As a girl, I'd never EVER ask my dad anything like that, so don't worry, I'm sure if you ever have a girl she'll feel as uncomfortable about talking about sex with you as I do with my dad. wink (I was amused by your comment.)

You all knew it had to happen sooner or later...Pregnant Padme has wandered over to pollute another one of Inara's threads!!!!!

First off:

Inara
You continue to amaze me. I'm beginning to think I would read your version of the yellow pages. I'm in love with this story and after finishing the last chapter last night, I was actually was relieved to have the authors notes because I just wasn't ready to be done (Hubby rolled over and, having read over my shoulder for a minute, asked who Shawn kerrrr was and then was sorry he asked. He thinks I'm nuts!).

My heart went out to Shawnkyr because in her controlled way she loves Jag so much and is clearly willing to do anything to fix what she fears may be severe damage...but man...the idea she's toying with could be such a bad idea.

I adored the conversation between Shawnkyr and Thevan. It really illustrated how close and comfortable a parent child relationship can be even if the outward appearences are different from what we would expect. Just because they don't fall all over them selves emotionally like some humans *coughsoloscough* doesn't mean that their depth of emotion is any less or that they can't talk about pressing matters.

I'm so looking forward to the next post...and just think...I'll be able to reply to that one line by line!

WooHoo!

If you look carefully at what Athan does and says, you'll see that he's slightly peeved with Jag, but not insecure, because in the end, he's Chiss and Jag is human.

I thought that is what I saw, thank you for confirming it.

No, Chiss parents do love their children. There is definite affection between Shawnkyr and her parents, and I think somewhere Shawnkyr stated that love for one's family was natural. Shawnkyr's distance with her mother has more to do with her mother's occupation. In an earlier chapter, Shawnkyr and Thevan mention that her mother is a Chiss scientist whose work keeps her at another scientific facility.

Think of the Chiss family unit as a Hapan family, or even as a royal family on Earth. Alliances are made with little sentiment but more for the benefit of one's family. But that doesn't mean they don't care about each other - it's just that they won't delude themselves into believing why they were married in the first place.

The reference to royal families on Earth helped with understanding the Chiss family. Sometimes the American way of thinking can get in the way of understanding these type of relationships.

Writing the Chiss is hard because there is so little known about their culture, and half the time I think I pull stuff out of thin air, but I wanted to make it as plausible as possible. I never liked it when some writers villify the Chiss, which seems the easy way out. At least as Zahn wrote them, they are good people - but set in their own ways, and they won't accept anything else.

Thank you for answering my questions. In writing about the Chiss you have to "pull stuff out of thin air" because there is nowhere else to pull from! wink

It's their way or the highway, so to speak.

Good reminder! laugh Me thinks that you are a deep thinker for one so young. Seems like that might go with being a researcher. Your stories have a lot of depth to them and I am really enjoying them. Thank you very much! hugs

I am looking forward to the next post. happy

Great story! applause

I always liked Shawnkyr as a character, and I think you got her absolutely right!

You know, I think you're right with your Chiss characterization: cold on the outside, but if they really trust someone, they are just as emotional as Humans, they just wouldn't show it in public.
Just with logical thinking and no emotion at all, they wouldn't be able to appreciate art like they do - of course, Thrawn used it for tactical means, but I always thought that even for a Chiss, this would be quite unusual.

And why would they continue to live on Csilla, a planet that suddenly became so inhospitable? They could have it much easier from a solely practical point of view if they just moved to another planet in their territory - so do we see a sign of sentimentality there?

Part 1...

Uriden: I really, REALLY hope that if - godforbid - I ever have a daughter, that she never asks me a question like that.

Yes, but you're human. tongue I think the Chiss would be more pragmatic about these matters.

The Chiss do have feelings and affections for each other, it's just hidden under layers of formality and adherence to duty.

Yes, they do. They just don't let their feelings run them.

I really liked how awkard everything felt in the turbolift - a nice touch.

As if I'd ever make anything easy for the characters. shock

Chimpo_the_Sith: The most obvious thing isn't always the best choice that can be made.

