All right, after nine months of hiatus, for the few of you that might be interested...it's the next post

Chapter 6 Part II “Surprising, hidden, and otherwise unpleasant truths.”

Coruscant, The Grand City Hotel, 334th Floor, Penthouse Suite Observation Lounge, 1756 hours, CMT

Leia sighed as the doors from the Observation Lounge to the rest of the Penthouse slid shut behind her second cousin, Cordé Naberrie, and the youngest son of the Protector of Kalinda.

That was strange…interesting, but strange…She dodged every question about my mother or her life on Naboo after the Clone Wars started. Though, she did tell me that my Aunt Sola or one of her daughters might have a more information…So, odd.

The voice of Leia’s new friend, Laecilla, interrupted her thoughts.

“So, what do you think of the newest hopelessly in love Naboo – Kalinadian couple?”

Not quite knowing what to say, Leia paused and just looked at Laecilla quizzically.

“You can’t tell me that you didn’t notice?” Laecilla asked with a growing, if disbelieving grin.

“Honestly, I didn’t notice much beyond her attempts to avoid answering my questions. Though I did pick up a vague sense of annoyance.”

With a knowing look to accompany the grin, Laecilla observed, “Well, that’s because Cordé was annoyed. Both of them were. They didn’t expect to find us here.”

Laecilla paused as Leia’s face colored slightly in understanding.

“But,” Leia interjected, “if they wanted to be alone, then why go to the trouble of concocting a story that he came to see you?”

“Why do you think?”

“Laecilla, it’s not nice to answer a question with a question.”

“You’re right, Leia, it isn’t polite. Yet, I would think that their reason would be obvious. They want, or rather, are trying to keep the relationship hidden from certain people.”

“From their respective fathers, perhaps?” Leia suggested.

Laecilla smiled a broad, open smile, chuckled softly, and said, “Bravo, you are your mother’s daughter. My Mother and Aunt have always told me that few people could draw correct conclusions from limited information as she could.”

In that moment, Leia did not know whether she should laugh or cry. Here was another hinted tidbit of information about her mother, and it was only available with reference to a teenaged romance.

Laecilla’s voice intruded into Leia’s growing melancholy, “Of course, they are both taking this far too seriously. My Aunt assuredly knows what her son feels for Cordé, and she will make sure that my Uncle accepts it. Family is much too important and revered a concept among the Kalinadians for him to do much else. Her father will not interfere, even if he does hate the Kalinadians. He loves his only daughter too much.”

As Leia listened to this brief exposition of why fears of parental reaction to potential mates were overblown, she felt a sharp stab of wonder: What would Mother or Bail have thought of Han…what would Vad..Anakin have thought of him?

The Gardens, Castle of Dunlindia, Duchy Of Dunlind, Kalinda, 1038 hrs.

Ivo sat on the bench in what he and his bride had taken to referring to as ‘Padmé’s Grove,’ and slowly expelled the breath that he had deeply sucked in only moments before. Centered once again, he asked his wife, “Dormé, are you telling me that you think that he has already proposed to her?”

His wife silently tilted looked toward her husband, raised her eyebrows slightly, and said, “Yes and no. I think that they have probably reached a point where each knows how the question will be answered, even if it hasn’t been asked yet.”

“And you base that on…”

Dormé laughed. “Oh, Ivo, sometimes you surprise me…Bren would have told Anlwée who would have told his wife, and she would have told Drinie in one of their conversations about how excited Drinie is to be becoming an Aunt. Of course, Drinie would have told me, because, well, she just can’t keep a secret.”

“My dearest one,” Ivo began as he looked up toward the Castle, “you should have been a spy.”

“Well, my Father was one…remember?” As the self-deprecating joke drew no response from Ivo, Dormé followed his gaze up to the bulk of the Castle. Without knowing why she shivered slightly, and moved closer to him. Following years of practice, she slipped into Basic, “What’s wrong my love?”

“Korva’s here. He wasn’t supposed to be here until lunch. Something odd is going on…”

As his voice trailed off, Ivo rose from the bench. Without turning, he quietly said to his wife, “I’m sorry, but I think that I should check on this. Please feel free to stay here.”

“Meet me in the music room when your done, Dearest Darling, I’ve been working on something that I want you to hear.”

Distractedly, and ignoring the very loud, innuendo laced thoughts of his wife, Ivo merely nodded and began to walk toward the Castle.

Dormé looked at his retreating back. Raising an eyebrow, she thought, If that didn’t even rate a reaction, something more than odd is going on, I’ll wait twenty minutes and go to the Library. He’ll know what is going on by then.

