
“Well, if you take the first one. Then, you will have the third and the fifth as well. That leaves me the second and the third.” Sha smiled as Tahiri understood.
She smiled back. “I would take the first. But, you will need me fresh for the final five before the village. I think I know how we are going to get around that daunting task.”
Sha faked overwhelming shock. “Three years later and I am still being surprised by my wife. Incidentally, how are you enjoying our second honeymoon?”
Tahiri laughed at the prospect. She then headed forward into the underbrush of the forest. “Come on Spy. We have work to do. The first one is yours. Try not to mess it up.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sha and Tahiri had been walking for just under a kilometer. They could see the outline of the Cascade trailing them above the forest canopy. He noticed the scowl in his wife’s face when she saw that the ship would continue to shadow them. She did not like the public announcement of their approach being so obvious.

Sha laughed at her.

“What?” She said with a bit of bite.

“You see the ship as a hindrance to a stealth approach.” He said.

“And you don’t?” She asked confused.

“Ordinarily, yes. But suppose one of us…for example me…ran on ahead while the ship stayed at your pace. I tend to think that our first Vaksa might be in for a surprise as he concentrates on the ship, and the beautiful warrior it escorts on the ground.”

A smile spread across her lips. “You see me as beautiful even in a robeskin. How could I say no to that? Off with you husband. Go catch me something for dinner.”

Sha wasted no time. He hurdled forward into the forest. Tahiri raised an eyebrow at the quickness and surefootedness he portrayed. Despite the danger, she was enjoying this. Her husband was in his element, and she knew the deep enjoyment of sorts he felt when he fought along side her. She felt the same calling.

Tahiri used her Vong Sense to gain a bearing on the first Vaksa. She need not bother, however. Sha had, already, discovered him by listening to the forest sounds. There was a vacancy of life beyond pile of rotted timber just at the edge of a clearing. She thought about the set up.

Yes, a warrior confident in their abilities would want a maximum of space to best institute their talents, she thought.

Good my wife. What else? Came thoughts through the Force from Sha.

Thud bugs. A clearing promises an easier target with fewer encumbrances. She thought to her husband.

Excellent. She felt the feelings of pride and love envelop her in the Force.

“OK spy boy, let’s open the Vaksa.” she said to herself.

Tahiri moved to the very edge of the closest part of the clearing and proceeded to dust off the top of a rock before placing herself in a meditation position and closing her eyes. A smile graced her lips as she felt her husband move into a hunting mode. She would not distract him now, although she wanted to offer her reassurance through the Force.

Open your eyes or you are going to miss it. She felt through the Force.

The warrior had moved out from under the rotting timber and was, slowly, making his way along the south side of the clearing. It was, clearly, his intention to come up from behind her. He had made it about half way before a whistle pierced the natural sounds of the forest. The noise startled the warrior and Tahiri at the same time. Her eyes flew open towards the sound.

Standing directly on the rotting wood pile that had previously hidden the warrior was Sha. He had a deviant smile spread across his face as he held a sleeve of packed Thud bugs in his right hand swinging them back and forth.

“You forgot something.” He said in fluent Yuuzhan Vong.

The warrior had decided on traveling light to sneak up on Tahiri. As a result, he left a number of his weapons, including the Thud bugs, behind in original concealment. Tahiri remained in her position of meditation as she smiled to Sha. “You can have them. I am content with my current load.”

With that, the warrior rushed into the clearing and stopped. His reaction had been instinctive, and now, he had to decide which Jeedai to attack first. Sha knew he would come for him first. The Yuuzhan Vong taught their warriors to attack strength. The warrior would assume that since he was bigger and a male, that the petite blond Jeedai could wait.

Sha didn’t let him reason it through. He simply waltzed out into the center of the clearing and smiled widely to the warrior. Sha took in his opponent. He was tall. He was strong. He was covered in various tattoos and scars, and had a significant number of implants.

“Domain …Shai.” Sha said conversationally to his wife.

“Yes.” She replied. “I see.”

“What does that tell you?” Sha queried.

“It tells me, dear one, that you best protect your left, and he will try to exploit his considerable size by charging you like a Tyronian Madvin.”

