Ah, finally, something I haven't read. tongue

I especially liked the Jag part. Artran comes in second though. Great job! Glad someone finally found Valin out. Too bad it was someone too far away to expose him before he causes more trouble...

I'll send you a PM later. When I have more time. tongue

Aack, I'm so far behind. sad

But I peeked into this chapter and realize I've missed quite a lot. No fear. I'm going back to catch up on this story.

This chapter, just so you know, was great. Now Jag knows who the traitor is. I am afraid for Wyn to find out myself. She's going to be a basket case.

But if she does have to find out, I want it to be Valin who tells her.

I have hopes for Valin being helped. After all, he can't help what the Vong did to him. And Wyn of all people will understand that.

We'll see how that goes.

I'll come back with more replies when I've caught up.

G_Anakin:
Later!

Not sure what that's supposed to mean . . . I hope the chapter didn't bore you. worried

whiskers:

Valin's been discovered! I do hope that, for his sake, it can't be undone... I like the Horn family.

Maybe it can, maybe it can't. Right now, Valin first has to live before he finds out how much trouble he's in . . . devil

And are you killing off Malinza!

whistling

Great chapter! Thanks for the PM.

Thank you and no problem. happy

DARTH_MU:

When it comes to who get killed (if indeed one has to die) and we had to choose between the two....
I vote we kill off Malinza. That is, after you promise me that Wynssa will not turn into Nssa A la McEwok...
shudders at the thought of Nssa.
Nssa, I still cry for thee...

Your obsession with Wynssa is borderline disturbing . . . raised_brow but Draco and I have decided what's going to happen. So if someone's going to get killed off it's set in stone. And I'm not telling whether Wyn or Malinza is going to die . . . mischief

jaina_clan_solo:

Great update!

Thanks. grin

Bakura is in deep trouble...

Beyond deep . . . worried You'll find out how Bakura fares starting next week. devil

I hope that they will be able to rescue Jys and Danni in time.

It's all on Zekk's shoulders now. worried

The ending with Malinza was really sad... unfortunately I think that Anakin should have just let her go, that warning he got was rather ominous.

Well, Anakin's not the type to listen to creepy little voices in his head. tongue He might regret it this time, though.

looking forward to more!

26 will be up Tuesday. happy

Danni_Quee_Solo:

Ack! My Danni! My poor Danni! Her rescure delayed!!!!!!!!!! oh please please please please let them get to Danni( and jys ) on time!!!

Her rescue hasn't been delayed as much as her rescue party's been shortened. As I said, it's all up to Zekk right now. Anakin's group has their own problems, and Jaina has had to retreat.

...and killing of Malinza???????

Um, I thought I was making it clear she was still alive . . . blush

Can't wait for next post!!!

I can't wait to post it either it's a good one . . . devil

princess_of_naboo:

Ah, finally, something I haven't read.

The chapters are a lot fresher now aren't they? tongue

I especially liked the Jag part. Artran comes in second though. Great job! Glad someone finally found Valin out. Too bad it was someone too far away to expose him before he causes more trouble...

Amazing how things work don't they? angel

I'll send you a PM later. When I have more time.

You're not the only one whose time has been cut down by school. tired I hope to talk to you soon.

jasa:

I am glad Jag finally knows who the traitor is. I am excited to see what happens next.

Yeah, but will anyone believe Jag? worried There's definitely a lot that's gonna happen next . . . big battle ahead, let's just put it that way.

Lola64:

Aack, I'm so far behind.

No big deal. happy Glad you're still reading.

But I peeked into this chapter and realize I've missed quite a lot. No fear. I'm going back to catch up on this story.

Well, there's about five preceding chapters, although one was so long it had to be broken in two. So there's really six. But they hopefully won't take long to read.

This chapter, just so you know, was great. Now Jag knows who the traitor is. I am afraid for Wyn to find out myself. She's going to be a basket case.

You don't know the half of it. worried If Wyn finds out let's just say I wouldn't want to be Valin. beatup beatup

But if she does have to find out, I want it to be Valin who tells her.

I'm not sure that's such a good idea. beatup

I have hopes for Valin being helped. After all, he can't help what the Vong did to him. And Wyn of all people will understand that.

