My goodness, why is this thread languishing?

I'm still musing about your incredibly detailed understanding of Kalinadian theology, along with its history, culture, social norms, etc. What does the inside of your head look like, I wonder? The Jedi Archives? Is there perhaps a sort of internal Madame Nu keeping it all straight for you? I stand in awe at your creativity, imagination, and sheer intellectual prowess.

On top of what Geo3 said -

I was surprised to see this too! Ahh well, for those of us who are fortunate enough to be 'regular readers', this is still a welcome update. I'm glad to see that you are soldiering(?) along - I DO believe more readers will come along soon enough.

Your Leia, is as always, well written and holding things so close to the vest (and I am admittedly curious to know her thoughts on 'Luke's guest' as evidently she doesn't hold a position of political 'power' to attend a dinner in 'civy' cloths yet she is 'important' enough to sit next to Luke) and as has been stated before, your characters and the rich world of the Kalindians blends so nicely within the structure of a GFFA - a strength in and of themselves with out being anywhere near - and I want to emphasize this point - the equivalent of the 'Mary Sue battalion' of the Galaxy. I hope there's a new post soon, and that the next post will be a nice long one as with each installment - we are getting more questions than answers!!

Please! More SOON!

Well, it's time for replies...

geo3--- Thank you for the praise.

As for your initial question, no real clue. I guess that sometimes readers have the time to respond and sometimes, they don't. Real life is unfortunately like that.

As for the inside of my head, I did once, many years ago describe my memory as a bunch of cross-referenced filing cabinets conatining lots and lots of information, much of it useless in day-to-day life.

As to story points...the Barriss/Leia dynamic will be an interesting one, and I'll stay silent as to whether Barriss is Leia's equal, but I will say that she will give Leia a perspective that she doesn't get from anyone else.

Now, you also have an interesting interplay of personal and governmental relationships in the ongoing Church issue. Both sides are trying to play off one another and acheive objectives. The Church is both desirious of, and fearful of Ivo's (and through him the secular sid eof Kalinadian authority) involvement in what they perceive as a small conspiracy of heretics. The problem is the history. I have frequently alluded to the not dissimilar circumstances that brought down the previous Kalinadian Governing body and radically altererd Kalindan governemnt and society. Everyone is a bit on edge about that...

On a personally level, all this is superimposed on a fight between siblings over what one perceives as whining, and the other thinks of as injustice to her husband.

Sophronia--- Thank you, and yes I do have most of it worked out, at least hazily. wink

Yes, the Archon would be afraid of Exarch Artoras's (i.e. Lani) use of the information. Ergo, he orders the head of her Sect to deliver it. No, the concern about the Jedi 'contamination' of the current Protector is not a new one amongst some church leaders. Though, they do take hope from his actions around his succession and the suppression of teh Jedi Uprising near the end of the Clone Wars.

As to Genty, time will tell.

DarthBreezy--- I thank you for your praise and all of your support.

Don't worry we'll find out Leia's thoughts on that one soon enough...

A brief annoucement, I am endearvoring to get the next post to my Beta by July 2, 2008. If her scheduled permits, I will try to getthe next part posted by 7/4 or 7/5. Sorry for the delay, but real life is becoming a bear.

Hi!

Another quick post.

First, DRL caught me because I travelled overseas for a summer job. And now, I've got a nasty cut on the palm of my right hand (I am presently typing with my left). Nothing dreadfully serious, but still somewhat incapacitating.

So I trust you'll forgive me for not commenting further than saying this post was great. Oh, and that the sight of a windblown Ivo after a ride was fun, too. I hope his gesture towards Genty will help defuse (at least partially) the tense situation between him and Lani.

Cheers,

Lauré happy

First I want to say all those cross referenced file cabinets are not useless information! For me personally and probably most of your readers it is the 'drug of choice' that keeps us sane when DRL eases up a bit and allows us to read you wonderful posts.

So Barriss thinks the Jedi are necessary to deter the God touched Kalindians? WOuldnt that put Ivo on the other side of the line from the skywalkers?

I really enjoyed the small details you give us while imparting important plot decisions - the morning ride with Dorme and a new species to boot.

You should write novels the ones you get money for!

