The Jaina/Jag Index Fall Challenge asks:

Jag's bound to drop back into Jaina's life, or perhaps the other way around batting How is it going to happen? What will they say to each other? How long will it take to resolve their feelings of mistrust and remember what they had during the Yuuzhan Vong War?

Corellia Surprise

CHAPTER ONE

Galactic Alliance Third Fleet Base, Coruscant

“Jaina Solo?”

She barely heard the man’s voice over the bustle in the atrium. Keeping her expression blank, she glanced over her shoulder. He wore the dress uniform of a squadron executive officer, but she didn’t recognize him. “I’m afraid you’re mistaken,” she said, shaking her head. “You must have me confused with someone else.”

“I never forget a face.”

She frowned. “This really isn’t a good time.”

“It will only take a moment.”

She turned and began to walk away. “I’m sorry. Maybe some other –”

“I have a message from your old commanding officer.”

“You’ll have to narrow it down.” She quickened her stride through the crowd. “I’ve had quite a few.”

“He sends his regrets on your court-martial.”

Jaina barely suppressed the urge to whirl and slap him. Instead she broke into a brisk trot on a straight line away from him. “Tell your friend he can stick his –”

From behind her the man snatched her hand, slowing her advance. “You’re not the only one who got in their way.”

She spun with the momentum of his restraining grip, but by the time she finished turning he had released her – and vanished.

“What the –”

She scanned the crowd, but he was nowhere to be seen. Then she realized her fingers were closed around something small and metallic. Opening her palm, she saw it was a datacard. Emblazoned with the emblem of the old Rebel Alliance, no less.

“I suppose you expect me to read this?”

Naturally her mysterious visitor gave no reply, although she did receive a few curious glances from nearby beings for her trouble. Idly she pondered throwing the datacard in the nearest trash bin, until her conscience reminded her that such petty spitefulness was beneath a Jedi. She sighed, tucked the datacard in a pouch on her belt, and headed off in search of a datapad and some privacy.

“This better be good.”

Chiss Expansionary Defense Force Headquarters, Csilla

“Jagged Fel?”

He was so accustomed to being addressed by his rank, it took him a moment to realize the woman was actually using his name. He glanced up from the research computer console in the library to see a young blonde flight officer standing across the table. He furrowed his brow. “It depends. Who wants to know?”

She smirked. “I have a message for you.”

He scowled. “Do I know you?”

“It’s from the Grand Admiral.”

He sat back in his chair. “Thrawn?”

She shook her head. “Uh, no. He’s been dead for quite some time.”

“Right,” Jag said. She had expected him to think of someone else first? And what was a human doing here anyway?

“He requires assistance.” She moved around the end of the table to stand right next to him, a little bit too close. “It’s a matter of great importance.”

He shifted in his chair. “I think my father is better suited to –”

“No. Not from the CEDF. From you.” She held his gaze firmly. “Personally.”

“What are you –”

“Read this.” She placed her gloved hand on the smooth surface just next to his. “You’ll understand.”

Jag glanced down and watched her pull her hand away. On the table was a small datacard inscribed with a familiar emblem – the Empire’s. Instinctively he slid his hand and palmed it.

“Who are –” he glanced up “– you?”

She was gone.

He looked quickly around the library, but she was nowhere to be seen. She couldn’t possibly have made it to the doors that fast. It was as if she had vanished into thin air.

“I hate it when that happens.”

Jag took a minute to finish the report he had been reading when she had interrupted him, then stood up from the console. He tucked the datacard in a pocket of his uniform and headed toward the exit. He didn’t really have time for this right now; there were two dozen other reports that needed reading yesterday. On the other hand…

He sighed. Better not take the chance. “Grand Admiral’s orders.”

Grand Royale Hotel, Waypoint Station 268, near Borleias

Jaina paused at the sealed door to the suite. She let her hand fall to her lightsaber hilt on her belt, and stretched out her perceptions in the Force. No danger. No threat. She tapped the wall panel, the door opened, and she strode inside.

In the middle of the small anteroom were two large plush chairs, a low round table, and a matched pair of short tumblers filled with a soft brown liquid. Her host was seated on the right.

“Oh,” she said.

“You were expecting someone else?”

“Actually, yes. I was expecting We– General Antilles. Sir.”

“Ah.” Gilad Pellaeon motioned to the empty seat, then picked up a tumbler. “Join me, Jaina.”

