	Great post, Inara. Shawnkyr really doesn't know what she's getting herself into with Jag, but I'm sure she'll enjoy it. Well, this is one of your fics, so there're probably some tragically angst-ridden shoe that's about to drop, but in the meantime, she'll like it. A lot. I've never been a big Jaina fan, so feel free to disperse of her in any way you deem appropriate. Also, I want you to know that I hold you completely responsible for converting me to Jag/Shawnkyr and J/TK/Cem 'ships, but that's a story for a different thread. I am dutifully avoiding all shipper wars though. 	Amazing update Inara. You do seem to want to complicate things completely. she did note his use of the word feel as opposed to felt. Perhaps his desire for her was not yet over. I guess your one night thing Shawnkyr didn't work. I guess you'll just have to force yourself to sleep with him again. I want to see an Athan/Shawnkyr night. Who says the Chiss are reserved sexually? Maybe he can be like Jag. She needs to compare IMO. Can't wait to see if it really is Jaina that Jag'll meet or Jaina/Zekk, or someone else entirely. 	I do have to say Jaina does have the worst timing possible!!! And Athan kissing Kyrn... that was interesting twist to the story. How can she not think her and Jag sleeping together will not disrupt her engagement to Athan? Argh the thinking of chiss women... doesn't she know that Jag might be back for more? As for Jaina... who knows. I am angered at the fact Denning has portrayed her in the books so this should be interesting. Aww...well, the long post thing is something Pregnant Padme got me started on, and then I just started liking responding too much...But seriously, I all posts, even the ones that simply say "Nice Post" because it makes me feel happy that you're reading this story. As for 'ship topics.. I'm trying to by unbiased! I am! cry But it's not working out too well. I totally understand. Everyone has ships they prefer over others. In fact, based on the NJO, I liked Jag and Jaina. Dark Nest just threw everything out the window, and in the circumstances Denning created, I could no longer picture the J/J ship...(unless he decides to redeem it somehow). It's funny because when this story first started, I meant things to be slightly different. One of my readers in AHP PMed me about how I had written Jag, and in current canonical circumstances, Jag seemed more suited for Shawnkyr than Jaina. That's how the evil plot bunny came into being. So then I started plotting this fic, and I decided off the bat that Jag and Shawnkyr were tools that would be used to express my opinions on what I term as friendships. How do they start, and more importantly, how do they end? The more delicious challenge was making it believable in the context of Chiss and human cultures. But over time, I grew really attached to both Jag and Shawnkyr, and now I'm convinced that she's a minor character who actually has a lot of depth, and I wanted to give her a chance to shine. Plus, I wanted to see Jag without Jaina, because one of the greatest tragedies in the NJO, at least for me, is Jag's lack of character development. Don't get me wrong, Dear Readers. I like Jaina, and she tends to be one of my favorite people to write about. But I think I like Jag more. When I first started writing this story, it wasn't a romance, and actually, FNM still isn't a one. There might be romance in it, but the overall purpose is FNM is meant to be deeper than that. With in this mind, I hope you guys continue to read this. JediTristan: Man, poor shawnie. I think she and athan are going to grow to really like each other, if not love each other (one can only hope). Shawnkyr does like Athan, and therein lies her problem. Athan is a great guy, and he genuinely adores Shawnkyr (well, adoration in the Chiss sense). and Jaina does sound horrible, even if it is from Shawnie's perspective. Shawnkyr definitely isn't a fan of Jaina or most humans, for that matter. Poor Athan's gonna suffer for it, I guess, unless she can get a sense of perspective (no, sex isn't the ONLY thing in life.). I think Shawnkyr realizes that even though she enjoyed what she had with Jag, sex isn't enough, and she feels uncomfortable with what it reduced her too. She doesn't want Athan to act like that with her, and I think she finds his coolness more amenable than Jag's passion. DUN DUN DUNNNN, Jaina's gonna mess things up for the Chiss, I can tell.... The look at Jaina from Shawnkyr's perspective was interesting - first, because it was so scathing it made me wince, second, because it shows how not unattached she is to Jag. I cringed when I wrote Shawnkyr's