Poor Jag. He really needs to figure out a way to get over Shawnkyr but I don't think that's going to happen sad Though it's good to see Shawnkyr getting along well with her betrothed. Maybe Jaina will get over her bugginess.... Great post!

I'm half-asleep, but I really wanted to reply to say:

Jag wanted to turn away. Did they already have to act like a married couple? Granted, Shawnkyr and Athan had not acted out of the ordinary. She was just being courteous, and had it been anyone other than Athan, Jag would not have blinked. But now that Jag knew of their future relationship, every action seemed exacerbated.

He felt as if he were being pushed to the shadows, fighting off this unknown threat to what he considered his. The sight of Shawnkyr standing next to Athan was like a knife to his heart, and he was forced to admit that this was how things were meant to be. He was drowning in a wave of truth, caught in an undertow of pain.

I loved that! love It's just so realistic that Jag would be that jealous. grin

Ok, Inara, I'm not a J/Jer by any stretch of the word (I haven't every liked Jag as a character since the book where Shawnkyr gives him her stripes), but Jag/Shawnkyr has always been a possibility in my mind.

The way you're writing this here is very logical. It flows and follows what I see the Chiss sulture as doing, I love the arrange marriage and Shawnkyr's reaction to it.

Jag's got a lot of character in this, and while I still don't think he's a good match for Jaina, I think he's a perfect match for Shawnkyr. All of the reasons are in your story. A good friendship can be the building ground for a deeper relationship or marriage and you're going very slowly to show that not all things are simple - which is wonderful!

The Chiss/human pariring seems plausible, especially to a human who is more Chiss in action than human. The progression in this is very believeable. Bravo! applause

Overall, I love the premis, and, if you'sending PMs, I'd love to get one when you update this story happy If not, I'll add you to my watched user list wink

Excellent story thus far.

Edit: I forgot to comment on Cem, but the way you write him is magnificent and I adore him. Reminds me of a brother of mine when I need advice!

TheCrazyRodian: It has a note of depth that the vast majority of others can't quite imitate.

Welcome! I love new readers:) And thanks for the compliment...a bit of flattery goes a long way. tongue I'm glad you're joining in on this venture into new territory...

jags_gurl: Heh...Jaggie's gonna give her a flippin' heart attack!

All I'm gonna say is that Jag definitely knows how to make a woman happy in my universe :0

And Athan? I like him but the relationship with Shawnie...

I'm getting fond of Athan myself...I hate to cause him heartache...

Shawnkyr's a pretty sharp girl, so let's hope she starts putting two and seven together...Jag's avoiding her....He doesn't like Athan...he touched her face...touched her lips!...has been acting irritable.... Come on, Kyr!

Good thing she has Cem around to point her in the right direction happy

summerdaisy: Let me take a moment to gloat...since I suggested a J/S pairing towards you...except you take it the complicated way and try to make it into a realistic story as opposed to the fluff I was hoping for.

Stop giving me plot bunnies!!! And as tempting it is the right fluff, the Chiss and fluff just wasn't working out. That's almost like writing Hutt fluff...way too OOC. But I will promise to have lots of sweet moments rose

I really like what you do with the Chiss (I'm gonna go and review Pawn to Queen after this), and I like how you don't villify the Chiss like a lot of writers do in their Jag stories. This story is a really nice exposure to very mysterious people.

Thanks! I love the Chiss, and I always get so sad when I read fics where the Chiss turn out to be evil and turn against the Fels...or how the Fels end up leaving the Ascendancy. Nooooo. Fels = Csilla. Jag = CEDF. happy

I love Cem. Great job in forming a character out of a name that fell off of Wyn Fel's lips and cryptically mentioned by Formbi. I think you have created a Cem Fel fan girl out of me (and I sincerely hope Cem is a guy...it'd be so embarrassing if Cem was a girl). He interacts wonderfully with Jag, just the kind of little brother everyone would want.

This entire fic started out as a fangirl fantasy. tongue And if I had a brother, I'd want one like Cem as well - probably why I wrote him that way.

Shawnkyr is great. You show how attached she is to her friend but she's still so Chiss. I like how she refers to Jag at times as "human." And she's not apologetic about thinking she's superior to him. It's what keeps her from becoming OOC.