Hello all, just a couple of things. First, thanks to a case that I expected to settle not settling and going to trial starting Monday, my life has been way, way too busy. Ergo, I was unable to make my own self-imposed deadline. I will try to get the next post to my beta by the end of the weekend, but no promises. Sorry.

Secondly two new replies to do:

lauretheil1138--- Sorry to hear about your hand. Hopefully, it'll heal up soon. As to Ivo's gesture defusing things...One would think that it would, but we'll see.

obsessedwithSW --- Thank you for your praise. As to Barriss's view, she fully expects in this new era for Commonwealth to be the Republic's strategic rival, if not clearly their enemy.

Zalkas. Well, not exactly new, but I haven't mentioned them so clearly since Soul of Love and Bravery. They are the chosen riding animal of Kalinadians. They are descened from social, pack hunters, and are mainly omnivorous, but are equipped with teeth reflective of their meat eating preference. They are hexapedal, and can rear up and use their front pair of legs as a grasping set of limbs or weapon a la a North American Brown Bear. They stand about 1.5 - 1.65 meters at the whithers on average (i.e. somewhere between an American Quarter Horse and an American Saddlebred horse in size{according to Wikipedia}). Santry has been Ivo's zalka since Ivo was about 11 and Santry was about 5. As Ivo has been 51 for about 3 months at this point, Santry has been his friend and hunting companion for forty years. Santry is now a slightly slowing middle-aged zalka, who on average will live another 20 - 30 years.

Many have specualted about the level of Zalka intelligence. Some, Ivo included, would insit that they are at least as intelligent as a Terran Dolphin or Chimp {if IVo knew what those things were}. Dorme would compare them to the tusk cats that she rode as a child and saythat the difference wasn't intelligence, but the fact that zalka troop society and Kalinadian society mirror each other so well.

So, more information then you may have wanted. Enjoy!

Oops!

I forgot to do something...

First, I give you an image of Elicashia Arzhan nee Arlotra. It's here Obviously, she's not visibly pregnant here.

For those who may have forgotten, I give you Aileksandrina Arzhan (Drinie) here Not the pic that I used before (it just happens to show the resemblance), and both are from IMDB, and used without permisson and with no intent to make anything off of the use.

Just a quick announcement...DRL has released its grip somewhat, and I should get the next post to my beta this weekend. Of course, she's away for the weekend, so, the next post won't b e until next week...

But it'll have:

...A war avoided (for now)...

...Luke, Leia and Company learning a few tidbits about how the Jedi Order and the rest went the way of the Dodo...and

...a series of acts that might vitiate my first point...

See you all soon.

Chapter 7 Part III “Disputes amongst Researchers”

The Hill Fort Palace, Desdarni, County of Dendri, Capital City of the Commonwealth of Kalinda, Kalinda, 1234 hours

Heinskarso Arharsa was somewhere between flummoxed and deeply intrigued. He had just stood through perhaps the oddest meeting he had ever attended. He had so many unanswered questions.

Of course, the first question was why he had been asked to attend. His cousin, the Protector, had asked him earlier that morning to remain at the meeting rather than simply leaving after fulfilling his duty as Castellan of the Hill Fort Palace to greet and introduce the Exarch and his party. In his years knowing his younger cousin, Heinskarso had come to know that Ivo Arzhan did little in his various official roles on a whim.

Korva Arlotra was there representing the military wing of the executive, Old Count Dendri represented the Council of Notables and the non-clerical Nobility, and the Minister of Internal Security was there for obvious reasons, but why me? I suppose that I represent both the extended family and the sheer fact of the Office of Protector being in charge…Castellan of the Hill fort, Warden of Desdarni and all that…Yet, that seems a strange thing to have to remind the Church about. Though it is no more strange than finding out that the Church has started a military operation against Heretics in our midst without telling anyone. Why do it? Why now? And why tell no one? Yet, for their part, the Clerics said little beyond the cursory and promised that all would be clear upon review of all of the data that they gave us.

