Just so you know . . . Mace is so going to call Anakin a wee nipper sometime during the course of this fic. ::nods head for emphasis::

Kidan

I completely agree with you about Luke’s bias being bad for the order. But then again, he was just one more character that I didn’t like how he was portrayed in the Dark Nest Trilogy. Hell, I think the only characters I really enjoyed reading about were Jag and Leia (until she shot Jag down).

Everyone else . . . (wait, Han was good . . .) was somewhat of a disappointment.

::thinks up a couple other people who made good impressions:: Er.. actually let’s just say that there were more I was disappointed with, but it wasn’t everyone.

Any chance that we get to see Jango Fett?

Currently I’m playing around with the idea of doing ‘viggies’ of characters that don’t fit into my storyline but I want to have in the setting all the same.

Characters that are being considered for their own one-shot spin-off story are:

Jango Fett (at the top of the list)
General Grievous (Jedi and machine, what could be worse?)
Thrawn (hesitant on this one . . .)

But then again, any of them might make it into the fic anyway . . . so . . . doh!

skywalkerlover00 and Corellian_Cutie

Yes, that would get confusing. So, at the moment I don’t have plans for repeats of any characters.

I reserve the right to change my mind later. grin peace

Chapter four, ignorance

Ossus, Jedi Temple

Luke Skywalker stood on a slightly raised dais staring at his students. “The Vong are expanding. Somehow they’re recovering fleets that we’ve already destroyed.”

Kyp Durron stepped forward, a challenge in his green eyes. “That’s not all. I was in the Yavin system and could swear I saw the Death Star.”

Luke pursed his lips. That was one of the more worrisome of the stories he had been receiving since earlier that day when he had felt reality strain. “Were you able to find anything else out?”

Kyp shook his head, sending shaggy dark hair flying. “No. I think it jumped into hyperspace.”

Corran Horn spoke up. “Did you get a lock on its trajectory?”

“I followed the ion trail to Toprawa. From there it could have gone anywhere.”

“If it went to Toprawa, it’s probably traveling along the Corellian Run,” Corran commented. He shifted uncomfortably, not really wanting to talk about this. There had been disturbing reports from Tatoonie that his son had been captured by the Vong, but as of yet, nothing had been confirmed.

Mara brought the topic around to Tatoonie for him. She hadn’t been attending to the meeting of Jedi masters, but now that she entered the room, she had everyone’s attention. “I just talked to Jacen.”

Jacen had been on Tatoonie with Tahiri and Valin. Corran swallowed hard, waiting for the news and praying that it would be good.

Mara gave him an apologetic look and then directed her attention to Luke. “He says the others were captured. He was left abandoned in the desert . . .” her voice trailed off.

“And?” Kenneth Hammer prompted.

“And he ended up in Jabba’s palace. He claims that the spice-lord was there alive. They tried to take him prisoner, but he escaped to Mos Espa. From all reports, things aren’t going much better there. It’s absolute chaos.”

Luke raised his hand, running it through his sandy blond hair in frustration. “That fits with what Chief of State Cal Omas told me earlier. Nearly every planet in the Alliance is reporting some sort of difficulties. Droid armies. Stormtroopers.”

“Clone troopers,” Hammer said.

“So what are we going to do?” Tionne asked, speaking up for the first time. The silver haired Jedi master smoothed the front of her robes down, stepping forward. “If we do not find some way to restore order, the galaxy may be lost forever.”

“Or are we not going to act?” Kyp demanded harshly. “If you called me here to consul me to inaction, I’ll have none of it.” He looked around the room, staring at each Jedi Master in turn. “It is the duty of a Jedi to restore order to the galaxy. If we have to kill to do that . . .” he let his words trail off and shrugged. “You all know how I feel.”

Luke started to speak, but then fell silent. A scream worked its way through the Force. A powerful tear in the fabric of the universe. It was as Obi-wan had said years and years ago “. . . as if millions of voice suddenly cried out in pain and terror only to be silence suddenly.” He staggered, visibly shaken. Except it wasn’t like that. Not at all. It was more like, “Millions of voices had cried out in terror . . . and abruptly weren’t afraid anymore. In fact, Luke had never felt such widespread confusion before.

“What was that?” Tionne asked softly.

Luke shook his head numbly. “I don’t know.” He ran his hands over his face. “I really don’t know.”

Hyperspace, Deathdealer

“He pisses me off.”

Obi-wan grunted a non-committal response, far too preoccupied with his attempted meditation to pay much attention to his ranting Jedi companion.

“And he’s arrogant.”

This Obi-wan couldn’t ignore. He quirked an eyebrow. “Really? And you’re what? A well-grounded Jedi who believes that he is equal to his peers?”

Anakin’s scowl deepened. “That’s not what I mean.”

Obi-wan shrugged. “I have heard you called arrogant before Anakin. I’m only suggesting that you should be wary of the labels that you assign to others. They may very well represent you better than you think.”

