	Chapter fourteen Jaina took an extra second before getting out of the speeder. She felt a burgeoning joy in her chest at Jacen’s acceptance of her identity, but at the same time, Cem’s labored breathing put a vice-grip on her heart. And then there was Jag. She told herself that he couldn’t be dead. She would know it if he died. Jacen opened the backseat and withdrew Cem’s unconscious body. “I’ll take him to the med-lab –“ “I’m coming,” Jaina said instantly, but Jacen shook his head in a silent disagreement. “Why not?” Jaina demanded. Jacen laid Cem on a repulsor bed, and tilted his head toward a figure that Jaina hadn’t noticed. Kyp. She sighed and slipped from the vehicle, anticipating trouble. She had abandoned the Jedi Master – recklessly – to whatever explanation Khay Don had come up with. For her impatience alone she supposed she deserved him believing whatever the imposter had said. “Listen, Kyp –“ she began. He held up one hand. “Not now. We have a bit of a mystery to clear up, and you have a case to present before the Jedi Council.” Jaina blinked. “The entire council?” Kyp scoffed at her. “Of course not. All twelve members aren’t on Ossus at the moment. You’ll be speaking with Masters Skywalker, Skywalker, Horn, Katarn, and myself.” Jaina sucked at the inside of her lip. “Can’t I go with Cem until they’re all assembled?” “Only one member is away at the moment,” Kyp said. “Me. I volunteered to escort you from here to there.” She bit back a grimace. “How’d you even know I was here anyway?” she asked. Exiting the speeder to find Kyp waiting for her was a bit disconcerting. Jacen either sensed or guessed where her confusion was coming from. “Lowie said he left you at Crescent Canyon. I asked the council permission to go and retrieve you.” Oh. Well, that made sense. Except she still didn’t want to go and sit in a room full of Jedi Masters while Cem was poisoned and dying. She cast a longing look at Cem and stepped close to him. “You’ll make sure he stays safe, won’t you Jace?” “I promise,” Jacen said solemnly. She squeezed Cem’s hand lightly and turned away from him, squaring her shoulders. “Lead on,” she said softly to Kyp. ** Her uncle gave her a reassuring smile when she entered the room, but that didn’t mean much to Jaina. Luke Skywalker was the type of person who cared about everyone. He could sense her nervousness and was simply attempting to quell them. He didn’t mean that things would turn out well for her in the least. Situated throughout the room, the other Council members present viewed her silently for several moments, no doubt probing her through the Force. On what looked like a desk, Jaina could just make out a copy of the medical report Cighal had prepared. Well, it looked like they were acquainted with the facts. The only problem was there were two versions of the facts and Jaina had no idea which one they were adhering to. She walked to the center of the room, and stopped, gazing at each of the Jedi Masters in turn. What would they say? What would they do? She wasn’t sure she was mentally strong enough to withstand whatever they actions they would take. Corran’s eyes widened as she came to a stop. “Sithspit, she looks just like Jaina.” “She certainly does,” Kyp agreed jovially. “But then you knew that from Cighal’s report, didn’t you?” He had moved to the far wall and was leaning against it casually, his green eyes glinting with humor. “It’s still shocking,” the Corellian Jedi said, sounding amazed. Kyle Katarn spoke up, “Never mind what she looks like. What I want to know is why she was fighting Jaina Solo in the med-lab.” He raised one dark brown eyebrow, waiting for her explanation. In a way having Master Katarn ask that question didn’t really hurt. She had never really associated with the older Jedi, and didn’t take his rejection or suspicion poorly. “She attacked Cem.” “Cem Flare?” Mara asked in surprise. “She wouldn’t dare.” Jaina frowned slightly, confused by the utter conviction in Mara’s statement. “He’s in the med-lab with Jacen right now. I’m sure he can testify – provided he lives – that she attacked him.” Saying the ‘provided he lives part’ forced her to recall him unconscious on the repulsor bed, and she had a strong desire to leave the room and check on him. Corran kept her on topic. “Who exactly is ‘she’?” he asked. “Who attacked Cem Flare?” “Weren’t you briefed?” Jaina asked, a bit bitterly. “I was told that Jaina Solo and a brainwashed clone fought in the med-lab. I’d like to hear it from your own mouth.” Kyp pushed away from the wall. “We have no proof that either girl is a brainwashed clone –“ Corran nodded, accepting that statement readily. “All the same, I’d like to hear what this ‘Jaina’ has to say about the incident in the med-lab.” His eyes flickered over Jaina. “Well, who is ‘she’? Who attacked Flare?” Jaina took a deep breath and let it out slowly through her nose. “Her name is Khay Don. She’s a Yuuzhan Vong priestess. At the end of the Vong War I was captured by a battalion of rouge Yuuzhan Vong. While in their captivity they copied my memories into one of their own, stole the Force from me, and sent her back her to cause havoc.” Was that everything? Probably. Would they believe her? Probably not. Mara reacted first this time. “If what you say is true, she did a bad job of things,” Mara said. “I’ve worked with Jaina over the past six years, and she’s only tried to help rebuild the galaxy – not counting the Killik engagement.” “Mara has a point,” Luke said softly. “Besides, we’ve already gone over –“ Kyp, as bold as ever, interrupted Luke, “Do you care to address Mara’s point, Jaya?” After battling down the traditional irritation