thoughts there. But from what I gleaned from NJO, I don't think Shawnkyr liked Jaina, and I can't imagine her feelings growing any warmer after TUQ. She is Chiss, remember, and to her, all humans are inferior. The Fels are an exception, but even then, there is an ingrained sense of superiority that is in all Chiss, including Shawnkyr. Suffice it to say that even if Shawnkyr were not intimately involved with Jag, her regard for Jaina would not be any more friendly. She really does care for Jag, and she wants to see him happy. If anyone interferes with that happiness, she's going to take offense because she is a good friend. His best friend, in fact. To her Chiss mentality, it should be easy to separate the emotional from the physical. But Jag isn't Chiss. And...I think the prospect of Jag coming back for more delights her in some dark, secret place hidden in her pysche. I am a huge fan of Jaina as well of Jag's so the next post should be good too! 	Before I begin my review: WHERE IS MY KIT FISTO STORY? Since all your other readers noticed a lot of things I picked up upon, I'll try to comment on some different stuff. Hopefully, amongst all of us, we'll have dissected your post. Love doesn’t always come with thunder; sometimes, it comes softly. Great quote! And so true. Love does creep up on people. In all her life, Shawnkyr had yet to meet anyone who had such a bad sense of timing. I see that this description of Jaina is appreciated by all your other readers. But it's so funny and so true. Jaina does have a poor sense of timing. I wonder what side of the family she gets it from? Her tendency to disobey the chain of command and her disrespect of her elders had repelled the Chiss pilot, but worse was that Jaina encouraged this behavior in Jag. I can see why Shawnkyr finds this so offensive. Manners and obedience are bred into all Chiss (and the Fels) from the day of their birth. Jaina's inability to match the them in this regard is a failing in the eyes of the Chiss. These realizations hurt, and from that day, something uncomfortable and dark had lodged within her, a seed of unacknowledged jealousy over the fact that for Jag, Shawnkyr’s friendship was no longer enough. This is what's so great about this story. You're showing how it's the little things that start the process. The complicated feelings between Jag and Shawnkyr were set in motion by far less insignificant events - this is astoundingly like real life. How could Jaina not understand the significance of his offer? I agree with what one of your readers said. Jaina just didn't understand the significance of what Jag was trying to offer her, and Jag didn't understand why she refused. Talk about miscommunication. He traced an invisible design on her leg. AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICED THIS? Christ, Inara, he's just casually tracing designs on her leg. That's so intimate. Again, I love your style. What makes Jag and Shawnkyr so possible for me isn't that they are outwordly alike but that they are subconsciously so close. Jag's having sex with Shawnkyr was just a physical declaration of what he feels for her. Emotionally, he's been intimate with her for a lot longer. About the entire Jaina tirade: It's nice to see what Shawnkyr thinks about Jaina. I like how she doesn't view her as the enemy or as competition, and that she was honest in admitting that Jaina is beautiful and that she has a lot of good qualities. But what bothers Shawnkyr's is Jaina's humanness. That's great. “But now I am back in the military. I am a Chiss soldier, and this is where I am meant to be.” You mean you're meant to be in Shawnkyr's arms. Jag, at heart, was a family man, and he needed someone to love. He needed it desperately. I think another one of your readers said this aptly. Each of the two women in his life provide him something he needs, but he can't receive total fulfillment with either one. “Are you hurting, Shawnkyr? From last night?” he asked kindly, having known that he had been her first. Again, realism. Wow. I mean, you write things that are so intimate. Jag did take her virginity, and you're so right, a normal, caring, more experienced guy would ask her how she is feeling. I'm so in awe of you. How do you include so many details? did not want Jag to become attached to her I think it's a little late for that. Was the normal flow of these feelings blocked around other Chiss? Was this strange shifting inside herself the release of barriers that had been subconsciously broken by Jag? I love Shawnie's introspections. She's so Chiss in how she deals with her human feelings. His embrace instantly tightened as he