She nodded and sat down. She reached out for the other tumbler, leaned back in her chair, and swirled the sweet Corellian brandy. Before she could ask anything, he spoke.

“Your brother and his fish friend are leading the galaxy toward civil war.”

She raised her brow. Pellaeon’s reputation for bluntness was apparently well deserved. She took a swig. “And you have a plan to stop them?”

“I intend to oppose them as best I can, every step of the way. For now, that means undermining the blockade of Corellia.” He paused, and sipped his drink. “Currently the Empire has a limited presence in Coronet. I intend to deliver additional assets to my agents there. Then they will be in a position to assist the Corellians in undercutting the Galactic Alliance forces.”

“Additional assets?”

He grinned mischievously. “The Empire still has certain capabilities specifically designed to counteract the next generation of the old Rebel technology.”

“Even with Thrackan out of the picture, you’re not about to hand that over to the Corellians.” She chuckled. “I wouldn’t, either. So you need to insert your personnel with it, too.”

He lifted his glass approvingly.

She tipped her head. “All right. But what does any of this have to do with me?”

“I’ve had my operatives analyzing the blockade for some time. It has only gotten tighter these last few days. Running it will not be easy. In fact, it will be close to impossible.” He took another sip, savored it. “I have plenty of great pilots. What I need is a Jedi.”

“Specifically, a Jedi you can trust not to run straight to Luke Skywalker – or the GAG.”

“That, too.”

“Good call.” She took a slow, deep breath and lowered her tumbler into two hands in her lap. “All right. I’m listening.”

For nearly an hour he explained the full operational details of the mission, including the assigned tasks of his agents once they were in place. Her primary role would be as a pilot, flying the most important ship in a small flotilla of smuggler ships running arms and mercenaries to the Corellian resistance. But her job wasn’t just running the blockade; that would be too easy. Secrecy was essential to the mission’s success, so the Corellians wouldn’t know they were coming, which meant evading CorSec through the crowded air corridors of Coronet to the rendezvous point might come into the picture, too. If she made it to the rendezvous point, she would make the delivery and pick up several Imperial agents for extraction. Then they would have to find a way out.

When he finished he took the last sip of his brandy; she hadn’t touched hers. With some effort, he stood. “I’ll give you time to think about it.”

“No.”

“I’m sorry?”

Looking up, she held his gaze. “No, I don’t need time to think about it.” She flung her head back and drained the entire rest of her brandy in one long swig, then smacked the empty tumbler down on the table. “I’ll do it.”

Imperial Star Destroyer Chimaera, near Bilbringi

Heading across the warship’s main bridge, Jag fought to keep his bemusement from his face. The young ensign who had led him here from the hangar bay clearly had no idea who he was. Not a clue in the galaxy, in fact. After the last couple of years spent nearly exclusively in Chiss space, he almost wanted to grin. It was… refreshing.

“Here you are, sir,” the ensign said with a false air of confidence, indicating the closed door to the commanding officer’s office.

“Thank you,” Jag replied, and saluted the young man to dismiss him.

He paused for a moment to collect himself, then tapped the wall panel and entered, fully expecting to see his father’s old friend sitting behind the desk. Instead the chair was empty.

“Thank you for coming on such short notice, Jag,” said the Grand Admiral’s voice from the side of the wide room.

Glancing over, Jag realized it was from the small, but no doubt well-stocked, bar. “Of course, sir.”

“Brandy? It’s Corellian.”

“Yes, thank you.”

Pellaeon finished pouring two short tumblers, then walked to the large round table on the same side of the room. The mahogany surface was covered with tactical maps and datapads. Jag took the cue, and followed. He accepted the offered tumbler, and they sat down.

“You remember our discussion several months ago at Yaga Minor, I trust?”

“Very well.” Jag took a swig. Apparently the recently resigned Supreme Commander of the Galactic Alliance military hadn’t wasted any time in shifting back into partisan Imperial mode. Not that he had ever really switched out of it.

“An opportunity has arisen to move up the timetable.”

“Oh?”

“The Empire – I should say the Remnant, in the eyes of the parties to the current crisis – is in a position to build a great deal of goodwill with the Corellians and other factions opposed to the GA’s current course of action.” He paused, raising a brow. “You’re surprised?”

“No,” Jag replied, shaking his head. “But for a moment there I thought you were going to tell me that the Remnant was going to secede from the GA and enter the conflict on the Corellian side.”

