Thanks for the info. I'll have to re-read the Edge of Victory books.

Chapter six, Introductions

Coruscant, Jedi Temple

All around her were Jedi Masters of the old Order. It would have been enough to make the strongest of Jedi quail, but Tahiri – while being far from the strongest – was too impatient to notice.

“Gah! While you’re here asking stupid questions, the Yuuzhan Vong are out there preparing an attack force!” she snapped finally. “Have you no sense of urgency?”

“Patience,” Yoda advised.

Tahiri growled, throwing her hands up in fustration. “Easy for you to say, you’re a bunch of old dead Jedi –“

“We’re not dead,” Mace said firmly. “Try and focus on the question.” He steepled his fingers, leaning forward and staring at her intently. For almost any being in the galaxy, his mere presence was enough to keep things moving the way he wanted them to.

With Tahiri, he was finding out that the norms didn’t ring true.

The bare-footed girl looked over at the tall Jedi master with a heavy sigh, as if resigning herself to answering his question. Then she asked, “What was the question again?”

“How did Palpatine take over the Senate? Didn’t anyone oppose him?” Shak Ti reminded her before Mace could respond.

She barely gave her answer a thought. “Hell yeah, but those who opposed –“ she drew her thumb across her neck, “Dead.”

“I don’t understand how something like that could happen –“ Ki-adi-mundi said. “The Jedi were aware that there was a Sith, but for it to penetrate such a high level of government . . .” his words trailed off and he shook his long head wearily. “How could such a thing happen?” he repeated.

Tahiri gave a careless shrug of her shoulders. “Dunno, you guys were ‘Guardians of the Old Republic’ weren’t you?”

“The Jedi are guardians of peace,” Luminara Unduli, another Jedi master spoke up.

“Well, then in answer to how it happened, I guess I have an answer after all.”

Mace’s eyebrows shot up. “Oh?”

She nodded. “Yep. Clearly you guys messed up. Made a mistake and it cost the galaxy peace. Now you’re here, making the same mistake again.”

“Come to this conclusion, how did you?” Yoda asked.

“Simple, you knew there was a Sith but didn’t take action. Now you know there’s a Yuuzhan Vong threat and you’re obsessed with details from an Era that is gone and never coming back.”

She turned the last words over in her mind, and furrowed her brow, drawing Mace’s attention to the three vertical scars. They were fairly similar to the scars on one of the earlier Vong attacker’s forehead. Before he could comment on them, Tahiri spoke up, voice thoughtful.

“But you know, I might be wrong when I say that that Era will never return.” She rubbed the side of her neck. “Because you’re here and now, aren’t you? That means a bit of that era is back.

“Yes, we are,” Luminara said softly. “But tell us more about Darth Vader. I find it disturbing that young Anakin Skywalker could become the type of person that you have described.”

“What’s there to tell?”

“How could he fall?”

Tahiri pursed her lips. “Haven’t any of you felt the call of the Dark Side? It’s easier to fall than you might think, trust me, I know.” She laughed softly and bitterly. “Despair, fear . . . Those emotions run rampant during times of war.” Revenge too . . . she thought, thinking of Anakin’s death. However she didn’t think that they needed to know about that.

“I understand how despair and fear can happen during war,” Shak Ti began. “What I don’t understand is how someone trained in the arts of the Jedi could give in to those feelings.”

“If you don’t like my answer, don’t ask the question,” Tahiri retorted.

Luminara spoke up, “You have to understand where we are coming from. Anakin Skywalker showed more potential than any Jedi before him. He was brought before the Council as the Chosen One.”

“Chosen to what?” Tahiri asked, stalling for time. More potential than any Jedi before him . . . That sounded a lot like her Anakin. She remembered him in those last moments, his bright shining energy . . . He had been One with the Force before he’d even breathed his last breath.

It was ironic, she reflected, that both Anakins had always had so much in common. Great things had been expected of both of them. The only difference was that Skywalker had turned to the Dark Side, and Anakin had sacrificed his life for his mission.

Mace was talking. “There was a prophecy about the Chosen One. It was said that he would restore balance to the Force.”

Tahiri still thinking about Anakin Solo, spoke without thinking. “Well he did what he was supposed to, didn’t he? What are you complaining about?”

“He was supposed to destroy the Sith,” Mace said firmly. “Not join them.”

“Excuse me,” Tahiri said, “But balance means equal, right?”

Yoda sighed and closed his eyes. “See where you are going with this, I do.”

“I don’t,” Ki-adi-mundi confessed.

Tahiri held out both hands, palm up. “If you’ve got thousands of Jedi on this hand and just two Sith on this hand, things can hardly be equal.” To emphasize she lowered one hand. “To even things out, the Chosen One wiped out all but two of the Jedi. Then you had two Jedi and two Sith. Therefore the Force was balanced.”

Coruscant, lower levels

Valin’s leg was burning by the time they lost the Vong and acquired a hiding place. “Sithspit,” he cursed softly, pulling away the fabric and examining the wound. Sometime during the combination running and fighting, the wound had started to bleed again. And it was pussy.

“Let me see,” Siri said. She knelt down in front of him, running her hand just over the wound and probing it gently with the Force. “It’s got a minor infection. Nothing that a healing trance or a shot of antibiotics can’t cure.”

Cherith stepped closer to the Jedi, pulling an emergency med-kit from her survival bag. All Chiss pilots had a few safety items – emergency water, food, medicine, a back up charric, and a vibroblade – with them before they engaged in combat. That way if they were shot down they would be able to survive for a short while. She had been lucky enough to have it when she’d been thrown from her Clawcraft into the plant covered streets.

