Rebel-at-Heart: Perhaps that is why I am willing to look at anything well written right now! I think your story is very interesting and well written. I am enjoying it.

hugs Thanks!

Chimpo_the_Sith: And then the author say that Jag will never be forgotten... Well yeah he never will be forgoten if you make it TUQ style. Add one line and you can say he is mentioned. No developement of character but he is in the book. Fans should be ecstatic

You know what occured to me after reading your post? Maybe Del Rey, at the end of NJO, didn't want Jag and Jaina to be together. I mean, they had this hot romance, and then it just stopped so abruptly. It's like Denning is trying to make their separation more believable. Hmm...I don't like the way my thoughts are taking me, but then again, I am Miss Negative.

Gloria: Jag is probably my favorite EU character (or very high on the list), he was one of the biggest reason I stuck it out with the NJO.

Jag is one of my favorites too! It's why I want to see some more Jag action without Jaina, so that we can all see Jag's personality shine.

I mean, I stopped reading TFP because of the eye color typo. hypnotized Though (don't hurt me! worried ) I actually kind of prefer the eyes blue now. There are so many green eyed people in the books already..

hugs Me to!!! When I found out about Del Rey's retcon, I immediately jumped upon it. That's why the Jag in this fic as blue eyes though there was a discussion about this in an earlier chapter. But the other nice thing with Jag and his blue eyes (and it makes sense, because the Baron has dark eyes and Syal has blue eyes - the green eyes are so random) is that it works well in this fic. Like green-eyed Jag can be Jaina's, and blue-eyed Jag can belong to blue Shawnie....seriously though, the Del Rey retcon is growing on me (like Chak Fel cool ).

TheCrazyRodian: Yes! Jag and Shawnkyr have a very complex friendship, and that's why I get so confused by the fact that it's almost entirely ignored! We get little hints here and there of how deeply they trust each other and are loyal to each other, but even in fanfic we don't get a lot of Shawnkyr/Jag friendship depth.

It was a big mystery to me too. I can understand why profic overlooks it; after all, it is a pretty minor plot point in the grand scheme of things. But why fanfic overlooks it, I don't know. cry

Friendships are complicated, and people are complicated. It's nice to see the same sort of stuff get dealt with here.

Mixed gender friendships often seem to be ignored for some reason as well. Most friendship fics are male/male (especially involving pilots) or female/female (the wives). But it just didn't cut it for me.

I think that the Star Wars universe has a lot of very interesting relationships between characters. The romantic ones are popular, of course, but I'm actually more fascinated with the various examples of deep friendship we see.

Totally agree with you here. Romance is all well and good, and there are some great authors on these boards who can write it well. But human interactions are so varied that I thought it would be nice to look at some other aspects of it.

My favorite friendship of all, though, might be Wedge and Wes.

laugh Aaron Allston did just a good job with them.

And I definitely, definitely like the friendship that Corran and Elegos form in I, Jedi.

There's something so heartfelt about it. For me, when Corran was confronted with Elegos's remains, it was one of the lowest points in the book for me. Corran was completely devastated, especially at the fact that Elegos died because of him.

And in the middle of this friendship hall of fame we have Jag and Shawnkyr, because in spite of getting shafted in profic, and greatly helped by your stories, I LOVE their friendship with each other. Red Sky, Blue Flame is such an interesting story when you really think about the implications of everything in it.

RSBF is what prompted me to start writing this story. I was really curious about their relationship and how it grew from simple admiration into something so much more.

That's why I'm glad you're writing this. It gives both Jag and Shawnkyr and their friendship with each other the depth it deserves.

Thank you!

Now, to write down ideas for more friendship 'fics....

No more bunnies, please!!!!!!!! (though you might be interested in knowing that after I'm done with AHP and FNM, I'll be starting something on Soontir, and another short piece on Kyle, cause they are so cool. cool )

pregnantpadme: at least the fleet has a name...

laugh

Csillan_girl: Sure, we're not dealing with the nice children from the YJK series any more, but I would never have thought it would come to something like that.

I feel like the kids in YJK were from an alternate universe sometimes.

Jade_Max: I adored Shankyr's discussion with her fatehr, the un-emotion analytical observations and the decisions she's considering....

I wanted them to have a close relationship, but one still in tune with their culture.

On a more serious note, I have to say I'm concerned for the J/S ship because Jag I think has more... what did her father say... honor? than to risk his friendship, what's left of it, with her by sleeping with her.

Yes, Jag is an honorable man. And he cares about Shawnkyr too much to allow her to sacrifice so much for him. But if Shawnkyr pushes it, can he resist a six foot tall bundle of blue hotness (to quote Uriden from somewhere? wink Jag is going to have to be very careful, because whatever choice he makes is irrevocable.