Too bad the best lessons are always learned too late.

JediTristan: WOW...thanks for answering those questions (and so formally too!)!

You know how much I love questions. happy

didn't know Shanwkyr coudl actually share stuff with anybody. I thought she was going to waste awat in silence.

Even she needs someone to turn to.

And how is sleeping with the Prince of Wales Hottie himself repulsive?

laugh

I guess I lack the respect you have the for the Chiss. They just seem so alien.

Well, they are alien. happy

jags_gurl: Shawnie, Shawnie, Shawnie…you’ve got yourself into a whole mess of trouble – but what did Cem expect? Of course she wasn’t going to be able to handle it properly – she’s never dealt with this sorta thing before…

Time for a crash course in Fel 101...

I am so glad to see that Thevan is slightly approving of Jag’s means of handling it, and isn’t totally hating on Jag. He needs all the support he can get, even if Thevan doesn’t know the whole story.

I honestly think that there are Chiss fond of Jag. Judging from Formbi's words in TJK, I think that some Chiss would feel some measure of affection for the Fels, especially since they tend to make lasting impressions. happy

Does this mean she will totally break off the potential marriage with Athan, or that she just anticipates him to accept her “coupling” with Jag as a means to help out a friend and nothing else and then continue on with the marriage? confused I almost pity Athan. He’s just plain unlucky.

shame_on_you As if I'd spoil the plot....

Maybe she just needs someone to knock some sense into her - I'll volunteer *rolls up sleeves and raises fists* ...although I bet Cem would like to be the first in line, lol!

I think he would. Cem is like all good siblings - he's very protective of his family, even of the ones that don't think they need his protection, like Jag.

ImperialSpy: I love how you don't sweep anything under the rug here.

Reading my fics can be a painful experience, but a good one, I hope!

And to me, the Chiss really aren't that alien. They just look different, but many of their mannerisms and habits make them compatible with human life. And your explanation in your notes allowed me to see why such a pairing might or might not work.

happy I'm glad someone else agrees with me on that.

I also saw that you'd be bringing in Jaina soon. Ouch.

Ouch indeed. sad

Lola64: I can't believe Shawnkyr.

Neither can her father...or Shawnkyr herself. sad

No couplings with Jag if you don't want it to be permanent.

Poor Shawnie. She just doesn't understand that you can't always separate physical emotions from emotional ones.

Bring Jaina in before Jag does something he'll regret...And I'm not sure how long I can go without finding out how you're going to handle this.

But will Jaina make the situation any better? thinking And don't worry, this fic only has five or so more installments. This is definitely not an epic by any means, and as there is only one conflict (as opposed to ten), it'll get resolved a lot faster.

As everyone here has probably surmised, I'm a big fan of canon, whether I personally like where it's going or not. So the Jaina in this fic will be the Jaina we've been seeing in the Dark Nest books...I wrestled with this for a long time, but I couldn't bring myself to change her from the way Denning portrayed her. So we'll see exactly what happens. shock

FelsGoddess:
It most likely will. Let's hope she has good damage control skills.

On the part 2....

WynssaStarflare: Shawnkyr is really willing to go far to keep Jag as a friend.

Shawnkyr and Jag are very close, and since Shawnie doesn't understand exactly what's she's offering...

Master_Jaina1011: Welcome! hugs I love new readers!! Yes, Jag and Shawnkyr really do have a lot in common.

TheCrazyRodian: Uh, this story is so realistic it's scary. I swear I've never read a more realistic Star Wars story in my life. And it's because the characters actually are messed up.

laugh That has to be one of the best assessments of this fic I've see so far. Yes, I do like keeping things realistic. I know that this is supposed to be fan fiction, and it's here to provide us escapism, but I love getting into the minds of characters so much, and once I get inside, what I find is not pretty.

Does anyone here besides me think that Jag isn't the only one with mixed-up feelings here? I mean, I could be wrong, because I am a lot, but I don't think Shawnkyr is as secure in her desire for Jag's "friendship" as she thinks she is.

applause Good observation! It's very true. She used to be secure in her relationship with him, but now Jag is confusing her and making her doubt her feelings. sad

The key here is whether Shawnkyr and Jag break off now, or break off later when it hurts ten times as much.

