CHAPTER THREE

Cockpit, Imperial Intelligence airspeeder

“What the hell –”

“What the hell –”

“– are you doing here?”

“– are you doing here?”

Silence.

“I asked first,” he said.

Jag swerved around a bulk freighter, then looped past a pair of large cargo haulers. The commercial skylanes were crowded for this time of day.

“Running the GA blockade and evading CorSec,” she replied, her voice low and short, “but I imagine you already figured that part out for yourself. Actually I’m surprised he didn’t tell you I was coming.”

“He?”

“Pellaeon. He’s the mastermind behind this whole thing, right?”

“Yes, but he –”

“Your turn.”

“My – ?”

“You’re a long way from Chiss space, Jag.”

“That fact had occurred to me, yes.”

“The CEDF suddenly has an interest in the GA’s little family squabble in the Core?”

“Not particularly.”

“You didn’t quit the CEDF, did you?”

“No.”

“Yeah, didn’t expect that from Mister Persistent.” A grunt. “So since when do the Chiss take your marching orders from the Remnant?”

“We don’t, exactly.”

“Huh?”

“It’s… complicated, Jaina.”

“Apparently.” She grunted again. “Hey, I have a thought.”

“Always a dangerous proposition.”

“How about you tell me all the fascinating details once your Imp buddies have this fabulous secret delivery I’m carrying for them?”

“Of course you’re right,” he said, grimacing. “Give me a moment.”

He glanced at the tactical data scrolling by rapidly on the speeder’s heads-up display. Fortunately the Intelligence techs were transmitting exactly the information he needed.

She clucked. “I’m disappointed. I’d have thought you had it all figured out already.”

“I did – until I realized it was you.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“You’re a far better pilot than I’d planned for.” He checked the tactical data again, and changed course. “You’re also a Jedi. That gives us more options.”

“Us?”

“I want to be sure the payload arrives in Imperial hands in one piece. And, wild guess here, you’d prefer to avoid getting arrested by CorSec in the process.”

“That would be a nice touch.”

“Then our objectives are aligned.” He swung the speeder around a sharp corner. “Listen closely. Here’s what we’re going to do.”

Cockpit, Imperial staryacht

She listened. Had he lost his mind?

“You want me to open the bay doors?”

“Yes.”

She checked her course toward the new rendezvous point he had designated. “And they’re just going to shove everything out the back?”

“Yes.”

“Um, won’t that, you know, smash everything to bits?”

“No. The crates have repulsorsleds.”

“Okay, but what about your agents?”

“They’ll be fine,” he said, sounding a little annoyed. “One of the crates has repulsor backpacks. They cracked it open as soon as I signaled the secondary contingency plan.”

She laughed. “You Imps plan ahead for everything, don’t you?”

“No, not everything,” he said, so softly she barely heard him.

“What’s that?”

“Nothing. Look, how close are you?”

She glanced at the display, then swung a tight arc around the next turn in the skylanes. “Thirty seconds, tops.”

“Good.”

“So,” she said, tapping in the code to override the bay door in-flight locks, “you’re sure your people will get this stuff before CorSec does?”

“Positive.”

“All right.” She frowned, and hit the button to open the bay doors. “Your funeral.”

She flipped her helmet comlink from his feed to the agents in the cargo hold, and received an immediate good-to-go. “Ten second countdown on my mark. Ready…”

Jaina held course, weaving around a large hauler, zipping past a small passenger liner. Only then did she see that the drop point was actually right over a narrow gap in the dense conglomeration of warehouses and factories around her – where the payload could plummet hundreds of stories to the bare ground below.

“I hope you know what you’re doing, Jag,” she muttered under her breath.

“Mark!”

Whump! The staryacht wobbled under the force of its cargo lurching out the open bay doors. Ker-thump! Ka-whomp!

Then it was over, and the staryacht flew steady again.

She flipped back to Jag’s feed. “Done.”

“Perfect timing.”

“You doubted me?”

“Not for a second.”

Cockpit, Imperial Intelligence airspeeder

Jag checked for the CorSec pursuit fighters on the tactical display. Three were still on the Jaina’s tail. Four others were in range, heading for possible intercept points ahead.

