would help her, he vowed, but never again let her into his heart.
The convo between Luke and Mara was honest and powerful. I am touched that he stuck with her until the major physical danger was past. Now, that Mara's committed herself to recovery, it'll be hard still, but she'll persevere and not give up. Facing and handling the pain of grief, guilt and all the other tangled emotions is more cleansing than trying to deny and buury them.
So... Luke's caring is buried. 
How can we... bring it out again? How can she win his trust?
They never will have that trusting innocent love again, but can they have a love as strong and fierce and ... necessary as sunlight? 
Woot!!

Whoa, Mara actually said that out loud?
divapilot, you're right about the lost innocence, but the circumstances surrounding that stage of their relationship were anything but ideal. If they can make it over this mountain together, the love they'll have will be much healthier and stronger.

Wow!! That was an incredibly intense chapter. It was beautifully written. I know Luke thinks he will never let Mara into his heart again, but I think if she gets rehabilitated he will change his mind.
I look forward to the next update.

Very heartwrenching. Good thing they had that conversation shortly after Mara woke up, the sooner things are clear, the better.
He reached forward, as if to take her hand that lay on the bedspread, but stopped himself and withdrew to a safe distance. To me, that spoke volumes, of real pain and lost trust. Healing on either side is gonna be tough.
Have you read 'The shadows suit me', btw?

Well, at least Mara has started to come back, however I really wonder if she has the inner strength of will to withstand the addiction. I kinda doubt she does without falling at least once or twice.

Great update, gal! Luke cutting himself off from all emotion makes me wonder how the dynamics between he and Mara will change things overall. Very interesting ride you're setting us up for here... he may think he's cutoff from emotion, but he's still the man we all know and love.

There may be hope for them yet, farther down the road. Mara must recover from more than just her addiction and Luke must trust again.

Poor Mara. All I can say to her is that the wall of trust is very difficult to constuct but easily torn down. This will be a very difficult road to travel. Wonderful post.

Wow! Wow, wow, wow!
What an impossibly difficult tangle of emotions and you handled it magnificiently!
A good friend of mine at work has just gone through rehab and parts of this hit very close to home. Mara was dead-on: a mixture of despair and self-loathing and hopelessness that is a heartwrenching portrayal of an addict.
And Luke was superb! I love how you wrote him - determined to take care of his friend and former lover, but with a wounded detachment that would most certainly be the result of such pain.
Brava, lady! I'm very much looking forward to more!
