Then, as quick as he had ordered to attack, he ordered it to withdraw. Jaina Solo, or almost-Jaina Solo, as he would refer to this physical projection for now, had seen his tactic and was about to compensate for it, but, like the wise warrior he was, he immediately found another weakness.

Kick his butt like you kicked Lah's, Jaina!

Great chapter, thanks for the PM.

Ooh! I wonder if Valin the seeded helped them take his sister and that's why he's upset but everyone else is furious?

Kick his Butt Jaina! I wonder why Atran is particulary scared of Jaina?

I really want to know the full backstory for Kharran... I can see there's a lot more to him than we actually know, but you aren't telling us yet either.

I'm glad that they found the information about Zonoma Sekot, I only hope that Sekot will be able to help them as in the canon universe.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Jagged Fel was alone at last. Surrounded by nothing but empty space in his room, he sat down and began listening to the tapes his little bugs had recorded. Even as he listened, he kept one eye trained on his closed door, for the moment it began sliding open he would have to scramble.

Thankfully, he had an excuse here, reading Scorcher technical manuals. It would fit both his character and give him a decent alibi to be sitting here right now. After all, Jagged Fel would know that being with his sister at this moment would not help her case right now. Everyone in this ship thought she was the traitor except for Jagged Fel.

He didn't include Wyn herself, for he knew her mental conditioning was poor. Even light torture could cause her to break, and make her sincerely believe she was the traitor. And if she was innocent and didn't have a slave seed implanted in her back, if she made such an admission, she would look even worse than a person controlled by a slave seed . . .

He didn't want to see the consequences that would be wrought if such a scenario came true. Even if she wasn't his Wyn, even though she was essentially an almost-Wyn, he didn't care about that. Wyn was Wyn, whether in a universe once-removed from his own or a hundred times like this place seemed to be. He would protect Wyn, even if Wyn hated him, even if she pulled a blaster on him like she just did in a fit of madness. Wynssa Fel would always be his little sister, someone he would always shield, and protect, no matter what the circumstances.

No matter how many people turned against her.

And so he listened to more tapes. So far, there was nothing incriminating. He noticed Valin had a tendency to be in Wyn's room a lot, and that still rankled him. He winced as he heard Wyn screaming and crying, and he felt pangs of both jealousy and worry as Valin interfered, and healed her. Created nightmares out of the searing images that Jag realized he would never understand.

Not unless he went through the same experiences. And considering what he had heard already, he didn't blame Wyn for any of this. He heard Wyn tell of her nightmares to Valin, on how Artran Kharran and his subordinates relentlessly tortured her. How her scars, small and miniscule at first, grew each passing day as Artran cut the main scar another few centimeters or added a new one alongside it. How they lacerated her, bled her out, brought her to the threshold of death several times and brought her back just to hurt her again-

It was hard not to cry at this. Jag blinked away a tear and repressed the rest. He would cry over this later, once he was done.

He had no idea of what agony Wyn lived with each day. He had known it was bad, bad enough to bring her to the edge daily, hourly . . . but he had never thought it was at this point. That she literally could not live without Valin's continued presence, without his love. Otherwise, she would revert. Otherwise, her memories would transform from nightmares back into reality. She would be worse than the display she had shown back in the cafeteria. Much worse. She had attempted to shoot Jag in her current state. In a frenzied, suicidal, insane version of that, Jag had no doubt she wouldn't even recognize him. He would be just another blur.

Wyn would kill him without consideration, without mercy. Without the knowledge she was killing her brother. And if she ever re-awakened from that maddened state, when she found out who she killed, what she had fired at-

No. That scenario wasn't an reality yet. He would not think those thoughts. Not when he could still prevent what he was envisioning.