at Kyp’s disrespectful interruption, Jaina spoke. “I know this is going to sound strange,” she began. “But . . . she likes being me. She feels that she’s loved and admired by everyone –“ “Hardly feelings that a Vong cares about,” Corran pointed out calmly. “Everyone wants to be loved,” Jaina responded instantly. “Not necessarily,” Luke said softly. “But for the most part, yes. I will agree with you on that point.” Katarn cleared his throat. “Let’s not diverge from the point. Why were you fighting Jaina Solo?” Jaina growled in vexation. “I wasn’t attacking myself, I was attacking Khay Don.” She shot a dark glare at the Jedi Master and added, “Because she attacked Cem.” “And how did you discover this?” Katarn asked, not specifying whether he wanted to know how she’d learned she wasn’t attacking herself or how she had discovered that Cem had been attacked.” In a way, both answers were the same, so Jaina offered only one response. “She confessed.” “Why?” Katarn demanded sharply. “Why would she incriminate herself in such a fashion?” “She wants – wanted – me to leave and never come back –“ “Why? Because you coerced Jacen into physically fighting her? Because you keep insisting that she’s a Yuuzhan Vong? Because you’re trying to turn her family against her –“ Katarn asked, gaining momentum with each question. “That’s not it at all!” Jaina blurted out. Then she considered. Essentially the reasons Katarn was listing were the same ones Khay Don was concerned about. “Well, maybe that’s part of the reason.” “So you’re guilty?” Katarn said pointedly. “Guilty? Of what?” Jaina demanded. She was starting to feel hot and bothered. Why the hell was she getting questioned like this? “Did you or did you not initiate the fight?” Katarn asked. “I –“ Jaina began, but he interrupted her. “Did you throw the first punch? Kick? Attack?” She gritted her teeth so hard that her jaw hurt. “Yes, I threw the first punch,” she said darkly. “And next time I do it –“ Kyp interrupted this time, his voice holding a clear warning for her not to voice any dark thoughts swimming through her head. “What enticed you to attack an armed Jedi Knight?” Jaina’s voice got soft, as she thought back to the moment. “She said she killed Cem.” She looked at the floor and then back up at the Jedi. “So you attacked for revenge?” Corran asked. “That’s hardly the Jedi thing to do.” “It might not be the ‘Jedi-thing to do’ but it certainly isn’t unheard of for Jedi to act in ways unbecoming,” Kyp said. He spread his arms to the side. “Take myself shortly after I fell to the Dark Side. Take Jaina Solo herself after Anakin’s death.” “She’s been on Ossus for three days,” Mara said. “I hardly think that she could have gotten to know Cem enough to push her to the Dark Side.” “Well if you ask me,” Katarn said, “She can’t fall to the Dark Side because she doesn’t have the Force. And since Jaina Solo is Force-sensitive . . .” he shrugged, letting his words trail off, the suggestion obvious. “She already explained that –“ Kyp began. “You just enjoy being difficult,” Katarn accused Kyp. A minor squabble broke out between the two of them, with Corran adding a fueled comment here and there. Luke, sighing, finally stood up. “Enough,” he said quietly, and the room fell silent. Into the silence, Jaina asked a question that had been bugging her since she had arrived. “Aunt Mara said that the imposter-Jaina wouldn’t dare attack Cem. Why?” “”Master Skywalker will suffice,” Mara said. “And we have our reasons for letting Cem train here.” They all know, Jaina thought. They all know that he’s a spy. She thought about Brakiss, one of Luke’s former students who had trained while spying on the Jedi. They’re basically doing the same thing with Cem. She played coy. “What reasons? Are you hoping to convert him?” “Convert?” Corran asked. His eyes narrowed, his years in CorSec making him unusually suspicious. “He is working for the Chiss, isn’t he?” Jaina asked casually, hoping that she had read the situation correctly and wasn’t revealing him. “What makes you say that?” Corran asked. “She had that’s why she ‘killed’ him.” Luke frowned and keyed a comm. After a moment the door opened and Khay Don walked in, Zekk at her side. “I need the truth,” he said simply. “Did you attack Cem Flare?” “Yes, but he attacked first,” Khay Don said. “Why didn’t you tell us this sooner?” Kyp demanded. “Why bother?” Khay Don asked. She ran a hand through her hair. “I suppose you’ve heard both sides of the story now.” She glanced at Luke. “Have you reached a decision Grandmaster Skywalker? Grandmaster? Jaina thought. Since when? Luke nodded slowly. “Jaina, I know that this must be very hard on you. However, any more attacks on Jay will not be tolerated. If I hear of any – no matter if they can be proven or not – you and Zekk will both be sent to Dagaboh to meditate until I send for you.” He turned his blue eyed gaze to Jaina. “Jay, in turn you will stop with this story –“ “No,” Jaina said simply, her heart sinking. “I will not stop telling people the truth.” Luke looked as if he had swallowed something nasty. “I’ll give you four days to reconsider,” he said finally. “If you cannot abide by my decision by that point, you will have to leave Ossus.” -----signature----- Padawn to NYCitygurl I'm more Word Processor than human; Twisted by plot bunnies and feedback cravings! 	Hmmm. Its hard to know what anyone is thinking here. I contend that a lot of them know or believe things that they're not talking about. Corran sounds like his beligerant self, and yet I wonder whether he and some of the other Jedi are acting as Devil's Advocates while trying to figure out which Jaina is Jaina.