I like Jag in this, though I still say he's no pair for Jaina with Jaina being the Alpha wink Shawnkyr at least can match him and let him be the Alpha without de-manculinizing him. I know, that's not a word...

I think so too. I really want Jag to take a stand for himself, and one of the problem with the J/J dynamic for me in the NJO was that Jaina had to be the dominant one, that she felt threatened by too much manliness (which is basically the epitome of Kyp). Shawnkyr isn't the type to feel threatened by his need to dominate (he is a Fel and a Corellian) because she is good at separating such behaviors. What Shawnkyr is threatened by, however, is Jag's humanity.

personally I think he should send Cem with a letter of apology

Cem would probably charm all their troubles away. happy

On that note, sorry for not responding sooner... I've been working for 8 days straight and needed to sleep last night

hugs Glad to have you back!

RenegadeEwok: You're right, Jag doesn't look good in blue. But I see the first pic as Thevan, actually. Youthful, with just enough age to distinguish him as an elder (the Chiss do age more slowly, after all). And Athan, on the bottom... love

Thank you so much!!! That's exactly how I picture them. If I can ask (and feel free to shoot me at any time), how do you see Shawnkyr?

Okay, sorry for being so evil.

POSTIE TOMORROW!!!!

You know have you ever wondered why there was no book about the Empire? It's always Rebels or BIG 3. At Lucasfilm they have some unwritten rule that Empire must always be the bad, weak and etc. The same goes for Chiss. This trilogy was suppose to be about Unknown regions and Chiss. We got bugs instead. And there aren't suppose to be any Chiss in Legacy of the Force series. Core worlds and that's it. Jag is fans favourite like they wrote in Insider but he's not a favourite of authors or people who rule SW and getting some developement of his character will be very unlikely thing to happen. Maybe in comics but I don't think it will happen. Let's face it if Jag won't be close to Jaina in some way or other then he will be out of books quickly. He will be another Fel who fell... sad

We also have to acknowledge the fact that his last name is rather ominous, and he's named after his uncle that was killed by smugglers. cry

~ Chapter 12 ~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The flower that blooms against adversity is the rarest and most beautiful of all.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Cselarn

The minutes ticked by slowly for Jag as he stood in the alcove across from Shawnkyr’s quarters, his very presence marked with a sense of fear intermingled with excitement as he sought to come to decision.

The best course of action would have been if Shawnkyr had refused him coldly and clearly, thereby giving Jag no choice except to move on. But instead, she had placed the choice in his hands, something she had undoubtedly intended as kindness but in reality was cruel.

Jag had spent his entire life meeting and surpassing the expectations of the Chiss people, and he was no stranger to discipline, of both the mental and physical kind. Yet this strange obsession he had developed for Shawnkyr would not go away, no matter how hard he tried to vanish his feelings. It embarrassed him to realize that he could not even focus on his duties because of his wandering thoughts.

He was in serious danger of becoming unhinged, and he hated himself for it.

He hated the fact that he was on the verge of ruining one of the best relationships of his life; he hated the fact that all of his vaunted logic and stamina failed him over so primal a matter; and he hated that his thinking as of late was dominated by his other head.

He sighed in frustration. Giving into his desires would only prove that he was human. And had he not spent an entire lifetime in the Ascendancy trying to prove otherwise? Spending the night with Shawnkyr would humanize him in the most denigrating way possible.

Worse, what would it do to Shawnkyr? To have her first sexual experience – and Jag was sure that this was the case – to be in his arms? Would she ever recover from the shame of it? He was a human and would never be accepted as anything other than Shawnkyr’s friend – and he was managing that just barely.

Jag almost walked away from Shawnkyr’s door at that moment.

Yet an unbidden and unwelcome thought held him back. Shawnkyr might not want her first experience in these matters with him, but Jag could not bear the thought that it would be with anyone else.

He also hated it when his secret thoughts came from where he had neatly hidden them away.

There were things in his mind that he did not understand, things he had repressed, hidden even from himself, though now and then they would surface.

He remembered being trapped on a mission a few months ago, Shawnkyr unconscious, all of them facing death. He had wanted to touch her at the end, lay his hand on her hair so that she would not die alone – so that he would not die alone. But the power of his desire had scared him more than the threat of non-existence, and he had never quite made contact.

And afterwards, he had forced himself to forget. Again. All those times, he had made himself forget; all those times, he had reminded himself of his love for Jaina. But what made it excruciating was the fact that whatever he felt for Shawnkyr, he did not love Jaina less. It was not either-or but both-and.