The Corellian Consulate, Private Waiting Room, Coruscant, 1807 hrs.

Luke realized that he and Kampher Canaille had been sitting in silence for almost five minutes. It had been provoked by the one question that she had asked about Endor and by Luke’s answer. She’d simple asked, “He came back?” Luke had responded, “Yes, when I needed him the most.”

As the silence continued, Luke began to feel uncomfortable. He had still not been able to form a word when Kam’s voice finally filled the silence.

“Well, Master Skywalker, I have kept you long enough. I am sure that you have better things to do with your time than listen to an aging woman reminisce about times long gone.”

Luke smiled, “Kam, nothing could be further from the truth…you have told me so much that I didn’t know about my father. Though I would say that I have not earned the title Master in any sense…”

“Nonsense, Luke, you are the founding member of the Jedi Order reborn - an order built with understanding of both the Force and individuals. You have suffered a trial of fire that few could have survived. You are as strong a Master as any I ever met as a Padawan.”

Rather than respond, Luke looked at the ground and began to blush. When he looked up, he saw that Kam was smiling. Then, she said something that Luke truly didn’t expect.

“Oh, and I understand that you know my daughter, Aubé. She asked me to say hello to you. She also told me that you had asked her to go to Kalinda with you in furtherance of the Protectrix’s invitation.”

“Nails...Nails is your daughter?” Luke asked in a strange tone, half shocked and half embarrassed.

“Well, I am given to understand that she used that sobriquet as a call sign flying strike fighters. I am more interested in why you asked her to go with you.”

Kam’s voice had been understanding and reasonable. Luke was at something of a loss. There was a very simple reason for this feeling: he was not sure why he had asked Nails to go to Kalinda. It was a feeling, a hunch; the will of the Force, perhaps.

Well, I owe her the truth… “I don’t really know. It just seemed the thing to do at the time.”

Kam smiled and said, “The Force does its work in mysterious ways.”

The Protector’s Study, The Castle of Dunlindia, Duchy of Dunlind, Kalinda, 1105hrs.

Ivo sat looking from one uniformed man to the other.

When he had reached the Castle Offices on the lower level of the South Wing, he had been informed that not only Lieutenant-General of the Realm Arlotra, but Minister of Internal Security Ardeltras was waiting to see him. He had quietly told the Command Duty Officer to have both of them brought up to the study off of the Library. There, he had listened to two reports of military actions that had taken place within the last several hours.

The one from the green-uniformed Korva Arlotra, he had expected. The main force elements of Rear Admiral Artot’s Core-Trailing Patrol Group had landed troops on Toskal, and decisively intervened to restore that world’s lawful government. That, as part of executing their mission, they had mauled a small New Republic naval force was not all that surprising either. The only issue now was how the Republic would react, and how many casualties Commonwealth Forces would take before restoring order at Toskal.

The other event, caught Ivo entirely by surprise. In fact, he was dumbfounded. Slowly, with a great effort to be exquisitely clear, he said to the tall, hawk-faced man in the black, tailed dress uniform, “Are you saying, Minister that the Archonate sent a force into the city of Beltrasia without informing either your Ministry or the Count of Beltras or the Southeast Coast Administration?”

“Correct, My Lord,” replied the man in his annoyingly nasal voice.

“They then fought a skirmish with someone that left half a building gutted, and at least a dozen bodies were observed at the scene?”

“Yes, My Lord.”

“And to top it off, the Archonate troops removed the bodies and other evidence, and have refused to discuss the matter with anyone?”

“Yes, My Lord, that is essentially correct, but I can add one other bit of information. A civilian reported to the Constabulary, when it arrived, that he had seen two of the Order of Delsardis leading the raid.”

“Witch Hunters?” Ivo asked with a tone of incredulity creeping into his voice.

“Well, My Lord, that is how they are referred to colloquially.” Minster Ardeltras said, dryly.

Witch Hunters…Why Witch Hunters? There haven’t been any issues that I am aware of that would draw them out. Certainly nothing that would draw them out as far as raiding a location with a force of Archonate troops…But shouldn’t there have been Inquisitors with them? They’d be almost more obvious than the Witch Hunters.

“Minister,” Ivo began in a calm measured tone, “Where there any Inquisitors seen by this civilian?”

“None noted in the report, My Lord.”

Ivo sighed. That meant that he’d have to talk to his sister about this. His sister, Alania, the Countess Siladon, wife of Gentian Count Artoras of Siladon, and Exarch of Ardarza, Lord of Law and War, patron of the Inquisitors who kept the Church pure. After a moment, Ivo spoke again.

