Season of Pain Chapter fourteen: Battle Lines "Cheriss, would the Suns be willing to join Weyr squadron in covering our troops both in the landing and providing air cover during the battle?" Tenel Ka asked the veteran, knowing full well that the Adumari pilot would be honored to fly with Hapes' most elite squadron, whose Miy'Til fighters were painted to resemble golden dragons. "I could hardly refuse." Cheriss managed to reply, awe in her voice. "Only, will they be offended by working with us - I know they're an all-female squadron and half my pilots are men ... " "They are used to flying alongside Hold Squadron, which is all male, and will not refuse to pair up with an integrated squadron, especially one as notable as yours." "It looks like we'll be in the middle of a ground battle for a change," Ben remarked, seated next to Zoe on a landing craft, "You scared?" "Of course not. We'll be pretty far behind the front lines, and I'll be using my battle meditation to help defeat the Covenant forces. The chances of enemy forces breaking through is slim, and if they do, I'll have you to protect me." Zoe smiled reassuringly at her best friend, feeling a warmth that she hadn't noticed before, but dismissing it as simple nervousness. "Yeah," he agreed, "If anyone tries to hurt you, I'll crispy-fry his head." "Thanks. I knew I could count on you." The dark-eyed girl replied, with a mixture of affection, relief and levity. "Just watch where you fling those fireballs." She shuddered at his liking of assembling a wad of flammable material, lighting it with the Force, and telekinetically hurling it at various targets. "Hey." he muttered, smiling like his uncle, "It's me." "That's what I'm afraid of." Zoe swatted him playfully with her hat in response to his tease. "Let us fortify this ridge. I want all the heavy artillery assembled at the crest, and ramparts dug for infantry starting halfway up." Tenel Ka directed the engineers and commanders on organizing the front lines. "Once those are ready, assemble all troops not needed to defend the command post in front of the defensive perimeter. Place the Beast Corp and any local volunteers in small units scattered along the vanguard, alongside our mechanized forces. Behind that, our regulars should form up by platoon. Mobility and psychological advantage should be our primary goals." "Aye Ma'am." The assembled officers replied in unison. before setting about their various tasks. "Your Majesty, a local leader by the name of Barshan, son of Bayaaar wishes to see you." An aide de camp announced, entering the command center. "By all means, show him in." Remembering a previous battle eight years before, she replied with slightly more enthusiasm than usual. Barshan and his kinsmen had helped her drive Kuat Drive Yards from an illegal mining site shortly after the end of the Yuuzhan Vong war, an action that had led to KDY being nationalized and led to the present war. Despite the unintended consequences of the battle - including her then-fiance losing part of his left arm to flechettes - she welcomed the aid of a seasoned warrior who had already proven himself in numerous battles. "As you wish, Your Majesty." The aide responded before leaving. Returning a heartbeat later, he presented the noble Alwari warrior to the queen. "We are already acquainted, lieutenant," she instructed the young officer coolly. Turning to the Ansionian soldier, she gave a gesture of respect. "Welcome, Barshan. It has been some time." "It has, Master Jedi. Or should that be Your Majesty?" Barshan bowed slightly. "You may use whichever title you prefer, since I am comfortable with both." "Thank you, Master Jedi. I come to offer the aid of my people. We have thirty-five thousand volunteers from nearly every Alwari tribe wishing to drive out the Covenant forces. Will you accept?" "I would be honored to, Sava Barshan. With your approval, they will be in the first wave." "I would not have it any other way." "Alright, now that we're inside the city and have a base of operations," Kyle Katarn announced to the small commando team comprised of himself, Doran Tainer, and a dozen Antari Rangers, "We just have to wait for the queen's signal." "Let's hope we have time to rest up before we have to move out." One of the Rangers muttered. "We will," Anja Gallandro whispered back. "We have more than a day's wait ahead of us. Let's see what surprises we can whip up in the meantime." 	Never read Pern myself... Anyway, nice little bit there. Loved Ben there with Zoe. A bit Dark though... just a bit. The Dragonriders of Pern is a fun series to read ... you'd probably like it. Glad you liked the Ben and Zoe stuff ... yeah Ben is flirting with the Dark Side, but he's not really in danger of falling - yet. I always thought Ben imitating Han was fun. Especially since they're kindred spirits despite only being related by marriage. 	This is an interesting story. I kind of wish the EU went like this. I think the Yuuzhan Vong should get another chance (damn Bothans!). Although, there are some things I would change, but you are doing a good job. Keep it up. By the way, I like the name "Covenant of Free Worlds". I may have to steal it.

I put this(and all my other fanfics) on long-term hiatus so I could concentrate on a volume of poetry I'm writing, but I should be able to update this every now and then, hopefully soon as I have a long weekend. 	Well I was searching through all of the completed stories looking for something interesting when I came across Renewal II. Looked good so I went back to the first one and been reading ever since. If the other 2 weren't locked I'd give them a bump.