He did not understand how this could be, and he could not ignore it now. He could not freeze it and put it out of his mind, suppress it under the shiny lid of duty. His honesty would not permit that. To agree to Shawnkyr’s proposal was not a matter of doing the necessary to solve his problem. Had it been, he might have felt better about it because that would not have been a betrayal. But part of him wanted this far too much. That was betrayal.

Jag looked at the smooth frame of Shawnkyr’s door. Coming to a decision, he stepped out of the alcove.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When her door chime beeped, Shawnkyr had nearly jumped in fright.
She had spent the past hour alternately wishing either that Jag would come and get this over with or that he would not come and forget about her offer.
No, she had made the offer from her heart. She wanted him to take it if it meant that he would find peace. After all, it was because of her that he was suffering.
Smoothing her thin night robe, she keyed her door open.
It was Jag, who was still dressed in his uniform.
He entered and then paused as he caught full sight of Shawnkyr. Having never seen Shawnkyr in anything but her uniform, gym clothes, and on occasion, formal dresses, he was surprised to see that she was clad in a short nightgown and a matching robe. Her hair, released from its hair pins, hung down her back like a silken curtain.
Chiding himself for being so easily perturbed by her appearance, he fidgeted awkwardly. “I was not sure if I should have come. I do not wish to force this upon you.”
“I am not forced,” she said. “I am doing this of my own free will.”
“So you say.” Moving closer to Shawnkyr, Jag took a deep breath and turned slightly to face her. He had already decided on a course of action that would tell him whether to proceed or not. If he sensed that Shawnkyr could not continue, he would stop and leave.
After some hesitation, he silently raised his hand and gently tucked a strand of blue black hair behind the other’s ear. In doing so, he allowed his fingers to run through the soft locks. His eyes did not leave her face, and when she did not react, he gently brushed the gleaming hair from her shoulder to reveal the side of her neck. Slowly, taking care not to seem threatening, he leaned forward.
Shawnkyr tried to remain calm as Jag pressed a kiss to her neck. Nevertheless, she was startled by the feel of it. Unlike humans, the Chiss did not have facial hair, and she had never felt it before. Though Jag had shaved earlier, she could still feel the slight roughness of his jaw. She trembled slightly as his lips trailed upwards to just below her ear, then lower to the crook of her neck. To her surprise, it did not feel unpleasant but instead, it raised prickles of pleasurable sensations that made her pulse quicken.
She became sharply aware of Jag’s scent, so different from that of a Chiss. It evoked the crisp, clean air beneath Csilla’s open skies, mixed in with the subtle scent of spice. She had always deemed it inordinately pleasing. Now she found it enticing as well.
Jag drew back, and again, their eyes met. Shawnkyr could not quite repress a shiver as she clearly read in the blue pools barely restrained desire, passion just waiting to be unleashed. She drew in a shaky breath as Jag started to undo the tie to her robe.
With slow, deliberate movements, he began to untie the knot on the silvery garment, never looking at what he was doing, always watching her face. With sudden insight, Shawnkyr realized that Jag was waiting to see if she would resist further intimacy.
Jag was wondering why Shawnkyr did not recoil. He began to dare hope as he felt his restraint begin to crumble. It did not help that he was so close to her that he could feel the warmth of her skin, hear the soft intake of her breath as he finally undid the simple knot.
Shawnkyr became aware of Jag’s hands spreading her robe open. She lowered her eyes, her face flushing. How odd that after a lifetime of closeness, she should now feel shy. Throughout the years of their acquaintance, they had seen each other in various states of undress; why should it bother her now?
It came to her then that she was not baring herself before a friend but a lover. A human lover. That was reason enough to make her distinctly uncomfortable.
Can I do this? she wondered.
As if hearing her thoughts, Jag said, “Do not force yourself. I will leave.”
She glanced up again and looked at her friend. Jag had pulled back his hands; his face was impassive. But he did not guard his eyes quickly enough, could not hide the disappointment and the hurt of rejection. The effort to clamp down on the desire, to bank the fires of passion, was all too visible in those pools of blue.
“I should not have come,” he said again.
All her logic, all her common sense, told her to send Jag away. If he left now, there would no pain for her.
But there would be pain for Jag, and that would cause her pain. Regardless of his noble words, she could tell that he still desperately needed this with her, that he would know no peace without it.
Mistaking her silence for rejection, he began to move away, but Shawnkyr grasped his wrist. He looked back at her warily.
Shawnkyr stared at the lean wrist she held and marked its barely tamed power. Whatever she chose to do now, it would be irrevocable. I made this offer, she reminded himself. It was my choice. “Stay,” she whispered.
It was enough and too much.
Restraint snapped, resolve broke. Jag leaned forward and captured her lips. She forced her mind to go blank. Better not to think, just feel. But she was not prepared for the deeper kiss that Jag drew her into and could not quite suppress a gasp of apprehension. It was different from the kiss in the medical center. That had been so brief that she had hardly had time to register it beyond its bruising force. But this!
She became acutely aware of the world of difference between the kiss of a Chiss and of a human. Not so much the feel or taste of it – for Jag’s lips were soft and warm and amazingly sweet – but the power, however restrained, behind it.
