Title: The Making of a Rebel
Author: TKeira_Lea
Timeframe: The Enemy Lines Duology
Characters: Jagged Fel, Jaina Solo, Kyp Durron
Genre: Missing scenes
Keywords: minor AU
Notes: Follows All Angles in my Force Evolution Series. Please check my bio for appropriate links.
Summary: This collection of vignettes reflect Jag’s underutilized POV during the Borleias showdown.

Disclaimer: Lucasfilm owns all the rights to Star Wars. I don’t. No infringement is intended or profit to be made by me.

To Force Evolution Series fans, welcome back! To new readers, welcome!

This collection of vignettes takes place during The Enemy Line Duology by Aaron Allston. They follow Dreams of the Future, which takes place during DarkTide:Ruin, and All Angles, which takes place in Dark Journey. These vignette collections parallel the storyline of the EU novels, but present a different angle.

Please note that this is a slight AU in that Jag's siblings vary from canon.

I will be updating this series on alternating Fridays. I hope you enjoy it as much as I am having writing it.

THE MAKING OF A REBEL

Prologue

Maybe this wasn’t a good idea after all.

Jagged Fel was beginning to think years of good judgment had flown out the viewport and left him a blundering fool. He hadn’t truly considered the implications of this decision. Now doubt riddled every breath he took. His insides were tied in knots. His head pounded like a thousand glaciers were calving inside.

Only one part of him felt quiet and sure. His heart.

There’s a reason you haven’t told Shawnkyr yet. She will tell you it’s career suicide to counter a directive, and she’ll be right.

His eyes shot quickly to the open portal leading out of the grandiose reception area where he was seated. That portal was a long way off. Worse, it was past a string of Hapans wanting the same thing, an audience with the new Queen Mother. As he pondered his options, he felt every set of eyes in the room follow his gaze.

Go! they seemed to say in unison. The Hapans had been uniformly if silently outraged when Jag had been given preferential treatment and brought to the head of line. If he wanted to run, they apparently were all for it.

Shawnkyr may have forgiven you for the fight yesterday, but that doesn’t mean she’ll understand this.

Jag stood abruptly, focused solely on the exit.

His heart cried out, Jaina! You promised, and for a moment he was rooted again.

Go on! the room’s inhabitants said with nothing more than their stares. Don’t make your best friend mad.

Jag ran a palm down his face, trying in vain to wipe away the flush of indecision. Who are you deceiving? It’s not Shawnkyr you’re worried about. It’s –

“Colonel Fel.” A man dressed in the customary uniform of the Royal Hapan Guard emerged from the Queen Mother’s chambers. “She will see you now.”

Casting a last glance across the salon, Jag realized his fate was sealed. He had used his service to the Queen Mother as a banked favor to get to this audience. Now he had passed the point of no return. Snapping his heels together, he tipped his head to the others in the room, then to the guard to indicate he was ready to follow. With a rigid stride and self-confident carriage he marched into the chambers.

The guard strode across the expansive floor and snapped to attention before Tenel Ka, who was seated at a throne in the room’s center. “Colonel Jagged Fel to see Your Majesty.”

The young Queen Mother dipped her head and waved off the guard. She waited silently until they could no longer hear the clapping of booted heels that marked the guard’s retreat.

“Jag,” she said with a smile. “This is most unexpected.”

He bowed politely. “You guessed I would be tailing a certain Hapan freighter Coreward?”

“This is fact,” she said, sitting regally upon her throne.

“My brains got the better of my instincts, I’m afraid.”

“You’re not going?” Tenel Ka sounded more disappointed than surprised.

Jag hesitated. This could be his Bachan back door, his out. Sure, Tenel Ka would be disappointed; Jaina more so. Once he returned to Chiss space, time and distance would soften that emotion until he was just a faint memory among many in a pain-filled war. The trouble was that his heart would never forget, could never forget a chance lost.

“I am,” he answered resolutely. “I will.”

Her gray eyes questioned why he was still here.

Stepping forward, Jag started to explain. “It is… complicated. My orders were to observe the war and report back to my commanding officer on the enemy’s advances.”

“It would seem, then, that moving Coreward, toward the heart of the battle, would be a logical progression.”