He would not let anyone named Wynssa Fel-whether his Wyn, an almost-Wyn, or a Wyn so different from his own that he would barely recognize her-suffer. That was not the way of a brother. Especially one trained among the Chiss. He loved Wyn dearly not because of choice, but because he had to. It was Chiss indoctrination. One must love and teach a sibling in the case he died. If he died, Wyn would take his place. Just like Cherith with Davin, like himself when Cherith . . .

His beloved Cherith died somewhere in the Unknown Regions.

Perhaps she was killed by the Vong. Captured, maybe. How long had the Vong penetrated this galaxy, or his own, in the universes? Could Cherith been the first casualty against the Yuuzhan Vong? Or was she still out there, in this reality or his own, languishing in Vong chains-

No. For now, he had to presume his sister Cherith, his teacher, was dead. Right now, Wynssa, his student as well as sister, remained alive. The teacher had to move to protect his student until he was ready. It was no different with Jagged and Wynssa. And she definitely wasn't ready for a difficult trial right now.

Now he realized why Wyn was like this. Why she was maddened. She needed Valin. And even though it had been merely a day since he had left, she hadn't slept for even a minute. No sleep, being without a love, terrified of the images surely coming in . . . Jag knew he would eventually go mad as well. And he was in far better shape mentally to begin with. He couldn't even begin to wonder how Wyn was right now.

After all, she had lost her entire family. If one was kind he would say Jagged had returned, that she wasn't alone anymore. Biologically, that wasn't true. He was born elsewhere, galaxies, universes away. But in reality . . . whatever reality was now, Jag, in his eyes, was still Wyn's brother.

Even if her Jag had died. In a way, Jag was indeed her Jag, just like she was his Wyn as well. They were also different. But they could still be siblings. And if her Jag was not here to protect and help her, this Jag was going to atone for everything. He was going to make sure he could provide for her until it was time the teacher could deem the student ready to graduate.

And the time when she was ready to graduate at last was when he would allow himself to leave. If there was a way to leave, anyway. Jag still had not found a way to escape this place. But even if he could right now, he wouldn't abandon this place. Even if he could leave to gather reinforcements, who would believe his admittedly daft story? His father? No, he would have Jagged committed to a mental health center. The Skywalkers and Solos? No, they would put Jaina into deep meditation and exile for a few months . . . and send Jag back to Soontir to be committed into a mental health center.

Either way, he could not leave. Not until he was finished here.

Sighing, he tossed another bug into the trash. Nothing yet. He had been at this for hours now. Just listening and fast-forwarding until he heard some semblance of speech, but none of the conversations had proven anything so far. Sure, it showed no sign that Wyn was the traitor, but there also wasn't anything to disprove the current sentiment.

Jag knew he had to find the bug he had placed in the bathroom, to overhear any possible conversations between a traitor and a villip, if he was going to find anything. Unfortunately, he hadn't found anything yet. But he knew what to look for, he just had to find the first piece of this little puzzle.

Was Wyn truly a traitor, or was it someone setting her up? Jag resolved that no matter what was the resolution, he would support Wyn. Even if he heard her voice speaking to some Yuuzhan Vong whose guttural voice was unmistakenable, he would help her. He would make her loyal again if she was a conscious traitor, or if she had an implant he would make sure she would recover without it.

But again, he realized, he was jumping to conclusions. He was already thinking Wyn was guilty, after resolving that he wouldn't think that? What kind of brother did that make him?

He listened to another bug, and began fast-forwarding. He waited until he heard a voice. Surprisingly, it wasn't Wyn who was the speaker. Nor was it Valin.

He had found the bug he had placed in the bathroom. And he had found a conversation involving the villip.

"How did you get that villip?" the voice said. "What's your name, infidel?"

Then the human spoke. And Jag immediately dropped the stylus in his hand. His eyes widened. It wasn't Wyn. But this . . . this was more heinous than he had expected.

"My name isn't important. What is important is that I can give you the Archangel."

And that was when he knew.

The traitor was Valin Horn. And he had set things up for Wyn to take the fall.