Heinskarso glanced down at the datapad in his right hand. After the Clerics had left the scene, Ivo had ordered the datapads that they had left distributed amongst his advisors, in order to get as many viewpoints on events as possible. Ivo had given Heinskarso the files bearing the broad title, “Heresy Investigation and Suppression, Kalinda, Y.A. 2123 – Y.A. 2128.” A touch of a smile crossed Heinskarso’s face as he thought, Thanks for the light reading, Ivo…

The Protector’s Office, The Hill Fort Palace, Desdarni, County of Dendri, Capital City Of the Commonwealth of Kalinda, Kalinda, 1237 hrs.

Ivo slowly sat down behind his desk. Of course, he didn’t really view it as his desk. His desk was in his study attached to the Library at Dunlindia. This was the Protector’s desk, and had been carved from one magnificent Rodian Degtra tree almost 400 years ago for the Protector Heinsa VI. It had been a gift from Heinsa’s brother, the Archon Janissarius II upon Heinsa’s succession to his Uncle Kisavalivo III’s throne. It had also been one of the last pleasantries exchanged between the two brothers. Ivo tried not to reflect on the furniture’s history as he read the title of the file folder on the datapad from the Clerics, “An overview of recent Anti-Heresy Investigations and Operations, Y.A. 2128.”

I should read this and move on, but my sense of foreboding is in overdrive. It can only be about this…after all, the last week has gone from triumph to triumph. The Lozar Pirates in pay of the Hutts have been defeated by the Rim Squadron, The Coruscanti Republic has backed down on Toskal, even if not agreeing to pay reparations, my daughter-in-law has ceased staring daggers at me for the Navy assigning Anlweé as Main Battery Commander on the cruiser Aliak, given that she’s dry-docked at Kalinshu for six months of Post - Toskal repairs and an engine refit, and my sister actually wrote me an apology for her conduct over the last year after she heard from Genty about my letter to him. All is going well…

Ivo sighed, and said aloud, “Might as well face the demons.” He plugged the datapad into the reader slot on his desk, and pushed the activation control.

Coruscant, The Grand City Hotel, 334th Floor, The Penthouse Suite, 1947 hrs.

“I don’t know, Cordé.”

“Laecilla, Majesty, you can do this. The results of my research are clear.”

The Queen of Naboo’s left eyebrow twitched. Not because of the overly familiar use of her actual first name by an underling, that she might have to get used to if events followed where this conversation seemed to be tending, but because of the less than subtle hint of exasperation storming into Cordé Naberrie’s voice. Carefully, Laecilla Firsdelié, Queen Henillidia of the Naboo, responded.

“Cordé, I don’t doubt your research. I certainly believe that tradition of the initial colonists and the statutes of King Felraus both give me the right to grant consent to a marriage over parental objections, but it would appear unseemly. He is my cousin and it might make him appear too cowardly to face the potential rejection by your father…”

A gusting echo of anger blew into the tone of Cordé’s voice, “Bren is no coward.”

Laecilla laughed. “No, he most certainly is not. Given that we agree on that, why should he not simply ask your father’s consent? It is simply non-binding tradition at this point. After all, he already has yours.”

Silence filled the room for several seconds. Laecilla quickly understood its implications.

“Cordé?”

“Yes, Majesty.”

“He has proposed hasn’t he? I mean all of us who know him suspect that he might, but if he hasn’t yet, isn’t all of this premature?”

“Majesty, I have decided. I do not plan to wait for him to act. I will.”

All of her years of education, training, and observation deserted Laecilla for a moment. All she could say in response was, “Oh.”

New Republica Restaurant, 500 Republica, Coruscant, 1950 hrs.

“Luke, seriously, snap out of it.” The exasperated tone of the young Corellian woman’s voice betrayed both her concern and her annoyance.

“I’m sorry, Aubé, I know that I am ruining dinner.” Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight and Hero of the Republic paused. Then he quietly said, “It’s just eating at me. Ever since I read that speech, and started looking into to it, it just seems that the truth is designed to disturb.”

A less than lady-like huff of air preceded Aubé Canaille’s reply. “Luke, you shouldn’t take too much to heart the angry rantings of a Kalinadian noble.”

Luke looked at her with a vague air of disappointment. Aubé had seen the look before, during the war. It was Luke’s polite farm boy way of expressing the sense that the person he was dealing with was being too dense to be tolerated for long. After a moment, he said, “The problem is that once you get past the anger and pain, and look into the facts, most of the points that Arzhan made in his message to the Senate had more than some validity. I don’t mean that every bit of it was true, but think about it, the Holonet records show that there was some truth to all of his accusations. After all, what did his father attempt at Endor, that I didn’t at the same place twenty-some years later?”