“Logical to a point, but there are extenuating circumstances.” Jag turned away and gazed out the wide window that spanned the throne room. The sun was just rising over Hapes, the day barely started.

“You’re afraid of getting involved.” Tenel Ka’s voice swept closer, but there were no sounds of footfalls to accompany it.

Meanings within meanings. Wisdom worthy of a queen. Jag managed a small smile. “I do not fear getting involved. To fight for something is the noblest endeavor anyone can pursue.”

She was standing next to him by the time she remarked, “If not the fight, what troubles you?” She paused. “Ah.”

“Ah?” Jag echoed, looking to his formidable friend.

“You are afraid of disappointing someone.”

He could only turn his green eyes back to the rising sun and wonder if he would…disappoint someone. Shawnkyr, maybe. But she would come around in time. His mother, most definitely. But she would understand better than most because this was a matter of the heart. His father…There was only one way to find out.

Jag met Tenel Ka’s passive gaze. “I need to ask a favor.”

“Of course. Hapes owes you a great debt.”

“I know it is a lot to ask, but I need to make a long range hyperspace comm.” He hesitated. With resources dwindling as a result of the war, direct long range communication was reserved for government matters and little else. The technology itself was so valuable and the ability so prized that few could afford the luxury.

“To where?”

Jag swallowed. “I can’t say.”

Tenel Ka merely blinked.

“I see I’ve asked too much.”

“No,” she placed a hand on his upper arm. “You haven’t. May I at least ask to whom?”

He nodded. “My father.”

“Ah. To inform him of your decision to stay.” She turned, beckoning Jag to follow. “Odd. I would have guessed your commanding officer. Telling him would be intimidating to say the least.”

When Jag didn’t follow, she paused to look back.

“My commanding officer is my father,” he admitted.

With the truth told, Tenel Ka arched her red-hued eyebrow momentarily, then continued her journey to the far side of the room. She waved her hand over a particular spot and the wall began to peel back, revealing a state of the art communication station. A strange sense of relief combined with a burgeoning sense of impending doom as Jag crossed to stand by her side. By the time he arrived, the equipment was whirring to life. Tenel Ka tapped a code into the keyboard.

“Enter your coordinates and communications variables here. Then push the green transmit button. When you are finished, type Iego-Lexu-Ossus-Victory-Endor-Jabiim and ‘enter’. After that, your information will be permanently swiped.”

Jag dipped his head. “Thank you…for everything.”

A wry grin teased Tenel Ka’s lips. “You may not thank me later.”

He waited, perplexed.

“Once you leave here, make your departure with all due haste. In asking for privacy from the guards, I’ve indicated you as a prime candidate for my consort. My rival suitors waiting outside will be eager to eliminate the competition.”

Jag blinked.

She leaned in, flashing a rare toothy grin. “You should depart before the holomags get wind, and our affair is splashed on every cover.”

Of course she was joking, but Jag was still shocked. Tenel Ka had always been so…grim. Despite her apparent good humor at Jag’s expense, a wistful gleam flashed in her smoky eyes. “My old friend, Jacen, would have loved the look on your face. He would have found it funny.”

“I am sorry for –”

Her upheld palmed silenced the apology. “I must go. Please, take all the time you need.”

“Thank you, Your Majesty.”

Tenel Ka smiled graciously. “May the Force be with you, Jagged Fel.” With that, she drifted from the room.

Now alone, Jag knew his doubts and fears would begin to suffocate him anew if he didn’t get on with the task at hand. His hands didn’t hesitate on the coordinates; they were ingrained in his psyche. Nor did he falter on the communications codes. In a matter of seconds the flatscreen indicated a connection was imminent.

Jag’s heart began to flutter; his breath quickened. He couldn’t believe he was about to talk to someone from home –

Static morphed to a raven-haired, green-eyed girl. Jag’s sister wasn’t even paying attention to the screen. “Fel hell, at your service.”

“Briaun Fel, what would our parents say –”

“Jag!” Her eyes flashed wide like oversized emeraudes. “Is that you?”

“What do you think, Bree?”

She blinked several times and cocked her head, measuring him up. “You look kind of scruffy to be my brother.”