The young man Wyn loved and relied on so much had not only betrayed her trust, but her love as well. A loving man would not do this to a woman he supposedly loved.

Wyn was suffering right now because of him. Jag's fists clenched into balls, and he barely restrained himself from pounding his desk in anger. He had not trusted Valin to begin with! Why hadn't he followed up on his original suspicions until now? How many secrets had Valin given the enemy, whether by choice or by coercion? How many people had died, or will die, because of Valin's treachery?

Jag could not bear to listen to anymore. Rubbing his forehead as he stared at the screen, as the speaker was indeed identified as Valin Horn, he knew what had to happen. Even though he had long suspected that Valin was the traitor . . . how badly would this crush Wyn? How would she take this news? How long would she remain sane after she found out? What would stop her from trying to kill Valin, or worse, Jaina, Anakin, Tahiri, Kyle, Yannik . . . anyone who happened to be in her way?

Nothing besides her death.

Jag got up, and immediately assembled a tape with every conversation in the bathroom. He didn't care what Kyle and Tahiri would think of him for planting a bug in his sister's bathroom. All that mattered was that he found the traitor. And, in the end, that was all Kyle and Tahiri would care about. None of the Vong would touch Tahiri's babies, and Kyle would be able to protect the surviving Jedi and the Archangel.

In the end, that was all that mattered.

As the recording was completed, Jag grabbed the tape and pocketed it. He also remembered to remind Kyle and Tahiri that it was best that Wyn would never find out who the traitor was. As much as Jag detested Valin right now, he knew what would happen to Wyn if she found out. And that was something he never wanted to see . . .

Artran Kharran sat down inside the abandoned, decrypt building, coughing from all the smog he had inhaled after rescuing Riina. She looked at him sickly, her face struggling to contain her body's natural reaction to the pollution she was breathing in. "I'm sorry, Artran." she mumbled for what must have been the hundredth time.

And for the hundredth time, Artran replied "It's wasn't you. It was me. I made a minor mistake, that's all. I've never had to coordinate ground operations like this before."

He saw Nom Anor staring at the two of them for a few seconds, and Nom quickly turned his head as Artran's eyes turned to him. Artran frowned at Nom. Nom had made it back to the safe house before him or Riina. Just as he had expected: Nom was good at only one thing, and that was saving his own skin.

Nothing would protect Nom the next time, Artran decided. Nom was little more than an annoyance now, he had become that useless. He needed to find a use for this imbecile, and soon, or more than just the attack on the condominium would fail.

He sighed. There was little choice, now. The selfish infidel and his special-ops unit had stolen two of the Jedi he had hoped to gain. For the first time as warmaster, Artran Kharran would need to force his hand, and compromise. If he could not get what he wanted, no one else would get any of it either. He would kill all of it.

"Nom Anor." Artran spoke. Nom Anor was busy pretending to be engrossed in something, anything else, and he jumped quite dramatically and stared at Artran.

"Yes, Warmaster?"

"Prefect, call my brother. Tell him to start the razing of Bakura. We have Endor – we don't have an outpost this far into the other arm of this galaxy. Tell them to get the Lahs' dovin basal ready. Launch my plan for the Bakuran offensive." Artran ordered.

Nom, of course, was only thinking of escape, and he made that clear with his response. "How are we going to get out of here, then, my lord? You're going to put us under a severe time limit."

"We'll steal a shuttle or something similiar. I can tolerate the slime of technology, if it will allow us to survive long enough. I'm sure the Yuuzhan Vong will tolerate my conduct of this. Now tell them to implement my plan." Artran ordered.

"My spies say that the Bakurans have memorized your general plan of seizing planets. They will try to stop you."

"They can try, but they will fail. There's too many infidel civilians, and if there's anything these people hate doing, it's firing on their own civilians. We have no such qualms. Now tell them to begin the plan. There will be a great pyre built here, Nom Anor. This is where the infidels will finally burn in the hells and be at the complete mercy of the gods. Now tell them my orders before I decide you're too incompetent to even be my messenger."

