Chapter six
“What?” Kyp asked.
Yeah, Jaina thought, what? She turned to watch her father approach and suppressed a sigh. It wasn’t really that surprising that he had come over to warn one of his oldest friends about the ‘Vong-imposter’ was it?
Kyp narrowed his green eyes at Han suspiciously. “I think I know what your daughter looks like, Han,” he said in a tone that indicated he assumed the ex-smuggler was attempting to pull a fast prank.
Han moved his hands harmlessly to the side and shrugged. “Hey, I never said she didn’t look like Jaina. I said she wasn’t Jaina.”
“Cute,” Kyp said dryly. He turned back to Jaina. “So are you going to tell me what’s going on?” His eyes lingered on the scar on her cheek.
Jaina shifted uncomfortably under his scrutiny, and then she braced herself mentally for her upcoming rejection. “I was abducted by the Yuuzhan Vong –“
Han snorted, muttering, “Sure you were,” under his breath.
“They replaced me with –“
“Still singing the same boring old song?” Jaina turned to watch Khay Don stroll across the landing field, Zekk by her side. She came to a stop, lips twitching slightly as she took in Kyp’s confused expression.
“Her,” Jaina said firmly, tilting her head toward Khay Don.
Kyp looked back and forth between the two of them, a frown marring his features. He glanced at Han and then over at Cem, who was approaching with a slow, but confident stroll.
“Wow, this is confusing.”
Khay Don’s eyes flashed. “What’s so confusing about it?” she demanded. “This,” her lip curled as she cast her brandy brown eyes over Jaina, “Woman claims to be me.”
“Is it true?” Kyp asked.
“No,” Jaina said. “I am most certainly not claiming to be her.”
Han frowned. “I thought you were.”
Refusing to meet her father’s eyes, Jaina said, “I am Jaina Solo. I have no delusions about being a Vong priestess. She, on the other hands, has delusions about being a human Jedi.”
By this point, Cem had arrived. Without speaking, he came to a stop slightly behind Jaina, blue eyes alert for the slightest indication of danger.
But Khay Don wasn’t about to result to violence on the landing field in the presence of a Jedi Master and the man she called her father. “She’s lying or befuddled. I am Jaina Solo.”
Kyp’s frown melted away. “I suppose this can be proven,” he said mischievously.
Han gave him an incredulous look. “Luke’s already confirmed it. Jacen has already confirmed it. Leia has already confirmed it.”
Kyp waved him down. “Relax Han, I just want to hear both sides of the story.” He winched slightly. “Call it a precaution. I already know the dangers of jumping to conclusions.” Cardia had taught him that lesson, and in spite of his rash actions, he always tried to weigh in all the details.
“What is there to tell?” Khay Don asked.
“Well . . . how about a question from your past,” Kyp asked after a second.
“Fine,” Khay Don said instantly.
“That won’t work,” Jaina said. “She has all my memories.”
“We could test that theory,” Kyp said. He pursed his lips. “But what to ask.”
Zekk spoke up for the first time, his voice more masculine than Jaina remembered. “That isn’t really necessary. Jaina and I share our thoughts, and –“
“- He knows who I am,” Khay Don concluded. “I know intimate details from his past and he knows intimate details from mine.”
“Name one,” Kyp commanded.
Khay Don looked at Zekk. “Why don’t . . .”she began, and he picked up immediately.
“After the Vong war –“
Cem cleared his throat. “Something before the end of the Vong War, if you please. Jaina has no reason to share memories of the time when you were pretending to be her.”
Kyp’s green eyes seemed to sparkle more vividly. “I take it that you believe her story?”
Cem nodded crisply once. “Of course.”
Whether he actually did or not remained to be seen, but the words gave Jaina heart. Actually, Kyp’s antics – even if he was just stirring up trouble – were strengthening her weakening resolve. The only problem was she couldn’t figure out how she could prove her point.
“Jacen and I share a twin-bond. Would a Vong be able to duplicate that?” Zekk asked.
Everyone looked at him a bit sidelong. Jaina, in particular, was shocked to hear him saying such a thing. The only person who didn’t seem bothered was Khay Don.
Kyp raised his eyebrows, glancing at Jaina. “Well?”
“They stripped me of the Force,” Jaina said softly. “She has my powers . . . I imagine that when she did the switch she took my bond with Jacen as well.”
“The Force comes from midi-cloridians, how in the world can those be stripped away from you? They’re bonded to your physiological structure,” Khay Don said. A sympathetic expression fluttered across her face. “We’re truly sorry that you believe you’re Jaina Solo, but feel that it would be best if you gave up on this wild idea.”
