Shawnkyr think about it. The most obvious thing isn't always the best choice that can be made.

Oh boy I have a feeling that this might end their friendship faster then simply finding other way of ending this problem.

WOW...thanks for answering those questions (and so formally too!)! Whooo, didn't know Shanwkyr coudl actually share stuff with anybody. I thought she was going to waste awat in silence. Good choice, though.

MMmmm...o no, Shawnie, whatcha gonna do? And how is sleeping with the Prince of Wales Hottie himself repulsive?

O right, Chiss. *shakes head* bloody stupid race, to throw away beauty like that...

Hahah. I guess I lack the respect you have the for the Chiss. They just seem so alien. Good job holding on to that feeling for me, I'm assuming that means you're staying true to the essence of the Chiss that I only pick up on dimly.

Mmm-mmm-mmm...

While Jag’s attention was diverted, Cem moved closer to her. “What did you say to him?” His hissed words filled Shawnkyr with guilt. “I should never have told you. You promised you would not hurt him!” sad Shawnie, Shawnie, Shawnie…you’ve got yourself into a whole mess of trouble – but what did Cem expect? Of course she wasn’t going to be able to handle it properly – she’s never dealt with this sorta thing before…

“Jag? Our Jag?” Something about that just made me smile and want to cry for Jag at the same time. It’s great that not only is he that endeared to Shawnkyr but that he’s got that same familial relationship with her father. Excellent.

Thevan smiled faintly. “Because it is Jag we speak of,” he conceded. “I can trust him as I would not trust another man.”

“Trust?”

“Not to take advantage of your closeness for his own ends. He has already proven his honor and valor in this. As you said, he endured in silence rather than spoil your friendship.”
I am so glad to see that Thevan is slightly approving of Jag’s means of handling it, and isn’t totally hating on Jag. He needs all the support he can get, even if Thevan doesn’t know the whole story.

“Jag needs me,” she quietly replied. “If this is the only help I can offer him…”

Thevan gasped at the implications of his daughter’s reply. “You cannot mean that! Jag would never allow you to make such a sacrifice!”
shock shock I hadn’t expected that of her. I mean, wow, she’s willing to sacrifice a lot for their friendship, but why do I get the feeling that in sacrificing that, she would sacrifice the friendship as well? [face_question] She needs some lessons in Human Loving 101, because this will only worsen the problem. This is getting more and more twisted as we go along – but I love it!

She recoiled mentally and emotionally from the images the term conjured. But that was what Jag needed from her. There was no going around it. *grimaces* not really liking how she’s thinking about going about it…she has a lot to learn… ahhh, Shawnkyr…

"What about him?" she returned coolly. "I have entered no formal agreement with him, and besides, this will not affect our relationship. Jag is more important to me than Athan - even he knows that and will understand." Awesome. Does this mean she will totally break off the potential marriage with Athan, or that she just anticipates him to accept her “coupling” with Jag as a means to help out a friend and nothing else and then continue on with the marriage? confused I almost pity Athan. He’s just plain unlucky.

Another excellent update. I really can't wait to see how Jag will react and how Shawnkyr will go about this without either becoming emotionally entangled for good, or without his realizing what he's doing. Personally, I hope she falls in love with him and recognizes it, because she clearly has some sort of feelings going on for him. Maybe she just needs someone to knock some sense into her - I'll volunteer *rolls up sleeves and raises fists* ...although I bet Cem would like to be the first in line, lol!

Bravo, bravo! applause

Being an avid reader of A Higher Purpose, I knew I had to check this story out and see what else your brilliant mind has come up with.

The premise of this story is just lovely, and your approach to the characters and the situation they're in is honest. I love how you don't sweep anything under the rug here.

Unlike a lot of people here, I'm not a shipper, and I don't have any preferences for who Jag ends up with. But Shawnkyr never occured to me, though now that you have pointed it out, I like it. Though it might also be because I don't mind human/alien pairings, and I also love the Aayla/Kit romance. And to me, the Chiss really aren't that alien. They just look different, but many of their mannerisms and habits make them compatible with human life. And your explanation in your notes allowed me to see why such a pairing might or might not work.

Like everyone else, I wonder how you can conclude this happily - either way seems filled with heartbreak, but you're also good with twisting things around. tongue

I also saw that you'd be bringing in Jaina soon. Ouch.

Wow Inara. This is getting very intense.

I can't believe Shawnkyr. shock

Honey, I'm telling you that is one BAD idea. shame_on_you No couplings with Jag if you don't want it to be permanent.

Hurry up Inara. Bring Jaina in before Jag does something he'll regret.

Awesome update. And I'm not sure how long I can go without finding out how you're going to handle this.

Uh, this story is so realistic it's scary. I swear I've never read a more realistic Star Wars story in my life. And it's because the characters actually are messed up. I love it.

