Mara was being brutally honest with him, and he wasn't receptive to hearing it. Maybe Luke needs to go get that drink from Bruno now. Perhaps getting some of the same advice from an outsider would sink in more.

Great emotional chapter!

It was on her fifteenth day in the darkness of the Nirauan cave when Mara Jade awoke to discover a rescuer had finally arrived.
It was not, however, any of the potential rescuers she would have expected.
It was Luke.

applause Wow--wonderful post here!!!

“I won’t make the mistakes he did. I won’t yield to the dark side. Never, Mara.” Luke’s irritation was obvious now.
“You say that, but you don’t know--” she started.
“Yes, I do. There’s nothing more to say on this topic. My stand on this has been very clear.”

No, Luke, you really don't know.

These things needed to be said. The saying of them was like ripping off a bandage, but now that they've been said Luke will think about it all. I just hope that he and Mara can work things out once Luke has processed everything.

Awesome job with this chapter! applause applause applause Lot of intricate emotions and tensions going on and the dialogue remains completely realistic and plausible throughout.

They both have a lot to learn about each other and being in a relationship, it seems. Good thing they've got friends who might be able to offer some insight. rose

(And I really like the changes you made! wink )

Looking forward to a make-up scene at some point. I hope. batting

Ah, pride and arrogance. It's extremely interesting if you look throughout Star Wars "history" how much damage those two attributes cause. The Order's pride and arrogance in itself and its members in themselves allowed them to be blindsided by Palpatine; pride and arrogance were the primary factors in Revan's, Anakin Skywalker's, and Jacen Solo's falls to darkness; arrogance also blinded Palpatine, leading to his defeat.

Even if Mara's opinion of Luke's Force use was wrong, his attitude alone shows him unknowingly mimicing his father and treading far closer to the dark side than he thinks.

The chapter was brilliant. Although, I think there was one point Mara could've made that might have penetrated Skywalker's mind. She could've pointed out that when he was using the Force as his first solution to his problems, he was taking the quick and easy path...

I think you are doing a marvelous job with this fic. The sections containing the challenge words were particularly auspicious and you weaved them into the story brilliantly.

It's hard (for me) to imagine a Luke & Mara courtship taking place under such relatively benign conditions, and yet the familiarity of the situation makes the story so easy to relate to. The dialog is felicitous to their characters, and the way you handled the "fight" at the end was very convincing.

Whatever happens now, I hope Luke finally learns from his mistakes. Right now he barely deserves to call himself a Master, let alone pursue a relationship with Mara.

An Alliance at Alida’s Part 11 replies:

Jade_Pilot: I can't help but think that Mara can dish it out, but not take it. Although Luke had stopped listening as well.

Thank you very much! You’re right in your assessment. They have valid points to make in order to make their relationship work, but they don’t know the angle they have to use to approach the conversation. thinking

Walker_of_minds: I look forward to reading more and how the two work it out. Luke being stubborn I think ah when emtions are high it is hard to see.

Thanks! Yes, sometimes it’s hard to hear the words when you are emotionally stressed. worried

Ginchy: Oh, dear. It has to be said, but it's hard for Luke to hear. He's not quite ready to hear it yet. He and Mara can sure wound one another when they want to.

That’s very true. They each know the other’s weak areas. But that’s the risk you take when you share everything in your heart. love

Terrific update in showing that it's not all smooth sailing yet...

Not quite yet! But once the hard part is overcome, then they will be closer than ever. hugs Thank you for your support!

Jade_eyes: I can't decide if it was right for Mara to call Luke on his not listening right off--I'm glad she did, but that probably didn't make him open up on the inside, though it appeared on the outside that he was.

Mara wants things to be clear, but she sure took the wrong approach to get her message across! shame_on_you

I agreed 200 percent with every single thing she said. Once you start doing all the wrong things for the right reasons, it's not too far of a baby step to doing the wrong things and not caring what the reasons are.

She has seen it firsthand. Unfortunately, Luke is too upset to really hear what she is saying. not_talking

Emotional doors have been slammed and I don't know what can open them up again. Both are cussed stubborn.

But both of them feel something for the other. Which will be stronger, love or pride? love Thank you so much!

RedGold: Not quite square one, but they have to reassess what their relationship means. Thank you for your kind reply! happy

Valiowk: Ouch, those were harsh words handed out by both Luke and Mara!

They care deeply about their beliefs, and they feel attacked when someone tries to point out a weakness. shame_on_you

Loved your analysis of Luke's dependence on the Force in this chapter, and the way Mara tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to point it out. They still have some way to go...

