Death by Bikini

Anakin wound his way through the maze of straw and skin huts that made up the Tusken camp, trying his best not to upset the temperamental natives. Tuskens were well known for their often violent mood swings, and he wasn’t looking for a fight. It was true that he was a guest in the village, but he was still an outsider in a place where outsiders were generally very unwelcome.

He glanced up, watching as Tatooine’s twin suns finally dipped below the horizon. Night had come to the Jundland wastes, and Anakin smiled as a large full moon took its rightful place in the sky above. He was glad the day had passed at last. Dealing with the heat from the planet’s twin suns was rough even when you had a cooling unit handy, and Tuskens didn’t believe in using such things. It made living among them more than a little uncomfortable for one such as him. Even short visits, as he hoped this would be, felt interminable.

Anakin wiped the sweat from his brow, pushing a lock of his damp hair back off his forehead in the process. A cool desert breeze swept through the encampment, and the young Jedi Knight smiled. Now if only Tahiri would hurry and get back, he thought.

The distant cry of a Bantha snapped Anakin out of his reverie. He walked to the edge of the camp, his eyes scanning the desert beyond the small oasis. After a few moments, he spotted a Bantha and its rider approaching at a steady, if slow, clip. It was Tahiri; he could feel her. She wasn’t alone, of course. After all, Tuskens always rode single file to hide their numbers.

Under the light of the full moon, the Tusken scouting party reentered the camp. Tahiri - attired in traditional Tusken dress - climbed down from her Bantha mount with practiced ease. It was, she thought, good to be back. Anakin was there to greet her, though he was careful not to be too public with his affections. Tuskens had very specific ideas when it came to relations between husbands and wives, and their concept of romance was, to say the least, a little limited.

“I’ve missed you,” Anakin whispered to her, standing close.

“Same here, Dummy,” Tahiri whispered back, handing the reigns of her Bantha off to another Raider.

“How’d it go?” Anakin asked, curious.

Tahiri shrugged noncommittally. “We found some Krayt Dragon tracks not too far off, so I think this will be the last night they camp here for a while. I think they’re overreacting a bit, but they have their ways.”

“Well, this is their home, so I guess they know what’s best,” Anakin responded reasonably.

“I lived here, too,” Tahiri pointed out.

Anakin looked abashed. “Right. Sorry.”

A tribal elder approached Tahiri, jabbering something Anakin, with his limited grasp of their native tongue, couldn’t decipher. Tahiri replied quickly, sparking a short exchange. The meaning behind the words was lost on Anakin though. Through the Force, he could sense it was nothing too serious, but that was all he could tell. When it was over, her attention shifted back to him.

“Everything okay?” he queried.

“Fine,” she assured him. “He just wanted me to know that a hut has been prepared for us to use during our stay.”

“Oh, that’s what that new hut is for,” he said slowly. “I would have helped, if I’d realized what they were doing while you were out,” he said, feeling somewhat guilty.

Beneath the sandshroud which covered her head to waist, Tahiri smiled. “C’mon, Dummy, let’s go investigate our hut,” she said, taking his hand in her carefully wrapped hand.

Anakin smiled. “Lead the way,” he urged.

The interior of the skin hut was lit by more than a dozen candles, and there was a small hole cut into the roof that allowed a bit of moonlight to shine in, as well. All in all, it was rather cozy.

“You know, for a species with their... reputation, this is a pretty romantic setup,” Anakin mused aloud. He plopped himself down amidst a mass of simple, handmade pillows and blankets.

Tahiri stood bathed in pale moonlight at the crux of the hut, her head tilted to one side. “Think so, Hero-boy?”

Anakin nodded as he rose briefly to remove his Jedi cloak. He sat back down, tossing his cloak aside. “Yep, though, if you don’t mind me saying, some of their customs do leave a little something to be desired, if you take my meaning.”

Tahiri’s posture straightened. “You know, Anakin, a husband and wife are not supposed to show their skin to one another at all, except on their wedding night.”

Anakin frowned. “This is going to be a short visit, right?” he asked hopefully.

With deliberate slowness, Tahiri began the task of unwrapping her bandaged hands and feet. “In fact, showing your skin is grounds for exile, even death,” she went on, ignoring Anakin’s question.

Anakin winced. “That seems a little harsh.”

“It’s their way,” she said simply as she finally freed her bare feet from their coverings.

Anakin finally noticed what Tahiri was doing. “Um, you sure you want to be doing that?” he asked nervously.

“You mind?” she gave him a sideways glance, a blonde eyebrow quirked.

“No-no, not at all,” he replied hastily, raising his arms in front of him in defense. “It’s just... well, we are guests here. And like you said: they have their ways. I mean, I doubt they could really hurts us if it came to a fight, but these are your people, sort of.”

“That’s true,” Tahiri conceded casually. “But I’ve been away for a very long time, Anakin, and I haven’t readjusted to the heat yet. I was out there in the desert baking under those suns all day, and I need to relax.”

Anakin briefly considered pushing the flap covering the doorway back to allow more air in, but thought better of it. The tribe made allowances for his dress, but probably wouldn’t do so for Tahiri, who’d been raised among them.

“It’s a lot cooler now that the suns have set,” he observed. Tahiri’s covered head shook. “Okay-okay, I guess I’m just being silly,” he admitted. “I just don’t want to be sent into exile, or killed,” he laughed.

“You wouldn’t risk it for me?” Tahiri queried seductively, pulling her sandshroud over her head and off.

Anakin’s eyes went round. “I...”

Tahiri grinned mischievously, then wriggled out of her heavy desert cloak. The homespun garment pooled at her feet, leaving her clad only in a itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny-yellow-polka-dot bikini. She slowly ran her hands over her scantily clad form.

“You’re right, Anakin, it is a little chilly now,” she purred.

Anakin gulped loudly, pulling at the neck of his tunic. “Actually, I’m feeling rather warm,” he said shakily.

Tahiri got down on all fours and crawled over to where Anakin sat. “Hmm, maybe you can share some of that warmth with me, then?” she suggested, barely brushing her lips against his.

“I’m so dead,” he lamented. Tahiri kissed him passionately. “What’s the penalty for...” He started to question her when they finally pulled apart.

Tahiri used one hand to shove Anakin onto his back. She raised herself up onto her knees, looking down at her husband. “Anakin.”

“Yeah?” he asked weakly. His eyes were still wide and his breathing was ragged.

A quirky smile tugged at her lips, and she lowered herself down to where he lay. Her palms resting on either side of his shoulders and face looming just millimeters above his, she said, “You talk too much.”

Anakin grinned as Tahiri kissed him, wrapping his arms around her. Tomorrow they might both find themselves on the wrong end of a Gaffi stick, but at least they would die happy, thanks to an itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny-yellow-polka-dot bikini.

THE END.

Brilliant! I particularly like the way you balanced the wider, deeper characterization with the very funky narrative of the story itself - a simple line like Tahiri's “You talk too much.” means so much to A/T...