Thanks! I was worried about that, and I didn't want her to be human, just a Chiss who's developed some odd quirks after hanging around a human for a long time. happy

Jag is wonderful here too. He's so lost and lonely. His girlfriend has become a bug, and he has the hots for his friend who is gonna marry someone else. Sigh. You always did like giving him a hard time.

It's how I like showing my love for him.

I even like Athan. YOu've got to be the only person I know who has made an OC out of a Chiss character that's actually likeable. Poor guy. On one hand I want him to get shafted by Shawnkyr, but then I want him to get the girl as well.

*hands a distraught Athan to Mini* Give him some LURV....

WynssaStarflare:

Poor Jag. He really needs to figure out a way to get over Shawnkyr but I don't think that's going to happen

Jag needs to find some happiness. Where is his fairy godmother when he needs her? thinking

JadeSolo: It's just so realistic that Jag would be that jealous.

Isn't it? Even if he doesn't love her, it's still pretty rough seeing your best friend married to someone else...especially when you're all alone like he is... cry

Jade_Max: Welcome! I'm glad you've found your way to this story!

Ok, Inara, I'm not a J/Jer by any stretch of the word (I haven't every liked Jag as a character since the book where Shawnkyr gives him her stripes), but Jag/Shawnkyr has always been a possibility in my mind.

It's always been a possibility for me as well. That's why it always bothered me that there aren't any Jag/Shawnkyr fics...but there are pairings for almost every other person. And perhaps this is just a personal thing, but I have always thought Shawnkyr a better match for Jag than Tahiri - but that pairing seems to be growing in popularity.

The way you're writing this here is very logical. It flows and follows what I see the Chiss sulture as doing, I love the arrange marriage and Shawnkyr's reaction to it.

Part of the reason I started writing this story was to flesh out Chiss culture. As fun as it is to speculate J/S, it's hard to imagine because of the way Chiss culture has been described in profic. So I wanted to ask myself - can a xenophobic culture open up in the most personal way possible?

Jag's got a lot of character in this, and while I still don't think he's a good match for Jaina, I think he's a perfect match for Shawnkyr. All of the reasons are in your story. A good friendship can be the building ground for a deeper relationship or marriage and you're going very slowly to show that not all things are simple - which is wonderful!

The Chiss/human pariring seems plausible, especially to a human who is more Chiss in action than human. The progression in this is very believeable.

Thanks! I was worried that what I described was OOC, but I'm glad it isn't. There has to be reasons...and the right sort of circumstances for such a pairing in a rigid society like the Chiss.

Overall, I love the premis, and, if you'sending PMs, I'd love to get one when you update this story happy If not, I'll add you to my watched user list

I'd be happy to send you a PM...expect one soon!

Edit: I forgot to comment on Cem, but the way you write him is magnificent and I adore him. Reminds me of a brother of mine when I need advice!

Yay! Another Cem fan! I wish I could just write a Cem fic right now...but I better wait until I develop him more.

Hmm, I don't even know if Cem is a boy or girl...I hope he's a boy! wink

Not being a big fan of Jag (more indifferent than anything), I kind of avoided this story.

But, being stranded in the airport for six hours got me bored, so, while browsing through, I decided to see what it was all about.

I like this story almost as much as AHP - the writing is exceptional (as I've come to expect), the story has a good pacing (and really nice indication of TIME!!!) and I've grown very attached to both characters.

Never was a big fan of the Chiss either, but I've grown to appreciate your view of them, and Shawnkyr is a much more indepth character in your telling than I've ever felt she was in the books.

From now on, I'm just going to read everything you write tongue

Again, thanks! I've always liked Shawnkyr, and I really want to give her life, so to speak, in the best way possible. She's such an overlooked and flat character even in fan fiction...so I had to rescue her. happy

~ Shawnkyr gets some answers ~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One man in a thousand, Solomon says, Will stick more close than a brother. But the thousandth man will stand by your side to the gallows foot-and after.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Cselarn

“Blow them out of the sky, Commander Shawnkyr,” Jag ordered quietly.

“Yes, sir.” Her voice came back to him, coolly efficient.

The CEDF Third Fleet had run into a group of rogue Yuuzhan Vong ships that had wandered into the Chiss buffer zone. The rogue Vong had always been hostile to the Chiss, and they kept on sending pilots on suicide missions into Chiss space.