“Well maybe I am arrogant, but at least I’m not ignorant.” Anakin sat down abruptly. “How could he even think that we were dead? And what the hell is the battle of Yavin. I’ve never heard of it.”

Obi-wan signed, giving up on his meditation for the moment. “How do you expect me to know the answers to those questions? I’m just as confused as you are.” He frowned. “And I’ll bet almost anything that your real concern right now isn’t that Captain Fel feels you’re dead.”

“Then what is my concern?” Anakin demanded darkly. He shifted moodily, crossing his arms and glaring.

“Padme,” Obi-wan said carefully, watching the younger Jedi twitch at the mere mention of her name. He could practically see tension singing through his broad shoulders, feel the anger and fear coiling through his mind and heart. He sighed heavily. Some lessons never seemed to sink in to some people.

“You need to let go of your anger and fear. They will cloud your judgment.”

Anakin glared at his master, but didn’t respond verbally. In fact, now didn’t seem like a good time to challenge Obi-wan. He pushed his fear and anger away to the fore corners of his mind, wrapping it up and attempting to conceal it. Once he felt he had his emotions under control he spoke. “Have you sensed anything . . . about what’s happening to her?”

Obi-wan shook his head. “No, but considering how much interference I’m getting from you, that’s hardly surprising.” He waited the space of a heartbeat and then continued. “In fact, it might be a good idea if we both meditated on the matter. Perhaps we can find enlightenment together.”

Anakin grimaced. “No thank-you. I think I’ll explore this ship.” And track Fel down and make him explain what’s going on.

“Keep in mind that we are guests aboard this military vessel. I prefer these quarters to an up-close view of the brig,” Obi-wan cautioned.

“Meaning?”

“Don’t upset our hosts.”

Anakin smiled wryly. “Would I do such a thing?” he asked innocently. Not giving his master a chance to respond, he pushed the door open button with the Force and stepped into the hallway.

Deathdealer, on-route to Csillia, officers lounge

“There you are.”

Jag Fel refused to stiffen at the sound of the Jedi approaching. He had watched the dark eyed young man enter the room and stroll arrogantly toward his table. He knew that he was the main target and that this Jedi wanted something from him. Therefore he had no need to stiffen.

Still, if what they had said was true, then this was Darth Vader. Someone to be feared, if not respected. No, Jag mused, Darth Vader was not really deserving of respect. He ruled through power and fear, not through tactics and strategy. From the old vids he had viewed, he knew that the dark lord had been a talented pilot. But he hadn’t cared about his people. He was self-centered. And that made a lot of difference in the end.

Thrawn hadn’t been like that at all.

Anakin sat down without an invitation. “Tell me what’s going on.”

Jag quirked an eyebrow, and buried a scowl at the lack of respect the Jedi was showing him. “You’ll have to be more specific than that, Jedi Skywalker.”

He watched rage storm through Anakin’s brown eyes, and silently noted that they had a lot in common with Jaina’s eyes. She got stormy expressions like that. They had been especially bad on Hapes.

Which brought up an interesting point. Jaina was this man’s granddaughter. Jag leaned back, allowing his thoughts to linger for a brief moment on that interesting fact before stomping them out.

“You claim I’m dead, yet here I am. Explain that.”

“Fine.”

“You can explain that?” Anakin asked, caught off guard by the Chiss pilot’s agreement.

“Possibly.”

“Well then, let’s hear it.”

“You could be a clone –“

Anakin shot to his feet. “That’s outrageous.”

Jag stood up as well. “Is it?” He was finding himself very unimpressed with Anakin Skywalker. He was ruled by emotions even more than the rest of the Skywalker-Solo clan. And in battle, Jag had the sneaky feeling that the Jedi would not make objective choices, but rather ones clouded by personal opinion.

“Of course it is,” Anakin retorted hotly. “I’m not a clone.”

“Then what are you?” Jag countered. “And how do you know you’re not a clone?”

“Because –“

“Because what?” Jag prompted.

“I know who and what I am,” Anakin snapped. He sat down. “What makes you think that I’m dead?”

“I’m not ignorant of galactic history.”

“I think you are.”

Jag shook his head. “That is an opinion based on ignorance. Tell me, have you ever heard of Luke Skywalker? He’s a Jedi Master, and head of the Jedi Order.”

“Master Yoda – if anyone – is the head of the order,” Anakin responded.

That name tickled at Jag’s knowledge. Did he know a Master Yoda? There was a lot of galactic history, and even he couldn’t be expected to know it all. In fact, he was fairly certain that ‘Master Yoda’ was more important to Republic history than the Chiss and Imperial history he had received.

Anakin was still talking. “Furthermore, there is no one named Skywalker in the galaxy expect me –“

Jag interrupted. “That’s a rather bold claim, and I’ll challenge you on it. There are three Skywalkers – four if I count you – that I know of. Luke, Mara, and Ben.”

