Destiny's Retribution

Chapter 1: Hated Memory

Jagged Fel stared out the veiwport of his ship, the Goddess’s Champion, into the pearly expanse of hyperspace and mourned for the three thousandth, six hundredth and fiftieth straight day of his life. It was ten years to this day that his wife, his soul mate, his goddess, his Jaina had died.

No. She was not dead. She had not died. She was merely missing. She was out there, somewhere. And he was waiting for her to come back to him.

<><><>flashback<><><>
“Uncle! What a nice surprise—what’s wrong?” Jag asked in reaction to Wedge Antilles’ grim face.

“Jag, I’m sorry to be the one to bring you this bad news, buy I feel it’s my responsibility—”

“What’s happened to Jaina, Uncle?” Jag cut him off, not wanting to hear the news that he knew was coming. His worst fears were confirmed when he was Wedge blow out his breath, finally allowing the sorrow he felt in his heart creep into his face.

“I’m sorry, Jag—”

“Sithspit! General, tell me what’s wrong,” snapped Jag, reverting back to military terms, back into his element.

“She’s dead, Jag.” Wedge said simply.

“No” said Jag, not wanting to believe wanting to believe, “No! That’s not possible! She only went out to get some repairs done in her ship! She couldn’t be d-dd-dead!” He struggled to say his last word.

“Twin Suns was called out to take care of a squadron of rouge Vong above Dagobah. She was shot down. Her X-wing was last seen heading planetside. There were no signs of life in it.”

“No…that can’t be true!” Jag screamed at the comm unit, his shout echoing in the apartment he and Jaina had shared in the Jedi Temple since their first day as man and wife.

“Jag, I’m sorry, I know this is news nobody would ever want to hear. I just thought I should be the one to tell you.” Wedge said in the familiar tone of his uncle-to-nephew voice. “Let me know if you need any help from me. Or Iella for the matter.”

“Thank you General. Good bye.” Jag ended the comm connection, releasing his emotions on the comm unit. His tone was cold, and unrevealing, not betraying what he felt underneath his icy interior.

Suddenly, a thought struck Jag. It was something he had to know. With shaking hands he dialed the code for his uncle’s office. General Antilles’ secretary droid answered.

“General Antilles’ office, Starfighter Command. Please state squadron name and flight number please.”

“Rouge Squadron, Rouge Leader” Jag responded, as if on autopilot. He had to speak to his uncle.

“Please wait.” The droid dutifully responded. “Welcome Colonel Jagged Fel. Thank you for calling. Please wait while I transfer you to General Antilles’ personal comm station.” When the droid put him on hold, holographic images of various Ewoks at play and bowing and serving a certain Wes Janson. Jag shook his head. Another one of Wes’ jokes. Jag thought wryly. He wondered if Jaina had ever seen this spectacle. She would have liked this. She always did like seeing Wes’ pranks on Wedge. Sighing, Jag shook his head. What am I doing? I’m thinking as if she’s gone. Of course she alright. And she will come back to me.

Wedge’s face appeared in front of Jag. Jag bypassed the pleasantries and got right down to the power cables. “Uncle, why did you send Twin Suns? You don’t normally send them out for such menial tasks. Besides, the Rouges are on patrol. You should have sent them out. I would be there, but with this headache I can’t focus on anything.”

Wedge sighed. “Jag, I was going to send the Rouges out but Jaina insisted on letting the Twin Suns go. She said you were asleep and she didn’t want to wake you up.” Wedge sighed again, knowing what Jag was thinking, another person I love died because of me. “I know how you don’t want to hear it Jag, but I can’t tell you enough times just how sorry I am.” Sorry I sent the loved one of someone to their death yet again, were his unsaid words. “A search party has already been sent out, but they’ve already reported back that they didn’t find anything and that they all felt her death.”

“Who was in the search party?” Jag queried.

Another sigh.

“Who was in it?!? Jag demanded.

“Both the Masters Skywalker, Master Durron, Knights Leia Organa Solo, Knight Jacen Solo, Master Horn, Knight Veila and many of their non-Jedi counterparts.”

“Why was I not called?”

“I did call you Jag, but I believe you were asleep, and it was imperative that the search party leave as soon as possible, and Jaina has said you had a headache and that you were asleep, so I let you be.”

“And you just now call me again?”

Jag earned himself another sigh. “Jagged, I’ve been calling you every five minutes for the past two hours.”

“Oh.”

