ATTENTION: Author's Note.

My dearest readers. This morning I made a difficult decision. I have been rushing forward, making progress on the next post of this story. However, due to time constraints of the holiday tomorrow, I have decided not to post this week. I began to realize that I was pushing to appease your desire to move forward – but in reality, your desire is to move forward with quality story. If I push through right now, I will wet your appetite for more, but I do not think it will be the quality you have come to expect. To me, quality is more important.

I hope you will bear with me through this process. There will be a post next Wednesday. We’ve got 3 or 4 posts left and they’re sure to be good. I think it’s worth the wait!

To all of my international readers, have a wonderful week. To all of my readers in the US, I hope you have a fantastic Thanksgiving. I know I’m certainly thankful for this experience and all of you.

See you next week!!

hugs

Telanna’tani

No problem Voz, I for one haven't even caught up yet! But you're totally right, quality over timeliness, I don't think any of us here have a problem with that because most of us can empathize.

Have a great Thanksgiving!

Replies!

ccp: Yeah, here’s hoping they can keep it civil. Thanks, Cowboy!

verybusy: Glad you like Cherith. She’s becoming my fave too. Nothing like scheming children to help heat things up. And yes, I think Jaina’s mind if finally certain. She definitely subscribes to the “don’t tell me what I can’t do” mentality. Thanks for reading!

JainaJag14: It’s definitely nice to see Jaina stand tall. Just wait for this next installment… And yes, they should make it one piece… SHOULD being the key word. mischief And thanks for understanding on the extension. I hope you had a great holiday. Yay - now it’s Christmas time!! Thanks, Kim!

Lyne: Thanks! I’m glad you liked it. I liked writing the forest scene too. I’ve heard from those who experienced this sort of thing that Gavin’s reaction is pretty realistic. I wanted to be as real as possible. But you’re going to have to wait for a Jaina/Jag for another post at least, sorry. grin Thanks for understanding. I think the week off was worth it. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Thanks for reading!

Oldjedinurse: Yeah, I miss the icons too. Thanks for such a great compliment, Oldj. Hopefully I can keep it up – we’re on the home stretch!

G_Anakin: Thanks for stopping by. Reading lat e at night carries that danger, doesn’t it. Hope you were able to understand everything later! grin Thanks again.

Zonoma: laugh I know I already told you about how your comments cracked me up, but I have to say it again. When you phrase it like that, I’d have my doubts too! Certainly it wasn’t my ideal relational scenario, but I kept thinking about how many times I hear about people who “shack up” after funerals and other traumatic circumstances, and the plot bunny just wouldn’t back off! I’m glad I won you over in the end. grin And I thought you’d like his kids. You are added to the PM list, my dear. Thanks again! hugs

Solo_and_Fel: Scary how the time flies, huh. In the story and here! Here, you were sad about a week – then I went and made you wait two. Rest assured, my friend. You will not be disappointed this week. I’m posting the next post right after I’m done here!

I’m glad you liked the Bantha comment, by the way. I was pretty tickled when I thought of it. *giggle* And yes, the walk to the hangar will be interesting – in more ways that one. Glad you liked it!

padawanlost: Amen to your Solo Stubbornness comment. I agree wholeheartedly. Now if only we can get her to turn it into something productive… Also glad you caught the Force sensitivity thing. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out. (Don’t let me forget!) I’m not sure how this could tie into Legacy at the moment, other than something in the epilogue, but if you think of a tie in, let me know. I’d love to brainstorm something with you!

Hope you survived your turkey-induced-coma. grin . I’m so glad you’re enjoying this. Let’s hope that time away allowed me to keep up the quality. Thanks for reading, my dear! love

Master_Vicky: I think of the estate as a “joint venture.” Jag had more than a little say. As for a Meri post, I don’t think she’ll be popping anytime soon, but you never know… Thanks for stopping by!