“Rock One secure,” came a male voice from the comm unit.

“Rock Two secure.”

Jag checked the display again. The CorSec fighters had gained a lot ground when the staryacht had been slowed by the ungainly cargo dump. They were close now. Too close.

“Rock Three secure.”

“Um, Jag?” Her voice interrupted his focus. “We still have two problems.”

He blinked. “Two?”

“The staryacht – and me.”

“Rock Team clear, Admiral,” the male tech reported. “Mission accomplished.”

“Not yet,” Jag said.

“Not yet what?” Jaina demanded.

“Sorry,” he replied. “That was for Intel.”

“Copy.” She sounded tense. “But you still haven’t told me what we’re doing with this ship.”

He checked the tactical display, toggling it to a nearby sector of the commercial district. “Redirect to mark oh-six-nine.”

“What then?”

He gritted his teeth. “Always with the questions.”

“Sorry.” She paused. “Not really.”

“Didn’t think so.” He glanced to the display. The CorSec fighters were still gaining ground. Jaina was a better pilot, and had a better ship. But her pursuers knew the district better, and were outracing her through its twists and turns.

On cue she said, “Speed it up, Fel. This is getting a little close for my taste.”

“Console to your left, blue panel.”

“Copy.”

“Smash it with your fist.”

“What?”

“Smash it with your fist.”

“No, I meant –”

“Do it, Jaina!”

The crunch was audible over the comm. “Done.”

He nodded to himself. “The red button beneath it.”

“Yeah, I see it.”

“That’s the self-destruct. Five-second delay.”

A long silence. He knew she was pondering whether she was more distressed for the ship or her own safety. Her choice didn’t surprise him. “You’re just gonna blow this girl up?”

“Better that than let CorSec get their hands on her.”

“But –”

“If the Empire has anything, Jaina, it’s money. Don’t worry about it.”

A disapproving growl came over the feed. Then she said, “And what about me?”

“You’re going to eject.”

“The pilot’s seat has a repulsorpack too?”

“No.”

“Oh.” She sounded just a tad bit concerned. “So what’s the plan?”

“Eject. Once you’re clear, remove the harness.” He spared a quick moment for the tactical display. Fifteen seconds away. Barely enough time to beat CorSec to the punch. “When you see my speeder, jump.”

“You’re retrieving me personally? Such a gentleman!”

“Can you do it?”

“Of course. Jedi, remember?”

“All right, then.” When he flipped the switch to open the canopy of the airspeeder he realized he’d been gripping the yoke so tight his knuckles had gone white. “On my mark.”

“Copy.” She didn’t sound worried any more.

“Three… two… one…”

Ahead he saw the staryacht racing toward him. Beyond, but not by much, was the trio of CorSec pursuit fighters. She was right. They were cutting it awfully close.

“Mark!”

The cockpit viewport of the staryacht blasted away, and the small blur that was the ejection seat shot clear of the ship. He swung the yoke, racing toward it, never taking his eyes off the target. She grew larger by the second, until he was almost to her.

Bah-whoooooom!

The force of the exploding staryacht rocked the airspeeder, but a twist of his wrists compensated effortlessly. The next instant Jaina sprang free of the ejection seat, plunging into a headfirst dive, rolling over her center –

Whump! She landed cleanly in the empty seat next to him. She wore a plain gray flightsuit, and big white helmet that was far too big for her petite frame.

Their eyes met. Silence.

“Hey,” she said finally said.

“Hey.”

Tomorrow… The conclusion. love

When I clicked on this one I thought the title seemed familiar. tongue

Jaina's situation is really believable here. Of course she'd accept. It's the chance to fly and she has nothing else to do.

I liked the little touch of the Rebel and Imperial insignias. And I always enjoy your homages to the movies.

Very creative with all the key words you had to fit in.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
And of course... priceless sound effects.

Nice ending to that last post too. It's like time standing still... but it can't... 'cause they're sort of being chased.