She just tried to shoot her own brother I'm not sure if she can be reasoned with. worried

We'll see how that goes.

Yes, we will. devil

I'll come back with more replies when I've caught up.

I'll be waiting. grin

Thanks for reading happy

In my opinion...
Wynssa Fel is everyone's little sister, the one thing that is sacred and untouchable.
I rather think she's the saving grace of the trilogy written by Sean Dix and Sean Williams.
Without her, that trilogy is a nightmare.
She will be all right with sanity restored... right? Right???? activates lightsaber and approaches Rebel Cheese RIGHT?

P.S.
That's not saying I won't regret Malinza dying. It's just that Wynssa is too innocent to not deserve a happy ending.
It's the one thing that is constant in Star Wars. Innocent little kids who can still live in peace despite the...
horror... the horror.

**draws twin lightsabers** Hey, hey, hey! Leave Mr. Cheese alone! He's following MY outline, remember?

And, if he changes it, I'll come after him with the Death Star.

And do you really think Wyn's still innocent? She's been (in this fic, anyway. She's kinda lost in the cosmos in canon) tortured for three months, left mentally unstable, and she's about to find out that the only person who she thought really cared about her has a Yuuzhan Vong slave seed stuck in the back of his head...

I don't think a happy ending is an option here. Bittersweet, maybe, but happy, NO...

I'm afraid I can't confirm or deny anything. You'll have to deal until the end of the fic.

P.S.

I don't exactly think Wyn's innocent anymore, like Draco says . . . sad

P.S.S

*draws double-bladed lightsaber* Constructive criticism is one thing, MU, but threatening and ordering ME, the WRITER, to do something you desire is entirely another thing. I'll let you off with a warning . . . THIS time.

Draconarius:

**draws twin lightsabers** Hey, hey, hey! Leave Mr. Cheese alone! He's following MY outline, remember?

He's right. mischief

And, if he changes it, I'll come after him with the Death Star.

You know, with friends like you who needs enemies? tongue Just kidding, Draco. I know what to do, and I haven't interfered . . . too much. tongue

As I said, I'm in complete agreement here. Wyn has a seriously screwed up life . . . no one can remain innocent with all of that for long.

I don't think a happy ending is an option here. Bittersweet, maybe, but happy, NO...

Probably true. But you never know. mischief

Danni_Quee_Solo:

That's reaaalllllyyyy depressing Draco....

It is, but it's also more realistic. Still, don't count out a happy ending, all right? There's still some hope left, not a lot, but some . . .

G_Anakin:

No I was just to tired to comprehend the chapter. I'll check up later!

Okay. wink I was just curious.

Glad you feel better. happy Of course, you might have a sinking feeling after reading this chapter . . . devil

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Outside a rather unremarkable, generic military compound, a war is being waged. There is a man, with a turqoise blade of fire, charging against an onrushing group of armed men, cutting them down in a dance of the sword. His long black hair flies through the air in individual strands, his clothing blows in the breezes he is creating. He is one in the Force, blinded by his love for the woman held captive.

The man's name is Zekk. And he loves Danni Quee Durron.

He rushes forward, cutting, slicing, spinning as he attacks and attacks. Human, P'w'eck, Kurtzen-the race of the opponent does not matter. Nor does the opponent's skill level. All are fairly low compared to Zekk's abilities. Their opposition can be considered mere blades of grass, ground ready to be trampled. And he does. Repeatedly, over and over.

Zekk cannot be stopped. Not while his inner fire continues to burn. Not while the fire consumes all of the fuel being arrayed around him. He reaches as his blaze continues to spread, as he heads towards the doors, his spinning deflections sending the automated turrets' shots right back at them, or even into Bakuran guards.

Zekk's comrades watch in awe. Zekk not only effortlessly scaled the walls of this compound, and took out the tower guards and turrets-but he was building a slaughterhouse inbetween the walls and the building. He had even found the time to open the door, so Farina Kells and her two subordinates could enter and give what little assistance they needed to give.

More fuel is added to Zekk's fire. In his mind, he envisions the pregnant Danni, her belly starting to grow with new life, at gunpoint. The gun is pointed at her head--no, at her stomach--where the gun will kill her baby instead of her. He sees the little girl, Jysella Horn, her eyes wide open, horrified, traumatized, filled with tears, staring at Danni's corpse. Jysella's little hands spread to her mouth, in an effort to stifle the scream.