TKL: Thank you so much! Scheming children are definitely a positive thing, IMO. At least in this instance. Hopefully you’ll like this next part. I’m going to try my lot at technical writing… Thanks for understanding on the extension. I think I’m finally happy with this post. I hope you had a great holiday. hugs

Chimpo: Well aren’t you a smarty. tongue The rest of the family is definitely got it in for the couple. Family cooperation is a wonderful thing.

jaynasolofel: Well, Cherith made it back in because you guys loved her so much. happy I am continually amazed by the diversity of children in the same family. You probably know what I mean. I consistently see siblings that are so different in the way they approach things. My mother-in-law and her twin sister, for example, are so complete opposites, they can barely get along. It’s just fascinating for me to see God’s diversity! I really wanted to bring that out here. I’m glad you made that comment!

Thanks for your comments. More comes right now! grin

Madame_Solo: Thanks for understanding. That reminds me! I think you’ve posted in Revival since I posted last. I’ll have to check that out soon. Hope your thanksgiving was a good one and that you’re not locked up in ice! Drive safe over there! (We have 3 inches of snow here, with 10 degree temps. But somehow it’s supposed to warm up enough to freeze rain tomorrow. Go figure!)

BigFatty: Yeah, yeah. You told me. laugh My holiday was good – hope yours was too. Thanks for all your work, my friend. It is you who helps me get all this right. You deserve the credit! hugs

Thank you all for your patience for this post. I hope you think it was worth the wait! hugs

Jaina Solo watched her companion as he walked a few steps ahead of her. Gavin Fel’s resemblance to his father was uncanny: his broad shoulders, his posture, his gait, everything. As they made their way across the lawn and behind the main house, it was all she could do not to laugh at the similarities. But considering the circumstances, she decided that probably wasn’t the best way to improve relations. She quickened her pace to catch up. “So, just where is this hangar? I didn’t see anything when I flew overhead yesterday.”

“You’re not supposed to.” Gavin replied in a gruff voice. “It’s hidden. That was my first stipulation to this whole crazy idea. No matter how much Father wishes to deny it, the Jedi are a target. I wasn’t excited about the idea of his moving here – there was no way I would have even a secondary home for my family without a few precautions.”

“So that’s what this is then? A secondary home?” Jaina was hoping to fill in a few more holes in this mystery, being as that was her original objective.

“Dad wants to make it his more permanent home, which I am opposed to. The rest of them seem to like it here… Only time will tell, I suppose.” By now they had moved pass the expansive building and had moved into the edge of the forested hill on a small trail. Jaina took note of what Gavin left unsaid – that he was not happy here. Probably has less to do with the planet, and a lot to do with me, she mused silently. Best to replace the power coupling now than to wait for it to explode.

“Gavin,” she said as she came to a stop in the path, “please.” Putting as much calm sincerity into her voice as possible while searching his eyes as he turned to look at her. They were filled with conflict, contempt and tempered rage all under an icy façade. “I can’t imagine how difficult this must before you – I don’t want to minimize that. But…”

“Please, stop, Master Jedi.”

“Please, call me Jaina-”

“Just stop. You’re right. You cannot possibly fathom this from my perspective, so don’t try. You are not going to win me over in one afternoon. I don’t know what spell you have the others under, but it won’t work with me. I see what you’re trying to do.”

Jaina managed to hide her shock, but only barely. “Look – first, I don’t have anyone under any sort of spell. If you knew anything about the Jedi Order beyond whatever distorted view of reality you hold dear, you’d know that.” He didn’t react. “Two: what exactly do you think I’m trying to do?”

“What every widower-monger does: get to the man through the kids. Win over the little girl with the big green eyes and maybe you’ll win over her Grampie, too.” Jaina imagined she could see steam rolling out of the man’s ears. “If you’re really serious about pursuing him, what took you so long? Why didn’t you come to Corellia and meet everyone sooner? You were dating for months! I’ll tell you why – because you had… Excuse me, you have no intention of following through with this. It’s all just one big game to you. Old flame with a dead wife comes back into the picture, so let’s shack up with him until you’ve had your fill…”

“That is ENOUGH.” Jaina’s own fury raged in her like a steady blaze. She clamped down on it and released it into the Force, before gathering some strength and enough peace to respond. “I know you don’t think much of me, Gavin Chak Fel, but if nothing else you WILL respect me as your elder.” She was satisfied to see him shrink – if only just a little. “You may have gotten your mother’s sharp tongue, but you obviously missed out on her tact. If you’ll kindly remember who my parents were, I’m sure you’ll realize that you’ve met your match.” It was a battle of wills then, both sets of eyes boring into the other waiting for someone to flinch. In a minor triumph, Gavin looked away first. His gaze raked the ground; he shook his head before returning his gaze to Jaina.

