Title: Who Would Have Guessed?
Author: VaderLVR64
Timeframe: Post COPL
Characters: Han Solo, Leia, Chewie, Luke
Genre: ??
Summary: Han ponders the unpredictability of life.
Notes: Over 30 SW Writers Club Challenge. Here was the challenge: ~~Write a story about a SW character, reflecting back on their life experiences that have made them who they are today. Choose a character who perhaps wouldn't be your first choice. Stretch yourself. Delve into their most inner thoughts, fears, desires, goals, etc. Make it sad or happy or funny or all...that's your choice too. Most of all...have fun with this as a writer.~~
Disclaimer: It isn’t my sandbox but I like to burrow in it anyway!
Who Would Have Guessed?
Okay, I admit it. I’m as surprised as the next guy that I turned out respectable.
Who would have guessed?
Not me, that’s for damned sure. Chewie says he always had a feeling I had it in me, but frankly, I think the Wookiee’s been climbing too many trees and has gotten lightheaded. Anyway, it’s been a long and winding trade route to be sure.
It all started in a cantina, which seems to be where a lot of my stories start, I’ll admit. And this was a pretty rough cantina, in the bad part of Mos Eisley, Tatooine. I’m not sure if there’s a
good
part of Mos Eisley, but if there
is
then I know we weren’t there. It was a crowded cantina, dusty like everything else on Tatooine, and with just a hint of something that stunk in the air.
It made me feel at home.
And there was this old guy. Not ancient, just…
old
, sort of used up looking, if you know what I mean. He seemed to look right through me while we talked and that made me sort of edgy, but I couldn’t pass up the fee he offered. I should have known it was too good to be true. Just a little trip to Alderaan, he said, no complications, just avoid tangling with the Empire. Sure…easy…
Pretty much everyone in the galaxy knows how
that
little trip ended. Yep, we got an express trip to the Death Star. Not the best vacation spot in the galaxy, and settling your bill is sheer hell. I was just starting to like the crazy old hermit when he
proved
his insanity and let Vader strike him down. Of course, I’ve come to find out he had some very good reasons for doing that, at least according to the Kid. As for me, I’m still not entirely convinced the old fellow was in his right mind.
We got away from the Death Star –
barely
– and what has turned out to be a beautiful relationship almost got scuttled when her highnessess insulted my baby – the
Falcon
. Of course, I admit, I sort of liked her for it, because even
I
admit that the
Falcon
doesn’t look like much. She’s got a lot of heart, though, and that’s what matters. I’m talking about my ship, by the way, though the same could be said of Leia except that her outside matches her inside – she’s gorgeous anyway you look at it.
I’m getting a bit ahead of myself.
So, I rescue the princess (the Kid helped out some, I’m man enough to say) and we gave Vader and his crew the slip. If I had been smart – or incredibly stupid, I still haven’t figured out which – I would have been on my way right after I got my reward. But that’s when it all started, you see, the respectability thing. I didn’t realize it then, or I might have run anyway.
I kept remembering a pair of big brown eyes and I couldn’t make myself leave that pathetic band of Rebels behind – leave
her
behind, and so I did something I had never done. I turned the
Falcon
around and headed straight for trouble…on purpose. Usually I find it pretty much by accident.
It turned out all right; I took a shot at a TIE and unknowingly sent my future father-in-law careening off into space. I wonder who would have been more surprised at that little revelation at the time, him or me. I’m laying odds it would be him, even if I don’t play the odds.
When she threw herself into my arms afterward, I started thinking about things I’d never considered before. Settling down, making some babies that were as mouthy as she was and as adorable as me, you know…the whole “domestic bliss” thing. Not that I would have admitted it of course, even under torture (which her father tried anyway). You see, I had never thought of my life in those terms before. It was more than a little frightening, thinking about sharing forever with one person and, gods forbid, in one place.
She just felt so
right
in my arms, like she had always belonged there and it had just taken her a while to find me. Sounds silly when I say it like that, but that’s how it felt. At the time, of course, I had no clue what she was thinking. She’d make a decent sabaac player because she can keep all sorts of secrets behind those pretty brown eyes. But I could tell that she felt
something
for me too, something besides disgust and loathing I mean.
Maybe she saw the same man inside of me that Chewie had always sworn was there. But it sure felt different coming from a beautiful princess than it did coming from a Wookiee who knows too much for his own damned good. I could
almost
believe what I thought I saw in her eyes.
But Han Solo isn’t a pushover, not by a long shot.
It took me a few years to finally admit, even to myself, that I had fallen and fallen hard for a
princess
. What are the odds? Never mind, I don’t even want to know, and if I did, I’m quite sure Goldenrod would be happy to oblige.
I almost messed it up again, just before we got married. I panicked and did something stupid, but luckily, Leia is used to that. She forgave me – even turned down that pretty boy Isolder – and said she’d make an honest man out of me, which would be a first.
Now, the biggest adventure of them all is about to begin. You see, she’s got two little Solos growing inside of her. I’m not sure if I’m terrified or overjoyed, but it’s probably a combination of the two with a dash of nausea added. I never had a father, so being a good one is going to be a stretch. I’m going to have to wing it, but I’m good at that. I hope. Half the time I wake up in a cold sweat, sure that I’m going to mess it up and our kids are going to hate me. And then sometimes, I think just maybe I can pull it off and be a decent father. I know one thing, these kids are going to know they’re loved. I’ll make sure of it, no matter how stupid I look.
Han Solo - a father.
It sounds like the beginning of a bad joke. And since I’ve never been one to do things the easy way, we’ve got twins coming. Not one, but two and that means they we already start out evenly matched – meaning I think we’re going to lose the battle to be in control of the household. I can only pray that at least one of them will be calm like Luke.
What am I saying?
Luke Skywalker, the farmboy who rushed into an Imperial detention center to rescue a princess with no more than a boyish grin and a prayer.
That
Luke Skywalker? And I’m hoping one of my kids is like
him
? If one of them is like that, I’ll be an old man in two years. Not that Leia is any better, or even me for that matter.
No matter who they take after, and I don’t even want to mention my father-in-law because the least said about
him
the better, we’re still in for a wild ride. Because any way you look at it, there’s no way that a Skywalker-Solo is going to be anything ordinary.
I’m watching Leia happily munch away on yet another disgusting concoction. I can smell it from here, and she’s making sounds like a rancor in love. She’s got sauce smeared all over her face, a smudge of grease on the sheet covering the huge mound of her belly and her hair is sticking up at all angles because it’s 0200. My princess doesn’t look so regal at the moment.
She looks at me and grins around a mouthful. “Love you, flyboy,” she mumbles.
And
that
makes it all worth it, even being respectable.