Jag had fought the Vong many times before, but the sight of a coral skipper caused his heart to stop every time. There were not that many today, only two dozen, but Jag had still deployed two squadrons of clawcraft. He did not want to lose any pilots over the Vong. Not anymore.

He moved away from the tactical display angrily. For the hundredth time since the skirmish had started, Jag wanted to leave the bridge and jump into his clawcraft. Who was he kidding? He was a pilot, not a fleet commander.

But the CEDF had entrusted him with this duty, and Jag would never shirk his responsibilities.

“I wish I could be out there with you, Ailen Mel,” he whispered to himself. As much as he wanted Shawnkyr to remain on board, she was his wing commander, and her presence in space battles was necessary. Besides Jag, she was the best pilot out here. Her place was there, in the thick of the fighting.

It did not stop him from being worried. At least before, he had been there with her. They had watched each other’s backs. Now a green pilot straight out of the academy had taken his place as her wing.

He looked up to see Athan exit the bridge turbolift. “Permission to enter the bridge, Commander Fel?” he asked politely.

Athan did not really have to ask – he did outrank Jag – but the courtesy was appreciated. “Permission granted,” he said. He beckoned Athan closer.

“How is it progressing?” asked the Intel officer softly.

Jag pointed to the tactical display. “As well as can be expected.” He hissed. “To be honest, skirmishes with the Vong are difficult to predict. They are always more interested in suicide than anything else. If our pilots are not careful, they will find themselves rammed by a coral skipper.”

“Does that happen often?”

“Often enough,” affirmed Jag. He pointed to a specific clawcraft that glowed green. “That is Shawnkyr.”

Athan fixed his eyes on her ship. “She is at the most concentrated zone of engagement.”

Jag nodded grimly. “That is Shawnkyr for you. She is never one to shy away from danger.”

The Chiss colonel was silent, but Jag detected a great deal of concern in his red eyes. Athan is worried. And though he did not like the intel officer, did not like the fact that he was taking Shawnkyr away from him, Jag suddenly felt close to this man. Right now, they both wanted the same thing: for Shawnkyr to return to them safely.

“Colonel, sometimes I like to view engagements from the observation deck and give orders from there. The tactical displays can often mislead battle coordinators.” He gestured for Athan to follow. “Would you like to come with me?”

“Thank you, Commander. I would.” The two men, plus a few of Jag’s tactical officers, made their way into the wide room on top of the bridge. It offered an almost three hundred and sixty degree view of the space around them. It was perfect for those who wished to use sight as opposed to computer tracking.

Jag spoke into his headset. “Commander Shawnkyr, we have marked fourteen coral skippers as down. What is your status for the other ten?”

“Most will be down momentarily. These ships are trying to get past the clawcrafts to ram into the cruisers. However, there are two Vong pilots that are exceptionally good.”

Jag raised his eyebrows. For Shawnkyr to dole out a compliment like that…“Commander, do not attempt to take out those ships on your own.”

“Your warning is noted, Commander Fel.”

Athan turned to look at Jag. “Does that mean that she will obey your order?”

“Probably not.” Jag rubbed at his temples. “She has spent too much time with Rebels in the Alliance.”

“You mean with humans,” corrected Athan.

He fixed his eyes upon Athan’s red ones. “Yes, with humans.” The challenge in Jag’s voice dared the Chiss officer to contradict him.

“Shawnkyr is different from other Chiss women.”

“What mean you by that?” asked Jag suspiciously.

“She is…” Athan trailed off as she searched for the right word, “more sentimental...something I believe she owes to being acquainted with you.”

Jag arched his brow. “As for that, I cannot apologize for it. Shawnkyr chose to associate with me. And I daresay that her personality characteristics have rubbed off on me as well. It is the way of friendship, Colonel.”

“Is that all it is?” he finally asked.

“I am afraid I do not understand your question,” returned Jag smoothly.

Athan held his gaze for several moments, waging a silent battle with Jag that was just as intense as the battle outside. “I see.” He turned back to the viewport and watched the last of the coral skippers explode.

“Return to the ship with your squadrons, Shawnkyr,” said Jag into his headset. “And well done.”

“Thank you, sir.”

