Walker_of_minds: Thanks! I will add you to the list.
MsLanna: thanks for coming out of lurkerdom!
Jedi_Liz: I’m very glad you are enjoying this. Here is the next installment. Thank you for being so patient.
Presenting:
An Alliance at Alida’s ~ Part the Thirteenth ~ Mysterious Messages
Thank you, Jedi_Trace, for another very helpful beta!
SAT words: malicious, marred, maxim, meager, meandering, meticulous, mitigate, morose, misgiving, misconception, mire, mundane, mettle, missive, manifest
“What are you up to?” Bruno asked, his curiosity finally getting the better of him. He left the other patrons to address Luke, who had been slouched over a datapad for the better part of an hour.
Luke looked up, then blushed slightly. “I’ve decided to write a note to Mara. She’s scheduled to go on another mission for Karrde, and she probably won’t be around for a while.”
Bruno hid a smile. He gestured at the datapad. “You know,” he said, leaning against the bar, “this is the traditional medium for the heartfelt missive.” He slid a disposable bar napkin toward Luke, who smiled at the joke. “Seriously, though, unless you plan to send it to her through a comm, you should write it on a flimsy.”
“Does it really matter?” Luke asked, frowning.
Bruno nodded sagely. “It matters. Seeing your handwriting is always more impressive than reading something you typed.”
Luke leaned back. “Alida once mentioned that you wrote her love poetry before you two got married. Maybe you could give me some ideas?”
At that comment, a patron nearby perked up, frowning into his drink. “Love stinks,” he announced morosely as he gazed blearily into his glass.
“Yeah, yeah,” Bruno muttered. He reached up to the shelf behind him and pulled out a small bottle, then poured the clear liquid into a glass and put it in front of the patron. “Here, friend. You need to drink this and get on home. Give me your address and I’ll get you an airtaxi.”
Having addressed the issue with the incapacitated patron, Bruno turned back to Luke. “All right, I’ll see what I can do to help. What do you have so far?”
Luke handed the datapad to Bruno, who rubbed his chin thoughtfully as he read. Finally, he spoke. “Well, this is a start. How long did it take to write this?” Bruno asked.
Luke sighed. “Two days.”
Bruno raised an eyebrow. “Well. Look, Luke. What you have here is truthful and honest, but not that exciting. Remember the old maxim about catching more myrins with sucre than with tart-root? Women like the romantic, not the every-day and mundane. I think you could change some of the wording. May I?”
“Be my guest,” Luke said.
“Like here,” Bruno said, highlighting a passage. “You write, ‘Love is a really good thing.’ You could step that up. How about changing that to something else?” Bruno thought for a moment, then nodded. “Love is a many splendored thing.”
The patron nearby lifted his head from the counter. “Hah! No it isn’t. Love is a battlefield!” he slurred, a malicious gleam in his eye. He squinted at Luke. “You know what, buddy? You give love a bad name.”
Bruno sighed and turned back to the patron. He walked over, took the glass of alcohol away from him and slid the new beverage in front of the patron. “Friend, you need to drink this and head home. No more drinks for you,” Bruno said amiably before turning back to Luke.
The patron rose up indignantly. “I don’t need to go home! I’m just fine. In fact, I think I’ll stay here and have another drink.” He glared at Bruno, then turned his scowl toward Luke. “Love,” he snorted derisively. “What’s love got to do with it?”
Luke looked curiously at the conversation. “Will that liquid mitigate his liquor?” he asked quietly.
Bruno stared hard at the noncompliant guest, who was busy muttering at the countertop. “It would, if he drank it,” Bruno said, shaking his head.
“You want to drink that and go home,” Luke said quietly. He waved his hand slightly.
The man looked at him, squinted, then eyed the clear liquid Bruno had just presented. He seemed to reconsider, then took the glass and drank it quickly, smacking his lips when he finished. “Bartender, I want to go home. Call me a taxi,” he announced, slamming the empty glass on the countertop. Bruno nodded and cast a grateful glance at Luke.
Once the slightly inebriated man had safely meandered through the room and into a taxi, Bruno returned to Luke. “Thank you, Luke. The man’s having a tough day, but he seemed to be under the misconception that drinking would make it better. At least we know he’s safely on his way.”
“You’re welcome,” Luke said. “Glad to help.” He frowned slightly. Would Mara have disapproved? She was so meticulous about not “playing with the Force,” as she put it. But this was potentially saving someone’s life. He cleared his mind and searched his feelings, and decided that felt comfortable about it.
“Now, let’s see,” Bruno said, returning his attention to the datapad. “This is looking pretty good. I like what you said here, ‘I just want to be your everything.’”
“Ah,” Luke murmured. He had heard it somewhere, and it fit, so he had put it in the letter.
“And here, where you say you’re sorry that you are arguing.” Bruno looked Luke in the eyes. “Love means you never have to say you’re sorry. Could you rewrite it so it’s more positive? Instead of getting mired in misgivings about what you should have done, tell her how you’re looking forward seeing her again.”
He handed the datapad back to Luke, who regarded the suggestions. “I wish it were this easy,” Luke said finally. “I just write her a letter, show her I have the mettle to be the kind of man she deserves, and she’ll come back again.” He slumped and put the datapad on the counter. “It just seems to be such a meager offering.”
Bruno leaned against the counter. “Have you commed her, Luke? Or are you still waiting for her to make the first move?” When Luke didn’t answer, Bruno sighed. “Here you are, two stubborn people letting the loves of each other’s lives slip away because neither of you will place the comm. Have you ever considered that she might be afraid to lose you too?”
Luke scoffed. “Mara’s not afraid of anything--” he began.
Bruno cut him off. “Everyone’s afraid of something,” he said pointedly. “I don’t know exactly what happened between you that night, or if anything more happened afterward. But I do know what I saw, and Mara was the most upset I had ever seen her. You know, maybe she has put a lot of trust in you -- trust that she might not give anyone else.”
“I know. She feels hurt by what I said,” Luke admitted.
“Sometimes when a person wants to avoid being hurt, their fear will manifest as anger. In Mara’s case, it seems that she fears giving you her trust. Tell me: has she ever been hurt before? Betrayed by someone that she trusted?” Bruno pressed. “What if, in her past, there was someone whom Mara had trusted implicitly and who turned out to have lied to her?”
Luke looked up slowly as he recalled the words that had made Mara so angry that she had stormed out of the room. What gives you the authority to make these calls, to be the judge and jury for my offenses? Luke had asked. You spent all those years as a mind-linked servant to a Sith lord, and you think you understand the line between light and dark more clearly than I do?
He bowed his head. Mara had been betrayed by Palpatine. Although she now understood the terrible things the Emperor had done, coming to terms with how the Emperor had used her had still been a difficult journey for her. Of course she understood the difference between light and dark. She had grown up surrounded by dark but had not been seduced or marred by it. And he had thrown it in her face. Luke cringed at his selfishness.
He picked up the datapad and turned it over in his hands as he thought. Bruno watched him for a moment, then discretely moved away. Finally Luke looked up. “I have to contact her before she leaves,” he said, placing some credits on the counter. He paused and turned to his friend. “What do you recommend I should say when she answers the comm?” he asked.
Bruno smiled knowingly as he wiped down the counter. “Say ‘I just called to say I love you.’”