Wedge looked off at an unseen speaker. “Listen Jag, Tycho is calling me. I have to go. Could you come over to my quarters tonight for dinner? Iella’s making Corellian.”

Jag himself now sighed. “That you Uncle, but I have to decline. I think I’m going to spend the night by myself.

“Alright Jag, but if you need anything, feel free to call me.”

“Yes sir. I mean Wedge.”

“Good bye Jagged.” Wedge said.

“Uncle! Wait. Please. There is something I must know.” Jag whispered in a quiet voice.

“Yes Jag?”

“How many casualties did Twin Sins sustain?” Jaina would never willing send her pilots into a battle they couldn’t handle—or so he hoped.

“Just one, Jag. Her. Just one. I’m so sorry Jag, but I must be going.” Wedge said, knowing he couldn’t sugar coat anything for Jag.

“Okay Uncle,. Good bye.” Jag killed the connection before Wedge could respond.

Feeling he couldn’t contain everything he felt inside of him, Jag went into the refresher and threw up. Not feeling any better, he stumbles out of the ‘fresher toward the desk he and Jaina shared. Pulling open a top drawer, he reverently pulled out the stack of papers he and Jaina had invested so much hope in. Grabbing the first stylist he was, he crossed out the name in “Chosen Name” on the adoption papers and changed Melody Fel to Jaina Fel. He would make sure that his goddess lived on with him.

And with that, He sat down on their bed and succumbed to his tears.

Thoughts anyone???

and a shout out to my beautiful beta Madame_Solo! thanks a ton!
not to mention my other beta who dropped off the face of the earth, skywalkerlover00. I miss you Lolly! cry

edit: if you hadn't noticed, Wedge didn't retire after TUF. Neither did Tycho.

And Luke didn't rebuild the Jedi Temple on Ossus. It's on Coruscant.

edit: in this, many things will happen that are not really possible--even in the SW universe. my only sxplanation is the. will. of. the. Force. grin

Rogue leader??!! shock

well, this has definite promise. i know you asked for constructive criticism, but there isn't much i can say. maybe a little more description, but that may just be me: i love descriptions. oh, the one thing that stuck in my head was how they addressed each other so formally. To me, Wedge would call Luke Luke, not Master Skywalker, and Jag would call Wedge Wedge, not General. Again, just me. happy

umm...*thinks hard* the only other thing i could mention was to go a little more in depth with things, more of what they're thinking. other than that, great job CC! applause

i love that he named the baby Jaina, very sweet. you got Lelila from the Crystal Star didn't you? I remember that scene. and i love the title.

well, like i said, just a little more depth to things, and other than that you're doing great! I'll be looking forward to the rest!

i'll work on the depth, i do have a probelem with that...cuz if i put in their thoughts, they end up being way out of character sad

yeah, i got Lelila from the crystal star. i'm horrible with names, so almost everyone ends up being named after someone... grin

New Posty!

note: if Jag seems out of character, it'll all be explained a while from now. now he doesn't than it's all good. grin

Chapter 2: Daddy and Uncle Jasa return home.

Jag sighed as the vivid memory assaulted his mind. Great Fel. Just great, he thought. Go ahead and get yourself all depressed. Alright. Deep breaths. Let’s try to think of a happy thought…

<><><>flashback<><><>

“I don’t know Jace, what of she doesn’t like me?” asked a nervous Jagged Fel as his brother-in-law, Jacen Solo, pushed him by the shoulders in to the Galactic Alliance Adoption Center on the rebuilt Coruscant. Jag had looked forward to this day for so long, that now that it had come, he was apprehensive.

“Jag, I can tell you several reasons why she wouldn’t not like you.” Jacen responded to his roommate. One, she’s two months old, so you will have plenty of time to get her adapted to the Colonel Killjoy that you are—”

“I will not kill any of her so called joy! Unless of course you or Kyp or your father are the cause of it…” Jag protested.

Anyway, number two, even if she doesn’t like you, she’ll just run to Uncle Jasa, and since I live with you, she’s stuck with you. And third,” Jacen paused dramatically, “Come on Bro,” he said, continuing flippantly, “her name’s Jaina. How can she help but love you?”

Jag laughed, and heard Jacen’s chuckling join his, but both of their laughter died as they trailed off in thought.