Jag nodded to the colonel. “If you will excuse me, I must return to the bridge.”

“Of course, Commander.” Athan remained behind, his eyes still fixed on the stars around him as he considered the disturbing implications of his conversation with Jag.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After his duty shift was over, he made his way down to Shawnkyr’s quarters. Though the space battle had been over a long time ago, he had been unable to see her due to his duties on the bridge.
Sometimes, he really hated being in fleet command. He would give almost anything to return to the fighter corps.
He found her kneeling on the floor of her room, stacks of datapads all around her. “What are you doing?” he asked as he stepped over a particularly tall pile.
“I misplaced a statistics report on engine performances. I looked in my office and could not find it, so it must be here.” She sighed in frustration. “Tako, I am never this careless.”
“You have been distracted recently,” he said reprovingly as he bent to help her sort through the datapads.
“As have you,” she shot back.
Jag chuckled slightly. “What a pair we are. By the way, Cem is on his way with a bottle of purloined liquor. He wants to celebrate because he had the second highest amount of kills this morning.”
“Cem is something else,” she grumbled. “Though I could use a drink.” She glared at him. “Before I knew you, I hardly ever drank.”
He threw her a cheeky smile – something more often seen on Cem’s face. “I only want what’s best for you, my friend. Ah, success!” He waved the datapad in front of Shawnkyr’s face. “What would your life be like without me, Ailen Mel?”
She looked at him reprovingly. “Do you really wish for me to answer that question?”
“Hmm. Better yet, keep those thoughts to yourself.” He noticed with concerned eyes that she was slightly hunched, her posture not as ramrod straight as usual. “What happened to your back?” he asked.
She flinched ever so slightly. “After this today’s skirmish, I spent all of this afternoon in one of the new clawcraft prototypes. Unfortunately, they had not yet adjusted the seats, and since I am taller than most, I was forced to sit cramped for several hours.”
Deciding that it would be cruel to leave her feeling so sore, he guided her to a nearby stool. “I am not surprised your back hurts," Jag replied with care. Years of watching pilots in cramped cockpits had taught him to recognize the signs although he had seldom made any allowances. Shawnkyr was a completely different case, however.
"Relax," he told her, and truthfully she was helpless to do otherwise as his surprisingly strong hands began to seek out the knots and kinks in her shoulders. After far too brief an interval he stopped, but his chair squeaked on the floor as he swiftly placed it behind her and resumed his massage.
"Take this off," he ordered, and Shawnkyr shrugged off her uniform jacket. Underneath was a black tank top, and the warmth of his hands soaked through the thin material. Once more he told her to relax, and she mindlessly complied. His deep voice caressed her nerve endings just as his hands did, working their way down her spine in tandem.
His palms spanned the small of her back, thumbs digging at the muscles and forcing inarticulate murmurs from her on regular intervals. He paused slightly as he reached her waist.
"May I?" he questioned softly.
When she nodded, his fingertips began to make firm circles on the flat of her backside, soothing the muscles while carefully avoiding her hips. Her back arched as the nerves fired off, but he never stopped the massage.
"Lean back," he urged her. As her shoulders drifted back to lean against his chest, he inched forward to frame her hips with his thighs, then immediately regretted it. Her shudders and sighs were doing extraordinary things to him, and her body was slumped against his, relaxed as only a badly needed and well done massage could make a person.
Shawnkyr could not remember when she had closed her eyes, but her back was warm where it rested against his chest. His hands, which looked so unremarkable when still, were the hands of an artist as they worked her neck and shoulders, gripping her upper arms in rhythmic contractions to make the muscles release their tension. He found the tendon at the point of each elbow, digging in until her little fingers twitched. Her forearms, bare under his touch, were squeezed and stroked in turn as he progressed down her arms to her wrists and hands. His fingers eventually gripped her palms, rubbing each bone and knuckle, until Shawnkyr thought she might just melt into a puddle on the floor.
Her lax hands were left draped down her sides, and for a moment Shawnkyr thought he would leave. This was proved false, though, when his hands settled at her waist, gently stroking her sides with light yet firm palm presses, easing the tightly drawn skin with the heat of his hands.
