	Disclaimer: See first post Season of Pain Chapter Twelve: To the rescue Jacen frowned at the datapad in front of him - something about the Covenant retreat back to Naboo two weeks before bothered him. Fidgeting in the posh center seat on the Valiant's bridge, he wondered what the enemy was planning. No doubt they were pulling some forces to cover their under-defended home systems - the documents recently retrieved had shown a chronic lack of ships guarding several key systems, a lack made more profound by the hit-and-run attack the Second Fleet had made on Bothawui. But the withdrawal would also have provided enough ships to start an offensive elsewhere. He glanced to his wife, who was standing behind him, and asked "If you were the Covenant, where would you try a sneak attack right about now?" "If I were their their strategic planner, I would most likely attack Ansion, although Rodia, Duro, or Onderon would also be high priority." Tenel Ka's brow furrowed in concentration, analyzing possible scenarios in her head, "Conversely, the recapture of Tanaab might be a logical move." "Except for Rodia, all of those strikes would most likely be staged from Kuat, where their ships might receive fresh supplies and repairs." Something clicked in Jacen's mind as he ran through the potential scenarios. "And if the ships are from the Arkanis-Anoat corridor, they'll need a pit stop before any major action, the way they've been fighting in those parts. We can scratch Rodia from the list." Tenel Ka plucked the datapad from her husband's grip, called up a different set of information and held the display so both could see. "And several hit-and-fade attacks have been made against Onderon, Zeltros, Ambria and several points along the perimeter of the Hapes cluster." Jacen bit off a particularly vile curse under his breath. "Ansion! How could we have been so blind?" He turned to his communications officer. "Lieutenant, contact the Ninth Fleet." "Aye, sir." the young Corellian technician replied, operating her board with deliberate speed. After a few minutes that seemed like hours, she forlornly announced "No response, sir." Biting back a curse, Jacen slammed his fist against the arm of his command chair. "Tell the fleet to prepare to move out for the Ansion system in full battle mode, assault formation Gamma two. Also send a message to HQ appraising them of the situation." "Yessir." the officer replied, setting about her new task with even greater efficiency. An uncomfortable silence settled over the Bridge, which was broken at length with the comm officer's report. "All commands report ready to jump to Hyperspace on your mark." "Engage" Tenel Ka replied, moving from behind her husband to her own chair beside his. "One minute to realspace reversion" the navigator announced. No sooner did the words leave his mouth than the entire ship bucked beneath them. "Interdiction field" he shouted above the alarms. "Communications and sensors jammed!" one of the other officers added. Tenel Ka frowned. "Do we have any visuals on any vessels?" "Yes," one officer replied, "There is a large Covenant flotilla in orbit of Ansion, four hundred twelve ships." The young man paused and added, "Plus debris from several times as many." Before either of the Jedi could absorb this, the communications officer interjected "Incoming transmission on tightband signals; audio only. It's using Alliance codes and is coming from the system's asteroid field." "By all means," Jacen responded. "This is General Jacen Solo of the Twenty Second fleet." "Thank Goodness." The voice of General Kyle Katarn filtered over the speakers, along with copious amounts of static from the jamming. "A large Covenant attack group blasted it's way into the system this morning, outnumbering us five to one. We gave them as good as we had, but we couldn't hold against their torpedo barrages for long. I managed to get the Immortal and thirty other vessels to safety, and we managed to relieve the Covenant of most of their fleet in the process." The signal flared with static enough that it drowned out the defending general's words. " ... ready to pay them back for taking Ansion?" 	Disclaimer: See first post Season of Pain Chapter Thirteen: Recapturing Ansion Jacen swiveled in his chair to face his sensor operator. "Can you give me a breakdown on what's left of the Covenant forces?" "Aye, Sir. Looks like one Monarch-class star defender, eleven Republic-class Star Destroyers, a hundred and fifty Ralroost-class assault cruisers, fifty Vigilant-class light cruisers, one seventy five Starscream-class frigates, along with a bunch of assorted troopships. Oh, and there's next to no starfighters in the flotilla." "Nothing we cannot handle." Tenel Ka added, a wolfish gaze flickering across her stony visage. "Indeed" Jacen replied as he watched the remnants of the Ninth Fleet form up with the Twenty-Second. As the Immortal took up station alongside the Valiant, he breathed a sigh of relief. Literally in a class of her own, the rugged Star Defender was a symbol of the Alliance, alongside her two Audacity-class predecessors. The more numerous Sentinel-class