“What do you know of my mother?” He did not hide the contempt and malice in his voice. Not that she could blame him – in her position, she’d probably react the same way.

“While I didn’t have much personal interaction with her, I did follow her career. My mother was involved in selecting her as the GA delegate to the Ascendancy. She had dealings with Cala on several occasions before her appointment to Csilla. Through that, I became aware of her. She was a fantastic diplomat and a strong woman that I respected greatly.” She paused, not sure if she could truly bring herself to say the next part. She knew she couldn’t look Gavin in the eye, so she searched the ground instead. “As soon as I heard that she and your father were seeing each other, I knew they were perfect for each other.” She looked back up and Gavin and for the first time, he met her steady gaze with a soft one. “I am not trying to replace your mother, Gavin. I can’t – I know that. I don’t want to diminish her memory or simply shack up with your father. He means so much more than that to me.

“Why didn’t I come to Corellia sooner? Because I was scared: scared of you and your sister and how you’d react to me, scared of taking that next step and what it would mean. I was scared of the possibilities. And because of that fear, I lashed out at the first opportunity and hurt your father.” For the first time, Jaina felt like Gavin was actually listening to her. “I have regretted that since the moment it happened. But my pride has held me back – a pride I only conquered today. If I wasn’t serious about this, I wouldn’t be on this path with you, Gavin. I would already be gone.”

The silence hung between them for a moment before Gavin spoke. “We should keep moving. He’s been waiting for his mechanic.” She moved to his side and the pair continued down the forest trail. Ahead, Jaina could see the path meet up with the nearby waterfall. She cast Gavin and inquisitive look, but said nothing. The only sounds to be heard were the various birds and creatures that surrounded them, as well as the approaching falls. Jaina took comfort in the sounds, using them to once again find her center of peace. Gavin would not be persuaded in one day, perhaps not in another year, perhaps not ever. But Jaina hoped that eventually, he would at least cease loathing her.

“You speak with great passion and conviction, Master Jedi.” He spoke without turning to look at her, still focused on the path ahead. “It’s clear to me that you at least believe your own words. And while I still haven’t ruled out the mind manipulation option, I must admit that my sister is generally an excellent judge of character. And she’s spent a lot of time discussing this with Father; that must count for something.” They had reached the edge of the falls. Jaina could see the path continue behind the multitude of water cascading down beside them. The mist was already billowing around them and Jaina was once again glad she’d left her robes at home. The roar was deafening, making speech nearly impossible. Gavin said nothing and charged forward on the path behind the falls. Jaina watched cautiously. She was sure on her feet, but knew that the path ahead would be covered with an assortment of algae and moss, making it difficult to traverse on a good day. But Gavin didn’t waver or slow, just marched right in. When she hesitated, he turned and waved for her to follow. She complied, albeit rather reluctantly.

As she passed through the threshold and under the water’s spray, she felt a tingling feeling. She quickly turned around to get a fix on the feeling and realized she’d passed through an electronic field of some kind. It was then she realized the roar of the falls around her had become nearly silent. She spun to face Gavin, who provided a small but proud smile. “Fancy piece of machinery you have here, Mr. Fel.”

“It’s one of our more advanced technologies.” Gavin explained as they continued their trek behind the falls. “We’re now standing under a rellafield, as we’ve called it. It’s a combination of magcon field technology and the environmental fields used on Csilla to protect the Chiss from their adverse weather. It effectively controls the atmosphere inside the rellafield, no matter how it’s shaped. As you can tell, there is also a sound dampening field integrated in. The only drawback at the moment is that the field can only be sustained for five meters before needing to be amplified with a repeater.”