“Where did you learn such techniques?” she asked, her voice soft with contentment.
“I was introduced to a woman who owns a very renowned spa on Chandrila.”
“Make sure you do not advertise these dubious skills you picked up from your human friends,” she murmured. “Or you will find yourself as the personal masseuse of Aristocra Formbi.”
Jag was alternately torn between bolting from Shawnkyr’s room to staying in this position longer. Having served with her for so long, he had been in close proximity to her many a time, but in light of his recent feelings, he did not think it wise – especially since he wanted Shawnkyr to continue remaining oblivious to it.
Thankfully, Cem arrived just in time. He stood in the doorway, gaping at his two friends who were in a most unorthodox position.
“What are you waiting for? A formal invitation? Come in!” he ordered Cem.
A befuddled Cem entered the room and took a seat nearby. Shawnkyr shifted away from Jag, unable to see the look of flushed embarrassment on Jag’s face. As comprehension lit Cem’s face, Jag pushed his chair away from Shawnkyr while frantically looking at his brother with an expression that all too plainly pleaded for help.
“So, Shawnkyr, did I tell you about the love letters I received from those twin girls on Bastion?” Cem said in an attempt to fill the awkward silence.
Jag made his way to the door. “I am due for a holomeeting with Admiral Rekan. Both of you enjoy yourselves.”
After he left, Shawnkyr fixed Cem with a stern gaze. “What is the matter with him?”
“He is tired, Kyrn, He has been up for the past twenty four hours.”
“No, I am asking why Jag is acting so differently lately.”
Cem swallowed hard. So, Shawnkyr had noticed the difference. She had not discerned the reason, caught up as she had been in the fleet activities and Athan, but she had noticed. He wondered how much he could reveal without actually betraying his brother.
“If my brother has been behaving oddly, it is because of late he has been sorely burdened with a problem,” Cem said carefully.
“As I suspected,” Shawnkyr said. “Can you not tell me what this problem is?”
“He has forbidden me to speak of it to anyone.”
“And what have you done to help him?”
Cem shook his head. “I am powerless to do so. Only one person can help Jag, and unfortunately, he does not believe that person can – or will.”
“You talk like a mystic,” Shawnkyr complained. “All allusions and no substance. Please speak plainly. What is this thing that burdens Jag?”
Cem hesitated. He was torn between keeping his brother’s confidence and seeking a solution to his brother’s problem. His dilemma was not made any easier when the solution could very well be sitting right beside him.
A mental image of his older brother came to mind. Jag was deeply unhappy, and it smote Cem’s heart to see him that way.
“He desires but his desire is not returned,” Cem finally stated.
Shawnkyr was surprised. “How can this be? He has always been capable of capturing any woman he desires.” She paused, and then, “Does this have to do with Jaina Solo?”
“It is not any of his past lovers who haunts his thoughts and bedevils his heart,” Cem said. “He has come to yearn for a most unlikely person.” Here he hesitated, uncertain whether to continue. But Shawnkyr was looking at him intently, waiting for him to do so. He let his breath out. He had not been aware that he had been holding it. “It is no human I speak of, Shawnkyr.”
Her mouth dropped open at that. “No human?” she repeated after a long pause. “Why did he not tell me? Did he fear that I would recoil from him?”
“Would you?” Cem countered with his own question.
Shawnkyr fell silent. “I would not do that,” she said slowly. “How could I? He is as a brother to me.”
Cem stared at her hard. “Are you certain? He believes you will. You have shown yourself to be uncomfortable about interracial relationships. It is why he refuses to share this with you.”
“I would not hurt him in that manner,” Shawnkyr protested. “How great is this passion of his?”
“Great enough. He does not know if it is something that will eventually pass, he only knows it needs to be assuaged. Perhaps only then will he be released from this...obsession.”
“Then why not speak to this woman? Is she not inclined towards Jag?”
“No, she does not desire his affection.”
“But Jag is different. He is fair of face, high of lineage, and as skillful officer as anyone could wish for. Surely this woman would not mind doing Jag this one favor?”
Cem stared at her disbelievingly, and then laughed, an ironic edge to his mirth. “Do you hear what you are saying? Would you do this?”
Shawnkyr stared back then nodded in rueful acknowledgement of her friend’s astonishment. “You are right, those were foolish words,” she said apologetically.
Cem paused for a heart beat. “Not if you meant them,” he said in a low voice.