The blaze swirls. Soon, it envelops all. Soon, all is dead quiet outside of the compound doors, save for the hum of the lightsaber and the labored breathing of the four attackers. Zekk stares up ahead, towards the compound door. A quick glance through his gift called the Force tells him that it is locked tight.

No matter. Zekk, instead of a fire, unleashes a tempest, and he fires the swirling wind channeled by the mind straight towards that door, and the doors beyond. The door instantly implodes and flies off its hinges, and travels further. It collides into other doors, taking them as well. It takes out guards positioned outside the doors ready to ambush.

The entrance becomes a battering ram, and it does so much more than batter. It demoralizes. It renders those who survive this display hopeless, as they realize they cannot stop the shadow that is approaching them. It removes all pretenses of security, as doors double, triple-locked and fortified break open all too easily. Gun turrets positioned behind the doors shatter and break as the doors take them as well.

Zekk is a Jedi Knight in love. And all inside the compound are discovering that one should never attempt to remove the love of a Jedi Knight.

Zekk had failed, or had been forced by circumstances to fail, countless people. Friends, allies, past loves. He would not fail Danni Quee at the very least. This time, no matter what the personal cost, he was going to be there for someone he cared for.

He steps inside the entrance he had created. Whatever exhaustion he has from this fearsome display becomes forgotten. He is the inferno again. And as the flesh-and-blood guards panic and fearfully raise their rifles to desperately shoot the dark-haired man who is approaching them, Zekk begins to envelop them as well.

He will not fail, because he will not even consider it. Only success. He will only see success today.

And so he begins his dance of death once again, and the elegant, glorious, fiery weapon he wields becomes the accessary once more.

The process begins once again.
________________________________________________________________________

Kittasallia 'Kitty' Charlas was thirty-five, gifted with a youthful appearence, captain of the Requiem, and pissed. As usual, a higher-up was not listening to her advice. And, Kitty bet, this was going to cost the allies yet another world. As usual.

"I've noted your observations, Captain Charlas." the gruff, worn voice of Johnarath Ducaris said. Ducaris haf a bushy white mustache that gave him a fatherly appearence, and his close-cropped white hair was scarcely visible underneath the white naval cap of the allied navy.

"But they haven't instigated a strike yet. They seem to be merely reorganizing. I'll raise the fleet's alert status, but that's it. I cannot condone making another panic like the one that happened a month ago after Endor fell. The people need to know that we can protect them, and that there is no need to flee." he said, his tone of voice reasonable but his words anything but.

"We need to start a civilian evacuation, sir." Kitty rarely wore her own naval cap, but she felt a need to seem respectful of Ducaris. It would not do to anger the man in charge of the Bakuran navy. But it was turning out that this minor precaution hadn't mattered. Ducaris was not completely convinced, and no amount of persuasion was going to convince him otherwise.

"I really don't like repeating myself, Captain, so please stop asking me questions you've already heard my answers to. Right now, this is the Prime Minister's orders-we cannot start an evacuation without his consent."

It was all Kitty could keep from screaming. "Then get it, sir. I don't like this. It reminds me too much of their takeover at Denon."

That got Ducaris' attention. He stared at Charlas quizzedly, and then asked "Continue, Captain. Explain this to me."

"Gladly, sir." Kitty said. At last, she was making some sort of progress. "In fact, it mirrors that assault almost entirely. Instead of concentrating their forces on the day side, they are going after the night. Instead of heading left, their concentrating on the right. This is an exact copy of Warmaster Kharran's Denon strategy, only in reverse. And it's working, sir. He's lured us into a sense of security, just like the poor souls that were at Denon."

Ducaris, to his credit, listened to this quietly and patiently. When Charlas finished, he nodded. "It is somewhat familiar, at least. I'll try to get Harris' attention, in the meantime, I will begin preparing the defenses. Hold your position on our left flank, and keep an eye on the groups splintering your direction."

"But, sir-" Kitty had won one victory today, but she had probably lost one other-evacuating the civilians. "Sir," she repeated after clearing her throat, "we have to start an evacuation now, before they encircle us. While the civilians have a shot at escaping."