The last message added extra weight, and emphasis on the too incompetent. Nom immediately decided against continuing his argument and walked out of the room to converse with the villips of Artran's subordinates.

The groups were all there. Yun-Yuuzhan, under the control of Sharrvon Kharran. Yun-Yammka, led by the legendary warrior Czulkang Lah. Nas Choka, who Artran discerned as the schemer, led Yun-Harla. Malik Carr and Dermia Kurs led the groups named for the Lovers, Yun-Txiin and Yun-Q'aah. It was a truly massive, glorious fleet, that Artran had assembled throughout this war, and its many battles. It was a fleet weaned on victory, and overwhelming, brilliant victories at that. They would not question the orders of the commander who had won them all of these battles. Especially since Artran Kharran had never lost. Not even once. The infidels hadn't even been able to seriously threaten the Sunslayer.

Back on the Sunslayer, torches burned with each of Artran's victories. The flames were tall, glorious, stocked with fuel garnered from infidel plants and remains, unable to ever burn out. But one torch remained unlit. The grand one. The one that symbolized his victory in the war. The one that would only be lit once Artran succeeded.

Everyone believed that Artran would light it after this final battle. But Artran wouldn't. In the end, it was just another minor torch to light. His goals and plans still hadn't been completed at that point. Even Sharrvon didn't know the full extent of Artran's plans. Only Riina knew it all.

That was why he couldn't afford to lose her. She was his sole confidant. She was the only person he could afford to love.

And right now, all Artran could do was twittle his thumbs and wait until one of Anor's spies secured a shuttle so they could smuggle Riina.

Being in Nom Anor's mercy was not something Artran ever wanted to be in again. But Anor's penchant for saving-self would not allow him to betray Artran right now. In order to prevent Artran's escape Anor would have to sacrifice himself. But Anor was too selfish to consider doing such a thing. That was the sole consolation.

Still, he would have to be more careful. Considering how restless the commanders were becoming, Sharrvon knew he could not afford to be put into more situations like this. Even when his victories were not enough to keep the commanders from questioning . . . he would have to be careful indeed. Before they found everything out.

But for now, all he could do was wait.

Sharrvon smiled as he saw Nom Anor relay the words that he had longed to hear for nearly a month now. After Endor, which had been surprisingly easy for such a well-defended little forest moon, he had desired to send the Sunslayer into battle once more. He knew he would not continue to have these opportunities to slay infidels for much longer, he wanted to enjoy every moment of it as long as he could.

They stood no chance. None of the infidels could hope to match with the invincible Sunslayer, the ship that had destroyed the Chimaera, the Rebel Dream, the Mon Mothma, and even the ancient but legendary Dreadnought Starrider. All of those ships had served as the infidel fleet's flagship, the pride and joy, the last hope. They had all been annhiliated by the Sunslayer's blessed flame, weapons designed by the gods' gift to the Yuuzhan Vong, Warmaster Artran Kharran.

His brother, the architect of the successful war, was down on Bakura right now. As Nom Anor gave him the information necessary to completely destroy, Sharrvon grew worried. All of this was for naught if Artran did not return. He could die on the cursed planet, a worthy sacrifice to Yun-Yuuzhan, but would be of little use. His death would demoralize the Yuuzhan Vong, or make him a name to rally around as they finished off the infidel exiles. Sharrvon did not wish to find out which scenario would prove true.

He nodded and dismissed the pathetic prefect. He had heard enough tales of Nom Anor to know the prefect was a master manipulator of infidels, but with the Yuuzhan Vong he wasn't even worthy of licking dirt off of the Kharrans' feet. No one outsmarted the Kharrans, no one. His brother had made sure of it.

Sharrvon smiled. It was time, at long last, to begin the countdown before the galaxy was his. Before glory bowed down to him. Everything, anything, would soon become his.