These are the kind of decisions that people wish they could make in retrospect. sad

And I think Shawnkyr feels more than just friendship for Jag. It's not romantic love per se, but it's pretty damn close.

Can the nature of love change a person over time? Can the nature of love itself change over time? thinking

Jaya Solo: Wow, he actually touched her! You write the angst between the two quite well. I want them to get together but somehow I know that won't be possible.

Who knows? Maybe there is some hope. happy

So Shawnkyr is going to sleep with him?

We'll find out soon...

And you've created a very detailed world of Csilla. I think you've thought through worlds and characters well enough that you won't write a Mary Sue.

Thank you! It's always been my secret fear, to have a Mary Sue.

pregnantpadme: I'm beginning to think I would read your version of the yellow pages.

Don't give me plot bunnies, Feefi!!

Hubby rolled over and, having read over my shoulder for a minute, asked who Shawn kerrrr was and then was sorry he asked. He thinks I'm nuts!.

We're the nutty pair. happy

My heart went out to Shawnkyr because in her controlled way she loves Jag so much and is clearly willing to do anything to fix what she fears may be severe damage...but man...the idea she's toying with could be such a bad idea.

It just goes to show how far someone will go in the name of love...and to preserve an ideal. Shawnkyr desperately wants things to be back to normal, and in her Chiss mind, she thinks it can be achieved this way.

Thank you! Chiss parents do love their children, they're just more reserved in how they show it. And I'm really fond of Thevan. He's a good day, even though he's not a scoundrel. :0

just think...I'll be able to reply to that one line by line!

That makes me want to post early, just so I can get a review from you. hugs

Rebel-at-Heart: I love it when people ask me questions, because I love responding, and then I love it even more when people respond back. I'm so addicted... chicken

Sometimes the American way of thinking can get in the way of understanding these type of relationships.

It's hard to imagine such a fundamentally different culture. Speaking for myself, I tend to view things by how I was raised - and then I realize that it's not always a good idea because identifying with a character's background can also be a hindrance. It's why I'm so thrilled when people read this story. The culture and the pairing in here are unknown to nearly all of us, and it's great when people are open-minded enough to try something new.

Me thinks that you are a deep thinker for one so young. Seems like that might go with being a researcher. Your stories have a lot of depth to them and I am really enjoying them.

Thank you! Yeah, I think I tend to approach my writing scientifically at times, and I always feel the need to have detailed background before I write anything. It sometimes gets to the point where the background info is larger than the story itself. mischief

Csillan_girl: Another new reader! Welcome!!

I always liked Shawnkyr as a character, and I think you got her absolutely right!

Thank you! Characterization is always a worry for me, and I'm glad that you approve of Shawnkyr. It makes me a little more relieved.

I really like your thoughts here. The Chiss appreciate art and beauty, and if they had no emotions, then they would not be able to understand it as well. Their emotions are there, but they access them differently, and they are careful to keep their feelings in check.

And why would they continue to live on Csilla, a planet that suddenly became so inhospitable? They could have it much easier from a solely practical point of view if they just moved to another planet in their territory - so do we see a sign of sentimentality there?

Sentimentality and sheer stubbornness. In this matter, they are not practical. Instead of moving, they dug their heels into Csilla and refused to budge.

Those Chiss... rolling_eyes

Chapter 11

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What are favors between friends?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Cselarn

Over breakfast in the mess hall, Athan scanned over his notes on his datapad. His temporary assignment on the Cselarn included sorting through all the information that Jag’s scouts brought in on a daily basis, as well as the data received by the Chiss outposts long the buffer zone.

It was tedious work, and generally, Athan disliked it in favor of more engaging assignments, but in the week following the Killik ambush, the situation surrounding Shawnkyr had grown tenser, and he had begun looking forward to boredom with a measure of relief.

He did not know what, if anything, had happened between the two friends, but he was an intel officer skilled at observing people. And more often than not, his eyes had been trained on Jag and Shawnkyr.