Feeling Jag’s hands on her arms, which held her with startling strength, she reflexively gripped his arms in a defensive gesture. The motion only brought the pilot’s strength into sharper relief, and she could feel the ripple of muscles beneath the fine fabric of his sleeves. So disturbed was she that she drew in a shuddering breath when Jag finally broke the kiss. But then she was eased down upon the bed, and she found herself fighting to still her suddenly racing heart.
For the longest moment, she panicked at the feeling of power and hardness upon her that was wholly unfamiliar, as were the hands that held her down – Jag’s hands.
His lips were upon her neck and throat, edacious and seeking. Shawnkyr felt her breath coming in short spurts, and try as she might, she could not stay her alarm, and it took all the discipline she could muster not to recoil from her imminent submission. She closed her eyes and tried to calm herself, tried to think past her fear. Her grip upon Jag's arms tightened even though she strove not to resist actively.
Jag sensed his friend’s discomfort, felt the trembling of her body, was aware that Shawnkyr was finding it difficult to shift from a more familiar mode of intimacy to one she had no experience of. He also knew that all the skill he possessed would be of no use if his friend failed to subdue her fear. But he could no longer rein in his passion. Things had gone too far.
The mere sight of Shawnkyr with her gleaming hair spread on the pillows was simply too much for him to resist. Even her heady scent was affecting him. With fingers that slightly shook, he tenderly brushed stray strands of black from her cheek.
“It is beyond my strength to stop now. Forgive me, Ailen Mel,” he said entreatingly.
Shawnkyr felt the racing of her heart slow down. Her eyes opened, and she stared at the man above her. In her fear, she had forgotten that this was Jag, a man who cared for her deeply. He would do nothing that would hurt her. She peered at the countenance above her and centered all her thoughts and feelings on its handsomeness. Her fears started to diminish, her resistance faded.
She relaxed beneath him, her grip loosened, and her arms slowly slid around him, not to oppose but to reassure and convey her willingness to continue.
Jag’s lips closed upon hers once more, kissing her so tenderly, so sweetly, that it all but took her breath away. She opened herself to the experience, allowing pure sensation to wash over her.
Once past the initial shock, Shawnkyr found Jag’s kisses and the touch of his knowing hands more potent than she had ever expected or imagined. She could not suppress the tremors that passed through her body or the soft moans that escaped her lips. The countless tales of Jag’s skills as a lover did not do him justice if he could arouse so many turbulent feelings in Shawnkyr this easily.
She managed to hold herself steady while Jag slowly undressed her, and she shivered at the covetous gleam in his eyes when they beheld her bared body. Though she had seen that gleam in the eyes of others, she had never reacted as she now did to Jag’s desirous regard. She wondered if it were because he was her dear friend or if it were due to something far more complex than she was ready to unravel at the moment.
He shed his own clothing, and Shawnkyr caught herself keenly admiring her friend’s form. Jag was stronger and larger than Chiss men, and his body was covered with a light dusting of hair that she should have found repulsive but did not.
Confusion clouded her mind at her unaccountable attraction to her friend’s body. It was an unfamiliar feeling. Shawnkyr had experienced physical attraction to other Chiss before, but she had been taught to consider such feelings as admiration for beauty or appreciation of worth; they had never evolved into anything recognizably carnal in nature, not even remotely. But this was different. Jag induced an acute visceral response that she had not previously known even with the most handsome of Chiss. She could not deny the fact that Jag was awakening something deep within her, and even now he was making her feel sensations and emotions that she had once considered next to impossible.
Jag saw the bewilderment in Shawnkyr’s eyes and comprehended the thoughts that were taking place within his friend. Mindful of her inexperience and innocence in being loved in such a fashion, he took his cues from her reactions. As much as he ached to seek his own release, the need to pleasure her was paramount if the entire experience was to be as memorable as he intended it to be.
“Trust me, Ailen Mel,” he murmured as he slowly covered her visibly trembling body with his own.
She could seek courage in his reassuring gaze, knew that if she experienced any distress, Jag would see it at once and assuage it or, conversely, heighten her pleasure as soon as he felt it. And she knew then that Jag had anticipated all of these things and intended to make her first yielding an exceptional and joyful one.
Shawnkyr shivered as bared flesh touched bared flesh. Caught her breath when she felt him fully. She shakily whispered, “I trust you.”
Jag silently took exception to his friend’s words. This would not be for his pleasure alone. He would ensure his Ailen Mel knew complete satisfaction before the night was over. Any other outcome was unacceptable.
“I do not wish to hurt you,” Jag said softly, seeing his friend’s anxiety. “Try to relax, Shawnkyr.”
She softly breathed, “I know,” and willed herself to calm down.
“Enjoy it, Ailen Mel.” His dulcet voice breached her rapture-fogged mind.
Finally surrendering to his ministrations, Shawnkyr felt a thrill race through her veins as she heard her name uttered with profound, rough-voiced felicity.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When it was over, Jag planted a last lingering kiss upon her lips, and she sighed at the tenderness of it. She opened her eyes and watched Jag draw the covers up over their bodies before lying down close beside her. She lay quietly for a moment, sorting out her thoughts and feelings, waiting for her body to calm down. When Jag slipped a protective arm around her, she turned her head and gazed at him.