He activated the villips, and it was not long until the other warlords answered the call. The beautiful, broken face of Dermia stared at Sharrvon suggestively, and Sharrvon refused to show his attraction, Dermia was Malik's partner. Sharrvon would find a mate in due time. Nas looked thoughtful, as he often did, and Malik seemed almost ravenous for creating havoc and destruction.

Only Czulkang Lah, with his quizzical, tired look, did not appear ready to battle. No matter, Sharrvon decided. Brother's plan had a use for tired old warriors such as Czulkang Lah.

"Begin the invasion. The Battle Group of Yun-Yammka will rush the enemy and split them into two pieces, and drop the basal on their planet. The Battle Group of Yun-Txiin will loop to the left, and Yun-Q'aah will head rightward, and they will envelop the infidels. The Battle Group of Yun-Harla will initially head and engage with Q'aah, but will eventually loop around and plug the rear of the planet, and crush the escape convoys. The Battle Group of Yun-Yuuzhan will remain in reserve in the case the infidels put up a better fight in some quarters than we expect." Sharrvon replied. Already, behind him, the blaze bugs buzzed and whirred, as the invasion fleet slowly approached Bakura, and the blue bugs representing the infidels began to crawl onto the board as the fleet entered the outer limits of the Bakura system.

"Understood, Supreme Commander." Nas Choka replied, before he left. Sharrvon barely suppressed a grin. Supreme Commander Sharrvon Kharran. It just sounded so . . . right.

Czulkang Lah glared at Kharran, realizing what the orders meant, and growled "Do-ro'ik vong pratte." almost sarcastically. Sharrvon almost ordered the execution the old man definitely deserved, but halted himself moments before he gave the order. It was best to not have a rift in the forces right before the last battle of this glorious war. Czulkang Lah remained popular among the Vong forces, and executing the warlord for something so trivial would not do.

"We are moving now." Dermia's sultry voice replied before her face vanished from Sharrvon's sight.

Malik Carr's voice repeated Czulkang's phase, but he sounded far more enthusiastic. Good, Sharrvon thought as he bared his teeth in a grin, the Yuuzhan Vong always need some useful fools.

And as the fleet spread, as the red blaze bugs whirred as they mvoed towards their positions, Sharrvon's grin grew wider as he saw the blue bugs form up around a massive sphere representing Bakura. The last battle of the war was about to begin.

And Sharrvon was going to win it. He was going to do down in the tomes of Yuuzhan Vong history as a hero.

And he owed it all to Brother.

"Um, ah, that's a Bakuran roadblock. What now?" Valin asked in the rear seat of the landspeeder as it raced through Bakuran streets. A massive blockade, blocking routes both grounded and in the air, and Anakin couldn't see a way out of this.

"I don't know, how about you shoot the stangers already!" Malinza responded, before taking a hard right down a wide alley. White bolts and red lasers punctuated the air around them, blasting through the remaining unbroken windows and nearly hitting Anakin in the face.

"Force, you're going to get us killed." Valin whimpered.

"We're only going to get killed if you keep holding your fire like that! This thing has been protected against laser fire, but it can only take so many shots." Malinza shouted back.

The whole trip had been complete madness since almost before they had left. It seemed the commander of the spec-ops unit had reported Malinza to Bakuran police, and the police had tried to arrest the whole group. Of course, Malinza had taken the brazen way out and she had opened fire. And so the group had piled into three landspeeders and were now officially outlaws in Bakuran society.

Not something Anakin wanted, especially considering the disk in his pocket. If the landspeeder was blown apart, nothing would save the galaxy. Nothing.

Laser shots suddenly blew through the final intact window, and all of the occupants ducked as the fire barely missed them.

Valin looked outside. "Speeder bikes!" he managed to cry out.

"Oh great, just what we need," moaned the fourth occupant of the vehicle, Dominick Yeris.