Sha had just started to chuckle at his wife’s comment when the warrior lunged forward directly to Sha’s position. Sha didn’t wait for him to arrive. Instead, he charged in the exact same fashion. Tahiri connected to her husband in the Force and had just enough time to smile at Sha’s approach to the behemoth charging him. This should be amusing, and short.

As they approached each other a full speed, Sha watched for the warrior to make his lunge. Once he left his feet, there would be no way for the warrior to alter his trajectory. He caught it in an instant. The warrior dove forward to strengthen his momentum. He was going for a tackle across the upper body with his couffe. As expected, the warrior leaned left in his dive so as to recover in a roll after the initial hit.

Sha, immediately let his feet take over his body and slid forward feet first into the warriors dive. Concentrating his full attention, he focused on the feet of the now, airborne Yuuzhan Vong. He saw the curious look in the eye of the warrior for less than a nanosecond as he slid, almost horizontally underneath him. Then, at the last second, Sha reached out with his arms which he had used to balance his slide and grabbed the implants on both ankles of the confused warrior. With perfect timing, Sha dug his boots into the ground and pushed up as his hands grasped like a vice on the warrior’s ankles. The result was as Tahiri had predicted. It was amusing, and it was short.

The momentum held by the warrior stopped abruptly, as Sha leveraged his entire weight up from under him. Sha, himself was nearly two meters in height with considerable muscle girth. As he pulled out with his ankles, the force of the change of direction caused the warrior to arc toward the ground. The quickness of the change in direction gave the warrior no opportunity to break his fall. Instead, his battle scarred head absorbed the blow. His last view of the entire event was the ground rushing up to meet his tattooed forehead in a mammoth blow. He was out cold before he could fathom that he was facing a worthy opponent.

Sha checked on the warrior and nodded in relief that he was alive but unconscious. Finding an Asper Bush, he cut some of the pain dulling plant and placed it neatly next to a water portable at the side of the unmoving warrior. Then he, gracefully, stood to the side of the action and bowed deeply to his wife.

His wife smiled as she rose from her meditation position and bowed in return.

“Would you care to proceed through this curious Vaksa. Why they have such things in the middle of a forest one could only guess.” Sha swept his hand forward to the other side of the clearing as he spoke.

Tahiri straightened her robeskin and proceeded to feign a sense of Royalty as she came towards Sha, turning her cheek for a kiss as she passed.