Jaina swallowed hard. “I can’t let you pretend to be me?”
“Why?” Khay Don asked before she could stop herself.
Zekk kept going for her, while she stopped to reflect on what she said. “Why can’t you give up this charade? No one believes you.” He hesitated, a strange look flashing through his emerald eyes. “Do you even believe? Really believe that you’re Jaina Solo?”
He stepped forward, cupping her chin and tilting her head up towards him. “You’re not who you think you are, Jay.”
Looking into his eyes, Jaina got the distinct impression that he was truly concerned for her. “You need to let go of this delusion. You’re not the only person you’re harming.” He gestured to Han, who was alternating looking between the two nearly identical brunette women. “Han has suffered enough as of late.”
“He’s taken our Joining hard,” Khay Don said. She stepped closer to Han, laying one hand on his forearm. Jaina had the satisfaction of seeing her father actually jump a bit at her touch. Clearly he wasn’t comfortable with this side of his daughter.
“And you’re confusing the others as well,” Zekk said. “Look at poor Master Durron.”
Against her will, Jaina’s eyes were drawn to Kyp, who was frowning slightly, his lips moving in a silent echo of Zekk’s words. Then, abruptly realizing what the younger Jedi had said, he spoke up. “I’m not poor or confused.”
Zekk didn’t stop talking. “Look at me,” he commanded, voice soft. “You. Are. Not. Jaina. Solo.”
Jaina looked back at him, taking in the complete familiarity of him and the sharp changes that time had gradually worked onto his face. He had been her first love, hadn’t he? A street urchin with a knack for finding things. She had wasted hours of her early teens stressing out about what he thought of her.
She had fantasized that one day she would marry him and have a set of twins of her own. Hell, she’d even picked out names: Zaire and Zack. And they were going to have black hair and green eyes.
She had never really given up on that dream. There had never really been a conscious point when she stopped thinking about him. But it had happened all the same. One day she had realized that she didn’t love him.
But more than that, he didn’t seem to care about her either. That had been on Hapes. He’d told her that she was going down a path that he couldn’t follow. In reality, they hadn’t been on the same path in years. If they had ever been on the same path at all.
Right now, looking into his eyes, she wasn’t sure what she saw anymore. They would never be together, and she didn’t want them to be either. But for the second time she doubted her own story.
Was she really just a Shaped prisoner who had been led to believe she was Jaina Solo? Was she a Vong? She didn’t know, and the uncertainly snaked its way through her body, making her heart beat faster and her vision blur with confusion.
Cem placed his hands on her hips and pulled her away from Zekk. “That’s enough,” he said, voice low and with just a hint of warning to it. “Take your Joiner woman and rub antennae someplace else.”
She shook her head, shaking off the thoughts. “How can you be certain that she is Jaina Solo?” she asked quietly, needing to know Zekk’s answer.
“I love her,” he said simply.
Jaina looked at the duracrete floor. She reflected on their past. “I don’t think you ever really loved me,” she said softly. “More you loved the idea of me.”
Zekk looked at her in confusion. “That’s not true.”
She shrugged, deliberately turning away from him. “Master Durron . . .” She bit her lip, wondering what was the right thing to say – wondering if there was a right thing to say. “I –“
Kyp was still scowling at Zekk. “I hope you don’t plan on sneaking off before I get your side of the story,” he said. “I believe in keeping an open mind about these things.”
“I’m not giving you my so-called side of the story,” Jaina said.
“Why not?” Kyp asked. He looked surprised, but so did the others gathered. Han’s brown eyes widened and Khay Don took a step forward, mouth gaping slightly. Complete and total surprise flashed across Zekk’s face. The only person who didn’t seem surprised was Cem. His mouth quirked in a smirk at her declaration and he crossed his arms.
“Why not?” Zekk asked, breathless with surprise.
Jaina shrugged. “Why bother, you’re not going to believe me anyway.” She glanced at Cem, who was alternating a haughty glare between Zekk and Khay Don. “I’m heading back inside the Temple, are you coming?”
“Yeah.”
Jaina repressed the urge to say something to Han, fearing that he would respond sharply. Walking beside Cem, she started toward the Temple.
As they neared the edge of the landing field, the sound of pursuit split the relative silence. “Wait, we need to talk!” Han shouted.

Wow what a great and sad chapter at the same time. Though I think that from that last Han is starting to question who's who, and I think Kyp might be swayed to the truth as well. Cem is starting to be an interesting character too!