"Keep them off my back! I think there's a shortcut to the left! We might make it there before everyone else!" Malinza shouted, and wheeled the speeder to the left, down another alley. Anakin saw clotheslines snap as the speeder plowed into them, and get sucked under.

Another laser shot hit the trunk, and Anakin briefly stopped hiding long enough to look up with the blaster rifle 'relieved' from one of the policemen that had been shot back in the parking lot. Aiming at one of the bikes, any of the three bikes, he fired a burst and missed. Two lasers from a bike narrowly flew by the speeder in response, and Anakin instinctively ducked, only to find that no lasers had flown through the speeder.

"There's way too many of them . . ." Valin cried as the speeder picked up more pursuit behind them, a police hoverspeeder and another pair of bikes.

For once I agree with you, Valin. Anakin thought briefly before taking another peek up. Finding a bike relatively close to the speeder, Anakin put the rifle to full-automatic and fired a long stream of shots, one of them connecting with the driver. The bike and driver flipped in the air and crashed into the windshield of the hoverspeeder, and that collided into a building, crumbling a substantial portion of it.

"Nice shot!" Valin congratulated before shots streamed through the car and hit Malinza's seat.

Anakin, instantly thinking the worst, especially after a sudden wild manuever in the car, shouted "Malinza, you all right?"

"I'm fine! The seat's been proofed, too. They thought of everything when they made this." Malinza answered, her voice revealing nothing but grim determination. However, a brief check through the Force revealed Malinza's jitters and fright from the near miss, and Anakin decided it was best not to push the issue.

A wild turn to the left, and they flew down the avenue, the pursuit still chasing. Anakin felt himself crash into Valin, and Valin was nearly ejected from the vehicle through the open window.

Malinza overcompensated then, and there was a right swerve even tighter than the left turn. Anakin's head actually went through the open window for a second, brushing a small, hanging shard out of the vehicle with his head. Thankfully, the sharp point didn't puncture anything.

And that was when they saw more trouble. A military convoy was crossing the intersection in front of them, and they were parked right alongside the roadwalk.

"What the hell are you doing, ma'am?!" Dominick wailed as Malinza slammed on the brakes.

"Wish I knew. Better hope this works." Malinza mumbled, and she suddenly turned the vehicle left, and the speeder scraped against a large transport for a few feet, before breaking free and speeding down the road. The military forces, evidently surprised at seeing one of their speeders fleeing from police, did not open fire. As Anakin recovered enough to look out the rear of the speeder, he saw three speeder bikes crash into the transports one by one, increasing the intensity and scope of the explosion, until the transport's fuel pods ignited. Then the transport exploded into a gigantic mushroom-shape cloud of fire and smoke, and the smoke rose into the air as the transport plummeted towards the ground.

"Well, it worked." Dominick said, his face showing satisfaction. He turned to the Jedi. "You know, this better be worth making us felons, Jedi."

"Trust me, it is." Anakin promised. They were almost there . . . almost to the headquarters, he could feel it. He reached out to the Force, exposed himself to it for a few crucial seconds, and found Danni. Conscious. Roughed up, but alive and unafraid. Jysella he still could not locate . . .

"Malinza, take a right. The intersection after this one!" Anakin exclaimed, as he sensed the direction where Danni's signature was located.

"Yeah. Good idea." Malinza breathed, and they made it through the first intersection before they heard the sirens once more.

"Oh shavit. Don't these guys have anything better to do?" Malinza moaned.

That was when a massive hovertank, heavily armed and bristling with cannons, blocked their way across the intersection. The cannons turned on the speeder and Anakin could only see how much of an overkill that the hovertank could perform on the speeder . . .

Malinza slammed on the brakes, and executed a perfect U-turn and drove the opposite direction. Into his headset, Dominick shouted "Car Two, Car Three, what's your status? We're in a lot of trouble here and I don't think we're gonna make it!", his voice growing increasingly frantic each each second the car turned right down an alleyway. Anakin noticed metallic skywalk around the alley, he made a mental note of it.