“I will remember that move for our next sparring session.” She said warily.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Aboard the Cascade)
Jacen watched the short battle from above. They had lost sight of Sha sometime earlier. Remarkably, he appeared in the clearing as a warrior shot into view. He couldn’t help but laugh at the quick dispatch of the same warrior mere moments later. He turned to his Apprentice who was gaping at the result.
“That was rather efficient.” He said.
Ben looked back to Jacen. He nodded, but the look of surprise was still in his face. He glanced over to Harrar, who, also, looked impressed with what transpired. The Priest collected his thoughts.
“That was no novice. That was Zat’Mak of the Shai Domain. He is well respected among all Domains for his level of prowess. As I understand it, he had requested the first slot as a Vaksa because he did not want to miss the opportunity should some other warrior be triumphant.” Then Harrar chuckled. “When news reaches the village that the Jeedai have passed the first Vaksa so quickly, there will be a growing interest.”
Ben turned to the conversation after losing sight of the two Jedi below. He glanced directly to Jacen as if asking permission to speak. Jacen nodded in noting the seriousness that had returned to Ben.
“Priest Harrar. Zat’Mak of the Domain Shai could have made the combat much more interesting by going against his instincts and his training.” Ben said solidly.
This raised an eyebrow in Jacen. He knew the point that his Apprentice was trying to make. Rather than jumping in, he decided to see what might transpire.
Harrar turned to Ben. “Explain.” He said with guarded interest.
Ben collected his thoughts. “Domain Shai is the primary of the Warrior Domains. They are respected among all your people for that very role. Yet, that is, also, the weakest part of them. When they fight, they fight conclusively. When they attack, there is nothing more than that singularity of the attack. Jedi Sha knew what the warrior would do even before he thought of it. And, that is simply because he did not think, he acted solely on his training.”
Jacen watched Ben and saw how resolved he was in his comments. He did not care that Harrar might take offense to a boy being so blunt in his critique.
Harrar surprised them both. “Interesting young Skywalker.” He smiled to the boy in genuine interest. “It is a microcosm of a number of our weaknesses you know?”
Ben stepped forward to continue the conversation, as did Jacen. Harrar continued.
“We have allowed our people outside of the decision making role to become mindless followers. Individual thought and innovation gets lost by the wayside in the process. Shimrra and Omini exploited that weakness to hijack our entire civilization. It is a long road back. You cannot just hand people their freedoms without, first, teaching them how enjoy that gift responsibly. I think that is, probably, the most important reason for our invitation to you Jacen, and you Ben…and even you Symerra.”
Symerra looked up from her perch at the viewer. She had not left it since the Cascade left the ground. She was not interested in the conversation, and went back to her business following a polite smile.
Jacen, however, finally understood the true purpose of their visit.
“The Vaksas…the Zem hak van Dak. These are steps taken to assure that our words will have ears when we reach the village. You are asking us, not merely, to talk to the High Council. You would like us to talk to those whom they rule.” Jacen said as it dawned on him.
Harrar smiled to Jacen. “Precisely. Had I suggested this to the High Council, there would have been no invitation. Even the Yuuzhan Vong have their political failings. And, I believe that our two young Jedi down there know exactly what this about. Do you know what they said to me just before I returned on board?”
Jacen and Ben leaned in to hear.
“They said. Tek a da Zirk van Yuuzhan Vong.” He looked to them individually and settled on Ben. [We fight for the future of our friends, the Yuuzhan Vong].” Harrar sighed. “I would like to think that Sha and Tahiri are the beginning of something good between us. I will take the liberty of saying that our friendship here…” He put his hand on Ben’s knee, and then Jacen’s to enunciate his point. “…is proof of such a future.”
Jacen was surprised to hear his Apprentice speak up to Harrar. “We must make sure that this seedling of ours germinates to form a great forest.” Ben stood up and walked back to the view port next to Symerra, where he picked her up and put her on his lap for a better view.
Harrar followed the boy with his eyes. “I like your apprentice. He speaks his mind with intelligence and grace, but doesn’t try to impress.”
Jacen nodded. “There is a lot of my uncle in him, but he has his own qualities that I am just starting to recognize.” Jacen sensed that Ben’s participation on this quest was written in the Force. It was becoming more apparent all the time.
The Second VAKSA
“The next one’s yours. I shall enjoy a brief rest in the interim.” Sha said turning to Tahiri as she traipsed beside him through the trees.
“Oh no Spy. You are my bait.” She said with a chuckle.
“Bait!?” Questioned Sha. “Is that how you see your loving husband? Mere bait?”
Tahiri laughed at his raised voice. She knew he was enjoying this time with her. And, she, also, knew he couldn’t wait to hear what her plan was. She waited for him to ask, because she knew it was digging at him to know.
After a long silence. “OK, you win. Where to you want me?”
Tahiri didn’t answer. She just raised her right hand into the air and the viper responded on command. Instantaneously, a rigid two meter amphistaff evolved. “Come here husband.”
Sha’s eyebrow rose a bit at the sight. “Perhaps there are better ways to enjoy a second honeymoon, but it is no reason to run me through.”
Tahiri let out a full laugh and told her husband to stand still. She, then, took the amphistaff and coaxed it to remain rigid on both ends while flaccid in the middle. She shaped the flaccid portion to conform to the chest of her husband. “Take your robeskin off.”
Sha smiled. He knew what she was doing, but couldn’t resist. “So you were impressed with my efforts back there. Just playing hard to get then?”
Tahiri chuckled and swatted Sha on the posterior. “Quiet and turn around.”
She placed the ampistaff across his chest so that the two rigid sections would face forward and back. He replaced his robeskin, and Tahiri tore two small holes to give the appearance that Sha had been impaled by the weapon. She took a step back to admire her handiwork.
“Now, look hurt.” Tahiri said.
Sha placed an expression of emotional turmoil on his face.
“No you big lummox. Physically hurt.” But Tahiri couldn’t help laughing when she said it. “You are such a troublemaker. I don’t know what I see in you.”
Sha smiled. “You see potential.” Sha was recalling a memory from their first official date back on Mon Calamari. He had taken her to dinner, and at the end of the evening he was curious as to why she had accepted the invitation. So, he asked her with deep sincerity.
Tahiri, he recalled, was amused by the question. She was, also, attracted to the fact that the mere question relayed how unassuming Sha was.
Tahiri had said, “You have potential.”
Tahiri smiled back. “That seems like such a long time ago.” She looked up to her husband. “Now, stop flirting with me and start limping in that direction. We have a visitor about 200 meters towards that clump of trees to the west.”
Sha turned serious immediately and glanced towards the west. “You could have told me.”
“Yes, I could have. Remember that.” She smiled and took off at a fast clip to the north.
Just finished reading this and the prequel, and wanted to let you know I'm impressed.
Sha is an interesting OC, and while I have to agree with the wunderkind comment someone made in the prequel, I'm still enjoying it and it doesn't bother me as much in the sequel. happy
Loved the early scenes with just the family, and the interaction between the girls and their parents.
Also enjoyed the reunions and just the whole way the characters are interacting in this.
I'll be on the look out for the next update. happy
Note: Ok, so I didn't wait a week. I like this part... wink
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(The second VAKSA continued)