His cheeks rosy from his own release, he looked at her intently. “Did I hurt you?” he asked in a hushed voice.

Shawnkyr shook her head. “Not at all,” she whispered. “I...I did not know such pleasure existed,” she said, flushing at her admission. “What you just did is...is amazing.”

A low chuckle was his reply, and a thrill snaked its way through her nerves at the sound of it. She saw Jag looking down at her, his eyes darker than she ever seen them before. “I have wanted to do this for so long,” he murmured. “I am glad you enjoyed it.” Jag tenderly tucked a stray strand of her hair behind her ear. “You have never done this before, Ailen Mel?” he asked huskily, a corner of his mouth quirking upwards.

“No,” Shawnkyr managed to reply.

The blue eyes darkened even further. “It should not matter,” Jag said, his smile rakish, “but it gladdens me that I am the first.”

She flushed and looked at him more pensively now, which made Jag wonder at the way she now regarded him. He began to feel concern about what had just passed between them. Was his friend now regretting her choice? “Shawnkyr, I –”

She placed her fingers against his lips and said with a small smile, “Sleep, Tako. I think we both need the rest,” she murmured.

Jag hesitated, then nodded and relaxed into the pillow. His concerns could be left until tomorrow. For now, Shawnkyr was right. They both needed to rest.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Only a few hours had passed when Shawnkyr slipped out of bed and slowly dressed, a mild ache in the lower regions of her body calling to mind what she had undergone just hours earlier. As she drew on her robe, she glanced at the recumbent form that had lain beside her. She shivered at the memory of what had occurred between them the night before. I have never been more afraid in my life, she realized. She did not know how she had borne the height of their coupling. To surrender control and accept conquest. To be the sheath to Jag’s sword.
She paused, caught between a shiver and a sigh. Truth be told, she was not certain whether the turmoil she felt was born of what she had endured – or of what she had enjoyed. Was it just Jag’s considerable skill or did I learn something about myself this past night? she wondered.
She looked upon her sleeping friend once more. Not just my friend any longer, she realized with mixed emotions. My lover.
Jag’s handsome face was peaceful, the lines of his body more relaxed than they had been the past several days. Shawnkyr reached out and brushed strands of the dark silk from his cheek. She regarded the other’s features as she had the evening before. On that I anchored my determination, she mused gravely. But something more helped me to continue, and I cannot tell if it were solely for our friendship’s sake. Not yet.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jag slowly awakened, his mind gradually emerging from a peaceful dreamscape. For a moment, he was content to lie still and remember. That was such a strange dream.

He eased himself up on one arm and drowsily looked about. And then his mind snapped to awareness. He was not in his room. He recognized the fixtures, the furniture and the walls. He was in Shawnkyr’s quarters, lying in Shawnkyr’s bed.

He drew his breath in sharply. Had last night really happened? Or had he been so in need that he had at last failed to distinguish between his waking dreams and reality? But there was no getting around the fact that he had awakened in the bed of his friend. He shook his head in confusion. Ridiculous to think that he had sleepwalked his way here. And anyway, even if he had sleep walked, Shawnkyr would have sent him back – after waking him up and making fun of him.

Bemused, he sat up and tried to clear the remaining cobwebs from his mind. He had not slept so soundly in what felt like years. That in itself told him that something had happened. His body, too, felt different. He was sated. It must have happened. He felt a sense of release that had been absent for so many months. It had happened. He did not know whether to be joyful or worried. For one thought came to him on the heels of his discovery: where was Shawnkyr?

He turned towards the door to her small sitting area. It was then that he saw her.

She was standing near the viewport that was found in all Chiss quarters, staring at the stars mindlessly. Clad only in her robe, her hair still flowing free, she looked serene and innocent. Jag, reluctant to disturb her, silently rose from the bed and dressed. When he was done, he went to join her. He was about to step into the room when Shawnkyr turned her head and looked upon him with curiously veiled eyes.