"This is Car Three. Zekk's found Danni. We're a few intersections away from where he's sensing her." Kira Tamith's voice answered.

Jaina answered for the second speeder. "Car One, this is Car Two. We've gotten turned around. Our route's no good. We're pulling back while the car's still got cortosis shielding and we'll secure the docking bay. It looks like it's up to you guys, Car Three."

Looks like that's what we're going to do as well. Anakin thought. The vehicle's condition was only deteriorating with each scrape and laser blast on the cortosis. Anakin doubted this thing would ever run again after it was turned off. They made a left down the alleyway, that was the only possible route they could take that did not involve throwing the vehicle in reverse.

"Copy that. Car Three, continue mission." Dominick said, and as they drove on they found a dead end.

"This is Car One! We're in deep trouble here!" Dominick was able to shout as Malinza stopped and threw the speeder in reverse.

"Not good . . ." she murmured. Then suddenly, Anakin saw a police speeder pull up at the corner of the alley, and police officers pulled out their blasters and began firing.

"Everyone get down!" Malinza shouted, and suddenly the car sped up extremely quickly, and Anakin, seeing no other option, buried himself in the bench seat. He felt Valin's head and short hair bang against his own, but that pain was ignored as there was a suddenly jolt and a hard crunching sound.

There was nothing for one second. Then Anakin heard Malinza order softly "Dominick, tell them the speeder's totaled. Everyone, out of the car! We're getting out of here on foot! Get to the building on the right!"

Oh no, Anakin thought, as he touched his head and felt blood and a momentary dizziness. He looked up and saw Valin had the same sort of injury.

That was when Malinza tore the driver's side passenger door opened and dragged Valin out of the car. "Quickly, get out! There will be reinforcements." she hissed. It sounded so distant, Anakin realized. All he could hear was a peculiar ringing . . . and little else. He could hear distant voices, perhaps it was Malinza and Valin, talking to each other.

"Right, right." Anakin heard himself moan, rubbing his head and forcing his way out of his door. Rubbing his head, and fighting blurred vision, he stumbled towards the open door where Dominick was standing. Forcing himself to block the pain, and control his dizziness so he could only see clarity, he ran as fast as he could towards the door.

He heard Dominick shout something into the radio, and Anakin walked up the stairs, tripped on the last one and fell inside, onto the welcome mat. Struggling to his feet, he crawled inside, and leaned up against the wall next to the door, and rested his head there and closed his eyes. The ringing noise had not faded yet, and he still could not hear anything that didn't sound blurred and distant.

"Agh," he groaned, grabbing his pounding, pulsing head. Finally, he sent the Force through his mind and he cast away the fog perforating throughout, and when he opened his eyes he saw clear vision once more.

His hearing had returned with a massive whoosh and keen, and suddenly he heard Dominick urge "C'mon, ma'am! Hurry!" as there was nearby blaster fire.

Anakin scrambled to his feet, to find Valin falling onto the floor, and Malinza on her knees, clutching her stomach. Oh no, he thought. No, not now. We can't lose Malinza. We just can't. he frantically thought.

Valin managed to crawl forward, his left side splattered with blood that apparently was not his. Leaning up against the nearest wall, he checked his side slowly, as he realized he wasn't the uninjured one. His eyes widened as he stared in Malinza's direction.

Malinza was about to fall forward as Anakin grabbed her, around her back and bleeding midsection. Dragging Malinza away from the door, he saw Dominick quickly slam the door and lock it multiple times by entering a code on a portable keypad and placing it on the door.

Dominick turned to Anakin said "That'll stop them but it won't hold for long. Not with the slicers Bakura has. We have to get out of here and get the commander medical attention," he said, his voice growing progressively emptier with each word as he realized the inevitable. There was no way to save Malinza, not with a wound like hers. Even if she persisted for a few minutes there was little way to transport her.