Yes, there is still a way to go. They have learned to trust – can they learn to forgive? love Thank you very much for your reply!

Jedi-2B: Mara was being brutally honest with him, and he wasn't receptive to hearing it. Maybe Luke needs to go get that drink from Bruno now.

Thank you! I’m happy you liked this. Mara is not one for subtleties, and Luke feels threatened by her words. Now they have to rebuild. rolling_eyes

Blue_Milkshake: These things needed to be said. The saying of them was like ripping off a bandage, but now that they've been said Luke will think about it all. I just hope that he and Mara can work things out once Luke has processed everything.

They will have to move to a new stage in their relationship, one where they can forgive the other for making mistakes. But they have a lot of love already built between them. Thank you for your thoughtful reply! love

JadeLotus: Now if only they can find a common ground and listen to one another...

Love needs to find a way, doesn’t it? wink Thanks!

Jedi_Trace: Lot of intricate emotions and tensions going on and the dialogue remains completely realistic and plausible throughout. They both have a lot to learn about each other and being in a relationship, it seems. Good thing they've got friends who might be able to offer some insight.

Alida and Bruno have said and done things that have hurt each other, but they learned that love was more important than feeling slighted. They can teach Mara and Luke how to see beyond the hurtful words. hugs

Thank you again for all your help, Jedi_Trace rose !

Dyslecksec: It's extremely interesting if you look throughout Star Wars "history" how much damage those two attributes cause. Even if Mara's opinion of Luke's Force use was wrong, his attitude alone shows him unknowingly mimicing his father and treading far closer to the dark side than he thinks.

Her assessment was that he was depending on the Force too much because before he had depended on his own skills too much. He needed to find a balance. Now if only they could find a balance in their own relationship! angel Thank you for your reply!

Klimt_of_Tornesdal: I can't help but be reminded of what Obi Wan said to Anakin before they dueled on Mustafar: Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

No one can make things work alone. We all need people to help us, even Jedi masters. Luke heard the words she said, but he has to get past her unfortunate way of presenting the argument in order to understand the point she was trying to make. hugs

Jedi_Scribe: It's hard (for me) to imagine a Luke & Mara courtship taking place under such relatively benign conditions, and yet the familiarity of the situation makes the story so easy to relate to.

Thank you! I never quite bought the “Then they Force-bonded and fell in love!” idea. There had to be something more going on in the background. thinking

Whatever happens now, I hope Luke finally learns from his mistakes. Right now he barely deserves to call himself a Master, let alone pursue a relationship with Mara.

Luke is intelligent enough to recognize that Mara had a fair point to make. He needs to cool down, and then think things through. Hopefully they will learn how to disagree without hurting each other. hugs Thank you very much for the reply!

Oh, wow! I just stumbled across this fic and I really like it. You seem to have Luke and Mara down pat. Very lovely characterizations.

I loved that last chapter. Mara's right; sometimes Luke can be a little thick-headed. I especially loved this line: Did it ever occur to you that maybe it was the will of the Force to send people like me, and Leia, and Corran, and everyone else into your life to help you? To show you when you’re starting to go astray? That caught me, for some reason. Mara can be so insightful. grin

Love what you're doing with this challenge. Very nice.

Please continue this!

Jade_Eyes: Yes, they are stubborn. But once they figure this crazy love thing out, they will be just as stubborn in their love for each other! love

Walker_of_minds: Thank you so much! That’s very kind of you to say. happy

Jade_Naberrie: Thank you for the thoughtful reply. I’m pleased that the characterizations seem “right” to you. Mara always seemed to know what it was that Luke needed, even if he didn’t know himself. (And vice versa, of course!) wink

Presenting:

An Alliance at Alida’s ~Part the Twelfth: Learning the Leniency of Love

Thank you, Jedi_Trace, for another terrific beta! rose

Author’s note: To keep in the spirit of the original challenge, I used 30 SAT words: Labyrinth, Lackluster, Laceration, Laconic, Lampoon, languidly, Lassitude, Latent, Laudable, Lavish, legitimate, Lethal, Lethargic, Levity, levy, Listless, liberal, liberate, linchpin, limitation, litany, literally, lithe, Litigate, loathe, livid, lobby, Lucid, ludicrous, and lurid.

Han put down his glass and turned to greet the young man who approached the bar, his lassitude a sharp contrast against the levity of the establishment’s other patrons. As Luke sat down, Han motioned for the bartender.