Sha started a rambling stumble due west after a couple of standard minutes. He knew his wife had left him ignorant to her plan as a bit of a tease. Still, he knew she was confident of success, and had no doubt that he would be safe in her charge. The hardest part of his participation would be continuing his slow progress. Truth be told, he couldn't wait to see what loomed ahead. It was sure to be a spectacle.

As Sha approached the clump of trees doubling as an attack front for the Yuuzhan Vong warrior, he felt his wife's presence in the Force.

You look pathetic. Even an Ewok would have you for lunch. Came the thoughts.

Too much? He sent back to her.

Maybe a little. Came the sarcastic response.

Sha suppressed a smile by looking down to the ground. He was forced to look up again when he felt the urgency in Tahiri.

Stop and wait for him. His colors imply that he is of the Domain Lah. Tahiri sent on to Sha.

Sha processed the new information. Domain Lah…they tend to try and intimidate before attacking their opponent. They will try to impress upon their prey that there is no choice but to face their demise.

Oh wonderful, we are in for a show. Sha sent back in amusement.

You better hope so. Tahiri sent back in an instant, but free from concern.

Sha waited while using his peripheral vision to watch for movement from the brush below the tree clump. He did not have to wait long as a tall, muscular figure moved into his sight with a confident grace. Sha looked up and evaluated the warrior.

There were implants on all four appendages. His face was rife with scars and tattoos. Even his lips looked as if they were flayed out of recognizable existence. This one was a tried and true veteran. It should be an interesting confrontation.

Twirl your amphistaff feebly and make sure you drop it. He sensed through the Force.

Sha was about to question the logic when he, finally, located the position that his wife had chosen. He, almost, laughed at loud when he saw her. Sitting on a tree branch directly over the head of the intense warrior sat Tahiri. She looked relaxed, and amused at the scene developing before her as she comfortably swung her legs back and forth just over the warriors head. She silently blew a kiss to her husband when she was convinced that he noticed her.

Sha shook his head as he gathered his wits. Feigning weakness, he straightened his right arm, and a rigid amphistaff formed in his hand. Then, with a labored effort he started a clumsy twirl of the weapon around his head. Almost immediately, he faked a cough attributed to the false amphistaff protruding from his abdomen and stumbled forward. The twirling weapon bounced harmlessly to the ground. Sha finished the act with a look of fear to the warrior, and a disgusted grimace as he bent forward to pick it up.

Oh, very nice Spyboy. You have his attention. Now, hope that he is a showman of sorts. Came Tahiri's thoughts through the force.

Sha looked to the, now, smiling warrior. He had, already, tacked up Sha in his win column, and was about to show him how a true warrior wielded his weapon. The Yuuzhan Vong Warrior designated as the second Vaksa extended his own amphistaff above his head and began a series of impressive spins and thrusts using both hands in the process. Sha managed a glimpse to Tahiri as the show began. She was hanging by her knees from the branch above with something in her hand.