Jaina barely suppressed the urge to whirl and slap him. Instead she broke into a brisk trot on a straight line away from him. “Tell your friend he can stick his –”

shock

laugh

From behind her the man snatched her hand, slowing her advance. “You’re not the only one who got in their way.”
She spun with the momentum of his restraining grip, but by the time she finished turning he had released her – and vanished.
“What the –”
She scanned the crowd, but he was nowhere to be seen. Then she realized her fingers were closed around something small and metallic. Opening her palm, she saw it was a datacard. Emblazoned with the emblem of the old Rebel Alliance, no less.

Very strange thinking

He looked quickly around the library, but she was nowhere to be seen. She couldn’t possibly have made it to the doors that fast. It was as if she had vanished into thin air.

Lumiya, maybe? confused

He sighed. Better not take the chance. “Grand Admiral’s orders.”

I'm liking this because I have no idea what's going on thinking

“Your brother and his fish friend are leading the galaxy toward civil war.”

Pellaeon's a racist! tongue

For nearly an hour he explained the full operational details of the mission, including the assigned tasks of his agents once they were in place. Her primary role would be as a pilot, flying the most important ship in a small flotilla of smuggler ships running arms and mercenaries to the Corellian resistance. But her job wasn’t just running the blockade; that would be too easy. Secrecy was essential to the mission’s success, so the Corellians wouldn’t know they were coming, which meant evading CorSec through the crowded air corridors of Coronet to the rendezvous point might come into the picture, too. If she made it to the rendezvous point, she would make the delivery and pick up several Imperial agents for extraction. Then they would have to find a way out.

I like it! grin

Pellaeon gave a small shrug in concession. “When I made arrangements with the pilots for the smuggler ships, I may have… neglected to mention the likelihood that a rescue, rather an escape flight, would be necessary. Which means I need an equally good pilot ready and waiting with a ship to extract them.”

mischief

“Let me guess,” Jag said, wishing he had more brandy, “you’re not going to tell me who it is.”
“No,” Pellaeon replied with a sly grin. “You’ll find out when you get there.”

I'm starting to think Pellaeon spent too much time with Thrawn raised_brow Very interesting plan of his, and I liked the way he set it up.

Great post grin I'll review the other two soon happy

Whoops. Accidentally snagged the first reply to the third post earlier. silly

As for the third post....
Ahhh, the return of J/J banter.

It must of really pained Jaina to blow up that ship. Oh well. Jag said the Empire has money, perhaps they can reward her for her services with a new one.

And her perfect landing into the speeder's passanger seat... it's as if they expect no less. That's part of what makes it so entertaining though. They are doing amazing things while bantering.

Ok. Let's see if I can not accidentally snag the first reply again.

CHAPTER FOUR

Landing Platform One, Imperial Intelligence safehouse

Jag set the airspeeder down smoothly on the permacrete landing platform. He slid over the side, then glanced toward Jaina. She was already out, too.

Even though the flight back had taken nearly ten minutes, they hadn’t said a word since their awkward greetings. He hadn’t known where to start. Obviously she hadn’t either. They met in front of the speeder.

“I need to deal with some –”

She waved off his explanation. “It’s none of my business.”

“Thank you.”

She hesitated, looking at her boots. Then she said, “I should go.”

“Jaina…”

“My parents are here. On Corellia. I can feel them.” She looked up, an unfocused gaze into the distance. “My mother is… worried. I should make sure they’re okay, or maybe I can even help them.” She met his eyes. “They’ll get me offplanet. You don’t have to worry about it.”

“Can it wait?”

“What?” She had already been turning to leave. She turned back. “Why?”

“Well, I…” He paused, and sighed.

She canted her head.

He didn’t know what else to do, so he just said it. “We have a lot to talk about.”

After an eternal heartbeat, she tipped her head. “Perhaps we do.”

“Admiral Fel, sir?”

He glanced over his shoulder to see an Intelligence agent hurrying out onto the landing platform. He held up a palm to ward the man off, then he turned back to Jaina. “So?”

She nodded. “I’ll wait. Just find someplace where I’ll be out of the way.”

“I’ll figure something out,” he said, heading toward the open doorway to the safehouse.

Matching his stride, she looked up at him. “They made you an admiral, huh?”