Malinza groaned softly, her eyes closed, as Anakin tried to carry her a few steps, before leaning her up against a wall in the next room, his arms still wrapped around her. He knew what was going to happen if he died. Many of these pilots' sole reasons for staying with the Jedi was because Malinza told them so. But the Jedi hadn't been able to protect Malinza. They hadn't been able to save her.

This was when Anakin grew aware of Malinza's age. As he stared at her, as she coughed up blood in her throat as her body struggled to hang onto life, he realized something: Malinza was a girl. She couldn't be any older than seventeen, and yet, here she was, her potential and life wasted by her own side, by Bakurans.

Because of Anakin Solo.

Because of the Jedi.

Because of this stupid mission.

Because she had chosen to save Valin instead of running so she could save herself.

Because she had chosen the most difficult path in life, the path of the hero, instead of the path of the survivor.

Opening her eyes slightly, she looked at Anakin, or perhaps through him. "Oh come on, Anakin. I'm not your wife or anything." she whispered.

Anakin blinked, and became aware that tears were pouring out of his eyes. Wiping them away with his sleeve, he said "We'll get you help, Malinza. Just-"

She laughed briefly, one that was interuppted by a coughing fit. Looking at Anakin, she said "You know, those who say death doesn't hurt really . . . deserve to be shot. Just telling you to . . . write that down, somewhere . . . okay?"

"Malinza, don't talk like that. Please-"

Malinza suddenly stopped breathing, but she had enough air for final words. Her voice weakened and croaked with each word: "Anakin just tell . . . just tell Jysella I'm watching over her, all right? I'll . . . forever be . . . in her heart . . ." and suddenly she closed her eyes, and her head began leaning against the wall, leaning down as her body began to fall limp.

"No, Malinza!" Anakin shouted, contemplating what he could do. Come to think of it, there was one thing he could do . . . it was a long shot, but saving this young woman, an intelligent, strong leader, if there was any chance remaining, was worth the risk. Just to give her a right to find a life outside of combat. Just so she had one chance, only one chance . . .

You can't deny the Force, Anakin Solo. a peculiar, feminine voice said. The Force wants to take Commander Thanas. By denying the Force Commander Thanas you will kill another, and Thanas could still die. It is a choice that is not yours to make.

Get out of my mind, whoever you are. Anakin mentally shouted at the voice, and he placed his hands on the wound, and begged just for one more chance at giving Malinza Thanas life . . .

The voxyn began to hiss and howl, and the man grinned as he realized what was happening. He could almost see the miraculous event through the eyes of young Solo, he could see her begin to breathe as he knitted her blood vessels together, forced adrenaline to her heart, forcing it to beat, her lungs to rise, her blood to flow throughout her. As Solo repaired her, the man could sense his feelings, Solo's determination to not let what seemed to be a gifted young woman die.

There you are. You thought you could escape me. But your compassion has betrayed you, Solo. And now, I will not only find you, but slay you this time.

For good.

And the man began to set out on doing exactly that, summoning his voxyn and ordering the extra to head towards the docking bay with the female. They were to grab the shuttle and wait for their warmaster and his Jedi scalps.

He leapt from his porch. It was time to kill.

Valin's been discovered! I do hope that, for his sake, it can't be undone... I like the Horn family.

And are you killing off Malinza!

Great chapter! Thanks for the PM.

When it comes to who get killed (if indeed one has to die) and we had to choose between the two....
I vote we kill off Malinza. That is, after you promise me that Wynssa will not turn into Nssa A la McEwok...
shudders at the thought of Nssa.
Nssa, I still cry for thee...

Great update!

worried Bakura is in deep trouble...

I hope that they will be able to rescue Jys and Danni in time. praying

The ending with Malinza was really sad... unfortunately I think that Anakin should have just let her go, that warning he got was rather ominous.

looking forward to more!