In a blur, Sha saw the amphistaff stop spinning abruptly. The Warrior's expression turned from cynical to confused in an instant. Both hands remained on his weapon as he brought it down in front of him to investigate some malfunction of sorts. Sha saw a yellow blur of hair jump down to the ground behind the warrior and his wife run directly past him while grabbing a living bag from his waist. She confidently tossed the bag to Sha, as the warrior looked up from his amphistaff in surprise at the young human just over half his height right in front of him.

With remarkable quickness, and in the warrior's confusion, Tahiri ran past the warrior again. This time she pulled at a vine that had been wrapped around her waist with a fist sized rock tied to the end. She leaped forward in a blur and threw the rock between the warrior's chest and his two implants stuck solid to the amphistaff. As the rock rebounded back to her, she picked it up and grabbed both ends of the vine and yanked for all she was worth. The warrior shot forward off balance and came down to his knees. All the time, the warrior fought to release his implants from the grip of the amphistaff.

Sha was not disappointed. His wife had tossed a large strand of Blorash Jelly on the warrior's implants as he proceeded to try and intimidate Sha with his skills. Now, the weapon was serving as a bit, and Tahiri continued to use random yanks to keep the warrior off balance.

Once reaching the tree, she Force leaped into a large 'Y' shaped connection of branches and proceeded to thread the vine around the biggest one. Tossing the end with the rock to the ground, she waved Sha forward.

"I need your weight." She said with amusement.

Sha surveyed her efforts and shrugged. He leaned into the vine and pulled for all he was worth, and Tahiri held tight to the vine on descending from the branch. The result was a rather angry and embarrassed Yuuzhan Vong Warrior of the Domain Lah being lifted off of his feet into a rather intimate position with the trunk of a large tree.

Tahiri took a look at her work and glanced over to Sha with satisfaction in her face. She, then skipped out for the living pack she had removed from the warrior on her first pass.

"Arsensalt" She said.

"Ah, taking no chances?" Sha responded, knowing that the salts counteracted the adhesive abilities of the blorash jelly.

"Nope. Besides, I spilled most of mine hanging upside down in that tree." She laughed while tying the pack to her waist.

Sha turned his attention back to the warrior, who had taken to spitting and throwing a rapid collection of insults towards the Jedi. He shook his head at the view, and, more so, at what such foolish behavior would release. It didn't take long.

"I have more." Tahiri said in fluent Yuuzhan Vong as she held a clump of Blorash Jelly up to the warrior's hindered vision. "I would guess that you will be here for a while. In that time you will, more than likely, have to relieve yourself. It would be a shame if there were a hindrance of sorts."

Sha had to turn from the scene to keep from destroying the seriousness and the sincerity of the threat. He fought for dear life to keep from laughing. The warrior, on the other hand, became much more docile as the comments registered.

Tahiri turned to Sha. He saw the a smile and a wink from his wife.

"I thought so." She said.

"After you," Sha said, while, finally, removing the staged amphistaff from his midriff.

Tahiri smiled and proceed forward to the west. She half turned to Sha as she proceeded.

"Imagine that, another Vaksa out here in the middle of nowhere. What do you suppose they were thinking?"

Sha shook his head. Tahiri knew that it had nothing to do with her rhetorical question. It was her husband full with pride in contemplation of his wife's ingenuity and creativity.

"You go on. I'll be with you in a second." Sha said without consideration as he turned back to the Yuuzhan Vong Warrior hugging the tree. "There is something I need to take care of. It should only take a moment."

Tahiri paused, but then continued forward quite sure that Sha was, already, thinking ahead to the next Vaksa.

(On board the Cascade)

Symerra squealed with delight as her mother quickly dispatched of the second Vaksa. Ben couldn't help laughing at the little girl's continued banter during the event.

At first, there was some concern when she saw Sha with an amphistaff sticking out of his robeskin. However, Ben saw a concentration in the force that could only be her father letting her in on the plan, and that she should not be concerned. From that point on, she refused to sit still.

As her mother hung upside down from the tree limb above the flaunting warrior she peered back over her shoulder at Ben and smiled. "Blorash Jelly." She said.