“Yes.” He looked down, and she was smiling, just a little. “Everyone makes mistakes.”

Interrogation chamber, Imperial Intelligence safehouse

Jaina stared at the room’s blank gray walls. He had apologized profusely for the austere surroundings – a small table shoved over against the side wall and two metal chairs – but it was the only room in the safehouse not actively being used by Imperial Intelligence at the moment. She had assured him she didn’t mind.

It was the truth. The plain room was rather comforting. Most importantly, it had no Holonet screen to display more disturbing news of the crisis.

Leaning back in her chair, bracing it and her shoulders against the wall, she closed her eyes. She did not reach into the Force. Meditating would pass the time more quickly, but meditation didn’t bring her peace any more. Not when she still had a hollow ache in her soul where her bond with Jacen should have been. Not when that emptiness sometimes was more than a void, more like a cold stone of darkness draining away the warmth within her.

Since the worst days of the Yuuzhan Vong war, she always had thought that the experience of Anakin’s death and Jacen’s absence would be the worst feeling she would ever know. Now she knew differently. Some kinds of loss were worse than death.

The door slid open.

Jag paused just inside. “If you want to go somewhere else…”

She shook her head. “This is fine, actually.”

“All right.” He strode into the room, hesitated for a moment, and then grabbed the other chair and slid it over next to hers. He sat down and leaned back, matching her pose.

For a long minute they sat, side-by-side, in silence.

Finally Jag said, “Tell me what really happened.”

She looked at him, unsure which of many things he was referring to.

“The court-martial. What happened?”

“You know about that?”

He wouldn’t look at her. “Word gets around.”

She didn’t press. His discomfort spoke for itself. She couldn’t help but wonder, though. Had it been the morbid curiosity of watching the woman who’d broken his heart destroy her life? Or did he still care? She stopped herself; she couldn’t go there now.

Jaina took a deep breath, and gave him the same explanation she’d told Uncle Luke back at Third Fleet Base just a few days ago. The real, full story the tribunal had never heard. She wasn’t sure what she’d expected Jag’s reaction to be, but it wasn’t what he said.

“You did the right thing.”

“I disobeyed a direct order.” She sighed. “A direct, lawful order.”

He shook his head. “His action was justified. His motive wasn’t.”

“That’s not a defense, though. Not to the tribunal.”

“No, I suppose not.” His green eyes were compassionate. “I couldn’t figure out why you didn’t defend yourself. It didn’t seem like you at all.”

“It’s not, usually. But I… couldn’t.”

“I know.” He shifted awkwardly in the chair. Then he ran his fingers through his short hair once, quickly. “So what are you going to do now?”

“I don’t know yet,” she admitted quietly.

He waited.

“Even if the GA hadn’t suspended me, I couldn’t serve it anymore. Omas, Niathal, they’re out of their minds escalating the crisis this way, this fast.” She closed her eyes just for a moment. “And what Jacen’s doing with the Guard…”

“What about the Jedi? Your uncle and aunt must –”

“They’re part of the problem,” she said, shaking her head. “They can’t – won’t – accept the reality that’s in front of them.”

“Surely they have to know these tactics are wrong?”

“Funny,” she said ruefully, “that’s the same thing my father’s been saying.”

He flinched. She almost didn’t see it, but it was there, and it was real. “You’re thinking about staying here? Joining the Corellian side with your parents?”

She shrugged. “Maybe.”

“At least Thrackan is out the picture.”

“Yeah.”

After a second he said, “What about Pellaeon?”

She furrowed her brow. “You think he’s recruiting me?”

“He’s already done it once.”

“I’m a Rebel, Jag.” She inhaled, pondering the truth of that statement. “And I’m a Jedi. Not exactly the prototype for a good Imp.”

“We’re not the old Empire, Jaina.”

“Yeah.” Oddly she found herself not reflexively dismissing the idea out of hand. It was… disconcerting. “I guess that’s the whole Chiss and Pellaeon thing we didn’t get to talk about yet.”

“Yes.” There was caution in his voice.

“Never mind. I’m sure it’s a bunch of high-level Imperial state secrets that aren’t any of my business, either.”

He paused. “I can tell you.”

