A few notes on chapter three: Sorry I took so long! I got about halfway through and then stopped and had to think about *gasp* my plotline! But I've got the chapter done! Also, Master Anin first appeared in my vig "sight", which can be found in the disabilites challenge thread. Her first name, Ruya, is a bad pun on my part (look it up on Behindthename.com to see what I mean.) Now... thanks once again to Oldj for beta'ing and onto the chapter!

EDIT: I forgot Nick's dream! How could I? It's in there now, at the bottom.

Chapter Three

It was a while after the disastrous incident with the drawing, but the way that the family was seated in the living room vaguely reminded Nick of joint life-day parties long past and also disastrous. He tried not to remember those days that had ended in the complete and utter disassembly of two of the three cleaner droids he was currently reconstructing, and focused on counting the little wires in the building kit his sister had brought him. There were two hundred tiny circuits, seventy circuit breakers, ten circuit boards, and even ten little repulsorlifts that could make model ships zoom around the room. Picking up a pencil, Nick crouched over the low table in the center of the room and planned sets of complicated electrical currents as the little parts whistled and tweeted at him from their case.

He’d blocked out the noise that New Coruscant made in order to focus on specific bits of the tune. For such a new planet, there were quite a lot of broken things. Already he’d detected two burnt out fuses in the hallway lighting system and had made a mental note to fix them later. Intently, he pressed the pencil to the paper and drew a perfect circle. He was about to draw cogs when an entire bundle of news-flimsy landed with a whump at the other end of the table.

Nick didn’t much care for news-flimsy. It was thin and already had ink on it – no good for drawing. He didn’t care for current events – the names of politicians and generals meant nothing to him, and he couldn’t keep track of the myriad worlds and distant stars the stories concerned. He knew a few words: O-N spelled on, and switches labeled O-N started machines. O-F-F was off, and buttons labeled O-F-F did the opposite of buttons labeled O-N. And if a switch said P-O-W-E-R, it was a fair bet to say you probably shouldn’t have your finger on any uninsulated wires attached to it when it was hit.

He knew a few other words by sight, too. Like not to touch the cooker when it was set to H-O-T, and that his name was spelled N-I-C-K-space-S-O-L-O. But for the most part he didn’t care for letters. Letters weren’t like numbers, which followed rules. Letters could mean anything. They were tricky things. But numbers; numbers were easy. Once you knew the rules they played by, numbers would obey you.

“That looks like it’ll be a great ship,” someone behind him intoned. Nick vaguely recognized the voice of his Uncle Luke.

Thanks, Nick’s internal monologue murmured. Somewhere above his head, he discerned a gentle chuckle from the mechanical song of the apartment. Sometimes he could get so deep into his mechanical dreams that he couldn’t pick the sounds that people made out from the music of the machines.

People made music, too, sometimes. But it was a different sort of music – it was strange; alien, almost, like it was written on a different scale for a different instrument. And it was much quieter and far off, like it didn’t exist. The music people made was distracting to Nick, so he ignored it, and focused on his orderly circuits and neat drawings.

Nick’s attention snapped back to the circuits on his paper and he scolded himself for allowing his mind to wander. He did that sometimes – got lost in the music of things, and started to think about the things that made the music, or just the music itself. A world that was constantly in song was a good world, he reflected, drawing another perfect circle.

Leia stirred another packet of sweetener into her caf and looked seriously at her brother. When he didn’t say anything, she broke the terse silence with an excellently placed. “Well?”

“I’ve been thinking,” he began.

“About?” Leia interjected.

“About Nick,” Luke finished.

“We dropped that subject about five years ago, brother dearest,” she replied with a forced smile. “I’m sure you remember Han’s and my decision?” Luke nodded.

“I do,” he assured her, “But I’ve been thinking, and there’s someone I know who I think could help him a lot.”

“I have a bad feeling about this,” Leia commented, “But I’ll hear you out.”

Luke inhaled heavily. “Okay. Here goes. Her name’s Ruya Anin—

Leia cut him off. “I know her, and I’m telling you right now – no.” Luke held up his hands in a gesture that clearly called for her to calm down and hold on.

“It’s not like that. Ruya is blind,” he explained, “So of course I think she’d be a great teacher.”

Leia emitted an exasperated sigh, but she had to admit it was worth a try.

An imperial moff paces the halls of his just-completed star destroyer, admiring the craftmanship. It's a new design - The Atlas class - and everything about it is sleek and modern. even the outer hull has no protruding antenas or shield generators to break off.

What the imperial moff doesn't know is that the engineer who designed his new ship is the child of one of the leaders who defeated the empire long ago.

Pretty realistic. You've gotten into Nick's head so well it's easy to see things from his perspective. Nice job.

I absolutely adore this! My brother's a high-functioning autistic (verbal and all that--he's nothing like Nick, except in some ways)--and somehow, your fic has given me more insights. I think you're doing well if I can recognize signs!! PM me with updates, if you do so!!

New reader! *glomp* It's great to hear praise from someone with experience. I've worked with kids with a variety of disabilities, but never autism. OldJ's been a big help with characterization.

I love this.

So sweet that Han and Leia were given the wonderful gift of Nick! I'm assuming Anakin did die, right?

Leia and Jaina pregnant at the same time...lots of hormones! laugh

You are writing this story with such compassion and realism. I do not personally know anyone with autism, but I think it would be frustrating on both the autistic individual and the family.

There are many like me who think that possibly one of the sexiest lines ever said in any movie is uttered by Han Solo when Princess Leia says, "I Love You." He doesn't say, "I Love You Too!" He says, "I KNOW." -Linda Ellerbee (SW: Legacy Revealed)

Two questions:

When will you upgrade this story.

Will we see more of this Imperial Moff, with that new ship?