Ben was confused for a second until it registered to him that Tahiri was communicating through the Force with her daughter through the entire effort so she would not be worried. Ben found it amusing that Harrar had started to show a similar excitement as the events unfolded below. The final resting-place of the warrior brought laughs all around, and more than one shaking head.

(The Third VAKSA )

"Cheating?" Sha questioned his wife. "How is this cheating?"

"If I knew you had saved that detestable ooglish masquer, I would have found it and ejected it out the chute with the rest of our garbage. That thing is disgusting." She said with a hint of amusement.

"You are hurting my feelings. I've grown, somewhat, attached to this face." He said showing a wide smile through the false scars and tattoos that framed a set of severely flayed lips.

"Very funny." Tahiri frowned at the tired play on words. "Besides, I don't think it's going to work."

"Why not?" he acted offended at the thought.

"Look at this thing." She pulled at the bottom of his jowl and let it snap back to Sha's face. She then, exaggerated the necessity to wipe her hands on her robeskin. "And it is cheating."

"You are just disappointed that you don't have one." Sha said with a chuckle.

"What about the implants? You don't happen to have four of those in one of your packs do you?" Thinking she had scored some points with the question. "This next Vaksa isn't going to be easily fooled. There is a good chance he knows the warrior we introduced to that tree. He will recognize his markings."

"I won't need them. And, my dear wife, if you were more observant, you would notice that my masquer is a perfect match for our tree hugger. What do you think I was doing back there?" Sha said matter of factly.

Tahiri ignored the last comment, now realizing that the masquer did, indeed, match the scars on the warrior just dispatched. "So, what about the implants?" Tahiri asked.

The false countenance of a tried warrior smiled as if holding a big secret and proceeded to walk on by the blonde haired Jedi. "You will just have to wait and see."

Tahiri sighed loudly, which solicited another smile from her husband, now in the lead. Truth be told, he had her interest. She couldn't wait to see what he was planning.

Sha stopped abruptly. "Oh, I need your lightsaber."

Tahiri laughed. "We agreed that we would not use our lightsabers unless it was an emergency. You can't have it."

Sha turned around and smiled. "I'm not going to use it. The blade will never appear."

Tahiri considered this, and tried to determine what her husband had up his sleeve. There was only one way to find out. She reached inside her robeskin and tore open the hidden pocket retrieving the metal hilt. She glanced at it a moment as if that would bring forth the revelation of his plan. Then she tossed it to him.

"Anything else?" Tahiri asked.

Sha leaned down to her and exaggerated a flayed set of puckered lips as if begging for a kiss.

"Not going to happen. I rather kiss a diseased Rancor." She chuckled.

"No wonder the Yuuzhan Vong appear angry all the time." He said with amusement and move out at a quick pace to the west. "Try to keep up he shouted over his shoulder."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(On board the Cascade)
Jacen and Ben looked briefly to each other with smiles as they watched the animated conversation on the ground below. The petite blond haired Jedi and a tall 'Yuuzhan Vong warrior' appeared to be involved in an in-depth discussion. They had seen Sha apply the ooglish masquer back at the last Vaksa, and outside of Tahiri's vision. Sha, had then, sneaked up on his wife, and jumped out of some brush along her route. The result was more amusing to those above, than Tahiri. However, she seemed to have, finally, calmed down.
Tahiri had just turned over her lightsaber to Sha, and he was moving west at a fast clip.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(The Third VAKSA continued)

Tahiri jogged casually at a distance behind her husband that would allow her to keep him in sight, but not interfere with his plan. She sensed the third Vaksa ahead only 50 meters beyond Sha. As a precaution, she sent him a warning.

You will have company soon. She sent through the Force.

The response was vintage Sha.

You reconsidered a kiss? Tahiri felt the amusement in his thoughts.

No. But, you are approaching the third Vaksa. She sent back, and included concern in the message.

Better hurry up if you want to see it. I plan on being direct. He sent back to her. And, she increased her speed as the thoughts registered.

Sha took a few more strides before opening up with a volley of fluent Yuuzhan Vong words. At the top of his lungs he started offering thanks to Yun Yuuzhan, Yun Shuno, Yun Harla, Yun Ne'shel, Yun Txiin, and Yun Q’aah in order. He increased his speed to a fast sprint in the process. As expected, the third Vaksa warrior eased out of his concealment to take in the excitement.