molded her body to the hard length of his, and his mouth engaged her in a far more passionate intimacy as he stirred a sensual storm reminiscent of last night. It felt as though he was reaching out with every fiber of his being, and the thrill of it was too enthralling to stop. I love Jag's kisses almost as much as Shawnie does. the still new sensitivity to her breasts More wonderful detail. She's not familiar with unfulfilled desire, so of course this would be new for her. And I love the biology of it. (you go, you scientist girl) He was observing her with a strange look in his eyes, taking in her disheveled hair and askew robe. Jaggy is falling for her too. Jaggy is tender with her. Shawnie's getting dressed part: I love the flashbacks mirroring her actions. Now that Jag has done all these things to her, she's going to remember it even while performing the most simple of actions like brushing her hair. Just thinking about last night sent a tiny jolt of electricity right through her body. Unconsciously, she raised trembling fingers to lips that still felt bruised and tender. She would be useless all morning, unable to think about anything except how his mouth had tasted on hers as his arms had held her close, the hot, musky scent of his powerful body, how he had felt around and above and inside her. Though she had come to him untouched, she had known what to expect. But she had not expected it to be like…that. She had never lost all control before, to the point where everything blurred together and the galaxy went away, and she did not know where she ended and he began. She was not even sure of what exactly she had said and done during parts of it…but she could definitely remember enough to bring a solid flush to her cheeks. Words can't do these past two paragraphs justice. So I will try to use smiley icons to explain myself: Wow. Anytime I read FNM, all I want to do is have sex with Jag. After all, if the Chiss people were reduced to what she was right now, the Ascendancy would be leveled within a day. Her logic is so funny. Despite the impressive framework, it was his eyes that drew and dominated, piercing red eyes, all the more compelling for being set off by thick black lashes and arched eyebrows that carried more than a hint of arrogance. They scanned her expression with too sharp an intelligence for Shawnkyr’s comfort. God, I love Athan too. I love the physical description of him. Who do we know that would write a fic with two men who both deserve the girl? And whose readers are nearly evenly split on who they want Shawnie to end up with? raise hand INARA. There was purpose written in his eyes, indivertible purpose. I bet Athan knows something is going on with her and Jaggy. There is an orchestral concert on Csalpar I would like to take you to. Athan just asked Shawnie out on a date!!! This is so amusing yet sad. He's trying to walk get to first base with Shawnie while Jag's made several home runs with her. Shawnkyr and Athan were alike. They matched. And I'll bet that before the Jag fiasco, matching with Athan would have been enough for her. But neither of them said they were happy, Shawnkyr reflected, since happiness was not a state to be sought. Chiss mentality is so different and alien but so appropriate. If they had said they were happy, it would have been out of character. He released her hand but touched the small of her back as he guided her towards the turbolifts. Athan touches her too. He clearly feels some sort of posession over her for him to touch her like that. I'm pretty sure he doesn't touch the random female officer who minds the sensor station. Athan stared back at her, his eyes widening as he perceived her intentions. Hesitating, he lowered his head as one cool hand tilted her chin. She inhaled the fresh, sharp scent about him as his closed mouth very carefully and politely rested upon hers. Finding no resistance, his lips, as cool as his fingers, opened as they kissed her expertly. Yet his hands did not touch her otherwise, and he did not draw her any closer. I like how his kiss is different from Jag. I noticed that you did not say whether Shawnkyr liked it or not, and I don't think Athan is as passionless as he seems. The difference between him and Jag is that Athan is restraining what he feels whereas Jag (with Shawnie's permission) releases his passion. He hesitated near the entrance as he looked at the occupants of the table and frowned slightly at her absence from the group, but looking up, his face warmed instantly when he saw that he was mistaken. What a clever, subtle way to tell us that Jag is smitten. He sees her face, and he's immediately