“Bruno, my buddy here needs a drink,” Han announced. Gesturing to his own half-empty tumbler, he added, “And I need a little something to help me get him out of this ludicrously gloomy mood he’s been inflicting on us lately.”

Luke sighed and listlessly dragged a hand through his hair. “Good try, Han. But nothing you can do will help.”

Bruno pursed his lips sympathetically as he placed a tumbler of amber liquid in front of Han. “Luke? What would you like to drink?” he asked.

Luke looked up. “Just a flavored water, please. The usual stuff.”

Bruno nodded and went to the cooler to retrieve it. Han waited until the muscular bartender was out of earshot. “Kid, you look like week-old bantha dung in the dry season,” Han announced laconically.

“Thanks, Han,” Luke retorted.

Han put both elbows on the bar and leaned in. “Seriously, though. Where have you been these last three weeks? Leia is worried sick about you.”

“I’ve been working. She knows that.”

“Yeah, but this is more than working. You don’t come over, you have nothing to say when she comms you.” Han narrowed his eyes. “The last time you retreated like this was when you and--”

“Han, I’m okay. You don’t have to take care of me. I’m a grown man,” Luke interrupted.

Han glanced sideways at Luke, then took another sip of his drink. Bruno approached with a bottle of light green liquid and began to pour a liberal amount into a tall glass.

Han turned toward the bartender as he finished serving Luke’s beverage. “Bruno, what would you do if someone you knew were to suddenly act strange? Like someone who had been pretty happy began being incredibly cranky and had no explanation for it?”

Bruno put down the bottle, stepped back, and rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “Well, I guess I would first decide if it was any of my business to investigate.”

“Suppose it was really important that you did. Like, your life literally depended on finding out the reason,” Han pressed.

Luke rolled his eyes. “Your life doesn’t literally depend on this,” he groused.

Han snorted again. “You don’t live with Leia,” he said, shaking his head ominously.

Bruno smiled slightly. “In that case, I would begin with identifying when this change occurred and try to determine a possible initiation event. If there was no obvious trigger, the behavior might be a latent response to an earlier event.”

Han and Luke both looked blankly at Bruno, then exchanged a glance. Bruno sighed. “All right. How long have you been feeling like this, Luke?” he asked dryly.

“I really appreciate your interest, guys,” Luke said. “But I have it under control.”

“If that’s the case, then why is Leia up all night because you’re too agitated to sleep? You know, if you can’t sleep, she can’t sleep. And if she can’t sleep, she tosses and turns and takes all the covers and then that’s it for me. Then, ‘cause I’m too tired, I get all snippy with Chewie, who gets in a bad mood and starts liberating limbs from innocent bystanders. Then we have to deal with the litigation, and, well, you see?” Han threw up his hands in protest. “It’s all a tragic chain of events.”

Luke stared at his brother-in-law. “She set you up to this, didn’t she?” he asked. “Her intentions are laudable, but really, I can handle myself.”

“And what am I gonna tell Leia when I come home empty-handed? ‘Sorry, sweetheart, he said mind your own business?’ Yeah, that’ll go over really well,” Han complained. “Just tell me and let’s figure out an answer to whatever is bothering you, then we can all be happy again.”

Luke shook his head miserably. He sighed, then said flatly, “Mara and I had a fight. She hasn’t spoken to me since.” He bowed his head slightly and stared blankly at the polished surface.

Han rolled his eyes and shook his head, then downed the remainder of his drink in one swallow. “Mara. Of course.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Luke asked sharply.

“You and Mara fighting? That’s a lethal pursuit,” Han mused. “Why don’t you just comm her? You’re obviously reached the limitation of your ability to be away from her.”

“Was that the night you were here?” Bruno asked. Luke nodded silently as Bruno looked thoughtful. “She was pretty livid herself that night. Of course, I didn’t ask what had happened, but her attitude made it seem like she had a legitimate complaint.”

“She was trying to tell me what was wrong with me. She was bringing up my … personal history and trying to say she knew better than I did about it,” Luke said. He made a lethargic attempt to pour more of his drink into the glass, then put the bottle down. “I guess I shouldn’t have brought up her past like I did.”

“Smooth, Kid,” Han said. He languidly draped an arm over the back of his chair. “Luke, unless you’re trying to get lacerated, you never bring up a woman’s past. That’s something better left undisturbed, like a nest of mange-infested gundarks or an unexploded mine.”

Bruno furrowed his brow. “You’re a Jedi. You can read people. What were her intentions? Was she trying to be cruel, to hurt you deliberately? Was she being over-critical, rattling off a litany of your faults? Was she lampooning your efforts, trying to make fun of you?” Bruno asked.