It was easy to see how protective Jag was of his friend and how much he cared for her. But what Athan could not ascertain was how far Jag’s emotions went and how far he would go to sate them. In most circumstances, he would not even care. Jag meant little to him beyond his connection to Shawnkyr, and he was a human, which automatically excluded him as competition for her hand.

But what concerned Athan was not Jag’s affection for Shawnkyr but his reasons for it. Jag could gain nothing by pursuing her since the Fels were not involved in the complex balance of Chiss families. Nor were they culturally compatible, and not just from Shawnkyr’s side either. Jag was human, after all, and he had human needs that a Chiss would never be able to meet.

Athan had studied human culture, and though he was no expert on them, they had certain strange behavioral habits. One such habit was their dependence on humor. This was not to say that the Chiss did not appreciate humor because they did, but there was a time and a place for it. Yet humans often felt inclined to interject humor when in a tense or awkward situation, something a Chiss would find inappropriate.

Another aspect of human culture which baffled him was their constant need for physical contact. They cuddled like animals, sat in close proximity to one another unnecessarily, and felt the need to kiss even when they were not being intimate. And what confused Athan most of all was their propensity in holding the hands of their loved ones, which made no sense to him. To the Chiss, if a person were not physically impaired, then she had no need to be led like an animal on a lease. It was a demeaning act for a Chiss, yet it had great emotional meaning for a human.

These habits did not lessen humans in Chiss eyes, but it was these types of things that made them different from one other. Even the Fels, who were admirable people whose behavior was without fault, kept their professional life among the Chiss separate from their personal life.

And from what Athan had heard of Jag’s actions during the war, the young man had welcomed being surrounded by humans, had enjoyed being free of the constraints of Chiss standards, and had found emotional fulfillment with one Jaina Solo.

Shawnkyr would never allow Jag to hold her hand.

Which made her closeness to Jag all the more puzzling. What did they get out of their friendship? What could either of them provide to one another besides comradeship? And it was clear to Athan that their relationship went deeper than mere comradeship.

He wondered how he would feel, once married to Shawnkyr, about the exclusivity of her relationship with Jag. Not jealous, since he had nothing to be jealous of…or did he?

Athan looked up to behold Shawnkyr’s approach. Her fair face was haggard, and her eyes seemed distressed. “May I join you?” she asked politely.

“Please do,” he said, gesturing to the seat across from him.

She set her tray down in front of her. “Have you heard the news?”

Athan flicked a crumb from the sleeve of his uniform jacket. “What news?”

“I ran into Carnen in the turbolift, and he informed me that Jag received a transmission from Admiral Rekan.”

“He always receives those,” he said pointedly.

Her eyes brightened in amusement. “Well, this time it had nothing to do with chastisement. The admiral believes that our duty tour has been extended for too long, and in two weeks, and he has granted all of us a one month shore leave. During that time, the Second Fleet will replace us here.”

Athan immediately grew cheered. “It will be pleasant to leave the Killiks behind.”

“Oh yes. And eat more palatable food.” Though her words were humorous, Athan sensed a strain in her voice, and her slight smile seemed forced. Whatever was bothering her was great enough that not even the prospect of going home lifted her spirits.

“Do you have something planned this evening?” he asked suddenly. “Or would you like to indulge me in a game of chess?”

Shawnkyr shook her head. “Not tonight.” She paused, and then, “I have fallen behind in my duties, and Jag will be helping me catch up.”

“Oh.” He took a sip of water in an effort to hide his disappointment and puzzlement. He had hardly spent any time at all with Shawnkyr this past week. “I would have helped you if you had asked. Or do you prefer his company so much more than mine?”

“No, how could you think such a thing?” She sounded genuinely distressed at his interpretation.

His voice was quiet. “It is very easy to think such a thing.”

Shawnkyr’s eyes were apologetic. “I did not think you would wish to. And over the years, Jag and I have developed a comfortable working relationship. We just fell into an old habit.”

Athan had no choice but to let it go, though there was something lacking despite the plausibility of her explanation. “Another time, then.”

