Summary: With the war being over, Jaina decides it’s time to make some changes in her life.
Disclaimer: I own nothing. George Lucas owns all things Star Wars.
Author’s Note: This is my first story ever, so I don’t really know what I’m doing yet. I hope that eventually it will all work out and be fairly coherent, but who knows.
Chapter 1
The war was over, finally, and for the first time in five years they were able to remember what peace was like. A huge burden had been lifted from the shoulders of the galaxy. Even though many were no longer with them and rebuilding would take years to accomplish, things were really turning around. They just sat there, the two of them, staring up at the moons of Ossus. The council had decided this would be the new location of the Jedi academy.
They came to help out in between missions. She was still in charge of Twin Suns, but the squadron was given some leave. Since it was not completely overseen by the military, its new role was still in question. He had dismantled his Dozen. He wanted to focus on his council duties and do his part in the rebuilding of the jedi.
They sat in silence, both reflecting over the war. The good, the bad, those that should still be there but weren’t. Their feelings were bittersweet. So much bad happened, but yet there was some good too. She couldn’t help but think about the man sitting next to her and everything that happened between them during the war. It was anything but what she would have expected. She couldn’t help but laugh about it.
“And just what has got you so amused Goddess?”
“First of all, the war is over, Kyp. I’m not at Goddess anymore.”
“Ah yes, but to me you always will be,” he added with the smirk that always made her consider smacking it right off his face.
She opted to roll her eyes instead and finished, “I was just thinking about us.” Kyp’s face suddenly changed to an expression Jaina couldn’t read. “You know, how we weren’t really friends before. I mean you were kind of like family, but the few years before the war I never really saw you much. Then you became the guy that constantly argued with Uncle Luke and Jacen. Then you were a potential friend and teacher. Then well, a person I despised.” Kyp winced a little at this. He tried not to think about what happened with Jaina at Serpindal. “Then my savior, master, wing mate, friend, and now…” Kyp tried not to, but he couldn’t help but feel a surge of hope. “Probably one of my best friends.”
Kyp smiled back at her and put his arm around her. He could feel her arm slide around his waist. At some point during the last year or so of the war, their friendship reached this level of comfort. He still had some feelings for Jaina, strong ones, but he knew that was something that wasn’t going to happen. He had accepted this and was perfectly happy being her friend, a best friend. Still, as much as he tried he couldn’t help but feel a little surge of hope every now and then. Kyp joined Jaina’s laughter.
“Yeah, well seeing as how we never actually killed each other I guess there was no way we could avoid being friends after everything. Not saying that you never tried to kill me.”
“Oh, that was only once.”
“Only once that you tried to kill me!”
“What are a few death threats and a little force lightning between friends,” she added with a shrug.
Kyp laughed a little and sarcastically replied, “Yeah and people wonder why we’re so close.”
Jaina couldn’t help but laugh too. She was hoping that there would be many more moments like this ahead since there wasn’t a war occupying all of their time anymore. They sat there in silence for several moments, just happy to be there.
Kyp broke the silence by asking, “So how are things with Fel?”
She looked at him with a pensive look on her face. “Fine.”
“So you’re happy not breaking it off with him like you thought about?”
“Well he seems okay with this whole meet-up-randomly-for-small-amounts-of-time thing we’ve got going on. I don’t know. It is kind of nice. I love him, but I don’t want a really serious relationship with him right now. This way we can be together some, but I can still focus on doing my own thing, whatever that is.”
“Ah.”
“Ah? You ask me about all this, and all you say is ‘ah’.”
“I just want to make sure you’re happy. I mean if that stiff imperial ever does something to you…”
“Yeah yeah, I know. But if he ever did something to me he would have to deal with me first.”
Kyp couldn’t help but notice how much she resembled Han at that moment, pointing to her chest with a lopsided smile. He just laughed and replied, “Alright goddess. I know I wouldn’t want to incur the wrath of you”
“That’s right,” she said as she poked him in the chest. Then they both fell silent once again and starred at the moons some more.