“Very well, Minister. Please keep track of the comings and goings of the Archonate’s troops for the time being, and inform me should anything of interest happen.”

Sensing his dismissal, the Minister bowed at the shoulders and walked out of the study and into the Library.

As he watched the Minister go, Ivo spoke, “Korva?”

“Yes, Ivo.”

“I take it the Navy is working up plans to create a battle force to meet any Coruscanti attempts to retake Toskal or retaliate for our assault without harming our defenses anywhere else.”

“Yes, Ivo, but if the Republic decides to start a general war with us over…”

“I know what you’re going to say Korva,” Ivo interrupted. “But unless that happens, I do not wish to do anything that interferes with our redeployment out of what was Hapan space. The Free Hapan League will be an excellent ally and base for operations on that side of the MidRim, but we cannot be bogged down there much longer. We’ll need freedom of action to meet either the Republic or the Empire in a total war, and we don’t have that if we have 5 fleets and 750,000 troops spread around the former Hapan Consortium as a garrison force.”

“You know Genty will scream.” Korva said a bemused tone creeping into his voice.

“Yes, my brother-in-law the Viceroy of Hapes will scream, just like he did when we let the Imperials that wanted to leave return to the Empire. He didn’t even care that we kept all their equipment, and that he was able to equip the Army of the Free Hapan League. He is just convinced that he is being set up to fail for some reason. Worse, he thinks that I’m doing it.”

“Well, Ivo, you know where that comes from…”

Ivo looked up at Korva, eyes narrowed. Then, his voice rising, he snapped, “Yes, I know that it comes my sister who still thinks that I should have made her husband Chief of Staff of the Army or Commander-in-Chief of the Cholongan Establishment. Which reminds me, please signal my sister’s Chief of Staff that I need to see her, here as soon as possible.”

Korva discreetly raised an eyebrow, and said, “Of course, Ivo, but should I give any reason?”

“Tell her religious enlightenment.”

With a smirk, Korva simply replied, “As it is said, it is done.”

Destris, Republic Naval Base, Home Port of Republic Colonies (Rim/Trailing) Squadron

As Gesdon Selt’s A-Wing transitioned back to normal space near the outer traffic Markers for Destris, he immediately began broadcasting signals to the Ship Guard for assistance. Gliding inward toward the base, his remaining engine finally died from the wounds inflicted by a Kalinadian fighter’s laser cannon.

Well, that’s it. All I can do know is wait and watch. Though, according to the navigational computer, I’ll make the inner marker in just three weeks at this velocity.

Shortly after his engine died, Ship Guard contacted him to say that a cutter was heading out to pick him up and to tow his fighter in to the base. It was only after he had crawled through the transfer tube to the modified Corellian light freighter that served as a Ship Guard cutter that he realized how on edge everyone seemed.

Looking at the medic checking his vitals, he asked, “What’s gotten under everyone’s skin?”

The medic, who seemed only in his teens, replied, “The base is on high alert. We expect a Kalinadian attack. The system defense fighters are patrolling the large ship insertion points, and all the planetary defenses for the base are up and running.”

Selt listened somewhat surprised at the level of controlled panic underneath the young medic’s words. Maybe they know something that I don’t…

In an interested, but not urgent tone, Selt asked, “Have the Kalinadians struck anywhere but Toskal?”

“No, but wasn’t what they did to Freehold enough?” The medic’s tone was irritated, with more than a little fear poking through the cloud of irritation. Selt decided to try a different tack.

“So, how bad was the damage to Freehold? She left Toskal in a hurry…didn’t even try to recover her fighters.” Selt was inwardly pleased that his bitterness didn’t sound too clearly through his voice.

“Well,” replied the Medic, “I’m not an engineer, but I do know that over a hundred of her crew was killed or wounded, including the Captain and most of the command crew. I heard that the bridge took a direct hit. The ship is being towed to the yards, but I bet that she doesn’t leave anytime soon. Anyway, the Base Commander has requested reinforcements and expects a Kalinadian attack to secure their flank…at least that’s the scuttlebutt in the Medical wing.”

Selt simply sat there. He knew as a combat veteran that the Kalinadians would need more time than the few hours he’d spent in hyperspace to secure Toskal, and that an attack, beyond a probing raid was unlikely. He also knew that the last area update he’d received indicated that there would be little to reinforce them available for some weeks. It all seemed surreal to him. Yeah, but I should try to calm this kid down.