happier. What other evidence does one need to determine how he feels? His reactions to her are more honest than what he says - and from what he thinks. “Yes, I imagine the entire galaxy is aware of my personal life. I can, without a doubt, thank sludge news reporters for that.” That's what happens when you're a Fel and everyone wants to get into your pants. Just be careful, or the tabloids will post pics of you and Shawnie having sex next to the pool. “But Knight Solo is not yet our enemy.” Athan spoke up now. “Though she is a Joiner, she is still an acknowledged member of the GFFA Jedi Order, and as such, communications with her are permitted under certain conditions.” Your Chiss politics and intrigues are great. It's wonderful that you delved into all aspects of these people - culture, politics, military, romance, prejudices, xenophobia. I think you have them down better than most fanfic writers have humans down. “Jedi or not, she has no business being in Ascendancy space,” she finally said. Or near Jag. I'm just watching out for your interests, Shawnie. and she must arrive either by herself or with another Jedi. What do I smell? I smell...I smell... DRAMA. Jag looked at the faces around the room, his eyes lingering a few seconds longer on Shawnkyr before saying, “I realize that Knight Solo's presence on this ship is a matter of great discomfort It seems that though he is addressing something obvious to his officers, there is a second, deeper meaning here that he intends only for Shawnkyr. The Chiss don’t know yet that Jaina was duped by Jacen. Like they'll even care.

Now to the question: could he be just as passionate as Shawnkyr? I definitely want to find out! I think he suspects something, and if he's really that smart, he'll realize that showing her true love is the only way to get her back! Though what would he say if he knew what happened between Jag and his Shawnkyr? I don't really know, but I always thought that sex before marriage is a taboo in Chiss socitey - restricted as they are, it would fit. For something to become a taboo, it has to be a problem, and I think that most if not all Chiss don't engage in marital sex to make it a problem. Kind of like stealing, I imagine, or brawling. I bet the Chiss don't really have taboos about those either. I'm guessing no one knows about Shawnie and Jaggy. I'm sure both of their families would get really upset too. And about Athan - I really like the guy. And in other circumstances, I'd want him to get the girl. But there's so much at stake here that Shawnie choosing Athan is like the easy way out, and they've gone so far that all the turmoil will be for nothing. If you don't mind, Inara, I'd like to take a quick poll. I know that Inara already hs the end of this story mapped out, but how do the rest of you readers feel about Shawnkyr? Do you think she should she end up with Jag or Athan, and why? I'm curious because this is such a novel approach to Jag, Shawnkyr, and the Chiss. This story really throws conventional ships and rules out the window.

A flare of anger spiked within her as she thought about Jaina Solo. ohhh...I would give this more credence if I didn't know that Shawnie was luke warm (mara-warm) on Jaina already...before she and Jag...well you know Had the message arrived even yesterday, then Jag might not have spent the night with Shawnkyr. OI! She still doesn't get it does she? Jaina has nothing to do with this. This isn't so much about Jag having or not having Jaina around. It's all about his possessory feelings toward Shawnie. And I'll tell you all now, I'm writing this up in the board doc...so no spell check Conversely, had the message arrived a few days later, then she and Jag could have adjusted to their altered relationship more easily. Response A: You just keep telling yourself that! Response B: Is it jsut me or does Shawnie's thought imply she thinks this will continue. After five years away from him, it was doubtful that the Joiner Jedi was returning to make amends with Jag. Possessive much? More likely, she wanted to plead the Killik cause to friendly ears. I'll give her that one. But the Jedi pilot was also undisciplined, brash, and often rude. And there was just something emotionally selfish about her. Her tendency to disobey the chain of command and her disrespect of her elders had repelled the Chiss pilot, Don't worry Dahhly, I'll shield you from the rotten tomatos headed your way for that. What Shawnkyr had understood later, upon her return to Ascendancy space, was that it was Jag’s right to indulge in his heritage, that no matter how much Shawnkyr wished otherwise, he was not like