Was it his imagination, or was that guilt that had flashed in Shawnkyr’s eyes?

An uncomfortable thought occurred to him. Was she lying to him? And if she were, why would she need to? What was she doing tonight that would cause her to speak a falsehood?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jag looked out the view port in the forward observation deck. It was the end of a duty cycle, and he had come here straight from his shift on the bridge. He lifted his long legs onto one of the couches that lined the windows, bending one so that he could rest his arms on his knee and curl the other limb underneath.
He could hear the faint sounds coming from the bridge. Although Cem had asked him to join his squadron for dinner, at the last minute Jag had chosen to eschew their company, for he could summon neither the heart nor the mood to indulge in anything merry. Instead, he had come to this quiet spot in hopes of solitude and a chance to sort out his thoughts and feelings.
Sadness infused him as he realized that after this duty tour, he might never be seated here again. His had not been rash words when he had declared that he would seek re-assignment elsewhere. It was the only thing he could do to ease his heartache, and it was unfair to have Shawnkyr transferred since it was not her fault. He hoped that by being far from the source of his desire, he would find some sort of peace. And failing that, at least there would be no constant reminders of his last conversation with Shawnkyr and the resulting debacle. He sighed heavily.
“How are you, Jag?”
He started and turned at the sound of the familiar voice. Trust a Chiss to sneak up on you without really trying, he thought a little tartly.
“I am well, Shawnkyr,” he managed to reply.
He swallowed hard at the sight of his friend and quickly turned his attention back to the stars. It had been three days since they had so much as seen each other, much less exchanged a word, and he had been ill-prepared to see her once more.
In the starlight that filtered in the darkened room, her blue-black hair gleamed, and her eyes pierced the darkness. Her hair was bound in its customary way, and she was still in her uniform. She looked every inch the warrior yet the fairness of her countenance juxtaposed against the darkness of her uniform lent her an almost otherworldly air. In all honesty, she looked no different than she had before, but now he was viewing her with different eyes, and everything beautiful about her was magnified a hundred-fold.
Jag thought he had never seen a lovelier creature, and he silently cursed the trick that fate had played on him by guiding him here and making it possible for them to cross paths. I should have gone to my room.
“You did not join us,” Shawnkyr said. “Cem asked about you.”
“I was not in the mood for company,” Jag answered.
Shawnkyr sat down on one end of the bench and looked at him. Her steady gaze discomforted Jag. He was at a loss as to where to cast his eyes without letting them alight on the figure opposite him.
He did not notice that she studied him as well. Shawnkyr had taken her father’s counsel to heart. She had given much thought to the matter and had come to only one conclusion. If she could come to desire or, at the very least, tolerate a coupling with her friend as her father had so bluntly put it...
The irony was that while Jag had unwillingly reacted to her physical appearance, she had to force herself to admire his. With singular determination, Shawnkyr bent her thoughts to appreciating her friend’s good looks, unhindered by the restraints of their friendship; tried to see Jag from the point of view of his numerous admirers and past lovers. She knew Jag was coveted by many humans, and that those he had favored never forgot the bliss experienced in his arms, which was further evidence of his inimitable allure.
They were a study in contrasts, Jag and herself.
His hair was browner than black, and his thickly lashed eyes were as blue as the Csillan sky. He was tall and lean though not as deceptively slim as Chiss were wont; it was evident in his broader shoulders, his less slender limbs. Yet he always moved with the fluid assurance of her people.
Jag always gave an impression of elegance whether arrayed in formal garb or dressed in his uniform as he was tonight.
There is as much beauty in him, Shawnkyr mused. Would it be so difficult to submit to him? Surely, with one so fair and noble, intimacy would not be too strange or unpleasant. He was also remarkably skillful besides. She knew all too well of her friend’s reputation on yet another battlefield where he wielded weapons of a different kind and with equal ability as he did those of a more martial design.