"And I'm saying I can't authorize it, Captain. Not without Harris' permission."

Kitty held a curse back. Couldn't this fool think outside the book just this once? "But the window of opportunity is closing, sir! If we don't evacuate the civilians now it's going to happen while they're under heavy Vong fire, and interfere with our defense!" She left the meaning silent. Hopefully Ducaris would figure it out.

Ducaris sighed, and Kitty knew she had pushed as far as she could go. "Captain Charlas, please. Just stay in position and keep an eye out on the Vong. I'll send the message to Harris, as I said, and we'll await for instructions. Now please, enough. Captain Charlas, you were lucky enough to win the lottery for the ship you command, don't make me revoke it because of insolence." he said exasperatedly.

"I understand, sir." Imbecile. she added, thankfully as a thought. Somehow she was able to keep all signs of irritation off of her face, although her hands were clenched into fists and were shaking as if she was in a blizzard. Thankfully, Ducaris couldn't see that. At least, Kitty didn't hope so.

"Good." Ducaris' pleasent demeanor returned, and he said "You're a competent commander, Captain Charlas. You deserve your new assignment. But really, I have to go. It seems you are not the only one who has been concerned . . . Admiral Ducaris out." Johnarath Ducaris' face vanished then, and Kitty sighed.

"He's not going to do it, is he?" Commander Arthur Demela said. A man thirty-three years old, he served as the commander of the Requiem's armaments, including the vaunted Sledgehammer cannons. He was a rather tall man, roughly six feet, and was thickly-muscled. He looked more like a boot camp sergeant than a naval commander.

Kitty sighed. "No, he won't. He relies too much on the book." she said, removing her cap and placing it at her side. She had half a mind to go over to the gym and vent some of this stress out on the punching bag, but she knew better, especially with the Vong moving like this. A captain needed to be at the bridge during this situation.

Demela nodded. He walked down the stairs then, heading towards the armaments station located below the captain's chair.

The bridge was laid out in an organized fashion, with the captain's chair elevated above the rest of the room, the armaments located below it, and the pilots at the front of the ship. Two naval officers also sat at stations above the armaments, a radio listener and another who kept track of ships during a battle.

"Petty Officer Meirrs, update on the enemy movements." Kitty said after a moment.

Petty Officer Stercy Meirrs, a woman twenty-three years old with close-cropped blonde hair, answered "They're splitting up into their standard groups formation. Our sensors and cameras haven't been able to find which groups are what, though."

"Then do that. I want to know what exactly is being arrayed against us. And find the Sunslayer!" Kitty replied, almost as an afterthought.

If their Yun-Yuuzhan Battle Group is heading this way, I might be able to take a few ships with us and launch an ambush on the Sunslayer. It hasn't worked before, but then again we've never had the Requiem. We might be able to force it to withdraw at least. Kitty thought.

"My readings say that there's one group in reserve, two groups heading across our flank, one group in the center, and one final group to our right. It seems they're making a pincer movement, Captain." Meirrs said a moment later.

Just like Denon. Kitty thought with a sigh that was becoming all too common these days. Denon had been destroyed after Bakura was sucked into this war. She had been there, as the recently minted captain of the Challenger. She had seen Denon explode as its moon slammed into the surface, transforming Denon into little more than an asteroid field.

Then Chief Petty Officer Chad Neumann intervened. "I've got radio transmissions from all over the fleet. The Vong are entering their ring formation!"

"The ring formation . . .?" The Vong had done that at Mon Calamari. After Denon, Warmaster Kharran had attacked with a fleet twice the strength of the Denon-killing fleet. The Vong fleet had formed a nearly invincible ring around the Mon Calamari defenders, squeezing and crushing them without any chance of break-out. For good measure, the Vong burned the planet in the process, boiling all of the water and making Calamari lifeless.

So, I was wrong. The ring formation is the absolute worst thing. It seems Kharran wants to make sure we're finished off. Kitty thought.

Then again, Mon Calamari didn't have the Requiem. Kitty added. The Requiem was supposed to be head-and-shoulders above the rest of the fleet. This seemed to be a good test of its true capabilities.