her, would never want to be like her, and that Jaina gave Jag something Shawnkyr never could. These realizations hurt, and from that day, something uncomfortable and dark had lodged within her, a seed of unacknowledged jealousy over the fact that for Jag, Shawnkyr’s friendship was no longer enough. I swore I wasn't going to use the words profound or profundity in this post. So I lugged out the Thesaurus but was underwhelmed by the offerings. Anyway...this is a fascinating paragraph because it suggests that the idea of Jag and Shawnie being more than friends or the fact that they can't be, has already been an issue for Shawnie. She has already grieved for the 'fact' that she can not be more to Jag than his friend and that one day another woman will, by virture of her position as Jag's wife, mean more to him than she does. So, basically, Shawnie was a couple of years ahead of Jag on this train of thought. Yet still, she had been pleased that he had found some measure of peace, and though she would never completely approve, she liked seeing his eyes light up in happiness. Wow, that's a good freind. To accept that he is moving on without her and be glad simply because he is... sigh And along with Cem and Wyn Cem... but that is a vignette for another day... She had been astonished when he returned from Alliance space not only lacking a wife How could Jaina not understand the significance of his offer? Because that would require her looking pas the end of her own nose? hides behind Inara as tomatoes fly even Mara Jade and Luke Skywalker had almost been barred from Chiss territory Wellllll...I don't usually invite people back aftert the blow up my secret bases either... And then she had become a Joiner No matter what happens...Jaina will never win this hand...and not that the 'pot' has been sweetened...with a little Jag honey...Jaina's even more persona nongrata. Even if she wanted Jag back, and even if he wanted her, it would not be possible. Joiners would never be allowed to enter Ascendancy space, not after the destruction of five entire families. Which leads one to think that it really would come down to Jaina or Shawnie... Instead of comforting Jag, as a good friend ought to, she was running through a mental tirade of someone who was now part insect Bwah! He traced an invisible design on her leg There's that whole intimacy thing again... “The Jaina of five years ago no longer exists.” He looked tired. “And I have changed as well.” uhm... “I find myself aggrieved at how easily you wish to be rid of me, Ailen Mel.” So Cem didn't get all the flirting genes... “As much as I like the Alliance, the Ascendancy is my home. My family is here. My friends are here. You are here.” yeah His fingers idly toyed with her hair as he continued OK...there is a lot of sum-un sum-um going on here for two people who are just friends who but who just shared a really intimate expereince... “I just want you to know…that you are not a replacement for Jaina. What I feel for you for you is different, separate.” that is a really loaded statement. Is it just me or is he telling her that he has deep feelings for her that Jaina can not compete with? she did note his use of the word feel as opposed to felt Oh good, Shawnie noticed that too. Perhaps his desire for her was not yet over ::Understatement of the post winner:: “I know that if our situations were reversed, you would do the same for me.” She cocked her head. “And...if it has not passed, I will be here for you as long as you need me.” [face_jawmeetdesk] So...it really wasn't a huge sacrifice for her...I'm not going to acknowledge my own pun possibility... She shook her head. “No Tako, you did not.” Do I need to once again give my 'nicknames and their direct correlation to depth of emotions' dissertation? “If you are not otherwise engaged, have dinner with me tonight.” When she looked at him in surprise, he added, “Just dinner.” [face_skeptical] she did not want Jag to become attached to her and they call Jacen Captian Oblivious... Jag was her friend, and Athan was already assured of her hand in marriage. Shawnie is such a bottom line girl... Her mind and body were in such a whirl of inner chaos that she was not aware of lifting her arms. The instinct to press closer, to hold onto this moment, to see it through as far as it went, made her place her arms around his neck. Whatever Jag had awakened in her would not be denied, and she decided that she might as well enjoy the moment while it lasted. She stared at him in confusion, seeing the tension in his face and body, not understanding anything except that he had stopped kissing her. So...the boy knows how