This is priceless! No way I can quote my favorite, it'd be the entire piece. Love the drunken patron and Bruno's responses! Love the many song titles woven in the piece! Love that Luke did the little wavy hand thingie to get the drunk to drink the sobering liquid!
I just love it!

Does Bruno listen to Stevie Wonder?
Good Post. Is it a coincidence that the next words would be "N's"?

He smiled at her, his eyes the brightest she'd ever seen them. She sucked in a sharp breath. Did he know what he did to her? She turned away quickly, her heart racing. She couldn't deny it anymore; she loved him. And couldn't deny him...anything. -Mara

Oooooh diva I love this update! That was adorable, I love the idea of Luke writing a love letter. He's such a cutie farmboy...
Yet somehow Bruno's advice reminded me vaguely of you beta-ing my stories......
Well done, I'm so happy to see you update this one!

Loved all the song titles and movie quotes. Great job!

Or at least saving them from being in a wreck and getting amnesia.

It was on her fifteenth day in the darkness of the Nirauan cave when Mara Jade awoke to discover a rescuer had finally arrived. It was not, however, any of the potential rescuers she would have expected. It was Luke. ~~And the rest is history~~

"Getting in a wreck and getting amnesia." Uh-huh. Then it goes downhill esp. at a friend's wedding. But, Remembrance is looking up again, so maybe the worse is over here too?

Those song titles took me back a long time ago. Will say this though. I alawys thought that the line "Love means never having to say you're sorry." was the most stupid thing I had ever heared. When you are in love, you have to say "I'm sorry." alot. I do agree about the handwritten letter as apose to the datapad. I think that e-mails and text messages have taken the personal feelings away from life expierences. My mom married my father right before "The Battle of the Bulge" when things were looking real bad for the allies. They had been dating since WWII started so he wrote her letters all the time and she still has them. They are a piece of history from a soldier's point of view. Text meaagaes are even causeing trouble with spelling and grammer. I agree with Bruno. Luke needs to write her a letter. Super post and yes I was rambling but you hit a nerve with me. Thanks.