Luke stared at the bar. As loathe as he was to admit it, he couldn’t agree to any of those motivations. Finally he shook his head. “No. She said she was trying to help me.” He looked up and placed his chin in his hand. “She wanted to help me.”

“Hmm,” Bruno said. “I recall you lobbying her about improving herself by being trained as a Jedi. She would get pretty agitated when you implied that she would be better off doing things your way. Could it be possible that the tables turned here, and maybe you didn’t appreciate someone trying to tell you what to do with your life?”

Luke silently considered Bruno’s words before speaking again. “It’s possible I took it too personally,” he conceded.

Bruno leaned against the bar. “Luke, as a friend who has been married a long time, here’s my advice. Go back and really consider why Mara said what she did. And if what she was saying concerned her enough to be that passionate, well, there’s a lady who cares about you enough to take a risk for you. Maybe these charges you’ve levied against Mara are unfair. It sounds to me she was saying them because she cared.”

“I guess you have a point,” Luke said. “But to pull something out of your past and use it against you, when you can’t change what has happened…” He paused and took a sip. “How do you forgive someone who has hurt you? How do you forget the past?”

Bruno glanced across the bar, and Luke looked in that direction. In the doorway, Luke saw Alida standing with a guest. She talked animatedly, her lithe blue hands moving in tandem with her twisting lekku as she spoke. Luke sensed Bruno’s rise in emotions as he watched his wife from a distance. “You can’t always forget when you’ve been hurt by someone you cared about. But you can decide to forgive and move ahead,” Bruno said.

“Is that what you had to do, Bruno?” Luke asked softly. “Decide to let the past go?”

Bruno looked at Luke in surprise, then smiled wryly. “I decided that it was better to live in the present. You can’t change the mistakes she made. You look at who that person is today, and you love her as she is now.”

Curious, Luke glanced at Alida again. She looked in their direction and smiled at the men, then turned her attention back to greet a new guest. Whatever had gone between them, Luke understood, was their private matter. Bruno was simply too much of a gentleman to share the lurid details of whatever had happened that had threatened their relationship.

“Look, Luke,” Bruno said. “Love isn’t something that comes with these great guarantees or lavish promises. It’s possible that Mara’s missing you as much as you are missing her, and she’s waiting for you to take that first step. Don’t stay in this emotional labyrinth, taking all these blind turns to avoid what happened. If you value this relationship, get out of this maze and go back into the open. Contact her and clear the air between you.”

“And what if she won’t speak to me?” Luke countered.

“That’s a lackluster excuse for not trying,” Bruno pointed out. “The fact that you made the effort to repair the relationship counts for a lot, you know. If you say nothing, you are telling her that you don’t care enough to try to save this. And sometimes you have to be the first one to say you’re sorry.”

“That’s true,” Han interjected. “Chewie told me right after I got married that the two most important phrases a husband should learn are ‘Yes, sweetheart,’ and ‘I’m sorry’ and that’ll cover just about anything.”

“Two things are the linchpins in a relationship, Luke: trust and forgiveness,” Bruno said. “If you forgive each other for making mistakes, then you can let the past go. If you trust each other, then you know you will be forgiven when you mess up.” Bruno laughed. “And believe me, you are going to mess up. Nobody’s perfect. Isn’t it nice to know that someone will forgive you and love you anyway?”

Luke nodded at Bruno’s lucid comment, but before he had a chance to reply, Bruno gave a jaunty wave and went to the other end of the bar to wait on another patron. Luke turned to see Han discretely speaking into his comm.

“No, things are fine now,” Han said into the device in his hand. “Luke and I just had a long talk. I explained how he should handle what’s bothering him.”

There was a pause. “Yes, sweetheart,” Han said. Luke smiled. “No, I’ll be there soon. Why?” Han asked. “I’m sorry. Yes, sweetheart. I’ll be home very soon. Love ya, princess.”

Han clicked off his comm and put it back in his jacket pocket, and Luke tossed a few credits on the bar as the two men stood up. Han stretched and then clasped his brother-in-law across the back. “Well, I’m glad we had that little talk, Kid. Now maybe I can get some sleep.”

Yay!!!!!!!!!! Bruno's so wise, and so tactful, yet direct. He speaks from experience but also from just knowing what makes people tick so well. happy He gets right to the heart of things and untangles all the confusing and muddled headed thinking. He does it without making Luke all defensive and shut off, opening him up to the broader view. applause applause

Han was too cute in this. He's right about those two essential phrases LOL