“Did you sleep well?” she quietly asked.

Jag found himself unable to fully face his friend and look into her eyes. Truth be told, he was afraid of what he might see in those red windows once Shawnkyr chose to unveil her feelings.

He did not move from his place. “Very well,” he murmured. “It is the first good night’s sleep I have had in many months.”

“That is good to hear.”

For a moment, silence reigned. Jag gazed at the figure before him. Images of the night before lingered in his mind, and he found it hard to reconcile the acquiescent woman who had yielded to his passion with the enigmatic officer who now surveyed the stars in silence. He wondered if the experience had left an unpleasant mark on his friend and if that would now mar their relationship permanently.

“Do you regret what you did?” he softly inquired.

Shawnkyr turned to face him. Jag was struck once more by the crystal clarity of her eyes. “I do not regret anything,” she replied. “As long as you are happy.” After a pause, she added, “Are you?”

“More than you can possibly imagine,” Jag breathed.

A slight frown marred her brow. “You do not look very happy,” she said. “What troubles you?”

Jag sighed. “I fear that in accepting your offer, I have hurt you in turn, Ailen Mel.” At the other’s expression of puzzlement, he explained, “I felt your distress last night. You could not hide your fear. You must have suffered.”

“No, Tako, I did not. You made certain of that.” The corners of her fine lips turned slightly upwards.

Jag, aware that he was being teased, felt his face color. “I am glad you did not find it too unpleasant,” he managed to say.

“You also seem given to understatement this morning,” Shawnkyr added, the teasing in her tone becoming more evident.

Jag blushed, but he refused to let himself be distracted from what he needed to say. “It would not have been right if only I experienced any pleasure,” he murmured. “But even the reward of pleasure cannot change the fact that this was not of your wanting. I know how hard it must have been for you to do something you never desired.” He swallowed hard. “I should have stopped,” he whispered. “I should not have let you make such a sacrifice.”

When Shawnkyr would have spoken, he swiftly raised a hand to forestall her. “I know how you felt. I was frightened, too, the first time I experienced such intimacy. But at least I truly wanted the experience. But you...you had nothing to help you endure it.” He lowered his eyes before Shawnkyr should see his self-recrimination. “I have sated my desire, but I am not sure it was worth the price you paid.”

Shawnkyr gazed at her friend. I should not have left his side while he was still asleep. Not this first time. He thinks me distant and full of regret.

“Come here,” she said softly.

Jag hesitated at first but then did as he was bid. Without warning, Shawnkyr grasped him by his shirt, pulled him close, and kissed him full on the mouth. Jag gasped at the unexpected gesture. Shawnkyr drew back and cupped his face. Red eyes held blue.

“You are wrong, it was worth the price,” she quietly said. “And I did have something. I had your affection and the affection I have always borne you. That was more than enough to see me through. And, as you put it…” Dropping her hands, she drew back, and Jag saw that she was smiling, that her smile reached her eyes. “It was not unpleasant. Not in the least.”

Jag gazed at her with something close to awe as the pair fell into silence. After a moment, she looked at him thoughtfully. “Has the madness passed?” she asked.

He considered the question. “In truth, I do not know,” he said. “While we are on shore leave, time apart from you will tell me. I will only know for certain when we meet again.” He looked at his hands. “I do not know what to say,” he admitted. “Save that I owe you so much.”

Shawnkyr shook her head. “You owe me nothing. You gave me as much as you took.”

Jag looked at her in puzzlement. “Did I?” he said. “What could I have given you?”

“A new experience and an unforgettable one. In all our years together, you have introduced me to so many.”

Jag looked at her doubtfully. “You may yet regret this,” he said, his countenance tensing slightly.

“Have you so little faith in me, Tako?” Shawnkyr gently chided. Color stained Jag’s cheeks again as she said, “Everything you have taught me, I cherish, my friend. Even this.”

Jag stared at her in astonishment. Holding her smile, Shawnkyr sat down on her couch and patted the seat next to her. After a space of a moment, Jag accepted the invitation. She leaned back against him, and he curled a supporting arm around her shoulders.

Jag pressed his lips against her hair. He felt Shawnkyr's hand on his arm, warm and reassuring.

His fears dwindled.

But as the two of them continued to enjoy the peace of a comfortable silence that had long been absent from their relationship, his comlink beeped. Annoyed, he used his free hand to turn it on. “Fel,” he said, his sharp voice letting the other person know that this interruption was not welcome.

It was Carnen, whose delay in answering bespoke of his surprise in hearing Jag’s gruff answer. “I apologize for disturbing you, Commander, but I tried your quarters, and you did not answer.”

“It is because I am not in my quarters, Carnen,” he said pointedly.