“And that’s what these arches are?” The metal-looking arches extended out from the rock face and curved down until it met the edge of the floor next to the falls. Inside the field, the rock was algae free and dry. “What about the water? Is it evaporated by the electronic field? Wouldn’t that dissipate the waterfall and disclose the location? At least in this instance?”

Gavin looked as though he was impressed by her rather technical question. “Actually, that wasn’t a question we considered until we decided to install the rellafield here. The field was designed for a multitude of applications – most of which were spacebound. However, to compensate in this case, we added a minute repulsor compensation field to the mix. It effectively repulses the water, causing it to simply cascade over the field instead of coming in contact with it – negating the issue.” Jaina nodded her understanding as they took a passage cutting into the rock to their left and began walking deeper into the rock face.

“What about energy? That would take an enormous amount of power to sustain such a complex field. Where does it all come from?”

Gavin continued down the dark corridor. The rellafield provided the only light in the tunnel – a pale blue hue that was easy on the eyes. “Hydroelectric generators are placed in several of the major falls, including the one we entered. We like to make as little imprint on the land as possible while still taking advantage of the renewable resources around us.”

“Very impressive, Gavin.” She was rewarded as he turned and smiled at her. “Very impressive indeed.” Her aunt Mara would have said something about the value of flattery. If she hadn’t meant every word, she might have thought the same thing - but she really was impressed.

They began to pass several heavily shielded blastdoors on either side of the hall. Before she could ask, Gavin was explaining. “This is a complete hold-out bunker. It’s designed with safety and survival as the utmost goals. Primarily for our family, but could be used for large masses of people if need be. In the event of a worldwide bombardment or barricade, all activities could be directed from this one base of operations, which is completely embedded in these mountains. We’ll be expanding the complex after work on the houses has completed. Eventually, Father would like all this to be available to the Jedi Council as a secret facility, as it is by far the most secure on-planet complex of its type. Eventually, there will be room to shelter hundreds in an emergency situation. Plus, the base is nearly undetectable in all capacities: scanners, heat, even the naked eye.”

Jaina could see the end of the corridor ahead of them. “That wouldn’t stop a determined Sith from tracking the life readings.”

Gavin stopped and turned, considering her words. “Interesting. Perhaps we can look at some way to counteract that as well. Would you be willing to assist us in this research?”

“Possibly.” For a moment, Jaina’s thoughts wandered to that past, and a long defeated enemy. “I would just hate to have that type of technology fall into the wrong hands and be used against us. It is something to think about, though.”

He stroked his goatee in thought before resuming their walk towards what Jaina could now tell was a turbolift. “Good point. Well, the hanger is just ahead, up on another level.” As the lift door opened in front of them, he stood aside and motioned for her to enter first. The door slid shut and the lift began moving quickly upward.

“Your father doesn’t know I’m coming, does he.”

“No. I doubt Cherith would tell him if she had the opportunity. She likes surprises – and keeping us all off balance.” The remark was served with little humor. “He is, however, expecting that mechanic.”

“Well, let’s just keep it that way. For now, I am simply the mechanic coming as requested.”

“If you feel that’s wise.”

“Wise? Perhaps not. But it is fun.” Her smile was warm, hoping it would melt the cold composure before her. “Thank you, Gavin – for the tour and… for talking.”

He turned to regard her with a cool expression reflecting no emotion – then he softened with a small smile. “Of course.” With that, the lift doors opened, revealing an enormous cavern. There was enough lighting to tell the size and scope of the room – a hanger that could easily hold five or six freighters the size of the Falcon in addition to at least two full squadrons of starfighters. Jaina was awed by the shear size of the expansive chamber. Above, a massive opening was centered over the room with an iris of interlocking metal sealing the cavity’s only exit. She saw it all in a heartbeat before quickly focusing on the three small freighters settled on the deck to her right.