“Who’s scruffy?”

“You are,” she exclaimed, pointing at the screen. “You look like one of those unkempt Rebels Father is always ranting about.”

Suddenly, the full import of a comm from the other side of the galaxy struck his sister. “Oh my stars. Mom is going to freak. Mom!”

“Bree.” He wanted a moment with his sister before –

“Mom!”

“Bree.” He needed a moment.

Briaun jumped from her seat and vanished. “Mo-ther!”

“Never mind,” Jag muttered. Sighing, he shut his eyes in an effort to gather his wits.

“Oh my stars…”

Jag didn’t have to open his eyes to see his mother’s expression. He had been gone on long tours before, as had his brothers and sister; he knew every micrometer of her countenance, worried yet overwhelmed with relief. Still, he couldn’t resist taking in her sparkling blue eyes, already tearing, and her perfect holostar smile. “Hello, Mother.”

“It is you,” she breathed.

“Of course it’s him, Mother,” Briaun declared from offscreen. A stern glare from Syal combined with a piercing stare from Jag made her rethink the glib remark. “Uh, I think I’d better go find Rane.”

Syal looked like she couldn’t decide whether to laugh or cry. The happy part won out, and she giggled. “I can’t believe I’m talking to you.” Abruptly her expression dropped. “Is everything all right, Jagged?”

“Everything is fine.” He paused. There were so many things he wanted to say, and even more things he wanted to ask. Every one of them, though, boiled down to a critical element – Jaina. “Better than fine, actually. I’ve met a lot of nice people here.”

“Have you seen Wedge again?”

“Uh…no.” He had forgotten about his uncle. “We haven’t crossed paths since Ithor.”

“Oh.”

“Did you get the packet I passed on to Father?”

His mother nodded. “Yes. The holos and letters. Everything. I can’t believe he named his daughter after me.”

“He did. He told me she is a…what did he say? Oh, a head-turner like you.”

Still smiling, Syal batted away a tear. “He did?”

Jag wanted to reach through the flatscreen and hold her in a tight embrace. “Yes. Maybe when I am able to return home -”

He couldn’t finish once her face registered the truth of his situation.

“Your father said you have been there long enough to gain the needed perspective. Shouldn’t you be heading home?”

He could see the worry on his mother’s face. To most it would have been invisible, but Jag recognized the tight lines at the corners of her mouth. “About that –“

“Your father isn’t here, Jag. Maybe you should contact him directly at the base.”

A wave of relief flooded his emotions, then receded only to be replaced by a drowning sense of guilt. He had wanted to tell his father. “That’s not a good idea. This isn't something I can discuss with the General."

“Can’t or won’t, Jagged Fel?”

“Won’t.”

“You can’t avoid your duties simply by ignoring him.”

He hated when she did that, called things for what they truly were. “I’m not ignoring him, Mom. In fact, I thought I would catch him home. It isn’t a standard work day.”

“Things are getting worse here. Your father has been putting in unbearably long hours since returning to Csilla.” Syal drew up her shoulders defiantly. “We need you.”

“The people here need me.”

“More than the Chiss do? More than your family?”

Jag knew it was fear speaking, but his mother’s words still hurt. He waited, refusing to lash out. “Wedge is my family too. He lost everything in the fall of Coruscant. I don’t even know if his family made it out alive.”

“But he's alive?” she asked, suddenly fearful for more than just her son’s life.

“I know he’s leading a task force on Borleias. That’s where I plan on heading.”

Syal’s eyes shot wide open. “But Borleias is so close to Coruscant. You would be flying into the thick of the battle.”

Jag said nothing. What was there to say? She was wife and mother to career soldiers. She understood the risks of battle better than most.

“I suppose, like your father, there is no way to convince you otherwise,” she said, dropping her gaze. “Maybe it’s for the best you didn’t inform your father directly.”

“I had every intention of telling Father myself.”

“I know you did.” She sighed. “You’re too much like him, you know. Always one to follow his heart.”

That heart felt like it was about to be crushed. “I love you, Mom.”

“I love you too, Son.” Syal placed her palm to the flatscreen. “Be safe. Fly straight. Clear skies.”