“But,” Aubé interjected, “just because there is some truth in them, doesn’t mean that he was right or that the Jedi deserved what happened.”

“No, you’re right, but it’s just depressing to find out that this group that I idealized was as troubled and human as any other. I just wonder how I can do things differently. All of this has simply made my life much more difficult.”

Aubé reached across the table. She gently laid her hand on top of Luke’s and said, “You’re not alone, and to paraphrase Barriss about all this, you simply need to follow where the Force leads you.”

“Yes, but it’s not that simple. If the Force guided Master Yoda, Ben, Master Windu and all the others to attempt to arrest Palpatine and restore the Republic and if it guided Ben and Yoda to remove my mother sister and me into hiding in attempt to control my father, then how can I be certain that the Force isn’t leading me…us… to the same doom that it lead them?”

“Well, Luke, I’d like to say that it’s because you’re smarter than they were, but Rogue Leader, I doubt that. The real reason is that you have a better heart. That will guide you.”

Seeing him about to object, Aubé quickly continued, “No, that isn’t a criticism of the late exalted Master Yoda or of Ben Kenobi. It’s a simple statement of fact. Look at the records from the Holonet, the Kalinadian News Service, the Old Imperial Archives…biased as some of those sources are, one note rings clear and true: The Jedi were obsessed with ideas and ideals, not people. People only seemed to matter in relation to the ideas and ideals.”

Luke pursed his lips, then quietly said, “Well, that point of view would explain why they seemed so unable to understand my father or my unwillingness to kill him. But, it wouldn’t quite explain why they didn’t realize what was happening. Though, I suppose that it would be neat and easy to wrap that question up by simply saying that it was all part of Palpatine’s plots.”

“Yes,” Aubé said, a thoughtful tone creeping into her voice, “but wouldn’t that be almost too easy an explanation?”

Luke smiled at her, and said, “probably, but it does offer the comfort of there not being any more Sith.”

Kosus, County of Feltraus, South Mountain Province, Continent of Felsnar, Southern Hemisphere, Kalinda 1734 hrs local time.

Heinskalus Destrakal had been born the son of a hunting guide and his shopkeeper wife. He had lived an unremarkable middle-class life in one of the more rural areas of the most sparsely settled region of Kalinda. He had learned in school that the original colonists of Kalinda had viewed the small mountainous continent barely connected to the world’s second largest continent by a narrow land bridge as little more than an area for mining. For Heinskalus, it had been a vast treasure trove of lessons and things to be learned. He’d learned many in the cave where he’d found the holocrystals amongst the skeletons.

The crystals had been an exciting find, but even his 11-year old mind grasped that as soon as he had opened and read one on his datapad, that he was a criminal. The teachings of the Nameless One, the Great God of Life, the Lord of Chaos as the fearful Orthodox called him, were forbidden, and had been for over two thousand years. To possess them would lead one to the Church’s prisons or worse. To practice them was an invitation to Church to send Inquisitors and Witch Hunters. This would almost inevitably lead to one’s death. So, he had kept quiet. He had studied in secret. As he became an adult, he signed to the Kalinadian Merchant Service and traveled the recently risen Galactic Empire. There, he had first learned, in detail, of the kindred spirits of the outside Galaxy: The Sith.

Surreptiously, he had learned what he could from them. He rejected many of their teachings as too focused on hierarchies and establishing orderly control. This was a stultifying as the teachings of the Church on Kalinda. It seemed to him to deny life’s flow. What he gained from the Sith was technique, and a healthy understanding of strategic secrecy.

When he’d finally retired from the Merchant service, without having given into the hierarchy enough to have received an Officer’s license, he had returned to Kalinda and begun to gather followers and allies. He had been successful; despite the Church’s best efforts he had over the last ten years assembled a fair number of disciples. The recent incidents in Beltrasia had changed things.