Then Neumann shouted "Transmission from Ducaris to the entire fleet! I'm bring it up now." Neumann pressed a couple of buttons on his console, and Ducaris' voice echoed throughout the cabin. Kitty quickly realized that this was a preprogrammed message, Ducaris would not have sounded this in-control in this situation. Nor would have had time to speak as eloquently and clearly as he did now.

"To all combatants in the Galactic Alliance fleet, the Yuuzhan Vong have decided that they're not satisfied. They still want more blood to spill. They will have their blood spilled all over space, but it won't be ours! We have the largest fleet in either the New Republic's or Galactic Alliance's history! We have Bothans! We have Bakura! We have the Imperials, the Hapans, the Chiss, the Calamarians, all fighting together! This is where the Vong will find they have stretched themselves too far!"

Then, suddenly, the message clicked off, and a harried voice appeared. It was also Ducaris, but this time the message appeared to be the real thing. The rather awkward switch from a patriotic speech to Ducaris' exhausted, stressed orders proved that. "Everyone, they're using their ring formation. We will be using Defense Plan Echo-Bravo-Gamma-Zulu. Hold your ground and look for opportunities to hit them hard. We will use whatever mistakes against them. The reason why Calamari fell was because we held still. Now we will remain mobile. Do whatever it takes to win. There is no turning back from here, our backs are against the cliffside. The only place to go is forward. That is all, everyone. Heavenspeed." and then Ducaris' comlink clicked off.

Kitty stared for a second, and then Meirrs shouted "I have coralskipper launches! I have identified the groups Yun-Harla and Yun-Q'aah, they're arraying themselves in front of us. Yun-Yammka is heading up the center, and Yun-Txiin is attacking our right flank. There is one group in reserve, it has to be Yun-Yuuzhan."

And the Sunslayer, Kitty reminded herself. Fine with her. She didn't want the Requiem's first test to be against the ship the Requiem was supposedly designed to kill.

Then, as the sensory board on her console blinked to life and revealed the massive sea of red beginning to swarm the cool blue, Kitty's mind switched. No more contemplation. Only command. Only decisions. This was where she could finally prove herself as being truly worthy of this ship, and her talented crew. To all of those she was fortunate enough to call friends.

Her voice called out, booming, authoritive. "Everyone at Stage 1 battle stations! Launch all squadrons! Neumann, get in touch with Commander Thanas and tell her to get her behind off Bakura and back up here!" she shouted.

"On it, ma'am." Neumann said, and his fingers immediately began tapping the keyboard as he searched for Malinza's radio number.

"Ensigns Hilday and Jospen, prepare for evasive action, Make sure the space around us is clear."

"Understood." Hilday's young voice responded, and Kitty felt the ship's soft, slow acceleration as the ship prepared for battle. Already, she could see the lights of starfighter engines rushing forwards, heading for the coralskippers attacking the fleet like agitated hornets.

"Commander Demela?" she said a moment later, pondering what words to say.

"Yes, ma'am?" Demela said, his face reappearing from the station below as he spoke.

Kitty, for a reason she couldn't discern, felt her face form a small smile. "Ready the Sledgehammers, Commander. Let the scarheads have it."

Demela grinned too. "Yes, ma'am!" he said enthuseastically and he rushed back down to his station.

The smallest blue dots, representing the nimble Daggers, the older X-wings, the powerful Scorchers, the ancient V-wings, and any other fighter the Alliance could scrape up, began to entangle with the red wave. And then the two waves began to fly through each other, each side more interested in the bigger prey of starships. Red passed through blue, and vice versa, a prelude to when the bigger ships at last collided.

The battle at last had begun in earnest. And, finally, Kitty had the tools available to finally give the Vong some payback for all the pain they had given the galaxy.

Mom, Dad, Syske, this is for all of you. she thought, thinking of her long-dead family as the Requiem entered optimum firing range for not one, not two, but three enemy vessels.

"Sledgehammers, fire!" she ordered, and moments later the ship rocked with the recoil of both 300-metre sledgehammer cannons. Gigantic, yellow-white beams illuminated the darkness of space, screaming towards the Vong battle lines, vanishing after a moment of existence.

Then, suddenly Demela shouted "We hit all three of them! We blew the kriffing rodders up!" to a chorus of cheers and whoops.