“Kid, if the Kalinadians aren’t here yet, they’re not coming anytime soon.”

“You really think so, Lieutenant?” The medic sounded at once disbelieving and hopeful.

“Yeah, yeah, I do.” Selt said with a smile.

The Quarters of Master Skywalker, 500 Republica, Coruscant, 1837 hrs

Barriss Offee stood silently, her cowl still over her head, as she waited with the Kalinadian Constable for the return of ‘Count Vader.’ The blue and white R2 unit that had allowed them to enter as far as the reception area seemed familiar in some way. This troubled her. To break herself away from this problem, she began to focus on the room. It was plain. She approved of this. It spoke well of the Jedi in him.

It then struck her that the black uniformed Kalinadian waiting with her had seemingly no reaction to the room or the droid. He was clearly bored, and one did not need to touch the Force to know it. She was almost surprised.

Then, something unusual happened. The Force brightened in Barriss’s perception. It reminded her of being in the presence of a Master Yoda or Windu. For a moment, she immersed herself in the feeling. Then, she heard the droid whistling and beeping. The sense, but not the sound, of a voice answering the droid flitted across her consciousness. Before she could explore this further, one of the doors to the room hissed open. She looked toward it.

He was blond and short, at least, shorter than Anakin had been, but he had those so familiar blue eyes. He wore a blue-black uniform of typical Republic style and cut. He carried a light saber. More important than any of this, he shone in Force as brightly as any Jedi Master, or Kalinadian God-touched that she had ever met. Her reverie was interrupted by the Kalinadian next to her.

“My Lord Vader, I am Constable Lieutenant Erizhan Arhantia. I have been asked to bring to you a letter of introduction from the Protector and the individual next to me.” Barriss watched Arhantia hold out the datapad to the young man, who took it from him.

Before this son of Anakin Skywalker could answer, the Kalinadian continued.

“Milord, as you are now the apparent Master General of your Order, I present to you Barriss Offee, Jedi Knight, released from Kalinda on her parole at the mercy of the Lord Protector.”

Not quite knowing what to do, Barriss lowered her cowl, and stared into the shocked blue eyes of Anakin Skywalker’s son. She smiled at the thought that came unbidden.

Anakin’s son leading the Order, I would love to see the old Masters’ reaction to that.

Well of course I want to be on the PM list!

Reading this new post is like slipping into a warm familiar bath, and equally enjoyable.

You must have a concordance to keep track of Ivo's (extended) family tree! - It's so rich and far reaching... and always so true to the wonderful characters.

Speaking of characters...

“Nails...Nails is your daughter?” Luke asked in a strange tone, half shocked and half embarrassed.

And

Well, I owe her the truth… “I don’t really know. It just seemed the thing to do at the time.”

shock mischief laugh

*giggles* why does the word 'Busted' complete with bad sit com *whooooooooo!* come to mind? Gentle teasing to the author aside (since in no way am I comparing this lovely work to bad tv) I adore seeing my characters so lovingly slid into this work -

Ahh, Luke does have that effect on people, doesn't he?

Well, thank you for a much needed and welcome return! Don't keep us on tenterhooks waiting for the next post!

Re-reading the post before this was very helpful. I'm glad to return to Kalinda and look forward to the continuing story.

Are you saying, Minister that the Archonate sent a force into the city of Beltrasia without informing either your Ministry or the Count of Beltras or the Southeast Coast Administration

So the church has forces it deploys at will... and Ivo is content to learn of its actions only after they have occurred?

Between his children, sister, and the church Ivo seems to be having a rough afternoon.

Not quite knowing what to do, Barriss lowered her cowl, and stared into the shocked blue eyes of Anakin Skywalker’s son. She smiled at the thought that came unbidden.

Did Luke know of her existence? Did the empire know she was on Kalinda?

I enjoyed the post and await the next. You have an amazingly detailed backstory for your universe. The extra background information helps, but then I might follow the intricacies of the story just as well when it is complete. Write quickly.

Ah...

The Plot Thickens...

Breezy mentioned that this was like having a warm familiar bath. I compare it to slipping into a well-worn robe and sitting next to the fire after a day out in the snow.

Comforting and enigmatic at once, with a sense of controlled danger as one stares at the flames leaping about the logs.

I am so glad the Ivoverse is back and kicking. I think that we're not short of surprises quite yet.

I especially liked the exchange between Ivo and Korva. I could almost see The Bale with a mix of Bruce Wayne deadpan humour and upper-crust British hauteur. As for Korva, well, The Butler comes to mind as a cross between snickering Terry Sheridan and master strategist Leonidas...