Shawnkyr frowned. “What do you mean?” When Cem failed to respond at once, she said, “What are you suggesting, Cem? That I have influence over this woman and can persuade her?”
“You might say that,” Cem answered. He was looking so meaningfully at her that Shawnkyr suddenly shivered with unknown foreboding. A thought began to form in her mind, a thought that seemed so preposterous that she was hard put to give it any credence.
“Who is this woman, Cem?” she demanded softly, warily. “Who is she whom Jag grieves over?”
Cem took a deep, steadying breath. “He will have my head for this, but it needs to be said for his sake,” he murmured. He looked pleadingly at Shawnkyr. “If I tell you now, it is because I desire happiness for my brother,” he told her. “I hope you will not only cause him more pain.”
“I swear I will not hurt him.”
A short silence. Then – “You are the one, Shawnkyr.”
Shawnkyr’s mouth fell open. She was unable to speak or move. Indeed, for a long moment she could not even think. And when she did her first rational thought was, Why did I not see it?
“Do you understand now why he has been hostile to Athan? Why he always follows you in dangerous situations?” Cem asked softly. Shawnkyr turned dazed eyes to him. “He was protecting you. He cannot bear the thought that evil might befall you.”
Shawnkyr’s red eyes bored into him with an intensity that would have, had Cem been unused to her, made him retreat in fear. “As one would protect his mate,” she stated evenly.
Cem nodded. “What will you do now?” he asked worriedly.
“I will talk to him when time and circumstance allow.”
“Do not make me regret telling you this.”
“I would never wittingly hurt him.” Shawnkyr hesitated. “But I cannot control his feelings or his response to mine.”
“Shawnkyr...”
She heard the note of warning and worry in her friend’s voice. She held up her hand to forestall any further words on Cem’s part. “I will do my best to help him. Come what may, he is still my friend and as dear to me as a brother.”
She rose and poured them both drinks. Feeling somewhat drained, Cem stood and followed her. The problem is he no longer sees you only as a friend or sister, Shawnkyr. Please remember that.” He spared another thought for his brother. Forgive me if I have done ill in telling her, Jag.
Some Notes:
- Chiss capital ships, according to Outbound Flight, have viewing areas where tactical officers often coordinate a battle by sight as opposed to using a computer.
- Common military courtesy dictates that a visiting officer must ask permission before stepping onto the bridge.
Hmm Jag must be really depressed after Jaina left him that he has such obsession over Shawnkyr...
This might end not so good as it might look like now...
Oh no. I don't see how this can turn out happy.... Damn relationships! They are too complicated.
Ok, I seem to have missed a couple of posts.
I'll go back in a minute but I couldn't help but get into this chapter. And all I have to say is: Where can I get a back rub like that?
You're writing is amazing Inara. And this storyline is great.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've have to go back three chapters and catch up.
“Great enough. He does not know if it is something that will eventually pass, he only knows it needs to be assuaged. Perhaps only then will he be released from this...obsession.” When I was reading this, I kept seeing the part in Moulin Rouge when Christian's like... "Thank you for curing me of my ridiculous obsession with love!"
... this better not end like that...
Moving on - shock What! Cem, you're a loser! I'm never trusting you with ANY secrets...
I can't believe he told her! And...Shawnie...won't love him back...This going to get cry in a flash!
Jag is gonna kill Cem - I would too...
But I guess he did the right thing...but she...and he....oh man!
Bravo, Inara!
praying Please don't make Jag regret telling Cem, and Cem regret telling Kyrn!
You've got me hanging on the edge of a cliff here - when can we expect a resolution ?
whistling
I have to go play basketball, otherwise I'd be cutting and pasting my favorite parts...all I have to say is reading about that massage made me all tense up & wish I had a fabulous back massager love
Boy, I'm sure glad I know how to give a back massage. From the sounds of it, its a much needed skill!
Another very good post. I liked how Cem skirted around the issue, and only finally caved. It had to be said, so I would hope Jag doesn't try to beat him to within an inch of his life.\
Can't wait for the next post.
P.S. As much as I'm enjoying both of your major fics, I'm really hoping for at least one happy ending of the two tongue . I love relationships that just end brutally just as much as the next person, but a little bit of mutual understanding and a "tender" resolution couldn't hurt wink