Gastrayus was always a fool, but there is perhaps something to be gained by this premature disclosure. The Hierarchs and partisans of unnatural order will react, but in their orderly reaction, they will provide opportunities to restore life to its proper flow. Perhaps they have given us the key to return the world to glorious freedom. I must think on this.

As always, in moments touching the God’s power, the whites of Heinskalus’s eyes turned a silver-speckled black.

Dimitor, Gallinore, Free Hapan League, Hapes Cluster, 2234 hrs.

Leira Helcas smiled to herself as she looked about the apartment’s small living room. Gathered about her was the core group of the little cell of Hapan resistance that she had raised. She’d given them what she knew to be a suicide mission, but they seemed overjoyed. It still amazed her how trusting they had been.

They knew that she had come to Hapes with the Imperial Outer Rim Legions as a supply officer. They knew that she had stayed when the Kalinadians allowed any non-Kalinadian Imperial Troops who so desired to leave. Yet, it had only taken a few meetings, and some surplus Republic/Imperial weapons to convince them that she was a Republic Sleeper agent amongst the Kalinadians.

Of course, the much vaunted Kalinadian Ministry for External Security Special Intelligence Service had not detected her status as an Imperial agent either. It hadn’t mattered until her orders had come. They had been simple and succinct. She was to plan for her proto-cell of Hapan freedom fighters to attack a high value Kalinadian or Free Hapan League target. She was to make sure that all evidence lead to the Republic as the supporter of what the Kalinadians would inevitably label as terrorists.

It seems the mission has been accomplished, Madame Director, mission accomplished.

The tall, blond woman sitting across from her asked, “Leira, can you get us any information on the security that will accompany the League Defense Minister and whoever the Kalinadian scum with him ?”

Leira looked at the other woman, and said, “Only in a round about way. As a supply officer, I can get into the transport database and tell you how many speeders are involved. You could work backwards from there to the number of troops.”

A young man, a scientist who had worked in one of Gallinore’s many research labs, before the conquest, asked, “Are you sure that you can get us some plasma grenades? The DH-17 blasters that the Republic has given us are fine, but I doubt that we can put up enough fire to achieve our goal without eliminating as many security troops as possible quickly. I think that that will require grenades.”

Without betraying her initial impulse to laugh at these fools who thought that they had a chance of succeeding, Leira said reassuringly, “Don’t worry, my sources tell me that the Republic will provide everything that we need.”

I've lost track of who Corde is. But I look forward to see where her marriage arrangements will take her.

The heretical uprising begins to become more clear. Are disiples of chaos a bit like an anarchist convention? And, out of idle curiosity, whose holocrystals and whose skeletons?

I enjoyed the last section. Very nicely written scene of a mastermind arranging her unwitting pawns.

Plasma grenades? What about adhesive grenades-- I understand they "get them every time".

Oh that Corde is quite the adventuress isn't she... gotta admire her spunk though. I hope Bren knows what he's in for. laugh

And it looks like what Luke said about there not being anymore Sith is slightly untrue... from a certain point of view. whistling Which I'm sure he'll discover as soon as he gets to Kalindia.

And the Imps are stirring things up. cool

Nice update. Thanks for the PM

The players seem to be in motion. I liked how things are interweaving.

I especially liked this.

Good explanation about the Jedi and how they viewed things.

Good job.

“Disputes among Researchers” – that’s an interesting title. I’m still trying to figure out how to connect all the dots. This is a complex, thickly peopled tale! I hope some day your schedule will allow more frequent updates. This is the kind of novel I’d like to sit down and read in great swathes.

Anyway, picking up a few items from the tantalizing hints you’ve left in this post…

I’ve always enjoyed the relationship between the Protector (Ivo love ) and his closest advisors. Even when they are his close friends, he never forgets himself, and never tips his hand to anyone. OK, maybe to Dormé. But I think she often has to read between the lines, too.

“All of her years of education, training, and observation deserted Laecilla for a moment. All she could say in response was, “Oh.” Love the understatement! I guess Kalinadian women don’t often propose.

It’s very nice to catch a glimpse of Luke and Aube, but “… it does offer the comfort of there not being any more Sith...” oh-oh, Luke… the Old Jedi Order made this mistake, too…

As always, I am in awe and the breadth and depth of your knowledge about your story's universe. Bravo!