She looked over. “You don’t have to.”

“I will,” he said. “Just not right now. It’s a long story for another time.” His eyes darted around. “And… not here.”

“Okay.”

Even without searching for it, she could feel a profound sadness and distress radiating off him in the Force. It had been lingering since he’d arrived, but it was only growing stronger as the minutes passed. The sensation was so strong, she was starting to feel anxious just from sitting next to him.

“Something’s bothering you. And it’s not all this clandestine Imperial allegiance stuff,” she added before he could object.

“It’s nothing.”

“I don’t believe you.”

At first he didn’t reply. Then he sighed deeply. “I didn’t do the right thing like you did.”

“When? What do you mean?”

“I was angry. Bitter.” He glanced over at her, uncertain. “Jealous. I let it cloud my judgment. I should have warned you.”

“Warned me?” Her heart was racing. “About what?”

“Your brother –” conspicuously he still hadn’t said Jacen’s name “– is dangerous.”

“I know.”

“No. This is different. I knew it back then.” He looked into her eyes, a pained expression on his face. “He was the one who betrayed your parents’ mission at Tenupe to the Chiss.”

She nodded sadly. “Lately I’ve wondered…”

“He contacted me personally. He insisted I guarantee they not be harmed, but he provided all the mission details.” Jag paused, glancing off across the room. “I don’t know why. I can only assume it was because helping the Chiss against the Killiks served his own purposes in some way.”

“You’re right about that. They were his purposes. Not the Jedi’s. Not mine.”

He looked back to her. “Even during the Killik war?”

“Yes.” She sighed. She had apologies to make, too. “Supply Depot Thrago was his mission. He deceived us, told us it was an active military target. By the time we realized it wasn’t true, he’d already started the shooting. There was nothing I could do to stop him.”

“That explains a lot. He was flying the Stealth-X that caused all the damage.”

“Yes.” She touched his arm, just momentarily. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. You’re not responsible for his choices.”

“Any more than you’re responsible for mine after you secured Lowie’s release.”

He nodded.

“I wouldn’t blame you not forgiving me for that,” she said softly. “Or for being on the wrong side of that war.”

“You did what you thought was right.”

“You said I had no honor.”

“I only said that to hurt you.”

“To hurt me back.”

“Yes. I thought I was angry at you for being on the other side of the war. I told myself I was disappointed you and – that you were a Joiner.” He swallowed. “Really, I was still hurting from when you’d left me.”

Still. She caught the word. “So you’re over me now?”

He looked away. “I didn’t say that.”

“Good.”

That got him to look at her, brow raised. “Good?”

She grinned, just a little. “I never got over you, either.”

Abruptly he leaned forward, lowering the chair to the bare floor, and stood. She leaned forward too, but didn’t stand up just yet. Maybe she’d said too much, cut it too close…

“You’re leaving?” she asked.

“I need to have a talk with a sneaky old man.”

“What will you say to him?”

“Say?” Jag glanced down, fire in his eyes. “Nothing. He set me up. Set us up. And I’m going sock him one for it.”

“You’ll get court-martialed.”

“Probably.” He chuckled, already walking toward the door. “I’ll be in good company.”

“Where do you think you’re going?”

Jag stopped, looking back over his shoulder. “Like I said, to –”

Jaina was already out of her chair. “Not without me, you’re not.”

THE END rose

Matching his stride, she looked up at him. “They made you an admiral, huh?”

“Yes.” He looked down, and she was smiling, just a little. “Everyone makes mistakes.”

Ha. I can see his total deadpan delivery of this. laugh

“We’re not the old Empire, Jaina.”
For some reason I can see an ad coming out of this. "Join us. We're not your grandfather's Empire."
I also like it because it hints to some already-canon-hinted possibility for the future. cool

I liked this ending. Yay they can be civil! ... And then go beat someone up together. wink
Well, at least they're not mad at each other. grin

Nice job, Lex!

I love the way you ended it. grin Now we can look forward to a sequel. praying

The interaction between Jag and Jaina was wonderful. Hopefully they'll get Jag back in the novels too and they won't make a mess out of his return either.

Once again, congratulations. applause