Kitty took a deep breath, and closed her eyes for a second, and let herself briefly relax. Finally, she knew for certain. Even throughout the successful trials, there had always been a shadow of doubts lingering about the Requiem's capabilities. No more. She knew what this ship could do, now. They could do this. The Requiem was finally going to give Kittasallia Charlas the tools necessary for not only vengeance, but to save everyone else in this ravaged galaxy.

Then Ensign Jospen shouted "We've got enemy fighters inbound!"

Kitty opened her eyes again, and let the sensation and thrill of the battle control her again. "In front of us?"

"Yes. They got through the friendlies." Jospen said, and then Kitty saw them coming, as the little dots began firing their red magma bolts straight at the Requiem.

"Power up the antistarfighter turrents!! I want no coralskipper getting in range!" Kitty ordered. Back to the battle, now. In this war, one minor victory meant nothing. Not until there were enough to force a real win.

Denn Jerrevickk was quickly realizing that maybe he had made a mistake. The raw power of the dark-haired Jedi as he walked throughout his facility, his base, at will, made him regret not killing him back at the condominium. But there had been too much fire from those Vong spies, plus the presence of another Jedi to consider. He had no chance of killing either Valin Horn or the one called 'Zekk' back at the condo.

Now it was only Zekk, with Valin hopefully detained elsewhere, but Denn was wondering whether he had met his match nevertheless. The way Zekk blew through his traps, like they were mere toys to crush or glass to break, was slowly making Denn worry.

Denn had been doing a lot of worrying lately, from that strange Yuuzhan Vong spy to this Jedi Knight's one-man raid on an elite special-forces battalion. He was sick of it. He wanted to just relax for once, in the knowledge that he was going to win.

Another camera went dead. The computer immediately changed feeds, to reveal another door being blown off by the Force. The door slammed into a cadre of guards, and the door was blown into the wall, crushing everyone caught in the path.

How could this be happening? When he joined the Peace Brigade he was promised that he was on the winning side! That he wouldn't be killed like the galaxy's defenders! That he was taking the easy road, the safe road, the rewarding road.

He was on the winning side, all right, he knew that much. But he was going to die, and die painfully, like his men, unless he thought of a plan. Fast. Before he wound up with a lightsaber at his throat. And he knew that the Jedi would show no mercy towards Denn Jerrevickk. The Jedi would be too berserk to be dissuaded against killing him.

Not unless Denn changed the rules of the game. Quickly.

But what to do? With each door the Jedi broke down, that was another door closer to Denn's. Another door closer to having his head or arm sliced off. Or perhaps have his windpipe crushed. Or the Jedi would pinch a nerve in his brain, or shut his heart off, or something else undoubtedly painful involving death. Denn couldn't say that he liked any of those possibilities.

But that was exactly what was going to happen to him unless he thought of something. But what? He eyed his two captives, the girl named Jysella and the pregnant one, Danni Quee. How was he going to be able to turn either one in to the scarheads unless he could stop this Jedi?

Then he thought of something. It was desperate, and he knew he would likely regret it, but it was a plan. Without consideration of alternatives, Denn chose this plan and walked over. Quee looked up at him, her eyes defiant, despite the bruises and welts she had accumulated during the gun battle at Escarto. Then he eyed the girl, Jysella. The child's blue eyes looked half-dead, and decades older than the rest of her body. Jysella was a defeated soul, not a useful hostage who would scream, cry, plead, and shout. Not what Denn wanted.

Besides, Quee was pregnant. Maybe he could think of something useful for Quee. So he made his choice. Let them briefly rescue the kid. Once he was through, he would have the child back. And then the spy would have the girl he was so interested in, Denn didn't care. Denn just wanted a return to normalcy, or as normal as things could possibly be under the new masters.

Maybe he would get it. Maybe he wouldn't. He wasn't so sure he cared anymore. All he wanted was survival.

He finally spoke. "Get up, Quee, We're leaving. Now. I'm taking you to a special place."

"No." Quee growled.

Denn sighed. Not what he wanted. "You will do what I say, Quee. Now. Before I get angry."

"Forget it. You can't win, Commander Jerrevickk. Zekk is coming, I can feel him. And he will kill you." Danni said, a small smile appearing on her swelling face.