Soundlessly she handed the kit to Siri who opened it instantly, pulling an antibiotic patch out and placing it over the wound. “Where are we?” she asked Valin.

Cherith was curious about that as well. She had never seen a planet like this before. It was like city abandoned to the wilderness, only on a massive scale. So far she hadn’t seen anything to suggest that they were even close to the outskirts of the city.

“Coruscant,” Valin said instantly. “It sure has changed a lot, hasn’t it?”

Cherith and Siri exchanged a surprised look. “This cannot be Coruscant,” Cherith said, beating the Jedi Master to the statement.

“Why not?” Valin asked.

“Two reasons,” Cherith said instantly, her Basic tinged slightly by a foreign accent. “One, there is nothing in this galaxy that can transport someone from –“ she cut herself off with a reminder that the Republic didn’t know about the Chiss. “Transport someone from where I was to here in less than twenty minutes.”

“Well . . .” Valin began, working past her accent. “That depends on where you were, doesn’t it?”

“And second,” Siri said, picking up where Cherith left off, “Coruscant is covered by a massive city.”

“Look around,” Valin said with a wave of his hand. “We’re in a massive planet-covering city. Just because it changed a lot doesn’t make it any more or less the same place it was before.”

To Siri he added, “Come on, you’re a Jedi, can’t you sense the truth in my words?”

Siri hesitated, but nodded. With the Force, she stretched out, searching for a hint of the Jedi Temple and finding it. If that didn’t confirm the planet as Coruscant, nothing would.

“He’s telling the truth,” she said to Cherith. “How ever you got here is just another mystery.” Actually how ever she had gotten there was still confusing as well.

Valin stood up. “I’m Valin Horn,” he said, extending one hand to the blond Jedi.

“Jedi Master Siri Tachi,” she said simply, and then, with a slight frown added. “Where is your Jedi Master?”

“Well . . .” Valin said hesitating. “Probably still on Ossus.”

“Ossus?” Siri asked. “What were you doing on Ossus?”

“Studying at the Jedi Temple there,” Valin answered. “But . . .” Now he was really hesitating, but telling a lie or even stretching the truth wasn’t going to be much help. “But I decided that I wanted to help with the War and left without permission.”

Siri gave him a stern look, assuming that he meant the Cone War. “A padawan such as yourself is not equipped to be traveling the galaxy alone –“

“Yeah but –“

“No buts,” Siri said sternly. “The rules are in place for your own protection Padawan Horn. You must learn to respect and honor them.”

Valin sighed tightly. “Yes Master Tachi,” he said, wondering briefly at who she was and where she had come from. He certainly didn’t remember a Master Tachi, but then again, he didn’t know every Jedi Master in the galaxy.

Still he would have thought he’d have heard of one as headstrong and bossy as her.

“Come. The Jedi Council will determine your fate,” she said firmly.

Valin sighed. “Yeah, I suppose I had that coming, didn’t I?” He glanced over at Cherith, who was watching the conversation silently. “So . . . are you going to introduce yourself?”

The young woman nodded once. “I’m Cherith,” she said simply. She tucked a strand of blond hair behind her ear and gave a small smile. She had already decided that her last name of Fel could possibly identify her as an Imperial – a dangerous assumption for people to carry about her in Republic space. For the time being, she would hold her true identify a secret.

“If you don’t mind, I’ll accompany you to the Jedi Temple,” she added.

Valin rolled his eyes. “Of course you will. We can’t just leave you here on Coruscant. We’re taking you with us when we leave the planet.”

“We’re not leaving the planet, the Jedi Temple is in the 500 district, and we’re heading there,” Siri said. To Cherith she added, “It is a pleasure to meet you.”

“Wait,” Valin objected. “There are no Jedi on Coruscant except us and Tahiri.”

“Use the Force,” Siri commanded. “Can’t you sense the Temple?”

Valin stretched out with his feelings and found the Jedi Temple. “What the . . .” he murmured. “How is that possible? Did it move?”

“Come along,” Siri said. “We have a lot of ground to cover. And no. It didn’t move. It’s been in the same spot for thousands of years.”

“But –“ Valin began.

“No, buts, Padawan Horn. Let’s go.”

Coruscant, Vong HQ

“The mysterious building that has appeared is full of jeedai.”

Overlord Shimmra bit back a scowl. Using it had upped their military numbers by an overwhelming amount. But if it was going to be brining jeedai back from the dead as well . . . Was it really worth it?

“What are your orders?” the Vong dared to ask.

In response, Shimmra struck him sharply, killing him with one blow. “Order one hundred warriors to destroy the jeedai,” he commanded. He would have his victory. He would.

But maybe, he mused, it would be simpler if he simply destroyed the structure from the sky. An orbital bombardment. It would certainly be less costly then battling the Jedi.

But that would cause discontent in the ranks of the warriors. They were thirsting for a chance to engage jeedai in combat. Denying them would gain him nothing. Besides there was no way that the Jedi could escape.

Content that his plans would go as planned. He leaned back, and waited for news of victory.

woah. I never thought of it that way.

“Order one hundred warriors to destroy the jeedai,”

hmmm. I don't think 100 warriors can kill all the Jedi.
Then again, maybe. After all, only the New Republic Jedi know how it is to fight a Yuuzhan Vong.

This is going really well. happy

He's still not sure how many Jedi are in the temple. It's more of a scouting mission than anything. peace
