Chapter eight
It was a nagging feeling in the pit of her stomach, but Jaina knew that Cem would never have just taken off without telling her. Even if she didn’t know him that well, she had learned early in life to trust her gut feeling (or the Force), and it was telling her that Cem was trustworthy.
She darted into the hallway. “Khay Don!” she called after the Vong imposter. “Where did Cem say he was going?”
She didn’t break stride in the slightest bit, but Zekk hesitated.
“Zekk!” Jaina shouted, calling out to him. She watched his shoulders tense, and then he continued along his way.
Biting back a curse, she raced after the two Joiner-Jedi. Neither of them paid her any attention, but the stiffness in Zekk’s shoulders suggested that he was unhappy about something.
She had a feeling that if she talked to Zekk, she might learn something valuable. But only if she could get him alone. Abandoning her pursuit, she headed into the mess hall, her eyes scanning for either a sign of Cem or someone else who would be able to aid her plan.
She didn’t see Cem anywhere, but she did spot Jacen. Without hesitation, she headed over to her younger brother. “Jacen, I need your help.”
He looked up from a datapad, an off-guard look flashing across his bearded face. “With what, Jay?” he asked carefully. He tucked the datapad into a pocket in his robes, watching her cautiously.
Jaina frowned. He was up to something. She had seen that same look on his face a million times before – usually when he had some forbidden but exotic pet tucked away someplace. A pet that he wanted and needed to check on, but couldn’t afford to get caught with.
“What are you hiding?” she asked, thrown off for a second.
A look flashed through his eyes, surprise followed by a hardened resolve. “Nothing. You said you needed my help –“
Her mouth twisted into a smile. “I know you’re hiding something, Jacen. I’ve seen that look on your face before.” She sighed, thoughts slipping wistfully to her past. “But you don’t have to tell me what you’ve got stashed away.”
An uneasy flicker slipped across his face. So he does have something stashed, Jaina thought, but decided now was not the time to push things. “I need you to distract Khay Don.”
“Who?”
Jaina sighed. “Joiner-Jaina. Your so-called twin sister.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m going to ambush her mind-mate and get some answers.”
Jacen hesitated. He clearly had other things on his mind. His own personal agenda for the day.
“Come on,” Jaina cajoled. “You owe me a minor favor anyway.”
“I do? For what?”
“I made you a Pygmy cage before we started our Jedi training officially,” Jaina said. “You promised me one minor favor. I’m collecting.”
Jacen looked a bit surprised. “How do you know about that?”
“I’m not the one pretending to be your sister,” Jaina responded.
Jacen seemed to ponder that. “I’ll distract my sister, but you’ll owe me a favor in return to be called in whenever I want.”
“Deal,” Jaina said instantly.
“Why do I get the feeling that I just got stiffed?” Jacen murmured. He stood up, stretching slightly. “Oh well, I think I know just the thing to distract her with.”