“I will. I promise.”

“Can you promise me something else?”

“I’ll try.”

“Will you write me?”

The heat of a blush threatened to redden his cheeks. He had always been remiss at sending letters home. Reports he never missed, but his family often took a backseat to his career ambitions. “I will.”

“And make sure you tell me everything.”

Mother.” Suddenly he was once more that awkward little boy she used to dote upon.

“At the very least tell me about the young woman who has stolen my son’s heart.”

He sucked in a breath. How could she know? “I…I…”

His mother canted her head knowingly.

Curse the stars, he had never been able to get anything past her. “There is someone I met…but we’re just friends.”

“Friends is a good start. Does this friend have a name?”

Jag had been prepared to go toe to toe with his father over the mission. Nothing could have prepared him to face his mother’s inquisition about this. He swallowed, then forced out, “Jaina.”

Syal smiled. “That’s a pretty name. There’s something familiar about it…”

Jag said nothing.

Slowly the truth dawned across his mother’s face. “Oh, Jagged Fel, please tell me she's not Han Solo's daughter.”

It's here! It's here! TMoaR is finally here!

dancing grin dancing grin dancing

Beautiful portryal of Jag's doubts, fears and indecision at the beginning! It was really nice to get to see a little bit more of the friendship between Jag and Tenel Ka that we saw in All Angles. As always, the family dynamics in the conversation with Jag, Briaun and Syal were just perfect!

Nice double entendre. Even nicer that Jag caught it. Nicer still that he responded in kind. grin

Of course she was joking, but Jag was still shocked. Tenel Ka had always been so…grim.

Loved Tenel Ka's joke . . . and laughed out loud at how funny that thought was coming from Jag. laugh

He had wanted to tell his father. “That’s not a good idea. This isn't something I can discuss with the General."

Nice way to slip in the distinction: at home, 'Tir is Father and at the office, he's the General.

“At the very least tell me about the young woman who has stolen my son’s heart.”

He sucked in a breath.
How could she know?

laugh It's called mother's intuition, Jag - and don't ever doubt its power!

Great post, as always! grin

First off, woohoo! It's started! dancing But I'm guessing there's no Jacen/Shawnkyr in any of these vigs, right? cry

Tenel Ka made a joke? No way! tongue But it's good to know she can, even with all the crap she's going through. Jag/Tenel Ka...now there's a 'ship to explore. mischief

“Fel hell, at your service.”

laugh She's such a typical teenaged girl.

“You can’t avoid your duties simply by ignoring him.”

Oooh, mother's intuition.

“And make sure you tell me everything.”

And there it is again. laugh Great start, TKL!

*is feeling all warm and squishy inside about this post*

This is wonderful, TKL! A great continuation of All Angles...which I recently reread. I can't wait to see more of this (and Kyp is the third main character! tongue I am so predictable.)

Anyways...

I loved Tenel Ka in this. I'm usually not such a big fan, but you wrote her so brilliantly, as she should be written. Kudos. And it was also a great look inside Jag's head.

How perfect! That makes me like Tenel Ka so much more--we always knew she had a sense of humor, no matter how well she hides it, but it's so rare you actually get to see it. Great touch.

She blinked several times and cocked her head, measuring him up. “You look kind of scruffy to be my brother.”

“Who’s scruffy?”

“You are,” she exclaimed, pointing at the screen. “You look like one of those unkempt Rebels Father is always ranting about.”
laugh Classic! laugh I can just hear Soontir ranting about those scruffy Rebels! grin

“At the very least tell me about the young woman who has stolen my son’s heart.”

He sucked in a breath. How could she know? “I…I…”
Mothers always know, don't they? happy

Slowly the truth dawned across his mother’s face. “Oh, Jagged Fel, please tell me she's not Han Solo's daughter.” laugh laugh That's hilarious!

I-l-o-v-e-J AW! cry I never would have noticed that if preggers hadn't pointed it out! Wonderful detail!

What an all-around wonderful post (but then, what else did I expect?)! Great beginning!

Is it too soon to ask for more?

[EDIT] Oh, and I almost forgot to say how much I loved this extremely appropriate title!