Shawnkyr set aside such considerations. In the end, it did not matter. She had to make the attempt come what may. But she needed courage to do it, and she hoped to find it in Jag’s answers to her questions.
“If you were to have what you want, do you think your desire would pass?” she asked as she had earlier asked her father.
Jag, startled, stared at her “I have not thought of it,” he slowly replied. He let out his breath. “This madness has probably grown because I cannot quench it. If I did, then yes, perhaps it would pass. But I cannot say for certain.” He averted his eyes once more.
“Why do you ask?”
Shawnkyr sensed his apprehension. In the way of the Chiss, she answered with another question. “Why me?” she queried. “What turned you to me?”
The query drew back Jag’s attention. He gazed at Shawnkyr for a while before answering. “It was at that restaurant on Csalpar. You hair had gotten lose, and you tucked a strand behind your ear.” Jag’s smile was tinged with both affection and sadness. “And I began to see you beyond the boundaries of friendship.”
“You are the closest thing to perfection that I have ever known,” he softly stated.
For a few seconds, Shawnkyr found herself at a loss for words. Jag had spoken in Cheunh-va, the melodic Chiss language, a language of lore chiefly preserved in books, a tongue no longer uttered in public as a rule. Its use imparted great reverence and deep affection for the recipient. It added greater depth and meaning to the praise Jag bestowed upon her. “I did not know you regarded me thus,” she finally said.
“I did not realize it either,” Jag replied. “I thought I was merely enamored of your beauty. And through the years, I have come to know you well, and what I know I find admirable and worth loving and nurturing. I never meant to want more than that.”
“Why did things change?”
“Athan happened.”
Shawnkyr’ eyes widened slightly. “What did Athan have to do with your feelings?”
“When you told me that you were to marry him, I saw you in another light. I realized that I was jealous. You cannot imagine how frightened I was by the feeling. I should not have felt that way.” Jag looked away, his own cheeks coloring. “I suddenly wondered what it would be like to be intimate with you, to know you as no other man has.”
He glanced back and took note of her expression of incredulity. “Did I not call it madness?” he said softly. His next words dripped with irony. “Amusing, is it not, that I having so extolled the delights of human women should now obsess over a Chiss instead, and she my own best friend at that?”
He looked at Shawnkyr; saw how disturbed she was by his frank narrative. He drew a weary breath and turned his eyes once more to the shadowed woods. “I am sorry to have disturbed you so, Aelin Mel. But you need worry no longer about this lunacy of mine. I will depart after this duty tour and trouble you no more.”
“That I cannot allow,” Shawnkyr quietly replied. “I told you that I would not lose you. I was not jesting.”
“Shawnkyr –”
“I will give you what you desire, Jag.”
Jag turned his head with a jerk and stared at her in astonishment. “What?” he gasped. “Are you insane?” When Shawnkyr simply shook her head, he paled. “I do not wish for you to make this sacrifice.”
“You make it sound as if it would be a hardship for me.”
“It is a hardship if it is not your desire.”
“Then it is your responsibility to ensure that I do not find it a hardship,” she retorted. “Why should I not experience pleasure in your arms? Skillful ones at that from what I have heard of your exploits.”
Her words left Jag speechless. It took him several seconds to form a response. “Why would you do this?” he asked. “Pity? I will not accept pity from you.”
“Nor would I give it. I would never insult you like that.” Shawnkyr leaned forward and cupped Jag’s chin with her hand. “I do this because you are dear to me, and I refuse to lose you.”
She rose to her feet but retained her gaze on him. “Think about it,” she said, her voice soft and gentle. “When you have made your decision, come to me. I will be in my quarters.”
She silently walked away, leaving Jag to stare at her retreating figure. He did not know what to think or do. And he was seriously torn between a need to weep and the urge to go into hysterics. He realized his hands were shaking visibly, and he quickly clenched them. As lucidity returned, he considered the consequences of consummating his desire.
She offers it now. But when it comes to the actual act, she will not be able to do it. Where will that leave me? Caught between fulfillment and frustration. Can I endure that?