to use his mouth? ::Here are my favorite bits from the scene where Shawnie is trying to get dressed:: Entering her bedroom once again...images of their bodies tangled together flashed through her mind. ...she struggled to compose herself. Pulling out a fresh undertunic, she had to button it slowly because her fingers kept fumbling. Jag’s knowing hands had easily slipped her clothes off her body. Finally finished with the arduous task of dressing herself... She would be useless all morning, unable to think about anything except how his mouth had tasted on hers as his arms had held her close, the hot, musky scent of his powerful body, how he had felt around and above and inside her. And she suddenly realized why humans, people that she had previously shaken her head at, the people who abandoned all, thrown away their careers, duties, and security for the sake of such passion, acted as they did. If they experienced something even remotely like what she had experienced last night with Jag, then she understood perfectly well. If she were human, she would do the same thing. After all, if the Chiss people were reduced to what she was right now, the Ascendancy would be leveled within a day OK...why this is so great: it's not just about the character but how you articulate what she's seeing/feeling. The emotions are common but the way you put it is stunning and I think part of what is so beautiful is how universal her feelings are but most of us couldn't articulate it while we are having the expeirence let alone create these thoughts in a character. Seriously, we've (all (well, maybe not all of us...) had those morning afters where we can't function, but the rest of us are just drooling idiots and sort of content to take it at that, to read a charcter who thinks these things is amazing. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “I knew I would find you here.” Sooooo not impressed that Athan found her...I mean...even I would have looked there. “Shawnkyr, are you satisfied with our arrangement?” ouch...the uber-un-Jag Shawnkyr and Athan were alike. They matched. FACPOV “I am,” she stated in an even tone. “Are you?” Hesitating, he lowered his head as one cool hand tilted her chin. She inhaled the fresh, sharp scent about him as his closed mouth very carefully and politely rested upon hers. Finding no resistance, his lips, as cool as his fingers, opened as they kissed her expertly. Yet his hands did not touch her otherwise, and he did not draw her any closer As I said: The Uber-Un-Jag. she wondered yet again at Jaina’s unlooked for transmission. This might be my favorite line of the post! communications received a message coded in Idol Smasher Love that name, especially being used by Jaina "The Goddess" Solo To Cmdr Fel. Would like to meet and discuss situation before it escalates. Please send response back at this frequency. Knight Jaina Solo. Has Jaina been reading Griffin and Sabine again? shakes own head at the archaicness of that reference “Yes, I imagine the entire galaxy is aware of my personal life. I can, without a doubt, thank sludge news reporters for that.” As I said...I WILL be using that in F&L “But Knight Solo is not yet our enemy.” Athan spoke up now. “Though she is a Joiner, she is still an acknowledged member of the GFFA Jedi Order, and as such, communications with her are permitted under certain conditions.” And undoubtedly Athan hopes Jaina will distract Jag and leave Shawnie to him... With a patient air, Athan explained, "Yes, but if we agree to meet her Jag will be occupied and not try to make time with my best girl." -----signature----- Is Anakin still dead? 	Inara, I am a Chiss/Thrawn lover and lurker, but this past week I finally finished catching up on Shezan's Hitchhiker and your wonderful Friends No More. This story is very cool, and I love being able to learn about the Chiss. Even though Thrawn isn't in it (he is so charismatic, is it any wonder I am so obsessed with him?), I'm very caught up in Shawnkyr's dilemma. I only read brief parts of NJO, and I didn't like the Chiss in it, and I didn't like J/J, so I think it'd be great if Shawnkyr and Jag ended up together. But Athan is cool too, so I can't complain either way. Hurry up and update soon! -----signature----- I like the way your pants fit.

	Inara, thank you for the pm's. Life has been busy lately. Hopefully I will have longer replies to the next posts. Chapter 12 - Wow! Hot! Well done. I don't know what else to say. Chapter 13 - Jag, at heart, was a family man, and he needed someone to love. He needed it desperately. That is the part that attracts me the most to Jag's character, I think.