Denn nearly lost it then. If he didn't get the woman to move Zekk was going to come and carve him into shreds! He didn't want to be just another nameless casualty made by the Jedi. He was not supposed to die like this, trying to force a pregnant woman to move when her lover comes . . .

Wait . . . she was pregnant. Suddenly, Denn feels the word echoing throughout his brain. Now he had an idea. Now he knew what he could do, besides pathetically threatening to shoot the woman.

"Move or I shoot the baby."

"What?" Quee's eyes lit up in anger, and she stared up at Denn in disbelief.

"I said, move before I shoot your stomach, Jedi. I know you have a baby in there. Normally, the shot would kill you in an instant. But . . . the baby would save your life, Jedi, at the cost of itself. All this effort your body's putting into creating new life will go to waste . . . and you may never be able to have kids again." The viciousness in his voice startled Denn, he was not used to sounding this way. But he was desperate. And he was going to get out of here anyway possible.

"You monster! How dare you!" Quee hissed, her hands instantly covering her stomach.

"Yeah, I get that a lot. Now get up and let's go. I have a special place for you." Denn said, as he saw Zekk break down another door. He was not far from this room, now, and armed resistence was thinning out. It would not be long before Zekk got into this room, with the three cronies he brought hanging back.

Quee just glared at him. Denn powered up the blaster pistol and aimed it at Danni's stomach. "Do it. Or your precious baby dies." One his eyes peered towards the girl, seeing is the seven-year-old was stupid enough to rush him. But Jysella seemed to be in her own little world now, isolated and unreachable from this one. And that was perfectly fine with Denn Jerrevickk.

"I'll make you pay for this. I swear." Quee snarled, her eyes reddening with her tears, her voice a bitter snap.

"I'd like to see you try without losing your baby, Jedi." Denn said, eager to keep the threat to her baby implanted in Quee's mind.

"Bastard." she hissed.

"Thanks." he replied sarcastically and hurriedly as another broken door, a big one this time, was echoing in the distance. He didn't have a lot of time, not when that Jedi was on his tail . . .
________________________________________________________________________

Love can be the greatest motivator in life, alongside greed and hatred. While Zekk had a certain hatred for the Yuuzhan Vong, Danni Quee was the reason he kept charging down the corridors of this place. Love was the reason why he continued to move.

Sweat was pouring down his face, and he constantly had to shake his head back to shove his sweaty bangs out of his eyes. His hands gripped his lightsaber so hard he could almost bend the metal, and his arms and legs cried out for rest.

He couldn't rest, not yet. Not until Danni and Jysella were safe. He owed Valin for that rescue in Escarto, and he simply . . . loved Danni Quee. It had been sympathetic pangs at first, after Kyp had died . . . but now that love was becoming something more. Once he found her, he would tell her how much he cared. About how much he loved her.

His headache had only gotten worse throughout this run towards Danni's signature in the Force. He could sense her moving, or, more accurately, being moved. She was still alive, but Zekk could sense fear and anger eminating off of her. Her pirouettes in the Force were only growing darker, and Zekk sensed that Danni was only getting angrier.

His love could not go to the dark side. Not now. He had touched the darkness several times, and he didn't want to do that again. Not even through the Force signature of Danni Quee.

I'm coming, Danni. Just a little longer, all right? I'm almost there. His mind was exhausted now, so he simply sliced a massive hole into the next door, cut it down, and then shot it down the hall, hoping it would collect any ambushers. Armed resistance had grown sparse the last several minutes, but he was not going to take any chances, not while he had come this far. Not after he had to kill and wound so many people.

As he stepped through the hole, there was no one. He apparently had run the gauntlet here, except for whoever was moving Danni. But there were more doors to open here, all on the right side.

He didn't have enough strength to open them all, not after being run ragged since the first confrontation outside Escarto Condominiums. He made a brief search through the force, and detected one of the two presences he was searching for behind the second door on the right. Walking over, he cut his way through the door, and carefully opened the door a moment later, to find Jysella Horn.

She was just sitting there, withdrawn from the world. She didn't even look up at him. When Zekk walked in front of her, extinguishing his lightsaber, she stared right through him, without any acknowledgement. Zekk bent down and looked into her cold, dead, faded eyes and quickly realized that something had happened to Jysella. Something bad.