That was so awesome! Perfect look into Han's mind, there. Great commentary on all as filtered through the scoundrel's eyes.
And he'll always be a scoundrel, no matter how 'respectable' he becomes.
Great, job, VaderLVR!

Fantastic look into Han's head.
She’s got a lot of heart, though, and that’s what matters. I’m talking about my ship, by the way, though the same could be said of Leia except that her outside matches her inside – she’s gorgeous anyway you look at it.
WHile he loves his ship, I couldn't help but sigh in anvy of his thoughts of Leia.
Settling down, making some babies that were as mouthy as she was and as adorable as me, you know…the whole “domestic bliss” thing.
That is so Han!!

This is wonderful! I was LOL through the whole thing. You nailed Han perfectly.
LOL Moment, well one of many:

Bravo Vadey! Great response to the challenge!

Great Han
MamaV
, you've never written Solo before...psshaw I say.
It turned out all right; I took a shot at a TIE and unknowingly sent my future father-in-law careening off into space. I wonder who would have been more surprised at that little revelation at the time, hi m or me.
Sensitive and hilarious, all at the same time, perfect Han.

Great job getting into Han's head. It can be a scary place to go, though for a person who regularly gets into Vader's head, odds are it wasn't too scary.

It was on her fifteenth day in the darkness of the Nirauan cave when Mara Jade awoke to discover a rescuer had finally arrived.
It was not, however, any of the potential rescuers she would have expected.
It was Luke.

Ah, the Respectable Scoundrel puts his thoughts down on flimsy. And what an entertaining account of the experiences that formed the man himself. Very true to his way of thinking and speaking, etc. He can be a tough guy to write, but you did nicely with this one.

Perfect, just perfect. I could
hear
Harrison Ford's voice, I tell you!
Not the best vacation spot in the galaxy, and settling your bill is sheer hell.
Great line!
I think my favorite part was where he started hoping his kids would be calm like Luke--and then corrected himself hurriedly
. I loved his thoughts on being a father, too, just mushy enough that Han would let himself get away with it.
Great job, as always!

Brain: Now, Pinky, if by any chance you are captured during this mission, remember you are Gunther Heindriksen from Appenzell. You moved to Grindelwald to drive the cog train to Murren. Can you repeat that?
Pinky: Mmmm, no, Brain, don't think I can.

I think you got the attitude and voice of Han just right. It even changes from a bit more flimsy at the beginning to more serious at the end. Just like Han.