She found Zekk alone in the fountain room a few hours later. He was sitting rather stiffly, trailing his fingers through the water. As she approached, he spoke. “Hello, Jaina.”
“Zekk,” she responded carefully. “Where’s Cem?”
Zekk’s fingers, splayed over the water, curled into a fist. “I can’t tell you that, Jaina.” His knuckles were whitening because he was holding his fist so tight. With a quick, sharp motion, he slammed it into the water, shattering the tranquility of the surface.
Roughly he stood up and faced Jaina. “Just leave.”
“I –“
He flicked his hand opened, sending droplets of water flying at her and pushing her back with the Force at the same time. “Leave, Jaina. If you value the friendship we once had, you’ll leave now.”
“So you know . . .” Jaina murmured softly. She had suspected as much, but hearing it confirmed was heart wrenching. He had known she was in Vong captivity and he hadn’t tried to rescue her. He knew who she was, but was content to simply insist that she was a fake.
He shook his head. “You don’t understand.”
“You’re right,” Jaina said, tightly. “I don’t. Explain it to me.”
He walked over to her, tilting her head upward to look at him. “You don’t deserve to be –“
Jaina jerked away from him. “I don’t deserve to be me?” she snapped. “I –“ But her mouth was suddenly stuck shut. Her eyes flashing with anger, she tried to raise her hands, but found that they were being held at her side.
“Listen to me,” Zekk said softly. “I don’t want to hurt you, but you can’t stay here. You need to let things go as they are. People are happier this way. Promise me you’ll leave and never return.”
He released his Force-hold on her mouth. “People are happier?” she spat, angry at being held immobile by someone she had once considered a good friend. “I’m not happier.”
Zekk turned away from her, a hooded look slipping into his eyes. “Do you think that Khay Don was able to impersonate you perfectly from the beginning?” He laughed softly. “She did a horrible job.”
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying that anyone who knew you . . . knew that she wasn’t you.” He turned, and met her eyes unflinchingly. “We accepted her. We all knew she wasn’t you. We knew.”
Jaina took a step back, body suddenly freed from his Force-grip, but now held in a grip of denial. “That’s . . . that’s not true. That’s impossible.”
“It is the truth. Even now, we know. We all know the truth. We just choose to ignore it.” He sighed and started toward one of the doors leading into the room. “Just leave Jaina. Disappear. Go away. Leave us happy. Leave us alone.”
There was a low buzzing in Jaina’s head. A nagging voice telling her that she wasn’t only being rejected, she was being thrown aside. She was being ignored. Of course the Vong wouldn’t have been able to impersonate her perfectly. Of course everyone knew that she had been replaced.
Tears filled her eyes again, but with them, a stubborn resolve firmed. “Where’s Cem?” she asked harshly.
Zekk stopped walking. “He was a spy. We . . . dealt with him.”
“A spy?” Jaina demanded. This was solid. She could deal with this now. Later, when she was alone and safe, she could shed tears for her lost past and treacherous friends. She rushed across the room, maneuvering so she was directly in front of Zekk. “What kind of a spy?”
“For the Chiss.”
Jaina reeled back, shocked at the acid in his tone. “The Chiss? What reason do they have to spy on us?”
“They hate Jedi because we sided with the Kind in the Swarm War,” Zekk answered. “They thought that the Kind was eating their POW’s.” An earnest expression flittered across his face. “We weren’t.”
“Is that when you shot Jag down?”
“I didn’t shoot him down. I wanted to, and Khay tried. And your mother succeeded.”
“And now the Chiss are sending spies?” she demanded.
“Just one. But we took care of him.” He looked to the distance. “They’ll never be able to prove it though.”
“Tell me –“
He pushed her out of his way gently with the Force. “No. Leave.”

I don't like Zekk either. How could he like fake jaina better? It's just wrong.
 Please say something really bad didn't happen to Cem.

wow. This makes you actually feel sorry for Jaina.
First she's impersonated, then she is given a friend, and then he's taken away as well...

Likewise, I don't think it's as cut an dry as Zekk is making it out to be. I think Zekk enjoys having Khay Don to himself as his Jaina-toy.

There must be more to that than Zekk is letting on.  This is a refirmation why I'm rooting for Jaina/Jag. Zekk has no backbone.

I want to believe that's why Han was chasing after her before. But something tells me that Zekk is making that part up. I bet you fake Jaina convinced him if he admitted what he knew he would lose Jaina forever. We don't like fake Jaina.
What the heck did they do to Cem? Don't they know that by making him disappear that it will probably only affirm the true Jaina's story?
Oh, and what is Jacen hiding? Is it part of this story or perhaps something than can spawn another fic about him?
I'm very interested to know that and see the real Jaina start kicking some major behinds...

So Jaina doesn't have the Force correct? Well either way I want her to scratch Zekk's eyes out.
And another question...is Jag alive?
I love this fic. It's so awesome. Somehow everyone needs to find out about Jaina and Khay...I feel so bad for Jaina though, especially after what Zekk just said to her. Well, maybe she'll head out to the unknown regions looking for Jag or something...maybe patch things up?