"Jysella?" he asked carefully.

That was when she finally woke up. Looking around the room, she asked "Zekk?"

"You all right?" he asked finally. She was looking at him now, but when he saw the grey fog in her eyes, he realized what had happened to Jysella.

"You've been blinded, haven't you?" he asked, simply.

"I can't see . . . they flashed something into my eyes. Everything's dark, I can't see, I can't see anything. Why can't I see, Zekk?" Jysella moaned softly.

Zekk frowned, and he looked down the hallway, towards Danni's signature. He knew who must have done this to Jysella. Why she couldn't see. He had a feeling that Danni's captor had blinded Jysella.

"I know it's you, but . . . I don't know why." Jysella said as she looked around the room.

"It's the Force. You can feel people out of the Force." Zekk answered, forcing his hateful feelings down. He couldn't let Jysella feel them, no seven-year-old deserved to be exposed to hate like ths.

"You knocked open the door, didn't you?" Jysella asked.

"Um . . . yeah." Zekk admitted bashfully. Looking back at the wreckage, he added "No one gave me a key."

"Where's everyone else? Please tell me they came. Please tell me Valin's here somewhere." she begged, and she stared at him now, and Zekk suddenly felt a soft Force touch, as she felt him out and then backed off, having confirmed his identity for good.

"Valin . . . fell behind. He's with Anakin, though. He's in good hands. Now let's get you out of here-" then suddenly Zekk realized he really couldn't do that, not with Danni still out there, captured, possibly in pain, elsewhere in the facility. But he couldn't very well take a blinded girl over to rescue Danni as well. As he picked Jysella up with one of his hands, he found the answer to his dilemma a moment later.

Farina Kells ran into the room a moment later, looking even more exhausted than Zekk thought he felt. Her two squadmates entered a moment later, and one said "I think I'm gonna throw up." as he bent down towards the ground.

"Nice little run." Farina said, trying to remain dignified despite her exhaustion and appearence. Zekk smiled, then handed Jysella over to Farina.

Farina took the girl with a surprised face, and Zekk said "I have to get Danni. Go back to the speeder and wait for me if you can."

"But-"

"No buts, Lieutenant Commander. You've got part of your objective, and I'll get the other half. Now be careful. You too, Jysella," Zekk added, looking at the girl as he spoke.

Jysella smiled, but even though her eyes looked elsewhere, Zekk knew she was looking at him nevertheless, through the Force. "I will, Uncle Zekk."

Zekk instantly felt himself flush, and he said "Um, just, um . . . stay close to Farina all right? I uh . . . have to get our friend . . . Danni. Okay? I'll come back."

"All right." Jysella nodded vigoriously.

"Great." Zekk said, and rubbed Jysella's hair briefly before turning around and walking down the hall. Taking several deep breaths, he began to walk away when Farina's voice echoed from down the hall.

"Be careful, all right?" Farina shouted.

"I will. Just take care of Jysella. I said I'll come back. I promise I will." Zekk said.

Farina nodded, and she and her squadmates vanished around the nearest corner a moment later. Zekk took another deep breath and exhaled. At least he had saved someone today. At least all of his efforts hadn't gone to waste.

But there was still someone out there. Danni. He still needed to get Danni. Taking off down the corridor, the lights began to flicker. Soft rumbles began. What's happening? he thought.

Then, as Danni's stress quadrupled in the Force, Zekk shook that thought out of his head. He had to get to Danni. He had no choice. No matter what was happening outside, he would get to Danni at any cost, no matter how much of a price he had to pay.

He ran down the darkened-and-lit corridor as fast as he could, just hoping he still had a few seconds. Just a few would be all that he needed. As Danni reached out for him, he reassured her through the Force. I'm coming. he told her.

Running down through the corridor, Danni's signature grew strong, so strong Zekk knew he was close . . . and when he turned the corner he saw a sight he never thought he'd see.

Danni. A Bakuran army commander. One of the men who had taken part in the Escarto raid, Zekk realized. The major turned around, and Zekk suddenly saw that the major had a pistol aimed at Danni's head.

"Don't move. Or she dies. Right here." the commander growled, and for the first time so far, Zekk wondered what he was going to do.