Anakin opened his mouth, but Jag continued. “There are official records that show this to be true. If you like, I’ll show them to you. And if you deem them false . . .” he let his words trail off. “That would be your choice to remain enamored in ignorance.”

That being said, he strolled past Skywalker, ignoring the tingling in his spine warning that he was pushing the man into dangerous waters. At the door he stopped and without turning called over his shoulder.

“Well, are you coming? Or do you prefer your ignorance?”

**

Deathdealer, Obi-wan’s room

Try as he might, he couldn’t sense Padme or her predicament anymore. And that, in Obi-wan’s opinion, was not a good thing. But it was more than that. There was something physically wrong with the galaxy. It was out of tune, and spiraling slowly toward destruction.

Here and there, bursts of life – brimming with the Force – were flaring into existence in tiny pockets. And on massive scales. And then there was the void. The blackness. Captain Fel had called it the Vong, and it was covering the collective beauty of the Force like a bloodstain on a white carpet.

Deep in his meditation, he barely heard the door open. At the back of his mind, he decided that it was Anakin and not to be worried about. Then the feeling struck. It was a wave of pure terror the likes of which he had never sensed before . . . which was replaced moments later by mass confusion.

He opened his blue eyes, gasping at the muddle of it all.

“What happened?”

He jumped slightly, focusing his eyes on a curly blond hair young woman sitting cross-legged across from him. She leaned forward, waiting raptly for his answer.

“Erm. I sensed something.”

The young woman leaned back. “Something good or bad?” she challenged. “Or do you know?”

Obi-wan debated that before answering. “It is difficult to decide at this point.”

“Fair enough.” The young woman brushed a hand through her hair. “I’m Wyn.”

“Obi-wan Kenobi.”

“I know. I heard you tell, Jaggie.” She twirled a strand of her hair. “But are you really? I mean, you did die, right?”

“Not yet,” Obi-wan said. “I take it by ‘Jaggie’ you mean Captain Fel.”

She smiled brightly. “Yeah.” Then a second later she quickly added, “But you had better just call him Captain Fel. He gets freaked out when I call him Jaggie. I’d hate to see what he’d do if you were to call him that.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it,” Obi-wan said, wondering exactly what this girl was doing here.

Seeming to sense what he was thinking, Wyn said, “I gave this a ton of thought, so don’t look at me too strange.”

“Go on.” This had the potential to be interesting.

“Well, there are all sorts of reports coming in that say destroyed Vong fleets are reappearing, right?”

Obi-wan thought back to the conversation he had overheard upon docking. “That seems to be correct.”

“Well, destroyed is a pretty way of saying that we killed those Vong already.” She looked at him levelly. “And you were killed already.” She intermeshed her fingers. “If you put two and two together . . . you died, but whatever is happening brought you back to life.”

Obi-wan took a deep breath, turning the thought over in his mind. It still didn’t feel like he had died, but there was a chance that the girls’ story had some credence. However, it would be impossible for him to say for certain until he had more of the facts.

Wyn got impatient waiting for his response. “What do you think?” she prompted. Mentally she had all of her fingers crossed. If people who died in the past were coming back to life that meant there was a chance her family wouldn’t be so fragmented anymore. At least that’s what she was hoping.

“It’s hard to tell at this point.”

Obi-wan watched her shoulders dip ever so slightly with disappointment. “I’m sure things will become clear shortly,” he said. He reached out and patted her shoulder reassuringly. “We will discover what is going on. I promise you.”

Interesting. Jag has a bad case of Thrawn-worship....Wonder how that will affect things..

Hopefully she gets around to it.

I realized he was on a mission, my confusion is due to the fact that he was abandoned. The Vong would not abandon him. They want him dead. Unless he was already out there, and Tahiri did not give his location out there up to the Vong. Ok I understand now.... grin

Oh, you think you do, do you? Well, I'm hear to tell you that it is not Cardia. . .
I guess it's a good thing that Caridia is not what I thought it was huh? grin

'tis not a problem. After all, its a good story with a great concept.

I am so looking forward to the meeting of the Old and New Jedi Council... If Kyp thinks that his council has a hard time doing things, just wait until he comes face to face with Yoda and Mace

Jag and Anakin's interactions are hilarious... there is no love lost between the two of them.

More please? grin I'll try to be patient!

Gr8 post, i hope u sort Anakin out he is really getting on my neves!

Mind u, he annoyed me in ROTS as well, so i guess u r doin a good job portrayin him, grin

It will be funny to see luke lecture him, about his emotions. laugh

Kyp reminds me alot of reven, with the whole frustration at the jedi for not acting. thinking i never thought about that b4.

Oh there's a thought, r u gona bring in some people who r from pre movie time? Like some acent sith lord, or prehaps even reven him self, i love that character. hint hint praying laugh
