Title: If You Get There Before I Do
Author: DantanaSkywalker
Timeframe: waaaaay post-NJO
Characters:
Genre:
Keywords: character death, angst, romance
Summary: A character looks back on his grandparents.
Author Notes: Lyric excerpt is from "Love, Me", recorded by various, original by Collin Raye, I believe. I originally wrote this just to make the bunny go away, but Agent_Jaid convinced me that while not my best work, it wasn't crap, so I posted it.
The most romantic story I've ever heard was one my grandfather told me when I was fairly young, just a teenager. I've told it to my own children many times now, but I never tire of it.
I worshipped my grandparents. They were the most amazing people I've ever met. I always wondered, as I grew up, how those two people had found each other and married. I knew it had something to do with the War, but no one had told me anything in detail. They'd both fought during the War; I'd assumed that's how they'd met. I'd made up crazy stories, to fill the gap, that just got more fantastic as I got older.
The reality, I found out, didn't have the lightsabers and sith Lords and stormtroopers I'd grown up imagining. But I wouldn't change it for anything.
Let's see. A long, long time ago . . .
----------
"Davin?"
The boy stopped, turned. His grandfather, dark hair now completely white, hazel eyes still sharp, his face heavily lined, stood in a doorway they'd just passed, and was looking at him. The small room was a chapel, or some such thing, for those religious beings whose loved ones were being attended in the medical centre to pray to whatever diety they knew.
"Yes, Grandfather?"
"Come here."
Davin Fel stepped closer to his grandfather. "Is something wrong?"
"No, no." The old man shook his head, smiled at the boy. "No, I just wanted to . . . tell you a story. And I want to show you something."
He pulled a folded piece of flimsiplast from his pocket. It was old, frail, and reminded Davin uncomfortably of his grandmother, who was very sick.
"Have I ever told you how I married your grandmother?"
Davin shook his head solemnly.
"Your grandmother . . . was a very, very beautiful woman. Half the galaxy was in love with her, it seemed sometimes. It took me a long time to realise I was in love with her, too."
The old man sighed, smiled wistfully. "I thought I . . . had something with her, but she met a man, and she . . . well, it was kind of confusing. She was going to marry him. He was handsome, talented, had a more impressive background than me. Really, I was a nobody. Their marriage would have been perfect, especially politically.
"He was all wrong for her, but I think I was the only one who really saw it. Except her brother. Her twin. He knew that she and I were meant to be together. And . . . I did some crazy things, trying to convince her not to marry this man.
"But . . . She didn't love him. Turns out she loved me. and . . . well, there were people who didn't want us together. So, while she was publically planning her wedding, we were secretly planning to run away together."
He was quiet for a long moment, then said, "She didn't meet me at the arranged time and place. I was frantic, because we were making our escape on her wedding day, and I was afraid that she'd changed her mind at the last minute and was going to go through with it all.
"Then I found this note."
The old man's gnarled, wrinkled hands unfolded the flimsiplast. Carefully, he handed it to his grandson.
The boy's green eyes skimmed over the page. He absently shoved a lock of brown hair--his mother's brown hair-- out of his face. The words were from an old song he'd heard his grandmother play sometimes.
If you get there before I do
Don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
I don't know how long I'll be
But I'm not gonna let you down
Darlin', wait and see
And between now and then
'Til I see you again
I'll be loving you
Love, me
"She showed up just a few minutes later, and we ran away together. We got married on yhe first planet we came to, spent our first year there together. By then, she was expecting your mother and uncle. No one could pull us apart."
He smiled, and took the note back.
"Why did you run away?" Davin asked. "Weren't you old enough by then to decide for yourselves?"
"We were . . . but her father didn't want us together."
His grandfather turned, then, and trudged down the hallway.
----------
My grandmother, Jaina, passed away just a few hours later. My grandfather was there, holding her hand, as she faded away. Just before she died, my grandfather said to her, "If you get there before I do, don't give up on me. I'll meet you when my chores are through. I don't know how long I'll be. But I'm not gonna let you down. Darling, wait and see. And between now and then, 'til I see you again, I'll be loving you. Love me."
Kyp Durron joined her not long after, just a few weeks. He left me the note. I have it in a frame on the wall, where I can see it, and remember.

That was sweet. I think I liked it even more because I was familiar with the song.

Heh, I wish, too. But the likelihood is very slim, sadly.

Thanks. I don't normally like country, but I like that song.

Thanks, glad you liked it. It's definitely not my favourite that I've written, but if you guys like it, I guess it's okay.

How was it sad? I mean, okay, sad that they died, but . . .

Thanks. Like I said above, I'm not really into country music, most of it I actually loathe, but I like this one.
I've found that I frequently end up thinking of the vignette whenever I hear a song that's been used in a songfic. Glad I'm not the only one.