Does anyone here besides me think that Jag isn't the only one with mixed-up feelings here? I mean, I could be wrong, because I am a lot, but I don't think Shawnkyr is as secure in her desire for Jag's "friendship" as she thinks she is. Especially not after finding out that Jag wants her. I think that they probably used to be just very good friends, but that many years of partnership and emotional intimacy has brought Jag to desire and Shawnkyr to dependence. I know that the romantic in me would like to see them together and happy, but this story's too authentic to do that. They're gonna keep messing up their friendship until it's gone, and then they're going to have to deal with the loss of each other as best as they can. And we all know that sex is going to destroy them. The key here is whether Shawnkyr and Jag break off now, or break off later when it hurts ten times as much.

That's my take, at least. And I think Shawnkyr feels more than just friendship for Jag. It's not romantic love per se, but it's pretty damn close.

Thanks for the pm.

It was strange to hear her father speaking so frankly about something the Chiss never discussed.
I can't imagine a daughter discussing this with her father.

Already her heart ached at the imminent loss of the gallant man who had so enthralled her from the start and made her feel whole.
She seems to be feeling a lot more for him than she is willing to admit.

"What about him?" she returned coolly. "I have entered no formal agreement with him, and besides, this will not affect our relationship. Jag is more important to me than Athan - even he knows that and will understand." Hummm, do the Chiss show jealousy?

Surprised at his daughter's rare display of naiveté, he only looked more doubtful. “Do not rush into this, Shawnkyr,” Thevan pleaded with her. “You may only do grievous harm. I say this not only for your sake but for Jag’s as well. He is dear to me, too.” I sense a real mess coming up.

Sorry about this, but I'm still trying to get an understanding of the emotional state of the Chiss. I have read "Red Sky, Blue Flame". I have always thought of them as very practical. If I understand your take on them, loyalty to the Chiss people (would that mean the government?) comes first. Would that mean duty comes first? If so I think I can wrap my mind around that.

Oops! I didn't read down far enough. I guess you answered my "duty" question.
I have made several assumptions on Chiss culture. They are an emotionally reserved culture, committed to their duty and quite adamant about not straying from it

I'm having trouble with the idea that parents wouldn't love their children, or is the emotional distance between Shawnkyr and her mother normal or not? Or perhaps the relationship with her father is abnormal for a Chiss family?

Somewhere someone compared the Chiss emotional state to the Vulcans in Star Trek, perhaps that is what is causing me trouble. The Vulcans were a highly passionate people who kept their emotions under tight control through discipline. Most of the time emotions weren't evident, but occasionally they came through, usually under great duress or illness. The Chiss however do not deny their emotions. Is it just that they don't have the depth of emotion of humans (coldness) or that the emotions are prioritized differently?

Hope you don't mind the questions.

"Bugs!" Han groaned and shook his head. "Why did it have to be bugs?" from TJK
She hands him a can of Raid and says, "I'll watch your back"
That's how to deal with bugs Mr. Denning! grin

I'll post replies later, but I just wanted to answer these questions before I go out:

I imagine they do, but are more subtle about it. If you look carefully at what Athan does and says, you'll see that he's slightly peeved with Jag, but not insecure, because in the end, he's Chiss and Jag is human.

No, Chiss parents do love their children. There is definite affection between Shawnkyr and her parents, and I think somewhere Shawnkyr stated that love for one's family was natural. Shawnkyr's distance with her mother has more to do with her mother's occupation. In an earlier chapter, Shawnkyr and Thevan mention that her mother is a Chiss scientist whose work keeps her at another scientific facility.

Think of the Chiss family unit as a Hapan family, or even as a royal family on Earth. Alliances are made with little sentiment but more for the benefit of one's family. But that doesn't mean they don't care about each other - it's just that they won't delude themselves into believing why they were married in the first place.

The Chiss do have emotions, and I agree, they are like Vulcans to an extent. And while they don't deny them, they are careful in keeping them separate from their duties. For me, at least, when I read the scene where Jag wanted to remain on Borleias though he was shirking his official duty, and Shawnkyr could not wrap her mind around it was an indication that she did not understand his motivations, that feelings could inspire someone to act on behalf of something besides the Ascendancy.

Not at all! Writing the Chiss is hard because there is so little known about their culture, and half the time I think I pull stuff out of thin air, but I wanted to make it as plausible as possible. I never liked it when some writers villify the Chiss, which seems the easy way out. At least as Zahn wrote them, they are good people - but set in their own ways, and they won't accept anything else. It's their way or the highway, so to speak.

Okay, finally got around to finishing page two. Wow, he actually touched her! You write the angst between the two quite well. I want them to get together but somehow I know that won't be possible. (Oh, and reading this while reading your other story confused me when I switched back. Hehe.)

Read more: Cem speaks pretty eloquently for a guy in the army. wink And he's almost too subtle for a guy. wink (Most guys I know aren't.)

Wow. So Shawnkyr is going to sleep with him? That's at least what I read of it. And you've created a very detailed world of Csilla. I think you've thought through worlds and characters well enough that you won't write a Mary Sue. wink Don't worry about that dear. You've developed everything far better than I ever have before I write my own stuff.