“Ah.” Pellaeon chuckled and took a drink. “No, no. We’re quite a long way from anything like that.” He sipped again. “At least, I certainly hope so.”

“As do I.” Jag took another sip, too. “So, this opportunity?”

Briefly Pellaeon explained his plan to assist the Corellians in undermining the GA blockade by adding a small force intelligence operatives and their Imperial technology to the mix, and the operation he had devised to get them onplanet.

“It sounds like you have everything arranged,” Jag said when he finished, “and you wouldn’t have called me all the way here just to keep me informed.”

Pellaeon gave a small shrug in concession. “When I made arrangements with the pilots for the smuggler ships, I may have… neglected to mention the likelihood that a rescue, rather an escape flight, would be necessary. Which means I need an equally good pilot ready and waiting with a ship to extract them.”

“And?”

“And what?”

“And you don’t summon a senior officer – whose presence would be awfully difficult to explain were he to be captured – away from his important command duties to fly a single-ship extraction operation in a war zone.” Jag drank the rest of his brandy in a single gulp. “Especially when the last time he flew a mission, he was shot down by an amateur gunner in a civilian craft.”

“The Millennium Falcon shot down Darth Vader without a Jedi Knight on the cannons, Jagged,” Pellaeon said. “You’re good, but you’re not that good.”

“Not yet.”

Pellaeon lifted his tumbler. “In any event, you’re right. There is more.” He sighed dramatically. “I never could get anything past your father, either.”

“That’s why we’re so valuable.”

“True.” Pellaeon finished his brandy as well. “The Corellian resistance is only worth so much to us. The real value of this mission is reestablishing contact with an old ally. The current crisis is the perfect situation for laying the groundwork for a much… closer relationship.”

“Let me guess,” Jag said, wishing he had more brandy, “you’re not going to tell me who it is.”

“No,” Pellaeon replied with a sly grin. “You’ll find out when you get there.”

Jag shrugged. “It doesn’t matter. I’ll still do it.”

“Of course you will.” Pellaeon patted him on the back. “That’s why you’re so valuable.”

If you’re wondering about the backstory with Jag and Pellaeon, stay tuned… whistling

Chapter Two will be up in a day or so. grin

I loved that line.

CHAPTER TWO

Mission Staging Area, just outside Selonian system

Jaina finished the final systems checks on the heavily customized staryacht. She wasn’t pleased with its lack of weapon systems, but the enhanced shields and upgraded sensor array probably would be more handy on this mission. And she certainly wasn’t going to complain about the highly illegal modifications to the sublight and atmospheric drives or the maneuvering thrusters to boost output and efficacy well beyond retail operational parameters.

Perhaps she could find a way to get them to let her keep it. After all, she could always add weapons later.

She rose from the pilot’s seat, headed down the narrow interior corridor, and bounded down the boarding ramp. Pellaeon’s agents and their mysterious sealed crates were waiting for her.

“Go ahead and get loaded,” she told their commander, thumbing over her shoulder. “This bird’ll do the job just fine.”

The man nodded crisply, but she could practically taste his Imperial disdain for smugglers and other underworld types. He and his men were already hustling onboard before Jaina was even three strides away.

She went straight for the light freighter that was going to be her armed cover and, if necessary, her decoy. The human pilot and Wookiee copilot were finishing a few last repairs on the exterior dorsal hull of their battered ship.

“You sure that thing is going to hold up?” she demanded.

“It’ll get the job done for you, gorgeous,” the man replied in a thick Corellian accent. “You just do your thing, and don’t worry about us.”

She chuckled. “You sound like you think you’ve got the next Millennium Falcon or something.”

“We do,” he shot back, full of bravado. “Solo and Chewbacca only wish they coulda had a ship as great as ours during the Rebellion.”

This time Jaina laughed. “In your dreams, pal.”

The Wookiee snickered under his breath; apparently fabulous ships weren’t the only thing his friend could only dream about.

“Look here, lady, I don’t know who you think you are, but –”

“You don’t have any idea, do you?”

The man blinked. The Wookiee barely stopped chuckling long enough to taunt him for ruining yet another chance with a beautiful woman in less than two minutes.

“It’s okay,” Jaina said, looking up to meet the Wookiee’s gaze. “He never had a shot with me anyway. Arrogant braggarts aren’t my type.” With that, she spun on her heel and marched away.