One was the Ascendency Star, which had been her ride whenever she traveled with Jag. Another was a modest ship of Corellian design, but one she couldn’t name off the top of her head. Finally, in the center sat a YT-4300 Falcon-class freighter. An updated remodel of the original YT-1300 design, the Falcon-class freighters had been christened over fifteen years ago by the Corellian Engineering Corporation in honor of her father’s classic ship. Jaina had been involved in the design when her father refused. Nothing can beat the Falcon , he’d said. At the site of the now aging ship before her, she couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

“I thought you’d get a kick out of that.” Gavin ventured. “Jak’s father was a designer on the project. And, of course, that’s the one we’re having issues with. You’ll know how to work out the bugs, right?”

“Oh, yes,” she said with a smile. “I think we can handle this. Please, lead the way.” An unmistakable sound of a mechanic at work reached Jaina’s ears. As they began up the boarding ramp, the sound of metal hitting something softer reverberated through the hall, followed by a string of what were likely curses in the native Chiss tongue. Jaina grimaced, trying not to laugh. Gavin took it as a cue.

“Dad? Are you ok?” They reached the access hatch where Jag was working. Tools littered the floor around the pit. Gavin leaned down to look at his father while Jaina stayed out of sight.

The cursing subsided and Jaina could tell Jag looked up at his son. “Yes, Gavin. I’ll be fine,” he said, obviously forced. “Just tell me you have that mechanic I asked for.”

“Yes, she finally got here.”

“Good. Send her down with the hydrospanner.” Jaina could barely see as Jag grabbed another tool and inserted himself back in amongst the equipment. She looked at Gavin with a smile before grabbing the requested tool and jumping down into the pit opposite Jag. She used the Force to slow her decent and landed silently on the deck below. Jag, ever the observant one, stopped his tinkering and slowly turned towards the soft noise behind him. Jaina was happy to see that nothing had changed in their time apart, he was still as handsome as ever, even covered in grease and grime. She couldn’t help but smile at his blank stare as she offered his tool.

“Hydrospanner?”

A/N: Next post - they meet at last. Look for it next Wednesday! love

Love the way you're writing Gavin and Jaina. I think it would be forced and not very realistic if they hit if off the bat immediately. Can't wait to see Jag and Jaina talk next week.

Aha! I was right! They are moving there!

I'm glad that Jaina and Gavin finally talked. I hope that it helped.

"Hydrospanner?" laugh That was great. I can't wait until they talk and, hopefully, make up.

Great post, Jess, and thanks for the PM. hugs

I know! I was heartbroken at first about having to wait another week, but you definitely make up for it with you writing, so it's totally worth it. No worries.

“What do you know of my mother?” He did not hide the contempt and malice in his voice. Not that she could blame him – in her position, she’d probably react the same way.

I really like Jaina's reaction there. It's a subtle way of showing her age and wisdom. She finally realizes she'd do the same thing... and she definitely would too if she were in his position.

I'm glad Gavin and Jaina got to have it out before the went to Jag.

And that was a lot of impressive technology/space those Fels have.

Wonderful description of the Gavin-Jaina encounter! I could picture the whole thing playing out, just like a movie. (From me, that's a compliment...I'm a very "visual" person!)

Kids can be such a pain about protecting their parents sometimes. I do sense Gavin softening up a little, though. That's hopeful!

Great ending! "Hydrospanner?" laugh laugh So much like a H/L exchange. Loved it! And can't wait for Jag's reaction. After all, he's been sneaking around building this lavish estate (and even a hidden base for the Jedi, for Sith's sake!). Jag? You got some explaining to do!

I loved the intensity of Jaina and Gavin's conversation. Great drama. Jaina had a great point: there isn't anyone in the galaxy better qualified to deal with a stubborn Corelian than she is.

Interesting little hideaway the Fel's have built here. Great details on the shield, and I loved the hint of pride in Gavin's voice as he described it to Jaina. I wonder where this is going to lead our heroes? Should I be looking over my shoulder for the Sith?

I have a feeling that Jag's about to get much more than a hydrospanner...

love