“Of course, sir.”

Jag felt Shawnkyr shake in silent amusement. “What do you need, Lieutenant Commander?”

“We received a message from a coded frequency, Commander. It originated from the buffer zone.”

Jag exchanged a curious look with Shawnkyr. “Who would be sending us a message from there?”

“Communications has decoded part of the message already sir. It is addressed to you, from a Knight Jaina Solo. She wishes to arrange a meeting.”

My fave part of this post is Jag's very anguished decisions making. Hardcore angst, yo!

Shawnie's very brave, I have to say. She rocks.

And as I said before, it looks like it gave them peace.

...

until Jaina burts in! Nice touch, I totally wasn't expecting it!!

Yay! *dances* go shawnie!

!

That was muy intense. Well done. grin I admit to finding myself more squicked than I thought I would be - though I think it's less because of the Chiss/human pairing, which doesn't bother me, and more because of a couple of Jag's lines of dialogue (It will be easier for you if you do not resist me, particularly) that made me go "Whoa."

I love the parts where we get to see what Shawnkyr's thinking - there's this great sense of indecision in her that helps to de-squick some of Jag's lines for me. Her wavering back and forth between fear/anxiety and enjoyment also adds a touch of realism to the whole scene.

And OH the ending. Heh heh. I can't wait till Jaina shows up! devil

shock

Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness.

::Faints::

I have chills up my spine from this chapter--well, from that and from the music I have playing, which I definitely changed to suit your post once I started. Wow. I--I don't even know what to say. I'll just go through a line-by-line or something. I have to read it again. I just have to. Gah.

Jag had spent his entire life meeting and surpassing the expectations of the Chiss people, and he was no stranger to discipline, of both the mental and physical kind. Yet this strange obsession he had developed for Shawnkyr would not go away, no matter how hard he tried to quench his feelings. It embarrassed him to realize that he could not even focus on his duties because of his wandering thoughts.

He was in serious danger of becoming unhinged, and he hated himself for it.

I was going to quote even more, but then I realized that I'd have to quote the entire first page or so, so I'll do my best to break it up.

This is so deeply Jag that it hurts. (Never mind the awful syntax of my last sentence). What I mean, is that this struggle, this loss of control and self-hatred, is the demon that haunts Jag. He spent so much time trying to prove himself to everyone that any weakness, any sign of being less than a living legend, and he abuses himself. His whole world has been under his control but not this, and it's eating him apart.

He hated the fact that he was on the verge of ruining one of the best relationships of his life; he hated the fact that all of his vaunted logic and stamina failed him over so primal a matter; and he hated that his thinking as of late was dominated by his other head.

laugh

Sorry to tell you, Jag, but you're a man, so you're at a serious disadvantage here. I'd give you advice if I had any.

Yet an unbidden and unwelcome thought held him back. Shawnkyr might not want her first experience in these matters with him, but Jag could not bear the thought that it would be with anyone else.

Ooh. That's deeper than just a passing bit of lust, Jag. You're letting your lust for control bleed over into your desire for Shawnkyr, and that's scary.

He also hated it when his secret thoughts came from where he had neatly hidden them away.

There were things in his mind that he did not understand, things he had repressed, hidden even from himself, though now and then they would surface.

shock

I shouldn't be surprised, really, but that definitely explains a lot. It makes sense, too; a perfectionist like Jag would have the tendency to repress a lot of things.

But what made it excruciating was the fact that whatever he felt for Shawnkyr, he did not love Jaina less. It was not either-or but both-and.

laugh
Dude, Jag, the girl's already scared enough to have sex with just you. You might want to think the menage a trois idea... tongue