“Hey!” the man called after her. “How did you –”

She lost the rest to the sound of the Wookiee’s braying laughter, and her own.

Westside Spaceport 23, Coronet

Jag moved nonchalantly within the motley crowd disembarking the transport. It had been remarkably easy to hop a series of civilian passenger liner flights into the Core, and even into the Corellian sector. After arriving at Talus, he had bribed his way onto one of the few transports that would be allowed through the blockade. Now, finally, he was here.

Corellia.

His father had been born here, had grown up on a farm here. His mother’s roots were here, too. Yet in his entire life Jag had never been to this planet. Between the reign of the Diktat, and the first Corellian Crisis, and the Yuuzhan Vong war, he had been well into his twenties by the time a visit even would have been possible. By the time he’d finally had the chance to think about making the trip, he’d decided to mend his broken heart back in Chiss space, far from the galactic Core and any proximity to –

“Your papers?”

Abruptly back in reality, Jag looked up at the customs inspector. He offered a chagrined tip of the head and handed over his forged identity records, which had been meticulously and masterfully faked by Pellaeon’s special ops division.

“Right. Sorry.”

The inspector reviewed them thoroughly. Several times he peered intently at Jag’s face.

“That’s from when I had a beard,” Jag added helpfully, pointing at the image on his passport. For good measure he rubbed a hand over his clean-shaven jaw. “Still getting used to it this way.”

“Hmph.” The inspector gave an extra glower, then handed back the datacard. “Enjoy your stay.”

“I will, thank you,” Jag replied. If you only knew.

He strode out of the inspection station and onto the wide thoroughfare. Countless airtaxis zoomed overhead; numerous others waited in long lines to offer transportation to the arriving passengers. Those who didn’t hail one headed for the mag-lev train tunnels. Only a few began to walk into the city.

Jag followed them.

Inhaling deeply, he imagined he could sense something distinctive in the air of this place. The spirit and resolve that had made the planet great for millennia. The vibrant determination that had produced so many galactic heroes. The –

He coughed. Hard.

“Used to the crisp, clean arctic air, eh, my friend?”

Jag turned, his hand poised to reach for the blaster pistol concealed in a shoulder holster beneath his jacket. Next to him stood a tall man in a long, dark coat, his face concealed by the wide brim of his dark hat.

“My apologies,” the man said. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I only came to tell you that the tower has sixteen floors.”

“And I came to tell you that a wise man does not attend the council without his bracelet.” Jag scowled enthusiastically. “While we’re on that subject – a wise man also wouldn’t sneak up on me like that again. Unless he plans to get himself shot.”

“Point taken.” The man held out his hands apologetically, then grinned. “On behalf of Imperial Intelligence, welcome to Corellia, Admiral Fel.”

Galactic Alliance blockade, above Corellia

She sighed. Once she’d had the thought, it was already too late. She might as well just say it.

“This is too easy.”

Jaina checked the sensors again. Nothing. So far their approach to the system had gone entirely unnoticed by the GA fleet – until a few days ago, her fleet.

She checked again. Still nothing. Only forty-five more seconds…

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

“Rodder!”

“Unidentified vessel,” barked a male voice over the comm., “cease your course immediately and come about to –”

Jaina stopped listening, and jammed the sublight drive to maximum. Even at ninety-five percent the inertial compensator couldn’t keep up, and she slammed back in the pilot’s chair as the ship lurched forward. She swung the yacht from its trajectory and plunged into a steep dive.

“– immediately! Repeat, unidentified –”

She spared a glance to the tactical display. The other ships in the smuggler flotilla had broken off into their prearranged evasion patterns. The Falcon pretender stayed close to her, ready to swoop in with cannons blazing if necessary – but Jaina had no intention of letting it become necessary.

The GA fleet, of course, was already scrambling fighters in their direction.

“A-wings,” she muttered. “It had to be A-wings.”

Adjusting course again, she bought herself a few more seconds. The GA fighters were closing fast, though. Too fast.

“Show me what you’ve got, boys,” she said under her breath, and spun the staryacht into a viciously sharp turn.

The freighter did a commendable job of hanging with her. The pair of starships blazed toward the invisible line demarcating the deadly boundary between the Corellian and GA forces. Not that they would be completely free and clear once they crossed it, but Jaina wasn’t worried about escaping the Corellians. The intelligence reports said their technology and training simply weren’t up to the level of the GA fleet’s. She had enough firsthand observations to know that this time the intelligence reports were right.