He bent his head and covered his face with his hands. What should I do?
Author Notes:
- I have a sort of survey question for all my faithful readers. How do you guys feel about a human/alien pairing as it is portrayed in his story? (This has nothing to do with the outcome of this fic as I’ve already decided how it will end), but I was reading over old reviews, and I noticed that some people found the idea of Jag and Shawnkyr to be squicky, and I’m curious to know why. Is it because Shawnkyr is an alien, because she’s emotionally distant, poorly written, or because she’s not Jaina? tongue
- And no, I won’t tell who Jag ends up with. whistling
- And yes, this story is canon. shock
During a conversation I had with PregnantPadme last night, and due to the late hour of this post, I now feel compelled to post the following silliness.
How would Jag and Athan react if Shawnkyr fell to the dark side? thinking
Jag:Ailen Mel...you breakith my heart.”
Athan: “Shawn'kyr'nuruodo, thoust will breakith the organ in my body that controlith the flow of vital fluids.”
And the image that inspired that conversation:
I love that image.
Sure, sure, blame the crazy women.
You know we keep those parts of your brain for you out of the goodness of our HEARTS.
well now, since you posted so damn late (MY FAULT!), I will post with thee.
What I liked best about this post was, of course, how organic everyone was. Jagged was ansgty, human, and self-sacrificng, Athan was his bad alien self, and poor Shawnie is very courageous. I never doubted them, though, and that's extremely important (and underrated. Doubt in a character takes time, after all, but it's kind of obvious in the beginning when something is, oh GASP *cardboard*).
I also liked the tension. Is Athan gonna find out? What the hell is he gonna do when he does find out? Will Jag let Shawnie *ahem* do what he wants? DUN DUN DUNNNN! I really like it though. Bring on the angst, as I've said before.
Yay for you, and I"M SORRY TO KEEP YOU UP SO FREAKING LATE!!! {face_blush]
As for your question: If the pairing makes some form of peace between the two, enlightens things (hahah s** enlightening things) then I'm all for it.
So she invited him... Well we shall see what will happen next...
How do you guys feel about a human/alien pairing as it is portrayed in his story? (This has nothing to do with the outcome of this fic as I’ve already decided how it will end), but I was reading over old reviews, and I noticed that some people found the idea of Jag and Shawnkyr to be squicky, and I’m curious to know why. Is it because Shawnkyr is an alien, because she’s emotionally distant, poorly written, or because she’s not Jaina?
She's not Jaina tongue But seriously I'm not sure if human/alien pairings are in my taste. I think that pairings from the same race are more natural. I have no problem with white people paired with black or otherway around. I think that humans should end with humans and Chiss should end with Chiss ( and the same thing goes for other races) Of course that means only romantic relationships not frienship.
EDIT: Ok thinking about it, human/Chiss relationship wouldn't be that different so maybe it shouldn't cause any bad feelings toward it.
Oooh, yesss, make it happen!
Great post, Inara!
I'm sure Shawnkyr will see that it's not so bad, on the contrary!! grin Pretty courageous for a Chiss to dare doing such a thing, though - perhaps she'll change some of her people's minds? I bet a Human/Chiss couple would be the sensation of the year on Csilla!
I like the idea of Human/Chiss couples very much!
And Athan - who is Athan, anyway? tongue She'll forget him very quickly once Jag is hers!! grin
(btw, in case you might wonder, it's me, Csillan_girl in sock disguise!! I was too lazy to log off with Silya and in again with CG)
Wow, poor Jag.
Someone ought to tell Shawnkyr that hibitydibity with a friend half the time ends a friendship anyway. So there's no need to do it just to keep the friendship. I'm just saying.
As far as interspecies relationships, in general I don't mind. I just can't see Shawnkyr and Jag. I don't know. She's just too opposite of what we love about Jag.
Yes here Shawnkyr seems less Chiss than usual but she could never be what Jag needs, someone to bring out his softer side, whether openly or in private. She makes him more animalistic (is that a word?)
I'm very interested to see what comes to pass between them. I personally think Athen's the better choice for Shawnkyr and whether Jag ends up with Jaina or not, he should not allow Shawnkyr to satisfy him hoping to snap him out of this fascination with her.
Great job on the writing as always and I'll be waiting for the next post.