And that last line. Absolutely priceless.

Methinks Yoda would fight a smile even as he let out a very non-commital "mmphm". And that Mace would be properly scandalised and chastened.

The Force does work in mysterious ways sometimes... "Always in motion, the future is."

Cheers,

Lauré happy

As happy as I am that Barriss is alive and in this fic, I'm sitting here wondering what did she do to get arrested. Otherwise, I'm just excited this is back. Every time I read a chapter I am always left wanting more, wanting the characters to give us more. I think Luke and Leia's visit just got more complicated. With the recent skirmish between Kalinda and the New Republic, it seems the twins will be thrown right in the middle. Interesting times ahead.

Yes, it's time for replies...

First, however, I must again thank DarthBreezy for her kind permission to continue to use her OCs (Kam and Aube ['Nails']). If you want to read more about them, Please see the Stories in Breezy's Bio.

DarthBreezy: Well, thank you for being glad that it's back. wink

As to your OCs, it is very easy to slip real, well drawn people into my work. It's the kind of hacked-up ones that I have a problem with...say like Luke on some levels, he's damned hard to write.

Speaking of Luke, he does have an effect on people, particularly people who knew his father. Yet, on some level, they see only what they expect to see. It will be interesting to see how people who knew both is parents may react...

Oh, and I do have a chart with Ivo's family tree deliniated.

Sophronia: Yes, Ivo is having a rough afternoon.

Yes, the Archonate has its own troops (about a division and a half's worth), and no Ivo is not, as you will soon learn content with finding out about such things after the fact.

As to Barriss Offee...No, Luke had no idea that she existed. As far as he knows, she's a fraud. The Empire...Yes, the Empire absolutely knew that she was a POW on Kalinda, and allowed it as part of its 'works on its own terms' relationship with the Commonwealth.

laurethiel1138: Thanks for reading, and yes, the future is always in Motion. An important point for several characters in this work.

I know, enigmatic, but it should all start to make sense soon.

ThatJediscum: Yes, Luke and Leia's visit just got much more complicated.

As for Barriss, she was a POW from the last days of the Ivoverse's version of the Jedi Purge. Here, the last acts of the Clone Wars/the Jedi Rebellion/The Civil War with the Jedi. She was captured on Ando, after being severely wounded in single lightsaber combat with Ivo. He placed her under his protection, had her wounds treated, and then kept her confined to Kalinda. Yet, he allowed her to practice as a healer. As mentioned before, nearly twenty-five years amongst the Kalinadians, and she still doesn't understand them.

More shortly...

This is what I get for not checking in on these Boards very often. I miss stuff!

I’d just like to say that I’m THRILLED to see the Ivoverse back in action. I hope Darth Writer’s Block has been suitably chastened and will not see fit to cause any more long hiat… wait … what’s the plural of ‘hiatus’? I know… breaks!...

I’m glad this new post touches on a number of different characters. I, too, had to re-read a bit to remind myself where we were. Then I remembered – Ivo is doing what he does best: thinking on his feet, leading masterfully, and always staying on top of the situation. I love Ivo!

I love how you always include little asides like this that keep us grounded in the GFFA and in beloved characters. I really feel for Leia. And referring to Luke as “Count Vader” gives me the creeps every single time…

In my experience, Ivo dearest, the most hierarchical societies have the absolute best …er… informal communications networks… in other words; everyone’s a spy but the guy at the top!

It’s great to see you back, my friend. Write more! Soon!

The next 3,000+ words went to my Beta at about 1:00 AM EDT this date.

Within 24 hours of me getting the Beta back, it will go up.

*waves*

Hi...I'm here. Thanks for the PM GL. It took me a few days, but I've read what you sent me.

And it was wonderful. grin

I'm not usually one for AU's, but you have outdone yourself. The depth of your OC's and the situations that you put them in is extraordinary. I don't think I've ever read another fic that had such a deep backround, all perfectly flushed out.

And I liked that you included pics of actors you would like to see in the roles. It helps alot when reading their lines.

The contrast of Anakin/Padme vs. Ivo/Dorme is truly inspired. Ivo/Dorme are what Anakin/Padme should have been, could have been. But aren't.

Especially now that the Empire is looking for a new emperor.

You've managed to capture the voices of all the characters. I've yet to hear a discordant note from anyone. I'm loving your Luke, Leia and Han just as much as your OC's.

Well done indeed and thank you for sharing your work with me.

I'd like to be on the PM list, if you wouldn't mind.

May the Muse be kind to you,

CJM