Coming full speed in his direction was Vid'rik Lah. He had never seen the warrior so excited. In fact, such behavior was not becoming of great warriors. How could someone of such distinction resort to flopping around like a rabid Vortras he thought? Vid'rik Lah had just come to the edge of the clearing that Porcad Kwaad had chosen for his field of combat when he launched something it his direction. As Porcad Kwaad eyed the arcing projectile, he heard Vid'rik Lah exclaim a great victory.

"[I have defeated the Jeedai. I give you their weapon as a gift!!!]"

Porcad Kwaad returned his attention to the projectile as it landed at his feet. It was one of those repugnant lightsabers. It was an abomination. But, now it was his to display proudly to signify his share in the defeat of his Jeedai. He stooped to pick it up as Vid'rik Lah's shadow against the Petrod Sun arrived in front of him.

Porcad Kwaad had just noticed the synthetic boots on Vid'rik Lah's feet when a meter length piece of timber connected with the back of his head, and darkness over took the questions that were forming in his mind.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tahiri came into the clearing just as Sha was revealing a large branch from behind his back with nonchalance. He glanced to her quickly with a smile and proceeded to put down the warrior in a swift blow to the back of the head. She saw him check to make sure that the warrior was alive, and jog out into brush to collect another handful of Asper foliage.
Sha turned to her as she approached. "Shortest distance between two points." He said.
"What?" she responded with some confusion.
"A straight line. It's the shortest distance between two points. That was my plan." He smiled to her as it registered, and handed her back the lightsaber, which he had buffed on his robeskin.
"That's three." She said. "Two more and we can get down to the real thing."
Sha nodded with a bit of seriousness. "You said that you had a plan for that. I have some ideas, as well. Between us, we need to start thinking about how we want to approach five warriors at the same time. It won't be as easy as this." He pointed to the unconscious Kwaad Domain warrior at his feet. Then, he smiled.
"Look, snacks." Sha said pointing at the spilled living pack beside the warrior.
Tahiri looked to where Sha was pointing and saw a scurry of crustaceans making their escape from the open pack. "Good Gods, I'm married to a heathen." She laughed.
Then Tahiri turned serious once again. "So far, we have been using deception as our ally. I am confident we can do the same with the two Vaksas' ahead. However, I think our best approach to the Village Vaksa will be a direct one."
Sha raised an eyebrow at the comment. "You mean just waltz on up and say hello?"
"Something like that." She said. Sha didn't miss the dangerous smile attached to the look. "I think we need an audience."
Sha showed confusion at the comment, and his wife smiled to confound him further. He'd have to think about what she said. Something was cooking in that scar emblazoned, blonde locked head of hers. That didn't bother him in the least. What bothered him was that she was going to make him pull it out of her. His wife the tease, he thought with amusement.
"To the fourth Vaksa?" He asked.
"As soon as you're done with your snacks." She said while shaking her head and moving onto the west.
Excellent work, Trepidation!
You've really brought all these characters to life. They just leap off the screen as I read this fic. I love the banter, and particularly the way you write about Jag's transformation from "rigid Chiss" to a "Rebel type". The 3-year-old "recruits" are also so funny and touching.
Interesting storyline as well. I do wonder what's going on, and I'm sure you'll do a beautiful job of telling us.
Well done!
Thanks Oldj, Glad your enjoying it...and in reference to the characters...I think we are of the same ilk..You have to have characters you can care about, or things get kind of drab...
Incidentally, you might have missed it above, but I did a little image editing and threw together a cover to go with this little story...It kind of enhances everything when you can put a few faces with the words...
Zetta:
Just finished reading this and the prequel, and wanted to let you know I'm impressed.
Thanks for checking it out Zetta. I appreciate the comments. You are in for a treat a bit later in the story, the women (Mara, Jaina, Shada, Tahiri, and Leia) do a little interacting in the face of danger. The character dialogue in that portion was great fun to do. I've always been a Shada fan, so maybe it's just me...but giving Mara & her a couple of knives and an attitude & and sending them behind enemy lines seemed like a good idea. They thin the herd...so to say... wink Hope you keep reading
Cheers all,