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Time for a scene shift.
No, she had made the offer from her heart. She wanted him to take it if it meant that he would find peace. After all, it was because of her that he was suffering.
Hmm. I don't know if it's exactly your fault, Shawnkyr. You are the object of his desire, yes, but it's his desire that's causing him so much turmoil. You can't really blame yourself. But you definitely ought to spend a little more time introspecting about how you really feel about Jag.
All her logic, all her common sense, told her to send Jag away. If he left now, there would no pain for her.
But there would be pain for Jag, and that would cause her pain. Regardless of his noble words, she could tell that he still desperately needed this with her, that he would know no peace without it.
Like I said before, Shawnkyr, your friendship with Jag is a little more than your average friendship. I think you love him, Kyrn, and not just in a friend-to-friend way.
Uh, I was going to try and do a line-by-line of the whole post, but I can't really break up the sex scene very well. So I'll make a general comment, then point out a couple of parts that I thought were really interesting.
I don't know how to describe the way you wrote the scene, Inara, but I do know this--somehow you've managed to make the scene vivid without being explicit (i.e., without breaking the board rules). It's so full of emotion and passion it really gives me the chills. I'm not sure I'll ever recover.
She managed to hold herself steady while Jag slowly undressed her, and she shivered at the covetous gleam in his eyes when they beheld her bared body. Though she had seen that gleam in the eyes of others, she had never reacted as she now did to Jag’s desirous regard. She wondered if it were because he was her dear friend or if it were due to something far more complex than she was ready to unravel at the moment.
Ahh, now she's starting to realize that there's more to her attachment to Jag than she thought. Very interesting.
Confusion clouded her mind at her unaccountable attraction to her friend’s body. It was an unfamiliar feeling. Shawnkyr had experienced physical attraction to other Chiss before, but she had been taught to consider such feelings as admiration for beauty or appreciation of worth; they had never evolved into anything recognizably carnal in nature, not even remotely. But this was different. Jag induced an acute visceral response that she had not previously known even with the most handsome of Chiss. She could not deny the fact that Jag was awakening something deep within her, and even now he was making her feel sensations and emotions that she had once considered next to impossible.
This is really intense stuff that's going on here. And I'm not just talking about the sex tongue . I mean, Shawnkyr is learning a lot about herself from this whole situation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Am I the only one who thinks it's funny that Inara just "yadda yadda yadda"d sex? Or would that be "tilde"d sex?

Then there's talking, then there's more tilde-ing that does not involve sex, then we change times.

Only a few hours had passed when Shawnkyr slipped out of bed and slowly dressed, a mild ache in the lower regions of her body calling to mind what she had undergone just hours earlier. As she drew on her robe, she glanced at the recumbent form that had lain beside her. She shivered at the memory of what had occurred between them the night before. I have never been more afraid in my life, she realized. She did not know how she had borne the height of their coupling. To surrender control and accept conquest. To be the sheath to Jag’s sword.

She paused, caught between a shiver and a sigh. Truth be told, she was not certain whether the turmoil she felt was born of what she had endured – or of what she had enjoyed. Was it just Jag’s considerable skill or did I learn something about myself this past night? she wondered.

That's what I've been saying all along! Shawnkyr is not as platonic in her affection as she thinks she is. Or, at least, as she thought she was.

Perspective change... NOW!

Ridiculous to think that he had sleepwalked his way here. And anyway, even if he had sleep walked, Shawnkyr would have sent him back – after waking him up and making fun of him.

I get the feeling that there aren't many Chiss besides Shawnkyr who would laugh off the impropriety of a situation like that. Like I said, complicated feelings.

What's the word of the day, kids? AWKWARD. Though it could be worse. And when Jaina shows up, I guarantee the awkwardness will abound. But I shan't get ahead of myself.

Jag, aware that he was being teased, felt his face color. “I am glad you did not find it too unpleasant,” he managed to say.

“You also seem given to understatement this morning,” Shawnkyr added, the teasing in her tone becoming more evident.

laugh

She really has a sharp sense of humor.

Without warning, Shawnkyr grasped him by his shirt, pulled him close, and kissed him full on the mouth. Jag gasped at the unexpected gesture. Shawnkyr drew back and cupped his face. Red eyes held blue.

Okay, so I was going to say that I thought this was really sweet of Shawnkyr, but right now I can't stop laughing, because of something totally unrelated. Well, almost totally. It's kind of a long story, but suffice it to say that I have a group of three really close friends at home who are my bros in every way, and it's kind of a running joke between us whenever we're sharing our woes about women to give the advice, no matter what the situation, "Just kiss her full on the mouth." It's not your fault, but I'm never going to be able to read this line again without hearing one of my friends' voices saying "Just kiss her full on the mouth." doh! I promise, your writing is good; it's just that my reading isn't.

Aaand, for the grand finale, we have awkwardness galore:

“Communications has decoded part of the message already sir. It is addressed to you, from a Knight Jaina Solo. She wishes to arrange a meeting.”

[face_uh_oh_we're_screwed]

and

[face_i_adore_awkward_situations]

One more observation before I go. Shawnkyr's planning on doing this again. Shawnkyr gazed at her friend. I should not have left his side while he was still asleep. Not this first time. He thinks me distant and full of regret.

Emphasis on "this first time"? Or was that just a red herring?

Oh, and another thing:

The flower that blooms against adversity is the rarest and most beautiful of all.

I get this mental image of one of the Chiss leaders standing in front of Jag saying this, Jag looking confused, then the cloaked old dude explaining "You don't meet a girl like that every dynasty" then walking away.

But, of course, we won't see any such official approval of the pairing. And we certainly won't see any Jaina approval.

::Shivers::

Definitely one of the most powerful posts I've ever read. It practically bleeds emotion and sensuality. I can hardly wait to see what's next.