Jaina. It had been a month since she had died. No, not died Jag thought, she has just disappeared. Jag had gone down to Dagobah and raked through the entire planet for come sign of Jaina or her ship, but found nothing. So, with a heavy heart, he headed back to Coruscant, accepted Jacen and Kyp’s offer to room with them, (which was more of a demand then an offer) with the insistence that they move in with him), and began to finalize the plans for adopting the child that he and Jaina had dreamed about. Now, on the day when he was going to become a father, he wasn’t sure if he was ready. In fact, he wondered that without Jaina, if he would ever be ready.

After the silence grew awkward, Jacen finally spoke up, “So what are you going to name you new squadron?”

“I don’t know…I don’t think I should name it anything along the lines of The Goddess’s, lest it offend any Yuuzhan Vong, so I have nothing.” Jag smiled, “Maybe we should have the pilots play for it. Sabacc. Last one standing names the squadron.”

“Hey, I like that. You realize that Kyp and I would have the advantage, right? How do you plan to beat two Jedi?” Jacen responded.

Jag shrugged. “Then I hope you have a good name in mind.”

During the entire conversation they were walking, and so they quickly reached their destination. As they stood in the hall, staring though a veiwport, they saw an attendant holding a bawling girl, trying to console her.

Jacen quipped, “I’ve got a thousand credits that says she’s yours.”

Jag smiled wryly. “I agree. No bet.”

Slowly, tentatively, they walked into the nursery and began looking for the bassinet marked Jaina Fel. Consequently, Jag was the one to find it, and sure enough, the small bed was vacant, while the child was in the arms of the poor social worker, who was trying to calm her down with no luck.

Somewhat apprehensive and giddy at the same time, Jag walked up to the struggling nurse and spoke “Excuse me, my name is Jagged Fel. I’m adopting this girl. May I?” he asked, holding out his arms.

The young nurse smiles, “Why not?” She said exasperatedly, “she doesn’t seem to like me.” Gently, she placed the child in Jag’s arms. Instantly, the infant’s crying stopped. Jag found himself grinning from ear to ear.

Jacen walked up behind Jag and put his hand on his roommate’s shoulder. “I think she likes you, bro. I think she likes you.”

Jag looked over his shoulder at Jacen. “I hope your right Jace.” He raised his new daughter’s face until their noses were almost touching. “Hello there Jaina, I’m your new daddy. We’re going to have a lot of fun, you and me.”

“And Kyp and I are going spoil you rotten!” Jacen piped in.

Jag laughed. “Yeah, that too.” He looked at Jacen. “You want to hold her?” he asked.

Jacen positively beamed. “I’d love to.” He reached to take Jaina, but when he touched her, he drew back, as thought he had been burned, his eyes wide. “Holy Kriffing Force Fel!”

“What now?” Jag demanded. “What’s wrong?”

Jacen threw back his head and laughed. Then he took Jaina from Jag’s arms and started making funny faces at her.

What in all the Corellian hells is up Solo? Jag screamed, sending every infant in the room into a collective tantrum. What could possibly be wrong with the child?

His brother-in-law looked at him with tears in his eyes from laughter. “Take it for what you will Jag, but out of all these kids,” he gestured around him, “you got the one Force-sensitive one!”

Jag felt his face go white. “F-ff-Force sensitive? Are you sure? I mean is—what I’m trying to say is,” he stuttered, “Really?”

“I can’t be certain, but I’m fairly sure. Uncle Luke would know.” Jacen replied calmly.

“Okay then, let’s bust out of here.”

<><><>end flashback<><><>

Jag was pulled out of his daze by a voice, “Hey Jag? You want me to take us down? You seem a little out of it.”

“Huh? What? Um, us, sure, yeah, that’s fine.” Jag responded, not quite sure what he was asked.

Jacen Solo smirked and turned his focus to the Champion’s controls. After they landed, and the boarding ramp was deployed, Jacen clapped his hand on Jag’s shoulder. “Welcome back to Borleias, Bro.”

“Thanks.” Jag answered, on autopilot. Every year, no matter what he was doing or where in the galaxy he was, on the anniversary of Jaina Solo Fel’s disappearance, he would come on a sort of pilgrimage to Borleias, where they their love had first bloomed. Sometimes it was just to have lunch or go shopping for his daughter, but more often that not, he would go to the old ruined biotic faculty and sit in the tiny conference room where he and Jaina had shared their first kiss. He could sit there for hours, just thinking, reliving all their memories together, remembering her as she appeared in his mind’s eye. The silky feel of her hair, her musical laughter, the way every curve of her body would melt into his. The phantom feel of her lips against his, her arms around his neck, holding on as if for dear life.