Star Defenders that served as flagships for most fleets may have been somewhat more powerful, but didn't have the same presence. "All commands ready." The Communications officer reported, a hint of impatience in her voice. "Close to firing range and open up as soon as you can." Tenel Ka ordered, "Concentrate our fire on their command ship." The Monarch-class Star Defenders were a scaled-down version of the Sovereign-class Super Star Destroyer with a massive cluster of torpedo launchers in place of the superlaser, a design that KDY had built in some numbers during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, and were quite deadly. "With pleasure" the gunnery control officer replied. "Shields up; Turbolasers hot and charged, proton torpedoes locked and loaded." "Good. Launch fighters and bombers with orders to engage at will. Once we are within range, open up with everything we have." Standing, Tenel Ka walked towards the viewer, stopping between the helm and gunnery control, passively taking in the reports. "Starfighters are away, Your Majesty. Thirty seconds to firing range." "Enemy flotilla is maneuvering to defensive formation." "Ten seconds to firing range ... three, two, one; firing turbolasers. Covenant vessels are returning fire." With the last statement, the Valiant shuddered slightly. "Shields at Ninety-nine percent and holding. No damage." "Order two squadrons of K-Wings to hit the enemy command ship with shield-buster munitions, once their shields are down, hit their primary reactor with a salvo of thirty torpedoes." In full 'Battlequeen' mode, Tenel Ka stood in the center of the bridge, a righteous fire shining through her impassive mask. "Aye ma'am." A brief pause, then the gunnery controller announced "Their shields are down, firing torpedoes." Jacen watched the torpedoes fly from the Valiant with satisfying ka-chunk's only to blossom into fiery explosions at the behemoth's stern, before the whole six-kilometer long menace exploded silently in a spectacular fireball as a cheer went up across the bridge. "Enemy jamming and interdiction fields are down." With the sensor officer's announcement, the cheers intensified. Another impact rattled the Valiant's bridge crew. "Torpedo impact just forward of the main hangar bay - shields down to eighty-seven percent." "Damage report, ensign." Jacen barked with uncharacteristic force. "Two tractor beam emplacements off-line, three more at reduced function. Repair crews are on their way; no casualties." Breathing a sigh of relief, he sank back into his chair only to bolt upright as he felt the crew of one of the Hapan vessels perish in a terrible flash. "We just lost the Carenath." The sensor officer announced, sadly. That had been one of the Battle Dragons on the vanguard. "Bring the Ramoth and the Bloodwing forward to close the gap." Tenel Ka ordered, analyzing the rapidly diminishing Covenant threat. "Send the Immortal and the Song of War to eliminate that Star Destroyer, and bring Firebrand and Majestic around for another pass at those frigates. Good, now have four squadrons of Miy'Til's go after those troopships." Watching the slaughter on the viewer, Jacen recognized a sickening truth. "They're going to fight to the death." "Idiots." remarked one bridge officer, "Let 'em" spat another, fire in her voice. After a few more volleys, the last Ralroost-class cruiser crumpled into a burning wreck, and the Covenant invasion force was no more - at least the force in space. "Your majesty, the Covenant managed to land a considerable ground force." The sensor officer reported. "How large?" Tenel Ka asked. "Seventy-nine thousand infantry, eleven hundred light repulsorlift vehicles and nine hundred fifty four hover tanks, along with support vehicles and enough provisions to operate for six months." "Prepare our ground forces." She frowned slightly at the development. "Bridge to Anja Gallandro" she announced over the intercom. "Gallandro here." came the reply, filtered over the speakers. "How soon can you prepare your group for a ground action?" "The Rangers can be ready in an hour." "Do it, bridge out." Relieved that the Antarian Rangers would be able to support the ground assault, she turned to the communications officer she asked "What is our fleet status?" "On the whole, pretty good for what we just did. We lost the Carenath along with two Nova's, four gunships, eleven K-Wings, fifteen Miy'Tils, and four W-Wings. Thirty-eight other vessels are seriously damaged" She proceeded to list them, "And total fleet-wide casualties are one thousand forty-five dead, fifteen thousand four hundred seven wounded, two thousand one hundred eighteen of them seriously." Can't wait for more! It's kicking up a notch ... Glad you liked Tenel Ka's "Battlequeen" mode ... she's got more than a bit of Athena in her. Anja will be popping in and out for the rest of the arc, but won't be playing as big a part as I'd have liked due to plot realities. The Covenant forces aren't as dumb as you think - they'd simply rather die rather than tell Admiral Frigis - AKA Darth Sheol - that they failed. Getting blown up is quick, if nothing else.