Another alarm blared on her console. She glanced down, and realized the Corellians had scrambled fighters to investigate the high-speed pursuit headed toward their planet.

“Oh, perfect.”

The A-wings opened fire, presumably attempting to disable their prey before it could cross into the Corellian zone, but she was just beyond their cannon range. To be safe, she yanked the staryacht to port, then starboard. The maneuver cost her a few seconds of progress, but it would give the GA pilots reason to think she was concerned. It also was the signal for the freighter to break free and starting playing decoy.

More alarms screeched, and the tactical display was getting awfully crowded.

Then, finally, the clear tone sounded. She was across the line.

Imperial Intelligence safehouse, Coronet

The surveillance feeds were a cacophony of anger and confusion.

“Unidentified vessel, come to full stop immediately or we will –”

“Galactic Alliance fighters, reverse course or your intrusion will be considered an act of –”

“Corellian fighters, stand down. Interference with lawful pursuit of a fugitive vessel is –”

“– Squadron, prepare to open fire on –”

“– defend yourselves against any aggression by –”

Jag certainly hoped the Grand Admiral knew what he was doing. If things continued at this rate, their simple covert operation was going to end up provoking an all-out shooting war between the Galactic Alliance and Corellia. Even if no one realized it was the Empire’s mission gone awry, the war would still be on his conscience. And he had enough there as it was.

He leaned down to the communications tech seated in front of him. “Are we picking up any transmissions from our ships?”

“None, sir,” the man said. At his sides, the other two techs shook their heads.

Jag scowled. This was not good.

Taking a deep breath, he looked up to the theater assessment board above the communications stations. Even with all his command experience, the frantic dash toward the planet was nearly incomprehensible. At least nobody was shooting at each other. For now.

“CorSec is mobilizing pursuit fighters, sir.”

“How close is the primary ship to atmospheric entry?”

“Already begun, sir.”

Jag exhaled sharply. “At least something broke our way.” He spun on his heel and headed toward the door. “Send the signal for the secondary contingency plan.”

“Sir?”

“You heard me, Lieutenant. I’m going to get them.”

Southside commercial skylanes, Coronet

Nowhere else could ever come close to truly rivaling the maze of towering skyscrapers that was Coruscant, but Coronet’s soaring buildings and overcrowded skylanes made a pretty good approximation. Certainly good enough for Jaina’s purposes.

When she’d finished her atmospheric descent, a full squadron of CorSec fighters had begun the pursuit through the cityscape. Now she had only three on her tail; the best the other nine could do was try to guess the angles and cut her off. So far they’d had no luck.

It wasn’t much credit to CorSec’s reputation for always catching their quarry. Then again, they hadn’t built that reputation by chasing Jedi.

Hurtling through an impossible turn, sailing heedlessly between cross-traffic, Jaina started to understand why Pellaeon had said this mission couldn’t succeed without her.

Her tactical display was useless in the city. All she knew was that the Imps had told her to follow the secondary contingency plan. They would only have done that if the Corellians were creating considerably more trouble than anticipated.

Looping around a lumbering cargo hauler, she hissed a short breath. She couldn’t exactly disagree with their call on this one.

She wasn’t even watching the traffic outside her cockpit viewport. Her peripheral vision and her Force senses took care of guiding her through that. All she focused on was the heads-up display, and in particular its flashing beacon indicating the new rendezvous point.

Of course, the secondary contingency plan only told her where to go. It didn’t actually tell her how she was going to make the drop-off when she got there – or how she was going to get away once she did. The Imp commander had to figure that out on the fly, based on how bad things had really gotten. The details would be forthcoming.

Any second now.

“Come on…” she growled.

On cue, the encrypted Imperial transmitter crackled. “Payload One, acknowledge.”

Stunned, she found her voice wouldn’t work. No! It’s impossible!

“Payload One, acknowledge,” he repeated.

“Payload One here,” she croaked, “I copy.”

“Jaina?”

“Jag?”

Wow nice story you've got there Lex grin

And good job Grand Admiral mischief From all people his choice was Jaina and Jag. What a weird coincidence mischief I think someone is looking for his successors cool

Loved that whole exchange. Quite an homage to the movies and her father, yet very Jaina. Or is that because she's so like her father and mother? thinking

I thought you did a clever job of fitting in most of your challenge words for the spook code between Jag and his contact. Well played wink

And the ending - priceless! love