But today was different. Today was the first time he had ever allowed anyone to accompany him to his journey into his past. The only reason he had agreed for Jacen to come with him was because Jag knew he would understand and because Borleias was on their way back from a somewhat successful mission on Felucia. Today, he decided, would not be a day for his usual silent contemplation he had come to appreciate.

“Okay, Jace, do you want to get something to eat? I know this great place near the Empress Teta Gardens.”

“That sounds great. I got to make sure I get Jay-Jay something before we leave though; it has to be better than your gift too. Operation No Krakana is underway,” replied Jacen with a smirk.

“Hey! She’s my daughter, in theory, she should like me better.”

“You keep telling yourself that Fel. In theory, not always in practice, Colonel Killjoy.” Jacen said with a mock salute.

“Whatever.” Jag said, rolling his eyes, a very Rebel gesture.

After a filling lunch, the two roommates went shopping. After a bit of arguing, they called a truce and agreed to a green and yellow astromech. Soon after, they were back in the Goddess’s Champion headed to Coruscant to the new Starfighter Command faculties and the neighboring Jedi Temple.

<><><><><>

As Jacen and Jag landed in the hanger bay of the Jedi Temple, they say a tall cloaked figure standing alone with the exception of a child who was sitting atop his shoulders. Grinning, the two men put the ship through its shutdown sequence and started down the boarding ramp. They were halfway down the ream when a ten year old blur hit Jag at his midsection, sending him back into Jacen, who had been following him down, causing them all to end up in a tangled heap of arms and legs.

“Welcome home Daddy! Welcome home Uncle Jasa! Now would you please get off me?” A small voice called from beneath the two large men.

“In a minute sweetie, we’re still trying t figure out whose arms are whose.” Jacen’s muffled voice said from beneath Jag’s rear. “Fel! Get your butt off of me!”

“Here, let me help.” The voice replied. The two men felt their bodies start to rise off the floor, their forms gaining speed.

“Jaina! Nooooo!” Both men yelled in unison, but it was too late. They were flung from the ramp and ended up sprawled across various ships in the hanger, Jag on the Millennium Falcon and Jacen on the Jade Shadow, several meters off the ground, but nonetheless separated from each other.

Meanwhile, Jaina Fel stared up at the cloaked figure walking up to her. “Uh-oh,” she said, getting up and dusting herself off.

“Jaina Fel, you should be ashamed of yourself.” Kyp Durron said. “Master Skywalker would not approve of you using the Force for such a trivial task as getting your father and uncle off of you. But considering the results of you actions,” his green eyes twinkled with amusement, “I won’t be reporting your deeds to Master Skywalker and I can tell you that you did—”

“Fel!/Solo! Get off my ship!” Kyp winced as he turned and saw to whom the two voices that had called out at precisely the same time belonged to. By themselves, Han Solo and Mara Jade Skywalker were formidable people, but teamed together and fired up about their ships—that was something Kyp Durron wouldn’t wish upon anyone.

“Uh, yes sir/ma’am!” Said Jacen and Jag, hurrying to clamber off the ships they were on.

As soon as they were off, Han and Mara’s expression softened. “Welcome home.” Mara said, enfolding her nephew and niece’s husband into a hug. Han expressed his similar sentiments with a pat on the back and a big wampa hug.

“Thanks,” Jag said. “I’d love catch up with you guys, but Jacen and I need to report to General Antilles. We’ll catch up with you later. Come one Jacen.” He nodded toward the turbolift. “Kyp can you watch Jaina until we get back?” he asked the green-eyed Jedi Master.

“Sure, I’d love to. Maybe we can go sparring.” Kyp answered with a wink at the young girl.

“Okay, but I’m not going to take it easy on you!” Jaina retorted. Even though she was adopted she looked and acted amazingly like her namesake. Same golden brown eyes, same light brown hair, same Solo smirk. But of all these traits, she carried herself with confidence, pride and with the same wicked humor as her “mother” and “grandmother.”

She turned to he father. “Bye Daddy! See you later!” She stood on her toes as Jag leaned down and gave him a kiss on the cheek. Then she grabbed Kyp’s hand and ran out the hanger, dragging the poor Kyp Durron, struggling to remain looking dignified as he was led away by a ten year old.

Jag watched the retreating pair and then turned to Jacen. “Let’s go.”
